I really want to know what the others, particularly the 3 romantic interests, were thinking in life 1. Their version of the story. Because at first we just kind of had to accept that puppy Yan Lin of life 2, had the anger and hatred in him, not just against the Xue fam, but against Ning'er specifically for SA. Ultimately the only difference we see between life 1 and life 2 at that point is that she rejects him at a really bad time in life 1 (understatement), and that her given reason for rejecting him in life 1 was to become empress, rather than she just wasn't into him.
Speaking of YL and the SA that somehow got past censors, at first I took it as something that happened when XW and YL first conquered the capitol, and that XW may not have known about it or couldn't have stopped it. But from the recent flashback, it's clear that it was ongoing, while the emperor still lived, and that XW and probably everyone else knew about it.
XW was setting himself up to be emperor with YL to support him. So couldn't he have stopped YL? Why didn't he? Was it that he was at risk of losing YL's support if he did and that wasn't worth it? Did he also think he hated JXN back then, and thus that she deserved it?
I kind of don't trust Ning'er's narrative of what happened in life 1, because she is so self-hating. When she tells her 'dream' to second life YL, even he says, 'Ok so you wanted to be empress, but it still sounds like I was the bad guy. Not you.' She was ambitious and did shitty things, but we also know she did good things, like save Fangyin and get the emperor to try and summon YL back once he took power.
So what did happen in life 1 that she doesn't know about? How did XW and YL become so far gone in terms of how they treated her? Did ZZ actually hate her in the end, or did he want her to leave because he was heartbroken? What would the 3 think after she died?
I love second life stories because they do a good job showing the best and worst versions of people, but it's also frustrating because you only get the one perspective.

Jiang Xuening choosing her husband in Story of kunning palace.
1. Yan Lin, a handsome, capable, talented, loving, caring, pleasant natured, rich, viscount (soon to be general) with good personality, character and reputation, who dotes on her.
Xuening - I can't be with him cause in the past life, I betrayed him. And he is just a friend.
2. Zhang Zhe, an honest, straight forward, loyal, serious, quiet, good looking, poor government official with good personality, character and reputation, who has feelings for her.
Xuening - I can't be with him cause in the past life, I betrayed him.
3. Xie Wei, a manipulative, shrewd, calculative, suspicious, sharp, indifferent, scary looking government official, with traumatic past and psychological problems, who is using, controlling and murdering people here and there, obsessed over Xuening even before he loves her.
Xuening - He was more or less the reason I committed suicide in my past life. He also threatens to kill me and chokes me every other day, and I was scared of him for most of the time in the life. But I mean, I didn't betray him in the past life, right? So, yes it's him.

ZHANG ZHE-XUENING-XIE WEI
zhang zhe and xuening is a love built on sacrifice & hate. in the previous life zhang zhe's love for xuening made an incorruptible officer like him corrupt which made him hate himself. xuening who had spent ages scheming & plotting with no regard for anyone but herself, gave up her life in exchange for his. In the end, their love for each other made them sacrifice that which is most important to them. to zhang zhe that is his morality, to xuening that is her ambition. xuening's love for him is hypocritical in nature. she wanted him to abandon his principles to help her but once he did that she realized what she respected most was his moral fiber. hence she too hates herself for stealing what she treasured most from the man she loves the most.
In the present inversely, she sacrificed her love in exchange for his moral fiber. she could not protect the man she loves but she left him with what she respects the most about him, his unbiased principles thereby saving both from lifelong regret & self-hate
xuening idolizes zhang zhe's strength of character. after living a lifetime of malicious detachment she envies how tethered he is to his sense of self and his morality. she was never truly loved by anyone. her step-mother used her as a means to revenge. her parents were more so concerned with her 'proper' sister. like that she grew up not cared for and thereby not caring about anything. which is why she yearns to feel as strongly for something the way zhang zhe feels for EVERYTHING. to xuening zhang zhe is aspirational, he is divine, he is pure.
but it can never work out. if zhang zhe ever slightly stepped out of his strict sense of right and wrong for xuening she would only blame herself. zhang zhe would suffer under the weight of failing to meet his own's expectations of himself and neither would he gain the respect of whom he did it all for because he would realize she hated herself now too. together they would be shells of their former selves.
this is where xie wei comes in. he, much like xuening has also sacrificed love for something, his revenge. and just like how xuening's resolve to give up on zhang zhe weakens from time to time, xie wei's resolve to give up on xuening, also weakens. so when she cries in his arms about zhang zhe its a bittersweet feeling. on one hand, the girl he has feelings for loves someone else. on the other hand, she may be the only one to ever understand him, to resemble him, to struggle the way he struggles. in that instance he is the safest, most understood, most cherished he has ever been and also the most rejected. its complex. its haunting. its brilliant.
like the writer brilliantly puts it, xuening will never find anyone as 'good' as zhang zhe but she will find someone more 'suitable': xie wei.

I'm so annoyed by people saying zz is "too nice", "doesn't know how to survive" etc. Like guys, I think he knew that not everyone is good and honest. He knew that Xue fam don't care about saving anyone, that xw is also not a "good person" bc dont forget zz is an official so he is playing by the rules. Like that's his job -making sure people follow the rules and punish those who dont- so why are we hating him for doing his job CORRECTLY lol😭 I mean from his pov xw is very sus and since he knew from 1st life, xw is a rebel leader who k1lled a lot of people -some of the palace people who died during the rebel might be innocent- so he doesn't trust xw which is understandable. Their goals are different. (And from what we saw xw still want to rebel aka k1lled a lot of people)
So, what i want to say is zz isn't naive or dumb. He knew people are gray but he CHOSE to stand by the rules anyway. Chose to bring justice, to do good.
P.s. I like xw ofc. I LOVE dark, evil character (I even want him to be more dark😭) but i also need to defend my good boi zz

Xie Ju'an, from Jinling. Five years ago, he won three consecutive awards at the imperial examinations. When he entered the palace, he took the position of the Crown Prince's Junior Preceptor. He has been in court for four years and has made friends with the Ministry of Justice. The recent case of the rebels took a turn for the worse last night. Afterwards, you asked Mr. Chen to meet me. How this all connects... there's no need to say more. Story of Kunning Palace (2023) | Ep. 12

STORY OF KUNNING PALACE - Zhang Zhe
I've been dying to watch this show since the first trailer dropped way back when.. Now that it's finally on air, I've been rationing it (i want to finish it soon but also savour it)
There are 3 main love interests (4 in my humble opinion, but that's for another post) one of whom is Zhang Zhe and I cannot begin to express just how dull and annoying he is.
Throughout the narrative, he's presented as someone who's honourable and just, in stark contrast to pretty much every other character in the show. Except that's it, that's his defining feature. Add to that, the man has ZERO tact. Your honour and sense of justice is worth squat if you offend the emperor and get your head lobbed off.
His relationship with Xuening would have never worked because she put him on a pedestal and deified him. It makes sense when you look at the events of the previous life, she's still guilt-ridden about the fact that he got implicated, imprisoned which also resulted in the death of his mother. She 'feels' like she still owes him. I think she's more in love with the idea of him and not who he really is. I genuinely don't think she would be happy with him. She is cunning, she's not above manipulating people to get what she wants and with him, she'd have to constantly restrain that part of herself.
Zhang Zhe also sees things in black and white; you're either good and honourable or you're bad and and dishonourable, there's no space within him for nuance, for all the many shades of grey. If he knew just what Xuening herself had been up to, he would announce her as deceitful and unworthy of trust, irrespective of what her intentions were and what the end result was. Those things don't matter to him.
Which is also why I don't think he'd be a good official unless he either had the emperor's ear or seriously strong support within the court (which again would be hard since he doesn't try to cultivate relationships.)
Zhang Zhe is a nice foil to Xie Wei, who's just as twisted as Xuening (probably a whole lot more) but more importantly, sees her with all her scheming, all of her faults and still falls for her, he likes who she really is. Now, if only he could stop threatening to kill her every few minutes, maybe she'd be more amenable to his advances.
