i think that by far, the most common zutara trope i've seen is zuko freeing katara from her unhappy marriage with the clingy, unappreciative aang.

i've always felt that that aang would genuinely worship the ground katara walked on and be exceedingly kind and respectful, and so i've always thought that this trope would make a lot more sense flipped, with aang in the position of being katara's safe space after zukko reverts back to his angry, sullen, lashing out persona that he was before uncle iroh & the gaang's involvement.

this fic is the result of me having the thought "might f around and write a kataang fic that flips the usual zutara trope of "zuko helps katara escape a failing relationship with aang" 😳"

Zuko was all alone, heading an entire empire and facilitating the transition of his nation from a war-bringer to a force for peace. At first, she told herself that it was only because he had needed help that she chose to stay with him, but that wasn’t being entirely honest. After that play on Ember Island, all of the scenes where the two of them were in love had opened Katara’s eyes to the possibility, and try as she might, she couldn’t shut them again. And Zuko, after all that he’d sacrificed to help them, after redeeming himself in her eyes, even fighting alongside her, he had seemed like her best chance at home. 

So she had stayed with him.

Zuko proposed, after just six months, but Katara thought little of the brief timeline. When you know, you know, right? He had given her his mother’s ring, and had her dress in Fire Nation colours for the ceremony. She had been under the impression that the wedding would be a welding of cultures, and so she had spent weeks painstakingly carving a traditional water tribe proposal necklace. 

When she had presented it to him, Zuko had only said that a Fire Lord couldn’t be seen wearing another nation’s trinkets . She had quietly dabbed away her tears when he wasn’t looking.

The moon rose and set six more nights before Katara rose with it, slipping outside of the castle during the changing of the guard, draped in traditional water tribe colours for the first night in years. Before anyone had seen her, she had made it, slipping between Fire Nation homes almost silently. She only paused to pull clothes and a cloth head covering from a clothesline, silently apologizing to whatever family she had just stolen from. She tucked a couple of coins and a piece of gold jewellery into one of the pockets of the pants still on the clothesline, an attempt at making amends for her crime, then blended into the night again. 

She hadn’t stopped moving until she’d finally found a small forest, then she’d made herself a bed of moss and curled up as if she was a child back on the tundra, pretending to be a sleeping snow fox alongside Sokka.

She missed her brother. She missed her home.

She knew where she would go once the cargo ship reached the land. The last location Aang had been in was the Western Air temple. So that was where she would go. If she needed to, to find Aang, she’d scour every inch of the mainland. She knew he would do the same for her. Which begged the question- why hadn’t he come to her when he began to feel that something was off?

It was that question that Katara started with, as she settled into a comfortable position on Aang’s woven rug, a cup of hot tea curling steam around her body that she absent-mindedly bent into shapes around her.

Aang sighed, looking away. “Katara, I hate to give you more reasons to feel distressed, but in case you hadn’t remembered, you told me to stay away. Told me my “juvenile crush” was ridiculous and made you uncomfortable. I felt awful, and so, I backed off. I kept sending letters every couple months, trying to make sure you were okay, but you told me you were too busy, and I respected that.”

Katara’s tone was unsettlingly neutral when she responded. “...What?”

Aang titled his head, confused. “You said, in your letters, that-”

She responded in that same tone. “What letters , Aang?”

Zutara Week 2022 - Day 1: Tradition

In my experience, family dinner, eating with the ones you love, is a great tradition. Also, I wanted to do a mix of Fire Nation and Water Tribe foods. I like the idea of them sharing both their cultures. Also, steam babies! I always wanted to draw them hehe! (I can't believe I have drawn a background hahahah)

Hey Ronin!!! Hope you’re doing amazing, dude!

(Had to type this all up before answering so that’s why it took a while for me to respond)

12. What are your steambaby headcanons?

- Everytime I think of Zuko and Katara and them having kids, first immediate thought is that their first born is a girl. Just no if ands or buts about it. Zuko - girl dad extraordinaire - just being absolutely enamored with his little girl, this tiny human who has his eyes and hair color but her mother’s features and her wild curls, always makes me so soft. Plus, the thought of him learning how to do the little hair loopies for her because she wants to be like her super cool momma gut punches me right in the feels UGH.

- Eventually they’d try for more, three seems like a good and solid number to stop at. Little trio of a fire bender, water bender and non bender kiddos (and the order of that tends to vary for me just cuz I haven’t really thought too much about it but this would be the lineup, for sure). This headcanon in particular is really influenced by some amazing steam baby art (specifically Hayley Wong’s art (absolutely adore everything she creates for zutara)) I’ve seen on here.

- They’d have the kiddos train in sword combat (blue spirit legacy lives oooon) as well as non-bender fighting techniques (with help from Suki and Ty Lee ofc) because you can’t always rely on solely being a bender to solve your problems. The thought of Ty Lee teaching the kids how to do handstands and little circus tricks like that in between their training is also super cute and fun. Small payback for the circus freak comments from when they were younger 🤣 And it also helps the kiddos bond and become even closer as they grow older.

- The kids would be massive fans of the blue spirit and the painted lady, both because of it having been their parents (they’d absolutely lose it at them having had like a superhero era moment back in the day) and being taken to see ‘love amongst the dragons’ every year as is tradition within their little family.

13. Do you think the Fire Nation would allow Zuko’s heir to become Firelord if they were a waterbender?

- Yes, but not without a decent amount of push back from those still blindly loyal to the old ways of the fire nation or are afraid of change. Which isn’t very many but it’s still enough to be somewhat of a hurdle to overcome, ya know. I also think the acceptance of a waterbender as the fire lord would really go to show the growth of the fire nation as a whole, doing away with the old regime once and for all if that makes sense. They obviously would’ve come around to Katara being fire-lady by that point but when it comes to a direct descendant of the royal family, I’d assume the change wouldn’t be so readily accepted and thus would spark immense debate in regards to the legitimacy of the child’s claim to the title on account of their bending being different than that of previous generations.

What are some of your wingman Aang headcanons? How do you think he would show his support for Zutara?

I think my biggest Wingman Aang headcanon is just that Aang grows as a character, lol. This looks like him actually embracing the themes of the show. E.g., I read a fic in which Aang was hurt when he found out about ZK but still immediately defended them against critics, saying something like, “Katara’s mother was killed because of Zuko’s family, but Zuko turned his back on glory to help save the world. If she can forgive him and they can find love together, then that gives me so much hope for the future of the world." How beautiful is that?!

A character like Aang coming onto the scene in 2005 was BIG. IS big. A kind, sweet, vegetarian kid—Aang was a boy hero who exhibited a lot of feminine traits, and hoo boy that just doesn’t happen in Misogyny World (read: the world). Unfortunately his character arc ended in the pointy rock and toxic masculinity, but it didn’t have to be that way.

But I digress: to my headcanons!

- Aang lets go of his unhealthy attachment to Katara in s3 (which is what helps him access the avatar state lol, not the pointy rock).

- Sometime after the war, Aang notices that ZK seem like they like each other and would be a good couple. He’s a little hurt at first, but is ultimately happy that Katara is happy. He realizes that Katara’s happiness is more important than a silly crush.

- SO Aang joins Toph and Suki in their Zany Schemes (TM) to get ZK together.

- (Their intentions are good, and they try, but they do NOT actually help anyone)

- For example, Suki locks ZK in a room together hoping they’ll sort out their feelings. This happens just before ZK are meant to present together at a Four Nations Summit. Suki and Aang had forgotten about this. Toph had not forgotten, but thinks speeches are boring. Instead of talking about their feelings, Zuko and Katara break through a wall to make the speech in time, causing very expensive fire and water damage to a foreign building.

- Suki and Aang write fake letters to Zuko and Katara from each other confessing their feelings (à la Sokka and Aang in "The Runaway"). Toph sends them and accidentally mixes them up, so Zuko gets the letter intended for Katara supposedly written by him, and Katara gets the letter to Zuko supposedly written by Katara.

- Turns out ZK had been dating all this time but were waiting to tell their friends

- When Aang finds out about ZK becoming official, he gets choked up about his “two best friends” and "two favorite people" falling in love. Toph and Sokka begin protesting behind him but Aang is too overwhelmed to hear them

- Aang is perfectly content being a third wheel, which is really nice for ZK at first because they still want to hang out with their friends. But it takes Aang some time to understand that they don’t want to hang out with him ALL the time 😂 I can see Katara asking Zuko if he’d like to grab dinner at a fancy restaurant and Aang being like “oh yeah I’m free, is it that noodle place?” Or like when Toph asks what ZK are doing for the solstice Aang looks at ZK and is like “Idk guys, what are we doing?” (He just loves hanging out with them so much!)

- Aang, of course, officiates the ZK wedding. I can’t see anyone else doing it because Aang will say all the flowery stuff about balance and love that I think a wedding needs

- And Aang, as is a popular steambaby headcanon, is a doting uncle and loves to yeet the steam babies into the sky. 🥰

- Bonus Aang Alone headcanon unrelated to ZK: Bc our lil dude needs to repopulate the Air Nomads, he’s like should I just sleep around? Aang struggles with this bc he wants true love and a family. Then he falls in love with someone (idk, pick ur fave) and they’re like “I don’t mind if you sleep around just to repopulate the Air Nomads. But…what if you just started a sperm bank?” Which is how Aang founds the Republic City First National (Sperm) Bank and fathers more than 100 children. (Sorry, I just thought of this crack I'm treating seriously and needed to share)

Even from a young age Princess Kya took her role as future Fire Lord very seriously. So seriously that she insisted on “helping” Zuko with his work. This meant the work took longer than it would have otherwise, but Zuko was so enchanted by his daughter that he had a hard time saying no. On more than one occasion, Katara would find their daughter fast asleep in Zuko’s arms as he tried to continue his work without waking her.

Was thought to be a firebender for having her father's eyes

Oh boi were they wrong

Could've gone to a more public school to experience a far more normal childhood if assasination attempts weren't a normal thing

Had to stop wearing the loopies when she started her training cause it kept getting on her face

But she wears them at home

Much to the fire nation's dismay

Flying druk on her own privileges were given to her when she was 18

She fell off the first try-

Remember how zuko said he was "lucky to be born" yeah no that's actually kiara

She was the most sickly out of the three when she was born.

She was born in the middle of blizzard during their visit in the southern water tribe

The women honestly thought she along with katara weren't going to make it

But they're fighters.

After a whole week of fighting to keep her alive. She stayed

She's a non bender

Has majority of her mother's physical feature apart from her eyes

Is 12

Is the bookworm of the bunch

Enjoys studying medicine in her free time or visiting auntie azula to paint

She's a theater nerd much like zuko

But is the most quiet

Social skills who

She absolutely adores grandpa iroh so when the day he passes away it leaves her absolutely distraught

Wishes she was a waterbender like her sister to be able to have healing properties but medicine will have to do

Usually found babysitting Rai or druk once the sun warriors gave the bundle of scales to zuko

Too connected to the spirit world to be bothered with "princess duties"

Started her kyoshi warrior training at 14

Because she's the only non bender of the family. Uncle sokka gave her her own boomerang. Much to katara. Zuko and suki's dismay

But to her she loved it. She loved practicing with it. She loves calculating the angles. The distance. The timing. she was all in for it

They actually weren't supposed to have a 3rd child

Katara was on the cusp of menopause

But zuko and decided "eh why not" and boom steam baby number 3

Hauntingly looks like his father

But has his mother's eyes

God this kid is mischievous

Absolutely gets in his sisters' nerves when he pulls the most unexpected of pranks

And gets even more in the nerves of the castle servants for bringing in wild animals

Once when they were visiting ba sing sei he IMMEDIATELY went to bosco

Little man. Straight up. Jump out of his sister's arms to run up to the big fluffy friendly giant

Much like his mother and auntie. Hq was a prodigy. But he never usually uses his bending since he grew really used to doing things "the normal way" much like his sister kiara

But he does give the best warm hugs when kya and kiara have cramps

Out of the three. He's auntie mai's favorite. He reminds her of tom tom when he was a baby

He only got to be with iroh till he was 4

Back to the topic of him being the trickster of the bunch. He does most of the pranking on the "old looking men are mean to daddy"

This little guy. Hates bullies

Only he gets to be mean and be annoying to his family

How about instead imagine the Royal Family going down to the SWT whenever they can because the kids are half Water Tribe and both their parents think it's a good idea to know about both sides of the family

I'm all for this. There's not a doubt in my mind that Katara and Zuko's kids would grow up deeply immersed in both cultures. And that the family would be instrumental in blending FN and SWT traditions in a way that affects the FN at large.

Ten Times the Father He Ever Was

Zutara drabble Rated E for everyone

     As thrilled as Zuko was when Katara was pregnant the first time, something in him gnawed at his joy. He worried, no feared, that he would be anything like his father. He didn’t want that, never. He swore he wouldn’t be anything like him, as Fire Lord, as a husband, and a father. But his anxiety still planted those seeds of doubt.      Katara was aware of Zuko’s fears. She understood and she did her best to discourage them. He was nothing like Ozai and he would be a better father than him, she told him this every time. She reminded him that he also had Iroh as an example.     But as she looked back at Zuko’s lingering anxieties now, she saw no basis for them anymore. Because from the moment their first child came into the world and to the very present where he is sitting by the turtle duck pond with their five children, smiling as they practically climb on or crowd around him as they played with the turtleducks, there was no doubt that he was the proudest, most loving and most devoted father that anyone could ever know.

Zutara Family portraits 1/2

Zutara family gets their pictures taken, the kids decide to turn it into photo shoot. (I give full permission to draw any of these scenarios that tickle your fancy just be sure to tag this post in the description and/or me in the tags)

Kya, their oldest, a waterbender who has taken up her father’s skill with dual broad swords. She’s playful, but knows when to get serious and get down to business.

Katsuro, is a firebender, closer to his mom than his father. He won’t admit it but he finds his father intimidating. He has some pretty big boots to fill.

Aika, is a nonbender and very loved by her parents and older siblings, they dote on her. Lots of hugs and kisses. Kya likes to bring her in on messing with Katsuro.

SCENARIOS

Bending/Weapons

Kya takes individual pictures with her bending and with her swords before posing with both. She later poses with her mother. Business faces, smiles of pride and joy, camera smiles. In one picture Katara looks at her daughter with pride while Kya looks towards the camera. 

Kya poses with her swords with her father too. They pose in fight stances, and “at ease” poses. Some are combat poses, others are just one sword crossed, while they bend their element with their other hand. A favorite, which proved as a challenge, is Kya’s swords wrapped in water, with Zuko’s wreathed in flames. Then they take some father-daugther pictures. Arms around each other, formal hand on the shoulder, silly photos, pictures of hugs and kisses. 

Katsuro poses with his firebending, his long sword, and water Tribe weapons (these were gifts from Sokka and Hakoda). First by himself then with his father, they do the final motion of the Dancing Dragon, presenting their flames standing back to back. They pose with their swords in fighting stances and “at ease” poses. Some artistic poses are done too. There are versions through out their home of Zuko and Katsuro doing the Dancing Dragon. 

They take formal pictures, standing side by side in formal wear, Zuko’s hand on Katsuro’s shoulder. In one, Zuko brings his son in close, smiling with pride. It take Katsuro a few years (and more than a few times of being told by his parents, aunts and uncles) before he has a more casual, easier relationship with his father.

Aika, in her younger years posed with her parents and siblings. If she did solo pictures is was usually with her dolls and toys. Her pictures took on more variety after she spent some time with the Kyoshi Warriors. She poses with her fans and katana in full battle regalia. She poses with siblings and father with their weapons. Once again, in fighting stance, “at ease” stance, and pictures each of her siblings with blades crossed as if in combat. The picture of the three of them with their blades crossed is a favorite among the siblings. Kya on one knee with her swords drawn, with Katsuro and Aika standing behind her with their crossed single blades. But there’s one that the family as a whole loves even more.

Zuko and Katara sit in chairs Aika kneels in front with her fans out in full Kyoshi Warrior battle regalia while her siblings stand behind their parents with Katsuro’s sword crossing one of Kya’s swords. 

The message is clear: DON’T mess with or attack their parents. The kids WILL fight you!

All five of them pose as a family with their bending and then switch to their weapons. Aika poses with her fans for the bending pictures,�� They all look BADASS. After the pictures with their business faces and smiles, both natural and camera smiles, they start to get to creative with their bending and fans making arches, dragons, streams, and kanji.

two year old Prince Enlai of the Fire Nation is quite possibly the cutest little heir to the throne in recorded history

he’s got a crown of silky, fuzzy ebony hair with curious, ocean blue eyes. His skin is a beautiful mix of Katara’s dark skin and Zuko’s pale complexion.

he’s also a chunky little thing, with adorable rolls of baby fat all over him. And his fat little cheeks...!!

he’s a good-natured toddler, which is an absolute blessing for his parents, and has only thrown two tantrums in his whole life

(both were because of food...he has his uncle Sokka’s gluttonous attitude at dinner time)

to his dad’s delight, he’s a firebender! Of course, he barely can produce a fireball but everyone has faith that he’ll be a force to be reckoned with when he’s older

he is a total momma’s boy; and Katara is more than happy to provide him with cuddles and kisses

but don’t think he doesn’t enjoy his papa’s company because his face just lights up when Zuko walks into the room

Zuko calls him “little dragon”

Katara favors the nickname “turtle duck”

you know how babies and toddlers grab things? Like they really love to grab things? Enlai loves to grab things...especially hair.

“who’s a ferocious little dragon? You! You’re daddy’s little dragon-and you’re grabbing my hair-oh my god it hurts-Katara help please-“

but they genuinely can’t be mad at that little face

despite being a firebender, he inherited his mother’s love of water

he loves to splash in water, as many toddlers do, but he always tries to throw water up and catch it as if it were a solid substance

“Enlai, you’re not a waterbender, my love.” Katara coos as she wrings out water from her hair (she’s never spared when Enlai splashes in the pond outside of the palace)

he is quite the social little kid! All the servants and palace staff adore him, and he’s always so polite (as polite as a two year old can be)

Aang, who’s his godfather, is basically a second father, and is equally as doting to the little boy

Aang looks forward to taking Enlai to ride Appa once he grows older

also Enlai is the only baby Toph will audibly coo over. Sokka will absolutely tease her about this

overall, Enlai has a giant family that’s filled with love and he’s a very lucky kid

Zuko never thought he'd wear white again. At least, not for a special occasion such as this. White was worn for both birth and death. Even after he and Katara finally wed, it never really dawned on him that he would don the crisp robes for such a joyous celebration. It just seemed too good to be true. Zuko finished getting dressed as he watched Katara nurse their newborn daughter.

His girls.

“I’ll get dress soon. She was just hungry.”

“No rush, love.”

Zuko rubbed his nose against Katara’s cheek earning a soft smile from her. He then rested a hand on his daughter’s head who was too focused on her meal to notice. Zuko smiled regardless.

“Have you thought of a name yet?”

Once Katara found out she was pregnant, they of course discussed names but have yet found the right one even after their precious daughter was born. Neither of them minded much though. As Fire Nation tradition, the royal family was given six days to spend with the newborn privacy. On the seventh night which was tonight, the baby’s name was announced to the to the rest of the family on Oshichiya scrolls. A day later, the scrolls would be sent all across the Fire Nation to celebrate their new princess.

“I don’t think the Fire Sages would appreciate it if I wrote down Turtleduck.”

Katara chuckled lightly. “Better than Sokka’s idea of Honora. Or Toph’s suggestion of Sparky Jr.”

“I’m still leaning towards Katara Jr.” Zuko teased.

“It’s too soon for my name to be used yet.” Katara wiped her daughter’s cheek. Her eyes suddenly became glassy.

Zuko grew concern.

“What’s wrong?”

“I dreamt about my mother last night. She told me how proud and happy she was.” Tears slipped down her cheek. “And she’s ready for her spirit to be pass on.”

Zuko tenderly wrapped his arms around Katara and his daughter as tears pricked his eyes.

“She will be brave and selfless like her grandmother.”

Katara leaned into him. “You really like it?”

“Yes. It's the perfect name.”

The baby cooed happily with her golden eyes shining up at her parents. Katara’s expression softened.

“Kya it is then.”

Both of them enjoy playing with each other’s hair. Zuko doesn’t grow his long because he thinks it makes him look too much like his biological male birth contributor, and Katara challenges herself to be able to braid his hair at the length he keeps it at and becomes quite talented at styling hair of all lengths as a result. Zuko can’t style short hair in anything but a topknot but is a whiz at braiding and detangling long hair. This comes in handy when their daughter grows her hair out. This is unfortunate when their son wants a ~warrior wolftail~

In a modern alternate universe, the whole Zutara family (including Aunt Azula and steam babies) watches Emperor’s New Groove and Azula copies Yzma’s voice perfectly for the kids

Katara and Zuko bond with their in-law family greatly. Hakoda sees Zuko as a son (Kanna is great but i am not sure she would be as accepting) and eventually Iroh and Ursa see Katara as a daughter
