Ok idk if this has already been a blurb so if it has just ignore me but I can’t remember reading one about it lol. A Halloween blurb! Idk if Halloween is big in Canada where they’re from but maybe they don’t really celebrate but since Florence is from LA she loved Halloween growing up and makes them celebrate or something
Oh for sure! I’ve written one before and one in ABM itself but since it’s October 2020 I’ll throw out another just in time for Penelope’s first Halloween! :)
When Anything But Mine ended (not including the epilogue), we left off with Daniel freshly single and him and Florence in a strange state of friendship vs. raising two girls together vs. a whole mess of where they stood after such a crazy year. Regardless of living in a state of friendship purgatory, they were still close and Daniel was more than excited to spend another Halloween with Clementine and Florence and, now, baby Penelope.
Like the year before, Florence went over to the guys’ house near the university in the afternoon since trick-or-treating was much more fun in a neighbourhood rather than in an apartment building. Clementine was already dressed up – having insisted on what she wanted to be a good month in advance through persistent chants of “kitty cat!” every time she possibly could – in black pants and a black long sleeve turtleneck and Florence bought her a little black hairband with pretend kitten ears and a felt tail and drew whiskers on her little cheeks with eyeliner. Penelope didn’t have a costume, mostly because Daniel said he had an idea and, like the year before with Clementine, Florence decided to put her trust in him and let him do what he wanted.
Taking the subway with one baby was a hassle but now with two under two, Florence was nearly falling apart when she made it to the old Victorian house on the tree lined street. Penelope was strapped into the stroller and Clementine was holding her mother’s hand and trying to jump in all the leaf piles that lined the sidewalk, her little tail that was clipped onto the back of her jeans waving around as she walked. Florence held her hand tighter as they reached the house, reminding the excited nearly-two-year-old to take the stairs slowly. Clementine stomped up the stone steps one at a time, her little hand wrapped around the spokes of the metal banister, as Florence carefully lifted the stroller up to the porch as well.
“Okay, Clemmy, in-spin.” Florence said, opening the front door to usher the toddler through the threshold.
“Dayul!” Clementine shrieked as soon as she spotted him in the kitchen, pattering her way across the wood floors.
“Oh, hi! Hi, baby!” Daniel cooed down at her, grinning ear to ear as he met her halfway and crouched down to scoop her up. “Oh my goodness, you are the cutest kitty cat.”
Clementine threw her arms around his neck and just smiled proudly over at her mother.
“The subway sucks.” Florence sighed, closing the door behind her.
“If I knew you were coming already I could have picked you up instead.” Daniel tisked, going over to take the diaper bag from her shoulder.
“I didn’t want to bother you.” Florence mumbled.
“Never a bother.” Daniel rolled his eyes playfully. “Come on in though, the guys are still getting ready upstairs.”
“Do you have the things for Penelope?” Florence asked as she bent down to pick up the quiet baby from the stroller and followed Daniel to the living room.
“Of course, I do! It’s all upstairs.” Daniel grinned, setting Clementine on the couch before turning to Florence. He clapped his hands to the baby in her arms, “Your turn to get all dressed up, little one!”
Penelope reached out a hand to him and he took her from Florence, cuddling her right up close to his chest.
“Me too!” Clementine slid off the couch and ran over to him, grabbing two little fistfuls of his jeans.
“You wanna help me get baby sister ready for Halloween?” Daniel asked, twirling his finger around one of her pigtails. Clementine nodded excitedly. “Okay, let’s go upstairs then.”
Daniel sent Florence a smile before leading the girls to the stairs and held Clementine’s hand as they took the stairs one at a time. Florence watched them leave before she sat herself down on the couch with a heavy sigh and leaned back. Any moment to herself was relief and she basked in the momentary silence where her hands weren’t full with two toddlers.
Upstairs, Daniel had Penelope laid out on his bed and Clementine sat beside her sister and a shopping bag on the other side of the three-month-old.
“Okay, Miss Penelope, let’s get you changed.” Daniel said, leaning down to wiggle her out of her jacket and under clothes until she was left in her diaper. Clementine pet a gentle hand on her baby sister’s tummy, shooting a cheeky grin up to Daniel. “You’re so good with her.” Daniel complimented softly.
“Mama says gotta be gentle.”
“Yes, we do have to be gentle.” Daniel agreed, pulling the blue jeans from the bag and ripped off the tag with his teeth before putting them on the baby. Penelope whined softly at being moved around but Clementine kept her distracted with a plush rattle that honestly was more entertaining to her than to the baby. Daniel grabbed the two shirts from the bag and pulled them carefully over Penelope’s head and slipped her arms in.
She let out a small cry, trying to wiggle away from him.
“Hey, hey, bug, it’s okay.” Daniel cooed, smoothing down her shirt over her tummy before leaning down to press a kiss to her chubby cheek.
“Pelope.” Clementine called softly, shaking the rattle for the baby again.
There was a knock at the door and Clementine and Daniel both looked over to Jack standing there, “I thought I heard my little orange.”
“Jack!” Clementine squealed and slipped off the bed to run and hug him as Daniel finished up with the baby and a jar of hair gel.
“Hey.” Daniel greeted his friend casually as he finally picked up the baby and set her against his chest.
“How’s the littlest Beatle?” Jack chuckled.
“Never looked better.” Daniel smiled proudly, tugging down the black shirt that housed The Beatles logo. Penelope’s dark hair was gelled and combed over her forehead to mimic the 60s bowl-cut style and he pulled a toy guitar lastly from the bag and passed it to her. The baby stuck the end in her mouth right away as she looked up at him.
Jack led Clementine downstairs first and Daniel followed with the baby in his arms. Florence sat herself up on the couch as they came into the living room.
“Now presenting, for one night only,” Jack called in an announcer voice, “The Beatle!”
“Oh my gosh!” Florence laughed, holding her hands over her mouth as Daniel straightened out the baby’s outfit to show her. Penelope looked up at him as she slobbered all over the tiny toy guitar. “Dani, that’s…freaking amazing.” Florence grinned.
“Isn’t she all that?” Daniel chuckled, tickling the baby’s tummy to make her giggle. “I was listening to Penny Lane the other day and it made me think of my little Penny girl so I thought I should put them together. My favourite band and one of my favourite girls.”
Florence figured he meant Clementine and she pet a hand over her eldest’s hair but she didn’t catch Daniel’s lingering glance on the both of them, hidden behind his kiss to the baby’s head.
After a quick early dinner, the guys all gathered downstairs to leave for the frats; each of them kissing the little girls goodbye on their way out the door and then it was just the four of them. Florence buckled Penelope in the stroller and they headed the opposite way down the street to go trick-or-treating. Clementine held Daniel’s hand as they walked down the sidewalks and up to each house. After a while, Daniel insisted on bringing out the baby since he was so darn proud of his costume idea and he definitely earned plenty of compliments from house owners on his cute blonde kitty cat and the chubby cheeked band member he had in his arms. Clementine’s basket was getting full and they were going to hit a few more houses before calling it a night. Penelope was getting restless and Daniel’s arm was getting tired anyway so he set her back in the stroller with Florence before rushing after the two-year-old up the next lawn.
Florence could only smile at the sight of them together, her best friend and her daughter, a duo that was strong from the start. She didn’t mind letting Daniel take her from house to house – even when he asked her multiple times if she wanted to switch – because the calm stroll and watching her daughter have fun was just fine for Florence.
Daniel held Clementine’s hand as they headed back down the steps of their last house, the toddler babbling on about some incoherent story. They returned to Florence on the sidewalk to get ready to head back and Clementine ran up to her to show her how full her basket was.
“Wow, Clemmy, you got so much candy!” Florence smiled down at her daughter before picking her up, “Did you have fun?”
Clementine nodded, curling into her mother’s neck as her tiredness started to overtake her small body. Daniel pushed the stroller beside them all the way back to the house, both girls fast asleep by the time they got inside and Florence laid sleeping Clementine on the end of the sectional sofa and Daniel set Penelope next to her.
Florence kept a hand on both of them as Daniel brought over warm damp wash cloths for them and she thanked him softly. Neither of them spoke as they cleaned up the girls, Daniel washing the gel from the baby’s hair the best he could and Florence wiping the drawn on whiskers and nose from the toddler’s face. With the diaper bag set between them, they got the little ones changed and into pyjamas in perfect comfortable silence, only sharing small smiles as their hands brushed or when Penelope did a little stretch that was too cute not to smile at.
Daniel threw out the garbage as Florence tucked Penelope into the stroller again and set a pillow on Clementine’s other side so she could sleep soundly without rolling off the couch and by then, both Daniel and Florence were nearly exhausted themselves too. They both fell back onto the other end of the couch together, side by side, both sighing at the same time before looking at each other.
“Success.” Daniel held his fist up between them.
Florence smiled softly at him and knocked his lightly with her own, “Good teamwork.”
They fell into silence again, just staring into space through the nearly dark living room, a good few inches of space between them with their own hands folded on their own laps.
Daniel looked over at her again after a moment, “You wanna stay over?”
Florence looked back at him with a sleepy smile, and then rested her head against his shoulder, “Yes, please.”

""I'm being low balled by an insurance claims adjuster for damage to my car, now what?
I had a claim against a guys insurance company for damage he caused. They came out today and did an evaluation and now the insurance estimator is saying that the vehicle needs to be totaled and that I will be offered some low ball figure because my car has prior damage which was only cosmetic and minor nothing structural at all. I know that the vehicle will be worth more than they are going to offer. But I just want a fair price for the car. They suggested that it might take some back and forth negotiations and I need to know how to prepare for that and succeed at getting something fair? Are there any angles or cards that I can play that should give me some leverage against their claims adjuster? Your help is appreciated and thank you for your answer!

HELP! Insurance company trying to low ball estimate?
Back in April I was driving and a lady tried switching lanes and struck my vehicle. I immediately went to an auto body shop and got an estimate for the damage, they took photos and everything. I've been contacting her insurance and dealing with this for over two months... I had to send them the police report because the woman tried lying and said I hit her, so I had to prove she was at fault. They would never return my calls. Until I talked to the field adjuster. He then called me yesterday told me he got the estimate from the body shop which was one of their recommended shops, and was mailing me the check for the damage. However he failed to tell me the check he was sending was for $1000 less than the estimate. I don't agree with this, what do I do? I called and no one will call me back from the company Also, I own my car outright. It's a 2004 tiburon is excellent condition. The insurance company was giving me issues about me wanting the check sent to me. I plan on getting the damages repaired that are necessary but leaving what isn't and keeping the money that's left over. I'm not even making them get me a rental for the time I don't have the car! Please help The company is American family.""

Is there an afforadable health insurance you can find for self-employed people?
Are they able to charge me with car insurance fraud?
A little over a month ago I had a contractor and his workers in my home. They came unexpectedly and although I didn't know it at the time I believe that one of them stole the key to my car, a new CR-V. Anyway a week later we went on vacation and the day we came back it was late we didn't unpack and order a pizza went to bed. The baby woke up a 5:30 am and I had no diapers upstairs so I headed to the car. The car was gone, we called the police and when they got there and were writing the report a dispatcher came over the radio and stated my car was found, but it was on fire. At the time of the report I didn't know where the key was and I didn't suspect anyone. I really thought that maybe my 2 1/2 year old took it and misplaced it. It wasn't a big deal to me I knew it would turn up. We told the cops that we would look for it. When the insurance lady called she asked me a lot of questions like why were you down stairs so early and where is the key and have you ever had a car stolen before. I told her yes to the car being stolen before. Two years ago. After weeks of working with the police. I now find out that the insurance company has turned the case over to an independent agency. She said that there were discrepancies in my story. I talked to her once, In the meant time the Dectective on the case has found the guy we think stole the car and has reopened the old car case and has a suspect with that one too. The firemarshell and the detective both told me and my husband (a retired cop) that we are in no way suspect. They have both spoken to the insurance company. So anyone who is in the business. What is going on? Is this routine? I have been very forth coming with them. I had paid 10000 on the car and it is worth 22000, because I am now a stay at home mom I never have the credit to get a loan for a new car again, my son's favorite toys were in the car along with strollers 2 car seats and a picture of my son on his 1st roller coaster ride. My son sleeps under his bed because he is afraid of being Stoled What else do I need to do to prove to these poeple that I didn't steel my car.""
Why is Geico Home Owner's Insurance So Much More Expensive Than other Companies?
I have had my home owner's insurance through Liberty Mutual and I pay $865.00 per year for about 110,000 in dwelling coverage plus other coverages as well. However, I just decided as I wasn't doing anything today to check on the competition and I called up Geico. Get this.. Here it is... Geico, for the EXACT SAME COVERAGE I am paying Liberty Mutual $865.00 per year gave me a quote for $4,200.00 per year. WITH ALL COVERAGES BEING EQUAL. I was shocked... The lady told me because I had one claim for roof damage which cost $4,000.00 that justified the increase in coverage. Plus Geico had a higher deductible of $1,500.00. First I don't know anyone paying $4,000.00 for a one year home owner's policy for $110,000.00 in coverage. But does anyone know why Geico is so ridiculously expensive?""
""My car was stolen and now I'm being investigated for insurance fraud. I'm only 18, help!!?""
My car was stolen on Saturday. I was driving in the car with someone I thought I could trust and when I went inside a subway terminal to meet another friend I left the keys in the car and the person who was in the car with me took off with the car, my phone, my purse, and about $1500 worth of shopping bags and boxed furniture that I had just bought from Ikea. I called the police and they aren't doing much help. I've had to investigate a lot of this myself. The person who took my car doesn't have permanent housing so its been hard to track him down. I found out from the cops he has 4 other warrants out for his arrest for crimes relating to cars. Obviously, I didn't know that when I left him alone with mine. After my dad filed a claim to our insurance company, they said they were going to begin an investigation and sent us a letter saying it was within their rights not to give us any money for the car. They think me and the person who stole the car are working together to get money off of them. Their going to interview me and I'm really scared. The last time I broke the law was when I was five and tried to steal a barbie from Walgreens. I'm only 18 now and I don't even know how insurance or fraud work, never mind insurance fraud. They're going to accuse me. They only thing I'm really guilty of is being stupid/ naive/ gullible. I trusted a person who I should not have trusted. My questions are: 1) How can I track down this person? I sent a messege on Facebook to all of our mutual friends telling them to keep an eye out. 2) How can I move the investigation from the police (who are on my side) along, when they aren't really doing anything? 3) What am I supposed to tell the insurance guy? What should I say? I just want my car back. I feel so helpless, please help.""

My insurance company will not change car details?
I have been thinking of purchasing a brand new car this year and today went ahead with the purchase, well at least put a deposit down with a 12 week wait. I have been driving now for a year and a half. and at aged 28 thought I would be out of the range of a silly driver by now. However, after phoning my insurance company to ask for a new/updated quote for the insurance they are telling me that they will not insure me on a new car due to my lack of experience. I am of course going to still have the new car as most other insurance companies will insure me on the new car at a fairly reasonable rate. infact only 100 pounds a year more than my current car. They are still howver going to charge me a 30 cancellation fee and will obviously lose my no-claims for the six months. ""Car inspected, tags, insurance, and title questions?""
Hi everyone. I have a 1996 saturn that has just been sitting for about two years now. I have a few questions. The car's tags expired about a year and a half ago, so in order to get new ones, i have to get it inspected and fixed and whatnot. I dont want to drive a car with expired tags, but is this what ill have to do in order to get them? And before I can get it inspected, i have to have the title for the car, right? My dads name is on the title, but he lost it when we moved. Can I get a new copy of the title, or does he have to do it? One more question, my dad stopped paying for insurance on it a long time ago. Like, a long time ago. Should I get it insured before i try anything else? In my mind, I plan on getting the title first, then getting it insured, getting it inspected, and then getting tags to make my car legal. Is this the right approach? My dads doesn't think he should help me with any of this, so I'm kinda on my own here. Thank you!""

How long with a car accident affect your insurance rates in California?
I was found at fault for two accidents (damage >$750) a couple years ago and also got ticketed for turning right on a red at a no right on red light. I just spoke with my car insurance company and was told that the accidents will remain on my record for 5 years. Is that true? Is it legal to be declined health insurance for this reason?
I applied with a major insurance company in California, am a single vegetarian in my mid/late 30s no children, extremely healthy never been diagnosed with anything, exercise regularly. I guess they dug up that I had taken a fertility drug in the past - I was never even diagnosed as infertile - it's a really cheap common drug that stimulates your ovaries to produce more eggs but I had no partner to get pregnant with so to was just something I got from a fertility doctor if I wanted to get pregnant with donor sperm. That's not even covered by insurance if I ever want to do that again and the drug's like $20 you can practically get it over the counter it's so common I know tons of women who use it. I didn't even apply for maternity care to be included in my insurance, just a basic policy. Is it legal for them to decline me because of this? How can forcing people to have car insurance compare to forcing health insurance?
Actually this equates to Slavery by the government??? You do not have to buy car insurance if you do not own a car. Secondly, if your car is paid for then you only have to have liability insurance to protect others not for the repairs of your own car. Yet, forcing everyone to have health insurance would fall on every individual regardless of age, sex, race, income, ect. If you do not have enough after paying your monthly bills you will be fined and even serve prison time with a $25,000 fee. This essentially goes against Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness isn't it? Liberals want to say everyone should have, and the government should provide? Yet, this is not government providing it is government enslaving you to have?? Slippery slope they are weaving and the benefits will be far less than we have today with the government oppression on each individual.""

Inside: Ch.1
There’s a place in the neighborhood where I drive by every day. It’s nothing special, but I always thought it was interesting that no one could ever set up shop there. It’s a prime spot, right on the corner in front of the subway. It’s on a busy corner between two main streets; I always thought it was the perfect place to start a business, maybe have some offices because of the coffee shop across the way. But no one ever seems to be able to stay there. One day there’s a sign on the entrance, a couple of weeks later it’s gone; replaced by realtor sign. No one ever stays. I know better now.
Sometimes we live our lives in such a monotonous and superficial way, routine takes over and we slowly but surely let go of what we once dreamed of becoming. That’s growing up. But every once in a while, we catch a break. Something breaks us out of that routine and we get thrown into a world that we never imagined possible- a world we very literally never thought existed. Interestingly enough, it turns out to be exactly what we need when we need it. That’s what happened to me today.
I was was on that corner between those two main streets, having just bought a cup of coffee. It was a chilly but sunny day; one of those where if you stand in the sun you wanna take off your jacket because of the heat, but if you go in the shade you freeze to death. The coffee helped, I’m a big coffee person. Love the stuff. Anyway, I cross the street and I end up standing right in front of the empty place- the one I was talking about earlier. Big glass windows facing the street reveal a large, empty room. White walls that are beginning to turn gray  make up the three walls, and some sheets covered the floor. Abandoned.
The whooshing of the cars passing by broke my train of thought as I turned my attention back to the street. The light was going to change at any moment now. I tugged at my jean jacket and adjusted the strings on the hoodie underneath. The subway was going to be cold with the air conditioner. Taking a sip of my coffee, I look across the street and notice the small crowd getting ready to cross. Mostly mothers with their strollers, keeping an eye on the children they just picked up from school. Typical afternoon crowd. A bright red ball caught my eye. Up and down it went in the hands of a young girl, she couldn’t have been any older than seven or eight. She was wearing a school uniform, the navy blue skirt and light blue collared shirt.
I watched with some concern as she seems more distracted about catching the ball than being attentive to the sidewalk, but my concern eased as I noticed the traffic light turned from red to yellow, slowing traffic. But something made me linger on the traffic; a roar of an engine that’s speeding up to catch the light. A big food truck that has gathered too much speed to slow down. The girl missed the catch and ball bounced into the street.
I remember thinking that time had stopped; my thought process speeding up. Shout? Too slow. Run? Maybe. Then I’m seeing myself in third person; me running into the street faster than I thought possible, my coffee forgotten, half picking up half tackling the little girl and her ball. The food truck rushing past, the force of wind knocking me forward. I remember I twisted, trying to make sure that I landed on the ground instead of landing on top of her. The problem was that I hit the ground hard, and with the momentum I had gained I landed on the sidewalk, hard.
Muffled voices surrounded me, people asking if I was alright, voices filled with shock, gratitude, someone crying. My eyes were closed, and I couldn’t seem to open them. I tried to talk to them, to tell them I was ok, to ask about the little girl, but I couldn’t form the words. My eyes finally fluttered open and I saw a group of people crowded around me, the little girl crying in her mother’s arms. She was alright.
Arms reached out to help me stand and someone offers to call an ambulance. I shake my head and hear my voice say “no thanks”. There’s my voice. My mind went to the ball, where’d it go? Never did find it. I adjusted my jacket again, dusting it off. My head was still spinning a bit but I felt a little better. I missed my coffee, but if I go back and buy another one I won’t make it to work. I took one last look at the little girl, who tearfully stared at me with wide eyes. I gave her a small smile. She smiled back.
People were starting to crowd some more, but I’m not one to stand for attention. I went down the stairs to the subway, sliding my card in the meter before walking to the station. My head still hurt and I was still a bit dizzy from the fall, but I was mobile so somehow that translated into me being alright. The muffled voice of the speaker rumbled on and a train came to a stop in front of me. I walked in with a small group of people and took a seat. Normally I’d have my music or a book to read while I head to work, but I’d left my backpack there yesterday so I was going to have to sit and twiddle my thumbs.
I work at a school, a small one, taking care of the kids while their parents come and get them. I like my job; it’s simple, not retail, and pays my bills. It’s only a couple of hours a week, but overall it does the trick. Gets me to where I need to go and sometimes a bit extra.
I leaned back in my seat and closed my eyes. The ride was short and I knew I wouldn’t have enough time for a nap, but maybe I could rest for a little. The train was kinda empty, so I didn’t have to worry about someone sitting next to me or anything. Except someone did. I half opened my eyes and noticed a man; clean shaven, professional looking, I mean he was wearing a vest and everything. But no tie. Probably just got off work. Normally I would be wary of anyone sitting next to me, but he just looked straight ahead and seemed to mind his own business. And I won’t lie, he was pretty good looking. Dark hair, slightly curly, cut neat and tidy. But I didn’t pay any mind. Whatever.
“How’s your head?”
My eyes shot open and I looked at him. “Excuse me?”
“Your head,” the deep voice answered, “it seems like you took quite a hit. I’m sorry, this must seem rather forward. I was on the street when you saved that little girl, that was a very brave act.”
“Oh,” I said. “Um, I guess. My head’s fine. Just hurts a bit, but overall ok.”
“The mother was looking for you to thank you,” he mentioned. “She was very grateful to you.”
“I’m not much for attention,” I told him.
He nodded, almost knowingly. “I understand, you seem to be more on the shy side.”
I don’t mind strangers making small talk, but it freaks me out sometimes. This was one of those times. I didn’t answer the guy. He made me feel uncomfortable.
“Why did you do it?”
I turned to look at him, confused. “What?”
“The little girl. Why did you save her?”
Why had I saved her? I didn’t think about it, I just acted. I shrugged.
“You don’t know?”
“I guess.”
“I think you do.”
I was beginning to feel annoyed at this guy. Maybe he was drunk. For some reason drunk people liked talking to me. Hazard of being me.
“What’s the big deal anyway? Does it really matter why I saved her?”
He laughed a little. “Of course it does. It means quite a bit.”
“Why is it important to you though?”
He shrugged. “I think the real question is why isn’t it important to you?”

Anything But Mine (d.s.) - Chapter One
A/N thank you for the few lovely notes so far :) here’s chapter one for your reading enjoyment!
Tumblr media

"So, you're here by yourself again?"
The colourful carpet was soft under Florence's hands as she picked absentmindedly at the pattern. She looked up to concerned glances from the lady in front of her. The leader of the group stared expectantly.
"Yeah. Matt’s busy." Florence cleared her throat awkwardly, looking back down at the eight-month-old baby in front of her. Clementine looked back up at her, a plastic toy held in her mouth by her two tiny fists. The rest of the group was across the room with their significant others, preparing to leave from the day's meeting, talking happily together.
"Does he know we have Mommy and Daddy group once a month?" the lady's voice was nothing but pity and concern and it made Florence hold back tears. The leader of their little group was a recent graduate of university with a degree Child and Youth Care at the mere age of twenty-five. Cameron was patient and gentle and Florence found comfort in her presence and within her educated advice.
Florence pulled Clementine onto her lap, wrapping her arms around the baby as a way to comfort herself. "Yes. He knows." Florence said, an edge to her voice.
"He’s busy a lot, huh?"
"It’s fine. Honestly." Florence forced a small chuckle. "He’s the one who brings in the money, so I can’t really complain when he’s busy."
"But this is something that's important to you, so shouldn't he make an effort?" Cameron frowned lightly, watching as Florence focused on the carpet. The young mother sniffled, her tired mind reeling. Cameron continued, "I don't want you to think I'm prying; I just hear the stories and see how it effects you and I want to make sure you're happy."
"I'm happy." Florence said stiffly, finally looking up at her.
"Yeah?" Cameron asked, worry set in her features.
"Yeah." Florence nodded once. "I love him more than anything."
"Well let me know if you need anything. Even if you need a babysitter for a night off or something." Cameron said, touching her arm comfortingly.
"Thanks." Florence smiled softly.
"I have little brothers I don't mind shipping off for hire for a night." Cameron winked. "They need to be kept busy."
"Alright." Florence chuckled, "I might take you up on that offer."
"You have my number."
"Sure do."
The girls stood up from the carpet, the room now empty except for the two of them. Cameron held the baby as Florence got her shoes on and gathered her things. Clementine was strapped into her seat as Florence pulled on her jacket. With a quick hug goodbye, Florence left the small daycare and headed for the subway.
Halfway across the city stood an old Victorian in the heart of downtown. Florence was heading there to meet up her friends at their new house before the school year started. It was arguably a fraternity, in all sense of the word, except they didn’t have a name and the house wasn't registered with the university. What would have been Florence's second year of university was about to start the following week, meaning all of her friends, except her, were preparing their back to school things.
Florence knocked on the front door of the three-story house.
Aidan answered it with a soft smile, "Hey. Come on in."
Florence made her way into the house with the small stroller, awkwardly navigating her way past the boxes that lined the hallway. Loud music was playing throughout the house and the place was filled with chatter. Michael and Luke, Aidan's fathers, were busy putting things away in the kitchen cupboards.
Michael and Luke were like a second family to Florence; the closest to a family that showed her that they loved her at least. Once her family moved back to LA and she flew back to Canada alone in order to hide her pregnancy from her borderline abusive parents, Michael and Luke took her in and helped her get on her feet while she was pregnant. They were there for her through everything and she really owed them so much.
"There's our girl!" Michael beamed when he saw Florence approach. He walked around the island and hugged her tightly.
"How are you feeling today?" Luke asked as he folded up an empty box and set it to the side.
"We're fine.” Florence sighed. She looked around the main floor of the house, taking in the grey walls and neutral modern tones. "Nice place you got here, Ai."
A small shriek from the direction of the stairs made Florence turn. A line of boys who were all around Aidan's age were peering over the railing at them. The one who screamed was the one who ran ahead, stopping in front of the stroller that was placed next to Florence.
"Can I hold her?" he asked, his soft voice quiet compared to the loud music that was playing the floor above.
"You know you don't have to ask, Dani." Florence chuckled. He bent down and unbuckled the baby, lifting her to his hip.
"Good afternoon, little one." The boy pressed a gentle kiss to the baby's cheek, holding her securely in his arms.
Daniel was Florence's closest friend in the city. They met not long after she started living with the Clifford's; as Florence insisted on leaving the house to accompany Aidan to a party – even if she was seven months pregnant – and there she was introduced to Daniel. Daniel was the best musician Florence had ever met; being able to play almost any instrument he picked up. Along with his raw talent, he was a soft-spoken boy – an absolute sweetheart in Florence's books – and the single most gentle person she had ever met.
Between his friendship with Aidan and flourishing best friendship with Florence, Daniel was around Clementine a lot. Not that he complained; he absolutely adored children, and he offered to babysit as much as he could. It was difficult, however, as bringing a baby into the dormitories of the university was not easily done.
Now living out on their own for their second year, Aidan, Daniel, and their other four friends were free to do as they pleased. It was an important step and Florence was just as excited as the boys were.
The other guys gathered around Daniel, swooning over the eight-month-old that was in his arms. Clementine held on to the collar of his light blue button up, shrieking with giggles as Jack's tight curls tickled her nose.
"What went down at mom group this morning?" Michael asked the young mother who had a second to herself now that her baby was distracted. She sat down at the island.
"It was fine. It was couples’ group today. Everyone else had their boyfriends and husbands there and I was by myself, so Cameron talked to me about it, yet again."
"Why didn't Matt go?" Michael asked.
"He's working until 5 and then we're going out with Daniel." Florence shrugged.
"My treat." Daniel nodded excitedly.
"Have fun third-wheeling." Zach laughed at his friend.
"I got my date right here." Daniel pressed a kiss to the baby's cheek.
"That sounds nice and all, but I could have sworn I saw him at one of the frats down the street." Corbyn spoke up, looking over at them as Clementine clung onto his index finger.
"What?" Aidan frowned, looking between them.
"Yeah. He said he was pre-drinking before the move-in parties tonight." Corbyn said slowly.
"Wanna bet he forgot about dinner?" Florence scoffed under her breath.
"Did he tell you he was going to work?" Jonah asked her, his eyebrows furrowed in concern. He was always the most mature one.
"Yeah." Florence shrugged. "But whatever. This isn't the FBI. We don't have to read into everything."
The boys exchanged glances but dropped the conversation anyway.
"Anyway, I should text him. We should be leaving soon. It's almost 5."
"I’ll grab my keys.” Daniel said, passing the baby back to her mother before heading for the stairs.
“I need a turn before you go!” Jack gently took the baby back from Florence, cuddling her to his chest. Clementine easily curled into him. The rest of the boys said their goodbyes and headed back upstairs to continue unpacking, leaving Florence, Jack, and Michael and Luke alone.
"You’ll call if you need anything?” Luke said to Florence as she slung her purse back over her shoulder.
"As usual." Florence smiled at him. She then turned to Jack, “I need her back now.”
Jack frowned but gently placed Clementine back in her stroller, stopping to leave kisses all over her face which made her giggle, tiny fingers latching onto his curls.
"Let's get a move on!" Daniel called, skipping down the stairs and opening the front door. Florence said her last goodbye and followed him outside.
The late summer air was sticky and she was thankful for the sudden blast air conditioning in Daniel's silver Acura. The baby was strapped into the backseat; the stroller being able to detach into a car seat. The drive was filled with gentle conversation and quiet music, the eight-month old in the backseat falling asleep quickly. Matt had texted Florence to say he would meet them at home so Daniel headed towards the condo. Once they arrived at Florence's condo, they parked in one of her two underground parking spots. The place came with two spaces but Matt had the only car between them. This made it perfect for when guests came over. Regardless, it was unofficially claimed as Daniel's spot as he was so often over at their place.
The entire 25th floor apartment was very modern and framed in ceiling height windows that overlooked the city, a luxury the young couple was lucky to afford. With funds being sent in from Florence's twin brother in LA – without their parents’ knowledge of course – she was able to keep the condo as their own. Their dynamic worked well as Florence stayed home with the baby and Matt worked to keep his car and the food on the table while still attending university. Florence was anxious to have a job of her own but she knew when the time was right that it would happen.
Time ticked by slowly as Daniel and Florence waited for Matt to arrive home so they could leave. They waited on the couch, watching early evening TV, with Clementine sat between them. Florence’s eyes kept drifting to the clock as 5:00 passed quickly. Daniel could sense her uneasiness but he didn’t speak about it, not wanting her to make a bigger deal of Matt’s tardiness than it should have been. It wasn’t until quarter to six that Matt finally walked through the door. He exhaled deeply as the door closed, dropping his backpack on the floor.
“Hey.” he said, his classic crooked smile playing at his lips. His light brown hair was messily pushed back from his face and yet he still ran a hand through it, making his way over to the couch to press a kiss to Florence’s cheek.
“Hi.” she spoke quietly.
“Hey, Matt.” Daniel spoke finally.
“Hey, man.” Matt smiled, his gum smacking between his teeth. “We ready to go?”
“We have been for 45 minutes.” Florence narrowed her eyes up at him.
“You’re so tense, babe.” Matt laughed, walking into the bedroom to grab a sweater.
“I’m not tense. I’m kinda pissed that you told me you were working but when out and got buzzed instead.” Florence said plainly, arms crossed over her chest. Daniel shifted awkwardly beside her, scooping Clementine into his arms. It wasn’t the first time he had seen them do that.
“I finished early.” Matt shrugged, pulling his grey hoodie over his head as he came back into the living room. He turned to Daniel, a goofy smile back on his face, “Can you drive, bud? Getting here was a challenge enough.”
Florence shook her head in disbelief and got up to put her shoes on.
“Yeah, I guess I can drive.” Daniel agreed and got up from the couch as well. The drive to the restaurant was awkward; silence filling the car except for Clementine’s babbles and Matt’s phone buzzing in his hand as he typed away in the backseat.
Since they missed their reservation time, they had to wait in the lobby for a few minutes while the hostess found them a new table. Matt let himself drape his arm around Florence’s shoulders, whispering a small apology about being late, the light coat of alcohol fresh on his breath, and she forgave him with a quick kiss.
The hostess finally sat them at a table for four near the middle of the restaurant. Daniel and Florence sat across from each other with Matt between them and Clementine in the highchair on the other side. Matt drummed his fingers on the table as they looked over their menus, humming lightly to himself. Florence set her hand over his, stopping the noise.
The waitress came over to take their orders, beginning with Florence. Before she could even open her mouth, Matt butted in with, “I would love a Corona.”
“Are you sure?” Florence asked him under her breath.
“Very sure.” Matt narrowed his eyes momentarily at her before looking back to the waitress and smiling.
“I’ll have a water please.” Daniel spoke quietly to the waitress, breaking the slight tension. Florence smiled softly at him, shaking her head.
The group fell into silence for a few minutes. Florence took that time to bend down next to her chair and unzip the diaper bag, pulling out a jar for Clementine and an orange plastic spoon.
“I can do that if you want.” Daniel offered.
“You sure?” Florence held the baby food out to him.
“I’m sure she can do it herself.” Matt spoke without looking up from his phone, reaching with his other hand to sip his drink. Florence pulled her hands back and unscrewed the jar herself.
“Really, Flora, I can do it.” Daniel whispered.
“It’s fine.” Florence smiled gently, offering a spoonful to the baby who gladly opened her mouth. Daniel frowned, looking between the two young parents. Matt smiled at something on his phone, the glass bottle resting against his lips. Florence gently wiped the corner of the baby’s mouth with a napkin. How different they appeared.
Clementine smacked her tiny hands on the table, babbling happily through a mouthful of pureed peaches. When she reached for Daniel, he offered his hand to her, the light glinting off his rings and being an instant attraction to the eight month old. Florence held out another spoon but Clementine was uninterested, staring with an open mouth at Daniel. He leaned down to be eye level with the baby and stuck his tongue out. Clementine giggled, reaching for his face.
“You’re such a distraction.” Florence laughed to her friend.
“Sorry.” Daniel bit back a smile as Clementine held her tiny hand to his cheek.
The waitress came back and set their plates down. Matt looked up from his phone to eye the waitress as she walked away.
“I get it, the waitress is pretty, but at least make your gawking less obvious.” Florence grumbled into the air. Daniel picked up his glass with the hand that wasn’t claimed by the baby.
“I will when you two over there stop eye fucking each other all the damn time.” Matt waved his fork between the two friends.
Daniel choked on his water at that statement.
“Matthew.” Florence glared towards him.
Matt only shrugged, focussing at his plate, “Just saying. You two spend a lot of time together.”
“Just saying, you’re never home.” Florence retaliated. “I’m allowed to have friends.”
“Yeah. Try finding some girls to be friends with instead of clinging onto any attractive male you find.”
“Can you not be a jerk for once in your life?” Florence spat.
“I’m only saying what I feel. Isn’t that what you want? Open communication?”
Florence fell into silence, defeated by that statement, and focussed on her dinner.
“That’s what I thought.” Matt scoffed. Florence aggressively speared a piece of broccoli with her fork and popped it in her mouth.
“Oh, don’t be like that.” Matt grumbled.
“Like what?!” Florence glared at him.
“Acting like a brat now.”
Florence took a breath to keep herself calm, “Well I’m obviously upset because you insulted my literal only friend and when he’s sitting right there of all things.”
“I didn’t insult him.”
“Might as well have.”
“God, why are you always like this? No wonder your family left you here.”
A small gasp left Florence’s lips and she directed her stare to her plate. Daniel was taken back by that statement too, glancing between them with wide eyes. Florence felt tears forming but swallowed them back, not wanting to give Matt the satisfaction of getting to her. Hardly anyone spoke for the remainder of the meal.
“You can drop me off at the frat houses on your way back.” Matt told Daniel as he climbed in the backseat of his car once dinner ended.
“As you wish.” Daniel said under his breath, slowly pulling out of the parking lot. Once Matt was dropped off - leaving with barely a goodbye - Daniel headed for the condo.
“Well tonight was...interesting.” he spoke softly through the quiet car, Clementine fast asleep in the back.
“Yeah. Sorry about all that.” Florence said.
“Don’t apologize. He’s the one who was out of line.”
“I mean not really.”
“What do you mean? He was snapping at you and walking all over you all night.”
“He was not. I was being testy. I deserved whatever came back at me.”
“Flora, you can’t be serious.” Daniel let out a light, humourless laugh. “He treated you like crap tonight. Enough said.”
“He’s just stressed.”
“That’s not an excuse.”
“Daniel, it’s fine. I’m fine.”
Florence rarely called him by his full first name so he knew to back off then. But he really didn’t want to, he was worried about her.
Florence stared out the window at the passing buildings and cars. She just wanted to go home and sleep it off.
“Every time I’m with you guys there’s always an argument going on.” Daniel whispered.
“No, there’s not.”
“I know you love him, and Clementine loves him, but you need to think about if this - all his parties and his constant bad attitude and his drinking - is what you want to deal with for the rest of your life.”
“How can you say that to me?” Florence turned to look at him.
Daniel’s eyebrows furrowed and he snuck a glance over to her before looking back to the road.
“You don’t understand how hard it is to do what Matt and I do. Being teenage parents. He has to work all the time and still go to school and still be a teenager and a father. I have to raise a child and...and...and do everything around the house. You can’t say that I should give up on this because Matt’s stressed. No. I’ve wanted this for too long. I’ve worked too hard to get here.”
Daniel sighed, leaning his arm on the door and rubbing his temple.
“Where do you think this conversation is going to get you?”
“Me? This isn’t for me.” Daniel retorted, pulling into the underground parking of the condominium. “I’ve known you during the time he was gone and then now that he’s suddenly back. After all the crap he put you through I’m just surprised that you still can’t see it. You two are so incredibly different and it’s bordering on toxic. You don’t want to feel alone so you let him back in your life no matter what he could or does do to you. Even ask your brother and he’ll tell you the same thing. You deserve someone who treats you so much better than Matt does.”
“You can think that all you want,” Florence scoffed, “But he’s my boyfriend. The father of my child. And if you can’t accept that then maybe you should leave.”
Florence climbed out of the car and slammed the door behind her. She took Clementine from the backseat, mumbling a thank you to Daniel for dinner, and stalked off towards the elevator.
