S.VI - Ep. 2: The Nightmare is Real

-----------------------------------------------------------

EXT. BRAZIL – Amazon Area – NIGHT

-----------------------------------------------------------

X teleports into a dense jungle as the purple moonlit sky goads him to survey the area. He remains in his base armor as he walks around, admiring the multitude of temple ruins in the background. He also cannot help but notice a series of carved faces amongst the mossy ground. They are as eerie as they are beautiful.

ALIA: (o.s, filtered) This is the Amazon Area. I can't understand the situation there from the Hunter Base. I wonder if the Nightmare caused this jamming.

X: Probably. I’ll be on guard, Alia!

X walks on to find a caterpillar-like, mechaniloid enhanced with armored plating around it’s small body. The armor has a flat back, which could serve as a platform.

X: Hm?

ALIA: (o.s, filtered, informing) It appears to be a transport Mechaniloid. It has a loading space on its back.

X: Interesting.

X jumps on it’s back to test it out. The mechaniloid does not protest as it simply moves on, allowing X to ride on it’s back.

From there, he dash-jumps towards another one and notices an injured reploid by the 3rd one.

X: Huh?

ALIA: (o.s, filtered) An injured reploid! Make sure to send them to our Reploid Settlement for repairs and accommodations.

X: Right!

INJURED REPLOID: Auugh… help me…

X: (gasping) What happened, here??

INJURED REPLOID 1: (hurt, forboding) The Nightmare… is reeealll….

[INSERT TITLE CARD: The Nightmare is Real]

X scowls as he pulls out a teleporter ring.

X: You’re going to be okay. Just sit tight.

X sends him away and looks on. He passes by the caterpride mechaniloid and spots a large mantis-like mechaniloid. He narrows his eyes and charges up. After firing an X-Buster at the mantis, it is not destroyed.

X: You did this, didn’t you?

The mantis drools and creates a swarm of babies to go after X.

X: (nervous, retaliating) Didn’t You!!

He shoots several level 1 shots, which destroy the babies and chip away at the nightmare mechaniloid’s frame. It is eventually stopped, but not destroyed. X can notice a grid-like pattern of the mantis still remains. After a short moment, the grid flashes as if it is remolding itself. X quickly dashes passed the Nightmare Insect and spots an injured reploid who climbed up to safety above a rocky cave entrance.

X kick-jumps up the rock wall to meet the reploid.

INJURED REPLOID 2: Help… Please!

X: Don’t worry. You’re safe, now.

He gives the reploid a teleporter ring.

INJURED REPLOID 2: (teleporting) Thanks!

X nods and looks down below. With a quick breath and an exhale he dives down below.

-pan to-

----------------------------------------------------------- INT. AMAZON AREA – Cave Entrance - NIGHT -----------------------------------------------------------

After passing by multiple layers and a new mechaniloid upon his descent, X touches down in front of another Nightmare Insect.

X: Agh!

He pulls out his Z-Saber and swipes at it 3 times. It retaliates with a cutting blade from it’s pincer, thrown at him like a boomerang.

X: Ohh!!!

X turns with the cut to make it sting less as he charges up and fires an X-Buster to shut it down. He then passes by the grid with a dash and runs into a hidden nook within the cave as a moth mechaniloid follows him.

An injured reploid sits by an Armor Capsule, which remains closed. The moth sprinkles purple dust on him, which makes him uneasy and almost lose his balance.

X: (reacting) Hey!

He points his buster at the Killer Moth and blasts it to bits with a level 2 shot. He shakes off his damage and presses two hands into the back of his neck. With a slight glow from his palms he feels well again.

He looks down at the hurt reploid.

X: Are you alright?

INJURED REPLOID 3: That damn thing poisoned me…

X: Here, take this. They’ll look after you.

INJURED REPLOID 3: (teleporting) Thank you.

The moment he teleports away, Dr. Light appears, sensing that they are alone.

DR. LIGHT: X... I wonder when peace will return? I wanted you to live in peace and in a warless era... But we must put an end to this Nightmare... Forgive me. All I can do is give you this Armor... However, for security reasons, the Armor won't activate until all four programs are combined.

X nods in acceptance.

DR. LIGHT: Now I will install the foot program of the Blade Armor. This program will enhance your dash performance and enable you to perform the Mach Dash! You can dash while jumping and you'll be moving at such a high velocity that you will even be momentarily invincible at first! For the Earth. For the future. Good luck!

Dr. Light disappears back into the hologram and X smiles at his overgenerous creator. He steps inside the capsule and receives the armor program in a brilliant flash of light. The upgrade sparks into his gem as X feels a quick rush of power.

X: Aww, yeah!

He strikes a pose, feeling a sense of inner peace as he turns around and looks at the regenerated Nightmare Mantis.

X: Come on, you.

He charges up and fires at it, while it flings another slicing pincer at him. The pincer misses, while X advances directly in front of him and swipes his blade as quickly as possible. After three strikes, he is unsuccessful at stopping it, and the pincer strikes him in the back.

X: Agghh!

One more slash, and it is shut down as X dashes away with a grimace.

He walks down a narrow passage as a wormoid pops up from the ground. He narrows his eyes and shoots it down with level 1 shots. Another one peers out from above as he moves on. Yet again he shoots at it until it is destroyed. This one retaliates with a blast of it’s own that actually strikes X hard in the chest.

X: Ahhh! Man…

He moves on and shakes it off until he spots a strange creature floating behind a caterpride.

X: Alia! I got some unusual data signal.

ALIA: (o.s, filtered) It must be the Nightmare! Stay alert!

X shoots it down easily and notices that it leaves behind a mysterious orb of power. He grabs it to study it, but it seeps itself into his pores.

X: (scared) What the-!? What was that??

ALIA: (o.s, filtered) X, are you alright??

X: I… think so.

ALIA: (o.s, filtered) We’ll look into it later.

X shoots down another wormoid from above and then sees a Nightmare Mantis at the end of the tunnel.

He takes it down with a mixture of quick level 1 shots and two saber slashes. Then he gets out of the tunnel.

-pan to-

----------------------------------------------------------- INT. AMAZON AREA – Cave Opening – NIGHT -----------------------------------------------------------

The cave opens up as X can hear a familiar voice.

???: Hey, X!! Up here!!!

X: What the-? Iso!? What are you doing here?

He uses the caterpride to elevate him to a higher rock platform, where a different injured reploid awaits him. Iso calls out to him from the other end of the cave.

ISO: (hurt, damaged) D-didn’t want you to go it alone…. Tried to scout here before you…

X sends a fourth injured reploid to the settlement as he turns around, upset.

X: Well that was really foolish! It’s too dangerous out here. Go Home!!!

ISO: Agh, I would if I could, but… my teleporter’s damaged…

X: (annoyed) Oh great…. Don’t you think I would’ve brought you along otherwise??

X tries to dash-jump over to him, but fails. He climbs up again.

ISO: To be honest, I’m not so sure, sir. You’re levels above all of us.

X: /Hmph!

X /transforms into his Falcon Armor and attempts to use his stunted flight dash. It barely gets him the same distance as before. He drops down on top of the caterpride.

X: (failing, attempting) Urgghh-ughh…. (aside) I wish I had that Mach Dash, right about now…

ISO: We’re never gonna know how we measure up, if we don’t try…

Annoyed, he jumps up to the other side of the cave a final time and powers up.

X: Huuuuurgh, well there’s a difference between Trying and /DYING!!!!!

At the dash, X’s armor /flashes into black, silver and gold as he reveals his intimidating Ultimate Armor.

X jumps and Nova Strikes over to Iso’s position in a blaze of fury. At the last moment, X calms down and lands before Iso, smoking and panting at his wasted power.

X: (exhausted) Remember that…

The Ultimate Armor fades back into his gem, glowing black as his base armor prominently re-emerges before Iso.

ISO: U-uh, sir I’m s-

X: Save it. Did anyone else go exploring without telling us?

ISO: Aaah, Hanse and Araki are out here too. They got further than me…

X’s eyes widen, aggravated.

X: (intense) Go to the Settlement! They need you more, over there!!

X gives him a teleporter ring.

ISO: Fine, but.. Take this… It’s wasted on me…

Iso pulls out a Sub-tank and gives it to X feeling put out.

X: Iso…

Iso frowns and teleports away.

X: Shit…. Was I too hard on him?

ALIA: (o.s, filtered) Not at all. They weren’t following your orders. Don’t think for a second that you’re being unfair…

X: (smiling, reassured) Thanks, Alia.

ALIA: (o.s, filtered, suggesting) There are many Reploids everywhere who need your help. You should search all over for them.

X: Right. Will do.

X jumps down and passes a Nightmare Mantis by as he lands further below into the cave. A Nightmare Virus looks at him directly in the eye and X quickly shoots it down feeling spooked. He collects the mysterious orb it leaves behind and then spots another Nightmare Virus sauntering over to him.

X: (uneasy) Ohhhhh, no…

X charges up and blasts it away, grabbing the orb it leaves behind as well. He drops down before a Nightmare Mantis and slashes at it, before getting hit in the back with a boomerang pincer.

X: Yagh!!!

He quickly fires level 1 shots that shut it down, then runs into a deeper part of the cave.

-pan to-

----------------------------------------------------------- INT. AMAZON AREA – Deep Cave – NIGHT -----------------------------------------------------------

Deeper into the cave, the darker and prettier it gets as X runs across crystalline passages in shades of blue.

He takes a pole down to a lower level and notices mechanical power lines, as if a base is under construction here.

As he walks on, he notices that a Nightmare Virus is floating inches above a damaged reploid volunteer.

His eyes widen as he blasts it down with rapid fire. Then he dashes over to him and gives him a teleporter ring.

X: Phew…

HUNTERS: (o.s) WHOAAA!!!!!

X: (alert) Huh!?

With no time to react, X jumps down to where he heard those voices. A Nightmare Virus was about to attack Araki and Hanse, but X has swooped in with a charge shot. In an instant, it is gone, leaving only an orb behind, which Hanse grabs, only to be absorbed in his pores.

HANSE: (reacting, worried) Ha-aah..

X: Don’t worry…. Whatever it is, it seems harmless.

HANSE: Gosh, I hope so…

X: You two better get out of here…

ALIA: (o.s, filtered) Hanse, I’ll analyze it in the Lab when you get here.

Hanse nods as X offers them both teleporter rings. They gladly take them and teleport away.

Once they teleport, X kick-jumps out of the crevice, and notices the spiky terrain ahead. He carefully advances through a series of pillars as he navigates around another Killer Moth.

ALIA: (o.s, filtered) The transport Mechaniloid can stand on the spiny trap. You can use it, X. Try to ride on it!

X: Definitely…

X trusts in the caterpride as it slowly takes him across the natural set of spikes. A killer moth threatens to drug X, but he blasts it down. At the next pillar, he notices another moth waiting for him. It flies over to him, forcing X to dash over a set of spikes before he was ready. He lands before a caterpride and jumps on it’s back, turning around and blasting the moth down with a level 2 shot. He advances to the next pillar and quickly ducks while dropping down as another moth sprikles it’s dust on him.

X: (woozy) Aaaah.

He stands on a caterpride and shoots at the moth ahead of him, which quickly becomes two moths with his altered vision. After destroying it, he sees two explosions slowly become one and shakes it off.

X: Come on, X. Hang in there, buddy…

He looks down and sees an immense spike trap below. He decides to use the roof of the cave terrain to help him get to the next caterpride. From there, he dash-jumps to the far wall and carefully slides down to safety.

-pan to-

----------------------------------------------------------- EXT. AMAZON AREA – Floating Rocks – NIGHT -----------------------------------------------------------

X comes out of the other end of the cave only to find a series of unnaturally floating rocks before him.

X: What theeee…

ALIA: (o.s, filtered) What’s wrong? The signal is jammed so, I can’t exactly tell what’s happening all the time.

X: There’s a bunch of large rocks, and they’re all just… floating! It’s the only way to get through.

ALIA: (o.s, filtered) It must be the Nightmare. Please be careful, X.

X jump-dashes from boulder to boulder, shutting down Nightmare Manti in his path as much as possible to varying degrees as he notices a Reploid in need on his left. He doubles back to rescue him, then proceeds to move on. Jumping from rock to rock, he gets sliced up from the pincerangs, but perseveres to rescue two more reploids below him. He spots a final one above him, then notices the ground leveling out at the next set of boulders.

He jumps over to the next set of land and unknowingly enters a shutter.

-pan to-

----------------------------------------------------------- INT. AMAZON AREA – Gateway - NIGHT -----------------------------------------------------------

X walks downhill through the gateway and comes to a final shutter.

X: I got a strong data signal. It should be-

ALIA: (o.s, filtered) ...from an investigator. The investigator here is Commander Yammark. To be on the safe side, be sure to set up an Armor.

X: All right. I'll do it.

X walks through the shutter and spots Commander Yammark flying over to his area from the other side. He slowly lands and guards himself with three rotating dragonfly missiles, just to be safe.

X: You're the Nightmare investigator, Commander Yammark?

COMMANDER YAMMARK: Yes! I'm in charge of the Amazon area. Tell me! What is Zero up to? You must know something.

X: Zero has nothing to do with this! Stop accusing him!

COMMANDER YAMMARK: I won't trust both the Maverick Hunter and Reploid researcher. I don't know what you're thinking... I won't end up being betrayed and deleted! I will delete you first!

X widens his eyes, surprised.

X: Hey, wait a minute.

Commander Yammark stylishly shifts into a fighting stance and points at X.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: Prepare yourself.

He flies back and raises himself up a few meters, before his dragonflies unleash an array of green plasma shots.

X guards his face while forming a buster and charging up. He gets /hit and pushes forward.

X: /Ah, Damn it! Why does it always /COME TO THIS!!?

X /unleashes a charge shot directly at Commander Yammark and calls upon his Falcon Armor in a flash of white light.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: Ourgh..

X: I just wanted to talk!

He dash-jumps over to the Commander and tries to counter with his own rapid fire against the plasma shots.

Commander Yammark advances towards X, raining further blasts upon him.

X jumps after him with his saber out. When X gets near him, he kicks X in the head. On his way down, X slashes Yammark across the leg.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: (hurting) Ouuuwwwwwwaaaaaaahhhhhhh……..

Weakened, he descends towards the ground and favors his leg. X charges up and capitalizes with a piercing charge shot at the other leg. Yammark takes the hit and assertively flies above him, using the dragonflies to leverage more urgent shots at him.

X is blasted by the mass array of firepower, but with his Falcon Armor handy, he can walk through it and charge another shot.

X points and fires a buster at Commander Yammark’s chest, then dashes right for him amidst the firepower.

X: Take this!!

He slices him across the chest, opening up his chest cavity with a heavy slash.

Blood oozes out of Commander Yammark’s chest.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: Gghh.. D-damn you…

He sends his dragonfly missiles to knock X back and down, one at a time.

When X lands on the ground, he sits up, surprised.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: You’ve been his partner for a long time, right..?

X: Huh?

COMMANDER YAMMARK: W-why…. Why are you protecting a killer? After what he’s done to the World…?

X scowls and grimaces.

X: How Dare you insult his name!? He didn’t do anything!!!!

X fires a Charge Shot directly at his wound and gets up.

Commander Yammark grunts as he takes the hit. He shakes his head and attempts to regain a fighting stance.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: If that’s the case… How did we get here…? And why is his ghost haunting us?

X: (grimacing) That’s what I’m here to find out…

COMMANDER YAMMARK: Me too…

X’s eyes widen as they are both at a standstill. He takes a breath and decides to relinquish his buster. In a flash of blue light, he reverts back to his Normal Armor.

Commander Yammark nods and stands up straighter, letting his own guard down as well.

Suddenly a purple strand of light teleports behind Commander Yammark and forms into the shape of Zero’s Ghost. The Nightmare apparition slashes through his back without hesitation.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: (shocked) WHAAAAA-uuuuuuuuuuugggggghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The gash across his bloody chest is in the shape of an X as his circuits overload and explode amidst the chamber.

X is now face to face with the Zero Nightmare.

With wide eyes, X gasps, not believing what he is seeing. He gets up, confused and upset.

X: (wary) Who are you?

????: X, it's me. Don't you recognize me? I was damaged so badly by the Nightmare that the color of my body has been changed...

X pauses for a second considering the idea, then he immediately shakes his head.

X: Stop it! You can't fool me!!

The Nightmare Ghost looks perturbed and taken aback at X’s disbelief.

????: Have you become so insane that you can't even recognize me? That means that you have become a Maverick... As a Maverick Hunter and your friend, I have no choice but to retire you, myself!

X tears up.

What!? No…

????: HyyyyAH!!!!!!

The Zero Nightmare dashes after X and takes a slash, but X jumps back, quickly forming his Falcon Armor.

X: You’re not Zero!! You’re just a Nightmare, impersonating him. Well… I won't let anybody stop me.

The apparition grins, amused.

ZERO NIGHTMARE: (reasserting, insistent) It's me, X. Don't you recognize me?

His voice is almost taunting this time as X scowls, less afraid of the imposter. His eyes dry up.

X: (charging up) ... I know. You are just a cheesy fake. Well, what do you want from me? What's on your mind…?

The Nightmare walks with his silver saber out and a wicked grin. X takes out the real Z-saber, ready for anything.

ZERO NIGHTMARE: Heh… I've been looking for my Hunters... To wipe out! Time to die, X!

The Nightmare Zero jumps and swipes his blade down at X. X immediately raises the Z-Saber up and counters with a parry that puts them both at armslength. Their sabers pressing against each other serve as a test of wills.

X: Arrrghhh, you’re Crazy!!!! I won’t let you Win!

ZERO NIGHTMARE: Too late…. I already have.

He uses some virus energy to blow X back, forcing him to down on the ground with a hard landing.

X: Oughh..

ZERO NIGHTMARE: Hehehehehehehe. Now join me…. In HELL!!!!!!

He tilts his saber down and dash-jumps right over to X, who has no time to react.

In an instant, he vanishes.

The Nightmare Zero looks up and sees small traces of teleportation light disappear into the night sky.

ZERO NIGHTMARE: Hm.. He’s a stubborn one. I’ll get him to come around though…

He narrows his eyes with a calm smirk, before teleporting away himself.

-cut to-

-----------------------------------------------------------

INT. MHHQ BUNKER – Lab Area - NIGHT

-----------------------------------------------------------

X appears on the floor, shocked and afraid with a gasp.

X: AH…!

He looks around him, feeling embarrassed and ashamed as Alia immediately runs over to him and kneels by his side.

ALIA: Oh my God, X…. are you okay??

X: No…

ALIA:

(sighing) I know…

She puts a comforting hand on his shoulder and rubs his chest for a moment as he puts a hand out. She immediately grabs it and helps him sit up.

X & ALIA:

What happened?

They both do a double-take and trip over each other’s words.

Wait, you don’t-

ALIA:

I’m sorry.. you go first..

No, I’m curious…. What did you see?

ALIA: Well… I was going to debrief you after Yammark’s signal went out, but then I saw you were engaged with the Zero Nightmare! I tried to stay out of it and let you do your thing. I know you hate it when I interrupt you… I’m sorry. I had to bring you back to safety…

X’s eyes completely soften up.

X: Hey… it’s okay. Oh my God, are you kidding? You saved my Life…

He hugs her. She immediately reciprocates with a tight grasp.

X: Thank you…

Her voice gets brighter as she changes the subject.

ALIA: Well, the good news is, you got Yammark’s option now! His Dragonfly missiles will help you on offense and defense.

They break away from their hug as X looks at her and nods.

X: Okay…. That sounds good. I could really use a versatile option like that next time I go out there.

ALIA: Please take your time! May I debrief?

X almost chuckles.

X: (smiling) Su-ure. Haha…

She picks herself up and walks over to her monitor station. X gets up and walks over. After she situates herself at her console, she begins.

ALIA: Ookay. Commander Yammark… The ex-investigator of the Amazon area. He was a Reploid created for a nature preservation project, 3 years ago. During the Repliforce War, he burnt a forest in the Papua Jungles via control disorder.

X: Hm?

ALIA: He wasn't accused of the incident, but... someone altered Yammark's flying system...

X: Wait a minute…

-FLASH-

----------------------------------------------------------- EXT. PAPUA JUNGLES – Guerrilla Facility - DAY -----------------------------------------------------------

Caption: 3 years and 1 month ago…

From a distance, a violent explosion can be heard, north of X, Zero and their old teammates TAKUMA and ZEPHYR.

X: Haww?

ZERO: What the-!?

ZEPHYR: What do you think? Suicide bomber??

Takuma looks hard at the fiery explosion by the trees in the distance.

TAKUMA: I dunno. I don’t think so. That area doesn’t seem to be occupied by Repliforce at all.

X: You two investigate. We have to talk to Web Spider.

ZEPHYR & TAKUMA: Yes sir!

-FLASH-

----------------------------------------------------------- INT. MHHQ BUNKER – Lab Area - NIGHT -----------------------------------------------------------

ALIA: He crashed and died. He was created by... my colleague... Gate.

X nods and closes his eyes.

X: So he was revived…

ALIA: (regretful) Yep. They all were…

X widens his eyes as he digests that information.

X: It’s a shame. For a minute, it looked like he was about to cooperate with us.

ALIA: None of them are bad people, but I fear that this Nightmare and their perception of Zero has compromised their judgement…

X: I’m all too familiar with that…

Alia gives X a sad look and changes the subject as she pulls up an image on the monitor.

ALIA: We also need to discuss the mysterious item you've found. It's related to the Nightmare. Let's call it the Nightmare Soul.

X: (nodding) Okay.

ALIA: I was thinking we should start a ranking system. Collect the Souls to increase the ranking.

X: Huh? Why??

ALIA: Douglas had mentioned that he should be able to create new parts to enhance your stats in battle. Not just yours, but for our Recruits as well. With more of these Nightmare Souls, he’ll be able to make better parts for everyone! As the Hunter Rank increases, you'll be able to equip them. Understand?

X: I think so…

ALIA: The higher your ranking, the more Parts you can equip. When you achieve a really high rank, Douglas will even be able to make Limited Parts. Unlike the other Parts, these would be so powerful that you can only use them once.

X: …Wow! You two aren’t kidding around this time.

ALIA: (professional, but playful) I live for this stuff, X. And how dare you; I wasn’t kidding around last time. We almost faced the end of the World.

X: I know, I was just saying.. I’m really impressed.

ALIA: This Nightmare is scary. We need to do everything we can to ensure you’re safety. You’re our only hope. I don’t.. wanna lose you…

X places his hands on her shoulders.

X: (comforting) You won’t. I promise…

She looks up at him from her chair and gives him a sad smile. Then she buries her head in his stomach and gives him a hug again with a tight squeeze around his waste.

ALIA: If that ever happens again, I’m teleporting you right back here. Do you hear me?

He kneels down and embraces her in a warm hug again.

X: (whispering) Good, I’m counting on it…

She looks at him with soft eyes. He returns the look as they both smile with a blush.

Then, their lips meet and they embrace in a passionate kiss.
