If Ashfur had lived, and wasn't evil incel, would you have given him kits in this rewrite? I noticed in the petty!Ashfur has kits ask you mentioned something about it.

If I happened to go with a rewrite version that fully leaned into Villain Thornclaw taking over the Fire Scene as well as being the Imposter of TBC (which would go more into a Wish Fulfillment Rewrite than a Redux like what I'm doing), then Ashfur probably wouldn't get kits.

Ashfur would probably be a sort of 'red herring' type, set up to be a villain... but he's still the same sad guy who lost his mom in TPB. He would never kill a clanmate, let alone his apprentice.

The Fire Scene would go like it LOOKS like he's going to do something awful, but then reaches into the flames to try and pull the Three out with Squilf. He HATES her for dumping him but, not murderously. Then, when they look safe, that's when Thornclaw leaps out of the embers and reveals himself as the real villain.

And Thornclaw WOULD kill someone. He's too competent, too serious, not to.

So, anyway, Ashfur wouldn't get kits. He never really moves on from Squilf. He'd just be a sad, jealous, petty guy who likes to gossip and says mean shit. A misanthrope.

It’s the standard separated au but my version B) - Donnie grew up with Splinter, Leo stayed with Draxum, Raph ended up at the battle nexus and Mikey was left to roam the streets of the Hidden City.

Donnie: The most mentally stable of the brothers somehow. He was raised in the sewers with splinter, and even though he did receive care, splinter still couldn’t really provide much in terms of affection. Despite that they still love each other, even if distantly. He’s chronically online. He knows every vine ever and plays fps games a lot yes I made him a gamer. He and April are extremely close in this au, having met at a young age and April being the closest thing Donnie has to a sibling until finding his brothers. Splinter also refuses to tell Donnie anything to do with mutants/yokai, or even where they came from, much to Donnie’s dismay. Without his brothers and their antics, he doesn’t get out much, and hasn’t made a battle/protective shell for himself yet.

April: She and Donnie met in early childhood and were practically inseparable, them both being only children, and they basically became each other’s annoying sibling. She’s the only reason Donnie came out of his shell (heh) and she likes to take him onto the surface streets for shenanigans.

Leo: Huguinn pulled Leo from the wreckage of Draxum’s lab and was raised in the rebuilt lab. Draxum genuinely didn’t expect the turtles to come out as literal infants after mutation so it’s a miracle Leo even survived this long lol. (Huguinn and Muninn did most of the work tbh) Draxum considers Leo to be a biproduct/fragment of a failed experiment and uses Leo more as an errand boy than anything else. Because of that Leo’s and Draxum’s relationship is also distant. Leo acts nonchalant and sarcastic for the most part, but he can’t help but want to please Draxum. Leo knows about his brothers and even tried looking for them early on, but eventually gave up. He and Donnie meet first. Also he sneaks out to get pizza at Hueso’s when he’s bored.

Raph: His and Mikey’s stories start out intertwined. They both ended up in the hidden city and lived out the early years of their lives there. When he was around 7 years old, Mikey being 5, Raph was taken as a contestant for a battle royale at the nexus, composed entirely of young yokai. (The battle nexus is quite literally a gladiator ring where contestants kill one another) Raph was taken due to his large size, and after managing to survive the battle royale, Big Mama allowed him to stay and become a fully fledged fighter at the nexus. He moved his way up in rank and became one of the top Nexus champions under the stage name, The Beast. He’s soft spoken and quick to anger at first, having received so little friendly interactions.

Mikey: He and Raph lived in the hidden city together until Raph was taken when he was around 5 years old. After that he was basically left to fend for himself. He survived via stealing and living on rooftops and alleys Aladdin style. He’s incredibly agile and a master pickpocket. He even made a name for himself in the district where he lives as the local thief. This, however, hasn’t dampened his spirits at all and he’s just as bright and bubbly as ever. He loves anything and everything to do with art and often does graffiti wherever he can. He’s an avid battle nexus fan and watches the battles whenever he can ( Leo is also a huge fan).

I’ve legitimately had this au in my head for months and this isn’t even close to everything I’ve conjured up but I had to make something for it or else I’d explode. Despite there being a lot of room for angst in this au, I imagine it as more lighthearted and similar to the show in terms of comedy. If you read this far congrats and give me your strength please

This ENTIRE scene - The gentleness of him catching her? Her deliberately slow recovery?? The tenderness in that eye contact?? I was invading their privacy when I watched this episode

Arguably the most damning of all - The ending to her perfect dream is Neji holding her while she essentially professes she is finally home now that they are back together?? I was speechless tbh and still am over such an obvious display of affection

And this outwardly intimate moment was simply no accident for such a largely romance-avoidant anime

One of the images that flashed in his mind when he thought he was going to die was OF HER front and center????

She dresses up and wears lipstick for his Chunin match and then brags about him the entire fight?? I swear 90% of my girl's entire dialogue was his name

Then she went to comfort him after his match and he confirms that she already knew about the curse mark? Which means he felt safe enough with her to disclose such a painful secret and shameful part of his life?

Even twelve year old me was like this is clearly a thing. The effort the animators went to keep them close together in almost all of their scenes together as a pair is truly above and beyond

Character designs to match the Hashirama and his wife??

And then of course the meaningful nod to them fighting back to back since childhood so that she can cover his blind spot will never fail to make me sob

I could go on but in essence I'm still devastated the one couple that carried Naruto and early Shippuden in the reciprocal romance department never got their happy ending - a tragedy for certain

i am always a deep deep sucker for fics where will and nico know each other, at least slightly, before BoO. theyre so fascinating and for what. in this one in particular...oh will helping nico in the bronze jar is crazy. i don't want to spoil it but my ass was sat on that seat reading.

2. Stupid Teens by tihsho

Will likes getting gifts, and Nico likes the way Will blushes whenever he gives him anything. It should be a simple situation, but nothing's ever simple for Nico. Something's bothering Will, and Nico can't do anything about it. Never mind that he still can't seem to put a name to these feelings, either. Maybe there's a point in here about anger and nuance, or maybe it's a point about being young, or self acceptance, or whatever else. Or maybe Nico's just reading into it too much.

yes the homophobia scene is a little gratuitous. HOWEVER. the beginning scene is so dorky and ridiculous that i actually smile WIDE every time, first time i read it i laughed out loud. and the whole nico likes to spoil will a little bit (a lot bit) even well before they got together headcanon is GODSENT its one of my favourites. and i also like in this one how will maybe needs a minute to get comfortable in his sexuality too!!

3. Find Happiness in Misery by percyspandapillowpet

"Nothing can make me happy, Solace," he spat bitterly before turning away and wiping furiously at his face. "I like to try." --- In which Nico is searching for happiness, for his childhood, and for a Christmas present.

this is an older fic, but i think it still holds up!! i love any fic that goes over the whole mythomagic thing tbh. theres so much story potential there and this fic had a very sweet premise.

4. Looks Like We'll Be Trapped Here For A While by percyspandapillowpet

Nico stopped in his tracks and turned towards Will. “The Aphrodite cabin is planning to prank us. Today.” Will raised his eyebrows. “How do you know?” "They were talking about it. I just heard them.” Sighing as if it were just what he was expecting to hear this morning, Will reached up to scratch the back of his head. “Okay. What do you want to do about it?” Nico pondered this for a moment. “I think we should hide.” “Hide? Where?” Will asked. “We can’t leave camp, and it’ll be awfully boring to stay in the forest or something all day.” After a quick mental scan of all possible locations, Nico realized there was only one unfortunate solution. “Um…how about my cabin?”

cheesy and fun!! the mythomagic scene in particular made me giggle. in particular i love this part and feel like you should all be made aware of it:

“It’s…a game I used to play, when I was little,” he replied carefully.

Will looked up at him. “Do you still remember how to play?”

He felt his entire face turning red. “Well…kind of, I guess, but I’ve outgrown it…”

Will glanced at the back of the box. “What’s the attack power of Athena?”

“Five thousand,” Nico replied automatically, and then immediately groaned. That stupid game was so hardwired into his brain, and now Will was going know how much of a weird geek he was—

But Will was smiling. “That’s adorable. Teach me how to play.”

5. Pawsitively Perfect by percyspandapillowpet

“Is that…” Nico couldn’t even finish is sentence when suddenly the thing mewed. A moment afterwards, it revealed its tiny brown face, turning to face the son of Hades with round, curious eyes that seemed much too large for the rest of its head. Nico would be lying if he said it wasn’t the most adorable little creature he had ever laid eyes upon. But soon enough, the reality hit him. Will had a cat. Cats were not allowed in camp. Will had brought the cat into the Hades cabin, so if they were caught, they would likely both get in trouble. Not that Nico was scared of getting in trouble with the cleaning harpies—it was safe to say he’d been through a lot worse. What he didn’t think he could handle was the shame of being ridiculed as the kid who tried to hide a kitten with Will Solace. Jason would never let it go. Nico glanced from the kitten’s face back up to Will’s, which was somehow equally as endearing with his pleading-blue-puppy eyes. He knew what he was going to ask just from his expression. He sighed. “Will, you can’t keep it.”

AITA for telling my friend I thought he was autistic and making him cry?

I (25F) have been casual friends with "M" (25M) for several years. We're not super close friends (or at least, I'm not super close to him, I suspect he is more emotionally invested in our friendship than me. Also, according to several classmates back in college, he had a crush on me. Idk, but seems possible based on his actions. I'm gay and now have a gf, he's always been very chill and respectful about any feelings he may or may not have). Honestly, our interests, energy levels, and socializing preferences are not super compatible, but he's a good person, and we've stayed in touch after college, occasionally meeting up every few months for a hike.

For the last 5 years, I assumed he was autistic. I am also autistic (got diagnosed in my teens) and noticed a ton of autistic/neurodivergent traits as soon as I met M. TBH that's one of the big reasons we became and stayed friends, we may not be 100% compatible as friends/people but neither of us have to climb over all the neurotypical social rules and stigmas just to hang out. I've talked about my experiences with autism with him, in a commiserating/companion-type way, and we both talked about our very different childhood experiences with speech therapy and special ed.

Anyways, I had casually told my gf and mom that M's autistic (my mom got diagnosed with autism a few years ago, after I did, and my gf recently got diagnosed after both of us recognized she had similar autistic traits as me). M visited me 2 or 3 months ago and we went hiking, like usual. Afterwards, we were hanging out at my house (I live with my parents, my job's close and there's few apartments here) and M was talking about how he got fired from his job a few months ago, and was having trouble finding a new job. He was about to leave, and I left for a few min. When I came back my mom was telling M about how he should talk with HR at any future job about his autism because he was probably fired in large part due to ableism (I agree ableism played a role in his firing, probably because his bosses were shit at actually communicating and assumed everyone were mind readers). M was pretty obviously uncomfortable, and my mom is not tactful or very sensitive, so I intervened and we left.

The two of us talked for a few min. It turned out that he is Not Autistic (or at least, not diagnosed). I told him the reason my mom thought he was autistic is because I assumed he was and told her. It turns out that he has a lot of shame and negative emotions about his time in speech therapy and special ed as a kid (he had always talked about it as though they were annoying, sometime unnecessary, sometimes helpful, so I didn't know this) and some internalized ableism directed at himself. I mostly talked about my experiences with autism and getting diagnosed, and emphasized that, although I thought he had autism/neurodivergence, I'm not an expert and not trying to tell him what he is, and also that autism (especially for me) is not a bad thing. It was awkward and uncomfy for both of us, and by the end M was visibly very upset. I apologized and let him go. Before he shut the garage door I heard him start to sob. A few hours later (he lives about 2 hrs away) I texted him to apologize and reiterate what I had said earlier. He said it was ok, but idk. We've texted some, and called once since this, but haven't seen each other yet.

ok note to self i have to stop calling things elaborate when in reality i mean that i think about them really hard before i fall asleep and then promptly forget anything interesting afterward. but of course i'd love to discuss this very vague universe some more!! :')

honestly this is all an extremely self-indulgent exercise because i'm just a huge sucker for the combined secret relationship + famous/non-famous trope, and i will always read/write it for any ship iteration that presents itself! like there is nothing i love more than understated displays of devotion, especially when it plays into the 4th wall socmed fuckery space of one half being famous and having an otherwise large social profile and the other being very lowkey and resisting any publicity about themselves... in that vein i can't tell whether the concept is super cringe & embarrassing (well i can & i know it is, but the question is whether that is enough to Stop Me!!!) because obviously lando dating some Boring Dude requires a er... certain suspension of disbelief (also sorry for any unintentional disrespect to maxf), but what is fandom for if not making stupid shit up <3

anyway the secretwag concept also developed from two things, 1) how much i enjoy & endorse oscar's private-not-secret relationship philosophy + 2) lando's extreme loyalty to & dependence on all of his childhood relationships, so the idea kind of took root as "what if oscar→lando what lily→oscar (and also kind of what maxf→lando)" but just with more of lando's friendgroup dynamix & his streamer identity folded into the mix. the origins of their rship are what remain the most ambiguous & handwavey 2 me but in short they'd somehow meet when they were younger (maybe oscar is the same age as lando, maybe lando stayed in school longer, maybe oscar moved to the uk earlier and they met during their karting days... idk!!!) except then because of finances oscar decides to go into engineering and gives up on motorsport pretty early on.

(tbh i always struggle with justifying non-driverness in canon divergence fic because i'm like WELL REALISTICALLY oscar would just go into another professional racing category if f1 weren't feasible, BUT ignoring that) i think oscar would objectively be a super adjusted engineering student and would thrive academically / not stew in self-pity about giving up racing, so i really like this idea of like... sure, oscar is One Of The Lads, but unlike most people in lando's life who revolve around his work somehow or otherwise reflect his level of celebrity—drivers, the quadrant team, d-grade influencers & djs & social media personalities—oscar is just... Oscar. he's the smartest person lando knows and his love language is quality time and lando is the one usually doing acts of service for all his friends but oscar always wordlessly & unquestionably reciprocates that for him (lando annoying oscar into giving him a massage every night and oscar conceding immediately like ok... jon who❤️) and while lando has to go out of his way to navigate/manage the emotions of those around him and feels indebted to all his friendships he's never had to do that for oscar because oscar is the steadiest part of his life. and then obviously at some point when they're young dumb & drunk they get fucked up about it and start dating on the dl

(waves hands) anyway IDK but i'm just stuck on the image of like lando at 19 starting his first season of f1 and being raw and uncertain of himself and constantly catastrophizing about the future and trying to build out his brand and prove himself, and even like maxf is racing full-time that year, but at least he has oscar who's away at uni (in slightly aged up verse) and shows up at his place every weekend to ground him... like oscar never sugarcoats anything OR doubts himself OR needs lando to be any less open about his irrational fears so lando is like damnnn your cringefail earnestness and clear-eyed perspective of reality has kind of bewitched me *momentarily healed* etc. ft. domestic bants & the birth of master baker oscarpastry when covid hits and everything goes virtual & they quarantine together... lando starts streaming regularly and there's just this random dude in the background of half his streams and chat is like "???" every time like. Who is that + Why is he australian + Why is he cooking you dinner at 1am. his only social media profile is a private ig page with 50 followers.

+ after grad they keep living together and oscar becomes a wfh developer and i imagine him being very financially steady and self-sufficient but also like... deeply LAZY, so he has 0 ambition or intention to chase anything more demanding and is happy to just do his boring software job + be lando's househusband after hours LOL. like bringing lando pastries at quadrant shoots (ty chel 4 this image) between dull code reviews & expertly ducking away from the landolog camera & letting lando drive them around in his stupid gimmick cars and just generally toeing the line perfectly of being invested in lando's success and caring as deeply about motorsport as he does and even kicking his ass in iracing sometimes because he's kept up with sim racing but also keeping his ego in check and not making him engage in the world/politics/circus of f1 more than he has the capacity for on their off-weekends *__* finally lando is like babe i need to go commit tax fraud in monaco and oscar is just like ❤️ ok ❤️ we can move out tomorrow ❤️ and they find a tiny flat that's deeply overpriced but it's Them and it works. oscar plans his days off so he can go to half the races but nobody ever even notices him because the photographers don't know he exists.... except for maxv who lives in their building and met oscar once and was immediately like I Respect You #fellowsimracer so now whenever he sees oscar they get caught up in a conversation for like 30 minutes about random nerd shit and lando is very discombobulated about it every time. on the other hand maxf has been trying to be chill about lando of all people having been in a healthy committed relationship for the past 6-ish years so he frequently gets into trouble for making bad jokes about their sex life on stream that everyone thinks is them being homophobic etc. etc. ANYWAY YOU GET THE GIST OF IT!!!

it’s a hot summer day and you and iwaizumi walk to the grocery store to buy ice cream. being neighbors and childhood friends, the two of you practically do everything together. which is why after buying the cold sweet treats, the two of you head to your “secret hideout”.

a long time ago you had discovered a large willow tree out of sight of any passerby’s, and deemed it a secret hideout. naturally, being close friends with iwaizumi lead you to sharing your finding with him. the two of you often hid there and played with action figures. iwaizumi was usually godzilla, and you often played as king kong. each battle had a different outcome, and neither of you had any clue who was going to win until the final move. recently, neither of you brought the action figures. you were both in the third year of high school, so you didn’t play with them as often. only occasionally.

most days, the two of you liked to talk and joke about the most random things. perhaps a neighbor was opening her mailbox while wearing pajamas with ducks on them. maybe one of you had spotted two children wearing a large trench coat trying to enter the movies. not all conversations were about the people living in the same city, but a lot of them were.

today, the two of you are joking about a little girl who bit into a lemon at the grocery store earlier.

“i saw her picking up a lemon when her dad’s back was turned, and she bit into it! and she made the funniest face. it looked like-,” iwaizumi says scrunching his face.

you laugh really hard at the face he’s making and try to imagine what the girl must’ve looked like.

“and when her dad turned around he didn’t see the lemon at first so he looked like a fish out of water trying to figure out what was happening!” iwaizumi laughs while imitating the confused dad.

seeing iwaizumi open and close his mouth repeatedly made you laugh so hard you start shaking. your stomach hurts from laughing so you lightly punch iwaizumi in the arm as revenge.

he feels something cold touch his arm so he stops and looks down. you notice him pausing so you look down as well. iwaizumi is wearing a tank top and there on his bare arm is a smear of ice cream. you forgot you were holding ice cream when you punched him since you were laughing so hard.

“oh my bad! did we get any napkins?”

“no, we didn’t.”

you panic and use the only solution you can think of at the moment. you lick the ice cream off his arm.

the two of you short circuit. there’s no way that you just did that. no way. you were hallucinating. totally.

iwaizumi on the other hand was still processing what just happened. his mind is blank before it floods with thoughts. his best friend -no, his crush- of who knows how long just licked his arm. he’s not sure if you like him back the way he does, but he prays you do. did you not know what you were doing to him?

“oh my god. im so sorry. i shouldn’t have. what was i thinking??” you ramble.

“hey, it’s ok,” he responds in a calm voice. in a quieter one he adds on, “i kinda liked it.”

your eyes open widely; you had heard what he whispered. although flustered, you tease him back.

“it sure tasted nice. your arms are so yummy.”

Alaz is ML’s bad dude turned ally half brother from the upper class. Asi is ML’s platonic female friend from the gutter. Together they are FIRE!!!!

I like the main OTP just fine but these two are EVERYTHING!!! Bonus for my fave thing - a character realizing a main won’t love them and moving on (Alaz used to be into FL who chose his brother.)

PS confession time - I enjoyed Yabani but I put it aside for a while in large part because I liked Alaz and was worried they were setting him up to be the enemy bad dude to our long-suffering (and awesome, I like him!) main and I wanted him to be an ally with his own story - like his parents did him dirty tbh. His dad is a (hidden) psychopath and his mom spent his entire childhood spoiling him materially and ignoring him emotionally, only consumed by her other lost son. There is no way you wouldn’t grow up utterly fucked up with THAT set up!

Anyway, they are awesome and I love them and honestly when they are on, nobody does ships as much to my specific specs as Turkish shows.

Age is confusing in the World Of Cars universe and I wanna rant a bit.

I'm currently in the very, very early pre-planning and research phase for a Planes fic idea I want to write, and I decided to try and do some calculation for character ages. Not really plot relevant, but a good frame of reference to have none the less.

I decided to try and figure out Cabbie's age first, since he's presumably the oldest.

I always thought the idea that he was apart of the Korean war (and by extension Vietnam war) was just very popular fanon, but no! It's actually mentioned in the Meet the Planes book.

The Korean war took place from 1950 to 1953, meaning that, during 2014, the time the movie was set in/released, he could be around 64-61 years old assuming he was made (born? manufactured?) explicitly for the war.

This causes problems for me! In the canon cars universe, if I'm not forgetting anything, it is unknown whether or not characters are just...brought into this world as adults or if they have a childhood like real people. It also could be very possible that cars characters live longer then humans on account of them being vehicles.

Even then, I want to make this fic a human AU, meaning I have to slap on an extra 18 years to make it actually possible for a human Cabbie to join the military.

This means he'd be about 82-79 years old.

I'm all for having old characters in my fic, but Cabbie is also an aerial firefighter and I don't know if they'd let someone that old still work.

I'm just stuck between a rock and a hard place, haha. Do I keep the fact he was in the Korean war, the one piece of real backstory we have for him, and just kind of wave away the age issue? Do I retcon the Korean war stuff and make him be much younger, thus making it more plausible he's still apart of the team, but removing a large part of his character both canon (which, to be fair, isn't a lot) and fanon wise? I honestly don't know what's the best option tbh

EIther way, Cabbie is a really cool characters based off a cool, old plane model and thus causes me MANY issues because of that old plane model.

Looooved your thoughts on homeschooling as someone that comes from a country where that's not a thing - not just that, it's also illegal.

My parents wanted me to skip a grade because I was excelling in school in like the 3/4th grade and all my teachers were advising against it. They highlighted how important it was for me to socialize with kids my age, and how difficult it would be for me to fit in with kids that were older not just because they all already knew each other, but also because I would have to do double the work - learning stuff at a higher grade + socializing with kids in established friendship groups. I am sooo grateful my teachers looked for my best interests instead of just listening to my parents because I was already a quiet kid with few friends and it would have made my life immensely more difficult. I suspect I may be on the autism spectrum but I never got tested as a kid despite lacking social skills and I can't really get tested now because therapists here don't think that's a thing they can test adults for so I'm kinda stuck not really knowing just suspecting. But socializing - and socializing irl - is incredibly important, even for adults, and while I was chill being isolated during the pandemic lockdowns, it did set back some of the skills I used to have. It's even more important for kids that don't have those skills to begin with because they don't have enough life experience because they're young.

I’m glad your teachers did that for you - there honestly is almost no evidence that suggests that bumping students up a grade is at all helpful for academic growth, and it is SO frustrating when that is proposed as an option. Are there always going to be kids who pick things up faster than their peers? Absolutely. Does that mean we can just… not teach them all the concepts that get taught in 3rd grade? Fucking?? No???? Like, no amount of natural intellect is going to help a ten-year-old kid just suddenly learn their multiplication tables and the differences between verbs and nouns.

Because school! Is not really about cramming knowledge into brains - like obviously it is, but this is definitely not the format that imparts knowledge most efficiently. Tbh? The most important part of school overall over the course of an entire childhood? Is the social/emotional development. In fact, like I said in those tags, that is 110% what took the hardest hit because of COVID. Teachers are scrambling right now to come up with ways to catch students up on their social/emotional learning (SEL), which is REALLY HARD because so much of it is just… baked into the way school…. is.

Learning how to sit quietly and listen, how to have discussions in a large group, how to work in smaller groups, how to be considerate of the people around you, how to exist in a shared space… all of those are lessons that are part of elementary education, but it’s been so long since any teacher has had to think hard about how to teach them - even if kids forget their math facts over the summer, they’re not going to forget about the concept of raising their hands.

Anyway, I’m not gonna soap-box, but it’s been so rough to teach these past few years after COVID specifically because all of these kids were basically homeschooled for 6 months - 2 years, and none of them have an innate understanding of how to Exist In The World, which means that none of them are able to learn from each other either. It’s almost like every kid in the whole world got tossed onto the spectrum all at once, but just in the “lack of understanding of social expectations” wedge.

Tl;dr: things suck in schools rn bc every kid got homeschooled for an itty bitty chunk of time. Imagine how much it might fuck up kids who are homeschooled for their entire childhoods.

Gilmore Girls:

The revival really isn’t that bad, it’s just not what everyone wanted. It’s not even necessarily what I want but I enjoy it for what it is.

Rory really isn’t that bad, she’s just never been as good as anyone in the show thinks she is - because no one is that good. I don’t mind that her life fell apart and she had to try again, it’s the most relatable shit in the world. Characters having to rebuild their lives is very interesting to me, though.

Logan and Rory are like Luke and Lorelai: Rory is the hermit like Luke and Logan is the sunshine-y extrovert who gets her out of her shell like Lorelai does with Luke. Logan has always had more in common with Lorelai than he does with Christopher. (Also plays into my thoughts about how Rory and Lorelai are also two very fundamentally different characters and it's unfair to put Rory into the Lorelai mould.)

Logan isn’t the Tristan replacement, Jess was. He came in the show just as CMM was leaving and stepped into the role of Forrester’s antagonist/rival. Tristan and Logan are superficially alike but Jess and Tristan fulfilled the same role in Rory’s life, the unsafe option in comparison to Forrester. Tristan and Rory wouldn’t have been anything like Logan and Rory. I like Jess a lot more than I like Tristan so in a way i’m glad it worked out the way it did with CMM leaving. Also learning that Jess’ character was only created as a way to prevent Luke and Lorelai from getting together definitely colors my perception of his character arc.

Lorelai is right and Emily is right and that’s kind of the point. Lorelai did have a miserable lonely childhood with people who didn’t understand her. Emily did give everything she had to a daughter who rejected her. The point has always been that Lorelai did not belong in her parents’ world and they don’t understand that so they can only be hurt by her rejection.

Riverdale:

disclaimer: i saw like…ten episodes of this show.

1. The switch up on Alice Cooper’s character is terrible and I hate that people love her when she was clearly controlling and cruel to her daughters, they should not have made her a lovable character.

2. It would’ve been more interesting if Cheryl killed Jason. On purpose. I don’t want to elaborate too much because I have a fic in the works along these lines but this is the entire reason I started the show in the first place: I thought Cheryl was the one who murdered Jason and I was so into that.

3. Jughead should’ve been asexual/aromantic like his comic book counterpart. Not telling the cole sprouse fans not to thirst, y’all do y’all my babies tbh, just saying it would’ve been great center stage representation that the ace/aro community deserves and rarely gets. (Which is a large part of my disinterest in bughead.)

4. Betty and Cheryl have a more interesting dynamic than Veronica and Betty.

5. idek if this is unpopular or not but like this show basically ripped off every show ever so it’s really not that unique. it’s like Glee, Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, and Twin Peaks had a baby and then no one ever told that baby "No" or gave it any structure so it grew up to be this mess who can’t commit to any storyline and just "yes and"-ed itself into the ground.

Apologies if this has been answered before, but what are some of your favorite books? I always enjoy hearing what writers I admire enjoy reading.

Some stuff I've really enjoyed this year has been:

A Boy's Own Story by Edmund White. It's a coming of age of a gay boy in 1950s America, a fictionalized account of White's own life. It has gorgeous prose and Anne Rice herself read and liked this one. It's part of a trilogy but I have yet to get the second book.

Enigma Variations by Andre Aciman. Another book that follows a bisexual man from childhood to adulthood and all the loves he had. Aciman's women are pretty hollow and uninteresting tbh but the prose he gets into when he writes about men and intimacy is insane, he romanticizes knowing all of someone's body and its functions in a delicious way.

Crash by JG Ballard. Defies explanation. Literally every paragraph is sex and traumatic physical injuries and stalking and car crashes and it should be repetitive but it's not, it's just an incredible exploration of how far a writer can escalate the same topic within a novel.

God: An Anatomy by Francesca Stavrakopoulou. An exploration of how the physical body of christ is described in the bible, how certain euphemisms were deliberately mistranslated and misconstrued over time (did you know 'washing someone's feet' was an ancient euphemism for oral sex?). Really interesting stuff, I'm not religious but I really enjoy historical explorations that put biblical stuff in context.

On Writing by Stephan King. If you're a fic writer, this book is required writing. You don't have to follow any of his advice but it really helped me drop all the shit pounded into my brain in high school/college about having to deeply and intricately plan every single thing you write. I advise finding the edition that contains a rough draft and his own edit marked version of the same short story, it's illuminating to see a pro's rough work.

(I'm really bad at keeping track of what I've read honestly, and outside of VC I largely read nonfiction, so this is by no means a 'favorites of all time' list haha)
