People talk about this or that era having "a feeling." Know what era seemed like a blob of time for me? The 90s did.

Especially in the Bay Area.

There were some weird memes that took over the social world. For example, if you were in liberal culture then you might have run into the culture of SF 90s "sex hipsters." There was a whole subculture around heterosexual people being involved in sex education activism and going to events like Wordfuck (a thing they held at Cafe du Nord in the late 90s) and giving out Kinsey-like sexual history and fantasy screeners on the first date. (This is something that probably came about because of meme-combining between kink culture and the 80s sex panic.)

Also we need to acknowledge that there *was* a fad of hip liberal heterosexual people, especially women, calling themselves bisexual. At a time when there wasn't much discussion of what this might mean besides "I don't hate other women" and "I think some women are aesthetically appealing."

There was a gentrification dynamic in this culture, too.

In many cases, it definitely represented a new, more economically privileged heterosexual 20something movement into hip queer spaces and deradicalized counterculture spaces just as some of those same hip queer people and ex-counterculture people (often actual ex-hippie) were leaving for the Pacific Northwest.
