On the case of Piotr Rasputin having abandonment issues
Alright friends, it is once again way too early/late for me to be up, which means that it is time for-- you guessed it!-- another unnecessary in-depth reading of Xavier's very own tinker toy boy. Do you have your corkboard, red string, pens of many colors, sticky notes, and thumb tacks all ready? Good! Because tonight, we are reading FAR too much into things!
I've been going back through some old Colossus panels I have saved, as one is prone to, and I've noticed a trend... There is quite a bit of content which would explain or give reasoning towards Piotr having abandonment issues and other related social difficulties.
First case of abandonment (and by abandonment, I mean both feeling abandoned AND feeling as though he has abandoned someone) we have Piotr, as a child, falling into a deep, dark hole and being trapped down there for a while. Mikhail is the one who found him (keep this in mind).
Chronologically, the next sudden good-bye happens when Mikhail heads for the stars, and is fated to "never" return. There's a moment shortly after Mikhail's death when, in a fit of grief, Piotr unlocks his powers. In one iteration, his mutation frightens his father so badly that he's thrown and locked into the barn alone for quite some time.
Tumblr media
Remember the hole scene? It's mirrored later on in Bloodlines where Mikhail abandons Piotr down in a dark prison, where we see Piotr pleading "Don't leave me here."
Tumblr media
Ow.
When Piotr leaves for the X-Men, there are panels upon panels of him pleading to return home, being homesick, and otherwise longing for his family. This separation messed with his ability to contribute to his team and keep a clear head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, we have the times Illyana was kidnapped and oscillating between Limbo and Earth, and Mikhail "dying" (teleporting to an alternate dimension, but in such a way to make Piotr believe that he'd committed suicide).
Piotr wasn't there when his parents died. He was forced to see their deaths in hyper-detail via the soul skinner after the fact.
Focusing on Illyana, guess who felt grief over being unable to save her from Limbo? Guess who didn't make it in time to see her die of Legacy Virus? That's right, Piotr. That broke him, all he wanted was to be by her side as she passed. This was a turning point for him. He burnt all of his paintings and joined Magneto's Acolytes, and later died to cure the Legacy Virus, an act which is measured out both as Noble-- and stupidly suicidal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we have Ord. Piotr was trapped for possible years on an alien space craft and tortured on the daily, kept in literal darkness as he was violated.
Tumblr media
You want relationship trauma? (Quick note, I will never judge over what you may or may not pair, I am just pointing these things out to make a case). There was a brief stint Petey had with a woman named Anya. He saved her life, and they dated for maybe a day when he armored up in front of her and she promptly broke things off. She claimed that a man made of metal could have no heart.
There was Callisto, who cheated on Piotr with his own brother.
The dreaded "left at the altar scene" from X-Men Gold.
If we keep all of the above in mind, it paints a picture which better explains some of Piotr's behavior (in a perfect world, where writers also keep prior canon in mind lol). Why is he so defensive and protective of his loved ones, even if it annoys them? Why is he constantly giving second chance after second chance? Why does he fight so desperately to make others know they aren't alone?
Tumblr media
He holds everybody except himself in high regard. He sees himself as an object to be used, a means to an end, a shield. He jumps in front of bullets, bombs, and vehicles for his family, armor or no. He loves his friends, yet he hides himself away when he is at his most hurt.
Could it be because he sees himself as a man fated to be alone? As a boy, still trapped in some cold barn or dark hole? As a body to be used by lovers and enemies, a thing to be gawked at?

Can you recommend any good colossus stories? Where hes the main character and not a secondary character. I liked the x men origins: colossus buts its only one issue long.
Oooh that's a toughie. He doesn't get a lot of the limelight, all things considered...
Let's see... Yeah, there's Origins, that's the first one my mind went to. Colossus Bloodlines is a 5-part series that's worth a shot, about him facing family trouble in the homeland. There's the mini series Colossus, God's Country, featuring him having some difficulty on his own in America.
I'm probably forgetting some, but those are the more straight-forward ones that have a focus on the tin man, without having to comb through the mainline.
