Thinking about ghouls as farmers/farmhands
I imagine that some types of kagune would be excellent for harvesting/ploughing with a nice bonus of no carbon emissions. I imagine ghouls, after criminalisation, would possibly even revolutionise farming/carbon footprint from farming?
(Although of course ideally a farm wouldnt till but even then for harvesting ghouls would be quite efficient.)
GHOULS IN FARMING AND FOOD PRODUCTION IS SO INTERESTING
Ghouls have always been a part of society, and regardless of where they are or how accepted they are, they’ve always had some hand in farming since, especially before industrialization, it was a good field for them. Their strength, senses, and kagune make them fantastic at cultivating, protecting, and harvesting food
In old world cultures where ghouls were always ostracized, they couldn’t be open about why their crops grew so well, so they tended to make up myths and stories about some ritual or another that makes their harvests so bountiful. They had senses of smell and pressure detection that could help them sniff out blights and pests, as well as semi-accurately predict rainfall, letting them handle issues before they got too bad. That, and their strength that lets them handle the physical task of planting and harvesting, helped them produce a lot of plants. But telling humans how they did it is off the table, so it was common for them to have a plowing Ox just for show and to say they said some prayer that helped
A lot of why ghouls thrived in farming is due to their regeneration. It may not be talked about much anymore, but it is DANGEROUS. Not just the modern machinery, but the strain of lifting and carrying. The illnesses carried by plants and animals. The workhorses and oxen that can just fucking kick you to death. The PIGS. It’s all risky work, and back before antibiotics, just one cut and you’re done for. A person who can not only survive almost any cut, but take a donkey kick to the face and get right back up to finish plowing the field is one of the most valuable people any farming village can have
Farming animals is more hit or Miss, because a lot of prey animals panic when they smell ghoul. Some ghouls still kept them and after enough time, or enough animals born around the smell of them, they could get used to it. Historically ghouls have run a lot of butcher shops because it was one of the best places to hide human meat before dna testing became widely available, so some animal husbandry skill was a good thing
Ghouls tended to make good shepherds. In especially rural areas, a lot of humans would collectively decide not to talk about the fact that someone is obviously a monster because they’re simply so fast and strong and don’t let sheep and cattle go missing or get hunted. If you were in Cold Ass Nowhere Ireland in 1635 and you had a shepherd who not only never loses a sheep but also eats the English, you’d pretend you didn’t notice either
In areas and cultures where ghouls were more accepted, they were essential to hunting and farming. North and central american ghouls had traits designed for taking down megafauna to supplement their diets, and their human companions could depend on them to bring countless Buffalo and deer home. Jungle subspecies had traits built for climbing, and were central to the harvest of high growing fruits and beans. A now likely extinct species native to Canada had semi aquatic adaptations and a thick layer of fat who were designed to hunt seals and small whales, and shaped the way any community lucky enough to have some survived. In places where ghouls were welcomed, they were so efficient at harvesting and hunting that land rarely needed to be developed for monocultures at all
When ghouls are decriminalized in more parts of the world, their physical abilities are allowed to shine again. Stories of ghoul farmers through history arise. Plenty of American and Polynesian communities (who had been telling people about ghoul’s contributions to their land and cultures for years and were having that brushed off as myth) can legally reintroduce the old practices of ghoul hunting and harvesting techniques. Smaller farms hire more ghouls once it’s clear that they can do machine level work without the expense of maintaining machines, and it’s one of the biggest ghoul hiring fields at the start of their legalization
Naturally, ghoul farming unions are quick to form. They can do machine level work, but are not going to risk being treated like machines for it. As with any Union there’s some backlash, but when it becomes apparent just how much better ghouls are at crop maintenance and harvesting, demands are met. It’s become a well paying profession, and has been good work for ghouls that struggle with the human grade education they were denied when they were younger, or ghouls who simply prefer to work outside doing something that benefits people

A new way to make an important ingredient for plastics, adhesives, carpet fibers, household cleaners and more from natural gas could reduce manufacturing costs in a post-petroleum economy by millions of dollars, thanks to a new chemical reactor designed by University of Michigan engineers. The reactor creates propylene, a workhorse chemical that is also used to make a long list of industrial chemicals, including ingredients for nitrile rubber found in automotive hoses and seals as well as blue protective gloves. Most propylene used today comes from oil refineries, which collect it as a byproduct of refining crude oil into gasoline. As oil and gasoline fall out of vogue in favor of natural gas, solar, and wind energy, production of propylene and other oil-derived products could fall below the current demand without new ways to make them.

I'm not trying to justify Duncan's worst moments, but it has to be said that the transition he made from being an industrial engine to one working on a public railway must have been hard. Engine behaviorists will attest that such a role swap hardly ever goes without a hitch. (Passenger tanks going into industry, by contrast, are more often disasters than not.) So yes, he definitely went too far holding his passengers hostage on a bridge, but I still feel for him somewhat. Adjusting to alien concepts like decorum around passengers, timetables, and the myriad of coach etiquette do's and don'ts would have been a headspin for even the most polite workhorse industrial, and it's a shame Duncan wasn't able to get help without his infamous outbursts. But then again, maybe the factory he came from was so tough-as-nails that brute force was legitimately all he knew at the time?
Duncan's TV portrayal, (the model series one anyhow,) isn't out of scale: He's actually built with a much heftier, heartier boiler than that on the Talyllyn Railway's Douglas. And yes, Duncan is yellow rather than red.
Speaking of Douglas, he and Duncan are actually polar opposites in terms of personality. Duncan is brash, stubborn, and has a hair-trigger temper, whereas Douglas is almost pitifully meek, hardly speaks above a whisper, and says "sorry" in every other sentence. Duncan can't stand such sniveling in anybody, least of all engines he's meant to be showcased with. That happened only once. The only reason Douglas didn't cry is because he was afraid Duncan would lace into him even more than he had.
Dolgoch instantaneously dislikes Duncan. She, (Dolgoch "the Old Lady" is female, alert the press,) doesn't hold with shirkers or anyone rocking the ship on the Talyllyn, period. When she found out how much grief he had given Douglas, Dolgoch gave Duncan a tongue-lashing of biblical proportions. He didn't speak for two days. And as you can imagine, it's not true he visited the Talyllyn multiple times; that was the only time he's been there, and he's not willing to risk life and frames by returning.
The very utterance of Dolgoch's name will bring Duncan's boiler pressure down 30psi.
Duncan has always been yellow with black stripes, and he's always been called Duncan. When he first arrived, his name was stenciled on his boiler. Attempts to rename him like Sir Handel and Peter Sam had been failed MISERABLY, and some nameplates were hurriedly cast.

Orbital Sciences X-42 Pop-Up Upper Stage or Upper Stage Flight Experiment (USFE)
Tumblr media
"In the 1996/1997 time frame, the U.S. Air Force began to define plans for building blocks of a future Military Spaceplane (MSP) system. The full scope of these plans came to public attention in January 1998, when the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Directorate (VS) requested proposals from the industry to study various aspects of advanced military space technology. This included research related to a potential MSP system. The latter was to cover concepts for RLVs (Reusable Launch Vehicles), SMVs (Space Manoeuver Vehicles, see X-37/X-40), so-called CAVs (Common Aero Vehicles, see X-41/Falcon) and finally pop-up upper stages. Pop-up upper stages were defined as rocket stages, which could be used by RLVs or ELVs (Expendable Launch Vehicles) to boost payloads to their final orbits and/or to perform orbital manoeuvers.
Tumblr media
Earlier, in 1997, the AFRL had already begun a formal program to develop a pop-up upper-stage, named the Modular Insertion Stage (MIS). The MIS was defined as an expendable, low-cost, liquid-fueled upper stage, which could be scaled by using one to three rocket engines (hence the 'modular' label) to suit all expected user needs. It had already been determined in AFRL-sponsored studies in 1997 by TRW and Rocketdyne, that the best-suited propellants for the requirements (storable, non-toxic fuels) would be hydrogen peroxide and kerosene. Subsequently, AFRL cooperated with NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in funding and management of further development of the MIS. MSFC had its 'Bantam' low cost lift program running since 1997, and this provided a suitable contractual framework for the MIS effort. It was decided to build an MIS flight demonstrator, called Upper Stage Flight Experiment (USFE), and Orbital Sciences Corp. (OSC) was eventually awarded a contract to design and build the USFE. At some time in late 1997 or early 1998, the designation X-42A was officially allocated to an expendable demonstrator for pop-up upper-stage technology. However, this designation has so far not been further used in any official announcements, and therefore it is unclear if it will be actually applied to the USFE project (in fact, that doesn't appear too likely; see RLV section below).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Construction and component testing of the USFE prototype proceeded through mid-2003 on a relatively low-key basis. However, in that year a tank failure during a helium pressurization test completely destroyed the engine. Since then, a second prototype has been built, but propellant tank leakage problems have again delayed the program. If tests with a new tank, scheduled for early 2006, are successful, the USFE could be ready for a flight demonstration by May 2007. For this test, the USFE would be fitted as the third stage on top of a two-stage booster provided by OSC (most likely the first two stages of a retired Minuteman missile).
X-42 RLV Demonstrator
The X-42 designator has also been unofficially used by the AFRL and the industry in 2002 for a possible RLV demonstrator. Orbital Sciences Corp. (OSC) has presented a design, which is based on its Multi-Role Reusable Vehicle (MRRV) concept, a winged vehicle powered by a single RS-27 rocket engine. The significance of the use of 'X-42' for this proposal is not quite clear, but it appears to emphasize that the vehicle could be a reusable solution to the upper stage requirement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OSC X-42 RLV Demonstrator
By 2003, this design had slightly evolved, featuring a single vertical tail on the fuselage instead of the wingtip fins. A single CAV (Common Aero Vehicle) could be carried atop the fuselage and launched in space. OSC's X-42 was equipped with a conventional tricycle landing gear and a braking parachute in the aft fuselage. The vehicle was designed for versatile trajectories and short turn-around time on the ground (14 days), making it a true 'space launch workhorse'.
Tumblr media
The X-42 label has also been informally used in a few papers and presentations to refer to other proposed test vehicles related to RLV and TSTO (Two Stage To Orbit) technology. The acronym RAST (Reusable Access to Space Technology) has also been mentioned together with X-42. All said, it looks as if the X-42 designation is currently not tied to a specific program or vehicle."

What the heck's the deal with tower 6 on the Big Red Express (1997–2022) at Whistler-Blackcomb?
So, on Whistler Mountain, there was this one chairlift, the Big Red Express (due to be replaced in time for the 2022–2023 ski season with a new lift by the same name), which was notable for, mostly, being remarkably miserable to ride on snowy, windy days; being ten minutes long; and:
Tumblr media
This is a rare design feature on ropeways, which only really happens when there's a serious elevation differential across the several metres separating each side of the ropeway. Usually, they'll just build a tower tall enough to support both sides of the cable, unless it's way cheaper to not do that. Which, well, it is here.
But there's another thing that's weird about that tower. Like, here, let me show you a basically identical lift built by the same company, Doppelmayr, around the same year:
Tumblr media
Check the tower heads on both — the ones on the second picture are normal for that manufacturer in that era. So where did the Big Red get its weird towers from?
Tumblr media
The Redline Express, installed in 1992. I'll get into why it only lasted five ski seasons in a bit, but basically, they ended up having to put that little side tower in because that lift was itself replacing the original Red Chair (1965–1992). Which was built, well, very differently from the big, beefy high-speed lifts that started to become the main workhorses of large ski resorts in the '80s, and which also had chairs that didn't require quite the same vertical clearance or other such space:
Tumblr media
So, reusing the same alignment, which was the most direct route from "the top of whatever lift comes up from the base at Creekside" to "up a hill from the main lodge on the mountain, so that people can ski down to the ski racks", but with chairs that need way more vertical clearance and can support larger gaps between towers, meant sticking in a little side tower to make sure people's skis wouldn't brush against the snow (or worse!). Speaking of "worse", though, let's get into why the Redline was replaced maybe a sixth of the way into its theoretical service life:
Tumblr media
Think about how it works in practice. For clarity, this is a device intended to secure hundreds of kilograms of metal and passengers to a rope, usually in temperatures below freezing, under conditions where forces on the cable, such as those that occur in the event of an emergency stop, can result in reduced or absent gravitational force acting on the chair.
And for more clarity, look at the upper part of the "jaws" on the cable, and where the hinges are relative to the "jaws". Just one more thing: those tension-providing devices aren't lazily drawn metal springs; they're rubber "marshmallow" springs.
Can you see where the problem might be with this setup? Because this guy didn't:
Tumblr media
Meet Janek Kunczynski, the founder of Lift Engineering & Manufacturing Co., AKA Yan, who might as well be the Elon Musk of ropeways. Before I get deeper into just how disastrous his detachable grip design was, let me show you another Incredible™ (derogatory) example of his engineering sensibilities:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Allow me to remind you that this is usually operating in sub-zero temperatures, and that this specific lift was often subject to considerable wind and snow. As in, when mechanics were working on this chairlift, they'd have to do that with no protection from the elements. (It's also at least rumoured within the ropeway and ski resort industries that his lifts were routinely welded together in ski resort parking lots.) His whole thing was, basically, making lifts look cool and implementing them cheaply, to undercut his European competitors, which led not just to impractical designs that were hostile to the people maintaining them or prone to breaking down, but to his company's lifts killing at least five people and injuring at least seventy.
Which brings us back to Whistler:
Tumblr media
Whistler, at the time in an arms race to outcompete Blackcomb, its neighbour, but lacking the sort of venture capital backing Blackcomb had, wanted to put in some high-speed lifts to be able to match the skiing experience at Blackcomb, which had already bought several such lifts from Doppelmayr (after buying several low-speed lifts from Yan). So they figured they'd take the cheap route, and get three high-speed lifts, of a fairly unproven design, installed. These were to replace three ancient lifts that were, at that point, constraining the resort's capacity.
While the Redline and Green both served through their five years of operation without any serious issues, the same can't be said for the Quicksilver Express, which was the only chairlift Yan ever built with "bubbles" on it — which required a slightly enhanced grip, to handle the additional weight.
It wasn't enhanced enough, though. On December 23rd, 1995…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Quicksilver, specifically, was an unmitigated dumpster fire, even before any accidents happened. It was designed such that, in wind, grips could smack against towers, taking on damage in the process. It had a faulty brake system that would apply maximum braking force via the emergency brake when a normal stop is what the operator pressed the button for. At least a few empty chairs had straight up fallen off the cable before the accident. And then there were the grips.
These grips received multiple retrofits and rebuilds throughout the few years the lift was operating, which never seemed to help — they slipped so often that operators on the lift just stuffed paper into the grip force alarm to muffle it. The clearance between grips and towers was known to be below code, and Whistler stated that they simply couldn't fix it. Upon testing the grips after the accident, of 29 tested, every single one failed to perform adequately.
Furthermore, there was the whole thing with the rubber and the claws. Rubber springs lose performance at much less extreme temperatures than metal springs, and the way the grips were designed, a lot of their grip force relied on the chair applying force via gravity. Take away gravity, and the grip can slip. Take away gravity on a particularly steep section of the lift line, and you've got a cascade of chairs knocking each other off of the cable until they ram into a tower and fall to the ground.
So it was 1997, and Whistler, on the edge of going bankrupt from lawsuits and lost business, had to get rid of the other Yan high speed lifts, which were likely safer, but not safe enough. Some resorts retrofitted theirs to use a better grip design, but Whistler just got rid of them…
Tumblr media
…other than the towers.

From Coding to Creation: Java's Versatile Influence
Java, often described as the "king of programming languages," stands as a monumental force that has significantly influenced the trajectory of modern software development. For over two decades, Java has proven its versatile, powerful, and dependable programming language, underpinning a vast array of applications, platforms, and systems that permeate our digital landscape. In this comprehensive exploration, we will embark on a journey to unravel the essence of Java, delving deep into what makes it indispensable and why it continues to be the preferred choice for programmers across diverse domains.
Tumblr media
What is Java?
At its core, Java is a high-level, object-oriented, and platform-independent programming language that defies the conventional limitations of traditional coding. Conceived in the mid-1990s through the visionary efforts of James Gosling and his adept team at Sun Microsystems (now seamlessly integrated into Oracle Corporation), Java introduced a revolutionary concept that continues to define its identity: "Write Once, Run Anywhere." This groundbreaking principle signifies that Java applications exhibit a remarkable adaptability, capable of executing seamlessly on various platforms, provided a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) stands ready to facilitate their execution. This single feature alone positions Java as an unparalleled workhorse, transcending the boundaries of operating systems and hardware, and ushering in an era of software portability and compatibility.
Key Features of Java:
Platform Independence: Java's unparalleled platform independence is the cornerstone of its success. Code authored in Java is liberated from the confines of a single operating system, enabling it to traverse across a plethora of platforms without requiring any cumbersome modifications. This inherent portability not only obliterates compatibility concerns but also streamlines software deployment, eliminating the need for platform-specific versions.
Object-Oriented Paradigm: Java's steadfast adherence to the object-oriented programming (OOP) paradigm cultivates a development environment characterized by modularity and maintainability. By encapsulating code into discrete objects, Java empowers developers to construct intricate systems with greater efficiency and ease of management, a quality particularly favored in large-scale projects.
Rich Standard Library: The Java Standard Library stands as a testament to the language's comprehensiveness. It comprises a vast repository of pre-built classes and methods that cater to a wide spectrum of programming tasks. This comprehensive library significantly reduces development overhead by offering readily available tools for commonplace operations, bestowing developers with the invaluable gift of time.
Security: In an era marred by cyber threats and vulnerabilities, Java emerges as a paragon of security-conscious design. It incorporates robust security features, including a sandbox environment for executing untrusted code. Consequently, Java has become the de facto choice for building secure applications, particularly in industries where data integrity and user privacy are paramount.
Community Support: The strength of Java's thriving developer community is an asset of immeasurable value. This vast and active network ensures that developers are never left wanting for resources, libraries, or frameworks. It provides a dynamic support system where knowledge sharing and collaborative problem-solving flourish, accelerating project development and troubleshooting.
Scalability: Java is not confined by the scale of a project. It gracefully adapts to the demands of both modest applications and sprawling enterprise-level systems. Its versatility ensures that as your project grows, Java will remain a steadfast companion, capable of meeting your evolving requirements.
Performance: Java's Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler serves as the vanguard of its performance capabilities. By dynamically optimizing code execution, Java ensures that applications not only run efficiently but also deliver exceptional user experiences. This, coupled with the ability to harness the power of modern hardware, makes Java a preferred choice for performance-critical applications.
Multithreading: Java's built-in support for multithreading equips applications to execute multiple tasks concurrently. This not only enhances responsiveness but also elevates the overall performance of applications, particularly those designed for tasks that demand parallel processing.

The fact that you don't realize how good of a performer JD McDonagh is and you think that Dom "deserves better" than being on a team with him - as though JD is a downgrade from anyone else he could be on a team with - is really your loss. But okay, sure, tell me you don't understand how the industry works without telling me you don't understand how the industry works.
okay so. i think that JD in ring, as a seller, and as a performer is great. i think that he is very talented and no one saying that he’s not.
however, that does not mean that i like him in kayfabe. i don’t like him with the judgement day and i don’t really like his character (again, nothing against him as a person irl.)
i also think that yes, dom deserves better than being treated like he can’t hold his own as a singles competitor anymore. he spent the last year working himself up and being the workhorse that he was to… what? it’s like they’ve completely forgotten about him.
and trust me, i know how the industry works. i know that it’s for this reason and that, but that doesn’t mean that i’m not still upset about it or that i can’t simply have a different opinion than you. dom is my favorite male wrestler, so of course i’m going to be upset about how i feel like he is not being given what he has deserved and worked for.

ID: Digital drawing of a silver slimegirl with curly slime-hair. In the first two panels she is androgynous. In the first she is wearing a labcoat and stands in front of big industrial buildings and offices. In the second she is wearing a space suit and is holding her helmet, standing in front of a painting of four blue gas giant planets. In the third she looks more feminine and wears a black and yellow starfleet uniform. End ID.
Drawing of @something-boring  (Jenny)’s original character.
Visca Limax is a Mellanoid Slime who was a veteran of the space program. By the early 25th century, the Mellanoid Space Program was finally beginning to peter out after several successful and several near-disastrous low-tech missions, and public support to integrate the space program into Federation Starfleet had finally begun to creep up. Visca quit the space program and enlisted in starfleet and transed her gender.
Bio, from Discord, below the cut.
Name: Visca Limax Age: 50 (in 2415) Species: Mellanoid Slime Academy Graduation: N/A (enlisted 2409, familiarization training completed 2410) Assignment: USS Hypatia Gamma Shift rotation Division: Operations/Engineering Department: Shuttle maintenance and repair Bio:    Born in 2365 on Mellanus, Visca came of age in a society in flux after contact with the Federation. Visca started working for the Mellanoid Space Program in 2382 (at first as an intern), supporting exploration of the Mellanus system for the next couple decades. But between Visca's growing identity crisis, the Mellanoid government reducing support for the MSP, a desire to see the wider galaxy, and increasing contact with Federationers, there seemed to be little future in the Space Program itself. An incident involving a Starfleet ship rescuing Visca's rescue shuttle wound up being the last straw for the veteran spacer.    In Starfleet, Visca's thrived. Far from home, and as just another spacer among many (some of whom understood her better than she'd understood herself), she finally allowed herself to explore her identity, to be herself. Her first assignment, USS Jemison, was an aging, overcrowded, outdated workhorse when she joined, but she still enjoyed it -- she liked being on a ship quietly helping people, rather than being sent out on dramatic, dangerous missions. Unfortunately for her, she was a bit too good at her job, and especially a bit too good at staying calm under pressure when things didn't go as planned. When Jemison went into reserve in 2415, Visca was reassigned to USS Hypatia, a Sovereign-class ship with a troubled, chaotic reputation, which itself is being assigned a five-year-long grand exploratory mission. Personality: Overall fairly reserved, but with a silly streak she's allowing herself to indulge in more. Likes; quiet, puzzles, board games (especially ones that focus on building an 'engine'), floral-patterned clothes off-duty Dislikes: Drama, gossip, the fact that she's a drama-magnet anyway Appearance: Silver-toned slimy body emulating a typical humanoid, with curly 'hair' at about shoulder-length.

I am old enough to remember when the Rhino was the Imperium’s daily workhorse rather than a super-special Astartes only ride, and the Imperial Guard used them as armoured transport. The 22nd had a Rhino as Colonel Ironfist’s personal command vehicle, but that got converted to the Praetorian Pattern Leman Russ.
Using an Aries conversion kit from Blood & Skulls Industry and a set of heraldry decals from Green Stuff World I decided to rectify the situation. The history I wrote for the 22nd tells of a pair of Rhinos gifted to the regiment. Now both are represented.
