Anemonoides nemorosa (wood anemone)
Although there are native species of wood anemone in eastern North America, the wood anemones growing in the front garden are the European species,  Anemonoides nemorosa. This species can be grown from seed but it usually takes four years to produce it’s first flower. Most people obtain a chunk of its rhizome root and that presents a problem.
We planted ours years ago and it has more or less taken over one of the garden beds. This year I decided to put some other plants in but as I started to find a place in the anemone bed I discovered a dense mass of rhizomes growing in clay soil. I’ve been top-dressing the anemone with compost because this replicates its native habitat where it grows under trees and is fertilized by the annual leaf fall. In the end I dug a space with a spade and planted a bunch of spring bulbs. This is a problem with any plant that spreads through rhizomes and, believe me, I have learned my lesson. I haven’t ‘purged’ my garden of the wood anemone but it now has a specific place to grow and I won’t let it take over the flower bed again.

You know it’s my time of year when the rue anemones and the wood anemones hold up their beauty for the world (well they mean it for insects) to see! It’s official: I made it to another spring!

A few mementos from a short hike on the Virgin Hemlock Tail this morning. Cold, damp weather has settled into NC West Virginia, but any rain is welcome following an unusually dry winter and spring (opposite of the West Coast). From top: the ever balletic but stinky red trillium (Trillium erectum); long-spurred violet (Viola rostrata); wood anemone (Anemone quinquefolia), longing for a burst of sun to open its flowers; trailing arbutus (Epigaea repens), a ground-hugging shrub in the heath family; early meadow-rue (Thalictrum dioicum); and an Eastern red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus), a terrestrial salamander of rich, damp mountain woods.
