"It is fitting that I'm beginning a new notebook up here. New surroundings and new ideas, a new beginning. Fresh air." These are the opening lines of the journal kept by the narrator of Daniel Kehlmann's spellbinding new novel: the record of the seven days that he, his wife, and his four-year-old daughter spend in a house they have rented in the mountains of Germany—a house that thwarts the expectations of his recollection and seems to defy the very laws of physics. The narrator is eager to finish a screenplay, entitled Marriage, for a sequel to the movie that launched his career, but something he cannot explain is undermining his convictions and confidence, a process he is recording in this account of the uncanny events that unfold as he tries to understand what, exactly, is happening around him—and in himself.

"Should Have Left"

Just finished watching You Should Have Left, and... it was fine. It was a good movie up until the end but.. firstly, there was literally zero reason for the age gap relationship, let alone such a large one. The two of them could have been the exact same age and nothing would have detracted from the movie, it would have been a whole lot better were they the same age. But secondly, can the man not lift his fucking feet off the ground for one goddamn scene?? The entire movie is pierced by the awful shuffle of an old ass man who drags his feet at every step and that absolutely ruined most of the movie for me. All tension from everything that was supposed to be making this a psychological horror was gone because of that headache inducing shamble.

You Should Have Left (2020)
A family of three moves into a new house but there’s something unsettling about the nature of their new home.
The strongest element of this film, and the one which separates it from other similar films, is the location and how it’s used. The spatial inconsistencies gives the impression that the building is more than just another haunted house and the time distortion helps to confuse the state of the character’s mental health and makes the house a good trap.
Despite how interesting these methods were at times, the film takes quite a while to get to the characters openly facing the issue or even realising there’s something wrong. This is made to feel like the pace is even slower by the fact that the narrative only has those few tricks to repeat and there aren’t many ways shown to vary them.
The cast is limited to just three people for most of the film which is good because it forces the focus to be maintained on them and intensifies the psychological pressure they’re under. The acting holds up well all round, including the youngest cast member. The other technical aspects were also engaging, most notably the use of lighting and framing inside the house.
There is a twist near the end which isn’t very effective because it’s not hidden well enough and is apparent from the first scene. This makes the ending rather weak but the poorest aspect of the film is that it doesn’t make full or proper use of the most interesting elements, the time/space disturbances in the house. There’s no real explanation and it doesn’t really build up to anything.
3/10 -This one’s bad but it’s got some good in it, just there-
