Prompt 17 - Year
@jegulus-microfic April 17, Word count 957
Previous part First part
The knock at the door startled Regulus as he limped across the living area. James had said goodnight already and gone to dinner with his parents. Regulus’s heart fluttered as he opened the door, anticipating seeing James again. He’d told him not to sneak back as he must be sick of him after spending three full days with him. But that sweet goofball had grinned at him and said it was the best three days he’d ever had skiing. Regulus had snorted loudly into his shoulder. He’d never felt like this about someone. They just fit. He looked forward to seeing James and dreaded the end of the week when they would be separated.
When he met the eyes of the person on the other side of the door, he froze. The eyes were not the warm hazel pools he’d expected but the dark brown, almost black pits of Barty Crouch.
“Barty?! What the fuck are you doing here?!” Regulus gasped.
“Hello to you too, darling,” Barty smirked. Regulus tried to slam the door, but Barty stuck his booted foot in the doorway, causing the door to bang off him and shudder back open. Barty strode towards him, grinning a toothy smile. He pecked a kiss on Regulus’s trembling cheek.
“Did you miss me?” He purred, flinging himself onto the sofa. Regulus stayed facing the door, calculating whether he could make it to the lift in time. He quickly concluded that even without his hurt ankle, Barty was fast as lighting and would catch him before he even got halfway down the corridor.
“Why are you here, Barty? We broke up, and you’ve got zero reason to be in my room.” He tried to keep his voice even. But even he could hear the strain.
“It’s our one-year anniversary, pet. We should be together for this special day, don’t you think?” Barty rose from the sofa and slinked up behind Regulus. He wrapped his arms around his waist and whispered into his neck as his lips brushed against the delicate skin. “Which one is your bedroom? Or do you fancy having a go in your brother’s bed?” Regulus shuddered in disgust. Two months ago, and that would have worked. Hell, that would have worked three days ago. But right now, his skin was crawling at Barty’s proximity. He wrenched himself free, ignoring the way his ankle throbbed and pain shot up the joint.
“Get out. We broke up, end of. I don’t want to be with you, Barty. Go find someone else to gaslight.” He held the door open and gestured with his free hand for him to exit. Barty didn’t move. “Please, Barty, just go.” Regulus almost begged. He was tired and didn’t want to deal with him.
“Oh, no, baby. I’m not going anywhere.” His smile didn’t meet his eyes.
Regulus was spared any further arguing by the loud laughing coming from the lift. Sirius and Remus shuffled towards the hotel room door, holding each other and stealing kisses as they moved closer. Sirius pulled out his key card and waved it near the door until Remus pulled away, and he looked up to see what was wrong. Regulus had never been so happy to see his brother.
Sirius immediately stormed in and grabbed Barty by his collar before forcibly dragging him out of the room.
“Remus, stay with Reggie while I make sure this one gets thrown out,” Sirius ordered over his shoulder before disappearing into the lift.
Regulus let out a shuddering breath as he hobbled his way over to the sofa and sunk onto it, dropping his head into his hands.
“What was that all about?” Remus asked. Regulus peered out of the corner of his eye at him.
“I could ask the same about you and my brother.” Remus flushed scarlet. “Don’t worry, Doctor, it’s fine with me.” He added, not wanting to make the kind doctor too uncomfortable. “That was my ex,” He continued. He apparently found Remus easy to spill his guts to. “I broke up with him a couple of months ago, but he keeps phoning me. I haven’t answered any of them, but this morning James answered it, and I’m guessing that’s why he came here. Though I don’t know how he knew where we were.” Regulus’s brow furrowed as he tried to figure it out. How had Barty known where he was? His head snapped up as he remembered something. He opened his phone and checked his apps. Barty had downloaded a tracking app the first time he’d lost him in a bookshop as a joke. He hadn’t thought it was actually working. He opened it, and two red dots appeared inside a building with the same name as the hotel they were in. “Mother fucker!” He exclaimed.
“What is it?” Remus jumped but collected himself quickly.
“He’s tracking my phone!” Regulus spat as he tried to figure out how to turn it off and delete it.
It appeared to be paired to Barty’s phone, and if he unpaired them, Barty shouldn’t be able to track him anymore without Regulus’s permission. His finger hovered over the cancel button when Remus grabbed his hand.
“Wait for Sirius to get back before you do anything.” He warned before swiftly releasing Regulus’s hand.
“Okay,” Regulus agreed, putting his phone back down.
“You know, as your Doctor, I can prescribe something to help,” Remus told him, perching on the sofa beside him and holding out a glass of whisky. Regulus rolled his eyes and huffed out a laugh but took it, taking a grateful sip.
“Best Doctor I’ve ever had.” He raised his glass to Remus before taking another mouthful of the burning liquid as they waited for Sirius’s return.

There's some science to February's bonus day!!
Every four years, during a leap year, the imperfect match between the length of a calendar year and Earth's orbit result in a calendar adjustment known as a leap day.
The length of a year is based on how long it takes a planet to revolve around the Sun. Earth takes about 365.2422 days to make one revolution around the Sun. That's about six hours longer than the 365 days that we typically include in a calendar year. As a result, every four years we have about 24 extra hours that we add to the calendar at the end of February in the form of leap day.
Without leap day, the dates of annual events, such as equinoxes and solstices, would slowly shift to later in the year, changing the dates of each season. After only a century without leap day, summer wouldn't start until mid-July!
