England Win Euro 2024
Tumblr media
England's Bukayo Saka scored a hat trick in a 7-0 rout of North Macedonia as they tightened their grip atop Group C in Euro 2024 qualifying on Monday with a fourth consecutive victory.
Captain Harry Kane, with his 57th and 58th goals for his country, Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips all scored at Old Trafford in a game the hosts dominated as predicted.
"This is a feeling I can't really put into words. There's nothing I can say to describe it. I'm just so happy," Saka said after the match.
Manager Gareth Southgate revealed that Saka's tremendous performance had come despite a nagging Achilles injury.
"He's had it for a few weeks," Southgate told a news conference. "It is an injury that just needs managing. When you've had one of the best nights of your life, it's a reminder that it's worth going through these things."
England look set for next year's finals after amassing a perfect 12 points having also beaten Ukraine, who are second on six points from three matches, Italy and Malta.
Saka's scoring heroics came in a flurry straddling half-time.
His first goal in the 38th minute was an angled shot into the top corner. His second just after the break came after he chested the ball down and struck a left-foot volley.
Saka completed his treble in the 51st after running onto a through ball from Kane and then was swamped by joyous teammates. Southgate then wrapped the grinning 21-year-old in a bear hug when he was substituted minutes later.
Saka, who left the pitch after the final whistle clutching the game ball, is the first Arsenal player to score a hat trick for England, and the youngest since Theo Walcott in 2008 against Croatia.

"When he broke into the team at Arsenal what struck us was that in a team that were having a difficult time he was performing at a really high level," Southgate said. "Then when the team were playing well he was still a key player and performing at a really high level.
"So, that says a lot about his mentality, his ability to deal with pressure. And that's the environment that we're in all the time. He's exceptional to work with."
On the heels of a brilliant season for Arsenal, Monday also marked a high after he missed the decisive penalty kick in a shootout loss to Italy in the 2020 Euro final -- held in 2021.
"It's been a really long season. I couldn't have ended it in a better way," Saka said. "Time to relax and have a break. We're really happy with the way the fans turned out and supported us."
Kane opened the scoring in the 29th minute and the Tottenham star added another with a second-half penalty kick. Rashford tapped in a cross from Jordan Henderson just before half-time, while Manchester City's Phillips scored in the 64th minute.
"Tonight was a really special display that we put out," Saka said. "Of course, with me and [Rashford] running down the wings, we were really direct and they couldn't really handle us. I enjoyed playing out there today."
Three days after their 4-0 away win over Malta, the thrashing of North Macedonia added to England's dominant run of Euro qualifying that stretches back to 2016. They have won their last 12 home qualifiers by an aggregate score of 47-4.
England next play Ukraine on Sept. 9 when fourth-placed North Macedonia, who are struggling to match their qualifying high of Euro 2020 and have three points from three matches, host Italy. The Italians are third with three points from two games.

Page 6: After a tumultuous few years Hayden Panettiere’s 2021 is looking bright and she’s been working on herself since her split from toxic ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson -- she’s taken control of her life and is making good choices -- she’s been able to rebuild her life and her relationship with her daughter Kaya who lives in Ukraine with her dad and next on her agenda is reviving her once-hot career
Page 7: Justin Bieber who’s been a devoted member of the controversial celeb-favored Hillsong Church for years is studying to become a minister -- Justin has long credited Hillsong and especially charismatic and recently fired pastor Carl Lentz for saving him from his dark period of drugs, public meltdowns and arrests -- Justin doesn’t plan to give up his music career but he feels there’s a bigger calling out there for him
* Jessica Simpson has signed deals for both a docuseries and a fictionalized series based on her life but not everyone is so pumped about her tell-all tendencies and least of all is her ex-husband Nick Lachey -- for Nick it’s just dredging up a past that’s better left alone and Nick hopes that Jessica goes easy on him in the scripted series but deep down knows there’s precious little chance of that
* Madonna is majorly inserting herself in her daughter Lourdes Leon’s love life and she’s constantly on the phone asking how things are going between Lourdes and her socialite beau of three years Jonathan Puglia and she wants to know when they’re making things official -- Madonna even pushes for double dates so she can bring her 26-year-old boyfriend Ahlamalik Williams -- Lourdes appreciates how much her mom cares but she’s finding all the micromanaging too much to handle
Page 8: Jason Aldean who boasts an $80 million fortune loves splashing his cash around especially when it comes to his children -- the singer who shares son Memphis and daughter Navy with wife Brittany and girls Kendyl and Keeley with his ex likes being seen as the moneybags and leaves tough love to the kids’ moms and he’s always pulling out $100 bills for his teens and buying his little ones new clothes, toys and high-tech gadgets even though they’re so young -- he’s definitely spoiling the kids but nobody complains about it so he just keeps on buying them stuff because nothing makes him happier

Canada Is Relieved at Biden’s Win (NYT) On a snowy evening in December 2016, a month after Donald Trump was elected president of the United States, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada held a rare farewell state dinner for the departing vice president, Joseph R. Biden Jr. It was like a tearful goodbye between two old friends. “We are more like family. That’s the way the vast majority of Americans feel about Canada and Canadians,” Mr. Biden said to a hall packed with politicians in Ottawa. “The friendship between us is absolutely critical to the United States.” He ended with a toast: “Vive le Canada. Because we need you very, very badly.” After four years of surprise tariffs, stinging insults and threats from President Trump, a giddy jubilation and sense of deep relief spread across Canada on Saturday, with the news that Mr. Biden had won the presidency. Many Canadians hope to return to the status of cherished sibling to the United States, and that the president-elect’s personal connection to Canada, and that of his running mate, Senator Kamala Harris, will help heal the wounds.
States cite smooth election (AP) The 2020 election unfolded smoothly across the country and without any widespread irregularities, according to state officials and election experts, a stark contrast to the baseless claims of fraud being leveled by President Donald Trump following his defeat. Election experts said the large increase in advance voting—107 million people voting early in person and by mail—helped take pressure off Election Day operations. There were also no incidents of violence at the polls or voter intimidation. “The 2020 general election was one of the smoothest and most well-run elections that we have ever seen, and that is remarkable considering all the challenges,” said Ben Hovland, a Democrat appointed by Trump to serve on the Election Assistance Commission, which works closely with officials on election administration. Following Democrat Joe Biden’s victory, Trump has sought to discredit the integrity of the election and argued without evidence that the results will be overturned. Republican lawmakers have said the president should be allowed to launch legal challenges, though many of those lawsuits have already been turned away by judges and those that remain do not include evidence of problems that would change the outcome of the race.
Future of business travel unclear as virus upends work life (AP) For the lucrative business travel industry, Brian Contreras represents its worst fears. A partner account executive at a U.S. tech firm, Contreras was used to traveling frequently for his company. But nine months into the pandemic, he and thousands of others are working from home and dialing into video conferences instead of boarding planes. Contreras manages his North American accounts from Sacramento, California and doesn’t expect to travel for work until the middle of next year. Even then, he’s not sure how much he will need to. “Maybe it’s just the acceptance of the new normal. I have all of the resources necessary to be on the calls, all of the communicative devices to make sure I can do my job,” he said. “There’s an element of face-to-face that’s necessary, but I would be OK without it.” That trend could spell big trouble for hotels, airlines, convention centers and other industries that rely so heavily on business travelers like Contreras. Work travel represented 21% of the $8.9 trillion spent on global travel and tourism in 2019, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council. Amazon, which told it employees to stop traveling in March, says it has saved nearly $1 billion in travel expenses so far this year. The online shopping giant, with more than 1.1 million employees, is the second-largest employer in the U.S. At Southwest Airlines, CEO Gary Kelly said while overall passenger revenue is down 70%, business travel—normally more than one-third of Southwest’s traffic—is off 90%. U.S. hotels relied on business travel for around half their revenue in 2019, or closer to 60% in big cities like Washington, according to Cindy Estis Green, the CEO of hospitality data firm Kalibri Labs.
Final weeks of historic hurricane season bring new storms (AP) Just when you thought it should be safe to go back to the water, the record-setting tropics are going crazy. Again. Tropical Storm Eta is parked off the western coast of Cuba, dumping rain. When it finally moves again, computer models and human forecasters are befuddled about where it will go and how strong it will be. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Theta—which formed overnight and broke a record as the 29th named Atlantic storm of the season—is chugging east toward Europe on the cusp of hurricane status. The last time there were two named storms churning at the same time this late in the year was in December 1887, Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach said. But wait there’s more. A tropical wave moving across the Atlantic somehow survived the mid-November winds that usually decapitate storms. The system now has a 70% chance of becoming the 30th named storm. That’s Iota on your already filled scorecard. If it forms, it is heading generally toward the same region of Central America that was hit by Eta. Never before have three named storms been twirling at the same time this late in the year, Klotzbach said. Hurricane records go back to 1851, but before the satellite era, some storms were likely missed.
Religious Persecution Is Worsening Worldwide (CT) Dictators are the worst persecutors of believers. This perhaps uncontroversial finding was verified for the first time in the Pew Research Center’s 11th annual study surveying restrictions on freedom of religion in 198 nations. The median level of government violations reached an all-time high in 2018, as 56 nations (28%) suffer “high” or “very high” levels of official restriction. The number of nations suffering “high” or “very high” levels of social hostilities toward religion dropped slightly to 53 (27%). Considered together, 40 percent of the world faces significant hindrance in worshiping God freely. And the trend continues to be negative. Since 2007, when Pew began its groundbreaking survey, the median level of government restrictions has risen 65 percent. The level for social hostilities has doubled.
Critics, protesters call removal of Peruvian president a legislative coup (Washington Post) The little-known head of Peru’s Congress took the helm of the South American nation Tuesday amid a public outcry over the surprise removal of the country’s popular president, Martín Vizcarra. Vizcarra’s ouster late Monday and the inauguration of interim president Manuel Merino amounted to a return of the political chaos that has long plagued Peru, where nearly every president since 1990 has resigned, been indicted or been jailed amid clouds of corruption. One former president killed himself. Yet at a time when the Andean nation is confronting one of the world’s most lethal coronavirus outbreaks, Vizcarra’s ouster, based on still-unproven bribery allegations, appeared to be fundamentally different. Critics called it a congressional coup staged by Machiavellian legislators desperate to halt his anti-corruption and political reform campaigns, which took aim at their pocketbooks and threatened to end many of their political careers. Under Vizcarra, Peru adopted laws that took on festering malfeasance within the 130-member legislature, where 68 lawmakers are now under investigation or indictment for alleged crimes ranging from money laundering to murder. Members of the current Congress have been prohibited from seeking reelection, and anyone with active charges is barred from running. Critics now fear that Merino—who previously sought to turn the military against Vizcarra and attempted an earlier removal on different grounds in September—will seek to lift those rules, allowing a compromised political class to preserve itself and setting up a new period of instability in this nation of 32 million.
Generation COVID (Foreign Policy) A report from the British school inspection agency found that children had suffered from being outside the regular school system during lockdown, with some younger children regressing from being potty-trained back to diapers and older children showing reduced reading stamina. The chief inspector for schools found that the children experiencing the worst effects were those whose parents’ employment did not allow for flexible or at-home working.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy tests positive for Covid-19 (AP) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced Monday that he has tested positive for coronavirus infection and will be working in self-isolation while being treated. “There are no lucky people in the world for whom Covid-19 does not pose a threat,” Zelenskiy said on Twitter. “However, I feel good. I promise to isolate myself and I continue to work.” Zelenskiy became president in 2019 as a political neophyte, previously known as an actor and comedian. He became popular in the country for a TV sitcom, “Servant of the People,” in which he played the role of a teacher who unexpectedly becomes president after making a rant about corruption that goes viral. He handily defeated incumbent Petro Poroshenko. Ukraine’s coronavirus infections began surging in late summer and have put the country’s underpaid doctors and underequipped hospitals under severe pressure.
Nagorno-Karabakh: Turkey wins the war? (Foreign Policy/Eurointelligence) Russia may have secured a peace deal to end a six-week conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, but Turkey has won the war. Ankara threw its political support behind Azerbaijan and employed Turkish cutting-edge drones and military expertise to allow Azerbaijan to roll over Armenian positions in the difficult mountain area under dispute. The conflict is not new, and occasional fighting has been going on there since 1994, but this time it is a decisive victory. This victory will boost Erdogan’s image as a strongman with geopolitical weight, and helps him put a foot into the South Caucasus. Hard power impresses former Soviet countries.
Hong Kong’s pro-democracy lawmakers resign en masse (AP) Hong Kong’s pro-democracy lawmakers said Wednesday that they were resigning en masse following a move by the semi-autonomous Chinese territory’s government to disqualify four of their fellow pro-democracy legislators. The 15 lawmakers announced the move in a news conference Wednesday, hours after the Hong Kong government said it was disqualifying the four legislators. The disqualifications came after China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee, which held meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday, passed a resolution stating that those who support Hong Kong’s independence or refuse to acknowledge China’s sovereignty over the city, or threaten national security or ask external forces to interfere in the city’s affairs, should be disqualified. Beijing has in recent months moved to clamp down on opposition voices in Hong Kong with the imposition of a national security law, after months of anti-government protests last year rocked the city. A mass resignation by the pro-democracy camp would leave Hong Kong’s legislature with only pro-Beijing lawmakers. The pro-Beijing camp already makes up a majority of the city’s legislature.
Iran sanctions continue (Foreign Policy) The Trump administration doesn’t intend to give up its “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran just because it lost an election. On Tuesday, the U.S. Treasury Department announced new sanctions on six companies and four people accused of supplying components to Iran Communication Industries, a company run by the Iranian military that is already under U.S. and EU sanctions. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said the United States would continue to take action against those that support Iran’s “militarization and proliferation efforts.”
Frantic search after medicines vanish from Lebanon shelves (AP) She is a nurse at a Beirut hospital, and still Rita Harb can’t find her grandfather’s heart drugs. She has searched pharmacies up and down Lebanon, called friends abroad. Not even her connections with doctors could secure the drugs. Unlike many amid Lebanon’s financial crash, she can afford them—they just aren’t there. To get by, her 85-year-old grandfather is substituting his medicine with more pills of a smaller concentration to reach his dosage. That too could run out soon. Drugs for everything from diabetes and blood pressure to anti-depressants and fever pills used in COVID-19 treatment have disappeared from shelves around Lebanon. Officials and pharmacists say the shortage was exacerbated by panic buying and hoarding after the Central Bank governor said that with foreign reserves running low, the government won’t be able to keep up subsidies, including on drugs. That announcement “caused a storm, an earthquake,” said Ghassan al-Amin, head of the pharmacist syndicate. Lebanese now scour the country and beyond for crucial medications. The elderly ask around religious charities and aid groups. Family members plead on social media or travel to neighboring Syria. Expats are sending in donations. It’s the newest stage in the economic collapse of this country of 5 million, once a regional hub for banking, real estate and medical services. More than half the population has been pushed into poverty and people’s savings have lost value. Public debt is crippling, and the local currency plunged, losing nearly 80% of its value. The health sector is buckling under the financial strain and coronavirus pandemic.
‘Countdown to catastrophe’ in Yemen as U.N. warns of famine—again (Reuters) Millions of men, women and children in war-torn Yemen are facing famine—again, top United Nations officials warned on Wednesday as they appealed for more money to prevent it—again. “We are on a countdown right now to a catastrophe,” U.N. food chief David Beasley told the U.N. Security Council. “We have been here before ... We did almost the same dog-and-pony show. We sounded the alarm then.” The United Nations describes Yemen as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with 80% of the people in need of help. “If we choose to look away, there’s no doubt in my mind Yemen will be plunged into a devastating famine within a few short months,” Beasley told the 15-member council. In late 2017, U.N. aid chief Mark Lowcock warned that Yemen was then facing “the largest famine the world has seen for many decades with millions of victims”. “We prevented famine two years ago,” Lowcock told the Security Council on Wednesday. “More money for the aid operation is the quickest and most efficient way to support famine prevention efforts right now.”

Saara Aalto - “Monsters” 25th place
youtube
Ugh, ugh, ugh.
Oh man, I really don’t want to be writing about Saara right now. On one hand, I feel like her greatness is pretty self-evident... yet on the other, Saara is SO underappreciated that I will have to explain it in pain-staking detail and ugh, I’m not looking forward to this. I DIDN’T BECOME A TEACHER TO TAKE MY JOB BACK HOME.
Anyway, Saara. Talk about an emotionally abusive entrant-audience relationship. During the bad old days, she was the runaway fave, but now it seems like a long-lost memory from before the Mushroom War. And then, the support she had evaporated over the course of one UMK finale and she INSTANTLY became the most underappreciated act we’ve had... in the past few years at least. Tenth is a much more representative result of what she was than fucking SECOND LAST IN THE FINALE X__X
Tumblr media
To be fair, I wasn’t surprised that people eventually turned against Saara, because Holy Trifectia of “Sexually confident LGBT woman” + “a ‘valley girl on helium’ general affect + “uses a neigh-like laugh as punctuation”, (all of which are amazing traits) but... I did NOT expect a literal whiplash from “YASSS QUEEN SAARA!!! MONSTER IS THE BEST BOP EVER, BOW DOWN, PEONS” to “ew we actually hate this now. die Saara”, like wtf? STOP DOUSING THE PERFECT IMAGE OF OUR NOT-LUMPY SPACE PRINCESS WITH UNTRUTH URINE, YOU VINEGAR-PISSING CRETINS!!!!
But alas, the fandom went too far and, as the saying goes, there was no way back, no way back, dooming Saara to a second-to-last finish in the finale.
So was “Monsters” really that bad?
Tumblr media
Fuck no. Saara never stopped being awesome and that’s the tea. I suspect that people had massive expectations of “Monsters” and yes, well, massive expectations only lead to massive disappointment. That is not Saara’s fucking fault though. When “Monsters” was presented in its larval form and didn’t meet The Unrealistic Expectations the fan community had bestowed upon it, they started smashing the statues and defacing the frescos. Eurofags are flaky dingbats with the attention span of a walnut, what else is new?
Tumblr media
Whatever though, because *I* never stopped loving "Monsters”. It’s just so delightfully Saara.  “Monsters” very much carries her signature: it’s a fun, uptempo song with a relatable, positive message about finding confidence in oneself with lavish, but tasteful staging. It was a spectacle and that’s what Eurovision should be about.
Tumblr media
Aside from the above, I also really, really fucking admired Saara’s attitude throughout the entire process. She had an agonizing downfall (”agonizing” in that it wasn’t sudden, but spread out over three excruciating months), was generally met with dismisssal and indifference and had to deal with hordes of skeptic "journalists" and Ewtubers who said she was even LUCKY to advance.... and yet, in spite of all adversity, she continued to give it her all, put in loads of effort into her act and remained positively chipper. What a woman. You know, “Monsters”, may be about making peace with metaphorical demons, and Saara showed exactly the spirit needed to make this happen. A role model to us all!!!!! Why didn’t this earth angel win again? Oh right, Finland. Got it. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Footnotes
1. I’m a teacher trainee, so the comment about “taking my job home with me” is highly sarcastic. Half of my job *is* working from home, after all.
2. I don’t think “Domino” would’ve been a bad choice for Finland, but it’s also significantly safer and you know what I think about picking the “safe” entry.
3. That said, “Domino” is generally echoed as the best choice and I do think it’s largely down to it being ignored before the UMK finale. If you have no expectations, you’re more likely to be impressed, after all.
4. I’m kinda at peace with Saara’s final placement. Second place clearly wasn’t going to happen, so second-to-last is the next most Saara Slot I can think of. AT LEAST SHE WASN’T BLACKBIRDED. *FiestaTrioJingle*

How new robots will help scout the seas for mines
When it comes to clearing the ocean of explosives, the British Royal Navy is turning to robots. Announced April 12, the Ministry of Defense is awarding £32 million (about $42 million) to Dorset-based company Atlas Elektronik to give the fleet an “autonomous mine-hunting capability.” Employing robots to hunt and clear the sea of naval mines should make waterways useful for military missions and safe for commercial and civilian use afterwards.
“The threat posed by sea mines is constantly evolving,” said Simon Bollom, CEO of the UK’s Defence Equipment and Support Board, in a statement.
To meet this changing threat, the Royal Navy is acquiring a total of nine robotic vehicles, equipped with synthetic aperture sonar and advanced software. The robots, known as Medium Autonomous Underwater Vessels once in service, are based on Atlas Elektronik’s SeaCat, a modular robot with a torpedo-shaped body and a range of sensors and systems it can mount.
The SeaCat can operate in shallow waters, less than 7 feet deep, by moving along the surface, and it can reach depths of up to 1,970 feet under the surface, traveling as far as 23 miles autonomously. The base model of the SeaCat can operate for up to 10 hours under water, traveling as fast as 3.5 mph. Synthetic aperture sonar offers higher resolution images of objects underwater, making it useful for both geographic surveying and mine detection.
The threat of mines is not theoretical. In late March, Turkish military divers defused a naval mine that had drifted towards its Black Sea coast. A Russian intelligence agency accused the mine of being Ukrainian, while Ukraine’s government called the claim misinformation. The explosive was identified only as an old type of mine, which means it could be from a prior conflict, or an old weapon pressed into service in the recent war.
The SeaCat. Atlas Elektronik
A terrible thing that waits
Like landmines, sea mines are an explosive paired with a trigger, allowing the weapons to wait until a certain condition is met before detonating. In war, sea mines are placed, like landmines, to obstruct passage through a crucial area, making any attempt to escape a mined harbor or cross a mined strait an exercise in explosive hazard.
Modern sea mines date back to the 1870s, when engineers figured out how to keep a trigger intact without the sea eroding it. These mines—explosive spheres with protruding rods—would trigger when a ship collided with the rod, breaking a vial inside and setting off an electrical charge. The mines would wait until a ship collided with the trigger rod, floating on or below the surface of the water and often anchored in place to prevent drift.
Once engineers solved the problem of creating an explosive that could wait at sea, navies had to figure out how to clear those explosives from the water safely. Over 100 years ago, in “The Making of a Submarine Mine” in the January 1916 Popular Science, the magazine discussed methods of making short-duration mines, as well as defusing already-placed mines with electrical fuses.
Before mines can be defused, they must be found. This was initially the work of small motorboats, though the work is dangerous and risks the lives of human crew. Mines also become more sophisticated over time. Before World War I concluded, sea mines could trigger on sound, magnetism, or changes in water flow. Because mines from all eras can persist in the ocean, modern mine clearing has to accommodate for old and modern triggers.
Remote workers
Like with the mine in Turkey, underwater explosives are often defused by teams of human divers. This work combines the hazards of on-ground explosive disposal with the additional difficulty of being underwater, with visibility limited depending on the depth and condition of the sea. It’s a job people have outsourced to robots as much as they possibly can, trusting remotely operated machines to take on the risk at distance from human operators.
The United Kingdom, together with France, has already invested in multiple robots that can defuse mines once located. Once found and tracked, a specific mine-defusing robot can be launched to place an explosive on the surface of the mine, before retreating so the new explosive can detonate the found mine.
What the Royal Navy’s new robots will do is improve the process of finding and neutralizing mines, scanning and patrolling the sea on their own autonomous navigation. This saves the human labor for operating remote robots and managing detonations, as the new craft scan the ocean to find any explosives still in the water.
As sea mines continue to find utility in war, and even more as mines continue to persist long after wars end, navies being able to clear the oceans of explosive detritus will prevent tragedy at sea.

It's nearly unheard of that a television series inspires a nationwide law that targets international corruption, money laundering and organized crime.
But that's what happened in the UK as a result of the James Norton-fronted drama McMafia, an eight-part series currently airing in the U.S. on AMC after completing its British run in mid-February.
McMafia delves into the incredibly profitable underworld of criminal activity including sex trafficking, drug dealing and money laundering and how the tempting tentacles of corruption reach into the highest levels of finance and government through the machinations of global organized crime.
Norton plays the British-raised, Ivy League-educated Alex Godman, the scion of a connected Russian family who moved to England to legitimize themselves after some shady dealings in the old country. He runs a London-based hedge fund, is engaged to his girlfriend, played by Juliet Rylance, is a model son to his parents and a loving brother to a troubled sister. In other words, the perfect hero, until he gets drawn into a series of scary scenarios that see him evolve from proverbial choirboy to criminal.
McMafia's tales of intrigue kick into high gear with the murder of Godman's uncle Boris, who, unlike the rest of the family, is still actively involved in the Russian mob.
To avenge the killing, Godman teams up with a powerful Russian-born Israeli businessman and politician, Semiyon Kleiman (David Strathairn) to battle the crime boss behind the killing, a brutal kingpin known as Vadim. Kleiman and Godman, first introduced by Uncle Boris and after overcoming their initial suspicions of each other, develop a sort of father-son relationship and conspire to take territories, including ports in India and Croatia, where Vadim has a "free pass" to ply his illegal commerce—and thus, take him down.
Some have compared the character of Alex Godman to that of The Godfather's Michael Corleone, the once-legitimate businessman who becomes the powerful head of a massive criminal enterprise.
But unlike The Godfather films, which were based on Mario Puzo's best-selling novel, McMafia is inspired by investigative journalism. The series is based on the 2008 nonfiction book McMafia: A Journey Through the Global Criminal Underworld by Misha Glenny, who also serves as an executive producer.
The crime drama was created by Hossein Amini and James Watkins and is a coproduction of the BBC, AMC and Cuba Pictures. The series premiered in the United Kingdom on January 1 and created a huge amount of buzz, including the aforementioned "McMafia Law," more formally known as the Unexplained Wealth Order.
It requires that rich people who come to Great Britain from elsewhere must prove the legitimacy of their wealth. If found to be acquired from illegal activity, their assets can be seized and liquidated, with the money going to law enforcement. Great Britain's National Crime Agency estimates that £90 billion a year (about $126.5 billion) is now being laundered in the UK, twice the amount of the nation's entire defense budget.
The problem is so severe that UK security minister Ben Wallace recently wrote an op-ed in The Sunnewspaper which stated, "McMafia has brought home to millions of viewers the nature of serious and organized crime in the 21st Century. Sharp suited people swan around the nation's capital while all along they head up networks that trade on the back of the misery and suffering of others. It is time the flashy McMafia mob felt the long arm of the law."
Already, two £11 million London mansions, believed to be bought with "dirty money," were seized by court order in February.
Norton's Godman is in almost every scene of McMafia, whose story unfolds in multiple picturesque international locations including Belize, Istanbul, Belgrade, London, Prague, Zagreb, Cairo, Qatar, Russia and Israel.
"Alex Godman is not necessarily always likeable, but James brought such a sense of humanity, especially in scenes with his family, that counterbalanced the coldness of the character," says Watkins, who directed all eight episodes.
"James was very brave in committing to such a withheld character. In creating the antiheroic Alex Godman, we wanted to maintain a deliberate ambiguity as to his motivations. Is he acting out of revenge or out of survival? Or, somewhere within him, seen in occasional glimpses, is there a will to power at work, a seduction by the dark side?
"James is a very attuned actor and worked forensically at finding those little micro-details. One of the wonderful things about James's performance is the very subtle way in which he lets emotion leak through the mask, especially in the last episodes as events spiral out of control."
The 32-year-old Norton is well-known in the UK after leading roles in numerous prestige productions including War & Peace, Grantchester and Happy Valley. He also co-starred in last year's reboot of the feature film Flatliners.
Norton will appear again on the big screen toplining director Agnieszka Holland's Gareth Jones as the title character, a Welsh journalist who exposed genocide in the Stalinist Soviet Union, secured access to Hitler and Goebbels and was murdered in 1935.
We caught up with Norton by phone on location for the film in Ukraine where he said he was shivering in -15°C (5°F ) weather. The conversation was anything but chilly as we explored facets of his career and the echoes of McMafia in real life.
Tell us about the evolution of your character Alex Godman on McMafia.
It was a most exciting part to play with. During 150 days, we shot out of sequence and it was a huge challenge. Most of the conversations about Alex revolved around where we were in his arc- from clean-living man and golden boy to his fiancé Rebecca, and then how he becomes a linchpin in shady deals with Mafias.
James [Watkins] and I would try to understand his motives. We wanted to leave a lot of it open, to leave muddy his motives. You can claim to understand them but there are a myriad of reasons.
We were clear about protecting his family and then making a choice as he began moving away from fortuitous, virtuous reasons to avarice. While the creators- and audiences- are realizing Alex was being sucked in, Alex didn't realize it soon enough. Suddenly he surprised himself, and he's loving it, and it's incredibly sexy and seductive.
It was a layered role. His headspace doesn't ever stop giving you revelations about his relationship with his father and fiancé, and the associated Russians with inherent criminality. But there were a lot of commentators quick to make the connection about him running away [from organized crime] and then being seduced. It was a joy to play, right until the end of the last hour.
Many of your scenes are with David Strathairn. Let's talk about his character's magnetism, and how you are drawn into his nefarious agenda and the plot to destroy Vadim.
David's a master, and the journey Alex is on is incredibly defined by his relationship with Semiyon. He becomes almost like Alex's moral compass, kind of like Rebecca. Semiyon sort of sets it up that if he wants to protect his family, he has to take on Vadim. He became a dark, sinister individual but also becomes a paternal figure. To have a relationship with Vadim—they're so different, and corrupt, but they have their allies, children, lovers and they're not stock villains.
David played it beautifully, a real character, a likeable one if not more sinister. He's a politician we all recognize, progressive and yet he's subversive and deals in human trafficking. He brought home how close these politicians are to corruption.
Off set, David was wonderful. We went walking and swimming along the Croatian coastline. He's a lover of life and I loved hanging out with him.
That sounds fun, but what are some of the most challenging and memorable scenes that you have shot in the series?
We shot in Croatia, Serbia and London in very glamorous locations but I didn't get to Mumbai. One location was a beautifully landscaped villa with a beautiful mosaic ceiling – just unbelievably extravagant in the South of France, yet nearby was extraordinary poverty. Some of the scenes, particularly with David, felt like mini pieces of theater. James gave us time to mine those scenes.
The scenes with the parents were wonderful to play, so subtle and with the human subject so rich. With Vadim, when we crossed paths in the airport lounge, it was like punctuation marks on our respective journeys. All the other storylines were leading to this. The scene's very charged, halfway through the shoot, crackling and informed.
It was wonderful, and the reason you do this, when the story and situation take on a life on their own and memories and experiences inform it. It's like a mini explosion.
With Rebecca, the first thing we shot was the apartment stuff between them in the first week. It was incredibly emotionally charged material, when she moves out after she confronts him about travel. It was a sad day, and it was harder because we didn't have the backstory. On Alex's journey, she represents where he comes from, and you suddenly remember where he was with her. The tragedy is he does set out to protect her and it's gone way too far.
The family elements are especially resonant within McMafia - and Alex is always right in the middle of everything.
The family element allows us to explore the man, seduced by the subversive and the dark side. The family is a way of seeing that component. He ends up as a gangster, but he's ultimately a family man, a good son and brother. In one of the most tragic, heartbreaking scenes he's asked to cut loose his dad, Dmitri – it's almost self-sacrifice. I have a close relationship with my own father, and that day Alex was willing to sabotage his family was difficult.
Faye Marsay, Aleksey Serebryakov, Mariya Shukshina-- we become a real family. There was a concentrated, really fun sense of unity. All of us were so invested in the warmth and affection both and off camera, and they are all such great actors. Aleksey came in with different versions, using the Stanislavski method. We Brits were far too polite.
Aleksey would come in and say, "No, we do it like this." When Dmitri says goodbye to his brother in the morgue, he paced around and genuinely threw up in the sink. It was extraordinary.
You have had key roles in a number of series including Grantchester, Happy Valley and War & Peace. What have you learned from these experiences? Is there a throughline amongst these characters?
You learn through every role, with different headspaces, time periods and genders, you get to learn and have an emotional connection. I would hate to be typecast. If there is a throughline, the characters are very switched on and inquisitive - kind of trying to work it all out or not take life for granted. They're on some quest to understand it. Maybe I am completely confused, but they're all thinking and in existential angst.
Can you tell us a little bit about your upcoming starring role in Gareth Jones with Agnieszka Holland?
Gareth knew his place, and he's on an incredible journey but also on a mission. It's a true story about a young journalist, one of the first to interview Hitler in 1932 just at the emergence of Nazi-ism. He describes being on a plane with Goebbels, and then back home to the UK where he tells the British government about the emergence of totalitarianism. They dismiss this and of course we know what happens later.
Then he takes on a mission to Stalin's USSR. He was beginning to have doubts about Communism. He decided to check out the numbers and how they're paying for planes, etc. He was on a tour, went rogue and discovered Stalin's extortion at the expense of millions of lives. At home, they accused him of lying, "fake news" and being inflammatory.
It's terrifying in 1933 when they had so much less access to communications. In Ukraine, Stalin was able to get away it and millions died [as a result of famine]. Now we are using the same language. It's a very relevant story, what is truth and what is agenda. We feel a responsibility to respect his story. It's exciting, and I'm really enjoying it.
As McMafia unfolds, what do you hope viewers take away from it?
You want the work to be entertaining as we're in the business of entertaining people. But with the last few years of Brexit, Trump and populist right-wing governments coming to power, and corporations being so powerful, corruption is no long self-contained. It's straddling everything, and we're in unknown territory.
I know in the UK they want to know what that corruption looks like. In the days of The Sopranos and The Godfather, organized crime contained an element of romanticism but did not really affect us. For a show to provide understanding of financial corruption is important, to see how a hedge fund manager facilitates a drug deal. Aside from the human-driven drama, it is also about corruption and transparency, and will hopefully bring some clarity.
With the UK McMafia Law, suddenly we are part of a much larger conversation, more pertinent and crucial. I hope for those people in the audience who are fully engaged and hungry for clarify that this is a perfect show.

A  career survey is a huge milestone for any artist, so for Stanislava Pinchuk (formerly known by the nickname Miso), to achieve this at 32 years of age, is nothing short of extraordinary.
Heide Museum of Modern Art is hosting the Ukrainian-Australian artist’s first career survey to date. Titled Terra Data, the exhibition features 40 key works from the past five years.
Stanislava’s art practice spans multiple mediums, but she’s perhaps best known for her paper-based pinhole works depicting geographical data, rendered using an etching burin and hand mallet. Beginning with recording war zones in her home country, Stanislava has since made a series of works centred around the Fukushima and Chernobyl nuclear exclusion zones, and the Calais ‘Jungle’ Migrant Camp in France.
Stanislava shared with us how this exhibition came to be, and the process involved in developing her labour-intensive artwork.
How long have you been plotting the changing topographies of war and conflict zones, and what compels you to do so?
I first began this exact work in 2015 in response to the beginning of the civil war in Ukraine. I’m from the eastern border, and it was an incredibly difficult thing to see. It was definitely not something that I expected to see in my lifetime, and at the time, it felt like a rupture in every way. I think it set something really urgent to what I wanted to make, and how I wanted to make it. So, I made the first series really quickly, and honestly, it was only later I understood what it meant, and really began to wrestle with the questions that the body of work opened up.
I was 27 then, and I’m 32 now. It’s pretty incredible to think of how much that first project has changed my life over the last five years, and see it all in the same place for the first time.
How are your works created?
Every project has been a little different with mapping. A lot of the surveying has been incredibly limited with access or time – or safety for fieldwork – or the parameters of a nuclear zone, for example.
For most of the works in the exhibition, the data surveying has been me on the ground alone, mapping height-fields, and photographing back-up references in a pretty old-school way. I’ve found that the most reliable, actually!
One body of work was mapped with Geiger counters measuring radioactivity levels in different types of ground, rather than the topography of the soil itself. Another project had airspace access for a drone!
Regardless, all collected data is mostly plotted into 3D modelling software later, and then enmeshed with textile skins.
Where are your artworks typically created?
Wherever I can! I can’t be too fussy, but a big sturdy table, good natural light, and a laptop with generous RAM are about as good as it gets. Over the past five years, my works were made across a few continents and a few studios – you just make do with the best you have at any time.
Your art practice encompasses drawing, installation, tattooing, film & sculpture. What attracts you to each of these mediums?
I love the depths of every medium, and I find their limits always push me into thinking of something else. Restrictions are actually really good like that for creativity. But more than anything, I’ve really tried to find a place in my practice that is comfortable about seeking out the right medium for the right idea, even if that’s new or scary to me.
Are you a self-taught artist?
I am, I suppose, in that I never went to art school. I do however have a degree in philosophy and art history, which I think laid a really good foundation as far as understanding histories of thought and being able to place and link ideas in a thorough way.
How does it feel to have a career survey of your work exhibited at Heide?
It feels like there’s only one answer – it feels really incredible. Not just to have my first career survey in the first place, but also in my adopted hometown, feels like a really beautiful moment in time. It is not something I could have ever imagined happening, and especially not at 32.
Like many other people in this city, I have always found so much magic in the Heide II building, and even now, after a billion meetings and site visits, it honestly never, ever loses its power. Even if you walk in tired or anxious, or annoyed, the building really lifts you up every time. And if it’s empty, it takes about 30 seconds before you start imagining that it’s your own house!
Bar six drawings, none of this work has ever been exhibited in Naarm (Melbourne) before. I’m a few months away from moving back to Sarajevo for good, so it feels like a really beautiful departure, reflection and celebration here too! To look back before a big change ahead.
What can people expect from ‘Terra Data’?
This show has been in development for some 18 months, and delayed three times due to the pandemic! It’s a career survey that spans the last five years of my practice, with topographic surveying projects from Ukraine’s eastern borders, and Kyiv, Fukushima, Chernobyl and Calais. I’ve never seen these works in the same room together before, and I can’t wait for what that might feel like.

So I, as an American citizen in poverty, live among a group of adults that parental figures basically half raised and there is a lot of very fucking important knowledge missing here because of it. Some of these things I’ve mentioned before but here are some things from the street, from life, all adults need to know
Your regular tire pressure should be at 32 psi
Donuts, temp tires, are usually higher pressure of 60 psi, it is crucial that you do not mix these numbers and underpressurize a donut
Before you add any kind of oil to your vehicle, please google the make and model so that you put the correct oil/synthetics fluid to run that model
It is absolutely pointless to do an oil change without changing the filter
When your turn signal blinks rapidly in your vehicle it means a light has went out
I absolutely implore everyone reading this to NOT EVER take your tires to a quick shop like Walmart or something similar that usually employs 18 year old happy to use a pneumatic torque drill and they almost ALWAYS strip your lug nuts -
AT ANY POINT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU ARE OPERATING A DRILL YOU MUST START THE SCREW/NUT BY HAND otherwise the device will absolutely strip and destroy your equipment
If you need metal to stay in place for a long period of time and need to perhaps more secure, you can seek out Loctite. Blue loctite is temporary, red loctite is designed to be put on screw/bolt and never be removed again
If you are working on any kind of hydronic or pneumatic equipment, you must NEVER do metal on metal, you must seek teflon tape or pipe dope
Do NOT mix any kind of cleaning chemicals in your home, it is crucial that you watch what chemicals are being used while you clean, mixing things like Amonia (windex) and Bleach will cause Mustard Gas, we on the same page?
If at any point in your life you choose to “speedball” there is absolutely nothing safe about this, but I advice that you never mix a Benzo (Valium, klon, Zanny) with a Pain Killer - this is a combination of death. I implore if you ever choose this route to mix something like Hydros or Percs as they are not really depressants with a Upper, this is absolutely not a suggestion at all, nothing about this is safe, but the safest route is mixing those drugs
Please, if you ever choose to do Coke or Blow, do NOT drink alcohol with it - you will continue to drink unaffected until your in the hospital because of the effects of the speed
Ecstasy is Molly or Coke based, if you ever choose this route in your life, I would advice you ask who you’re receiving it from what is inside
In the legal system of the United States the only thing that matters is what’s on paper. If you ever need to take legal actions I advice everyone to remember this, when apply for fssa or HUD - legal addresses and a paper trail are the only thing that matters to these people. To get something certified so that someone cannot Deny reviving something is a process you can request from any United States postal service, they will stamp it and make the person sign that they received this paper and if this is ever needed for a fee of about five dollars
Cigarettes are literally the most tainted form of tobacco - if you ever switch from smoke two pack a day to rolling real bagged tobacco from a shop please keep in mind the tobacco in a bag is at least five percent more pure than anything in a cigarette and you will absolutely give yourself nicotine poisoning if you attempt to smoke at the same rate
If you want to consume tobacco “safely” I strongly suggest cigars or rolling tobacco of choice, these items have so many less chemicals to cause the cell malfunction that we call cancer
If you have smoked for the last fifty years, I strongly suggest not attempting to move on to VAPING materials, this will literally just add water to the mountain of chemicals already built in your lungs and weigh them down
Tornados can literally only be formed with Walll Clouds, if you just see some clouds hanging down during a storm, it is not a twister, it has to have a certain chemical combination to create this natural monster, my step dad lead and created the ball state storm chase team
Anti-inflamatories and Acetaminophen are completely different chemicals and cause completely different things. Any kind of Motrin, Ibrophen, Melixicam - all of that is a Anti-Infalmatory and is made to bring swelling and fevers down, these chemicals strongly effect the stomach, it is absolutely crucial that you eat before taking them, and if you ever attempt to take too many, they will destroy the lining of your stomach (if you attempt suicide on an anti-inflammatory or Asprin, you will generally fail, they will rush you to the ER when you can no longer vomit and then pump your stomach and you will never be able to eat certain groups of food again- bad choice ) Acetaminophen which is Tylonel, and in Hydrocodone and Percocet, is simply just a pain killer, and this drug will effect your liver if taken continuously or in large amounts, it is absolutely crucial that you drink minimally on these as they will cause you to vomit uncontrollably and as i said they will destroy your liver, it is absolutely shameful that currently in the United States healthcare system that because adults choose to abuse mediations they deny people in need of serious pain killers and force them to pop 18 tylonel a day and therefore cause them to destroy their livers in an attempt to get out of pain —- you can absolutely take Motrin and tylonel together
FBI stands for Federal Beurocrat of Investigation- that means that this branch of government exist to investigate issues inside the boarders of the United States, such as missing persons cases and police brutality
CIA stands for Centeral Intelligence Agency and therefore is the agency that brings in intelligence from outside of the nation, threats from our enemies
The fall of the USSR happened because after decades of threatening the Western World with Nuclar Fallout the United States and 23 European countries came together to forum something called NATO that combines the intelligence a military power of the United States and most of Europe - this group decided the best way to destroy the Soviet Hold was to convince the Ukraine to separate from Communist reign, we promised Ukraine absolutely anything they could possibly need to maintain independence from Soviet Russia if we could sit outside the wall and watch the Russians. I am goin to take this moment to say that the fucking piece of shit in office right now has almost undone decades of work right now by withholding funds from the Ukraine as Putins BITCH and therefore aiding the new rise of the USSR
Genetically Modified Food is literally everywhere, in fact in most cases its less safe to seek food without these, these modifications often keep the rather unfriendly parts of our food from actually effecting us
In the Midwest if someone ask you for a Square, they are asking for a Menthol Cigarette
90% of women addicted to alcohol were sexually assaulted as children, almost all male heroin addicts were also molested as children, and our justice system happily punish the addicts and not the assailants
These are all the things off the top of my head i have explained to adults my age that simply were never given the time of day
Oh
And Jeffery Epstein didnt kill himself

100 Times Hotels Creativity Surprised Their Guests Bring Give Hearty Chuckle
Customers should be treated like kings and queens. They should be pampered, treated to large doses of good humor, and given creative quality of life upgrades that make all the difference. This is the philosophy some hotels have. And it’s obvious how much they love their guests.
Some hotels go the extra mile to make their customers’ stay that much more pleasant. From bed forts and ‘spouse disposal units’ to hilarious menus and tiny takeaway bags for tiny soap, these are the things that make you want to visit again and again. Apegeo created this awesome list of clever ideas and unique touches that hotels have introduced. These Hotels Creativity will bring a smile to your face, give you a hearty chuckle, and make you go ‘wow, how didn’t I think of that?’ So keep on scrolling, share the best with your friends, and upvote the best pictures! My personal favorite is the bed fort (I know what I’m building at home tonight) — what about yours?

Courtesy of Hospitality School, here are several ‘Golden Rules’ that each and every hotelier worth their salt should follow. That is, if they want to be proud of what they do, want their business to boom, and their guests to grace their doorstep once again.
Looking like a professional goes a long way in the hospitality business. That means dressing nicely, taking care of your hygiene and smiling brightly. It’s also vital that the way you talk to your customers be sincere — they can spot it if you’re being fake in an instant. What’s more, keeping your guests’ private life private is of utmost importance, as is helping them with everything and anything they might need. Finally, never, ever ignore complaints. Not even small ones.

However, the rules of hospitality are slowly changing over time, as Marcel Thoma, the General Manager of The Upper House hotel in Hong Kong told Euronews: “Twenty years ago, there were scripts and standards. And it was the same every day. These days, we expect the wait staff to be psychiatrists. Now, some guests want to be left alone; maybe you don’t refill their coffee because they’re in a meeting and concentrating hard. We like to see ourselves as hosts, not service providers. For that, you must give your staff the freedom to be spontaneous.”

Thoma also explained how staff members can help in unexpected ways. “For example, we once had a guest come downstairs and say, I want to go hiking but I’m alone and don’t know how to go hiking in Hong Kong. We had a staff who loves hiking and said, ‘Madame, I know a beautiful trail. Why don’t we go hiking together tomorrow, if you’d like me to come along with you?’ So, they went hiking together. In a traditional hotel, they would say, ‘We’re not paying you to go hiking! You’re paid to check in and check out guests.’”

A grieving father said on Sunday he had “never wanted” his “soft and loving” daughter to be on a plane that crashed in Ethiopia, killing all 157 passengers and crew onboard. Joanna Toole was one of seven Britons who perished when a Boeing 737 Max-8 jet, which was only months old, crashed just six minutes after take off. The US aircraft giant launched an investigation amid growing concern over the passenger jet’s design. The same model had crashed in Indonesia less than five months ago, killing all 189 people onboard. The cause of Sunday's crash is still unclear but the pilot of Ethiopia airlines flight ET302 reported difficulties shortly after taking off from Addis Ababa en route to the Kenyan capital Nairobi. It has also emerged that the US Department of State had released a security alert on March 8, advising all US government travellers “not to arrive or depart [Addis Ababa’s] Bole International Airport on March 10” although this advice was rescinded a day later.  The family of Joanna Toole, who grew up in Exmouth, have been informed that she was on board an Ethiopia Airlines plane which crashed shortly after take off en route to Nairobi in Kenya. Ms Toole, 36, from Exmouth in Devon, was due to attend the United Nations Environment Assembly starting in Nairobi. She was, her father said, a committed environmentalist and animal lover who worked for the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation. “Joanna was a very soft and loving person,” said her father Adrian Toole, speaking to DevonLive website. “She had never really wanted to do anything else but work in animal welfare since she was a child. “Somehow that work took her into the international sphere... That involves a lot of travelling around the world - although personally I never wanted her to be on a single one of those planes... Up until now she had been lucky.” Ms Toole’s partner, who lived with her in Rome, had telephoned her father to inform him she was on the flight while her employers described her as “a wonderful human being”. China 'grounds Boeing 737 Max jets' The crash raises serious questions over the design of the Boeing aircraft and in particular its anti-stall mechanism. Within the first few minutes after take-off the plane’s vertical speed, the rate of climb or descent, varied dramatically. Its ‘unstable’ vertical speed, according to data from the flight-tracking website flightradar24, went from 2,624 feet per minute to -1216, suggesting the plane rose and fell rapidly in the minutes before it plunged into scrubland. Vertical speed should remain stable - or else increase - after take off. As the aviation industry reeled from the latest tragedy, China's aviation regulator has ordered domestic airlines to suspend their Boeing 737 Max aircraft. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said local carriers had until 6 pm local time to ground the 96 jets of that model that they operate. Ceremony marking 1st delivery of Boeing 737 Max 8 airplane to Air China in Zhoushan Credit: Reuters The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive in November last year, in relation to one of the flight systems on the Boeing 737-8 and 737-9 series of aircraft. That was published following the crash of the Lion Air flight 610 - another Boeing 737 Max 8 - on October 29.  The FAA directive warned that an "angle of attack" censor, which is supposed to help to prevent a plane from stalling, could lead to an “excessive nose-down attitude, significant altitude loss, and possible impact with the terrain”. This “unsafe condition... is likely to exist or develop” in the Boeing 737-8 and 737-9 designs, the directive concluded.  Ethiopia plane crash Photographs from the scene showed the devastation caused by the crash with harrowing images of body parts covered up by plastic bodybags scattered in the wake of the crash at 8.44am local time.  Boeing announced it would send a technical assistance team to the site of the crash. It said it is postponing the “external debut” of its 777X model and related media events scheduled for this week because of the accident. There is no change to the plane’s schedule or progress, Boeing said. French-British woman among the victims Kenya’s transport secretary James Macharia told reporters there were nationals from at least 35 different countries on board, including the seven British passengers. It is thought to be the biggest loss of life of Britons in a passenger jet crash since the shooting down of MH-17 over Ukraine in 2014. A French-British polar tourism expert has been named in Norwegian media as one of those to have died in the crash. Sarah Auffret was an environmental agent for the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators. "Words cannot describe the sorrow and despair we feel. We have lost a true friend and beloved colleague," a statement from the Norwegian firm said. Among the 32 Kenyans who lost their lives was Joseph Kuria Waithaka, 55, who had lived in Hull for more than a decade working for the probation service and was travelling back to the region after visiting his wife and children, who still live in the UK. Joseph Waithaka has been identified by the WFP as a victim of the Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 His son Ben Kuria said: “My dad was a private man but he also had a pastoral heart. He really championed people... he really rooted for his children.” His daughter Zipporah Kuria tweeted that her father “was the first man I ever loved. Believed in my dreams more than I ever could. Rest in peace daddy.” There were also eight Americans and 18 Canadians among the dead. Theresa May said she was “deeply saddened to hear of the devastating loss of life following the plane crash in Ethiopia”.  In a statement, the prime minister said: “At this very difficult time my thoughts are with the families and friends of the British citizens on board and all those affected by this tragic incident.” As many as 50 people onboard were thought to be heading for the same UN conference. The UN confirmed a number of its staff had died while the World Food Programme said it was "mourning" the loss of its employees. Those included the one Irish victim who was named as Michael Ryan. Among those killed were the wife and two children of the Slovakian MP Anton Hrnko while hospitality company Tamarind Group said its chief executive Jonathan Seex, a Kenyan national, also died.  Lucky escape A Greek man said he would have been the 150th passenger on the plane, except he arrived two minutes late for the flight. "I was mad because nobody helped me to reach the gate on time," Antonis Mavropoulos said in a Facebook post entitled "My lucky day" in which he includes a photo of his ticket. Mavropoulos, president of the International Solid Waste Association, a non-profit organisation, was travelling to Nairobi to attend the annual assembly of the UN Environment Programme, according to Athens News Agency. He booked a later flight but was then prevented from boarding by airport staff. "They led me to the police station of the airport. The officer told me not to protest but to pray to God because I was the only passenger that didn't board the ET 302 flight that was lost," Mavropoulos said in his post in which he admits being in shock. The airport authorities explained that they wanted to question him because he was the only passenger booked onto the doomed flight who wasn't on board. "They said they couldn't let me go before cross-checking my identity, the reason I hadn't boarded the plane etc." Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Tewolde Medhin, visited the scene of the crash where emergency worker Lenora Ayana told The Telegraph that officials were “having a hard time locating bodies with so much debris.”  'Everything is burnt down' The plane had taken off at 8:38am (0638 GMT) from Bole International Airport but lost contact six minutes later near Bishoftu, a town 37 miles southeast of Addis Ababa. The plane came down near the village of Tulu Fara. The pilot had sent out a distress call and was given the all clear to return. A massive crater could be seen at the crash site, with belongings and airplane parts scattered widely. An eyewitness told the BBC there was an intense fire when the plane crashed. “The blast and the fire were so strong that we couldn’t get near it,” he said. “Everything is burnt down.” At Nairobi airport, anxious relatives waited for news, many in tears and in distress. His sister is a nurse who he said had been in the Congo. “We are still expecting our loved one from Addis... we have just received news that there is a plane that has crashed. We can only hope that she is not on that flight.” Ethiopian Airlines confirmed it had bought the plane in November and it had “undergone a rigorous first check maintenance in February 2018.”  A statement from Boeing said the company was “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the passengers and crew on Ethiopian Airlines flight 302”, adding: “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the families and loved ones of the passengers and crew on board and stand ready to support the Ethiopian Airlines team.”  Safety experts cautioned against drawing too many comparisons between the two crashes until more is known about Sunday's disaster. The Ethiopian Airlines CEO "stated there were no defects prior to the flight, so it is hard to see any parallels with the Lion Air crash yet," said Harro Ranter, founder of the Aviation Safety Network, which compiles information about accidents worldwide. The last major accident involving an Ethiopian Airlines passenger plane was a Boeing 737-800 that exploded after taking off from Lebanon in 2010, killing 83 passengers and seven crew. The state-owned Ethiopian Airlines, widely considered the best-managed airline in Africa, calls itself the Continent's largest carrier and has ambitions of becoming the gateway to Africa. It has been expanding assertively, recently opening a route to Moscow and in January inaugurating a new passenger terminal in Addis Ababa to triple capacity.
