hey punks wanna learn some film history
what do you know about movies? well, movies are the medium through which we meet lovely lil shits like Lumiere, the homage-decked film hero who also happens to be a candelabra. but besides that, what do you know about movies?
did you know that one of the major forces behind movies were two dudes named lumiere?
i’m not shitting you. Lumiere literally invented the movies.
it was the 1890s and France was hoppin’ and lots of people were getting into the new technology of moving pictures. two of those people were the Lumiere bros.
The Lumiere bros—obviously descendants of a talking candlestick—worked in the photography biz, and these two merry fuckers helped produce some of the tech that made movies possible. Some of the earliest possible movies are by these two. They’re fucking boring movies—trains pulling into stations, and people moving around—but they were a HUGE fucking deal. when people sat down to watch this “ “ mo vie ““ thing, and then a fucking train came blaring out of the screen at them, people literally SCREAMED. they thought this blurry black and white train was gonna leap out of the fucking screen and kill them. Movie magic, guys.

Below is another fucking piece of fascinating cinema. It’s some people leaving a factory. Look, I’m not saying they were imaginative filmmakers, but they were some of the first.

The Lumieres’ work kicked off the imaginations of other filmmakers, who saw this new tech and were like “???? what if we didn’t just film fucking boring stuff??? what if we, like, made a train fly into the sun”

The above is the work of George Méliès. It is trippy shit. You wanna see some early special effects? How weird do you wanna get?

You thought I was fucking kidding, weren’t you.
Anyway, so once the Lumieres took their videos of trains, and other people saw it and were like “LET’S MAKE IT SCARY,” the Lumiere bros dropped that shit and went and did other things. like took lovely colored pictures. in fucking 1910.

this shit is ethereal and the color quality is a-fucking-plus. in 1910?? the fuck. The Lumiere bros were clearly extra as fuck. Must run in the family
So, anyway, if you ever wondered why Lumiere was such a lil piece of shit who clearly loves movies so fucking much he’ll throw in references to Singin’ in the Rain in the middle of eighteenth century France: THAT’S why. the lil fucker has been tied up in them since 1890-something.
man but movies are cool.
