Book Blurb: Sumptuous and addictive, An Education in Malice is a dark academia tale of blood, secrets and insatiable hungers from S.T. Gibson, author of the cult hit A Dowry of Blood.
Deep in the forgotten hills of Massachusetts stands Saint Perpetua’s College. Isolated and ancient, it is not a place for timid girls. Here, secrets are currency, ambition is lifeblood, and strange ceremonies welcome students into the fold.
On her first day of class, Laura Sheridan is thrust into an intense academic rivalry with the beautiful and enigmatic Carmilla. Together, they are drawn into the confidence of their demanding poetry professor, De Lafontaine, who holds her own dark obsession with Carmilla.
But as their rivalry blossoms into something far more delicious, Laura must confront her own strange hungers. Tangled in a sinister game of politics, bloodthirsty professors and magic, Laura and Carmilla must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice in their ruthless pursuit of knowledge.

Review:
A dark academia sapphic story with a touch of Carmilla and vampires? I am all in. Saint Perpetua's College is an isolated and old college deep in the hills of Massachusetts and in this school there is a prestigious poetry program lead by a famous writer. Laura Sheridan is a new student who has just been accepted into the poetry program at Saint Perpetua and there she meets the stunning and mysterious Carmilla, a talented poet who has a strangely intimate relationship with their professor, De Lafontaine. Laura and Carmilla become academic rivals yet there is an obsession that is growing between them... and Laura begins to notice the dark obsession between Carmilla and De Lafontaine. The relationship between Carmilla and De Lafontaine is steeped in secrets, blood, and power dynamics. Laura also begins to find herself equally as obsessed with Carmilla as she's drawn into the strange relationship between her and their professor. De Lafontaine has her own secrets and agenda for the girls, but between the three of them, who what will come of their relationship and the obsessions that grow between them. This was a really fun dark academia sapphic story that gave A Lesson in Vengeance vibes (one of my favorite books) and I had a really fun time with this one because I also absolutely adore the Carmilla classic story. This was a fun mix of sapphic relationship, vampires, and dark academia! I would definitely recommend it for fans of the mentioned genres!
*Thanks Netgalley and Redhook Books, Redhook for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

What should be my fantasy series this year?
Every year I decide to just stick to one fantasy series to read (If i read too many at once, I forget half the lore!) Last year i've read the poppy war, and even though i'm definitely reading Babel later this year, I want to pick my yearly series as well.
I am kind of on the fence between two series, even though one of them isn't even finished yet hihi. But I take recommendations!!

Jack Reacher: Killing Floor- Lee Child
Tumblr media
Image taken from CBC
Rating: 4.1 / 5
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Killing Floor is the debut novel of prolific crime writer Lee Child and was originally published in March 1997.
This book introduces us to Jack Reacher, an ex-military man turned drifter, who finds himself in Georgia arrested for murder. Reacher needs to get to the bottom of this mystery and soon delves into the lives of the residents of the small town of Margrave
When beginning the story, it did start quite slowly as it was spent introducing necessary characters important to the plot and unfortunately, a majority of the characters were fairly forgettable and if not, slightly cliche. Nonetheless, the action described in the novel was incredible description and made it impossible to put the book down.
The slowly unravelling plot possesses suspense right up until the last page. What keeps the reader's interest is the type of crimes Child incorporated into the novel: it ranges from kidnapping to murder, all the way to fraud.
Our main character, Jack Reacher, is the narrator of the piece and we get to experience the action through his logical and analytical mind. Probably the most well-known feature of Reacher's thinking is his ability to study the opening scenes of an oncoming fight, he can analyse them in slow motion and is able to win 99% of the time. Child's to-the-point writing gives an extremely clear description of what Reacher is thinking and seeing. It helps the reader paint a perfect picture in their mind. For example, the motel fight sign, Roscoe's door caved in, and the barbershop shaving scene. The in-depth detail even goes as far as to describe the cars perfectly.
My main qualm with the book is the lack of personality to Reacher and no back story for the main character- the main focus seems to just be sex and action when the characters could have been explored a lot more. However, the villains in Killing Floor make up more than enough for the dearth of character development as they are exceedingly evil, making it almost impossible to trust anyone you are reading about.
Lee Child has created a whole world with this book series, and Killing Floor is an excellent gateway to the rest of the books. The characters may not be as detailed as I would have liked, but the excessive detail of scenes more than makes up for that and I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a bit of action.

Some random Massachusetts teacher found my old Reading Rec post on Ray Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian" from May 2021 and put it on their Schoology as a class assignment, I guess. I have no idea if this person follows me on any of my social media or if they read any of my other work? Do they realize the absolutely ridiculous impact this is having on my notes?

(This is the track of views per day for the past year btw)
Anyway. Uh. If you're reading this, I hope your class enjoyed the lesson today <3

This is such a cool read! I have never read a book by this author before, and I'm so happy that I got this chance to experience Gibson's writing.
So the story is amazing, and the writing is perfection. Laura, a "good girl" type who may harbor some carnal desires, starts college and immediately falls for senior Carmilla. Carmilla is in the same poetry seminar Laura is in. And, when she sees her beloved teacher pay attention to Laura (a new girl and a freshman at that!), immediate jealousy sparks, and this turns into just the best enemies-to-lovers read.
By the way, this book takes place in the 60s, and the author really made me feel that vibe through their writing and descriptions. I'm talking about word choice, things I imagine people would say at that time period.
The atmosphere was haunting and a perfect setup for this sapphic romance to bloom in the shadows and for Laura to learn the secret between Carmilla and their teacher.
I really enjoyed this and definitely recommend it!
Out February 13, 2024!
Thank you, Netgalley and Publisher, for this Arc!
