A Hero's Death Characters
In celebration of having finished my first draft, have a list of characters!
(Without spoilers of course, this is essentially what Michael knows about these people at the start of the story)
Civilians
Michael Hunter
Our narrator and (amateur) detective. He is a huge fan of the (late) Galactic and intends to find his murderer.
Larissa Novak
A well known investigative journalist. Her primary focus are heroes and politics. She is known for several exposés both of corrupt politicians and of corruption within the Association.
Luke
Frequents a bar with primarily villanous clientel and seems to be friendly with the regulars. Has an unhealthy relationship with alcohol.
Heroes
Galactic
The city's former hero. He was murdered 10 years ago under mysterious circumstances. He was known for his tough stance on crime and villains.
Peacemaker
The city's current hero. She used to be Galactic's sidekick under the name Starchild and took over as hero after his death. She is known for preferring non-violent solutions whenever possible.
Violet and Emerald
Peacemaker's twin sidekicks. The public pretty much views them as one item, since they almost always appear together. They mostly stay out of the publics eye. (Violet uses she/her pronouns and Emerald he/him)
Villains
The Shadow Duet
The former supervillains of the city, Alto (she/her) and Tenor (he/him) were considered the only true threat to Galactic, until he killed them a week prior to his death.
Chorus
The Shadow Duet's former right hand. They disappeared after their bosses' deaths.
Fantasia
The current supervillain of the city. She used to be the Shadow Duet's protegé and her ability to create mass illusions is considered to make her very dangerous, despite her distaste for physical violence.
Voltage
One of the few villains who was active during Galactic's tenure and is still active today. Is considered a fairly minor villain, but dangerous due to her short temper and propensity for violence.
Nightshade
The only known villain to have been active before Galactic's debut and be active during his entire tenure. She retired shortly after his death.

i think all quiet on the western front and the lord of the rings are in direct conversation with each other, as in theyre the retelling of the same war with one saying here's what happened, we all died, and it did not matter at all and another going hush little boy, of course we won, of course your friends came back

Percy, who had finally accepted to bear the burden of the great prophecy after agonizing over it for years only for everyone to repeatedly tell him in the final book that he's not the hero and its not about him:

on tumblr you can say words such as ‘doctor who is like mythology to me. it’s like an ongoing cosmogonic folktale’ and you will recieve 5 notes from people that are willing to indulge your insanity. in real life you say things like how are the kids and was your holiday fun and the weather’s lovely this morning. and i think that’s beautiful. autism.com/careers

Dick puts everything on the line. He's the last one standing. The rest of the Titans are down. He dies making sure that they, and the world, can live.
Then he wakes up, staring at a ceiling dotted with glow in the dark stars, very confused.
There's a redheaded teenager who calls herself Jazz, who seems suspicious of him. He had parents, ghost hunters who are definitely breaking many, many laws, who love him dearly.
He has a pair of very close friends, Tucker and Sam, who also do not trust him.
There was a funeral for Dick Grayson, he looked it up. There was a corpse and everything, cremated exactly as he had demanded after learning what had happened to Jason.
Just in case it's a fluke, and he's about to be thrown out of a body that isn't his, he doesn't reach out to anyone in the hero community just yet. Instead, he decides to look into who, exactly, is Daniel Fenton, and why do his friends and sister keep looking at him like he's a spy?
Or; Danny, growing more and more powerful as a halfa, was starting to have his ghostlyness leak through to his human form. He asked Clockwork if there was a future where Jack and Maddie would ever accept him being half ghost, and Clockwork informed him that no, there was not. So Danny worked with the Yetis in the Far Frozen to make a lifeless clone of himself, with the intent to fake his death and live on in the Realms. So when Jazz came into his room, fully expecting a lifeless clone, only to find the clone not only alive but fully functional, she's suspicious.

Leo: what do you guys think the best way to die is?
Nico: firing squad
Leo: honestly I think it'd be best to just get really old then walk into the woods until you keel over
Will: yeah but do it in the late stages of dimentia
Nico, cackling: bro would be like "where am I?" then keep walking deeper into the woods
Nico, Leo, and Will, dying laughing:
Percy, terrified: what the fuck

One of the more entertaining consequences of broadcast standards for children's media during the 1980s is that villains weren't allowed to express or directly imply the desire or intent to kill the protagonist, but they were allowed to openly state their intention to eat the protagonist – provided that at least one of the hero or the villain were non-human.
(i.e., human villain expressing the desire to eat a non-human protagonist: okay; unambiguously monstrous villain expressing the desire to eat a human protagonist: okay; human villain expressing the desire to eat a human protagonist: not okay.)
This often led to interesting characterisation choices, like Shredder's strange preoccupation with making the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into soup in the 1987 series – he's not allowed to threaten to kill them, but he can freely threaten to eat them!

Danny was...unnerved, which is unusual considering his upbringing as the child of mad scientists obsessed with the undead.
It had been a few weeks since he had moved into Wayne manor after a conflict between batman and his parents, which led to his home and his friends and family being blown up in a lab malfunction. Most of Amity Park was destroyed in the blasts, including Vlad and his mansion.
Usually Danny would be more suspicious of super rich dudes, but the sorrow in Bruce Wayne's eyes as he pleaded to let Danny take him in was genuine and well, Danny didn't exactly have anywhere else to go. Plus, Bruce looked weirdly guilty when danny told him none of this was his fault, which was weird. Jazz was in college and always looked exhausted on video calls, so he didn't want to bother her there.
The part that bothered him most wasn't that there was anything dangerous or bad happening, but rather the opposite.
Danny was used to dodging his home security system when it randomly targeted him. He was used to ghosts popping up out of nowhere to suckerpunch him. He was used to danger.
And now that there was none, he was jumping at shadows.
Things got better when he met Psaro. He was in the process of being either mugged or kidnapped, he wasn't sure, when this angry goth teen with silver hair and ruby eyes literally came in swinging a steel chair. After the beat down and subsequent rescue, Danny offered to buy them some food. Psaro tried to reject the offer until his stomach suddenly growled, making him blush, and Danny dragged the older goth teen to a restaurant.
They've been best friends since. Psaro later introduced him to his friends Rose and Toilen, explaining that they weren't from this world and that Rose was an elf and Toilen was a Teran from a planet called Terrestria. Danny assumed that Psaro was an elf like Rose due to them both having long pointed ears and mostly focused on Toilen thanks to the "other planet" bit.
Meanwhile, the bats have been keeping an eye out on Danny (aka stalking him) and his new, obviously magical friends.
