To FANON Jiang Cheng whose Father never tried to teach or guide him. Because CANON Jiang Cheng has!
The founder of the YunmengJiang Sect, Jiang Chi, was born a rogue cultivator. The ways of the sect were honest and unrestrained. Madam Yu’s manners were the exact opposite. And, both Jiang Cheng’s looks and personality took after his mother. He hadn’t ever been to Jiang FengMian’s liking. Since birth, he taught him in many ways, yet he still couldn’t change, which was why Jiang FengMian had always seemed as though he didn’t favor him too much.
MDZS ExR FanTranslation chapter 56
Since birth, yes, Jiang Fengmian never stop trying to teach Jiang Cheng until he was 17.
Jiang Cheng, "It served you right to be bored to death. You shouldn't have played the hero and you shouldn't have cared for such a hell of a thing. If in the beginning you didn't..."
Suddenly, Jiang FengMian spoke, “Jiang Cheng."
Jiang Cheng paused, knowing that he had said too much. He was quiet at once. Jiang FengMian didn't look as if he was blaming him of anything, but his expression had turned from calm to more solemn,
"Do you know in which ways what you just said is not appropriate?"
Jiang Cheng's head hung low, "Yes."
Wei WuXian, "He's just angry and speaking without care."
Seeing how Jiang Cheng's mouth and heart were still at odds, how he still felt defiant, Jiang FengMian shook his head,
"A- Cheng, there are some things that can't be said even if you're angry. If you said them, it means that you still don't understand the motto of the Jiang Sect, that you still don't..."
The harsh voice of a woman came from outside the door, "Yes, he doesn't under-bla bla bla
Oh oh. Jiang Fengmian is still trying hard. But both Mother and Son didn't seem to appreciate his effort for his teaching (that is obviously for his own son's good).
JC (toxic ones) Stan: poor my baby cheng cheng, his father neglected him, never loving him, never trying to teach him bohoohohooo.
JC throughout MDZS: it's me~! Hi! I'm the problem, it's me~!

You can't even gain your father's favor, what's the use of you?!
I read a Palace Drama novel where a concubine scolds her son for failing to attract the Emperor's favor.
Somehow, I think this is strikingly similar to how Madam Yu demanded Jiang Cheng, to be better and to be more favored by his father, to compete with a certain woman's son (WWX) for Jiang Fengmian's love. As if without JFM's affection, Jiang Cheng is useless, unworthy.
She instilled and forced how her son should live, and demanded her son life's goal, to be one and only, to be better than Wei Wuxian so that her father will appreciate him.
... As if when Jiang Cheng couldn't be better than WWX he will be a useless piece of shit, unworthy of anything.
... As if there will be no individual called Jiang Cheng if that person life goal is not to defeat Wei Wuxian.
Actually, the one who belittled and dissatisfied with Jiang Cheng the most is NEVER Jiang Fengmian or other people.
It's his beloved mother, Yu Ziyuan, who looked down and didn't treat her son as a human being with independent life.

there is an incredibly ironic thing about Mdzs fanfics.
The so called fanfic who hates the Jiangs, really did write Jiang Yanli as a scheming girl who has some intention, nonetheless, she was written to be actually aware of the current issue, has some thoughts on her own, and has her own character.
However, the so called fanfic who loves the Jiangs, actually wrote Jiang Yanli, only to appear and say, "Acheng Axian, I made some lotus root pork ribs soup. " Or, "Axuan, have some soup". She was degraded into just that one Soup Girl, ironically. Only appear to display how "warm and good" Is the situation in the Jiang household by bringing a bowl of soup!
This is really ironic.
If I didn't know, I will really think those authors who boldly say they love Jiangs, actually they hate the Jiangs instead! 🤣🤣

Lan WangJi replied, "We will wait until we find them. After all, we do what we must." Wei Wuxian, "Just by using nets?" Lan XiChen, "That is right. Does the YunmengJiang Sect have other methods?" Wei Wuxian smiled but didn't respond. Of course, the YunmengJiang Sect used nets as well. But, because he was a good swimmer, he had always jumped into the river and dragged water ghouls out. However, this method was too dangerous; he definitely couldn't do it in front of the Lan Sect's people.
....I'm sorry, what

Summary:
Leaving YunmengJiang in an effort to curb the tensions in the Jiang family, Wei WuXian becomes a rogue cultivator. Even without the support of a sect, he is a rare genius whose name will become known across the cultivation world and whose techniques will influence the course of a war. However, what influences his own fate is a chance meeting that becomes the first step toward love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cover of this book is self-made bookcloth, painted with mountains and a burning gold sun. The spine features the same lotus as seen later as a scene break. The hexagram array around the title (and all later arrays) are taken directly from I Ching drawings and diagrams. On the cover, the hexagram title is printed on vellum so that the marbled paper behind can show through.
Tumblr media
I sewed the headbands in WWX & LWJ's colors. Though difficult to photograph, you can also see here the slight shine of the red-reflective pigment I colored the edges with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Further fun with hexagrams!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The chapter headers incorporate a Fu love talisman design set over mountain scenery.
I had so much fun designing this book! The design itself is partially a love letter to a book I was recently gifted by ruby/hosruba during the @renegadepublishing Exchange. Their use of single column chapter pages and printed vellum over a colorful paper was inspiring!!
This fic was chosen by me as part of an exchange with @pleasantboatpress. I received a lovely copy of "Two Solitudes" (a Hannibal fic) from them. We each picked a fic that the other had yet read to recommend to them, and bound that fic and sent it to them. And if you are into MDSZ, I also recommend this fic to you!

Lan Xichen loves his brother.
Meters away, Jiang Wanyin bends forward slightly to brush off the shoulder of one of his junior disciples. "Pan Fu, is this how you intend to meet Lan-laoshi?"
"No, zongzhu," the boy responds, all sweetness. His eyes are brightly innocent, which in a YunmengJiang disciple is a sure sign of mischief. Lan Xichen wonders if the junior intentionally rubbed dirt on his robes; affection for Jiang Wanyin seems to lead the afflicted down strange paths.
From Lan Xichen's side, jade creaks against metal in Wangji's grip.
Lan Xichen loves his brother. He does. However, he wishes Wangji was not here to greet the YunmengJiang disciples for the lectures.
As Jiang Wanyin straightens, the breeze catches his violet ribbons, ends fluttering near his waist. "GusuLan has expectations that you will all meet. Their methods are different than ours, and you will master them." He pauses, turning his head to meet the gazes of the whole group; his ribbons slide against his neck with the movement. "Am I understood?"
Some youths elbow each other and others giggle, but they all say, "Yes, zongzhu!"
"Disgraceful," Wangji whispers.
Jiang Fengmian had never escorted his juniors to the lectures. Why did Jiang Wanyin? Just to torment Lan Xichen? It seems unnecessary.
Jiang Wanyin's posture softens. Don't, Lan Xichen thinks wildly, but as usual his pleas go unheard. "Their food is also different, but they will feed you well. Don't go without because it's unfamiliar; although it takes time to adjust, be patient and eat well."
"Zongzhu, what if we're really hungry?" asks one of the girls. "Shen-shijie said they don't eat any meat at all, and she could barely stand without fainting!"
"Liang Min, how many times has Shen Yuxi tried to scare you and laughed when it worked? Each of you will get a small allowance for Caiyi Town each week"--several of the juniors whoop, but they quiet with grins when Jiang Wanyin turns to glare at them--"provided Lan-laoshi has no complaints of your behavior. Do not bring meat into Cloud Recesses, and under no circumstances are you to hunt or fish within their grounds."
One of the taller boys says, "Did anyone break the rules when you were here?"
"Yes," Jiang Wanyin says quellingly. "They regretted it."
The disciples look between each other, and Lan Xichen can tell that once again YunmengJiang disciples will test shufu's patience.
With a nod, Jiang Wanyin turns magnificently and starts walking toward the stairs, only to stop when he notices them. "Zewu-jun, Hanguang-jun," he greets with a bow.
One of his inner layers is bridal green¹. Bridal green. The hissed breath from Lan Xichen's side is, frankly, perfectly reasonable. Bridal green. Certainly, it's a fetching combination with violet and black, but does Jiang Wanyin not consider Lan Xichen at all when he makes his sartorial choices?
Lan Xichen returns the greeting while Lan Wangji burns quietly beside him.
Jiang Wanyin's eyes flick to Wangji and then, as if resigned to Wangji's rudeness, return to Lan Xichen. "I hope we weren't in your path?"
Lan Xichen smiles, although he can tell it isn't his best effort. "Wan--we wanted to walk up the mountain with you and your disciples."
With a polite acceptance, Jiang Wanyin moves to Lan Xichen's other side. When they move to walk together, though, Wangji stays put, only to follow immediately behind Jiang Wanyin.
When he was still a boy, Lan Xichen had made a habit of counting each stair any time he went up or down the mountain. He knows the number perfectly. Now, however, with Wangji hounding Jiang Wanyin, it feels as though there must be twice as many stairs as usual.
¹ Tang Dynasty brides wore green, which I think is very pretty and have decided to use for my mdzs works.
@runespoor7, I hope you enjoy what your comment and earlier ficlet inspired!

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever written a meta on Madam Yu/Yu Ziyuan before? 🤔 Let’s change that!
Yu Ziyuan is a petty ass spiteful bitch who never loved Jiang Fengmian, showed no care for her only daughter Jiang Yanli, and cared for her only son Jiang Cheng only insomuch as he was a reflection of herself. There is not a singular nice thing she has to say to or about Jiang Yanli in the text, not even on the eve of her death. Towards Jiang Cheng, her “defenses” of him are all backhanded comments on how he isn’t better than the son of the woman she, herself, is jealous of, that he is unlikeable because he is her son, and that even his own father doesn’t want him. Jiang Cheng already feels unloved by his father from Yu Ziyuan’s perpetual harping before Wei Wuxian is brought back from Yiling, so this insecurity cannot be laid at his feet. On top of that example, people also like to claim that Jiang Fengmian was a “bad father” to Jiang Cheng because Jiang Cheng only remembers (which is already suspect because jc usually only conveniently remembers things that make him a victim) his father holding him a handful of times, but as for his mother? The only time he remembers her hugging (and kissing) him is when she knows she was about to die. He is 17 and has never been hugged by his mother in living memory. But she loves him (allegedly).
As for her (alleged) love and pining for Jiang Fengmian:
Of course, she was Jiang FengMian’s wife, and used to cultivate with him as well. Naturally, she should be called Madam Jiang. But, for some reason, everyone had always called her Madam Yu. Some people guessed that it was because she didn’t want to take on her husband’s surname due to her assertive personality.
Madam Yu came from the prominent Even after she married Jiang FengMian, she had always been out on night-hunts, not overly fond of staying at the Jiang Sect’s Lotus Pier. On top of that, where she lived at Lotus Pier was different from where Jiang FengMian did. She had her own area, where only she and a few of the family members she’d brought from the Yu Sect lived.
—Chapt. 51: Courage, exr
She refuses to be known as the Madam of the Jiang Clan. She refuses to integrate her people into her husband’s home. She refuses to stay in the same place as her husband in their home. She refuses to even be in their home except to prepare for nighthunts. And when she’s home, she only picks fights, claims that she’s the only one who sees what’s “really” happening but nobody listens because they don’t like her or what she has to say, then leaves again. This is not a woman that cares about the clan she married in to. This isn’t even a woman that cares about her immediate family. So why is she even here?
This culminates into the “petty ass bitch” part:
The entirety of the cultivation world knew that third lady Yu had cultivated together with Jiang FengMian when they were young. Jiang FengMian’s character was gentle, yet Yu ZiYuan’s personality was harsh. The two didn’t share too many interactions. Thus, although their backgrounds matched, nobody associated the two as a pair. Later, ZangSe SanRen came from the mountains, passed by Yunmeng, and happened to become friends with Jiang FengMian. They had even night-hunted together on multiple occasions. Both thought highly of each other. People supposed that it was very likely for ZangSe SanRen to become the next mistress of Lotus Pier.
However, soon afterward, the MeishanYu Sect proposed an alliance through marriage to the YunmengJiang Sect.
—Chapt. 56: Poisons, exr
Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan knew each since they were young and had many interactions, but they were incompatible because of Yu Ziyuan’s volatile personality. Nobody considered them a pair despite being a perfect match on paper. Neither of them wanted marriage; neither clan proposed or pushed it. However, the moment another woman appears that is universally loved and is suspected to be made into the new Madam Jiang, suddenly MeishanYu wants to pressure Jiang Fengmian into this ill-fated marriage? The story makes it clear that the proposal only came into existence after Cangse Sanren became a rumored option—not during any of the other times Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan had met and parted without a care, not when Cangse Sanren first descended—while only Jiang Fengmian opposed the marriage. And who does Yu Ziyuan have a massive inferiority complex to, so much so that she’s willing to abuse the orphaned son of the woman to make him indebted to her family? Cangse Sanren.
Yu Ziyuan wanted to marry Jiang Fengmian not out of care or love but out of a petty desire to “prove” that the position of Madam Jiang was hers, only. Even if it meant consigning herself and another person to a loveless, violent marriage. From beginning to end, Yu Ziyuan was a person obsessed with her reputation and what she felt was “owed” to her as the daughter of cultivation clan leaders, and this led to the destruction of herself and her family.
Anyways, that’s all, folks!

From this:
The most laughable one was the YunmengJiang Sect, the people of which either had been killed or had scattered, leaving only Jiang Cheng, who was younger than even Lan XiChen and was still a child born yesterday, who had nobody in his hands but still dared call himself sect leader, holding up the banner of rebellion as he recruited new disciples.
To this:
No matter which clan you chose to offend, you shouldn't offend the Jiang clan. No matter which person you chose to offend, you shouldn't offend Jiang Cheng

YunmengJiang will always perish.
No matter if WWX saved LWJ and JZX or not, no matter if there is even a Head Disciple named WWX or not,
as long as QishanWen has the intention to dominate the Cultivation world,
as long as YunmengJiang has no power to resist,
The end game will always be the same. The massacre of YunmengJiang, the death of the Sect's patriarch and his wife.
The stupidest thing to blame is blaming WWX for the massacre of YunmengJiang. It is only for those who lost some screw in their head, knowing they have no power to resist the strong (QishanWen), and can only blame and accuse the weak (WWX).
But the most ridiculous thing is, after the strong enemy perished, they still keep the mindset of blaming the weak.

There's An App For Everything
by Sweetlittlevampire (@sweetlittlevampire)
G, 4k, Wangxian
Part of the MDZS Secret Santa 2023
Summary: During the Cultivation Youth Games, Wei Wuxian from YunmengJiang and Lan Wangji from GusuLan get paired up to take down a yao to win points for their respective teams. Which wouldn't be a problem, if Lan Wangji wasn't painfully aware of his big fat crush on Wei Wuxian. It might, in fact, be more than just a crush. The yao decides to interfere, but thankfully, Wei Wuxian...has an app for that. Kay's comments: Oh, I loved this modern cultivation AU! The use of technology in this story was so creative and definitely something I could picture Wei Wuxian doing! In this story, Wangxian were paired up for a team night-hunt during the cultivation youth games. They are great partners of course, but seeing Wei Wuxian in all his genius action, Lan Wangji is also not able to hold back. They were so cute in this story! Excerpt: Wei Wuxian looks up at him, then, and grins. “But Lan Zhan, I am paying attention!” He turns his screen so that Lan Wangji can see. He knows that he’s looking at a talisman design, but Lan Wangji would have to examine it further to find out what exactly it can do. “It’s an app for designing talismans on the go!” Wei Wuxian prattles on. “You know that I love designing them, but I was getting tired of always having to carry talisman paper with me. It gets lost or tears so easily, and I much prefer this! You can copy them onto traditional talisman paper, of course, but this thing stores your design, you can annotate it so you’ll never forget what the different radicals mean and in which order they’re supposed to come. You can make edits at any time, and you can even upload them to a cloud if you’re connected to the internet! Isn’t that great?” Lan Wangji blinks. “There’s an app for making talismans?” Yep!” Wei Wuxian replies. “I was bored last winter so I sat down and researched how to make apps and tinkered with it until I had this.”
pov lan wangji, modern setting, modern with magic, no sunshot campaign, rivals to lovers, competition, getting together, first kiss, no angst, night hunts, fluff, fluff and humor

I read somewhere that The Gusu Lan's simplicity in terms of fashion sense is often overlooked, as it reflects their discipline and resolve towards cultivation. But then I also noticed that YunmengJiang's flashy purples are often overlooked, too. Like, my man Jiang Cheng is the most well-dressed man out there, and Jiang Yanli was always Aesthetic Goals TM. Wei Wuxian may be in his simple blacks and reds, but compared to other sect robes, I find his robes elegant and fashionable.
Although in terms of flashiness, Lanling Jin clan may be the winner, but I find their robes tasteless, with their brand logo in front, like rich people who wear bad fashion as long as the prints louis vuitton or chanel are visible.
But Yunmeng Jiang? *Chef's Kiss* All adaptations understood the assignment that this is the kind of family that supports all the local tailor shops. Each sibling has their own shop because one shop cannot accommodate their NEEEEEED for fashion robes. Meanwhile, Lan Wangji has been wearing the same robes since he was 18. He probably only has two sets that he washes everyday. Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng:

So, looks like I've been blocked for saying Jiang Cheng's people were scared of him to ask him for help on the post about his 'good leadership' skill in Canon Jiang Cheng tag, I'm sorry I assumed that was up for discussion and I really was genuinely meaning for a discussion, and also @labyrynth I did get your notification of asking for source. The two main sources are "Arrogance (5)" and "Longing (3)" In Arrogance, we get Jiang Cheng's thought process highlighting that yes, he's captured people before even if zidian told him they were not body snatchers, the main crime he was capturing them under. A moment ago, Jiang Cheng was certain that this person was Wei WuXian, and all of the blood in his body started to boil. Yet, now, Zidian was clearly telling him that he wasn't. Zidian definitely wouldn't deceive him or make a mistake, so he quickly calmed himself and thought, this doesn't mean anything. I should first find an excuse to take him back and use every possible method to get information out of him. It's impossible for him to not confess anything or give himself away. I've done things like this in the past anyways. After thinking it through, he made a gesture. The disciples understood his intention and came over.
The disciples are long used to it, that's further highlighted in "Malice (1)"
The owner was getting ready to close the shop for the night. Suddenly, seeing that a fancy-clothed, dark-faced young man kicked open the door and walked inside with someone in his hand, appearing as if he was going to disembowel the victim right here, the owner was so frightened that he couldn't speak. A disciple went up and whispered a few things in his ear. With some silver pushedinto his hands, he quickly fled to the back of the hall and never came out again. Without any further instructions, the Jiang Sect's disciples instantly spread out from the inside to the outside, making it so that nothing could enter or escape the place.
Of course the rumors will spread, the people are scared but no one interferes, how can they? The disciples are even used to giving money and making sure no one else can enter/no one can escape, even when they know zidian confirmed that he's not possessed. And then in "Longing" The owner, "That I'm not so sure about. Anyways, the temple's quite popular. In Yunping City, no matter what someone runs into, we'd all go there and pray for the Guanyin's protection. I sometimes go there and light a few sticks of incense too."
Wei WuXian asked, "Then why don't you go find the cultivational sect that's in charge of this region?" He only remembered after he asked. Wasn't the cultivational sect in charge of this region precisely the YunmengJiang Sect.
Yet, the owner curled her lips, "Go find them? How dare we?"
Wei WuXian, "Oh? Why not?"
The owner, "Young Masters, you're not from Yunping City so you don't know. The Jiang Sect is responsible for all of us along the Yunmeng area. The Sect Leader's got quite a bad temper. It's almost frightening. His subordinate's said so a long time ago. Only one sect is in charge of such a large area. Each day, there are almost a hundred cases of small ghosts or other creatures pulling pranks on the living and all that. If every single small thing had to be dealt with immediately, would there be enough time and energy? Those that don't kill anyone aren't malign spirits, and we're not supposed to disturb them with trivial matters that aren't malign spirits." She complained, "What is this supposed to mean? Wouldn't it be too late if we waited until somebody's died to find them?!"
In truth, to refuse to act unless it was a malign spirit was a silently agreed rule that all of the larger sects followed. Although 'to be wherever the chaos is' was praised by many, the only person who really followed this was Lan WangJi, the one beside him right now.
The owner continued, "On top of that, Lotus Pier is truly a scary place. How would anyone dare go there again?"
Wei WuXian moved his gaze from Lan WangJi's calm face with a short pause of surprise, "Lotus Pier is scary? How could Lotus Pier be scary? You've been there?"
The owner, "I haven't been there myself, but I know someone who went because his house was being badly haunted. But it was all bad luck. That Sect Leader Jiang was cracking a glowing whip right on the training field. The victim's flesh and blood flew as high as his screams! A servant secretly informed him that the sect leader caught the wrong person again, that he hadn't been in a great mood, and that he definitely shouldn't be irritated in any way. He was so scared that he dropped off the gifts he brought and fled at once.
He never dared visit again."
Here Jiang Cheng is highlighted as no different than other sects who don't help until someones dead, its common in their society to have little care for the locals but add his torturing habits on top, who would risk asking for help when they could be the next ‘wwx come back from the dead'? So what if zidian confirms they’re not? Sect Leader Jiang will do as he pleases.
I’ve seen this get dismissed as rumors a lot, but its not just rumors, if his thought process confirms it, if his disciples are long used to taking action around it, when his people walked in on it happening, and when they're long used to praying in the Guanyin temple for help than to approach him afraid of his temper.

I think a lot of us really want someone to have survived the burning of Lotus Pier, and I've seen some stories say that some survived because they were out of the pier for one reason or another, but something just hit me.
The Wens placed a restriction on night hunts before they attacked. All of the cultivators, including Jiang Cheng, the actual heir of YunmengJiang, were forced to stay in Lotus Pier. They were all bored out of their skulls when the invasion knocked upon their door because they were all forced to stay inside.
Everyone in Lotus Pier died except for Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian.
Because they were trapped there.
And the Wens knew because they orchestrated it.
For some reason, the massacre is one thing to me. It takes on a whole new layer when I realize that the Wen kept the cultivators there, waiting and ready to be slaughtered.
After everything, Jiang Cheng really was alone, wasn't he?
