There was a pause. The annoying thing about an unseen companion, he realized, was that you could only judge them by the words they spoke and the times they didn’t. It made him wish he could see his face, at least a little. Maybe just an outline in the moonlight. But he was like a dark void on the other side of the bed, an almost glaring nothingness.

Finally, he cleared his throat. “I’m Auston.”
