#Zeus really is super fatherly and caring and protective

i realized that i do a lot of headcanon dumps for my other characters but i never really... do that for zeus and in honour of his fake birthday i’mma do that bc i have a lot to say!!

zeus really isn’t scared of much.  he struggles a lot with paranoias and stressors but his go-to reaction is very rarely fear.  you won’t see this guy flinch, but you might see him deflect or lash out in anger. 

sometimes zeus models and he’s very good at it 

when it comes to a fight, zeus has no sense of honour.  he can and will use everything at his disposal to win, and doesn’t care how it makes him look.  when you’ve fought against enemies bigger and stronger than you for most of your life, you fight dirty.  zeus will bite or pull hair or kick someone in the balls if he thinks its what it will take to win

he has a frog named zeus jr and sources will not confirm nor deny if this frog has been made immortal...

zeus being young and pretty is kind of deliberate.  i think there have definitely been periods of time in zeus’ life where he had a much more mature appearance.  but part of the reason why he looks the way he does is a) he’s a little vain, lets just get that out of the way, but also b) he wholeheartedly believes that his charm and wit speak for themselves, and he thoroughly enjoys having the upper hand when people (who don’t know him very well) underestimate him as a king because of his appearance.

this also leads me into how i reconcile “wise, fatherly zeus” with my current description of him.  its simple = zeus is those things.  he offers wise council and has always been a protective figure for his own family and for strangers alike... he just doesn’t look like your grandpa!

zeus’ relationship to gender is essentially just zeus going “i’m literally a god and can be whatever i want, why wouldn’t i just dress how i want and act how i want” and now with modern labels there’s a somewhat accurate way to describe who he is and how he feels, even if its not quite on the money

though he’s mostly recovered now, there was a large period of zeus’ life where perfection was everything.  zeus was a brand new king, taking on a new world, with a mountain of expectation on his shoulder.  he needed to be perfect in every way, and one of the ways he accomplished this was making sure he was in peak physical condition, in case another war broke out.  this meant exercising regularly, refusing to eat anything that could come close to being considered “unhealthy” for him.  he had a really bad relationship with his own body and eating habits, and regulated it super strictly.  he’s much healthier now, but still has a hard time choosing fast food without feeling guilty

zeus has a big heart and a bigger purpose and part of that meant creating a world where gods and humans alike could thrive, and i think he knew that this wouldn’t be achieved with just him and his few allies following the titanomachy.  ergo, populating olympus with more gods!  i think this is only a partial explanation for how many kids zeus had, of course.  he still falls for others easily and that influenced him a TON, and i’m not about to say that his decisions were completely rational.  but its a complicated issue, and its not just bc “zeus can’t keep it in his pants”

zeus’ relationship with gaia was incredibly manipulative and abu.sive, and though he did not realize it at the time, he looks back at it and sees just how unhealthy it was. she groomed him to be exactly the puppet she needed him to be, in any way she could (which included physical and sexual means, imo) and then turned her back on him when he stopped suiting her fancy.  he talks openly about disliking gaia -- but he’s told very few people what actually happened.

(Note that when I’m asking this I don’t mean it in a hurtful way at all, but simply bc I’m quite curious and want to know more about this topic!!) (Have a good day!)

Firstly, @theoi-crow has some amazing explanations as to the difference between mythos and religion, so I also recommend checkig out their blog.

Being raised in a Christian dominated world, we are taught that any story involving G-d or His people is from the Bible, and thus Literal and Factual.

Paganism (at least Greek paganism) does not work with that mindset. Sure, we still have creation myths, and hero worship was a thing the ancient Greeks did. But when it comes to the general idea of how the gods acted and behaved, no one turned to mythology.

You see, we don’t just have the mythology for Ancient Greece. We have hymns written by people of the time, and we have documentation of their religious rituals and festivals. We KNOW how they thought of the gods in a religious context, not just when telling Their stories. And we know the attitudes are vastly different.

In mythology, Zeus is a r*pist, and adulterer. He goes around having sex and argubly doesn’t seem too concerned with his responsibilities as King-God.

In worship, however, His fatherly and kingly sides are praised heavily. He is seen as a responsible King, a protective father. The Greek people trust Him to take care of them; He is responsible and kind.

If the Greek people thought He was similar to what He was in mythos, then their worship of Him wouldn’t really make much sense, especially when it comes to which aspects they worship Him in.

So, what’s going on? Mythology is just stories. In Greek paganism, we understand our mythology is just for entertainment, or to tell moral lessons (Arachne, Niobe, Sisyphus, Bellerophon, etc).

Going back to Zeus, He sure does father a lot of kids and has a lot of sex in mythology! But if we approach the mythos as the Greeks did, with the idea of these stories being for entertainment, it actually seems more like a trope than a personality trait. In today’s YA dystopian & fantasy genres, we have The Chosen One. In Ancient Greece, they had “Child of Zeus”. It’s a pretty easy way to set up why your character is important and give them some super-cool powers.

Lastly, we need to take into account how language and culture changes. As many Persephone & Hades worshipers point out, “r*pe” used to mean abduction, not the actual act of intercourse without consent.

Another definition is simply: Intercourse without the consent of the woman’s father. Greece was a patriarchal society, and usually the father had to okay any marriages & relations his daughters were going to enter into.

Zeus, being His usual sneaky self to avoid Hera, is most likely not going to ask for the father’s permission (especially since it’s likely to assume that fathers wanted their daughters to marry so they weren’t “broken goods”). For any mythology where it’s stated Zeus r*ped a woman but she didn’t flee or try to flee, we can read it as she did actually consent, it’s just her father who didn’t.

So, there’s a few reasons not to take mythology at its word. Personally, I (and others) take mythology with a grain of salt. It can be good for associations (like Aphrodite and anemone, Apollo and hyacinthus, etc), and it does give us some lore of the mythology (Prometheus, Titanomachy, etc).

But generally, looking at religious sources is better for knowing what to expect from the Theoi.

Hi! My names arthur and im working on improving my word and building my story, which currently has no name haha! I have a myriad of characters who ill try to list out and give brief descriptions of, aether is technically my main character and some of the characters who are up for question are dead in canon. But you can still ask them stuff, itll just be set before death.

When asking characters questions, rememeber to include the name, their age if theres diffrent ages, i dont mind repeated questions, but if you see the question try not to ask it again lol. If you cant find it with a quick scroll just ask it, although i dont know if this blog will even get that big.

He comes in three evolutions lol, technically, theres four but idk if i would count 7 year old aether.

Ages: 13 yo - colder, hasnt gotten used to emotions, there are two to this as well, pre-rev and then post-rev 13 yo aether, remember to specify lol.

16 yo- a bit more out there, still kinda disconnected and figuring things out, a bit more defensive

22 yo- lax, hes sorta figured shit out, hes not going to go grazy, hes just gonna be chill lol.

Few thousand- mean, likes to bully yurei as he huants her, lowkey a simp for yurei but he wont admit that. Kinda cynical and likes to bring others down, generally a bully

19- emotionless, has to be a really strong emotion to make her emote, tends to stray away from other people, likes to be alone, blunt

A few thousand- sweet, warm and welcoming, tries to be very fatherly and a trusted figure, is very busy most of the tiime unfortunatly though.

8- sweet baby boi, loves his older brother (socrates), idolizes him even, not a good idea though. He writes down everything socrates does, sometimes he imitates his brother as well.

17- dumb of ass, also just dumb, held back a grade, feral child, bites alot of people, soft aestechic but hed stab as a warning

30- also dumb of ass, loves cars in that ‘mah babeh’ kinda way. Hates motorcycles, he thinks they’re ugly. Chaotic but he utilizes it to be the weird and cool uncle/cousin thing

46- too tired for this shit, is a dad, went out to get milk, jk jk, dissapeared for a hot few years, probably got captured by some gang dunno, it happens. Very serious, would make the dumbest jokes with his brothers with a straight face

50- lowkey the neglected middle child, soft goth lookin ass, loves his kid, tries his best to raise his kid, sometimes gets help from esme

Poseidon

57- proud stay at home dad, buff but does the typically wifely duties, makes sure his children get enough love, nutrience and care

Lillith

54- very active, the money maker, kinda soft, both her and her husband poseidon are so just in love with their kids, dote on them constantly, very extroverted, always makes time for her kids

Esme

51- tired of zeus’ shit, does her best to make sure no one dies, still treats mythos as her ‘little baby boy, tired mom vibes.

Everyone here, if they have an age option, the first age option is the age they are when aether is 13, and the second will be when aether is 16 unless stated otherwise

49- fatherly, thinks of most of the gang as his children, calls everyone ‘son’, as a general rule. If you ask for another nickname, he will do his best. Has a bad knee, and is kinda of bad at existing physically

52+- fatherly still, loves almonds, always has a bag of almonds, dont test him. Enjoys travel, might adopt people he meets along the way, still has pains but now he sees doctors, wants to stay active

Indigo

13- sweet, optimistic, always looks on the brightside and tries to see the good in others. Little heater, understands that sometimes fighting is the only option

Akrano

16- lively, very loose and relax, can get serious when needed though, always making jokes and trying to lighten up the mood

19- a bit more, mellow. Still quite lively and childish, but with two signifigant-others you have to settle down sometimes

16- lively, more stern than akrano and kinda worried, but ultimatly also very loose and bright

16- serious, seemingly colder towards everyone, gets along great with psycho-lops, makes him new eye-patches to pass time, actually just very monotone and blank most of the time, although she does care

19- she doesnt change much, she got a bit more expressive, likes babysitting howl

16 1/2- always looks determined, actually kinda scared of conflict, likes to help out with healing though, very proficient in it as well, sounds intimidating while talking about how cute puppies and kittens are

19/20- still the same, is considering studying medicine and medical practices to become a doctor.

17- bright, incredibly lively, loves to joke around and tease and sometimes bully the others, targets aether primarily, hangs out with his brother most of the time, he can fight for himself but he likes the backup, especcially since he is kinda glass-jawed, being that hes a twig

17- quiet, intense eyes, always sounds vaugly confused when he speaks, deep voice lol, likes to train, doesnt understand barks need to tease others, likes to read to the children

20- quiet, intense eyes still, more so nervous sounding, slightly paranoid, cluastrophobic and cant stand dusty places, usually in his house or at the docks, doesnt really go anywhere else

17- loud, headstrong, adamant about her opinions, gets along well with bark, she tries alot to be intimidating, not a twig, but not very big, pretty friendly and sociable

21- calm, too calm, deals with akleas bullshit wonerfully, he just stands there, blank smile on his face as aklea beats the shit outta someone, unintrested in most anything, likes to draw, but hes a much better pastry chef.
