#a new dc comic with superman and the authority is coming out
blorb-el · 2 years
Note
saw your post about the things you'd like to see in a superman story and now i'm curious about the nsfw version 👀 if you'd like to share ofc!
mmm. see I have tried not to nsfw on this blog but you know what. fuck it. if famous author vladimir nabokov wrote a horny superman poem and had the absolute temerity to make it good and then send it to the new yorker and ask them to publish it for money in 19fucking42... (x) then i can do whatever i want on my blog
anyway. some Concepts. this turned out as less fic ideas and more personal headcanons. LONG post since i mostly haven’t talked about this. all of these are Free Real Estate if anyone is inspired by them
Even more for nsfw headcanons than sfw, I am above all interested in what the author is interested in. like, choking does nothing for me in and of itself, but everyone was so dang enthusiastic about it that now i'm invested and would absolutely read That Fic
for nsfw headcanons I have two different headcanon versions of clark for any piece of dc media. (yes this is how my brain works. blorbo all the way down). one looks identical to or nearly identical to a human. usually a cis man, however trans man clark also very good. the other has genitals that cannot be mistaken for human, usually some kind of retractable system. plus or minus some good ol' tentacles depending on the vibe. I went a little more into this + the Kryptonian names for such parts here. most of my headcanons are for alien biology clark, but going into a fic I think of any alien biology as a bonus, I don't expect it (there are, after all, a whole bunch of canon panels that go He Looks Totally Human No Xeno Here Guys!!. Every time I see one of these I like to imagine that some poor sucker at DC has seen something they do not like in the alien biology tag on ao3.)
A Clark who looks human I think is fairly well adjusted, he's had sex, he knows what he likes and what he doesn’t even if he may have hangups about asking for it. A Clark pre-serious relationship that doesn't look human, I hc has either not had sex or has only ever had sex with his clothes on and without being touched himself, only giving (for some reason allstar gives me this vibe) (sidenote: i do not mean to imply that this is not a perfectly valid and fulfilling sex life for many people!). he does genuinely enjoy being a service top. he just would also like to be in a relationship with someone who he could trust with his identity...
then he meets Lori in college (lori lemaris, for the uninitiated, is precrisis superman’s hot mermaid college gf, which is a sentence that rules. she should come back in a comic not written by frank fucking m*ller). alien4mermaid. for the first time he’s in a relationship with someone who not only knows that he’s not human but is not human herself. When she has to return to Atlantis it breaks his heart (canon). this ties into my Ideal Superman Timeline, where this is where he leaves college, at the end of his sophomore year, and scrapes together the rest of his degree with remote credits while traveling the world, learning what doing good looks like worldwide, and Finding HimselfTM. however this post is not about that.
that’s the background I usually have in the back of my little brain when I’m writing. Other stuff, mostly superbat but relevant to clois...
despite not having much experience he’s like. annoyingly good at pleasing his partner because 1. i said so 2. he is incredibly focused on their pleasure and 3. he’s got built in biofeedback receptors.
early on i think he absolutely ties himself in knots about wanting something, being allowed to want something, and feeling strange about judging himself for wanting something. the queer experience. man’s on three levels of overthinking. like, i think he enjoys the feeling of holding his partner’s arms down or thighs apart while he’s going down on them, feeling the muscles flex against his hands, knowing he has them pinned, but at the same time feels guilty about liking it.
ultimately he’s pretty vanilla himself, but since his partner’s pleasure is so important to him, he’s open to experiment and try things out.
Again early on, I think this backfires. There are certain things he is really uncomfortable with that i don’t think he’s aware of until they come up. He doesn’t like feeling examined or scrutinized, which I think would come up with Bruce early on in their relationship. Something about an old childhood fear of being looked at too closely. For the first few times, I think he’s more comfortable with the lights off.
dcau. bruce wants to try some sort of roleplay scene involving ropes/bondage and clark goes along with it because he can tell bruce likes it, but at the same time he’s lowkey getting triggered... clark’s very good at hiding stress, but bruce notices and pauses before it goes too far. clark just lies there still as a statue for a few seconds, says the safeword (’pearl’), and just as bruce is reaching out he’s bolted straight out through the window and up and away. bruce feels like garbage. clark feels like garbage. clark comes back once he’s ready, and because bruce doesn’t press for details, clark feels safe enough to choke out a few words explaining that it reminded him of what happened on apokolips with lashina. clark Gets Help. this fixes the ENTIRE dcau from that point on and neither of them die sad and alone in bapmanbeyond.
similarly i know it’s a fic trope but i don’t think he finds depowered/blue kryptonite sex inherently more enjoyable. in my headcanon he’s grown up with his powers - while they can be overwhelming at times, they’re also comforting, and the sudden silence is distracting. Also at any given time when he’s depowered there’s a little voice in his head going ‘what if an airplane has a jet engine failure right now. do you know how many people could die? and you’re doing this to get off? selfish.’ this is a statistical improbability, of course, but it’s bronze age canon he has anxious thoughts like this.
retractable dick very handy in such emergency circumstances. the annoying thing about sex with clark is that it’s very very good 92% of the time but 8% of the time they will be deep into it and then clark will freeze, do the damn head tilt and then WOOOOSH. and his partner can’t even feel bad about it because they’re adults and both understand that saving a life is more important than an orgasm. besides he will make it up to them thoroughly.
he gets WAY better at communicating about sex and desire eventually, but only really with his partner. i think at heart he’s a modest and reserved person, i don’t think he’s ever going to be joining in “locker room talk.” (however AU where he does is incredibly funny)
("praise... 'kink'??? what do you mean praise 'kink.' what do you MEAN. are you people not praising your partners??? ARE YOU NOT LETTING THEM KNOW HOW WONDERFUL THEY ARE??? THAT'S - PEOPLE THINK OF PRAISE AS A KINK?????!!" - a man at the absolute end of his rope. facial expressions going through all five stages of grief.)
leaves hickeys on bruce’s neck, mostly because he wants to and he knows bruce is into it, but also knows the man’s got an inexhaustible supply of turtlenecks. he is aware of exactly where the turtlenecks end and does not leave hickeys higher than that. possessive streak, in a very considerate way, but still.
as he gets more secure and comfortable he loses the jealousy. possibly he enjoys the idea that bruce has so much experience and still chooses him.
if his partner says ‘do what you want with me, i’m all yours,’ i think 9/10 times it’s slow body worship and massage. sometimes not sex, sometimes it’s just too relaxing. it’s an indulgence for him to just be allowed to be slow and present. physical touch is a big love language and once he’s in a relationship he can freely give it, he loves to do just that.
the last 1/10 times is when he’s tired and stressed. he can and will pick up his partner and rail them into the mattress/against the wall/into thin air while floating. this is where the auxiliary tentacles come in handy. he gets them off though even if it’s supposed to be just about him for once, he feels too weird if he comes and his partner doesn’t.
on really really bad days his partner will pick up on how down he’s feeling and will uno reverse card and body worship him and it will make him cry a little
finally here are some panels that made me break out laughing. first off. he can tell just how hard he's getting. ah. impacted.
Tumblr media
(action 423) imagine he's the one getting railed and it’s going Great and then all of a sudden he’s just like. “velocity - 4mph. impact pressure - 15ppi.” in his best Broadcaster Anchorman Voice. i think this would be very funny. bruce would be into it lois would NOT, however it would make her crack up laughing, which is what he'd be going for, so everybody wins. he’s a doofus at times and sex is NOT excluded from that
Tumblr media
(WF 104) vibrators don't work on him. very sad! however. with superspeed. he IS the vibrator. (supers :handshake: flashes). I don't think he'd be much for toys himself, I think there's something very satisfying to him about body-to-body contact, but if a partner requested them he's happy to indulge them.

Any thoughts on the theory that Delirium is the only Endless that can break the fourth wall / is aware of their nature as graphic novel characters? I've seen it mentioned as an explanation to why she knows of things outside Destiny's garden.
oh interesting
i've never heard that theory before, but i am perfectly willing to believe it! (at least in the comics universe, dunno about the show)
both because a) delirium has literally broken the fourth wall before, to get back to her realm when she was upset
Tumblr media
and b) the reason i say comics more than show, is that the netflix show is standalone. but the comics are dcu. and while it's definitely its own story, the dcu is integrated into sandman - both in small ways, like neil gaiman populating the dreaming with minor forgotten characters from other dc stories, and in large ways, like dream finding himself suddenly in the aspect of the martian dream god in the presence of martian manhunter, and being surprised because he thought this aspect was dead, that there were no green martians left
and while my knowledge of dc is kinda sporadic, i have a friend who's super into it, so i have it on good authority that those kinda fourth wall breaks are not new for dc, i believe one of the superboys was actually from our universe and a fan of the superman comics before he found himself in that world?
so yeah, if we take destiny's book to be the complete respository of sandman comics (which would make sense, given volumes like overture where we get stuff like this)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
then yeah, since destiny's book is stated to contain everything in the universe, "there are things not in your book" is good evidence that delirium is very aware that the sandman comics are not the only universe out there, and that in at least one universe, they are fictional characters
(though if that is true that's one hell of a secret for delirium to have to keep to herself, she'd have the most responsibility of any of the endless)
(maybe also with dream, who is the only other endless we know to have definitively crossed universes when he rewrote the old one, it's confirmed even the endless forgot about the old universe, only dream remembers)
(i'd love to see a fic taking this headcanon, because that would mean delirium also knows of the old universe)
but that idea of responsibility brings me to another thing i've been thinking about in regards to delirium, which i think is the most tragic thing about her
there may be only one endless in charge of destiny, but i think the forces of fate act equally through destiny and delirium, just in opposite ways. if the endless represent the most fundamental parts of life, it makes sense that the oldest and youngest kinda bookend things this way
for the most part, she is everything i said in that post, she's a lot more aware than people assume of her
but she has moments of being unaware. times where the delirium takes over. and when she loses herself, fate takes control
like. sure, there were a lot of pieces surrounding dream's tragedy, and yes as any tragedy it does come down to the fact that dream was not the person who could ever have gotten himself out of that situation. but the situation still needs pieces to be moved into place.
destiny starts it off. and destiny gets both the privilege and the tragedy of knowing he has to start it. he calls a family dinner because it has to happen, which kicks off season of mists, which means dream makes that deal with loki, who kidnaps daniel, and now lyta's orchestrating dream's demise
delirium doesn't know what's going to happen. she just gets impulses that overtake her. it's been three hundred years since destruction left, but all of a sudden all she knows is she has to find him now. strongly enough that she's willing to ask every one of her siblings to help, despite admitting they scare her. strongly enough that she'll go on her own if she has to. strongly enough that it's the only thought in her mind, as the chaos within her makes her feel physically sick
Tumblr media
coincidentally, this is at the exact moment dream is brooding over thessaly and will take literally any distraction offered, which means he goes with delirium, which kickstarts a chain of deaths destruction accidentally set up centuries ago, which means they need to find destruction to stop it, which means dream has no choice but to get help from orpheus, and there's only one thing orpheus has wanted from dream these last 3000 years
delirium thought if she found destruction it would bring their family back together again. but all it did was make him go even further away, and cement another piece of dream's tragedy
and then there's kindly ones, the next time she loses herself. part of her can sense that something bad is about to happen, but she doesn't know what, she just knows she lost her dog, and has to find him. and she goes to visit destiny to help, and sees that dream's statue is visibly upset, so she goes to visit dream to try and cheer him up and distract him again like last time, but he can't come with her this time, so he just sends a nightmare to help her find barnabas. and then on the way she runs into nuala and tells her dream's in trouble and won't leave the dreaming, which nuala takes to mean the dreaming is the danger and she summons him, and dream can't find it in himself to refuse, which gives the kindly ones control over the dreaming
and from there delirium tries so hard to save dream but everyone she goes to for help just tells her it's too late. and in this instance they're right.
she sees so much and understands so much and in some ways she's actually one of the more stable endless, bc she may be delirium but her current state is resilient and sustainable compared to the knife's edge dream and desire especially are living on, trying not to break by just ignoring the things they can't handle
delirium's seen the deepest depths of what she can't handle and pulled herself back together again
but how much is that knowledge and tenacity worth, if when it comes down to it she causes the things she tries desperately to stop?
i haven't written a meta about this yet bc honestly i think about it and just wanna give del a hug
but this is a good place for it i think, bc like. how does that change, if delirium is aware that she's not in charge of her life?
i can't decide if it would wreck her further (or rather, has already wrecked her further) or if it doesn't change anything at all

Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story by Sarah Kuhn, Arielle Jovellanos (Illustrator)
Can Lois Lane open herself up to friendship, romance, and being vulnerable in order to get the future that's right for her?  She might have to change her entire life plan to find out. Ambitious small town girl Lois Lane tackles a summer in the big city with gusto, but a cavalcade of setbacks—including an annoying frenemy roommate, a beyond tedious internship at a suddenly corporatized website, and a boss who demotes her to coffee-fetching minion—threatens to derail her extremely detailed life plan. And, you know, her entire future. When Lois uncovers a potentially explosive scandal, she must team up with the last person she’d expect to publish her own website for young women. And as Lois discovers who she really is and what she actually wants, she becomes embroiled in her own scandal that could destroy everything she's worked so hard to create. From beloved author, Sarah Kuhn (Shadow of the Batgirl, Heroine Complex ), and with expressive and lively art by Arielle Jovellanos, comes a charming YA story about the strength it takes to embrace the messiness of life.
Review: I'm a fan of Heroine Complex, so you can imagine how excited I was to read Shadow of the Batgirl back in 2020 (review here!) -- Shadow of the Batgirl was just a ton of fun. So naturally, I had to read Girl Taking Over by Sarah Kuhn. Not just because I'm loving what DC Comics is doing in the YA graphic novel space, but because I'm a huge fan of Arielle Jovellanos's art.
Lois Lane is having a bit of a moment right now, especially with the new cartoon out. So it was fun to get into spirit by reading this particular Lois Lane story. It's a delightful, Asian American take on the scrappy teen reporter. Superman and Clark Kent are nowhere in sight, and the focus is solely on Lois Lane's story and her beginnings.
Lois and her once upon a time childhood friend who's not so friendly now discover that they're roommates for the summer while they pursue their passions. Of course, their summers don't go as planned, and the two Japanese American teens find themselves taking on injustice in their own unique ways to make their voices heard.
The art is colorful, high-energy, and so much fun. It goes hand-in-hand with Lois Lane's story and I really hope Jovellanos illustrates more DC comics in the future. The story is fairly straightforward and, like superhero stories tend to, requires a certain amount of suspension of disbelief. But if you're looking a fun, feel-good, inspirational story, this is it.
Get this wonderful graphic novel soon if you're interested in Lois Lane's story or just want a fun, hopeful YA graphic novel read for your summer.
Recommendation: Get it soon!

Really happy so far with what James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed of the first part of the new DCU slate!!! :D Chapter 1 is going to be called “Gods and Monsters”. Nice to see that this will have no affect on Matt Reeves’ movies/shows, “Joker 2″, the 2nd “Constantine” films, if the CW keeps any of their DC shows for next season, and the other cartoon series as they’ll all be branded as “DC Elseworlds” from now on. They also said that “Superman and Lois” will be able to go on till at least 2025 when their movie comes out but it’s The CW’s decision and they could get a final season next season if this one isn’t written to work that way. Also they will be keeping some of the current actors after “The Flash” movie creates this new DCU with Gal Galdot’s Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Zachary Levi’s Shazam, the “Blue Beetle” cast, Voila Davis’ Amanda Waller, and the entire “Peacemaker” cast all being confirmed to be a part of this new universe. They haven’t decided yet about Ezra Miller but I have a feeling they might just bring in Wally West as another Flash going by the new slate. So here’s my thoughts on the new movies/shows in order of how they’ll be released though “Peacemaker” season 2 is also now a part of it. The shows too will all be on HBO Max.
Creature Commandos (TV): This one is new to me as it’s a group of characters similar to the Universal Monsters that band together. It’ll be an animated show too but the actors who voice them will also play them in live action so that will be cool and it will fully connect to the other movies, shows, and games.
Waller (TV): This is the show James has been working on about Amanda Waller and it’ll include Viola Davis and fully connect to “Peacemaker”.
Superman Legacy (movie): This was the Superman movie already revealed with a new actor to be cast and we know he’ll be in his 20s and trying to live his life as a journalist and as Superman. It’s been dated now for July 2025.
Lanterns (TV): This is a new version of the “Green Lantern” show that was originally in the works from Greg Berlanti but is now being fully by Gunn and Safran. Very cool that Hal Jordan and John Stewart are going to be the leads of the first season though others will appear.
The Authority (movie): This is another I don’t know that much about but it sounds cool. I do recognize a few characters the mentioned from the comics and having appeared on shows like “Stargirl” and “Legends of Tomorrow”.
Paradise Lost (TV): This one sounds really cool as it’s a prequel about the Amazons before Diana was born. They even compared it to “Games to Thrones”. Sounds like it will still connect to Gal’s version too.
Batman & Robin: The Brave and the Bold (movie): This one got me excited as it’s another Batman movie but the Robin in this is his actual son Damian Wayne!!! :D They also confirmed the rest of the Batfamily will be in this too and starting their own movies connected of them. With Damian already here this means that Dick/Nightwing, Barbara/Batgirl/Oracle, and at least Jason/Red Hood should be around as well as Alfred. Possibly could include Tim/Red Robin, Stephanie/Spoiler, and Cassandra/Black Bat as James said these characters have been long neglected by the Batman films. Depends on what Reeves is doing too but I think they’ll be fine with Dick already as an adult here and if he’s a still a teen in Reeves’ movies/shows. They will be casting a new Bruce/Batman, so curious to find out who that will be. They also dated “The Batman 2″ for October 2025 too.
Booster Gold (TV): This has also been in the works for years and he too showed up on “Legends of Tomorrow” so it’s finally happening.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (movie): This will be cool to see too. Though not sure if Kara will still be played by Sasha Calle like in “The Flash” movie or if it’ll be a new actress as Sasha’s seems to be tied to Henry Cavill’s. They didn’t mention Sasha either as staying so might be another recast.
Swamp Thing (movie): This one has me so excited!!! :D I’ve loved Swamp Thing for years and that he’ll be in the movies again and tied to this new DCU. It’s going to be darker than the other movies and shows listed here and end the first chapter leading into the 2nd chapter.
Overall I’m really excited and glad they’re doing this more like Marvel now with such a larger plan and focusing on getting the scripts done first before they film. Also looking forward to finding out the castings as this is going to be a lot of actors.

James Gunn Reveals Next Slate of DC Films and TV Projects
Tumblr media
James Gunn released a video today revealing his and Peter Safran’s plans for the DC Universe going forward. One of the main plans is to connect the DCU across film, TV, gaming, and animation to make the characters consistent across the different platforms. Things that are outside of the mainstream continuity, like Matt Reeve’s Batman or Teen Titans Go, will be clearly labeled as DC Elseworlds. Gunn and Safran, along with other writers are mapping out an 8-10 year plan, with Chapter 1 being “Gods and Monsters.”
As for how often new content will release, the team Safran mentions “probably two movies and two HBO Max series per year.”
With the four projects coming out over the next year, Gunn states that Shazam! Fury of the Gods "connects very well.” Then The Flash will reset the DC Universe. The Blue Beetle will be next, followed by Aquaman 2, which will lead into the next few projects.
New projects in the “Gods and Monsters” chapter include the following:
Tumblr media
Creature Commandos, an HBO Max animated series written by Gunn. The team consists of Rick Flag, Sr., Nina Mazursky, Batman villain Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, The leader The Bride of Frankenstein, G.I. Robot, and Weasel.
Tumblr media
Waller, live action HBO Max series, will follow Amanda Waller, once again placed by Viola Davis. The series will take place between the first and second seasons of Peacemaker and is created by Christal Henry and Jeremy Carver.
Tumblr media
Superman: Legacy is a live action movie and what Gunn calls “the true beginning of the DCU.” Gunn is writing the screenplay, which will reportedly not be an origin story.  “It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.” (DC Comics)
Superman: Legacy is scheduled to release on July 11, 2025.
Tumblr media
Lanterns, a live-action HBO Max series follows Hal Jordan and John Stewart. They will discover a big mystery that will tie into the larger DCU.
Tumblr media
The Authority is a live action movie featuring the WildStorm characters, who will now be part of the DCU.
Tumblr media
Paradise Lost is a live action HBO Max series is an origin story for Paradise Island / Themyscira and takes place before Diana.
Tumblr media
The Brave and the Bold is a live action Batman movie follows Bruce and Damian Wayne and is based on Grant Morrison’s comic book run. Other members of the Bat-Family will also appear.
Tumblr media
Booster Gold is a live action HBO Max series following the titular superhero with imposter syndrome.
Tumblr media
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a live-action movie based on the Tom King and Bilquis Everly comic. Kara was raised on a chunk of Krypton for the first fourteen years of her life.
Tumblr media
Swamp Thing, a live-action movie will be an origin story for the character.

hi, can I please get a romantic match up for marvel and for dc? im an intp, 5w4, slytherin, true neutral, and a capricorn. I'm cisgender and my pronouns are she/her, and I'm bisexual with a heavier preference for guys. I'm 5 foot 2, fair skinned, and midsized. I also have brown curly hair just below my shoulders and light brown eyes. I'm usually wearing cuffed jeans, a shirt with some show or movie reference on it, and converse. My hobbies are writing (novels and poetry), reading (books and comics), baking, watching shows and movies, sometimes drawing, and playing piano. I love mythology and ancient history, and I'm very interested in anthropology. I would love to work in a museum, as well as become an author one day. I struggle with social anxiety and depression, but once I open up I can be prone to rambling to people I trust and I use humor a lot to cope. I'm a very loyal friend who loves to help solve problems. thanks so much if you get to mine!
Thank you for requesting a matchup! I hope you enjoy it! <3

Marvel;
Steve Rogers:
Tumblr media
⭐ You met Steve when he saved you during the 2012 alien invasion, brought to you proudly by Thor's brother, Loki; you almost didn't blame the god since he was practically the reason you got to meet Steve in the first place
⭐ And, as if by fate, you bumped into him again, and again, where you may ask? At the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum; believe it or not, you worked in the Captain America section, unknowing that you'd ever bump into Steve there; well, you recognized him, even when he wore a cap and fake glasses
⭐ Steve remembered you, how could he forget you? He was awestruck the moment he saved you from that large piece of falling concrete; he didn't waste the chance of spending time with you, getting to know you while wandering the museum
⭐ Soon enough, the two of you grew closer and closer, and with the help of hype from Bucky and Sam, Steve asked you out on a date; you of course said yes, going to a small cafe back in Steve's hometown, drinking coffee or tea as you told Steve all about your love for writing and him, his love for drawing
⭐ Steve finds you incredibly smart, is always protective of you if you are having a panic attack after a stressful day, and loves how you light up when rambling about ancient history and other topics you love; Steve is also fond of the memories when you and him got matching converse, writing the other's name on them, and Steve won't hesitate to try and bake with you when he can

DC;
Clark Kent:
Tumblr media
📰 You met Clark when you joined The Daily Planet, being the new secretary, you were busy returning some paperwork when you bumped into him; if felt like your world was going to explode, not only because you had bumped into someone on your first day, but because the person you bumped into was very attractive
It was very awkward, at least to you, but Clark, the one you bumped into, was so sweet; he apologized, offering to buy you a coffee at lunch since it was his fault that he bumped into you
Clark found you beautiful, from the way you spoke and shyly looked away at points to the way you played with your hair nervously, he felt bad that you felt so nervous around him; but as time goes on, you slowly grow out of that shell of yours and really, truly begin to enjoy your time with Clark
After a while of being friends, you actually got the courage to ask Clark out, and believe it or not, he said yes, and the rest is practically history; from cute dates, to long walks in the park talking about anthropology and photography, and even moving in with one another; you were inseparable
Clark trusts you completely, you being as loyal as they come, he finds the courage to tell you that he was Superman, and you were beyond happy that Clark trusted you that much to tell you; you both are soulmates, even though he came from the stars, you like to joke about him being your guardian angel, overall, you two are incredibly happy together

As someone who's deeply invested in comic books, I'm gonna tell you right now; the stories of the creators of a lot of these beloved characters are just as, if not even more intriguing, than the backstories of their characters.
Batman, for years, had only Bob Kane accredited as his creator, and he would constantly talk about being the sole creator of Batman. It took over 70 years for Bill Finger, the man who most people will tell you did most of the work, to even get his name on the comics. And there were other key players in helping shape and co-create that mythos that Bob brought in as part of his slew of ghost artists and ghost writers.
William Moulton Marston helped create an early version of the lie detector -- something you see highlighted in the Lasso of Truth belonging to his character, Wonder Woman. He also was in a polyamorous relationship, enjoyed bsdm, and believed a female empowerment revolution was coming and he was ready for it.
Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster were one of the first big fights to get proper crediting and payment to comic book creators. And, fun fact, you can tell pretty heavily that Superman and Clark Kent were based off of Siegel's appearance; and he ended up marrying the model that Schuster modeled Lois Lane off of, a woman named Joanne Kovacs. Which, you got admit, that's just cute.
A literal cult tried to recruit Jack Kirby because they loved his work so much, and he let them into his house and showed off what he'd been working on, while his wife Ros made them lunch. He also had some nazis call him, telling him they were waiting in the lobby for him so they could beat him up, for having Captain America punch Hitler. He literally said "Okay", rolled up his sleeves and headed on down there, with every intention to beat the shit out of them. There was no sign of them by the time he got to the lobby.
Gardner Fox was a New York lawyer and polymath turned writer. He is the reason why we have superhero teams, having created the very first one with the JSA and later also created the Justice League, and he's also the reason why comics, specifically DC, have multiverses. He's also responsible for being one of the lead writers to have gone to rework things in the Silver Age due to the Comics Code Authority and their rules being implemented. He also created Batgirl and did some of the early writing on Batman as well. This man is a legend.
And these are only like just a few examples, there's so many more out there and it can be genuinely fascianting to learn about them.

I was just wondering which one do you prefer more DC or marvel and how do you think DC can do better? Also thoughts on the new DC slate? I love your and your friends fics by the way. Great publishes and blogs everywhere :)
Thank you so much anony!!! This is an excellent question. I had to take a minute to think about. I prefer Marvel but I think that’s because I grew up on Marvel movies starting with Blade and on to X-men, Spider-Man and so on. I feel like as the culture becomes more inclusive in representation in comic book media, Marvel has progressed with it. This is in terms of movies and tv. I unfortunately have not come around to comics. I hope too but there’s a learning curve 😅
Ok back to the question. I have liked Batman movies in past. I even have a soft spot for Halle Berry’s Catwoman 🫣 but I feel like every since Batman vs Superman I have not been able to get into DC movies. The first Wonder Woman was excellent but 1984 was trash. Not everything Marvel puts out is good but when they are good, it’s GOOD. The comedic tone can be overdone but the diversity in storytelling and characters is way more grounded and interesting to me. So imagine my surprise when I discovered Titans. A superhero story for adults, with a Black female co-lead. I was immediately shook! The cast was so diverse and interesting and the story was engaging, dark when it needed to be with comedic levity and a found family heart at the center.
Ok I’m getting off topic. I’ll preface by saying I’m a millennial Black woman and DC doesn’t make things specifically with me in mind and that’s fine. However I find that they canceled a lot of properties with majority minority casts and/or leads. That immediately leaves a bad taste. Black Adam wasn’t great but there was hella potential. Batgirl should’ve been released on streaming. And so on…
I think with the current slate the only shows that outwardly appear diverse are Waller, Paradise Lost, and maybe Green Lanterns, that’s if they let John Stewart lead, doesn’t sound like it though, and The Authority. I know the Big 3 are the bread and butter but we’ve had a century of their stories at this point and I’ve learned that DC comics are so expansive and there are so many other interesting stories to tell.
Maybe they keep the Big 3 elseworld since they do the best financially and make DC studios the place where broader, more diverse stories are told. I’m titans biased and the fact that there are no titans stories planned for phase Chapter 1 is kinda wild. I’m going to give every property a fair chance but if they don’t meet my expectations then I’ll have to peace DC up and catch them when they reboot Titans 🤣😭

DC STUDIOS SLATE - FEBRUARY 2023
A bit late but here are all the updates from the new DC Chapter 1 announcement and what’s to come after the DCEU reset, which you can watch here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY8XcmrIujE
~~~General notes
-Last month the entire DCEU (DC Extended Universe, DC's live action movies) was announced for a reset (no more Gal Gadot Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill Superman, etc; there were a lot of changes you can look up)
-DC's CEOs are James Gunn and Peter Safran; Gunn (who worked on Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy") is the one heading the reset and rearranging of the DCEU
-Gunn states that DC has been disconnected from film/television/gaming/animation for a long time; he aims to connect them more and create character/actor casting consistency that works within one story (presumably the DCEU)
-Anything outside of this (Matt Reeves' “The Batman”, Todd Phillip’s “Joker”, "Teen Tians Go!", etc) will be clearly labeled as DC elseward (not part of the DCEU)
-Gunn and Safran have begun mapping an 8-10 year plan of DC's future projects; this first chapter is called "Gods and Monsters"
-There will be 4 projects coming out over the next year
~~~2023 Future Projects
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Gunn states Shazam has been in its own corner of the DCEU but will now connect directly into:
The Flash
The Flash will reset the entire DC universe
No mention of whether Ezra Miller will continue their role as Flash or not, though there is reports that Gunn and Safran are open to Miller's return
Blue Beetle
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Will lead directly into the Chapter 1 projects
~~~First Look at Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters (not the full slate)
Creature Commandos
Animated TV series
Gunn plans to have characters move in and out of animated works, hopefully voiced by the same actor who plays their live action counterpart (think if Jason Mamoa kept doing his live action Aquaman stuff, as well as voice acted in whatever animated/gaming works the Aquaman character appeared in)
Waller
Live action TV series
Story of Amanda Waller (the one who created the Suicide Squad; she's like DC's Nick Fury)
Waller will team up with members from the Peacemaker franchise
Will be played by Viola Davis; story created by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol)
Superman: Legacy
Film
Gunn says this will be "the true beginning of the DCU"
Written by James Gunn
Will release in theaters July 11, 2025
Lanterns
HBO live action TV series
Story of John Stewart and Hal Jordan (a few other Lanterns will be peppered in)
Terrestrial-based show (almost like "True Detective" according to Gunn) where Hal and John will act as space-cops watching over precinct Earth; they will discover a terrifying mystery that will tie into the largest story of the DCU
The Authority
Film
Based on the WildStorm characters, who will be brought into the DCU and interact with all the primary DCU characters
Group of heroes who think the world is broken, and will fix it by any means necessary
Gunn's passion project that's a "different look at superheroes"
Paradise Lost
Live action TV series
Story of Paradise Island/Themyscira, the birthplace of Wonder Woman
"Like Game of Thrones with Westeros, but with the inhabitants of Paradise Island"
The Brave and the Bold
Film
Introduction to the DCU's Batman
Story of Batman and Damian al Ghul, based on Grant Morrison's comic run
Damian is an assassin and Bruce Wayne's biological son, who he tries to get in line; this is the story of them and "the beginning of the Batfamily in the DCU"
Booster Gold
HBO live action TV series
Booster Gold is a "loser" from the future who uses future technology to become a present-day superhero to gain love and admiration
"The superhero story of imposter syndrome"
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
Film
Will turn Tom King's comic run (under the same name) into a "big science fiction epic"
Supergirl, unlike her cousin, was raised on a floating chunk of the destroyed planet Krypton after witnessing everyone around her perish; this film will explore her as a jaded character
Swamp Thing
Film
Very dark horror story about the origins of Swamp Thing
Will be outside of the DCU yet still feed into those stories
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Personal Opinions
-I was never invested much in the DCU, just never seemed as appealing to me as Marvel, but if I hear good reviews I'll give it another shot
-Very relieved to hear the non-DCU stuff is still happening since that's where my DC interests lie
-If "The Flash" resets the DCU its a must watch if you want to keep up after this point, but if Ezra Miller is in it I don't want to watch; that mf should literally be in prison why are they still not fired (they replaced Gal, Henry, possibly Jason, but NOT Ezra? Tf?)
-I don't know much about Blue Beetle but I've seen a lot of hype (I'm also a fan of Jaime Reyes, BB's protegee) so I'll probably check it out (cheers to the BB x Booster Gold shippers lmao happy for y'all)
-I love animated stuff and would love if more comic characters got attention instead of the same lineup we always get so I'll be keeping an eye out for Creature Commandos, the characters look cool (plus its animated). Speaking of underrated character getting a spotlight...
-I AM SO FUCKING HYPED FOR WALLER. She's a hardass recruiter like Nick Fury and Viola Davis is an acting god so I am very pleased to see her getting her own stuff (plus more Peacemaker crew! But if y'all overshadow this series about a plus sized black woman to focus on the white boys in Peacemaker I'm throwing you off a pier); its also got Watchmen and Doom Patrol people working on it omfg its gonna be so good I am vibrating rn
-another Superman movie, they better make it stand out (I heard it delves more into Supes exploring his Kryptonian heritage beyond the powers which will be interesting, especially considering he was originally a metaphor for immigration rights)
-LANTERNS. L A N T E R N S. JOHN STEWART MY FUCKING BELOVED HE'S BACK. no seriously growing up I adored the animated Justice League series and John and Shiera were my favorite part of it, I'm so happy to have John back (also don't know much about the Lantern Corps so it'll be fun for me to learn more); let it be known that if Shiera x John makes a comeback I will actually disintegrate and ascend into Themyscira. SpEAkiNg oF-
-no amount of capslock keyboard smashes can convey to you how much of a slut I am for Wonder Woman and the Amazonians. It simply cannot be done. Any excuse for more Amazons I will latch onto like orphans to Batman, I NEED THIS (plus new amazons maybe? more amazona? Hippolyta? Artemis?? Nubia? yARA-)
-Midnighter. Apollo. Midnighter and Apollo. I would scream but my dog is present (seriously I'm gonna be so annoying about them when this drops, I've waited YEARS for these two). As for the rest I'm not as familiar with them but similar sentiment to Commandos, I'm excited to learn about new characters
-as a batfam stan first and a person second, I'm always nervous about how DC will handle them. I'm hoping it won't just be Son of Batman in (presumably) live action (also side-eyeing Gunn for calling Damian "Batman's actual son" like the whole ass rest of the batfam ain't right there); I'm also wondering why they're completely skipping over all the other robins/batfam and going straight to the current one, some of the others are very underrated and deserve to have their origins expanded on (mainly Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, Duke Thomas and Tim Drake for on screen stuff); kind of a let down for me that there's no other news but can't say I'm surprised
-ok ngl the pitch for Booster Gold was strong and I am honestly invested (that last line was raw); rip BG stans he literally called your boy a loser im so sorry lmao (but lets be real that's exactly why you love him isn't it?)
-I'm used to a Kara that's very preppy and reactive so seeing her being jaded is gonna be interesting, I'm very excited and might honestly even check out Tom King's source material
-I know next to nothing of Swamp Thing so this'll be a nice way for me and others to get to know the character

How would you rate Marvel and DC's showings at SDCC?
Marvel was great. DC was terrible. I should be at the point now where I don't let that bother me as it's been the case ever since BvS, but damnit I'm not happy with the state of DC outside the Trinity.
Tumblr media
Running down the list for Marvel:
Comics - Obviously the big news is Hickman writing a "Sandman" for Marvel. My guess is it's either a Dr. Strange book, or a book focused on the Marvel Abstracts (Death, Order, Chaos, the Living Tribunal, etc). Of course I will be picking that up Day 1. Otherwise the Tradd Moore Dr. Strange book sounds interesting, I'm hopeful that the new F4 creative team will come out guns blazing, Aaron is finally off Avengers but we don't know what's next for him, there's going to be a "Cold War" Captain America event featuring Steve and Sam, Cantwell is leaving Iron Man with issue 25, and he's doing a Namor book and another book where Osborn will be a hero going by the moniker "Gold Goblin". Krakoa will last until 2024 at least which is when they might start entering the second act of Hickman's plan. None of the Spider-Man teases interested me.
Animation - Goddamn but that Spider-Man cartoon sure interests me! Gorgeous art style, finally a Marvel cartoon with an actual budget again. They say it's set in the MCU but that can't be true. You've got Norman and Otto showing up here which would outright contradict No Way Home, and Peter gets a classic costume. I assume this is set in the "MCU Multiverse" like the What-If series, on a different Earth. Can't wait to watch, would be nice if we could have great Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man cartoons all running simultaneously like the 90s again. Never seen the X-Men 90s cartoon but maybe I'll go watch that and check out the revival.
Film/TV - Aside from Spider-Man, Blade, and F4 I don't have any interest in the upcoming Marvel slate. Maybe I'll go see the Avengers movies but right now I'm scaling back. Hot damn did this show the confidence invested in Feige all the same, even coming off of the worst Marvel Phase yet he still is able to get people excited over a bunch of logos. That Wakanda Forever trailer was beautiful but I can't help feeling bitter over what it means for T'Challa.
Tumblr media
For DC
Comics - Williamson's big "reveal" only elicited eye rolls and groans from what I've seen. Nobody cares about infinite Earths when you can't even put out books featuring anyone but the Bats. Aside from two Static books and a YA Superman book, EVERYTHING else was Batman related. I get that DC likely wants to hold back on revealing what's coming in 2023 until we're deeper into Dark Crisis, but it's painful to see how small the DCU has shrunk compared to Marvel. They're not even trying right now.
Animation - The only interesting reveal was the 2023 DTV lineup of JL/RWYB, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham, Legion of Superheroes, and JL: Warworld. Only Legion and Warworld caught my eye, not a RWYB fan, and DtctG's main appeal is the Mignola art which I doubt they can afford to replicate. Other two seem to be the Tomorowverse movies, and both are likely going to star Superman in a lead role given Legion has his symbol in the promo and Warworld is self-explanatory. That takes the sting out of him not getting his own solo movie for his 85th at least. Ideally Legion would be an adaption of the Johns/Frank Superman & the Legion of Superheroes arc, and Warworld would be an adaption of PKJ's Warworld Saga, with the League replacing the Authority, but it's just as likely they will be original stories. Guess the rumors of a CoIE trilogy were false, no matter I'm not a huge fan of that story anyway. Edit: Looks like the Legion story is going to be Superman introducing Supergirl to the team, that could still be fun although I hope Clark is more involved than just passing her off to them and disappearing.
Film - Shazam 2 looks funny but I expect it to be another modest success. Black Adam looks cool but everyone was hoping the rumor Cavill would show up was true, and weren't happy when it didn't happen. Deadline wouldn't usually report "buzz" if there wasn't at least plausible cause but this time they looked like fools. Cavill and WB have been playing a game of chicken for five years and I'm tired of it. If you're seriously going to let the Rock put a post credit scene in BA that sets up a showdown with Superman, fucking get a Superman. Either give Cavill another solo movie like he wants or recast the role, because Cavill is not going to blink. Damn if WB doesn't look sad right now, can't even promote their 2023 movies because of the Miller and Heard controversies, never mind talking about the future.
DC got bodied this year. Speculation that they're saving reveals for Fandome feel far fetched to me given A. the likelihood that there are changes to the slate coming because of the restructure and Hamada's likely departure, and B. last year they announced a date for Fandome in April and it's almost August now. I don't think we'll get a Fandome this year because everyone is waiting for Zaslav to pick his new DC head and then they'll be the one to start greenlighting pitches. Five years since Snyder got kicked out and DC is still a mess. What a waste.

The elusive Canadian superhero
I personally feel one of the reasons why a homegrown superhero comics industry never or at least barely took off in big numbers in Canada partly has to do with America’s habit of mythologising itself that American characters like Captain America, Superman and Spider-Man take on a mythical nature that Canadian comics creators can dream of. Marvel has a habit of mythologising New York City but so does DC Comics with Gotham, which is also a nickname for the Big Apple. Superman fights for truth, justice and the American way but no such equivalent tagline exists for Captain Canuck, the Pitiful Human-Lizard simply comes from Toronto just as Kebec simply comes from Quebec. It might be possible for a superhero series to succeed in Canada, though I think it has to be tweaked somehow to better fit Canadian sensibilities which is something some Canadian superhero writers have attempted before. But even then it seems Canadian superheroes, especially in their purest form, will always have difficulty taking off in Canada.
Canadian culture may entertain the idea of a superhero, but having a superhero story in practise is harder to pull off let alone a superhero story that’s firmly within the superhero genre. I remember somewhere at the Speculating Canada website that whenever Canadians do superhero stories, especially involving Canadian superheroes at all, they often push genre boundaries as to figure out a way to make the superhero genre fit Canadian sensibilities. Perhaps the Canadian superhero series that succeeded the most is the satirical Angloman, done by the authors of Northguard. Like I said, it pokes fun at Canada a lot whereas whenever Americans write American superheroes, they tend to be reverential of their country.
It’s not that Canadian superhero stories are impossible, but that it’s hard for them to take off in any way without at least some of them not fitting the superhero genre template to a T. Supposing if I were to work on a Canadian superhero mobile game where all the superheroes are detectives and police officers, it would also be another way to make the superhero genre fit Canadian sensibilities albeit in a different direction. It is possible for a Canadian superhero story to succeed, but if Angloman’s any indication its best chance of succeeding would be to take superheroes to a new and rarely done direction. It needn’t to be satire to succeed, since one could do the same with a stronger crime fiction influence.
But doing straight-up superheroes isn’t Canada’s forte, that’s something a few countries ever do let alone frequently so. The only countries that frequently publish superhero stories a lot and enough to justify a whole industry with are America and Indonesia, though there are others that I never brought up in any way. Canada isn’t one of them and even if it finally does these days, I don’t think Captain Canuck has the same iconic stature as Superman despite being a nationalistic hero. Even when people try to treat superheroes as if they’re ordinary people, they’re also built on iconic symbolism that they are icons themselves. When coupled with America’s habit of mythologising itself, that it shouldn’t come as a surprise that superheroes took off well there.
A good number of American superheroes aren’t just nationally recognised characters, they are also internationally renowned and something any Canadian superhero writer would undoubtedly envy. It’s pretty telling that Canada’s internationally renowned characters like Anne Shirley and Franklin the Turtle are outside of the superhero genre altogether, while Captain Canuck does have some fame he’s not exactly as well-known to many people outside of Canada the way even Caillou is, and that says a lot about why the superhero genre never took off big time there. Not as much as Canadian superhero writers would’ve hoped for, not to mention Angloman has difficulty getting collected.
A straight up superhero story is something many Canadians have tried, but could also never quite pull it off the way their southern neighbours do. While superheroes were there in Canadian comics before, the earlier ones never had the same staying power as Wonder Woman and Superman do. Especially Nelvana, who’s even the first superheroine in comics ever. There’s something about the superhero that Canadians like but could never localise for Canadian tastes even if they come close to succeeding. It’s something that will always be their white whale.

Deconstructing Action Comics #775
2023 has been an exciting year for Superman fans. This was the year saw the release of 'My Adventures with Superman', and while that series received the usual complaints from the die-hard comic purists and DCEU fans, it was otherwise very warmly received by the general public. On the comic side of things we have had excellent writers like Mark Waid, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Gene Luen Yang and Joshua Williamson working on the Superman books and the results have been fairly positive. And on the movie side of things, we received word that James Gunn is working on a brand new Superman movie called "Superman: Legacy", which is slated to come out in 2025. Considering that the last time that we got a standalone Superman movie was in 2013 - more than a decade ago at this point - this is pretty big news. Naturally, Superman fans have been grasping for any new bit of information that might tell us what the movie might look like. So far we know that the actors who are going to be playing the main characters are David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois Lane respectively. We know that the movie is going to be about Superman balancing his human upbringing with his alien upbringing. And we also know that the movie is going to involve other superheroes. For a while, there was a rumor that the movie was going to involve Superman going up against the Authority, a team of anti-heroic superheroes that were originally part of the DC Comics Wildstorm imprint. However, those rumors appear to be somewhat untrue, as seen in the recent casting details which confirm that the characters Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, Metamorpho and Mr Terrific are going to be part of the movie - all characters who have no real connection to the Authority.
When I first heard those rumors, I was...not happy. In general I dislike the idea of Superman having to share screentime with other superheroes in his own movie, and I would have preferred it if Superman Legacy was just a standalone movie. However, the thing that concerned me the most was the supposed source of inspiration for this movie. When these original rumors were flying around, there seemed to be a strong indication that Superman Legacy was going to be a loose adaptation of the Action Comics #775 story "What's so funny about Truth, Justice and the American Way", which was later adapted into a DC Animated movie, "Superman vs the Elite".
Tumblr media
I do NOT like this story. As a matter of fact, I think that its a terrible Superman story and that the creators behind the movie would have been extremely misguided if they decided to make an adaptation of it. That is a very unpopular opinion, by the way, as Action Comics #775 is highly regarded by many Superman fans. So, I wanted to discuss the original story, and explain why I dislike it so much.
Firstly, let's get some context out of the way. Action Comics #775 was meant to be a direct response to the comic series "The Authority". The Authority was a popular comic series that was notable for being a much darker and edgier take on superheroes. The protagonists of " The Authority" were fundamentally anti-heroic and had a habit of solving their problems through hyper-violence and other extreme methods. At least, that is the impression I get from second hand sources. I freely admit that I have not read the Authority comic but I don't think that's going to be too much of an issues when it comes to my discussion of Action Comics #775.
The success of The Authority raised the question : is Superman and his traditional brand of heroics still relevant in the modern age ? Action Comics #775 is meant to address that question by creating a pastiche of The Authority in "The Elite", a fictional group of super-powered anti-heroes led by Manchester Black.
Tumblr media
When the story begins, Superman learns of The Elite when he comes across the dead bodies of the supervillains they have killed. Since Superman has a code against killing, he is naturally opposed to their destructive methods. However, the in-universe public disagree with him, with some people championing the Elite while at the same time calling out Superman's no-kill policy for being 'outdated'.
Tumblr media
So yeah, this story isn't very subtle when it comes to addressing the real life criticisms that people have of the character.
Eventually Superman gets into a proper confrontation with the Elite, and it is at this point that The Elite inform Superman about the big Problem at the heart of the story. The Problem is as follows : Superman's methods of dealing with supervillains were proving to be ineffectual. He has a habit of simply carting them off to prison after defeating them. Inevitably, those same supervillains simply break out of prison only to cause more damage and destruction, before being stopped by Superman again.
Essentially, by refusing to kill his enemies, Superman is causing more harm than good by perpetuating a cycle of violence. The Elite claim to be a solution to The Problem. They are more than willing to kill their enemies and using extreme methods such as punishing the families of those enemies to keep them in line.
Now, we as the readers are not meant to sympathize with the Elite. The story goes out of it's way to depict the Elite as a bunch of pompous, politically incorrect, egotistical assholes. However, one can't help but think that perhaps...the Elite might have a good point ? Now, let's be clear, I do not want to see Superman killing his enemies. I like it when Superman is above such things. I like it when Superman tries to solve problems without resorting to those easy solutions. On the other hand, there are obvious consequences to the no-kill policy as described in the Problem above.
What is Superman's response to the Problem ? If he doesn't want to kill his enemies, does he have any other solution that would break that cycle of violence that he is unintentionally perpetuating?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, apparently the answer is no. The story simply has Superman proclaiming that he is going to continue doing the same thing that he has always done, and hoping that eventually things will work out. Let's not pull any punches, that is a WEAK argument, but the story never really seems to realize that.
And THAT is the fundamental problem with this story. We're meant to see the Elite as being in the wrong for their extreme methods and they are, but at the same time, Superman himself doesn't exactly have the best argument in favor of his own methods. As a matter of fact, the story simply doubles down on that weak argument as seen in the ending of the story.
Tumblr media
This speech is often championed by Superman fans as the one scene that summarizes everything great about Superman. I say that it is the best encapsulation of the problem with this story. In recent times, more and more people are making thinkpieces that criticize MCU superheroes or just superheroes in general for perpetuating the status quo within their various stories. And yet, those very people will praise this story which ends with Superman directly and proudly stating his intentions to continue to be a protector of the status quo. It's the ultimate cop-out ending, and the big Problem that is raised in the story is ultimately unaddressed.
The story has a bunch of other problems, namely in how the Elite are essentially just a bunch of strawmen (something that seems rather childish for a story that is trying to be complex and mature), or how seemingly and fundamentally insecure the story is about Superman as a character, especially with how it incorporates real life arguments that people have had about him. I could point out that the best way to show that Superman is still relevant in the modern age is by simply telling good Superman stories, rather than doing the story equivalent of jumping up and down and screaming "He's still relevant ! He's still relevant !". But ultimately, the failure of the story to address the Problem is my biggest gripe.
Now, you may be wondering what I thought of the animated adaptation of this story. Does it fix any of the problems I described ?
Tumblr media
Unfortunately the answer is no. The movie does a good job expanding the original story and fleshing out the backstories of the antagonists. But since it's still using the original story as a base, it ends up having the same problems. The way I see it, it is a very good adaptation of a very flawed Superman story.
And that's why I balked at the idea of James Gunn taking inspiration from this story for his big Superman movie. Simply put, it wouldn't have made for a good Superman movie unless Gunn significantly reworked the story.
Off Course, there are plenty of other better Superman stories that tackles similar themes. 'Superman : Peace On Earth', 'Superman: Camelot Falls', 'Superman and the Authority' and 'Superman Adventures: The War Within' are all good stories that put Superman's values and morals under question and do so in a much more graceful and tactful manner. None of those stories are perfect, but they're at least better than Action Comics #775. For all the reasons I laid out above, that story just doesn't work for me.

the new dc slate looks amazing wym? dont assume its gonna be bad, give it a chance! one thing about gunn is he actually likes comics so i think theres hope here.
It's just my opinion, I mean I'll go through each thing and say what my feelings are on it. And tbh I'm not so assuming it'll be bad so much as I think most of it is just not things I'll enjoy. That's why I used the word underwhelming.
Also there is literally never gonna be a day I'm happy about Gunn being in charge at DC, you can try and convince me all you want, but it's never gonna happen. I'm sure for some people him there is a dream come true, for me it's a nightmare.
So to explain in more detail my feelings about each item on the slate...
Creature Commandos - Just not interested in this, won't watch it.
Waller - Love to hear Viola Davis is sticking around. I'll probably at the very least check this out. Not thrilled to hear it's being billed as a spin-off of Peacemaker though, since I didn't like that show.
Superman: Legacy - Hearing Gunn is writing this and may direct is enough to kill any interest I could have had in this.
Lanterns - First thing I'm actually excited for. I'll DEFINITELY tune into this. Hearing that Greg Berlanti is no longer attached and it's now gonna include John Stewart is great news to me.
The Authority - I have essentially no opinion on any of the characters and so I'm not particularly excited by this.
Paradise Lost - This is an interesting concept but it doesn't get me excited. Idk why because I think a show about the Amazons is a great idea. Maybe I'll get more excited about this as more details get released.
The Brave and the Bold - I'm...intrigued by this. The good is that we're gonna have a Robin right off the bat and that it's being billed as a "father-and-son story". The bad, the rest of the description does not exactly inspire confidence, and I absolutely despise the Morrison era of Batman comics. I can't imagine a world where I don't go see this though.
The Batman sequel - Very excited for this, I'll be there opening night.
Booster Gold - I've got nothing against Booster Gold, but do I really want to watch a whole show centered around him??
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow: "Taking its cues from the recent Tom King-written miniseries" No thank you!
Swamp Thing: I'll keep it real this could be the greatest film ever made and I'll never know because I'm a little baby who can't handle horror scarier than The Haunted Mansion (2003)

Warworld Saga Ending in August 2022
Tumblr media
Oh, and possibly major spoilers from here on out.
Kal-El is coming home. DC Comics has announced the conclusion of the Warworld Saga is on the horizon. After the end of the Warworld Saga Superman will then return to Earth (guess he wins?) for a 6-part crossover in the pages of Action Comics and Superman: Son of Kal-El leading up to Action Comics #1050.
The ending of the Worldworld Saga will feature battles between Superman and Mongul and between the Authority and Mongul’s Unmade Champions in Superman: Warworld Apocalypse #1 - a one-shot from writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artists Brandon Peterson and Will Conrad. Plus, who really is the mastermind lurking in the shadows?
Superman: Warworld Apocalypse #1, featuring a main cover by Steve Beach, a variant cover by Mario “Fox” Foccillo, a 1:25 foil variant cover by Mikel Janín, and a distressed variant cover by Steve Beach, will go on sale on August 30, 2022.
Tumblr media
Superman will then return to Earth following the events of Superman: Warworld Apocalypse #1. The 6-part crossover, “Kal-El Returns.” Kal-El Returns takes place in Action Comics #1047-#1049 and in Superman: Son of Kal-El #16-18 from writer Tom Taylor. Superman is back with new allies. However, with the fall of Warworld Lex Luthor sees great opportunity. Lex’s plans will revolve around Metallo. Also, Kal-El seems to have awakened a powerful ancient enemy.
Action Comics #1047: Kal-El Returns, featuring a main cover by Steve Beach, a variant cover by Nathan Szerdy, a 1:25 variant cover by Lucio Parrillo, and a Harley Quinn 30th Anniversary variant by Leirix, goes on sale September 27, 2022.
