Whoever made Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo (Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji’s actors) sing the main ost of The Untamed, which is 無羁 (wú jī)— had made the best decision in the entire decision making world.

Whoever decided to name it 無羁 (wú jī) and make it the WangXian version (from the books/donghua) of the live adaptation, and also the one that Lan Wangji canonically composed as a theme song for him and Wei Wuxian — had made the second best decision in the entire decision making world.

Whoever decided to make the official English title of 陳情令 (chén qíng lìng) as “The Untamed” which also means “unrestrained” or “無羁 (wú jī)”— had made the third best decision in the entire decision making world.

Like it was so genius? Knowing that whenever you listen to 無羁 (wú jī), it’s Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji themselves singing the song? Their theme song? And that even though they censored it, they still managed to make the song name a combination of their names (Wuxian + Wangji)? And that the literal English translation of 無羁 (wú jī) is “unrestrained” which can also mean “Untamed”?

Ok so since y’all really liked part 1, here’s part 2 of my Wangxian figure skating AU spiral.

So they’re at a competition, I’m gonna say the Grand Prix Final cause it’s one of my faves. The bets are looking pretty even: it’s gonna be anyone’s game. Wei Ying only just scraped into the finals, to everyone’s shock. He was off at both the NHK trophy and Skate America, and rumor has it he was quiet backstage at both events. This unnerved Wangji, as in his whole career, Wei Ying had been called a lot of things, but never “quiet”.

Not that Lan Zhan cared. Nope. No sir. He didn’t care at all, especially not when Xichen would give him an update occasionally on what he’d heard from Jiang Cheng and Nie Mingjue (who’s relationship(?)with his brother Lan Zhan was trying to avoid talking about for as long as possible)

And anyway, Lan Zhan has enough on his plate as it is. He’s nursing an ankle injury from Skate Canada, when Wen Chao accidentally on purpose collided with Lan Zhan during warm up for the free skate. Lan Zhan still managed to win, running on pure adrenaline, but was now paying the price.

So now he sits rink side, warmed up and ready to skate, and as he watches Wei Ying skate out onto the ice his breathe catches in his throat. Cause Wei Ying is covered head to toe in all black, his blazer covered in rhinestones, his long hair slicked back, and tight leather pants doing wonders for his ass-

And as Lan Zhan watches the short program he realizes all the reports were right, because Wei Ying is not himself, at all. And it almost physically pains Wangji to watch Wei Ying mess up his first jump, a quad Salchow, because never in his life has Wei Ying messed up a Salchow. But Lan Zhan has to give it to him, Wei Ying gives a hell of a performance, effortlessly capturing the hearts of everyone within a 100m radius. The routine ends quick, but not quickly enough, and Lan Zhan’s heart hurts for some reason as he watches Wei Ying’s face fall when the music stops. He bows and exits the ice as quickly as is politely possible. He barely makes it through his own score, before he’s up and leaving the rink side area.

Lan Zhan watches him leave, pushing through the doors to backstage. He whips towards his brother, excuse on the tip of his tongue, but Xichen smiles at him and beats him to it.

“Go,” he says, an encouraging hand on Lan Zhan’s shoulder, “Just be back by the time Jiang Cheng’s program starts, you’re after him.” It’s not much, but it’s enough.

As he approaches the doors, Lan Zhan bites his lip, mind racing as to where to start his search for Wei Ying. However, it all falls flat as he pushes through the doors, and is greeted with the sight of Wei Ying 20 meters away, down the dark hallway. His head hangs low, standing face to face with a seething Yu Ziyuan. As he goes to call out to Wei Ying, he’s stopped in his tracks by a sound that makes his blood run cold.

*SLAP*

He watches Wei Ying’s head turn to the side, and his hands clench as he wills himself not to reach up to his own cheek. Lan Zhan sees red as he watches a tear trail down his now marked cheek. He almost doesn’t hear the words that come out of Yu Ziyuan’s mouth, but he does, and it’s enough to make him clear his throat, the sound rough, like he’s just swallowed sandpaper.

“You ungrateful disgrace! If we hadn’t plucked you off the streets-“

She stops at Lan Zhan’s sound, and turns with a fake, venomous smile plastered across her face.

“Lan Wangji, how pleasant to see you. If you’ll excuse me.”

She brushes past him, back out into the arena, and Lan Zhan watches Wei Ying slump against a wall.

He stares at the floor, as Lan Zhan approaches, mumbling softly, and it breaks Lan Zhan’s heart to see him so vulnerable.

“Sorry you had to see that, Lan Zhan, but it’s fine, don’t worry, it’s all out of love, really-“

He stops as Lan Zhan’s hand cups his face gently, lifting silver eyes to meet gold. Lan Zhan doesn’t know what he’s doing exactly, but he lets it happen.

“Prove her wrong.” He says, gaze strong and set on Wei Ying.

He doesn’t know what lies that woman has fed Wei Ying, but he wants, needs him to know that she’s wrong.

“W-what?” Wei Ying breathes, eyes wide and shining with fresh tears.

Lan Zhan steps back slightly, suddenly aware of his own, burning cheeks. He simply mumbles “Prove her wrong.” once more, before he sets off back down the hallway.

It’s silent behind him, and he worries that he overstepped, until he hears a soft giggle, and then Wei Ying calls after him, voice quiet but teasing all the same.

“Who knew Lan Wangji was such a softie under all that frostiness.”

Lan Zhan smiles to himself, not looking back, and in the most stern tone he can manage, mutters:

“Ridiculous.”

Lan Zhan’s short program is good, his ankle aches through the whole routine but he manages to get through it. He feels satisfied with himself at the end of it, and when he turns to leave the ice, he spots Wei Ying close to where Xichen and his uncle stand, clapping, lopsided smirk sitting beautifully on his face. As Lan Zhan passes him, he stops. Wei Ying whistles.

“I have to say, Lan Zhan, you might have me beat in the short.” He leans close, breath tickling Lan Zhan’s ear as he whispers, “but I’ll get you in the free.”

Lan Zhan walks away, towards the kiss and cry, ears burning, and he glares at his brother who hides a smile behind his hand.

Wei Ying’s free program is a sight to behold. He places first overall, to the surprise of virtually everyone.

Everyone except Wangji, who suppresses his smile as the second place medal is placed around his neck.

Oh well. He can beat Wei Ying at the 4 Continents.

"What’s wrong or right lies within me; slander or praise derives from others.  Let us not discuss about what has been gained or loss. " - The significance of Wei Wuxian's proclamation.

This is one of the major lines in MDZS, and it has been brought up for discussion recently. I thought I’d chip in and bring something more to the table

In Chapter 75, Lan Wangji meets Wei Wuxian in the Burial Mounds and there was a conversation that went as follows: 

He (Wei Wuxian) said, “Could someone give me a bright sunny path that’s good to walk on?  A path that allows me to protect myself and others without using ghost cultivation?”

Lan Wangji stared at him without replying.  But they both knew it in their hearts.

There was no such path.

There was no solution.

Wei Wuxian replied slowly, “Thanks for spending time with me today.  And thanks for telling me about the news of my sister’s wedding.  However, what’s wrong or right lies within me; slander or praise derives from others.  Let us not discuss about what has been gained or loss.  (是非在己，毁誉由人，得失不论) I’m accountable for what I should do in my heart.  I also believe I can control myself.”  - Translated by me.

An alternative translation from @fwoopersongs: ” Thank you for being with me today, and thank you also for relaying the news of my Shijie's marriage. But right or wrong - that is mine to discern, ruin or acclaim - that outcome lies with others, whatever may be gained or lost, I will not pursue. I have the measure of what I should do. I also believe that I can maintain control.” 

What’s really interesting is the phrase “wrong or right” and the way “slander” as used in this phrase has historical roots.   

Wrong or Right 是非 - The Book of Rites 

This is a specific term that refers to the rights and wrongs or a particular topic, or discourse.  It originates from the “Book of Rites”, a compilation of Confucian ideology during the Waring States to the Qin and Han Dynasty.  The original phrase in Chinese is “夫礼者，所以定亲疏，决嫌疑，别同异，明是非也” which means, “rites are used to determine the closeness one has, to discern any doubt or suspicion, to differentiate and to perceive right from wrong.”

The Origin

The entire phrase was likely inspired by a couplet that’s located in the Yuelu Academy in Changsha City.  The Yuelu Academy was established in the 976AD and it’s an institute of higher learning since the Song Dynasty.  It has become a university since 1926 and it was changed to Hunan University.

Written by Kang Minben (the head of the Yuelu Academy), the entire couplet goes like this:

是非审之于己，毁誉听之于人，得失安之于数， 陟岳麓峰头，朗月清风，太极悠然可会。

To judge what is right or wrong by oneself, and to hear praise and slander from others; what has been lost or gain is fated.  To ascend the peak of Yuelu under the radiant moon and admist the gentle breeze, Taiji would be achieved in due time. 

T/N:  The peak of Yuelu is the highest peak of the mountain at 300m above sea level.  

Analysis:  The couplet instructs students to distinguish between right and wrong, and make light of what is gained or loss.  Students should seek to ascend to the peak of their knowledge, and it hits them, it will be like the clear moon and the cooling breeze.  They would then be naturally enlightened about the origin of all things. 

(I've highlighted the parts hat kind of correspond with the original phrase in MDZS)

君亲恩何以酬，民物命何以立，圣贤道何以传， 登赫曦台上，衡云湘水，斯文定有攸归。

How should we repay the kindness of our leaders and our parents?  How do we uphold the lives of the people?  How does the sage pass one his ways?  When one steps onto the Hexi Terrace and overlooks the drifting clouds and the River Jiang; the learned shall bear this responsibility.

I WAS SO RIGHT ABOUT WEN NING BEING CLOUD He was stabbed through the middle and is now in a weird coma after being rescued by Zack. Peak Cloud right there. Just watch, homeboy is going to have an identity crisis/memory issues. BB CLOUD IS ALIVE!!!

After the midnight rescue and pivotal point where Sephiroth stands aside, allowing his beloved to pass with the remnants of the Wen clan:

THE BABY HAS ARRIVED. He is a CHONKER and needs ALL THE SNAX. AND HE RECOGNIZED HIS OTHER DAD OUT OF EVERYONE!!!!!!! FEED HIM WHATEVER HE DESIRES.

Baby A-Yuan supremacy. I can't even think of a parallel for him in FF7 because I'm too busy wanting to pinch his chubby little radish cheeks.

Maybe he's Nanaki. An expert at getting grown-ups to share snacks with him, who grows up into a surprisingly competent teenager due to all the ~trauma~.

Anyway, market scene in a nutshell:

Child: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Sephiroth: ...😐

Child: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

Zack with his juniors aka ducklings is like a border collie intensely guiding them in the right direction as they bumble along.

Also I heard that he has a long wang, so Long Wang-ji seems appropriate too!

The Lan clan should be the Lan, meaningful glances clan. There is so much staring deeply into each other's eyes. And the eyes of their crushes.

Jin Ling getting stabby with Zack.

Zack making himself bait as if this was FF7 canon.

When they visited Genesis and Zack's internal injuries caught up to him.

It was so heartbreaking to watch Zack gather himself to be the sacrifice yet again, huge "heh, the price of freedom sure is steep" vibes 😭😭😭

Then Sephiroth jumps in with a "No. No, you're not doing this alone this time." And Zack is so relieved and surprised and you really have to be looking, but his whole body just relaxes and lights up at the same time, like the weight of the world he puts on like a backpack is suddenly halved and 😭😭😭😭

Wen Ning/Cloud's arc is so wholesome. After all the, y'know, mind control and death stuff.

So proud of him for separating his identity from Zack's in the end, but never letting go of the loyalty. He recognizes and adopts A-Yuan like Cloud does with Denzel.

He's strong with Zack and becomes strong alone.

I do NOT feel as bad as the series wanted me to feel about baby-face incest filicidal murderer McGee. Sure, Angeal loved him, but Angeal was severely misled. If Angeal wasn't such a good guy, I'd feel completely delighted that McGee's boyfriend was the one who killed him. His good qualities were *checks notes* remembering one guy's name and not physically abusing his boyfriend or accepting his boyfriend's offer to die with him. Wow.

He can go kick rocks and stub his toe and get a major infection and die.
