The Fifth Season, N.K. Jemisin [started 11/03, finished 01/23] This was originally a dnf from 2023 that i decided to pick up again. My entry point into her work was The City We Became and fell in love with her voice. With Fifth Season, however, I felt like I loved parts of the story but didn’t fall in love with the sum of the whole. I will go more into why in the tags because it will touch on spoilers (mildly!) I still gave it 4⭐️ in storygraph. — The Moth Presents: All These Wonders, Catherine Burns [started 01/05, finished 01/31] I bought this collection from Half Price so long ago, I’ve forgotten what drew me in. Probably because of the Neil Gaiman foreword. I had not heard of The Moth so I went into this blind. Some of the stories made me wish I heard it live and feel the story breathe and beat with the audience. 4.25⭐️ in storygraph.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Flavorful Origins, Netflix [started: 09/28, finished 01/04] I watched s1/s2 in 2023 at various pts of the fall/winter. Finally wrapped up s3 in January and caught up. Unsure if its a complete series or ongoing, but I do hope to return to the series in the future if they do upload more seasons. This series reminds me of the YT channel Liziqi, where they take one ingredient and unravel the techniques and related dishes by region. A great palate cleanser amongst all the other shows I typically gravitate towards. — Last Twilight, GMMTV on YT [started 11/10, finished 01/26] The only show I watched in real time, as it premiered week by week. If I solely focus on the January episodes, for the sake of this post, I can’t say I was happy with the way the final act was handled. If I look back on the whole of it, it’s still really special to me. In fact, there are episodes that still stand as the very best in television, THE BEST. Still licking the wounds inflicted by the finale, though. — Moving, Hulu [started 01/08, finished 01/30] This lured me in by process of dash osmosis, which is the very best brand of entry pt. I am O B S E S S E D with this show, I am singing its praises! It soothed the scars left by the show Heroes. Amongst all the action sequences, espionage, and high school drama is this huge heart beating loud and strong. Lee Mihyun, the way I love youuuuu, the character you are 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼 Guys, she saved January for me.
Tumblr media
Chevalier, Hulu [watched on 01/14] The short runtime (well, short for the current landscape of cinema) did give me pause. I think some of the emotional beats could have been deepened if given 20 more min of his involvement in the rebellion. I think I wanted the betrayal to really cut me to the bone, but it felt like a papercut. — BlacKkKlansman [watched on 1/31] At this point, I would follow John David Washington’s career to the very end. I love his natural charisma. I want to see him go thru alllll the situations and wish this movie gave him a lot more room to breathe. Laura Harrier took me by surprise, portraying the BSU president Patrice. The story came to a very mild end and felt very tame, but the suspense held its own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever), Noah Kahan [first time listening] I originally learned about him when I was in my Lizzy McAlpine hyperfixation last year and heard she was a feature in one of his songs. And then I discovered a duet Noah did with Hozier and knew I had to spend time this month to sit down and really digest his album. WHOA MAN, this is one of those formative moments when music perfectly aligns with my current state of being. Take that as you will. Current top 5: Come Over, Strawberry Wine, Northern Attitude, Halloween, Your Needs My Needs — Natasha, Pierre, & the Great Comet of 1812 [relistening] what else is there to say, this is a mandatory yearly listen when it becomes below 0 outside. When I saw this show live, it was a January date as well so this relisten really got me spiralling. These two albums got me Feeling 🧍🏻‍♀️ on my walks.
Tumblr media
Minecraft [game, on Switch] I got this game as a christmas gift and was where I spend most of my waking hours outside of work. I enjoyed watch MC streams on twitch and knew I would enjoy playing on my own. I get it now, I am soooooo late to this game. I think and dream Minecraft. My mountain house and harbor builds? Immaculate. They basic, but immaculate. Now I’m in my fishing era, esp when I have Stick Season playing in the background (nothing else mattered when the sun was rising and the song The View Between Villages played in the bg, it was a religious experience). — Lethal Company [game, on Twitch/YT] My entire month has been hopping from one stream to another, lobby after lobby. This game is so fun to watch and witness how all the mods evolved as time went on. I don’t think I myself would play the game myself, as I am a bit of a scaredy cat, but watching my fav groups play has been a highlight.

And finally, to complete my yearly game posts, here's what I plan on playing in the year 2024:
1. Assemble With Care - a short little game I should be able to knock out in a few hours but I picked it up in a bundle and I have wanted to play it so I will try to knock it out this year.
2. I'm more than half way done with Baldur's Gate 3 but I likely will be playing it through January. I hope to finish it at least once before P3R.
3. Bloodborne - help.
4. Borderlands 2 - since I had such a blast playing Borderlands with my boyfriend this year, I'm looking forward to giving this game a second chance and hopefully enjoying it much more.
5. Borderlands 3 - a little less hopeful for this one, since I haven't heard much good about it, but might as well knock out the main franchise.
6. Boyfriend Dungeon - I just got this for Christmas and I'm excited for the concept of romancing my weapons :)
7. I'm also more than halfway through Catherine, so I also intend to finish that in the coming month.
8. Cat Museum - something cute and short I picked up on mega sale and want to make an effort to play this year.
9. The Coffin of Andy and Leyley - I actually have no idea what this game is about or if I'll like it but it was a gift so dammit I'll play it.
10. Dragon's Dogma 2 - Dragon's Dogma is easily in my top 10 games of all time, and I am SO hype for this game. The only downside is it's coming in March, and the first quarter of 2024 is pretty PACKED with games for me.
11. Etrian Odyssey - because I never finished it when I owned it on DS but I'm in my Atlus Games era rn so
12. Far: Lone Sails - I was drawn to this game for the art and it seems like a quick little experience of a game.
13. Final Fantasy 16 DLC - blanketing over the currently available DLC and the up and coming DLC.
14. Hades - a carry over from 2023's list but THIS WILL BE THE YEAR (maybe)
15. Haven - I don't think (?) this game is very long but it looks very heartwarming so I'm here for it this year.
16. Little Nightmares 2 - another fairly short game that I have no reason not to play, especially when I'm obsessed with the first one.
17. Little Nightmares 3 - I don't know what the release date is yet but like Borderlands let's try to close out a franchise!
18. Metaphor: ReFantazio - it doesn't even have a release date and I'm already excited about it.
21. Nier Automata - another carry over from 2023, but I have a good feeling about it this year.
19. NEO: The World Ends With You - I hear only good things about this game but I will be walking into it 98% blind.
20. Nightingale - Idk how much I'll actually play this game but my friend and I have been watching its development for years and we are READY
22. Nier Replicant - I watched a friend play some of this and it looked fun, and since I saw it was free on PS plus... why not.
23. Octopath Traveler - this is to feed my JRPG addiction but break up some of my Atlus obsession
24. Opus: Echo of Starsong - This was a gift like 2 years ago and I really want to play it through this year.
25. Persona 3 Reload - I ALREADY TOOK VACATION FOR IT IM SO READY 38 MORE DAYS
26. Persona 4 Arena - Because I think it's the only readily available Persona game I haven't played yet.
27. Sea of Stars - I'm more than half through this too, I stopped playing it to play Tactica so I'll be finishing this soon as well.
28. Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne - I put a fair amount of time into it this year, and I adore this game. I'm finishing it next year.
29. Shin Megami Tensei 5 - for real this year, I promise (🤞)
31. Undertale - why have I not played this? Why did it sit on my list last year untouched? Why did I install it and never play it? The world may never know.
30. Soul Hackers 2 - because again, I'm in my Atlus Games era and I bought it this year so time to play it.
32. Untitled Goose Game - for casual hijinks
I'm even more ambitious this year than last year and thats without knowing even half of whats to be released in 2024 sooo wish me luck.

End of 2022 Book Stats
Because I like crunching numbers and I think some of you might be interested? Maybe I’m just flattering myself…
Yearly total: 147 + 2
 rereads DNFs: 4 Queer books: 52 (35%) Authors of colour: 31 (21%) Books by women: 88 (60%) Books by nonbinary/genderqueer folk: 9 (6%) Canadian authors: 15 (10%) Off the TBR shelves: 30 (20%)
Compared to my 2021 stats, my percentages of queer books (subject matter and/or author), nonbinary authors, and authors of colour are holding roughly steady. My female and Canadian authors percentages are down. I also always try to set a goal for reading more classics and poetry. This year I read 9 (6%) and last year I was at 6 (3.7%). Success!
At the start of the year, I posted 22 reading goals for the year. I read all but one book off the list (Night Watch by Sarah Waters)! I also wanted to read at least one book off my TBR shelves per month (done) and increase my percentage of authors of colour from 22% (not done, basically holding steady). I was also hoping to have read more Canadian authors than I did, but at the same time, so much Canadian fiction just does not grab my interest.
Top Fiction (Not ranked)
Persuasion - Jane Austen
Babel - R.F. Kuang
The Mummy! - Jane Webb
A Strange and Stubborn Endurance - Foz Meadows
Semiosis - Sue Burke
Top Non-Fiction (Not ranked)
Hasidic Tales of the Holocaust - Yaffa Eliach
Highway of Tears - Jessica McDiarmid
1491 - Charles Mann
The Emperor of Scent - Chandler Burr
Let’s Do It! - Bob Stanley
Longest book

: The Fabliaux, translated by Nathaniel Durbin
Best queer book: A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows
Most Impressed By:
The Emperor of Scent - Chandler Burr
Katzenjammer - Francesca Zappia
The Escapement - Lavie Tidhar
The Wolf Den - Elodie Harper
Hasidic Tales of the Holocaust - Yaffa Eliach
Hot Moon - Alan Smale
Biggest Disappointments:

High Times in the Low Parliament - Kelly Robson
Pride, Prejudice and Peril - Katie Oliver
Attrib. and other Stories - Eley Williams
The Monsters We Defy - Leslye Penelope
Epically Earnest - Molly Horan
Did I beat 2021? No.
Did I beat my Best Year Ever? No. That would be 2021.
Did I read more classics? Yes!
Did I read more Canadians? No.
Did I whittle my TBR shelves down any? No. I hauled 102 books, most of which were gifts, free copies from publishers, or hand-me-downs, and I read 30. This gives me a net gain of 72 books. There are also 29 ARCs on my floor. This is, as I’m fond of saying, fine and not at all worrying.
Was it a good reading year? It was fine? I read a lot of good books that weren’t particularly memorable, and a lot of okay books that barely were. And I kind of burned out halfway through the year and had to slow my pace to keep my interest in reading going.
Breakdowns by Month

2023 Movie Odyssey
I keep submitting this later and later! Anyways, as is tradition on this blog, this is the complete list of films I saw for the first time in their entirety over the last calendar year. They are listed in the order of completion and with a respective rating out of ten from me. Each rating (my ratings system and eligibility rules are explained here - which I really need to update) is based on my personal imdb rating. All half-points are rounded down.
Mid-late January was mostly virtual viewing for the Sundance Film Festival. March was defined almost entirely by my blog’s annual 31 Days of Oscar marathon (in which I limit myself to watching films nominated for an Academy Award or Honorary Academy Award winning films). May was entirely dedicated to viewing submissions for Viet Film Fest - which contributed heavily to the amount of short films (in somewhat-related news, I have finally completed viewing of the entire original Popeye short film series, an endeavor that took several years).
For the first time since I started taking records in 2012, I recorded not a single 10/10 rating.
In sum, I saw 226 films that were new to me in 2021 (up from 207 in 2022). 111 of those were features (films defined as forty-one minutes or longer, a record low since I've been keeping records); 115 were short films (forty minutes or shorter; a record and the first time short films surpassed features).
For the second straight year running, I failed on my yearly objective to watch more pre-1980 films than 1980 and after - this is to ensure that I my viewing habits are well-rounded, chronologically. Among features, I saw thirteen more features released 1980 and after. Adding both features and shorts, the deficit was fifty (a record, up from last year's count of nineteen).
What follows is the entire list of the 2023 Movie Odyssey:

The listed below is an excerpt from a current edition of Bitcoin Magazine Pro, Bitcoin Magazine's premium markets newsletter. To be amongst the very first to get these insights and other on-chain bitcoin market analysis directly to your inbox, subscribe now Liquidity Is In The Driver Seat By far, among the most crucial consider any market is liquidity-- which can be specified in several methods. In this piece, we cover some methods to think of international liquidity and how it affects bitcoin. One top-level view of liquidity is that of reserve banks' balance sheets. As reserve banks have actually ended up being the minimal purchaser of their own sovereign financial obligations, mortgage-backed securities and other monetary instruments, this has actually provided the marketplace with more liquidity to purchase properties even more up the threat curve. A seller of federal government bonds is a purchaser of a various property. When the system has more reserves, cash, capital, and so on (nevertheless one wishes to explain it), they need to go someplace. In lots of manner ins which has actually caused among the biggest increases in property appraisals internationally over the last 12 years, accompanying the brand-new age of quantitative easing and financial obligation money making experiments. Reserve bank balance sheets throughout the United States, China, Japan and the European Union reached over $31 trillion previously this year, which is almost 10 X from the levels back in2003 This was currently a growing pattern for years, however the 2020 financial and financial policies took balance sheets to record levels in a time of international crisis. Since previously this year, we've seen a peak in reserve bank properties and a worldwide effort to unwind these balance sheets. The peak in the S&P 500 index was simply 2 months prior to all of the quantitative tightening up (QT) efforts we're enjoying play out today. Not the only aspect that drives cost and appraisals in the market, bitcoin's cost and cycle has actually been impacted in the very same method. The yearly rate-of-change peak in significant reserve banks' properties took place simply weeks prior to bitcoin's very first push to brand-new all-time highs around $60,000, back in March2021 Whether it's the direct effect and impact of reserve banks or the marketplace's understanding of that effect, it's been a clear macro driving force of all markets over the last 18 months. There is an international effort to unwind reserve bank balance sheets At a market cap of simply portions of international wealth, bitcoin has actually dealt with the liquidity steamroller that's hammered every other market worldwide. If we utilize the structure that bitcoin is a liquidity sponge (more so than other properties)-- taking in all of the excess financial supply and liquidity in the system in times of crisis growth-- then the substantial contraction of liquidity will cut the other method. Combined with bitcoin's inelastic illiquid supply profile of 77.15% with a large variety of HODLers of last hope, the unfavorable effect on cost is amplified a lot more than other properties. One of the prospective motorists of liquidity in the market is the quantity of cash in the system, determined as international M2 in USD terms. M2 cash supply consists of money, examining deposits, cost savings deposits and other liquid kinds of currency. Both cyclical growths in worldwide M2 supply have actually taken place throughout the growths of international reserve bank properties and growths of bitcoin cycles. We see bitcoin as a financial inflation hedge (or liquidity hedge) instead of one versus a "CPI" (or cost) inflation hedge. Monetary debasement, more systems in the system in time, has actually driven lots of possession classes greater. Bitcoin is by far the best-designed property in our view and one of the best-performing possessions to neutralize the future pattern of continuous financial debasement, cash supply growth and main bank property growth.
It's uncertain for how long a material decrease in the Fed's balance sheet can really last. We've just seen an approximate 2% decrease from a $ 8.96 trillion balance sheet issue at its peak. Ultimately, we see the balance sheet broadening as the only choice to keep the whole financial system afloat, however up until now, the marketplace has actually undervalued how far the Fed has actually wanted to go. The absence of feasible financial policy alternatives and the inevitability of this continuous balance sheet growth is among the greatest cases for bitcoin's long-run success. What else can reserve banks and financial policy makers carry out in future times of economic downturn and crisis? -
This year I read 32 books, which was below my yearly average and my set goal for the year in reading challenge. But considering my new life (post 2hr commute and with 2 children and much more reading for work), above 30 books is going to be my new PAR, like getting more than 100 in bowling. I’m happy with it.
I read one less book (thanks Ulysses) but more pages (thanks Ulysses) than 2020.
This is the first year that I actually reached a balance, reading exactly the same number of female and male authors. And exactly as many fiction as nonfiction!
Turns out I didn’t pay for a single digital (ebook) read all year actually... they all came from the Library, NetGalley, or Prime. That’s been a goal for awhile now as well... if I want a book I’m buying it in print (to own it) or I’ll wait for the library hold.
Continuing my trends, I read mostly new (frontlist) books this year - published over the last two years, except for a handful. There’s so many amazing new books that I’m just trying to keep up. And as usual, all my favorite fiction is from female writers.
If any book ever catches your interest, I hope you follow through in finding a way to acquire and read it - check out my reviews (I write a review for every book I read) and let me know what you’re reading these days. Read on!
My top 3 reads from 2021:
Favorite Fiction:
Such A Fun Age
Laserwriter II
No One Is Talking About This
Favorite NonFiction:
Gone to the Woods
Why Fish Don’t Exist
Fulfillment
Honorable Mentions:
How Lucky
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous
The Smash-Up

Meet the New Yorkers Who Say They’ve Given Up on the Subways
by Jose Martinez, March 1, 2021
Florin Petrisor swapped the No. 7 train for an electric scooter and never looked back.
Claire McLeveighn started walking to work and hasn’t been on the subway since last March.
Isaac Himmelman began the pandemic without a bike or a car but now he’s “the proud owner of both.”
They are among the millions of New Yorkers who once rode the subway daily, but who, one year into the pandemic, have found other ways to get around — while largely staying away from the transit system.
“It’s the freedom of riding the scooter wherever I want, at any time and it’s much more reliable,” said Petrisor, 40, a dog walker who commutes between Queens and Manhattan on an electric scooter he bought last March for $1,200. “This is how I look at it: I used to buy the unlimited MetroCard every month, but with this scooter, I have gotten my money’s worth and then some in 10 months.”
MTA data shows subway ridership stayed north of five million on weekdays throughout the first week of March 2020 as COVID-19 began to climb. As late as March 6 — five days after the first confirmed coronavirus case in the city emerged — there were 5.2 million daily trips.
But it marked a fleeting ridership peak that, within weeks, would crumble by more than 90% as the pandemic took hold and the subway system turned into what one commuter described last April as “an underground ghost town.”
While ridership has rebounded to nearly 1.8 million trips a day — or about 30% of what it was prior to the pandemic — the MTA is still trying to win back straphangers who have continued to stay away from the subway in large numbers.
The collapse in ridership has also forced the transit agency to repeatedly seek billions of dollars in emergency federal aid as officials call for more police amid a disturbing spate of crimes in a less-trafficked system.
Business leaders say the return of safe and efficient subways is crucial to the city’s economic recovery, and hailed the recent restoration of overnight service to all but two hours daily as a good sign.
Meanwhile, some transportation advocates say there’s a bigger opportunity to transform how New Yorkers get around: On Monday, Transportation Alternatives released a report calling for 25% of city car space to be dedicated to use by people by 2025.
‘Everything Changed’
Asked how the subway can regain riders, MTA officials pointed to cleaning and disinfecting efforts in the subway, along with mask-wearing requirements.
“We are pleased that millions of New Yorkers are once again relying on public transportation on a daily basis,” said Sarah Feinberg, interim president of New York City Transit. “Our commitment to providing a safe and dependable way for customers to get where they need to go remains steadfast.”
But the MTA must contend with riders reluctant to return not only because of safety concerns, but who have moved on to other ways of getting around.
“It was my sole method of transportation before, but once the pandemic started, everything changed,” said Meghan Addison, 31, who used to get to work by subway from Brooklyn to Manhattan. “I just don’t foresee myself using transit unless it’s in the winter or for longer distances.”
Addison, who is now working remotely for her job at a tech company, travels almost entirely by bicycle and said that’s unlikely to change even after COVID-19 is under control.
“There are just so many things you can’t prepare for or predict in New York,” she said. “There is something really liberating about not having to rely on a subway.”
McLeveighn, who previously commuted on the No. 4 train from The Bronx to Lower Manhattan, now treks more than a mile from her home in Kingsbridge to an office in Morris Park on days when she isn’t working remotely.
“It’s a good [long] walk,” she said. “But after having been in a lockdown, it’s kind of enjoyable to walk to the office.”
‘People Aren’t Rushing Back’
Edgardo Rivera, 42, has relied on his yearly Citi Bike membership to commute from Bushwick to his job in DUMBO, Brooklyn, saying the 25-minute ride is “for my health” and tops what would be a 45-minute trip by subway.
“We’re a city of commuters and people aren’t rushing back,” he said. “There is a big mental hurdle and you’re talking to a native New Yorker who’s not afraid of the train system, like someone from out of town might be.”
The number of bicycle trips across East River bridges has gone up, according to city Department of Transportation data, along with usage of Citi Bike, the bike-sharing network.
More New Yorkers are buying automobiles, too, as THE CITY reported last summer. In four of the boroughs, the number of vehicle registrations increased by nearly 40 percent between August and October.
Beatrice Lors-Rousseau, 33, of Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, said she has not been on the subway since going on maternity leave in December 2019, choosing instead to travel by car.
“We’re thinking about our exposure to others,” said Lors-Rousseau, 33, whose parents live with her family.
Rivera said elected officials, the MTA and employers need to “be on the same page” about encouraging people to eventually return to the subway.
“They’ve got to do something about saving mass transit,” he said. “New York is a city that relies on mass transit whether there is a pandemic or not.”

The Real Michigan MAC Trophy
Tumblr media
Hello friends, we’re back to round out the hypothetical histories of the real life three-way rivalry trophies. Before we begin, if you’d like to check out my previous posts on the Florida Cup, Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, or the Beehive Boot, click the links provided.
You probably saw this one coming, today’s the day for the Michigan MAC Trophy. What the name lacks in imagination it makes up for in specificity. The Michigan MAC Trophy is handed out every year to the head-to-head winner between Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, and Western Michigan.
It’s a relatively new trophy, and has only been given out since 2005. But what if we wind the clock back to the beginning of the three-way rivalry, how would things be different?
The rules of the Michigan MAC Trophy are the same as the ones governing the Service Academies. The winner will retain possession of the trophy until another team claims it. In the event of a three-way tiebreaker, where all teams hold a 1-1 record against each other, the Trophy remains where it is.
So let’s jump in our time machines and head back to the beginning.
-
The proper year to begin giving out the Michigan MAC Trophy has to be 1974, the year all three schools began to play each other on an annual basis. There had been a handful of years when this had happened before, in 1907 and in the late 20′s, but for the most part Eastern and Western Michigan had nothing to do with each other.
For the first three-quarters of the 20th Century, WMU and CMU would play on a near-annual basis, as would CMU and EMU, but there was little to no overlap between the Eagles and the Broncos.
This makes more sense when you remember the conference situation. The MAC was founded all the way back in 1946, making it by far the oldest of the G5 conferences, predating the FBS designation by decades in fact. However, Western Michigan was the only school from the state in the conference for decades. The Broncos had middling success in the league, and were mostly overshadowed by higher powered opponents like Miami of Ohio.
Central and Eastern Michigan spent this time in lower divisions. It wasn’t until 1971 that those universities joined the MAC, but it took even longer for their football teams to get all of their ducks in a row to move up to D-I. CMU football officially joined the Mid-American in 1975, and EMU followed the year after.
However, it was in 1974, just before both schools joined the MAC, that EMU and WMU finally began playing yearly to close the loop and begin the three-way rivalry.
CMU Leads the Pack: 1974-1991
It was the perfect time to move up if you were a Central Michigan fan. The Chippewas won the Division II National Championship in the 1974 season. Central Michigan had been led by head coach Roy Kramer since 1967. It was Kramer who built Central Michigan into a D-II powerhouse and perfectly timed their jump. In their first three years in the MAC, CMU went 25-7-1. They didn’t claim any conference titles, but finished 2nd in 1975 and 1977.
Roy Kramer was replaced by longtime replacement Herb Deromedi in 1978. Central Michigan went from strength to strength, as Deromedi proved to be the perfect match. CMU finished ‘78 with a 9-2 record, finishing 2nd in the MAC once again. The next two years, the Chippewas would win the conference. In 1979, Central Michigan went undefeated with a 10-0-1 record. They didn’t play in a bowl or finish in the AP Poll because that’s just how things were back then.
CMU wouldn’t win the MAC again for another decade, but they were a player in the conference race every year and completely dominated their rivals. The Chippewas wouldn’t suffer a losing season through the entirety of Deromedi’s 16 year tenure.
The 1980′s weren’t as successful in Kalamazoo or Ypsilanti, but neither team was a real bottom-feeder.
Western Michigan likely assumed they’d be able to run roughshod over their newcomer brother programs, but were usurped. 1974 was the final year in Bill Doolittle’s decade long tenure, and the largely successful WMU coach faceplanted with a 3-8 record after seven winning seasons in his previous nine years.
Doolittle’s replacement was Elliot Uzelac (who would later coach Navy in the late 80′s). Uzelac did a good job for the most part. After a dreadful 1-10 first season, he coached the Broncos to a 37-29 record from 1976 to 1981. Jack Harbaugh coached Western Michigan from 1982 to 1986, but after a 2nd place finish in his first year WMU got worse each year.
Al Molde came in to take over from Harbaugh in 1987. Molde had coached his way up from D-III and quickly got the Broncos straightened out. In 1988, Western Michigan went 9-3, winning their first MAC title since 1966 but lost to Fresno State in the California Bowl. WMU remained a contender for the rest of Molde’s decade in Kalamazoo, finishing above .500 for the next six seasons.
Eastern Michigan hadn’t been a very successful D-II program, so hopes weren’t exactly high as they transitioned to the higher level. Ed Chlebek actually managed a surprise 8-3 record in 1977, but then left immediately for Boston College. Replacement Mike Stock was horrible, and he was fired only 3 games into the 1982 season after accruing a 6-38-1 record.
EMU hired Jim Harkema in 1983. Harkema was previously the head man at Grand Valley State in D-II and had led the Lakers to three conference titles in his ten years at the helm. Harkema would spend another ten years in Ypsilanti and would become the Hurons’ best coach since moving up to D-I.
It took some time to get things going, but by year 1986 Eastern Michigan had a winning record. In ‘87, EMU had their best year in modern history, going 10-2, earning their first every (and currently only) MAC Championship and a victory over San Jose State in the California Bowl. The Hurons finished with a winning record in the next two years, finishing 2nd in the MAC both times.
The magic didn’t last, and Harkema resigned midway through the 1992 season after several losing campaigns. The Hurons, now renamed the Eagles, would enter a brutal period of decline after this point.

Michigan MAC Trophy Record Central Michigan: 15 Western Michigan: 2 Eastern Michigan: 1
Despite the relative parity between the programs, the Trophy was nearly always in Mount Pleasant. Central Michigan owned their rivals in the first two decades since they joined the MAC. The Chippewas would have won the Michigan MAC Trophy in the first 15 of 18 seasons since 1974. They never lost it for more than a year and never once kept it via tiebreaker.
It’s curious how dominant this stretch was considering that both Western and Eastern Michigan had periods of success, especially in the late 80′s. CMU still managed to outfox their rivals on almost every occasion. EMU didn’t manage to win the Trophy in 1987, their only 10 win season ever, because one of their two losses was to Central.
The Broncos only managed to win the Trophy twice. The first, in 1976 was during a down year for the Chippewas, and the second was WMU’s first 9 win season in program history.
-
Western Michigan Strikes Back: 1992-2004
Jim Harkema and Herb Deromedi retired in 1992 and 1993 respectively. Harkema has been Eastern Michigan’s best coach since moving up to D-I. Deromedi was the MAC’s winningest head coach of all time before Frank Solich passed him last season.
Neither team was able to easily transition away from their best head coaches in recent memory. EMU was hit particularly hard. The Eagles went into a tailspin and would only have one winning season (6-5 in 1995) for the next two decades. CMU won the MAC in Dick Flynn’s first year as head coach in 1994, but then fell off into irrelevance for the next decade.
Western Michigan took charge of the rivalry. WMU remained strong under Al Molde, who stayed on as head coach until his retirement in 1996. Molde’s replacement, Gary Darnell, kept up the momentum at first. The Broncos went 31-15 in Darnell’s first four seasons with two MAC West Division titles.
Western Michigan began to flag around the turn of the decade. The Broncos were a dreadful 15-31 from 2001-2004, a perfectly horrific turnaround compared to the first half of Darnell’s tenure. Darnell was fired after a 1-10 collapse in ‘04.
Tumblr media
Michigan MAC Trophy Record Central Michigan: 18 Western Michigan: 11 Eastern Michigan: 2
Western Michigan was easily the strongest of the Michigan MAC programs in the 1990′s. From Al Molde to Gary Darnell, the Broncos routinely bested their rivals, especially Eastern Michigan.
Central Michigan was able to keep up with their rivals in the mid-90′s, but the Chippewas really fell off under Mike DeBord in the early 2000′s. Eastern Michigan was an afterthought for the most part, though they did manage to win one Trophy in 2004 when all three programs were in the toilet.
-
The Real Trophy Era: 2005-2019
So now we’re back to the beginning. In 2005 the *real* Michigan MAC Trophy began to pass between the three schools in that state in that conference. It was also somewhat of a turning point once more.
In 2004 Brian Kelly came to Central Michigan, reversing the fortunes of the Chippewas, who had been struggling for most of the previous decade. In 2006, CMU went 10-4 with a MAC Championship, which Kelly relayed into a job at Cincinnati. Central Michigan replaced Kelly with another ace hire in Butch Jones, who kept up the winning ways.
CMU won a second straight MAC title in 2007 and a third in 2009. The ‘09 season was a standout 12-2 campaign that saw the Chippewas finish 23rd in the AP Poll, their only final top 25 ranking. Following this extremely successful year, Jones was also poached by Cincinnati following Kelly’s departure to Notre Dame. Central Michigan became a middling program in the MAC West under first Dan Enos and then John Bonamego. Jim McElwain was hired to coach CMU starting in 2019 and went 8-6 in his first year.
Bill Cubit was hired by Western Michigan in 2005 and did a solid job for most of his 8 years in Kalamazoo. Cubit took the Broncos to three bowls, more than WMU had ever seen in total before that point. However, Cubit never was able to take the next step, and following a disappointing 4-8 season in 2012 Cubit was relieved of duty.
Cubit was replaced by PJ Fleck, who quickly transformed Western Michigan into the top program in the MAC. In 2016, the Broncos screamed out to finish the season 13-0 with a MAC Championship and the conference’s second ever berth in a NY6 Bowl. The dream ended in Dallas as #12 WMU lost to Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl, but it was still the best ever season any Michigan MAC school has ever had. Fleck left following his triumphant ‘16 season. Tim Lester hasn’t done quite as good a job, but has kept Western Michigan relevant in the years since the breakout 2016 season.
Eastern Michigan was a different story. The Eagles were one of the worst teams in FBS football for most of the 2000′s. EMU was a bottom-feeder under Jeff Woodruff, Jeff Genck, and Ron English. They were considered a lost cause when they hired Chris Crieghton.
Creighton was a turnaround veteran, having clawed his way up from NAIA to D-III to non-scholarship FCS. It took a few years, but he even turned around Eastern Michigan. In 2016 the Eagles finished the year 7-6, their first winning season since 1995, and their first bowl since 1987. EMU went bowling in 2018 and 2019 as well.

Michigan MAC Trophy Record Central Michigan: 23 Western Michigan: 17 Eastern Michigan: 6
Since the introduction of the real rivalry trophy, the standings have been much more competitive. Despite mostly being godawful in the 2000′s, Eastern Michigan somehow managed to keep (and retain) the trophy on four occasions.
Despite good seasons, WMU was unable to claim the trophy often during Bill Cubit’s tenure, but have done well for themselves since PJ Fleck came into town. The Broncos have won five of the last six Trophies. CMU remains a constant in the discussion, though they’ve only won five Trophies since the introduction of the real thing.

Prehistory: 1902-1973
I’m putting the other games on here just in case you were curious to see the full history of all three games.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Michigan MAC Trophy Record Western Michigan: 49 Central Michigan: 42 Eastern Michigan: 19
As you can tell this isn’t quite a fair comparison. There were decades separating EMU-WMU games so for the most part the Michigan MAC Trophy would have been simply decided by the CMU-WMU game.
The Broncos definitely dominated the series before 1974, but this is to be expected when they were the only D-I program of the three for several decades.
Michigan MAC Trophy Record (Without Ties) Central Michigan: 40 Western Michigan: 38 Eastern Michigan: 14
Without ties, Central Michigan regains its lead in the all-time standings. The Chippewas’ complete dominance in the 70′s and 80′s came without a single tie, giving them a slight edge over rival Western Michigan who benefited from 11 ties in the history of the series. The Eagles remain at the bottom. Can’t be helped.
-
I think it’s great that these smaller FBS teams have these interesting and unique rivalries and a Trophy series like this. I hope they continue to do it until the sun burns out. The MAC is one of those underfunded and low-resource conferences that soldiers on as the second choice underneath the Big Ten, providing real college football to the Midwest.
I’m cautiously optimistic about the future of the Michigan MAC Trophy. Obviously it’s got a stronger foundation than either the Beehive Boot or the Florida Cup, since every team actually plays each other every season. The only danger I can imagine is that one or more of these schools eventually drops down a level or drops football altogether for budget reasons. Lets hope it doesn’t happen.
-
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed this little series of mine. Maybe I’ll do a few more exploring other rivalries that don’t have a trophy. Stay tuned!
