Miko and Holding a Grudge: Storytime is Learning Time
I was thinking about how in the final episode of TFP, Miko uses the "I'm going to beat your ass" armour to punch Knockout clean across the face
Tumblr media
Miko punches him so quickly and efficiently that I genuinely could not get a screenshot of the impact moment. lmao
And there are a lot of good reasons for her to want to slap this twink into the stratosphere, but I was thinking about any specific grudges Miko might have personally against Knockout to help fuel that punch
Because typically Miko goes in with a sort of "I learned this by watching WWE with Bulkhead and I'm excited to hurt you" tiny human wrecker energy and is naturally hyped, so she tends to go in with a slightly showy approach to delivering a beatdown, which makes sense.
We know she watches stuff like monster truck rallies with Bulkhead, and we know she's watched Bulkhead and Wheeljack pretty closely, and this has had an impact on her developing her personal fighting style: High energy, maybe a couple attempts at some kind of signature moves. she's learned from TV shows and watching actual factional alien warfare play out in the Nevada desert. Shit's wild, and so is she.
But when she punches Knockout, it's a totally silent, quick, efficient hit-- which is pretty different to how Miko usually approaches "the smackdown".
Sure, part of it is because Knockout is sort of ruining a huge moment for the Autobots by quipping at a particularly annoying moment to do so, and she probably just wants him to shut the fuck up as quickly as possible so they can all get back to enjoying watching the revitalisation of Cybertron.
And they're all probably a bit tired from even managing to get to this point.
But then I remembered:
In the episode Flying Mind, Miko and Raf help Fowler off the Nemesis after he's been incapacitated.
But Jack stays behind, and when Knockout snaps out of Trypticon's stasis, he attempts to power drill through Jack's head/upper torso.
Tumblr media
Ratchet comes through the ground bridge and punches Knockout, in the same way Miko punches Knockout in the series finale. One hit, and we're done here.
Tumblr media
(Sorry for the crunchy quality screenshot, my internet connection is a bit crunchy itself at the moment lmao)
Now, Miko wasn't there to witness this, but we know Miko frequently asks the others to tell her about anything she misses, either because she's been asked to stay home or because things kicked off when she was otherwise not around. She likes to hear battle stories. She's actively jealous of the others when they get to go deal with cool shit and she can't for various reasons.
So we can assume that she asked Jack what happened, or perhaps Ratchet briefed everyone once the other Autobots were revived from temporary stasis, and she would have been present for that in the base.
Miko holds a grudge. There is an entire episode where her and Wheeljack essentially go on an ill-advised revenge mission after Bulkhead is injured. She operates on that mafia level shit, wanting revenge so badly that she essentially withholds information from Wheeljack until he agrees to let her tag along.
And while she learned from that experience, it does hint at the type of mindset she has-- Don't fuck with her friends, or she will very much hold onto that anger until she gets the chance to act on it.
When she punches Knockout, it's a quick, clean punch. Which makes sense contextually for that scene, she's not going to haul completely off on him in that moment.
But it also echoes how Ratchet dealt with him when Knockout was threatening Jack, and that seems like the kind of detail Miko would remember after having it described to her.
She has a bit of a vengeful streak, and even though she does learn not to act on desires for revenge, she's still a kid and god she loves fighting so much, and there is no way she forgot about that one time Knockout tried to kill her friend with a fucking drill-- Even if she didn't get to witness it, it's likely she was told about it in some way, and she's been holding onto that for a while.
So I just really like that her punching Knockout is a mirror of when Ratchet punched Knockout previously, because we know she's very good at paying attention to detail when it comes to fighting, and we know that she learns from observation and from listening to battle stories.
It makes a lot of sense if she just recognised Knockout as being that one bot who nearly killed Jack and remembered how Jack likely described the incident to her later (or may have gotten details from any debriefing Ratchet may have provided at the base), and in that moment recalled that Ratchet took him down in one hit, so she should probably just do the same.
It's quick, it worked before on this exact bot, it'll probably work again.
Miko does learn. She very much holds a grudge. And I like that even though her actions in the finale make sense even without the possible background connection to a prior episode, it does perfectly make sense either way.
You know she begged Jack for all the details later, and you know she committed that shit to memory.
If Ratchet can knock out Knockout, so can she.
And she's not having their victory moment fucked up by some dude who seriously put them in danger on many previous occasions, even if he came around to the "winning team" in the end.
anyway you just know Miko is a mascot for the Wreckers later on, like there's no way Wheeljack and/or Bulkhead doesn't custom paint the side of a ship at some point like a WW2 aircraft lmao but it's just a painting of Miko laughing maniacally while punching a boulder or something

Make my coffee sweet and warm, just the way you used to lie in my arms
The idea for this fic came to me when I was sitting in a coffee shop and saw a barista with purple hair. Pain continues leading me to art :) English is not my native language, errors may occur. As always, feel free to share your thoughts :)

“This latte is disgusting!” You were sitting in the coffee shop with your friend.
“It could be worse, Y/N.” Your friend said, sipping her espresso.
“Oh, yeah. This’s not coffee, this's some kind of slop.” You opened your laptop and took out a notebook. “So, what do we have with the exhibition. Look, I received some corrections from Mr. Thompson he said Mr. Monkey D. Luffy wants this exposure to stand here in the corner, and this one should be moved here. Do you remember how hysterical he threw the last time that his new exposure was not seen? I can't stand another evening like this.” You added more sugar to the cup. “No, it's impossible to drink. Wait for me, I'll be right there.”
You slammed your palms on the table and went to the counter. There was no one behind it.
“Hey, who's making coffee here? Hey?” You knocked on the table.
"Why are you yelling, sweet cake?!” A tall man with a red nose, blue hair and makeup on his face came swaying from the kitchen. “I have a terrible hangover. What do you want?”
“At least that explains why we drink disgusting coffee in the morning.” You looked at him, crossing your arms. “Do you even know how to brew it? Or did you take makeup lessons instead of barista courses? Sorry, but your crossed bones on your face and smeared lipstick look much better than the crap you served us in these cups.”
“Fuck it. Do you have anything substantive to say? I was actually sleeping.” The man scratched his head and poured himself some coffee from the coffee pot. “It's a good coffee. So, do you have any other complaints?” He leaned his elbows on the counter.
You growled, slammed your palm on the table again and went to your table.
You sat with your friend, discussing the exhibition, when she suddenly received a message.
“Damn, Y/N. This is Thompson. He says there is an urgent order, a certain Mr. Jinbe will be exhibiting in the central gallery. I’ll leave for a couple of hours and come back.”
Your friend packed her things, grabbed her laptop and quickly ran away. The only people left in the coffee shop were you, the clown barista and a couple of customers who came in to take their coffee to go. You carefully watched the barista, who dropped every single item he grabbed in his hands, cursed under his breath and did not behave very kindly with visitors.
The clown made two lavender rafs, practically threw the cups on the counter, took the money, and swore again as the customers left. He muttered something under his breath and headed towards the front door. You watched him out of the corner of your eye.
“What are you doing?” You asked, watching him change the sign on the door to “closed.”
“I’m closing the coffee shop, can’t you see it?” He muttered.
“It's only 8 am.” You answered, looking at your watch.
“So what? I’m already tired. Why can’t they drink coffee at home?” The clown walked along the counter, turned behind it, and took out a bottle of whiskey.
“Great. The clown locked me in a coffee shop at 8 am, and he is already drinking whiskey.” You smiled and started typing. “Make me more of your disgusting coffee, since I'm stuck with you.”
He growled in response, rolled his eyes, quickly took a sip of whiskey and began making coffee. At that moment you received a call.
“What do you mean you won't come back?” You asked in surprise. “Damn. Call me when you're done.” You threw the phone on the table. “Crap.”
“Bad morning?” The clown asked, pouring coffee into your mug.
“Not your business!” You barked.
“Easy, sweet cake! Your coffee.” He came over and set you coffee and a plate of eclair.
“I didn't order this.” You pointed at the eclair.
“At my expense. To smooth out your morning.”
“Oh. Thank you.” You pushed the plate towards you.
He sat down opposite you and took a sip from the bottle. “What are you doing?” He asked, putting his foot on the table.
You raised an eyebrow. “Working.”
“I understand that. I mean, what do you do for a living?”
“Ah, I’m an exhibition coordinator.” You took a sip of your coffee and cleared your throat, “Oh my god. Did you put whiskey in my coffee?”
“Now it's more fun, right?” He laughed.
“You're an idiot?” You wiped your mouth with your palm.
“Oh, don't be so boring. What's your name, by the way?”
“What? Shit! Y/N. And your name? The man who pours whiskey into his coffee.” You chuckled.
“Hi, Y/N. I’m Buggy!”  He held out the bottle to you. You looked at him for a few seconds, then took the mug in your hand and lightly clinked it against the neck of the bottle.
You took a sip of your coffee and took a bite of your eclair. “No, the coffee is disgusting. And with whiskey it got even worse.”
Buggy took your mug, poured the coffee into the nearby flowers and poured you some whiskey.
“I can’t drink. I’m working, Buggy!” You looked at him for a while, then pushed the glass closer and took a sip of the whiskey.
“Have a wonderful day at work, baby!” He raised his glass and winked.
He took a sip of whiskey, loudly put the glass on the table, and walked out the door into the kitchen. You were calmly typing the text when you heard a crash from the other room.
“Hey, you. Buggy. Are you alive?”
There was no answer.
You took another sip of whiskey and stared at the door. You took another drink, then got up from your seat and went to the kitchen.
You carefully looked behind the door. “Is there anyone? Are you alive? I heard a noise.” The sound of swearing reached you. You walked towards Buggy and saw him with a burnt hand.
“What happened?” You asked, approaching him.
“I took out fucking trays with fucking croissants.”
“Do you have a first aid kit?” You asked, looking at his hand.
Buggy glanced at the box. You took out your bag of medicine and took his hand.
“What are you doing?” He asked in surprise.
“I’m treating your hand, idiot. Who goes into the oven without gloves.”
“Don't touch me!” Buggy tried to pull his hand back, but you held it tightly.
“No way. I'm stuck here with you, and I can't let the only person with the key lose his arm because of stupid croissants.”
Buggy looked at you with his green eyes, not understanding why you were showing concern. You wrapped his hand in a bandage and gently ran your fingers over his palm.
“There you go. Just like new, huh?” You smiled and didn’t even realize how you ran your hand through his blue hair. Buggy kept his eyes on you and suddenly took your hand. You ran your fingers over his cheek and chin and didn’t realize how you pressed your lips into his.
Buggy abruptly wrapped his arms around you, turned you around and sat you on the table.
You took off his shirt and began to unbutton his pants as he ran his lips down your neck.
“Fuck, I've never done anything like that.” You whispered, taking off your t-shirt.
“Me too, sweet cake.” Buggy said between kisses.
“It's your fucking whiskey.” You ran your hands over his biceps.
“Maybe,” Buggy said, taking off his underwear and pants.
“I'll give you a bill for ruining my morning.” You said, pressing your lips against his. You felt his tongue slide between your lips. You moaned through the kiss.
“Oh, Y/N, I’ll pay you right now.” Buggy took off your skirt and underwear. You wrapped your arms and legs around him as you felt him enter you sharply in your aching cunt.
“Fuck!!” Your skin heated up, the burning sensation flared up.
Buggy’s lips captured yours greedily. The spark that lighted up you inside made your hips grind and reached up to run your fingers through his long hair. His gripped on your wrist and thigh tightens, pressing your thigh against his as he growls, leaking desire and sex.
“Oh, shit. So good!” You felt his teeth nipping your lips, his hand squeezed your ass and the other touched your nipples.
Buggy gripped your ass tightly, putting cock deeper in your cunt. “Fuck, Y/N. You’re amazing.”
“Don’t stop, please!” You whispered.
The kitchen table shook from the force of him, bowls and utensils fell off the table. You threw your head back, and Buggy used the opportunity to mark your shoulders with his lipstick traces, growling, grunting, hearing your moans.
“So good, Buggy. Just fuck me.” Your hands hooked against his back. That was all new. New sensations from the way a strange clown barista fucks you.
As you clung to him and move closer to him, you moaned against his lips as his pace quickens.
“You like that, Y/N?” He thrusts wildly, your name moaning on his lips as his arms tighten around you. Cunt tight around his cock as he hammered against your cervix, he loved the feeling of you.
“Fuck, Buggy!” You moaned his name loudly, your eyes rolled, it was hard for you to focus on anything else, only on his cock fucking you senseless.
Your legs trembling as they tighten around his waist, your body shaking against him, nails digging hard. Your cunt clenches around Buggy's cock, feeling every curve, every vein as he fucks you harder, when you are arching your back. His lips on your neck, growling loudly and grunting with every thrust.
“Scream for me, my sweet cake.” Buggy whispered in your ear.
And you cried out, the pleasure still comes as he fucked you. Ecstasy flew through your veins, each touch scalding you. His cock insulted your insides and your body shook and convulsed, completely overwhelmed by his power.
Buggy kissed your cheek, sighing, grunting, growling, praising your body with every hammering thrust. His hips moved faster, stuttering, your body almost completely limp in his arms except for yours still tightly gripping his shoulders and clawing.
Buggy’s thrusts became harsh, his hands squeezed your body tightly, his breathing became ragged and raspy between moans. His rough breaths, rumbling moans as he threw his head back, when he came.
Both panting against each other, pressing themselves against each other, Buggy pressed his cheek against yours, inhaling deeply to take in your scent.
“The sex was amazing, Buggy. But the coffee is still crap.” You said and kissed him on the lips.

A Pilot's Work is Never Done | John Price x m!reader
@guardkeywolf asked: Male Reader X Price where Price tries to get Male Reader to take a break from his work (dudes a workaholic) and uses his "puppy dog eyes" and the male reader just cant say no to him because he's so deeply in love with Price...
"And don't you dare try and give me the puppy dog eyes"
summary: Price hates seeing you overworked, he hates seeing you exhausted and tired and not being able to speak to you for more than five minutes.
tws: smoking, swearing
When Cohen first assigned you to filling out the squadron's reports, you tolerated it, as you knew that Cohen liked all RAF records to be neat and tidy and to be as professionally filled out as possible; Bashar and Perveen had already done their share, so all you had to do was yours, as well as filling out some other field reports and the reports on the state of the planes. It wasn't as much fun as flying, but it had to be done, and you tolerated it as much as you could; besides, it gave you an excuse to stay home. A pilot's work was never done, anyway... but you couldn't deny that you preferred working at home. At home, you could stay nice and warm, not having to worry about some young recruit running in and asking for advice on dog fighting or providing air support to the soldiers in the ground. At home, you could sit back and relax while you worked.
It was better that Price was home, too, with the task force on leave, you had him entirely to yourself, well, mostly anyway. There had been a few phone calls from Soap asking for help with cooking and cleaning, and a few from Gaz just checking in. Gaz even popped over a few times, just to stop for a quick cup of tea and a smoke; Ghost came over here and there for the same reasons, although never announced when and never contacted you or Price by phone either.
Working at home, though, you didn't have to miss it, and nor did you have to miss how it felt being around Price so much; cups of coffee made exactly how you liked them, cigarettes rolled for you every time he smoked a cigar, a nice soft bed to snuggle up in as he watched the football - always promising that you could watch EastEnders right after and never breaking that promise. Listening to him snore softly at night and being woken up by his gruff and hoarse voice in the morning as he kissed your neck oh so gently. Hearing him tell people on the phone that he was actually spending time with his husband, even though you had not yet had a nikkah ceremony; seeing that, in his contacts on his phone, he even had you listed as such.
Not his boyfriend, not his partner, not his significant other, his husband. It always made you smile when he did that, and you were pretty sure that he knew.
You weren't sure how long you had been working today, though, cans of Red Bull littered the kitchen table and the ashtray had been emptied multiple times, an empty plate sat behind the ashtray stone cold even though you could have sworn you had eaten not that long ago; an ache settled in your neck, and your wrists were hurting from how much you had written down. But you weren't about to stop. You had far too much paperwork to get through to even think about stopping; but Price had noticed, and he wasn't exactly happy about it. He never wanted you to be overworked, and even fought with Cohen a few times about forcing you to take holidays even though you said you didn't want to; you worked too much as it was, and Price wasn't about to let you work yourself into the ground when you were at home.
"C'mon," Price said, tugging at your chair and leaning against the table, blocking your view of the papers. "Take a break now, baby."
You shook your head, making an effort to get up when he gently pushed you down and shook his head, forcing you to glare at him for a moment. "John, I have work."
"You're home," he growled, folding his arms across his chest. "You ain't working, not if I can help it... besides, it's nearly tea time and you've had bugger all since dinner."
"Has it actually been that long?" You furrowed your brows, looking at the clock beside the fridge for a moment, chewing at the inside of your lip. "Oh, fuck me..."
Price licked his lips, sighing as he looked at you with worry; sure, he knew it wasn't easy to be part of the RAF, he knew that you and your squadron had a tough time and that paperwork was especially a bore and that record keeping had to be done a lot more formally and professionally than his task force did, but he hated seeing you so wrapped up in it. Edging towards being overworked with every passing second. He grabbed your empty plate, and took it to the dishwasher. "You're gonna work yourself to death, (y/n)... gonna get carpal tunnel in both hands at this rate, in all."
You rubbed the back of your neck, your knees clicking when you dared to get up, only to roll yourself a cigarette and sit back down at the table again. "insha'Allah, I can get it all done today."
Price shook his head again, wondering what the fuck he could do to make you actually stop working for just a moment; he considered asking Laswell to get Cohen and to give him an earful about giving a Flight Lieutenant the job of a Air Chief Marshal, but then he remembered that you had agreed to take on such a job, and he grumbled. That wasn't going to work.
Besides, Cohen was off for the next two and a half weeks so that he had enough time so that he could celebrate Chanukah with his family back in Llanfairpwllgwyngyll as well as to actually see them and be with them before the eight days; Cohen always took extra days off for religious events and days, even the less significant ones like Chanukah, and Price couldn't blame him. It was difficult to spend time with family when one's job was to be halfway across the world most of the time.
Perveen was about, as Guru Nanak Jayanti had been a while ago now and he didn't have any other holy days or events coming up; but he had gone to Punjab with his father for a few days to spend some time with family over there. So he was ruled out, too.
Bashar was back in Saudi Arabia, as well, as he was visiting some of his uncle's side of the family in Qaisumah; even Pahwa had taken time off and had gone home to West Bengal for a while.
Price was at his wit's end, and wasn't entirely sure what to do as he watched you for a moment; the stress and exhaustion on your face so clear, and Price really did wonder, if only for a moment, if he had actually talked to you for more than five minutes that day. He realised that he hadn't, and when he looked at the clock again, slowly starting to approach seventeen hundred hours, he had decided that he had had enough, and settled on using the one weapon against you that he only ever pulled out in emergencies. He made his way back over to the kitchen table, put his hand on your shoulder and cleared his throat.
"(y/n), look at me."
"I'm working," you grumbled. "And don't you dare try and give me the puppy dog eyes, I know your game, old man."
Price smiled, leaning over slightly and gently grasping your chin between his index finger and thumb, forcing you to look at him as he raised his brows a little, and did the unthinkable: flashed the puppy dog eyes. You didn't want to, but you caved almost immediately, daring to steal a quick kiss as you put your pen down and instead laid one hand on his chest, the other on the back of his neck as you let him kiss you so deeply; but then he pulled away, licking his lips as he damn near grinned. "Stop working."
You nodded, putting your hands up in mock surrender. "Alright, alright, you got me. I'll stop - for now."
"Stop for a while," he grumbled. "No more work until Monday."
You couldn't help but to obey such an order, letting him gently coax you away from the table and over to the kitchen side; he waited for you to sit up on it before he stood between your legs, his hands on the sides of your thighs as he hummed in approval at how you rested your arms on his shoulders and chewed at the inside of your lip. "Actually, I am kinda hungry..."
"We're having tea in a bit," he reminded you. "Cheese toastie?"
"Blue cheese," you corrected. "I don't want any of that cheddar shit."
Price smiled as he nodded. "Of course, Flight Lieutenant, how could I forget? I'm sorry. Do you fancy a blue cheese toastie?"
"Yeah," you smiled back, nodding slowly. "If you would, greybeard."
"Don't call me that," he said lowly, his grip in your thighs tightening slightly.
You tilted your head to the side, narrowing your eyes at him as you did your best not to laugh. "Or what, Captain? You gonna force me to shut my mouth?"
"I just might," he warned playfully. "Behave yourself, Flight Lieutenant, you don't wanna see what happens when you disobey."
"I might," you hummed. "Y'know what they say about curiosity."
Price couldn't hold it back, laughing softly as he dared to steal a kiss, fucking grinning when you smiled into it and tried to pull him a little closer by the back of his grey shirt; the one that was tight around his arms and chest and that you always stole if you wanted to wind him up. He deepened the kiss, though, making you gasp softly before you laughed and eagerly returned it; Price was a damn good distraction, you had to admit, as the second he had flashed you those puppy dog eyes of his, you couldn't even bring yourself to think about work anymore.
When he pulled away, all you could do was breathe out four little words that always made him feel giddy, "I fucking love you."

Yandere Rafael Barba Headcanons
warnings: obsession, manipulation, mentions of sex, pregnancy, guilt-tripping, birthing
Tumblr media
- Barba is intensely possessive and not afraid to go into morally grey areas
- when he falls in love with you, he’s already decided that it’s forever
- he’s going to tell his mamí about you, and she’s going to insist on grandchildren as soon as possible
- you probably work at SVU, as he is very guarded with his heart and only falls in love if he is around someone a lot
- but with you, he fell hard
- he knows you’re the one the moment he exits the elevator and sees you running through a case with Carisi
- he thought with his age he’d never get the chance to get married, have a family, build a life
- but when he sees you, he knows you will be his wife
- a bright young woman who is passionate about her job, intelligent and graceful
- you’re only meant to be a temporary replacement while Amanda was on maternity leave
- but Rafael practically begs Olivia to keep you on full-time, stating that you’re a natural at SVU
- which is true, and Olivia loves you, so she keeps you on
- we know that Barba is a very, very intelligent man, and even more when his obsession is concerned
- he uses subtle manipulation on you to assert his dominance and make you fall in love with him
- he honestly never considered having kids before you
- he was too scared he’d end up like his father
- you’re testifying for a case Rafael is trying, so he brings you up to the courtroom late at night to practice
- when you’re done, the two of you just talk for a bit and he approaches you with those dark eyes
- he slams your back against the stand and basically ravages you like a man starving, ripping off your clothes and fucking you like there’s no tomorrow
- it was the best sex you’d ever had
- soon, the two of you are dating and things move very quickly
- he will accuse you of spending too much time with the men on your squad, even Fin who is like a father to you
- he will demand all of your free time be spent with him
- even if he’s working on a case, he wants you in his office sitting there with him
- he convinces you to get married in a court ceremony with only his mother as a witness
- he promises you an extravagant honeymoon when his case load evens out
- he calls you sweetheart, cariño, mi vida
- Barba will not kidnap you, he is much smarter than that
- instead, he gets in your head and plants these ideas: about motherhood, the job being dangerous, the luxurious life of a trophy wife you could have with him
- if you aren’t really interested in having kids, he doesn’t care. he just thinks you need to be convinced that you’d be a good mother
- if you care more about your job than a kid, then get ready
- because you end up quitting the job a few weeks after you find out you’re pregnant
- yes: he gets you assigned to SVU to get closer to him and then manipulates you into quitting a year later
- Rafael convinces you it’s unsafe for you and your unborn baby, even so early on
- and of course, he has more than enough money to support you and reward you by purchasing your dream brownstone house in Brooklyn
- the team is not happy you’re outright quitting, especially at the prompting of your husband
- you insist that it’s for the best, and you made the decision too
- you wanted the option to be open for you to return to SVU, but you likely never would
- you stop answering calls, not realizing Rafael had new walls installed in your new house to block phone and internet signals
- whenever the squad asks about you, Raf says, “her and the baby are perfectly fine.” short and sweet.
- you see the squad at events occasionally, when your husband actually lets you out of the house
- Carisi, Rollins and Benson saw you at an NYC Law Enforcement Gala about five months after you left the team
- they barely recognize you: dressed to the nines, baby bump, makeup and hair done
- you’re just a trophy wife on Barba’s arm, almost being guarded by him
- he sends his mother, Lucia, to the house to spend time with you before the baby comes
- and she LOVES you and that baby
- but if there was any question in your mind about leaving your husband, it leaves you when you hear Lucia speak
- she never means to guilt trip you but she tells you stories about Rafael’s tragic past, his father, him only ever falling in love with work
- mostly, she’s just happy to see Barba head-over-heels for someone
- she is over the moon that she will be getting grandchildren, and even more excited that it’s with you
- Rafael will insist on a home birth, citing "too many dangers in hospitals"
- instead of getting a midwife, he does everything himself. no pain meds, just you pushing your child out into his hands
- you’re exhausted when he pulls out your newborn son and you’ve never seen him so excited
- Raf has that charming smile on his face, holding your son to his naked chest as you pant in exhaustion
- you are excited to build your little family, but you miss your job, friends and family a lot
- you love him, you really do. and if you don’t, you will convince yourself.

This ask game
TFP Kids teaching Eren how to do a High Five in the War Timeline.
"Raf!" Eren called out as the pre-teen ended up hitting his side against a tree branch. He flew up to Rafael to help him down and check if he was hurt.
"I'm good." Rafael rubbed his side, "This is really hard. I'm just surprised that Jack and Miko are making it look easy."
Eren looked upwards to see Jack and Miko flying through the tree with their personalized 3D gear equipment. Rafael was right. They were making this look easy. They were struggling heavily in the beginning, crashing into each other and everything else, but now they were already flying around with ease and grace.
"Whoo!" Miko cheered as she started leaping from each tree branch while Jack was evading each branch that he could see coming. Both ended up flying back around to Eren and Rafael's location. They both landed on the ground before unhooking their wires.
"Jack! We're medieval spidermen!" Miko raised her hand to Jack, causing Eren to raise an eyebrow in confusion. "C'mon, Jack, don't leave me hanging!"
Jack rolled his eyes and smiled before raising his hand. Miko then slapped it hard before screaming with excitement.
"What...was that?" Eren tilted his head in confusion, causing all three to stare at him.
"What was what?" Jack asked.
"Why did she slap your hand?" Eren asked.
"Wait, you guys don't have high fives?!" Miko exclaimed.
"'High fives'?" Eren repeated, causing Miko to groan in annoyance.
"I don't think high fives have even been around for that long," Jack reasoned.
"But why do you do it?" Eren asked, "What's the point of slapping someone else's hand like that?"
"Just a show of good faith," Rafael answered, "Like a 'job well done' or 'we completed the task together'. That kind of thing."
"It's easy," Jack reassured as he raised his palm, "Just slap my hand."
Eren stared at Jack's hand with caution before raising his own and hitting his palm lightly.
"C'mon, Eren! A little more force!" Miko told him.
Eren tried again, but following Miko's advice, he practically slapped Jack's hand. It did sting his hand a little bit, but Jack wasn't fazed at all.
"There we go, that's better!" Jack praised him.
"And you guys do this all the time?" Eren asked.
"Pretty much," Rafael answered.
"What about the others?" Eren pointed behind him, trying to gesture to the Autobots.
"Some of them do it," Jack explained.
"But we both know Doc and Boss Bot won't," Miko added, "I think Bulk mentioned something about the Wreckers having their own handshake."
"Can I try again?" Eren asked. He kind of liked this moment of inclusion. However, he didn't like the mischievous look on Miko's face.
"Up high!" Miko raised her hand up in the air, and Eren was able to give her a high five.
"Down low!" Miko lowered her hand and laid out an open palm. Eren was about to hit it, but she swiped her hand away before he could.
"Too slow!" Miko grinned in victory.
"Hey, Miko," Jack scolded.
"C'mon! This is the first time we can actually pull that off!" Miko retorted, "Everyone else on Earth knows it."
Rafael ignored them and merely raised his hand up. "Thanks for helping me out up there."
Eren smiled at Rafael before giving the pre-teen a high five. "You're welcome, Raf."
"Hey, Eren, I got another one for you!" Miko proclaimed eagerly.
"No," Jack warned her.
"Boo!" Miko jeered at him.
(The Walls wouldn't know anything about a high five so I figured the TFP kids would introduce it. Anyway, 75 and 13 have been asked. The rest is free game.)

ok i’m gonna talk about the RWRB Movie...
SPOILER: i’m gonna be negative and i’m not planning on watching the movie (i guess that means ppl are gonna block me??? idk why ppl are just mass blocking because of this but whatever) (edit: per a suggestion I swapped the tag on this post so it isn't tagged under "rwrb movie")
so i’m gonna start by saying that i’ve watched the trailer a few times and honestly i love the vibes, it makes me smile ever time.
-the kiss is great
-the butt slap is everything
-Henry’s facial expressions *chefs kiss*
-the visible chain around Alex neck. yes
i’m also gonna say that its great that people ARE going to see the movie, we need more queer movies and the only way for that to happen is if ppl watch the ones that are being made now.
so the bad.
honestly i could deal with a lot of the little things.  like they make my eye twitch a little but i do actually understand that you can’t 100% remake a book into a movie.
 BUT
it’s June that i can’t forgive.
if i’m wrong and she is in the movie than amazing and i redact everything but it doesn’t seem to be that way.
removing June makes me SO angry.  its like removing Alice from Twilight or Sam from Lord of the Rings.  if Main Characters are just the romantic leads (Alex and Henry) than June defiantly falls into secondary tier - all the Super Six kinda do (Bea would be the most removable for me but is is also necessary for Henry’s development as much as June is for Alex.
June balances Alex out.  the book even specifically states WHY all of the White House Trio are needed (page 28: “Alex pushes them. June steadies them. Nora keeps them honest.”) She keeps him sane and she put her life on hold to watch out for Alex, and Alex knows this!
the idea of Alex being an only child is terrifying.  he is already kinda selfish (i say that lovingly) and “a little shit” without growing up with an older sibling to shut him up he would be a monster (and Nora doesn’t count because first they don’t actually meet until Ellen is running with Mike as VP and second Nora’s personality is to “go with the flow” to really steady Alex)
June also has some important moments that happen in the book! like it doesn’t really work to have Nora be fake dating Henry for the like 2 days that that happens and no June means no Magazine moment (i know that isn’t really directly in the book but its a fav for everyone).  no June also really changes the tone of the Lake House....
ANWAY, moving away from June here is some other things that i don’t like (because its my rant and i want to, feel free to change my mind)
- the height difference (i did love the lifts comment in the trailer but idk if they’ll be able to keep that up in a way that makes since - that means that if they are every barefoot Alex would have to be shorter *cough* like swimming)
-the actor for Alex is to old.  i know ppl are really split about this but the actor feels put together and like an adult to me (vs. book Alex feels very young - or he honestly acts his age of 21/22).  i think the polo match scene says a lot for me in the postures of the 2 actors, Henry is ok (tho honestly i think he wouldn’t have the loose posture once he rejoined ppl but its cute so pass) but Alex is to stiff, he should be almost bouncing as he walks.
-WFT is Ellen’s accent in the trailer???
-i heard a rumor that Raf and Liam are merged and redone.  Gross and big no.
-King instead of Queen.  i understand why this was done but the tone changes a lot in my head of abusive Grandpa vs. Grandma
-Zahra.  don’t like, the vibe is off with the actress... can’t explain why except the smile in the photos and the bow in the trailer
-i feel like some of the scenes feel still (this is 100% my opinion and i could be reading this VERY wrong so ignore this if you interpret it differently)
i really wanted to like the movie but realistically i probably wouldn’t watch the movie anyway because i have issues with that so..... i guess it doesn’t matter.
i hope ppl who watch it enjoy it and please separate tags of movie vs book, thanks

@jamespotterthefirst @genevievemd i want to dedicate this little fanfic to you two because your post and comment was perfectly hilarious and because the Open Heart fanfics of you two were the first i read. I hope you like it a little.
As always, English is not my mother language, i'm sorry for any mistakes.
If you don’t like it then you should have take your suite off
Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan x F!MC
2.11 alternate version
Warnings: cursing
Everyone storms off, all of them willing to do everything possible to save Casey and Raf. Only Ethan stays behind, his piercing gaze on Casey.
He is quiet for a while. "Are you okay?" His heart ached, she is here, fighting for her life and yet she asks, if he is okay. "No, Casey, I'm not okay. But you don’t need to hear about that. You should try and get some rest. Have you slept at all?"
He remembers the two nights, she was sleeping in his arms and how happy he was in these moments. How could he waste so much precious time? "No. I can’t stop thinking about Rafael. How long he can last... whether... whether it's already..." "Do you want me to stay with you for a while?" "The others won’t miss you?" "Tobias knows what he is doing. And Elijah was right. Considering what we know about maitotoxins, this is a chemistry problem now. This is where i can do the most good. That is... if you want me here with you."
He is nervous, he would understand, if she'd kicked hm out. "Of course i want you to stay with me. If this is my last night alive, I want to spend it with you." "If i was in your position, I'd feel the same way about you." "Really?" "Really, Casey." She can’t help but smile, he always makes her feel happy and safe.
Ethan suits up and enters the room, gently guiding her to the bed. "Now lie down. As impossible as it sounds, you need to try relax. Think about something happy." She climbs into the bed and Ethan covers her with the blanket, pulling a seat right next to her. "I'm trying, but... I just feel like there were so many things i should have done." "Like what?" She considers. "I should have worked harder." She is unbelievable. "I'm not sure that is physically possible, Casey. I say this as the man who signs off on your time sheet every week." "There‘s still plenty more I could have done. If i'd work harder in high school i could have moved up a year and graduated early. I could have been further in my career by now. I could have helped more people."
He can't help the smile, she is so damn cute, even under this terrible circumstances she has to face. "Casey, with all due respect, that's deranged." "You can’t knock my deathbed regrets! It's not allowed!" He tries not to wince at her words. "Firstly, this isn’t a deathbed. Secondly, I don’t recall there being any universal deathbed etiquette." "Sure there is. 'Don’t dispute the dying person'." He knows she needs this to stay strong and not be confronted with her fear, what by all means sure will be worries about him and her friends but not her own fate. "Not even if the so-called dying person is a workaholic in need of a deathbed intervention?" "Not even then." "Noted."
He smiles at her and it warms her heart but she can sense his worries and he is quiet for a long moment, looking at his hands. He struggles, but then he makes up his mind, he won’t waste more time hiding his feelings for her. "Since we're sharing regrets, do you mind if I share one of mine?" "Go ahead." His gloved hand reaches for hers, looking down at them.
Before he speaks up again he looks her in the eyes. "I wish I hadn’t asked you to stay away." "You do?" "We've wasted so much time. I've wasted so much time. I should have held you in my arms every day and told you how much I...", he hesitates for just a moment. "How much I care about you." His words hit her right into the heart and against all the worries she feels happy. "Ethan, I've always thought we should be together." "You have?" The smile on his face was infectious. "Kind of thought it was obvious, actually." "I'd hate to presume anything. Though... that feeling was very definitely mutual."
He holds her hand tightly, the smile not leaving his face. He looks so happy. She wishes... "i wish i could kiss you." "Soon. You will soon." Her happiness fades as quickly as it came. "Casey? What's wrong?" "It just hit me that Rafael might be the last real human contact I ever have to get, not through plastic." He looks at her, the realization that he wasted so much time with her gets heavier and heavier on his mind.
"I'm sorry, i know it’s unfair and stupid to think like that. It's just that... what are you doing, Ethan?" She looks confused as he stands up from her bed and starts to slip out of the suite. "Ethan! Stop! I'm calling for the others." He peels the gloves off. "Try it, until they are here, i'm already out of this thing and babe, you are too weak to stop me." And with that he takes of the helmet. Casey is shocked, tears run over her face, but she doesn’t seem to recognize. When he steps out of the suite, he gently grabs her arms sitting down with her on the bed so they can look into each others eyes.
"Casey, this won’t be your last night, i'll stop it, we'll stop it and you will be safe again. But i won’t let any chance passing by of being with you, no matter what." And with this he takes her face gently but determined in his hands and kisses her. He easily lifts her up into his lap, pulling her as close as possible. When they break apart, it's her turn to grab his face in her hands. "You are unbelievable, do you know that? How could you do that?" New tears make their way down her cheeks. "They'll find a cure in no time."
He shrugs. "But what if they don’t?" "Then i'm right where i want to be. What should i do without you in this fucking world?" When the meaning of his words downs on her, she strokes his cheeks and then wraps her arms around him. He holds her tight as if he's never gonna leave her.
After a while she finally falls asleep in his arms, snuggling into his chest, while he watches every move of her, gently rubbing her back. "Ethan! What the fuck happened?" Harper shouts, Naveen stands next to her, shaking his head, but not able to hide a knowing smile. "Sssshhh, she is asleep." He carefully entangles himself from her and walks to the window as if it was normal chatting with his colleagues. "Ethan, what happened? Why aren’t you wearing a suite?" He looks down his body as if he had forgotten that his protectional suite was missing.
"There was a a cut in one of my gloves, so i put myself into quarantee." "You could have called us." "Why, you are finding a cure anyway, so no big deal, if there is a patient more." Without another word and a shake of her head, Harper storms down the floor. Naveen steps closer to the window. "Do you have any symptoms yet?" "No." "Good, i hope the next time you need a kick in the ass, please make sure, it won’t be that dangerous again."

Finished S2! S1 thoughts here!
(Forgot to post this lmao)
If they're not gonna help him could the 'cons at least get Soundwave some Cybertronian ibuprofen or something? For his back?
3 different clip show episodes! Needed to pad the runtime of this season, hmm?
Orion Pax was very fun and cool
Operation: Bumblebee didn't quite top Stronger, Faster, but it damn sure tried its best
'Though the medic... could have done better' AUGH
That entire exchange between Bumblebee and Knock Out ('WHAT is with the Rent-A-Car????') was absolute perfection, my favourite moment being Knock Out noticing that Bumblebee was no longer chasing him and literally stopping to talk shit in the middle of his mission. We love a man with priorities
RIP Breakdown, you didn't deserve that buddy
People were saying that KO had no noticeable reaction to Breakdown's death, so I was a little wary, but while we didn't get the immediate reaction, we absolutely got the aftermath
Namely, Knock Out becomes increasingly more reckless, speaking out while Megatron is in the room (where before he mostly only spoke when referred to) and becoming bolder in those conversations, such as shouting at the Insecticons, becomes far less focused during missions, preferring to stand and talk shit/make puns, and while he does not visibly mourn Breakdown, he mentions him a fair few times and it's likely he does not even know that he's dead
Triage my beloved. I get it now.
The whole aftermath of Toxicity, and Miko failing to find closure with Wheeljack, and that shot of Wheeljack turning and limping back out of base because nobody will talk to him and he's just made it worse? Perfection.
Bulkhead's healing arc itself was a little. Mmh. Miko why is your characterisation like this?? I want to like you!
My initial reaction to Smokescreen was 'oh I hate his ass' and then now I'm like 'omg Smokescreen hi!!!'
Raf's mom did NOT notice he's been disappearing every weekend and every weekday after school, but him dropping to an A- was what got her attention? Yeah okay lady.
Also, she had no questions to the adult man in a suit being in the 'study group'???
Did she even know which child was hers????
The slow realisation that the 'cons are getting closer and closer to figuring out where the autobot base is? Hell YEAH
Alpha Trion's voice was so similar to a comedy voice I know that I didn't register a goddamn thing he said bc I was too busy laughing, but then the pan back to Optimus' face where he just looks like he's not paying attention at ALL-
KO panicking and trying to yank out the brain wire so Megatron would be stuck in Starscream. Bestie how did you think that would end. You're just lucky Dreadwing was too busy betraying Megatron to tell him about that
Also RIP Dreadwing, you didn't really do... much at all actually, but at least you weren't Starscream so you had that going for you
Jam jars; the perfect human containment systems
Also KO and Starscream fucking with their captives vs Soundwave just holding Raf. He has other priorities okay. Like carrying.
Ratchet's reaction to the mission (anxiety) and then his reaction to the fact that Optimus just destroyed the lock... love that
Ratchet's reaction to Wheeljack turning up, we've only seen him that happy at the end of Operation: Bumblebee and hell YEAH I get it now
They are SUPREMELY good at season endings

The Wilds season 2 comments
 ASDFGHJKL!!!
This season was gooooooooooooooood omg!
Such a PLEASURE to get my girls back! My precious babiiiiiiies T-T
I missed them so much.
So i'm going to rant a little :D
careful, spoilerish!
I really enjoyed this season, and i think i was -thankfully- in the right set of mind. I mean, i wasn't super thrilled about the boys, but i didn't let it go into my head and took a massive break from social media regarding the show. So, i was open minded and all in all, i liked the boys just fine!
They were a little less flesh out than the girls in season 1 (obviously) and they did take time from the unsinkable 8 (obviously again lol). But i enjoyed what the writers have done with them. For example Kirin grew on me. And i liked that we can make several parallels between them and the girls. (I associated Kirin with Toni a lot, and more than with Rachel).
On a side note, i feel like Gretchen really set up the boys for failure, or at least pushed onto them more difficulties. Even though not in the way i was expecting it, but it made sense that it would be discreet and subtle for the "data" between the groups to be comparable. For the experiment to still seem fair and the conclusions plausible. And it shows her intelligence and viciousness. I do not like her, and i like that!
I liked the rhythm of the episodes, how they switched from the boys to the girls to past and present. It wasn't confusing (i was watching tired af in the middle of the night). And i loved how the drama of the girls was completely different in nature (and not always how and where i expected it) compared to season 1 (really high tension, full-on survival mode); and by extension compared to the boys.
Reals spoilers the next paragraph. Back to spoilerish after that.
What bothered me/what i didn't like:
How the boys handled Seth after his assault on Josh. It was a mess, and that was fine to portray, i wasn't expecting something very different. But what did bother me is what Raf said at some point. Something along the line of "who are we to judge?". I get what he was trying to say, and to some extent, he's not wrong. But my boy, Raf, you have a fucking conscience. You know what's right or wrong, the problem isn't there, you can and you should judge such actions. The problem was on the sentence and how it was conducted. So, if the problem is not clearly and correctly formulated, the resolution won't be satisfactory. And by resolution, i mean how the group actually went back to Seth for his leadership. I get their lack of possibilities, and the life/death situation they're in, but that could have been handled better IMO. It weakened the all "mercy" thing in my eyes (not particularly talking about Ivan here, really the whole situation).
Josh. It's not that i don't like him, but it feels like he's the one that the writer made the less relatable, at least that's how i feel. Which is kinda too bad bc I could have really related to the type of problems he went through :/
Less screen time for the girl, more particularly Dot and Fatin.
Martha. My poor baby went through so much T_T
What i liked:
Kirin and Ivan. I'm not sure why Kirin grew on me so much (and he's quite far from having that much development, in fact). Maybe it will pass a bit, but for now, i do root for him. Ivan, i loved the thing about his activism. I won't say much more bc this rant is already too long, and i'm still reflecting on that part, personally. But yeah, his constant fight, his restlessness, i really enjoyed seeing that. And oc his growth.
And Bo and Scotty. They're precious.
My favorite moments:
Leah and Rachel's dynamic! Just perfect!!
Shoni was great. i looooooved how they both, in their own way and needs, made the most of the island and the freedom it gives them regarding their relationship and who they are as individuals.
Dot's birthday
The bond between the girls. How they're here for each other, respecting boundaries, leaving room to breathe but at the same time really being there, calling on the bs if needed... My heart!
Last but not least, LEATIN. Already a fan of this ship since the beginning (and I picked on the subtext fast you can't imagine). I'm still processing, but MY GOD. If the show goes there. The gays would. Be. Fed! And i'm starving XD I cannot wait for the fanfics <3
Let's wrap this up i'm losing my focus and if you're still there i took too much of your time already x) (but thanks for reading)
The end of the season definitely has me hooked for more!! It feels like it could end with a season 3 though. I hope i'm wrong, i'm kinda greedy with this show ^^'

A queer F.L.Y. on the wall during Lockdown
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/a-queer-f-l-y-on-the-wall-during-lockdown/
A queer F.L.Y. on the wall during Lockdown
Tumblr media
F.L.Y. is a slice-of-life comedy about two exes turned friends, Max and Rafael, who get stuck together at the onset of the COVID pandemic after not seeing each other in years and stars Rafael Albarran and Trent Kendrick who also wrote the film and co-directed it.
They spoke to QNews in an exclusive interview in the lead up to F.L.Y. having its International premiere at the Mardi Gras Film Festival on Friday.
QNEWS: How did you two originally meet and how did you decide to write a movie together?
TRENT: We serendipitously met on 02/02/2020 on the dance floor. After Raf gifted me a book of poetry he wrote I instinctively knew we could write together. I had also been looking to write a film that was contained and could be made with a small budget. Soon after meeting, the pandemic hit while I was dog sitting and the idea naturally flowed from there.
RAFAEL: Trent kidnapped me and took me to a cabin in the mountains of Colorado after they announced the COVID lockdown. It was just him and I and no internet. I’ve always been a writer but never had written a script myself so F.L.Y. was meant to be that writing exercise for Trent to teach me screenwriting. After the first draft was done I told him we needed to actually make it happen. I think Trent didn’t believe we could make it happen till the day of our World Premiere at Outfest Film Festival in LA.
-What’s it like acting as the leads in a film that you’re also both co-directing and were there any funny moments around that?
TRENT: I’m a director but had not professionally acted and Raf is an actor but had not directed. We just trusted each other so much going into it. I will say it was a lot to have to perform in front of the camera for the first time while simultaneously juggling so much behind the scenes. There were many “tests” along the way that in hindsight are quite comical, like the day I chipped my front tooth midway through shooting. We had to emergency fix it the next morning to avoid major continuity issues. We were just dealing with so much outside every single take to pull the whole thing off. We joke that we could make another feature about the “making of” this one. Sidenote, Raf also did costumes which is a feat in itself.
RAFAEL: It felt like playing most of the time. I’ve been an actor all my life so that was something that I was very comfortable with. It was funny to me sometimes when Trent was having trouble with a specific line or a scene. I would direct him through my acting whenever we were shooting his close-ups and as a director/actor this was trippy and fun for me. -Max, the main character of the film is someone who is very straight acting and quite traumatised about being perceived as camp or being put in the spotlight. Why was that something you wanted to explore in the film?
RAFAEL: As a community and a society we’re all trapped in the binary walls created by our cisgender culture. There’s a freedom drag queens and gender non conforming humans possess as they are constantly revolting against it or playing with it. For us it was important to tell a story of the journey to authenticity and the freedom that comes when we put down those walls.
TRENT: I think there are many people like Max who don’t always feel represented in the gay community or by gay culture. I think we need to expand our ideas of what it means to be gay or who can be gay. We’re all so different and unique- if anything I think we need to be careful of too much homogeneity within the gay community. There are a lot of “straight acting” guys who are totally gay and are not “acting” at all.
-That part of the character resonated for me as someone who has PTSD as drag performers do have this tendency to pick uncomfortable looking people and pull them up on stage so I usually hide at the back. It’s not just the fear of being put in the spotlight as someone with a social phobia but also a fear of being perceived as prejudiced against camp gay men or drag queens if I refuse to participate when I actually do enjoy the other aspects of drag shows. The one time it did happen to me, my friend and I were virtually the only people in the audience and the drag queen got me to soap down an underwear model in speedos so that wasn’t so bad but I still live in fear! Do you think drag performers should be more mindful of that?
RAFAEL: As a drag queen I always say you should always be aware of how your actions are affecting your audience but also as a drag queen I know we are clowns that are here to push boundaries and show that sense of freedom and joy that you came to be entertained with. So my advice to a fearful human is to be aware that you’re entering at your own risk to this clown show!
TRENT: I think you have to meet people where they are and encourage them to have fun and blossom without being overly forceful. It’s important to respect people’s boundaries, we might’ve carried enough trauma already.
-The film focuses on two characters who were once romantic interests but are now friends. It’s very common for gay men to be friends with their exes or people they have slept with – almost to the point that it can be hard making friends with people that you haven’t slept with. Why do you think that is?
TRENT: Yeah, I’ve noticed that in my own life too. Some of my closest friends are exes. I think when you’re gay, intimacy is shared in more casual ways and then we find some of our chosen family through those connections. But I do have to say I’ve also found it difficult to make friends with other gay guys if one person is interested sexually and the other is not. That feeling of rejection might have something to do with why it can be hard to make platonic gay friends.
RAFAEL: I personally think that’s a strength from our community. Sex is either shamed or romanticised by straight cis culture when in reality sex can be many things. It can be a way to get closer to a human without any end goal more than that of getting closer and enjoying the pleasure of one another. In queer culture this is normalised in ways that it isn’t in straight circles and in my opinion this can be healthy and make stronger bonds as an effect of it. As queer humans, a lot of our first friends or chosen family members are lovers. For us it was important to tell a story about the importance of that chosen family. When shit goes down we have each other’s back and love doesn’t have one face, it’s infinite and there’s space in it for all sorts of love and relationships.
-I’ve sometimes found it hard to make friends with guys that I have no sexual history with, even when we’re both tops. Do you think maybe there’s an inherent sexual tension between gay men in the early stages of friendship even when they both aren’t interested in sleeping together?
RAFAEL: There’s sexual desire and tensions between all sorts of humans. Every human regardless of gender or sex holds sexual energy. We just happen to act more on it than straight or other humans because of our circles and culture. But trust me everyone wants to sleep with everyone. And we all should!
-The main characters in the film are trapped together when COVID hits and they have to go into lockdown. And there are so many aspects about that that were really universal experiences that will ring true to Australian Audiences like Tiger King and the phenomenon of toilet paper hoarding. Why do you think there were these sorts of crazes that ripped around the whole world during the pandemic?
TRENT: Short answer… because we were all stuck inside with nothing to do. One of those jokes that we really loved when we were wrote the script was when Raf asks Max “What day is it?” and Max responds, “April. Still April.” Do you remember when April dragged on for like five years? We really wanted to capture the zeitgeist of the time. One thing I wish we had included the washing of groceries, which many people did, myself included.
RAFAEL: We were writing the movie as soon as lockdown happened so I think we were capturing the moment because it was happening to us as we wrote it! Makes me happy you felt it. As the hoarding comes it just tells you so much about the human race and our relationship with fear. We often act from a place of lack instead of abundance and we definitely wanted to make fun and show this universal quality we all shared in that specific moment in time.
-One thing that will be different for Australians is how present the fear of dying from COVID is for the characters in the film and the people that are dear to them. Could you talk about that?
RAFAEL: Lots of people lost loved ones during COVID and it was impossible to have funerals at the time because of it. We wanted to pay tribute and show love to all those families that experienced loss during COVID lockdown.
TRENT: People were on edge in America in the beginning as the virus started spreading. Everyone was paranoid about COVID because there were so many stories of people dying. We didn’t feel like we would do the period justice without working in the story of loss and grief.
-The actresses who play Rafael’s grandmother and mother almost steal the show even though they mostly only appear in video calls. How did you find them and did they know each other before the movie?
TRENT: That was all Raf reaching out to his connections in Puerto Rico. They really do steal the show! There were a few more scenes with them that we had to cut, including an entire scene in Puerto Rico at Raf’s family house in the beginning. That was a real bummer to remove but in filmmaking, as they say, you lose babies along the way.
RAFAEL: They had never worked together! The actress that played Mama Yoly was my first acting teacher in college and it was so special for me to have her in my first movie as a writer/director. The actress that played my grandmother was submitted by one of Puerto Rico’s leading casting directors, my very good friend Patricia Alonso. When I sent her the character breakdown asking her for help because we were struggling to find her she immediately told me with confidence “This can be my mother! Send me a scene and I’ll send you a video of her!” And that’s all it took. They were perfect and we are so lucky to have them.
-Writer-director-actor Rafael Albarran will be in attendance for a Q&A after the film when it screens on 6.30pm on Friday, February 23 at the Ritz Cinemas in Randwick

Open When Chapter 22

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 Chapter 13  Chapter 14  Chapter 15  Chapter 16 Chapter 17 Chapter 18 Chapter 19 Chapter 20 Chapter 21 When a few years into their relationship Bernie is asked to go back to the army and deploy Serena isn’t sure how she’s going to get through the nine months without her girlfriend. What she doesn’t expect is for it to be her girlfriend who has the perfect set of surprises to get her through both the best and the worst days. Canon divergent - Elinor lives (well actually the accident never happens), Raf lives, and Cameron isn’t a total ass! The staff of AAU also probably didn’t all work on there at the same time in canon but do in this! The fic is already fully written with the first few chapters having already been Beta’d. 27 chapters including the epilogue. Hoping to post every Monday and Friday!
Open when the distance is too much…
From the moment Serena wakes up she feels like the distance between her, and Bernie is threatening to make her emotions spiral out of control. She’s done well overall she thinks, during the time that Bernie has been away. She hasn’t always found it easy, but she’s found ways of coping, ways to make things seem just that little bit easier. The calendar that she uses to count down the days until Bernie’s return, the way that she has watched shows with Jason that Bernie normally would, to help her nephew get through all of it. She has got into a routine of sending frequent e-blueys and blueys to allow herself to share as much as possible with Bernie, to make Bernie smile from over three thousand miles away.
It’s funny that now just over a month before Bernie’s return the distance between them is seeming to overwhelm her. Though maybe it’s not, maybe that’s the exact reason it feels too much, that she knows how close it is. Knows how soon Bernie should be coming home and that she wants to let her excitement at the thought of having Bernie back fill her with joy. She doesn’t dare though because there is still that giant voice in the back of her head that warns her that it’s still a month of threats Bernie must face. That until she is back in Serena’s arms no matter how little time is left things could still go wrong.
Maybe it’s also the fact that today is Bernie’s birthday and that she feels so fucking useless. Bernie has made each one of their special occasions while they’ve been apart so bloody amazing, and Serena feels useless. She’s sent Bernie the care package, full of sweets and chocolate and all her favourite savoury snacks but that’s all she’s been able to do. Send Bernie a 2kg shoebox as a birthday gift. And it’s infuriating.
Bernie has done so much for Serena, so much to make sure Serena is cared for, and looked after and so much to make sure she remembers she’s loved but she can’t repay the favour. She can’t buy Bernie a fancy birthday gift, or even just pick up the phone and wish Bernie a Happy Birthday the way Bernie had done on her birthday, just over two months after she’d deployed all that time ago.  But Serena can’t do that all Serena can do is hope that Bernie got her tiny little care package on time and hope that Bernie knows how sincere she is about giving Bernie the best belated, birthday, Christmas and anniversary all rolled into one once she’s home.
She is so so grateful to Bernie for all the open when letters, and the special gifts she’d left her for those special occasions. They’d helped her get through both the best and the worst days of this separation and she’d never have had it any other way, but that doesn’t stop her feeling guilty for not being able to return the favour. She knows Bernie had said that all the blueys Serena has written her have really helped her get through, made her feel special, cared for, loved, and wanted but it’s still not the same. She still can’t give Bernie the same.
She can only hope that once Bernie is home, and she is able to carry out her plan of giving Bernie her special joint celebration gift that she’ll feel a little less guilty. She’s in the middle of the planning for it all. Knows that the two week holiday she plans to take Bernie on will need careful planning, knows they can’t leave too early after Bernie comes home because Bernie will want to get back to her trauma unit at least for a bit, and then to have the two of them out for two weeks not long after that will require the rotas to be carefully planned to ensure both AAU and the trauma unit within it are able to continue running smoothly. She also has a lot of paperwork to finish before she’s able to entrust anyone with it for too long, doesn’t fancy coming back to that in a state of disarray.
She wants to take Bernie away to France, where they can spend their time filled with a mixture of relaxing and a few more adventurous trips that Bernie will just love. She’s not planned the exact details yet, but she knows there will be a trip to the vineyards, a boat trip and even a trip to the mountains on a safari. There will be a few presents too before that, much sooner after Bernie comes home but she’s hoping the holiday will give them that special time to reconnect.
She brings her thoughts back to her lover and her birthday. Wonders if there is anything they can do on base to make her feel a little bit special, whether Bernie would let them even if there is she isn’t sure, she is definitely a lot more reserved than many. Thrives in the army because she earns their respect through her work and not her personality, though Serena wishes Bernie could see herself the way she’s sees her and thinks maybe then she wouldn’t be quite so reserved about who she is. And then she’s thinking about the stupid distance all over again because how much she wouldn’t give to remind Bernie of all those things right here and now with her lover in her arms.
She knows Bernie wouldn’t want her feeling like this no matter what the occasion, so she decides maybe ironically that it’s time for one of Bernie’s letters. That if anything is going to make her feel better right now it’s Bernie’s words, written just for her.
She knows exactly which one she needs, there aren’t exactly many left but somehow one of the ones that is is perfect. “Serena, open when the distance seems too much...” She decides to sit in the garden to open this one, it is one of Bernie’s favourite places in their house after all and it’s a rather warm late March day.
She sits on the bench, the one they enjoy sharing together on a warm summers evening, when Bernie has a whisky, and she has a shiraz, and they can just be totally themselves. She’s glad that it’ll be May when Bernie comes back, as it’s the perfect excuse to do just that.
My Dearest Serena,
I am so sorry the distance feels too much right now. So sorry that I needed to do this and that it meant I had to leave you for nine months. I’m sorry I can’t just be there at your side when you so clearly need it.
I want you to remember though that as long as we’ve got our love, we can get through anything. I’m not sure if we have 8 months or 1 month left apart, or any number in between but know however many it is our love is strong enough to get through this.
I didn’t know what truly loving someone meant until I met you. I am so grateful that the events in our lives led to us meeting, to becoming friends. I truly believe you were put into my life so that I could understand what it meant to truly give my whole self to someone else. You are my heart and soul, and I will never be able to thank you enough for all you have done for me.
Distance is one of the toughest things a relationship can go through, and I don’t know much about what the nine months will have held or will still hold but I do know that our love for each other is so much tougher than the distance between us. I want to take this opportunity to write down a few quotes that I hope will help you get through the rest of our time apart. That you can remind yourself of every time I feel just a little bit too far away.
Distance means so little when someone means so much.
And I know you really do mean so much to me, more than words could ever say and more than you yourself will probably ever know.
Love will travel as far as you let it. It doesn’t have limits.
I didn’t think it was possible to love without limits until I met you but then you changed my whole outlook on the world, and it was like the best breath of fresh air ever.
Can miles truly separate you from a lover… If you want to be with someone you love, aren’t you already there in their heart?
And I can assure you Serena that you are well and truly in my heart every day, as I know I am in yours, you wouldn’t be reading this if I wasn’t.
I exist in two places, here and where you are.
And I do know that while I’m out here doing what I need you are there looking after the trauma unit for me, keeping that very special place open just for me.
And the final one that I want to leave you with is this one. Years from now, our past will be a story – a story of long days and lonely nights, hard work and lack of sleep.   We’ll live each day having intimately known the pain of being apart.   We’ll appreciate our time together, knowing how lucky we are to have made it through and we’ll find solace in the promise of a future together. This is the one I really want you to remember that yes being apart does hurt, we’d be lying if we said it didn’t, it’s hurts because we care, because we love each other in a way we have never loved anyone else. But it also means that in a few short months when we are back together, we’ll know it’s forever that we can truly continue to build our lives together forever.
I miss you; the distance feels overwhelming to me sometimes too and that’s okay. Remember that I love you more than anything.
All My Love Bernie,
Your Big Macho Army Medic x
And just as she thought she does feel better so much better. Can remind herself like Bernie had said that this is only temporary, and super temporary now with only just over a month left to go! That soon enough she will have Bernie back in her arms and will never have to let her go in the same way again. That while there maybe a week or two where they work opposite shifts and hardly see each other that they will never again be separated for nine months. Never again will she have to go so long without the touch of Bernie’s fingers or a kiss from her lips.
She also reminds herself that it’s okay to have moments where she feels sad, where she finds everything too much because that in itself is a sign of how much Bernie means to her, of how much she loves the other woman. That pain and sadness isn’t always only a bad thing even though it’s not a nice thing to feel it shows she cares, and she really does so deeply.
She decides to spend the rest of the day tending the garden, she isn’t anywhere near as green fingered as Bernie, but she can give it a good go. She can tidy up the flower beds and plant the bulbs now the days are getting warmer, and they don’t risk dying from the frosts that seem to have stopped. She can send Bernie a bluey to let her know what she’s done, tell her what she’s planted and confirm if she needs to do anything special to look after them, and at the end of her letter she can promise Bernie that when she gets home the garden will slowly be starting to bloom and they can spend many an evening together just being themselves and finding solace in the promise of their future together.

Just One More, Again | John Soap MacTavish x m!reader
@satan-incarnate-666 asked: “Wait, just one last kiss” soap x m!reader pls pls
summary: it's rare that you and Soap actually get some time to yourselves, but when it does eventually come around, it's safe to say that you and Soap want to make every single second count.
tws: swearing
Gently, Soap ran his hand up and down your arm as he laid behind you on the sofa, your back pressed to his chest as he rested his head on the arm of the sofa making sure not to disturb the soft silver coloured blanket that had been draped over your body and his, the recliners put up so that you could balance biscuits and crisps on them without needing to get up every time you wanted one; you were watching Waterloo Road from the start together, all cuddled up and enjoying his downtime before he had to be sent out on another mission, before you had to leave for another flight with the RAF.
Just enjoying one anothers presence and existence, being together after so long spent apart, making up for all the time that you had already lost but now wanted to get back. Neither of you knew when you would be shipped off again, dreading to hear any phone ring in hopes that you would at least have a week or two together, just something more than twenty four hours; something so stupid and so simple as lying on the sofa, eating biscuits and watching the television, meant so much more now than it had ever done before. Just to be in each other's company meant so much more to you both than either of you could ever say; it all meant everything to you both.
All you both wanted was exactly that, no pressure to be someone else, no need for big and expensive and fancy outings; just to be with one another, to exist and to actually be able to spend some fucking time with each other, as boyfriends. Not as a pilot and a soldier, not as a member of the RAF and a task force. As boyfriends, as a couple.
He paused the television, pulled himself back a little so that he could pull you under him, resting with his body on yours as he put one hand at the side of your neck, the other propping himself up as he pressed it into the soft cushions, a smile on his lips. "Give us a kiss."
You smiled, putting one hand on his chest and the other at the back of his neck as you stared up into his eyes; they were captivating from that angle, you couldn't help but to get a little bit lost in them as you chewed at the inside of your lip. "Is that your way of asking nicely, Johnny?"
"Aye, it is," he admitted before closing the distance, meeting you halfway when you leaned up to kiss him.
It was so gentle, so soft and so tender, not like the usual hungry and desperate kisses that you often shared, and although you couldn't help but to smile into it as you melted against him; your breaths mingling and mixing when it turned open mouthed, but Soap didn't go down the usual road that he did. He didn't bite at your bottom lip, he didn't bring his hand to your throat or make you shudder and whimper. He was gentle. He was soft. He was tender. Like he was reminding you that he wasn't about to go anywhere and that he wasn't going to leave you any time soon, and wished that you would do the same.
He pulled away when he felt his chest getting tight, needing air, and he took a moment to admire you; so close and actually right there. Not on a screen, or in a photograph. Right there, with him.
"I love you," Soap whispered, gently tracing your jaw. "Y'know that, don't you?"
You nodded, leaning into his touch as you let out a soft breath. "Yeah, I know... I love you, too, Johnny... I'm sorry I can't get as much time off of work as I used to."
But he shook his head slowly, leaning down to quickly kiss you once again, hardly able to keep himself away from you for more than a single moment at a time. "No need to be sorry, (y/n), you cannae control it... am sorry, in all. A should be a better boyfriend."
You swallowed, daring to let your gaze go to his lips for a moment; swollen and plump, wet and so fucking kissable. "Soap, you're the best that I could ask for... besides, even if you were fucking shit, I'd still want you - who else is gonna watch Waterloo Road all day with me, eh?"
He grinned at that, daring to steal another kiss as he kept himself so fucking close, not wanting to even think about being away from you anymore. "That is true, I dinnae anyone who would watch this shite except us."
"And there you have it," you joked. "I love you, Johnny, I really do... but I do wish that we could be together more."
Soap nodded, shuffling and fidgeting around for a moment so that he could rest with his face pressed against the side of your neck, daring to softly kiss at the skin as he smiled; he couldn't deny it, he loved that every time he gave you neck kisses, you would become absolute putty in his hands. "I think we both wish we had more time together, don't we?"
"Yeah," you murmured. "Yeah, we do, but... fuck, we gotta make the most of what we got right now, don't we?"
"Oh, aye," he agreed with a soft chuckle. "How far in this are we, now?"
You used the television remote to check where you were in the serious. "Series one, episode seven - still got quite a while to go."
"Tell ye what," Soap started, "y'know what I really fancy right now?"
"What?"
"A nice cheese toastie," he grumbled. "With fuckin' jam in the middle."
Your stomach rumbled as you nodded in agreement. "Want me to go make it?"
"Yeah, please," Soap murmured. "But, do us a favour?"
"What?" You nearly grinned.
"Kiss me again."
You couldn't deny such a request, moving him beneath you as you leaned down and captured his lips with yours; smiling and laughing into it when he traced his fingers along your skin, making sure to pay extra attention to the spots that made you shiver and giddy. But then you pulled back, gently tracing his bottom lip with your thumb as you chuckled softly.
"Right, cheese toasties," you told him with a slight bubbling laugh in your voice. "Anything else?"
"Wait, wait, wait," Soap refused to let you move. "Wait, just one last kiss?"
"I'm going into the kitchen," you pointed out with a chuckle. "Not fucking Australia."
"Still," he shrugged. "One kiss for the road?"
"Alright, go on, then."

"heyyy how are you? do want to have dinner tonight? i-i'll cook"
"heyy uhmm the bill that night was a little bit high for my budget. is it okay if you pay for the half?"
"was it because i only lasted for 1 minute?………….. nah you said you had a great time. okay. call me."

Now watching Always Forever, which is the ep where Morven leaves with Cameron and it’s supposed to be her happy ending. Lmaooo.
Edit: SCREAM at the very start of the episode having a scene that cuts directly from Cameron to Gaskell. In hindsight that’s so funny.
Edit 2: Sacha to Jac, about John: “He saved your life, and for that I am eternally grateful. Because I don’t know what I would’ve done if we’d lost you as well.” :((
Also, no one would ever have thought when this ep first aired that Ken the drunk elf would be in the very last episode of the show. Wild.
Edit 3: Okay, turns out Cameron was always not only bland (which I remembered), but also always entitled and annoying. But at least he was an entitled, bland, annoying side character instead of the main villain of the show for 2 years.
Edit 4: The scene with Jac and Essie talking about Raf is beautiful.
Also, lol @ this from Essie: “You had a lot of people worried about you - Hanssen, Gaskell, Sacha...” One of these things is not like the others!
Edit 5: Immortal words from Morven: “Get over yourself, Cam.”
Also I miss Holby going batshit insane at Christmas actually, shame they didn’t do it in the last series.
Edit 6: OH FUCK JASON THE CARICATURE IS HERE. So glad we never have to see him again.
Edit 7:
Me: *calls Jason a caricature*
My mom (also autistic, for context), 5 seconds later, after Jason broke Essie’s phone and they were talking about not being able to get Raf’s voicemail: *starts going on about how that’s not how it works*
Jason: Voicemails are saved on the server! You’ll be able to get it back!
My mom: Exactly!!
Me: ...Maybe he’s not as much of a caricature as I thought.
Edit 8:
GhostArthur is here!!
Also, eternally obsessed with this:
Ken: What’s it like, taking a bullet?
Jac: Fetch me a gun and I’ll show you.
Edit 9:
GhostArthur on Cameron: “So that’s my replacement? He’s handsome in an obvious kind of way.”
Edit 10:
SCREAM @ Sacha asking Cameron of all people to watch over Morven and make sure she’s fit to treat patients.
Edit 11: Jac doing the Henrik style fidgeting with her hands!
Interesting little piece of dialogue from Cam on Bernie: “My mother could never lay down roots for long.”
Edit 12: There’s a few pretty decent Jac and Fletch scenes here. If they hadn’t over-pushed the romance angle and hadn’t had him be such a dick to her so often, they could’ve had a cute little friendship.
Edit 13: Interesting dialogue from John, considering his backstory (which hadn’t been revealed when I last watched this episode - yes, I haven’t seen it since it aired!). “Pain is a useful tool in our arsenal. It’s corrective. An important survival trait.”
Edit 14:
Morven to Jac: “You’ve been here forever. Made your career here.” :(
Edit 15: “Auntie Serena said I don’t have a neurotypical response to grief!” Well, you probably don’t, Jason. However, “Auntie Serena” was still talking out her ass by thinking she could tell you about YOUR experience with the disorder you have and she doesn’t.
I do love Jason being a Doctor Who fan though (his social script of offering Essie a jellybaby obviously being taken from the Fourth Doctor). Now THAT’S an accurate autism thing (unironically. I don’t know why so many autistic people are into Doctor Who but we just are.). I wonder if he and Henrik have ever chatted about it. Possibly even if he got Henrik into it. Look, I just find the idea of Henrik discovering the 1990s Doctor Who movie and realising he really fancies the Eighth Doctor but having no idea why to be hilarious.
Edit 16: HENRIK AND MORVEN SCENE HERE WE GO
Edit 17: “You’d think I’d be used to it by now, wouldn’t you? All this death.” :( Henrik definitely felt that.
Also, Henrik’s whole “bird in a cage so expansive it’s under the illusion it is free” metaphor comes across more like it’s about his own feelings on the CEO job and how he tried to convince himself it was right for him than about Morven’s feelings about her job at Holby.
Also also, the little moment where Morven tells Henrik Arthur was lucky to have him in his life and Henrik’s EXPRESSION I just. Aaaaah.
Edit 18: This little Morven and Nicky scene is lovely.
Edit 19: Henrik clicking a pen over and over. Can’t tell if it’s stimming or a compulsion.
Edit 20: The Jeremy Warren plotline was sooo pointless. His little scene in this ep only happened to give the episode a cliffhanger.
Edit 21: Seeing Nicky talk about Cameron’s thing for Morven is SO WEIRD.
Edit 22: Jac getting Ken to dress up as Santa for Emma. And her reading The Night Before Christmas. Awww. :’))
Anyway, can you IMAGINE society if this had been the last time we ever saw Cameron??

Exclusive: the ‘profoundly powerful’ moments that shaped Duchess of Cambridge’s children’s charity work by Camilla Tominey
It all started with secret visits the public never got to see. Newly married, and with the world’s press chronicling her every move – down to the details of her designer dresses – the Duchess of Cambridge resolved to go "below radar".
Acting as Prince William’s "plus one", rather than a fully fledged solo royal in those early days, the newest addition to the Royal family knew that she wanted to find a cause she could champion as impactfully as Diana, the Princess of Wales’s landmine campaign; it was simply a question of where to find it.
Having already announced her first patronage of Action on Addiction, a charity working with people with drug and alcohol problems, Hope House, a women-only rehabilitation centre in Clapham, south London, seemed as good a place as any to start.
It was October 2011 when the then 29-year-old Duchess paid the first of several, incognito visits in a bid to find out what had sent its clients on a downward spiral of self-destruction.
According to Rebecca Priestley, who accompanied the Duchess on the visit and would go on to spend five years as her private secretary, it played a pivotal role in her decision to put childhood at the heart of her philanthropic endeavours.
Speaking on the record for the first time, Mrs Priestley, who is now an executive coach, recalled:  "I remember going up to Anglesey, where they were living after the wedding, to have a conversation with the Duchess about her royal life."
At that point, she had the philanthropic world at her feet. She could have done anything she wanted in the charitable arena. Typically, she had put a lot of thought into it already. Addiction was an issue she was instinctively thinking about – but she was also genuinely interested in understanding what support was there and what role that played in the bigger picture of mainstream societal issues."
With the Duke having flown to the Falklands for a six–week tour of duty with his RAF search and rescue squadron, Mrs Priestley put a programme together to support the Duchess’s desire to "listen and learn"."A lot of it was behind the scenes, just talking to people and hearing where it was that they needed more help.  The one thing that united all of the women at Hope House was that the derailing had started so early on. They could trace the problems in their adult lives back to childhood."
A subsequent private visit in February 2012 to Clouds House, a treatment centre in East Knoyle in Wiltshire, served as further confirmation that the early years should be a key area of focus. But it was during a later meeting with female inmates at a detox unit at Send Prison in Woking when the penny well and truly dropped.
"It was a profoundly powerful moment,” recalled Mrs Priestley. "You go in there with this preconceived idea that these women have done things wrong, that it was their fault. Then one woman started speaking to the Duchess about her earliest memories of seeing needles on the floor of her home."
She had always thought addiction was a misunderstood issue, but after this, she became concerned that there was a pre-destiny about those affected – an inevitability about it. These women were born into it and there was very little chance of escape."
The experience set in train a sequence of events that will next week culminate in the Duchess, 39, stepping up her ambition in driving awareness and action on the impact that early childhood can have on society at large.
She will launch a new initiative through the couple’s Royal Foundation to further explore the science around early childhood, raise awareness of the issue and foster collaboration and partnerships across relevant groups.
According to Lord Hague, who became chairman of the Royal Foundation last September, the "ambitious" new project will be equal in stature to William’s £50 million Earthshot Prize, launched last year with Sir David Attenborough to find workable solutions to climate change and environmental problems.
"The Duchess truly believes this is one of the great issues of our time," said the former Tory leader. "This is the central plank of her work in the way conservation issues are for the Duke. It’s a hugely significant moment."
While politicians are often in a rush to make a difference during the comparatively short time they have in office, royals are there for life, which perhaps explains why Kate has taken 10 years to get to this point.Having been instrumental in launching the Heads Together campaign with William and Prince Harry in 2016, designed at tackling the stigma and changing the conversation on mental health, it was not until 2018 that she convened a steering group of experts to look at how cross-sector collaboration could bring about lasting change.
In January, she delivered a landmark speech after her Five Big Questions on the Under Fives survey garnered over 500,000 responses.
"People often ask why I care so passionately about the early years," the mother-of-three said.
"Many mistakenly believe that my interest stems from having children of my own. While of course I care hugely about their start in life, this ultimately sells the issue short. If we only expect people to take an interest in the early years when they have children, we are not only too late for them, we are underestimating the huge role others can play in shaping our most formative years, too."
Pointing out that the social cost of late intervention has been estimated to be over £17 billion a year, she added: "The early years are therefore not simply just about how we raise our children. They are in fact about how we raise the next generation of adults. They are about the society we will become."
According to Eamon McCrory, Professor of Developmental Neuroscience and Psychopathology at University College London, the Duchess "has a vision of how she can help transform how we as a society view and invest in the early years for the benefit of society".
Describing her interest in "the role the brain shapes our early experiences and how that sets us on a path to adult life", he explained: "When you look at very young babies and infants, on the surface they don’t appear to be engaging in complex emotions so there's a tendency to underestimate the millions of synapses that are being formed every minute. But science is telling us we have to look under the bonnet.
"There’s no question that for the Duchess, this is a lifetime piece of work. The last five years laid the foundations, now we are entering a more proactive phase.” Described by one source as “thoughtful, professional and determined to do a good job,” there is a sense that Kate has never been in it for the early wins, but the long haul.
As one well-placed insider put it: "She took the job very seriously right from the very beginning. She continues to want to get it right and do her very best - for the institution, for William and the importance of the work she’s doing.
"She doesn't just want to rock up for a picture opportunity, which is why she used to get quite frustrated with all the early focus on what she was wearing. She really cares about this stuff."
Another source said she was "much more fun" than people give her credit for, pointing out how she has grown in confidence having found a cause that she is not only passionate about - but also well informed.
As Lord Hague put it: "She’s been reading the books and had trustees reading the books. People assume her interest in the early years is because she has children – actually it comes from all the adults she’s met." The other key influence has been Kate’s own idyllic childhood.
Brought up in leafy Bucklebury in West Berkshire by her entrepreneur parents Michael and Carole Middleton, pictured below with the royal family, the Duchess has never made any secret of how fortunate she has been to be brought up in a loving and supportive family.
"She always recognised that she benefited from such a great start in life," added Mrs Priestley.
"That’s why sport and the outdoors has always been a key theme for her. She was always asking how those sorts of experiences could be made accessible to others."
For Dame Benny Refson, president of the children’s mental health charity Place2Be, where the Duchess has been patron since 2013, Kate’s grounded upbringing has proved an asset.
“The Duchess listens and people feel heard and valued. It’s nothing to do with privilege. The groups she meets in challenging areas in London don't look at what she's wearing. What makes a difference is that an important person has shown a genuine interest in them. She can relate without passing judgement, which is so important."
Having started out as a reticent public speaker, the Duchess has finally found her voice – and next week she will have a lot more to say.
