Hiyori is terrified of Danny; something about him rubs her so so wrong. She tries her best to be nice, but she is the equivalent of a shivering chihuahua puppy in his midst. Danny feels kinda bad about that, but he can't really turn it off without turning human so he tries to stay as calm as possible around her.

Yukine, on the other hand, loves him. He thinks Danny's so cool and keeps bugging him about stuff from America and trying to show off how much he knows about the culture (a very impressive amount actually), and goes nuts seeing all the things Danny can do with his ghost powers. Danny feels the same about Yukine, gushing about his Shinki abilities and urging him into telling stories about his adventures and Japanese culture. These two become good friends.

Yato is kind of indifferent, and then the tiniest bit jealous once Yukine starts looking up to Danny. After getting to know him a little more, Danny has a hard time believing someone like Yato is a real "god".

It doesn't take long for Yukine to start looking up to Danny, just seeing how easily Danny can take care of Ayakashi (named "Phantoms" in the anime, heh) impressed Yukine enough to ask for advice. Thus, Yato's "oh hey potentially a customer!" doesn't last more than a day or two.

Danny does accidentally hang out with Hiyori in human form, and she does not recognize him in the slightest. She also isn't afraid of him at all in human form.

Important note: Danny, to this trio, only know him as "Phantom"

Side idea: I,,, am gonna be honest, I dunno how the naming system would work realistically, but somehow with some word, Yato gets cut off from saying the whole word of something and Danny gets a funny feeling in his chest! By the time he feels two hands holding him tightly, he realizes that he is A) not in ghost form, B) not in human form, and C) he was-

"A Thermos?" Yato asked. "Bit of a random item, but- HOLD ON YOU'RE A SHINKI?!"

Danny did not, in fact, know he was a Shinki.

The idea is: Yato, being a "god of calamity" (if this isnt actually true, F to me), and Danny, being... whatever the hell amalgamation of ecto-energy and ghost shit and human being that he is- they both sort of? overlap? If that makes sense. And so, even though Yato did not intend to call a Shinki, nor did he know Danny was a Shinki (and that he had apparently bestowed a name at some point and completely forgotten about except- that's impossible what the fuck) he had none the less a new Shinki in his possession. One that turned into a thermos.

Idk how this would go plotwise, but Yato would immediately turn around and go "hey, Yukine, isn't this great? We can use Danny to keep food warm in the winter-!" and then he gets wrestled to the ground by Hiyori of all people, who was previously keeping a good distance between her and Danny and also panicking a little bit because it seemed like his smell completely disappeared what-

And Danny is just "what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck" and "did my parents sell me to the calamity god at some point???"

The answer he gets is no, but he's never totally sure and is always suspicious about it.

Some more notes:

-> He freaks out Hiyori because he smells like an Ayakashi

-> Yukine is a little bit drawn to him due to their similar (enough) circumstances.

-> Yato doesn't give much of a shit beyond the usual, at first, because he's used to the presence of death and Ayakashi near him. And Danny's existence isn't much of a surprise to him after hanging out with a sort-of Ayakashi (Hiyori) for so long.

-> After transforming into a Shinki for Yato, Danny can, in fact, blight him! When he changes back to his non-thermos self though, he does not blight Yato.

-> Danny offers to teach Yukine math one (1) time when Hiyori is unavailable and it ends with both of them getting repeat lessons. Danny thinks its a rip-off that he's not in school and yet he's still doing homework.

A one-shot about Hiyori's traumatic first kiss and how a certain someone wants to help fix it ;]

Dwelling in the Past

“You sure have been hanging out with Ebi-chan’s new regalia a lot, Yukki.” Kofuku twirled her finger around a tuft of his hair, continuing in a sing-song voice, “Do you have a crush?”

He shrugged her off and returned to his homework, “N-no, it’s not like that. Ebisu-sama asked me to help her. Most of his regalia are too busy trying to take care of him since he’s so clumsy. Plus Yato went on and on about how strong my very first borderline was, so, Ebisu-sama’s hoping maybe there’s some sort of trick to it that I can teach her.”

“But why are you blushing, then?” She sat down next to him, trying to lean in and change his focus back to her.

Yukine groaned and turned away from her, continuing to scribble in his notebook.

“It’s for the best that it stays innocent—Yukine’d faint if a girl hugged him, much less kissed him. He can barely handle when Hiyori touches his shoulder.” Yato commented with a laugh from the other side of the table.

“Shut up!” Yukine hurled his pencil case at the god and nearly hit the aforementioned girl as well, but Yato raised his hand to block it. Still fuming, the boy mumbled, “Sorry, Hiyori.” Glaring back at Yato he answered, “As if you’ve kissed anyone other than Bishamon-sama! And even then, it’s not like she wanted to kiss you!”

Yato rolled his eyes as he shook the pain from his hand, “C’mon, kid. I’ve been around for hundreds of years. You really think that? I know I’ve been a loner for practically forever, but I think we all know I’m pretty damn attractive.”

Hiyori watched him with wide eyes, her face flushing and her fingers gripping her skirt a little tighter as the younger boy huffed in disbelief, “You’re bluffing.”

“When was your first kiss then, Yato-chan?” Kofuku propped her elbows on the table and leaned in towards the other god, intrigued.

“When was yours, Kofuku?” He raised an eyebrow, “You answer first and then maybe I’ll tell.”

Both of them had a decent amount of alcohol in their system and it was honestly surprising that nothing embarrassing like this had come up in the past year and a half of knowing them, but Hiyori was very tempted to make up some sort of excuse to leave at this point. But she just inwardly prayed that in their drunkenness they would switch to a different subject if Kofuku rambled on long enough.

Glancing around to make sure Daikoku was still out of hearing range, Kofuku smirked and explained in a low voice, “Well, it was pretty early on, since I’m the goddess of poverty and all. Men are the easiest to trick as long as you know what to do.”

“Kofuku, you’re horrible.” Yato shook his head with a laugh.

Hiyori gave a nervous laugh as well, wondering just exactly how many men she’d plunged into poverty with her looks over the past few centuries. When she glanced to the Yukine, he looked unsurprised and only half paying attention as she spoke.

“So it’s your turn now, Yato-chan~” Kofuku sat back up straight and stared at him expectantly.

Daikoku walked back into the room, putting a few more drinks on the table as he asked, “His turn for what?”

Yato immediately grabbed one of the beers and Kofuku looked up, “Yato-chan has to tell us about his first kiss.”

“You mean it wasn’t Bishamon?” Daikoku asked with a snicker as he sat down next to the pink haired god, surprisingly looking almost as interested as his goddess. Hiyori thought that he would frown upon the subject rather than egg it on, especially since Kofuku had taken the extra effort to stay quiet.

“That’s what I said.” Yukine piped in, “But apparently not.”

Yato finished his sip of beer and glared at the group, “Fuck you guys.”

“So? We’re waiting, Yato.” Yukine closed up his notebook and reached behind him to place it onto a shelf, turning back to look at his master with a smug look.

Hiyori held her breath as Yato groaned and started to talk, “Alright, alright, if it’ll make you shut up. It was a long, long time ago with some random girl who I’d been drinking with all night. I felt like my savings for a shrine was going nowhere so I just decided to blow it all at a bar. Happy now?”

“Well, I’m surprised there’s more than one, still. But is that the only other time?” Daikoku prodded with a raised eyebrow.

“I only said I’d talk about the first.” He took another drink, avoiding the subject.

Kofuku rubbed her hands together and laughed mischievously, then pointed her finger towards the brunette, “It’s your turn now, Hiyorin! If you’ve had your first kiss, that is.”

Hiyori turned a few shades darker, “I thought this was just about you two.”

“It was, but I’m turning it into a game!” Kofuku started to lean over the table before Daikoku pulled her back to keep her from knocking everything over, “C’mon, it’s fun!”

Hiyori felt everyone’s eyes on her and she looked down into her lap, muttering, “I…”

Kofuku’s expression softened, “It’s okay if you haven’t had it yet!”

Hiyori let out a breath, “I have, but…”

The scene at Capypa Land started to play in her head and she immediately cringed. Jumping up, she turned away from them and headed towards the door, “I’m sorry for leaving so suddenly, but I need to go home.”

“Hiyorin, I’m sorry! You don’t have to answer!” She heard Kofuku call out from the other room, her tone practically a whine, but she already had one of her shoes on and there was no way she was going back into that room with that subject lingering.

She had just made it back to the main pathway through the park when she heard Yato’s voice calling after her, “Hiyori! Hiyori, wait!”

“I’m fine, Yato. I just need to get home.” She kept walking, focusing at the bit of sunlight lingering over the trees in the otherwise darkening sky.

“It was him, right?” He continued to follow after her, his voice incredibly soft, “That’s why you’re upset.”

Hiyori froze in place and her lips trembled as she bowed her head, her throat growing tighter and her eyes starting to water as the moment began to play through her head again.

“I’m so sorry.” He let out a heavy sigh, “I hope—I hope that you didn’t have any sort of strong feelings for him before you found out who he was.”

She whirled around, though her gaze was still angled towards the ground as she corrected in a sharp tone, “It wasn’t like that!”

“Huh? But why—”

“He kissed me, I didn’t kiss him.” She raised the back of her hand to her lips and rubbed them like she had done a thousand times before, her voice cracking, “I want to pretend like it didn’t happen but I can’t.”

“Hiyori…” Yato reached out to grasp her wrist, gently pulling it away from her face and quickly letting go once he had gotten her to stop, “Then that wasn’t a kiss.”

She only managed to look up into his eyes for only a few seconds before the tears from her eyes threatened to spill over from the concern on his face. She took a step forward and collapsed against his chest wordlessly, her hands balled into fists as she started to cry.

He hesitated for a moment before he lifted one of his hands up to her shoulder, making small circles to comfort her. It was only once her cries had softened into tiny sniffles that he finally suggested, “If you really can’t stop thinking of that as your first kiss, you can just wish for it not to be.”

“What?” She lightly pushed herself off of him, looking up at him with confused eyes, “Wouldn’t you have to cut his ties with me to make me forget? Wouldn’t forgetting be too dangerous—”

“No, that’s not what I meant.” He interrupted her with a shake of his head, “You only consider that your first kiss because that’s the only experience you have, right?” Yato paused and his voice lowered, “Once you’ve had an actual first kiss, it won’t feel like it was something taken from you.”

Hiyori blinked a few times before she realized what he was suggesting and she felt the blush returning to her cheeks. She angled her body away from him and muttered, “Yato, you don’t have to do that.”

“I want to.” He answered quietly before he corrected himself, “I’ve wanted to, for a while now.”

She gripped her skirt again, biting her lip as she considered his offer.

“If it makes you feel any better, I haven’t really had a first kiss, either. Not one that meant anything.” Yato stuffed his hands in his pockets, “It’s always been when I’m drunk and desperate for any kind of attention.”

A small smile tugged at Hiyori’s lips, “So that isn’t the case right now?”

“NO!” He fired back in annoyance, repeating in a much quieter voice, “No. You mean everything to me, Hiyori. But I won’t do anything unless you ask me to.”

She stared at him for a moment before her shoulders fell, relaxing, and she started to reach into her pocket. Once she had the five yen coin in her hand and her wallet back in place, she looked up to see him looking off into the trees, tapping his foot nervously with a not so subtle blush across his face.

“Here.” She held out the coin.

He shifted slightly as his eyes flickered back to her, mumbling, “You have to say it.”

Hiyori let out a breath of air and closed her eyes, her hand unmoving, “I wish that my first kiss would be with you, Yato.”

She felt his fingertips trail across her open palm before he scooped up the coin, “Your wish has been heard loud and clear.” Yato’s arm moved to her waist once he had pocketed the coin and as she felt his other hand at the side of her face, she shoulders tensed up in response, “Don’t be nervous; all you have to do is tell me to stop and I will.”

Blinking her eyes open, she found his ice blue eyes staring right into hers and felt his words start to sink in. She nodded gently and closed her eyes again, “I know.”

He kissed her forehead first, light and chaste, and the same was true when he moved to her cheek. She was a little surprised at first by his course, but her surprise turned into a small laugh and her lips curved upward into a smile, which was exactly the opportunity he was looking for.

His lips brushed over hers, a little chapped but extremely warm, and it didn’t take her long to imitate his motions in return. As gracefully as she could, she moved her arms upward to rest on his shoulders and around his neck, pulling him just a bit closer.

He pulled away for a moment so that he wouldn’t get hit in the face by her elbow, but he immediately was drawn back to her. He was the one to smile into the kiss this time, raising his hand to push through the corner of her bangs and bringing a portion of her hair back behind her ear.

After a few more minutes she pulled away, left breathless by his actions as well as her own. As she took in a deep breath, Yato moved his hands back down to her arms and held on to her lightly until she closed the distance between them again and wrapped her arms around his middle. She rested the side of her head against his chest and the base of his neck, admiring his scent as she mumbled, “Thank you.”

“Thank you.” He answered teasingly as he returned her embrace, causing her to laugh once again.

I'm agree with your meta about gods ready to take choice away from the family who worksips Father. And how it's bad and kinda comfirm what father accuses Heaven to do.

But does Father really care for this family, does he really see them as egal? He sees people as tools (Yato, Nora, Yukine, ect..), he abused his own child (Yato, Nora) and manipules them into thinking that that's love, as soon that someone isn't agree with him anymore, he resort to manipulation, abuse and violence and sometime murder. He helped to plot Bishamon murder/forced reincarnation (failed) and planned Ebisu forced reincarnation to take the koto (sucess). He doesn't care how much people, shinkis or gods suffer or die as long he has what he want.

Ebisu and Take face a choice right. But do they have really a choice in the matter? Father can't be stopped otherwhise. He's dangerous. He says that he wanted to strike gods but doesn't care how much humans will suffer in the way. What he did with Yukine and the net was not good (for me it was a kind of brainwashing).

Yes they were ready to took the choice away and that's bad, tht's what Father accuse the gods of. but i think that they didn't see any other choice they weren't happy about it. They come with the idea to destroy a grave only.

It's not like if Father was benevolent, sadly because then this choice woudn't happen. Even if the godness of sun herself treated him a a child doing a tantrum, he's very dangerous.

Yeah all is a matter of choice. A horrible and unfair choice. Yato would have cut the bounds against their will, but Take can't do that.

The gods had the choice to kill the familly and cut the way to come back to life of Father, or leave them and having a dangerous guy causing havoc and destruction, and not only to gods but to humanity too (i mean with what happen in the last chapters, the gods face a even worst choice to protect humanity from Father's plan). What they could have done? It's not like if they had more time to think about it.

And this choice is horrible. And Take and Ebisu weren't happy to have this choice to do. And i'm happy that they didn't need to kill them. Take himself said that he felt bad to have manipuled the old man into make him believe that they would do the soul ritual after his death (they can't since they're gods) but they needed to cut father's way to come back again and again, because nothing else can stop him.

i agree with some of your points, but i don’t think whether father cared specifically for that family or not is pertinent to the situation. he cares (and i use that term lightly) about humanity in general, not specific people, similarly to how gods do (tenjin saying “gods are incapable of loving humans” lives in my brain bc it applies to all gods, but also to father and that could tie into ‘becoming what you hate’ but i digress!). he uses yato, mizuchi and yukine as tools, though i believe he does love them (or at least, he believes he loves them) in his own semi-fucked up way. he holds anger towards gods and their associates for holding up and reinforcing heaven’s system, which father perceives as fundamentally unfair and wrong, so i don’t think him planning the murder/reincarnation of gods really speaks to whether or not he cares about humanity. to father, gods and humans are completely separate entities, and what he does to one isn’t necessarily what he’d do to the other. every ‘wrong’ or ‘morally reprehensible’ or ‘shitty’ thing we’ve seen him do has been to gods, shinki, or associates of gods like hiyori, which likely makes him lump them into a single category. even if hiyori’s human, he still can’t see her as anything more than someone associated with heaven (+ him not caring about specific humans, just humanity in general)

ebisu and takemikazuchi just having and considering the choice of whether or not to kill/sever the ties of that family proves them to be what father believes all gods are, regardless of intentions. and really, i think intent is the least important part of this discussion! it’s the fact that gods are above humans in pretty much every possible way, and they can use that power as they see fit, because “a god’s decision is always the right one”. it’s about the fact that ebisu and takemikazuchi (and any god, for that matter) can takes lives, sever ties, and completely alter the life of humans with zero consequences. it’s about the fact that the humans have no input on a decision that can permanently alter their lives, and how they most likely won’t even realize what was taken away, or will forget, due to the separation of the near and far shore (think hiyori completely forgetting about yato and yukine when yato goes back to father despite the fact that they changed her and her life).

it’s a morally gray situation, and arguments can be made for either side. if gods are so above humanity, why are they incapable of stopping a human like father? if heaven isn’t unjust, why should kind people like that family have to suffer? does heaven not fully take father seriously specifically because he is, or was, human and isn’t on their level? should takemikazuchi and ebisu even be able to consider that choice, and not have to tell the people affected? does them feeling guilty absolve them of the fact that they manipulated a human, a being who is supposed to be beneath them, yet they’re supposed to serve? are the humans in the wrong for calling father again and again? should they even be judged by heaven’s standards if they don’t know the whole situation? does the situation absolve takemikazuchi and ebisu of the cycle, or are they perpetuating it anyway? should ebisu and takemikazuchi be judged for perpetuating the cycle when it’s all they’ve ever known and they’re products of a system? do the ends justify the means? like i wrote in the tags of that post, the immediate dilemma of the situation was the question of whether their needs (killing father) were worth taking a choice (without consent) from someone else, and if it was an okay to do it if the affected party wouldn’t even realize that a choice was taken away. and this, of course, can lead to bigger discussions like this one jaja

Chapter 107-2 thoughts

Literally earlier, before the chapter came out, I'd said I'm not believing Hiyori is dead. They'd have to show Yato naming her to get me to believe that. And then this chapter happened. Fuck me, I guess!

It seems like the general reaction to this is that it's sad but I'm not really sad I'm just angry. As it is, we have two options: (1) this is all a fakeout, one last time, or (2) this is actually the intent and the series will end with Hiyori being made Yato's shinki.

Neither is really ideal. A fakeout this late in the game seems pointless and would likely involve an asspull of some sort, but the alternative is something that absolutely spits on the themes of the manga thus far and effectively negates the arcs of both Hiyori and Yato.

So all in all, I really wish they hadn't gone this route in the first place, but I'll take the lesser of two evils at this point. This manga has always been about overcoming tragedy, your past does not define you, the near and far shores cannot survive without one another but too much interaction disrupts the balance, et goddamn cetera. Making Hiyori Yato's shinki makes this story a tragedy, teaches Yato the same lesson he's already learned (HOSPITAL ARC), and eliminates the only near shore major character in the entire series.

Now the question remains: can they still reverse this? Like I'll take anything at this point, but is it even possible within the story's logic? I want to say yes, and I've already seen a few rumors flying--this dimension is all an illusion, the koto no ha is destroyed so the bubble is too, the gods can reverse all the people that have died from the creatures, it could be possible for Hiyori to become a god, etc.... I'm clinging on to that first one personally, but at the same time, I feel a looming dread because...Yato saw Hiyori's memories. He saw memories he didn't personally witness, which kind of makes me think this is the real deal. But I also really don't fucking want it to be?

"Ina wasn't your first fic for the fandom literally this exact concept" YES because what makes a good AU wouldn't always be good in canon, right? This was something I wanted to explore in the concept of fanfiction, because it's a different medium to play with different ideas. At the end of it, I kind of went, "phew, that sure would be bad, wouldn't it!" and went on with my life.

I dunno man. I'm just angry and sad and disappointed, and it's annoying to me as well to look back at all the other things they've resolved perfectly. I think of how flawlessly executed Yukine's arc was, and want to cry. Why can't Hiyori get this same luxury? Fakeout or not, her arc should've been her parting ways, preferably on her own terms, because that's what the story's been leading up to. Yes, her grandma told her to be with the one she loves, but I assumed that was just in the moment, and wasn't actually foreshadowing her death.

THE FUCKING. HOSPITAL ARC. SHE IS SIXTEEN YEARS OLD SHE CAN'T DIE YET. NOT UNTIL SHE'S AN OLD LADY!!!! YATO SAID SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT DID HE LEARN FROM THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEVER LOVE ANYTHING I FUCKING GUESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At this point I'm going to deny it either until Adachitoka says sike or the manga ends. But needless to say, my reread's been postponed. I've been putting it off because of being busy irl, but if I reread now I'll just be bitching the whole time, and I don't want to do that to myself, and I don't think you guys want to read that either.

If it ends this way, I'll be bruised and bitter for years. If Adachitoka says sike, and Father dies believing Hiyori is dead (cause what was up with him losing his eyes), I'll at least cherish this one small mercy, but man, this is a sore blow. I'm sorry that normally my thoughts are excited and this one's just angry, but I can't put a positive spin on this yet.

Okay, so this kid was called Haruki Tajima when he was alive. When Yato turned him into a part-time sword, he was given the name Yukine in human form and Sekki in sword form. Most sources and fans call him Yukine, so I'll do the same.

Back up a smidge. After Haruki died, his ghost wandered for a while before getting turned into a shinki (sword/ghost) by a local god named Yato. One thing leads to another, and Yukine keeps helping Yato out.

Yukine is blunt, snarky, and generally off-putting. He's also impulsive, emotionally unstable, and a bit of a petty thief. But beneath all that, he's trying to be a good kid. He works hard, tries not to make the same mistake twice, and is loyal.

That loyalty leads to insecurity whenever Yato uses another shinki, but that doesn't end too badly. The same can't be said about trauma around his death, which ends up weaponized by a major villain, but all of that sounds like a big spoiler! Let's not talk about that.

Instead, let's see what Tumblr has to say about Yukine.

Early/pre teen boy who died young and is now under the care of a homeless god. Everything is so much worse in the manga which I'm not caught up with atm but this kid really deserves some love.

welcome to literally I haven't even finished a fic for this fandom yet and I'm gonna yell into the void about a ship anyway.

I do not understand why Yatoma is a rarepair?????

sure sure Kaz, (just get used to me calling him Kaz that's what I default to at this point,) is canonically in love with Bishamon and Yato and Hiyori are love interests even if I don't like that ship. but like??? when has that ever stopped shippers before?

I do like Bishamon and Kaz in a lot of ways, but y'all are sleeping on Yatoma and I will not let that stand.

(also: I am pretty aware of what happens in the manga but I'm still catching up so pardon mistakes I'm just silly little guy with Opinions.™️)

Yato and Kaz is such a beautiful and tragic love story. even more so than the other ships that involve either one of them.

Kaz is a guy who's loyal to a fault. he will do anything in his power to keep those he loves safe and this often works to his detriment. he's betrayed Bishamon multiple times because he wants to protect her. Kaz will do anything and everything to save his loved ones no matter what happens to him.

he gets killed? fine by him.

he becomes a Nora? as long as Veena has justice, he will do it. he will beg for it.

Kaz's extreme loyalty can even make him seem untrustworthy in a divine sense of irony. not just when it's being used against him for a plan to kill Bishamon.

Kaz's loyalty is something that can only end in pain for him because he just doesn't value himself. he is a tool to help his God(s) and nothing more.

and then there's Yato. someone can seem extremely noncommittal not by choice, but by circumstance. because the thing is, once you have a place in Yato's heart, he doesn't want to let go.

but he is forced to over and over again. he is forced to release Shinki because they think he's unreliable because he just dips sometimes and no one knows why.

he cares so deeply about the people close to him but it doesn't seem that way because

he doesn't know how to properly communicate that and

he keeps everything close to his chest out of fear.

Yato would do fucking anything to keep everyone safe and even die for them even though he is terrified about ceasing to exist.

Kaz is ready to die because he thinks that it's just the natural progression of his use and Yato is ready to die because he thinks it's the one good thing he can do.

but that's not quite it. Yato didn't want to die, he was trying to get his name out there so that he wouldn't die, but once it became clear there was no time, he accepted death because killing Father means more that continued existence.

this could be false, but just from what I've seen and been able to read between the lines of, Yato was always going to kill Father once he realized that he wanted to be better after Sakura, but he didn't want to die and never come back.

it was a waiting game. one that Father won out because Yato's name is still unknown.

but Yato is okay with that as long as he's free for maybe just a minute and everyone else is safe. everyone that made him truly happy.

okay, okay, but why does any of that mean Kaz and Yato are a good ship?

because they are tragically similar and drawn to each other.

Yato was Kaz's beginning and Kaz is Yato's end. Yato is the reason why Kaz is a Blessed Vessel and Kaz is what allowed Yato to go on the suicide mission that is fighting Father.

Yato is a God that barely feels like a God with all the chains around him. how little he was allowed to know. how much of his life was determined by a man that should, by all means, be beneath him but isn't.

Kaz is a Shinki that keeps falling in love with Gods (/p or /r) and is hurdling towards self-destruction as he tries to keep all his loyalties in order. a Shinki that has much more power of his Gods than any Shinki should. because Bishamon is emotionally reliant on him and Yato needs/needed him to protect him. (I'm not saying Kaz is manipulative. he's not.)

Yato and Kaz are God and Shinki in labels but reading their interactions it never feels like that typical master-Shinki relationship because it's not. they never have been that and never will be.

Kaz demeans his own feelings because "Gods can never love humans" and Yato does because he's afraid.

Kazune and Kazuma are distinctly different because Yato brings out a piece of Kaz that is much less strict and more,,, human. Bishamon and Kaz are always going to be limited by the fact that Kaz views her as above him. sure, he views Yato as above him too, but it's a lot less blatant. he talks to Yato with an ease that we don't see a lot.

Kaz is a very deliberate man. he rarely talks without purpose and intent. his words have to mean something for him to say anything. but it's different with Yato because they are different together.

Yukine might be Yato's guidepost and Blessed Vessel, but Yato is too parental over him to do some of the things he does with Kaz. because Kaz is his friend. not his kid.

Yato and Kaz are the definition of Star-Crossed Lovers because no matter what they will end up apart. Kaz's first loyalty is to Bishamon and Yato was always going to die trying to be free. they're God and Shinki. two Noras (I'm counting Yato as something like a Nora,) fighting back against someone who hurt them and then they will separate. back to their true masters. Bishamon and lady death herself.

I do find it weird that the implications of Ryoma knowing about Corrin's true heritage from the start, and still constantly appealing to their blood connection, are practically completely ignored by the game tbh.

Like, the only explanation that makes the “Ryoma knew about the letter all along” reveal in the Hoshidan sibs S-support make in-universe sense is that he was trying to manipulate Corrin into siding with them because he knew that it was going to be a hard sell for them to betray the only family they know in favor of siding with a bunch of strangers, even if it was the morally correct choice, and needed the man-power that came with having a dragon and the wielder of the Yato with them, to the point of lying through his teeth constantly about their siblinghood because it was the only other thing that could convince Corrin to side with Hoshido.

As much as i like what that theory adds to his character, i find it really weird that the moral implications of gaslighting someone into thinking they're related to you so they can be used as a pawn in a war are never addressed, not by Corrin, the rest of the Hoshidan sibs, or at any point in any of the routes.

I like to think that it's intentional, and that the big brothers aren't meant to be seen as paragons. Xander I've gone over on how fucked up he is, but Ryoma is written as a guy who seems perfect and has it altogether, but he's incredibly stubborn, quick to anger, vastly ignorant, can flip off his compassion at the drop of a hat, is not above manipulation or guilt tripping, and he himself admits that his jealousy of Corrin as a kid may have subconsciously made him not do anything when they were kidnapped.

I think that makes him more interesting, at least.

Crownslayer - seeing that artwork of Crownslayer on the hill of Chernobog rubble as a promo near launch then in that intro in-game was instantly 'wow i hope we get them that outfit is stylish- wait what do you mean she's an antagonist AHHH THAT'S NOT GONNA WORK OUT FOR HER! STOP!' (Lo and behold, clownslayer bullying) She just keeps getting fucked over progressively worse as things go on... W - The Character Of All Time. Starting off like 'oh sick ch1 boss design- hang on she SMOKEBOMBED AWAY!? NO DEATH ANIMATION ALLOWED HAHAHA HOW FUNKY! "KILL YOU LATER" alrighty!' and then uh yeah, Chapters 2&3 happened. Boy was that fucked up. But then we got to see her plans unfurl prior to Darknights Memoir which solidified her as Fucking Incredible. I finally understood the Hype about her banner on CN. Character I simply resonated with so strongly at that point. Phenomenal major player in the main story. Is she bound to meet a violent end? I feel like it'd be a neat and tragic mirror to the end of Arc 1 if there was an Amiya/W face-off eventually. FrostNova - Yelenaaaaaa....... Perish in Frost is gonna end me all over again honestly. Very important bnuyu. Listening to Lullabye repeatedly lately; in memoriam, and an attempt to memorise the lyrics in anticipation. Personally it's kind of amusing that she gets the True Rng attacks with her Black Icicles. Genuine, authentic russian roulette gameplay. Crisp design, that pale ice-blue is a nice touch.

Non-Reunion:

Mandragora - my wonderful soggiest poor little meow meow dripping mud n dirt n blood everywhere <3 Ain't she great! Now that Yato can go visorless, a Masked slot is available! Make it so, Hypergryph. Sometimes self-care is skewering Victorians to instil fear as catharsis for trauma-inducing abuse that more-or-less ended one of her lives that she crawled out of like a more bedraggled version of Kill Bill's The Bride. Unhinged, justifiably-founded but now-disproportionate revenge is just fun. Wear your wrath like a mantle. Anyhow it's as gutting as intended that she's the one that most cared for her troops and the Taran peoples; for overturning the Victorian nobility and their policies. So it'd be nice to see an actual return after they let her vanish in Londinium. Also HornDragora excellent dynamics Ya - Ohohohohoho. Hypergryph really love making characters just for me~ They deserve to burn Yan to ashes, absolutely. Not the traitor bitch-in-chief Sui. Oh, you're mad that you got betrayed by the insects whom you taught to kill gods? Really now? That bastard pulled a Zaaro and wants to be the last one standing, to curse Yan with his rebirth and outlive those He betrayed. Fuck that. Ya is essentially bleeding out after being woken from stasis by the shitforbrain Shanhaizhong idiots yet doing all the cool wuxia villain shit in a heartbroken rampage to bring Sui back simply for Them to burn the world and die together as kin once more. Wonderful! And though I don't recall if Fire Emblem: Awakening did have that same exact dynamic between Grima and the Grimleal, I adore that scenario of 'hey you fucked me over in order to have the end of the world summoned for you BUT guess what? You die too, bitch. No world domination for you filth either!' (Heroes recently gave us the true Laser-Guided Karma moment with that) They carved away specific slivers of time for Their pocket dimension home to keep Their cherished moments away from humanity and got woken up by nobodies, for little of purpose. YA01, what a legendary codex tag. The boss gimmick was an interesting way of doing the clone tactic but damn those additional spawns if you let Them move too far forward. Overall I like Them a normal amount, see. Pancho Salas - This guy was ridiculous, what a goofy Bond villain parody. Lovely action film setpiece of a map fending off his armoured missile boat and those waverider casters from a chewed-up luxury yacht in an artificial sea. Taking his boat down only to face the absolute brick wall of an anchor-wielding seadog with a metal arm, damn. Dossoles Holiday was much more fun than expected even with its Deep Water/Tides mechanics. Kaschey - Not exactly a favourite, but. They made a very good punching bag of an Actual Evil Bastard. That scummy method of self-propagation allowing him to be all "Ursus is MY plaything and I shall continue to grease its wheels with the blood of all those my Glorious Empire shall oppress!" was one hell of a reveal to throw into that interlude, huh? And that colour palette he maintains across his victims - the austere, harsh grays and black against white with dashes of crimson: it's the bloodstains amidst the Ursus Tundra echoing his presence. That's a sublime and careful coordination, yet more of Hypergryph's mindful consideration and planning behind characters, behind lore themes & motifs. Zumama, during Great Chief Returns - I CAN BEAT GAVIAL'S STRENGTH WITH MY ENGINEERING I PROMMY, GODDAMMIT (can't, lmao) Tomimi, during Great Chief Returns - I CAN KEEP GAVIAL WITH ME IN ACAHUALLA FOREVER I PROMMY, GODDAMMIT (can't, lmao. Gets tail-spanked, lmao) Jetpack Thief/Jetman from IS2 simply because the Arts Drones are more of a threat than his dumb arse. Stall, he hops into flight when we're given Anti-Air Defense tiles boosting ranged atk, and when he lands you should have a burst dps melee ready to grind him. One of the safest Floor 3 bosses if rngesus has allowed it. IS3's Pathshaper gets a shout here too for being a hilariously-deletable non-event of a Floor 3 boss.

On the more passive antagonism side of things would be ones like:

Degenbrecher (all sides knew it's just a stalling game where Enciodes is far more antagonistic towards the Very Shitty Clan Leaders & Great Elder, yet Sharp actually held out sparring with her) The Last Steam Knight (a warping of conviction and duty beyond death that defends a final bastion "You are not permitted to stain MY Victoria! Trespasser!") Dusk ("Hey what the fuck are you looking for me for? Get in the painting idiots. Wait, you lot have too much trauma to deal with that? Lame. Why's my annoying big sister here too?!") Ho'olheyak (she's not evil, and not the arc's villain, just as she said; but her manipulation of various parties during Dorothy's Vision/Lonetrail and taunting of both Saria and Muelsyse was enough for us to find delightful)

Uh... Uh.... Kazuma??? holy shit im crying. Kazuma? I'm about to scream KAZUMA????

Holy shit I can't.. I'm just so fucking...,. DAMMIT I'm throwing a hissy fit right now. Because it's not like this wasn't a possibility. It's not like this was undeserved or unfair. It just fucking happened like that. Just like that!?? I'm actually feeling anger at Yato for dragging him into this shit. If he died he should have died beside Bishomon! I can't even imagine what she's... what she's going to do. We didn't even get to see her. Her most important person just up and died while she was away. I'm SCREAMING. This isn't fair oh my godddd

It almost felt casual. Like the narrative was like and... nows a good time to kill Kazuma. It did show a different variation of the secret though... this peaceful moving on. My god this hurts so bad. ahhh

and in a sick parallel to the Kazuma death happening away from his loved one, I think Yato might have just died off-screen. I mean who even knows. I'm in tears guys. This is so fucked up. Brilliant but I'm so fucking sad right now. This is the newest low. The actual fucking lowest this series can bring me. Fathers doing something to hold on and Yato's getting eaten by Ayakashi so much that Hiyori 'probably also really dead' Iki can't smell him.
