"You're everything to me" Convin, Connor does the hand thing (peel off synthetic skin) and Gavin is curious

Gavin was in the hospital, and it was his fault. He hadn't moved fast enough, hadn't put it together until it was too late.

Gavin had gone into surgery two hours ago. No one would say anything about his condition, but that wasn't odd. A gunshot wound to the stomach would be hard to take care of and heal from, but it was possible.

Hank sat beside him, keeping a hand on his shoulder for comfort. Gavin and him were now at least ok with each other. They still had their problems, but overall they could get along.

They had needed backup and Gavin was there. He shouldn't have been there. Connor should have been able to handle it. But he was, and he got shot. The guilt ripped through him just like any bullet or knife could.

His heart (well, not his actual thirium pump, but you get the drift) twisted as he thought about Gavin on the operation table. Humans were so fragile, but so stubborn. They always throw themselves into danger even when the probability of death is high.

He should have been the one to take that bullet. Gavin shouldn't have pushed him out of the way. It was much easier to fix an android than a human. Why was he so god-damned careless with his own life? Didn't he know people cared about him? That Connor cared about him?

A nurse stepped into the waiting room and looked around before looking down at the file. "Gavin Reed?" She calls out.

Connor is on his feet faster than he's ever moved before. She doesn't look incredibly upset so either she's become numb to death or Gavin was alive.

"Detective Connor Anderson, and Lieutenant Anderson, we work with Gavin." Connor said. The nurse nodded and lead them through a series of doors and hallways.

They get to a door that's closed and she stood before it. "I've got some good news and a little bit of bad. Reed has made it out of surgery, he's stable. The bullet didn't go all the way through, but we retrieved it. You can go in, but he won't be lucid for at least a few hours but even then he may need pain meds that could affect his coherency."

It could have been so much worse. Hank stays outside to talk to the nurse more, but Connor goes in. Gavin is laying on the bed, shirtless but wrapped in bandages. His heart beat is steady as he sleeps.

He's hooked up to an IV bag, and Connor quickly scans it. It's filled with fluids and another bag holds blood. Gavin also has a nasogastric tube, and a foley catheter. It's not a pretty sight, but Gavin's face is relaxed. At least he wasn't in pain.

He grabbed a chair and scooted it over so he could sit to the right of Gavin. Connor looks him over, seeing all the odd and new scars. It was no surprise to Connor to see them, their job was dangerous after all.

He slowly reaches out with a trembling hand to touch Gavin's. He sighed in relief when his hand was warm. He was still so still, and he just wanted Gavin to wake up. He'd even be fine if he acted like he did before the revolution. He just wanted him awake.

After a bit Hank comes in, and Connor doesn't even look up. He doesn't move his hand away from Gavin's or look away from his still face. Hank slowly walks over, and brings a chair with.

"You ok, son?" Hank asks. He finally looks away from Gavin, and to Hank, his vision blurry from unshed tears. Hank sighs and pulls Connor in. He just rests his head on Hank's shoulder as he cries, but soon he grips Hank's jacket. "He'll be ok."

He doesn't know how long he cries, but soon his eyes are heavy. Hank doesn't say anything, just rubs his back.

Eventually he moves away from Hank and leans into the bed, closing his eyes. He didn't mean to, but he slowly slipped into stasis, still holding Gavin's hand.

"Connor?" He hears, his head snapping up. Gavin is blinking at him, actually holding Connor's hand. Hank is asleep beside him, but Gavin is awake. He's awake, and alive, and holding his hand.

"Gavin!" He grins, trying to keep his voice down. "How do you feel? Do you need pain medication? Water?" He asks, ready to get up to get whatever he needs.

Gavin blinks a few times and looks around, brows furrowed. "Fuck. My stomach hurts." Ah, not completely lucid then. Understandable given the circumstances.

"You were shot." He mumbles. Gavin looks down at himself with wide eyes. It was actually pretty funny to see his expression change from confused to shock. With his free hand he pokes at his stomach and winces. "Don't do that."

Gavin blinks and nods his head, resting his head back onto the bed, and looking over at Connor. "Right, yeah I was shot. Bastard. Did we… uh, did you catch them?"

Connor smiles and squeezes Gavin's hand. "Yeah, we did." Gavin nods and tries to smile. It's definitely awkward but incredibly adorable.

Gavin looks down and eyes go impossibly wider. "Woah, your hand is white. Uh, right android. That's so cool." He slurs his words just slightly. Connor looks at their combined hands and blushes.

He hadn't meant to expose his chassis; his hand glowed blue where they touched. "Woah, you're glowing. Why are you glowing? Are you going to explode?" Gavin asks, but doesn't let go of his hand.

"I… it means I like you, very much." He really didn't want to confess his love while Gavin could barely think straight.

"Huh." Gavin says, wiggling his fingers around with a smile. "Why?"

Connor shook his head fondly. "You're everything to me." It was true. He felt such strong emotions for Gavin that it could be overwhelming.

"Nice. Fucking hell my stomach hurts." Gavin sighs. Connor rolled his eyes and pressed the call button for the nurse.

The nurse came in and gave him morphine. Gavin stared at her, a confused look on his face. Once she leaves he looks back to Connor, eyes drooping. "Hm, you're unfairly pretty. With your… pretty face and uh, pretty eyes. I like your eyes, and face." He mumbles.

Connor grins and let's him ramble until he's asleep again. He was definitely going to talk to Gavin again once he was completely off medication that could inhibit his state of mind. For now, he'll just watch over him as he sleeps.

Exhilarating. Feels-inducing. Heart-attacking. I didn't just read this book. I devoured it. Inhaled it through my pores. Drank it in with haste and thirst as if indulging in faerie wine after a year-long fast. Perhaps from a storytelling point of view, this wasn't as good as “The Wicked King” but nevertheless, I revelled in every single page. I read it in one go, from cover to cover, and all I can say is that it was absolutely worth a sleepless night. And then it left me so satisfied and full of reflections and feelings, then I just cannot stop thinking about it. And aren't those books, which leave us content and sated, and yet somehow yearning for even more of a good thing, just the best? Now, onto the details, the good and (despite 5-star rating) the bad: I. the sister thing Anyone who knows me, knows that I absolutely hated Taryn in the first two books. Betrayal of her sister aside, I just found her utterly and unforgivably...boring. In "The Queen of Nothing" though, I was happy to discover depths to her character that weren't that fleshed out before. From killing Locke (YASSS!!!) to standing up to Madoc, side by side with Jude and Vivi, Taryn finally showed with her ACTIONS, not words, which side she is on. And look, this perhaps doesn't erase what she did to Jude in “The Cruel Prince” but I liked how the story unfolded between them in this last installment. This is not a series about pure-hearted good characters. They all did awful things. They all did some of those awful things to each other. So in the end, I'm glad there was no "grovelling" on Taryn's part, no act of "official" forgiveness. That's not how things work in Faerie. More than that, all the sisterly moments! Loved them! Whether it was Taryn trying to gossip about Cardan with Jude or the three sisters united against Madoc, it was great to see a positive sister relationship in a fantasy for once. I definitely prefer them together than apart and set up against each other. II. the trick thing I had lots of theories after finishing "The Wicked King" about Cardan banishing Jude from Elfhame and damn, do I have a satisfaction of getting it at least partially right. I know a lot of people hated what Cardan did in TWK but personally, I loved that plot twist. I thought it evened out the playing field between them and I always knew there was more to it anyway. And would you look at that, it was indeed a trick! When Jude and Cardan reunited and he was so utterly confused that Jude WASN'T proud of him for pulling one over her...priceless. He did it to impress her. He did it to protect her (and his kingdom). He did it to, let's face it, get back at her. It's so wonderfully twisted, my pitch-black heart rejoices and flutters. Added to that delicious cake of dark and twisted is a cherry of irony on top which is the fact that Jude did realize that she could pardon herself...and didn't. She, who is usually so smart and devious and quick to pick up on other people being smart and devious, wasn't able to see through the smoke screen and guess Cardan's true intentions. Which isn't that surprising to me, because when it comes to feelings, my daughter Jude is the most hopeless and oblivious person in that fantasy realm. That lack of trust in Cardan cost her and it only underlined what needed to change - to be able to rule together, Jude and Cardan need to lower their defences when it comes to one another. But more on that in the next point. III. the love thing Jude and Cardan's dynamic has been one of my very favourite things about this series from the start. I love them both as characters and I love them as a ship. I was happy to find out that what unravelled between them in this last installment was utterly (with some minor mishaps) satisfying. Their reunion, untangling the coiled web of mistrust and misunderstandings, learning to trust and be trusted...it was everything. I longed to see them as allies and a team, rather than enemies and reluctant/forced co-operators from the start (not that it wasn't fun to see them as enemies and reluctant allies, IT WAS SO MUCH FUN) and here I got what I wished for. Love scenes, their talk of lowering their shields, those that had been kept up for so so long, melted my heart. Cardan's love confession? Perfect! And so fitting for him in my opinion. Only he would say ILY in such an off-handed manner.

Basically:

"Hi you probably already know this because you're so smart (and I love you) but I've loved you for a long time, OK we got stuff to do BYE" Perfection 😍😂 Cardan was also, quite obviously, Jude's first stan, and I just live for relationships like that. And the longing between them was so palpable. Especially in Cardan's letters to Jude, I could feel how much he missed his Queen *ugly weeping* I'd say that Jude's confession could've been handled better, as in, there could've been even more build-up to it, considering how good she is at holding on to her walls and defences. Still, I loved it in its own way. IV. the character development thing I know there are some who were dissatisfied with the plot twist and the ending. Personally, I thought it was very fitting though. The decision that Jude faces? Between love and power, between her own humanity and the possibility of utter control over Cardan? That dilemma was the best way to capture the character development she had gone through throughout this series. Ever since the beginning, Jude had been wondering about one thing - where will she draw a line? Is there a line that she won't cross to get more power? She got her answer in this book. As Jude was making her choice between killing Cardan or killing her chances at ruling Elfhame, I was crying heavy tears of someone who had witnessed a painful yet utterly satisfying journey. Jude had always been scared. Jude had always resented being weak and human. Jude had always craved power and security for herself. Jude had always hated being vulnerable and relished in the control she gained over Cardan. And with her choice, she embraced so much of what she had once resented. She chose hardship and uncertain future and opened herself up to being hurt. She chose love. She chose being human and weak and what-the-hell-I'll-deal-with-it-because-I'm-not-weak-at-all. She chose Cardan. *this reviewer took a 5-minute break at this point to wipe off all the tears from her keyboard* The point is, I loved the character development this choice represented and yet, Jude also remained very much herself by doing this. V. the loose thread thing Not to be overly sweet on this book, there were also some loose ends, all right. For one, I wish the relationship between Cardan and his mother was explored more, same with more insight into Jude's biological parents, especially her mother. It seemed like it was teased a lot in two previous installments and yet, I didn't experience nearly as much delivery as I expected on those subjects. I just wish there was more on this. I could go on and on but there was just so much - and in such a (relatively) short book too. What I will say is this - The Folk of the Air had been shaping up to be one of my favourite fantasy series, and "The Queen of Nothing" made it into a fact. Which it could have very well failed to do, as it often happens with final books in a series. Because ever since I finished "The Wicked King", I've been holding my breath, waiting for the proverbial other shoe to drop and for this final book not to live up to the very high expectations I've had for a conclusion not only to a great series, but also some of my very favourite characters and relationships. But after reading this, "I feel as though I can finally breathe again."

Jacob goes to the Deputy’s cage, getting them ready for their training only to see they’re sick, high fever.

He should just let them die. 

Honestly, it’s the least they deserve after everything. After what they’ve done to the Project, to all the carefully-laid plans, to years worth of hard work– He’s tempted to just put a bullet in their skull for the trouble, let alone let their body smoke their own soul out. Joseph would be disappointed, since this is his harbinger of the Apocalypse or whatever the hell he’s been saying for the past few weeks. 

And Hell followed. 

Hell, he called them. That’s a long shadow to fill for someone who can’t fight a temperature over the standard ninety-eight-six. But Hell they’ve been. At least, the numbers of soldiers Jacob’s lost alone can attest to it. They’ve been weeding out his own weak, culling his herd. His best-of-the-best have fallen like cattle in a bad winter to this son of a bitch, and he should just let nature take its God-given course. 

He watches them, watches the firelight play on the too-hollow contours of their face, the sweat on their brow snaking down their cheeks in rivers to soak into the collar of their filthy jacket. They’re huddled in a corner of the cage, curled inward like a goddamn prawn, shivering and chattering their jaw on words that lose all meaning and tone and come out incomprehensible. Their eyelids flicker like they’re caught in a dream. And Jacob watches their hands clench into fists, then relax into claws, grasping at nothing but air.

Pratt’s pretending he isn’t concerned. He stays still behind Jacob, but Jacob knows that Pratt’s watching the Deputy with wide eyes, waiting for the culling to come. It’s what you do with a sick animal that is too beyond help. Take ‘em out behind the shed, he remembers someone (far too long ago) telling him. He can almost smell the sick on them, the way his Judges ply the air with their snouts, waiting for the last weak member of the herd to drop away. Pratt has a right to be concerned, then. When this one drops off, that’s one of the last little shreds of hope he had dying with them.

So, that’s how it should be. The apocalyptic Deputy done and over with, be it by fever or firearm. 

Jacob gets up from his chair and strides over to the cage. When he unlocks the door, he hears Pratt suck in a breath like a man watching an execution. It’s a whole three strides from one end of the cage to the other, and then Jacob’s squatting beside them, his palm to the right side of their neck. Hot, damp flesh smolders beneath his hand, and the Deputy groans before tilting their head towards him. Glassy, too-bright eyes raise just for a moment to stare at him before their eyelids flicker shut again.

A broken neck would do it. A crushing hand to the windpipe. Skull to the bars of the cage. Any of it. Anything at all.

He should kill them.

…

He can’t.

He can’t.

His hands move before his mind can catch up, and Jacob doesn’t even take the time to monologue to himself the way his family is so fond of. He doesn’t search his own grey matter for a reason to his actions, because that would take so damn long to parse out, and he’d just end up pissing himself off.

His right arm goes around their back, shoulder blades pressing against him. His left hooks up under their knees. It’s no effort at all to lift them up, to carry them to a warm bed, to a plastic container of acetaminophen, to saline IV bags and water bottles. To fucking save the Deputy’s life when he shouldn’t. 

Pratt might say something. In fact, Jacob’s sure he did. But all he can do is grunt and look down at the Deputy’s head lolling against his shoulder, eyes opening and closing, only to open again and look at Jacob like they’re sure he’s just as much a part of their dream as anything else.

“Shut up, peaches,” he finally says as Pratt opens the door in front of him. Dutifully, obediently, Pratt doesn’t say another word, but Jacob can’t ignore that the little fucker looks grateful.

Bridge Four has come so far, from never even telling the other men their names to a full support group for each other. They all needed it, not just Kaladin; those bridge runs left them all broken, bitter people, cracking a little more with each run, each day they were treated like they only had lives for the sake of expending them under Parshendi arrows.

Wait, what's keeping Kaladin? Teft, is this you displacing anger at yourself onto Kaladin. A handful of spheres says it is. But no, Skar is agreeing… Kal, what's going on here, where your own bridgemates think you're keeping aloof?

I'm still wondering how they hope this whole recruitment thing is going to work out – if they want to try to make true Radiants of some of these men, of if they simply hope for more squires that osmose their ability from Kala-Syl? To be a Radiant, one must be broken, down to one's soul, and that may hold true for the bridgemen, but recruits…? [hums]

What does Rlain think of the humans essentially occupying what used to be the last bastion of his people? He may be Bridge Four, but talk about divisive feelings. Sanderson, we'd better get a Rlain POV in one of these Bridge Four chapters, or I will have another bone to pick with you.

I'd say “paranoid much, Jasnah?” but considering all of the assassination attempts that have already been made, 'it's not paranoia if they're actually out to get you'.

[winces] Her life's work, all that time and effort and pain, now all so much common knowledge. That's…. painful. It's a good thing that they know it, but at the same time, it leaves a hollowness for Jasnah in its wake.

Shallan is definitely a topic that needs to be discussed.

The hell do you mean, 'we stand in the sea'. Is this in reference to whatever is out in the Ocean of Origins that the lighthouse-keeper mentioned in the Interludes? Maybe, maybe not, but it stinks of coincidence.

Admittedly, while I like the insight that Moash's chapters bring, I just don't care about him as much as I do our other protagonists. He's a good character, but I'm not really emotionally attached to him.

'Better than bridge duty' is not a metric by which anything should be judged, Moash, and you know this.

So. Hauling things, but where are you taking them…?

[winces] He can try all he likes to convince himself that his decisions and actions weren't his fault, but Kaladin gave you chance upon chance upon chance to drop Graves and his crew and stay with Bridge Four. At this point, you're just deluding yourself.
