Hey! Sorry to bother you, I've been wondering, what do you use to get such crisp/clear close-up photos/videos?
Tumblr media
these clip on macro lenses and my phone!
updated from this, since I was gifted these two lenses which are slightly better than my old one (they’re relatively cheap online, from 20-40 USD and pair well with most smartphones).
I might actually be taking the leap into actual macrophotography soon tho so stay tuned!

Hi there! Thank you for your kind words and for using Google to translate your comments to Swedish. I'll answer you in English though, as Google can be a bit untrustworthy from time to time (as is my English, but never mind).
Please know that I don't expect anyone to support me via Ko-fi, so don't feel bad about it. I'm just glad you are enjoying my pictures. As for which camera I use, I re-use my standard answer, as this is a question I get quite often. Here goes:
My go-to camera, especially during summer, is a Canon Eos 80D. I also have a Canon 6D Mark II which I tend to use more during winter and dark/cloudy/rainy days. As for lenses, I use a zoom 100-400 mm (Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM), but I also frequently use a 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens for flowers, plants and insects. These are cameras and lenses I’ve used many years, and I know them very well. As with family, I tend to argue with them from time to time (“focus!”, “no, it’s NOT too dark!”, “why don’t you learn to communicate like a normal person?!” etcetera), but I always love them no matter what.
I also use my iPhone from time to time, especially when I’m scouting an area or when I simply don’t have access to my system camera. I’m thinking of trying out old fashioned analogue cameras as well, but I haven’t got around to that yet (not to mention that I can’t afford it at the moment). Oh, and I remember my first camera, an old Polaroid, with much love, but that camera is long gone.
So there you go. "IS" in the zoom lens name above stands for "image stabilisation", which paired with shutter speed settings makes the bird pictures sharp. But you should know that I take many, many pictures that are far from sharp - pictures you will never see...
Thanks again for contacting me. Have a wonderful day!

🤩 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: @huehughes Hello everyone! It's time to direct the spotlight toward our community members, and today we will get to know better Hue Hughes!
Tumblr media
"My name is Hue Hughes. I am a video editor and vfx artist living in coastal South Carolina. The inspiration behind this photo is creating a practical image that had action and tension. Shooting outdoors is something I very rarely do but it is how I got started.
Tumblr media
I begin taking my very first toy photographs in 2017. It all started when I purchased a camera and macro lens. I started shooting my sons diverse collection of robots, space ships and superheroes.
Tumblr media
It was a short time later I found a unique connection with LEGO®. Its simplistic design, scale, detail and bright color palette of this toy lent itself very well to toy photography. So well in fact, I bought a few more lens and enough LEGO® sets to start a small toy store and never looked back.
Tumblr media
I believe every great story has a beginning, middle and end. This same philosophy also holds true for a good photograph. The image must tell a compelling story that catches the viewers attention and resonates some form of a response - a memory, excitement, joy or just a simple thought from your childhood.
Tumblr media
Every image of mine is a window into another world and it’s that window we gaze upon to find a great toy story. Whether it’s throwing baking powder to simulate a winter blizzard on a mountainside or a fire cracker that showers a scene with sparks to mimic an explosion, I like creating all of my effects in camera and practically.
Tumblr media
I build my own sets and create my own effects by hand using common household materials and old filmmaking techniques. This style of artisan photography adds an element of realism, personality and craftsmanship to a photo which forms a tighter bond between the viewer and the image.
Tumblr media
I am a stronger believer that gear does not make a great shot. It helps but as an artist your equipment should help you achieve your style. My camera is a Canon 7d. I pair this body with either a EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 or EF 85mm f/1.8 usm. A single Litepanels Caliber Fresnel is my go-to for lighting. The final element is a fog machine that when combined with the Fresnel creates rich, dreamy photography."

Thank you for accepting our invitation and let the community knows you better!

Skip and Loafer Episode 4: Tingling and Scraping
Tumblr media
P.A Works and Skip and Loafer are doing it again, and again, and again. They continue to deliver interesting and unique direction and visuals that pile on a delightfully warm sense of comedy and friendship, and is complemented by thoughtful commentary and exploration of the most challenging aspects of being a high schooler. Today, that topic is regrets and expectations.
But who wants to start with the heavy stuff first, I like the cute and fluffy pieces too! Thanks to this episode's direction though, we get a lot of very beautiful scenery. There's a really strong focus that almost separates environment from characters, and lets you soak both up in copious amounts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's just so damn beautiful, but the characters can do a good job of distracting you from it. Take, for example, the use of CGI vehicles in the following scene. Unless you're looking at them they don't do anything other than populate the scenery, they just blend in so well with the lighting and color palette. To that end, I feel like P.A Works' use of CGI throughout the series so far has been really well managed. It fills up the layouts and adds life to the background of it all, but isn't enough where you're forced to look at it.
Tumblr media
Anyways, moving on, the overall direction. I like it, it walks a fine line, but I like it. It's an episode that focuses far more on the internal pieces of characters so you get a good few close ups, but they do a good job of molding those pieces so that they fit within a "first person" perspective. It's very hard to explain, but basically the way they frame and block characters within a scene is to have viewers look through the eyes of a character, instead of the lens of a camera. It's a subtle piece, and I feel like they could do it better in some other areas, but there's quite a few pieces that stand out and really sell that first person feel.
Just simple things, like this scene of Mitsumi watching the old TV Drama that Shima-Kun acted in. The FoV is more stretched and there's the slightest visual effects to make sure viewers understand they're looking at a screen.
Tumblr media
Or scenes like these pairs place us directly behind a character's line of sight (second image is a follow up cut that shows the pair in a single scene).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stuff like this shows the strong awareness of today's episode director. Without these follow-up scenes, the direction (even though the initial scenes are still creative) can come off as typical or "standard", but the concept of that first person perspective is framed by seeing just how you saw the previous scenes. Really great work that's apparent through the episode.
Speaking of apparent through the episode, the comedy! I love that Takamatsu-sensei found a vehicle for their (non-deprecating) humor and ran with it. The adaptability of space, and its relation to Mitsumi is really felt in this episode. Thanks to that, I've got a newfound appreciation for the comedy and the sort of daydreaming aspect. It's so fluid and creative, and no matter what it finds its roots with Mitsumi which is really nice.
And just to round it out, the technical work on the speeds and movement of the background layers in this cut is so well done. Such a great mimicry of how it actually looks.
Tumblr media
Alright, onto the story now! It's really lovely. I appreciate how it tackles the issues so much. It refuses to look at them as an issue that faces a single character, or one that characters can share, and instead brings the sentiment to a more macro scale and portrays it as something that every high school student deals with.
Shima-Kun has regrets, Mitsumi has regrets, Takamine has regrets, even characters like Kanechika are faced with regret and its challenges. And that's what this episode ends up all about, facing those expectations and staring down regret and what you might regret later down the road.
Tumblr media
I feel like the above image really puts the whole episode into context quite well. What does it mean to have no regrets? When will you know if you'll regret something in the moment? They're questions without answers, and the curiosity possessed by the teenagers within the series does well to really sell it.
They don't have a real answer to it, nor can they quite put it into words, but instead they can experience it. They can understand how to live without regrets and how to find happiness in every corner in life. Like this scene of Takamine as she looks out the window of the bus
. She's regretting her decisions, she's beating herself up for losing and wasting time. But one little moment with Mitsumi wipes it all away, because the view was worth it. Such a simple thing as a landscape was enough to ease Takamine, and I think it's great. It's not the big moments that make that difference, it's the little ones you might not otherwise experience.
Tumblr media
And god do I love how Takamine and Mitsumi are played off each other. They exist as polar opposites in the most important moments, and show how impactful each is on the other to strike a balance between the two lifestyles. Stuff like Takamine studying while Mitsumi eats candy and watches the scenery go by, just really simple pieces that establish that fundamental rift between the personalities of the two.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Surprisingly, something this simple is actually an incredibly important piece of symbolism that ties to an earlier conversation that Mitsumi had with Shima-Kun. Mitsumi used to have expectations and regrets weigh incredibly heavy on her, so bad that it was to the point that she wasn't eating while studying for exams. But one person was able to help carry that weight and let Mitsumi be free.
That's what's happening with Takamine and Mitsumi, an implicit conversation telling Takamine that it's okay to betray expectations and have regrets. That you can fail and not get into the middle school of your choice and still have a wonderful life. It's a really wonderful piece for reassuring people with their whole life ahead of them that they have just that. There's no rush to fill your schedule and do everything possible every waking moment to make sure you get to where you're going. It's all about the journey, or in this case, the bus ride.
And just to top it all off, Takamine really changes quite quickly. What's best about it though is that they show it as a subconscious change before they express it as a thought. They used to have nightmares about being left behind by the bus, but that gets replaced with a wonderful little dream sequence that takes Takamine through the stars.
Tumblr media
It's just so... good. It does everything right and wonderful and bubbly and cute and sweet. It takes Takamine's desires and feelings as a high school girl and lays them bare to the viewer in what amounts to a fluff sequence.
And why you might ask? Well, like I said earlier it's a subconscious piece of Takamine, so there's lots of things within it. Take the cat, an amalgamation of the cat Mitsumi picked up earlier and Mitsumi herself. And then there's the idea of looking out the window of the bus at the scenery, and within that there's even paralells/similarities to how Takamine saw Mitsumi when she was looking out the bus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay I promise to tie it off here. After her experience in her dream, we see her cutely mistake Mitsumi for the dream cat, before she follows it up with expressing to Mitsumi that she's not the girl that she thinks Mitsumi thinks she is. I think. But yeah, it's a great little scene that shows the confidence Takamine finds in herself from yesterday's experience to face today head on, and create a deeper relationship with Mitsumi in the process.
Even though we're already this far along I feel like there's a world of things to take in. Like how Shima-Kun speaks to expectations and how family bearing down on you can squash happiness and passion as you strive to live up to expectations and earn their affection. Or how thoughtful Mitsumi tries to be at times like not bringing up Shima-Kun's acting career to him. Or how Mitsumi's come to Tokyo to try and change a foundational issue with rural underpopulation in Japan (really, it's a pretty severe issue these days). It's such a diverse and deep story that you can hardly fit all of the good parts into one post. But you can summarize it with a single sentence.
Skip and Loafer continues to prove that it has incredible understanding and nuance in regards to high school life and how it affects students, depicting a wonderfully romanticized story that continues to stay close to the ground and provide important commentary and messages to viewers.
Though I guess that's more like a paragraph, isn't it?

Was exceptionally lucky to both be invited to and able to attend the Seattle @renegadepublishing meetup shortly after Christmas! Always a joy to put faces to names, to see the movements and expressions that fill those gaps between bouts of speaking, to get my grubby paws and macro lens on them precious, precious books!

Took so many photos, they will cover the next couple Mondays. Sadly I did a poor job tracking who's was what, so please enjoy works that are not my own and keep an eye out on the #bookbinding tag to see if you can pair them up with posted final products ;)

Unfortunately (for my wallet) recently got the analog bug, bought a Nikon FE off ebay… Luckily I own exactly 1 F Mount lens still capable of full manual operation, the Tokina ATX Pro 100 mm F2.8 Macro. Paired with Kodak Ultramax 400 filmstock, this is how the first outing turned out (Part 1)

26/09/23-Thursley
Flora and fauna photos in this set are of: 1. A majestic Hobby it was a true joy to see gliding through the blue sky early on in the amazing time we spent here today. A quintessential bird of this habitat teeming with their famous prey dragonflies, I felt so honoured to get such fine and spectacular views of this beautiful bird I adore as I watched it swoop and noticed from this photo I was pleased to get of it that it has prey in its talons. 2. A Common Lizard, I believe the first of any I'd seen this year there were loads basking in the sun on the boardwalk today, big and small, it was enthralling to see these sparkling reptiles. 3. One of a few Red Kites it was great to see today too, seeing one circle overhead closely and fly over the bright blue water. 4. A stunning Black Darter, I am so pleased that we saw these today as it was the main thing I wanted to see here. It's a special sighting as my first of the year and first of the species I'd seen for two years as it takes my dragonfly and damselfly year list to 21 making it my highest ever. That means in 2023 all five of the year lists I keep (this one, birds, butterflies, moths and mammals) are my highest ever which is something I'm so thrilled about and underlines the incredible year I'm having for watching wildlife with so much seen. This has always been the main place for us for this species and today you couldn't move for them in parts of the board walk, it was amazing to see so many and get striking intimate views of them with some staying put long enough for a photo with my macro lens unusually for dragonflies. 5. Some bog asphodel I enjoyed seeing. 6. Some smashing round-leaved sundew it was a treat to see. 7. Emerald Damselfly, a star damselfly of my day, week and year. 8. Common Darter another seen so well today again this year, it was lovely to see these and the Black Darters mating and egg laying. 9. One of a few Stonechats it was nice to see. 10. Harvestman spider.
In a raptor fest other great birds of prey seen were Kestrel and Buzzard, and sensational views of singing Woodlarks including in the air and Dartford Warbler seen were two more Thursley specialties we enjoyed seeing. Jay, a few Carrion Crows, Jackdaw, Magpie, Pied Wagtail, a fair few House Martins, flocks of Meadow Pipits and Goldfinches, Siskin, Linnet, Mallard, a great pair of Little Grebes and Green Woodpecker heard were other bird highlights today. Red Admiral, Small Copper, Common Blue Damselfly, Migrant and Southern Hawker, grasshopper probable Meadow Grasshopper, Box Tree moth, hornet, a red ant and beautiful Fox moth caterpillars were other notable insects seen today. Other standout plants seen were of course heather with some still looking nice and purple I believe we saw bell and common heather and cross-leaved heath, gorse, rosebay willowherb, tormentil, devil's-bit scabious, cotton grass and hawksbeard/ox tongue.

I went to the zoo this morning with my new camera! My mom gave me her canon rebel t3 with a macro lens. I still got some learning with it, but it was also freezing and I could only manipulate the buttons so much with two pairs of gloves on.

Motorola's Edge 50 Phones Make their Debut
Tumblr media
Motorola recently announced the launch of its latest batch of premium smartphones under its Edge branding, the Motorola Edge 50 series. The phones pack some lovely features for varying price segments, although they come with new tricks, such as Motorola's "Moto AI," which gives users access to GenAI tools from their handset. With that being said, let's take a look at the new devices. Motorola Edge 50 Pro First Look https://youtu.be/KAYSMy-xFF8 Motorola Edge 50 Ultra First is the most premium of the bunch, the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra. The phone packs a massive 6.7-inch Super HD+ (2712 x 1220) pOLED display with a super smooth 144Hz refresh rate, which is wrapped inside a chassis that features an IP68 water resistance rating, in addition to a sandblasted aluminium frame, and a back crafted from vegan leather and real wood. It comes in a variety of stylish colour options, including Forest Grey (Vegan Leather), Nordic Wood (Wood), and Peach Fuzz (Vegan Leather). As for performance, the handset runs on the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 Mobile Platform, which runs with up to 16GB of RAM alongside a maximum 1TB storage configuration. Powering the Edge 50 Ultra is a decent-sized 4500 mAh battery that also supports 125W fast-charging speeds, up to 50W wireless charging and 10W wireless power sharing. For imaging, the handset comes with a versatile triple-camera system on the back. It is headlined by a powerful 50MP main sensor with a large 1/1.3" optical format and OIS, accompanied by a 50MP ultrawide sensor with macro vision capabilities and a 64MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. There's also a front-facing camera with a 50MP sensor for high-quality selfies and video calls. Motorola Edge 50 Pro Up next is the Motorola Edge 50 Pro, which slots just below the Edge 50 Ultra - this is most evident with the phone's chipset, the decidedly midrange Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. It also tones down the RAM and storage configuration a bit, going down to 12GB and 512GB, respectively. Interestingly, it packs a very similar display configuration with the same 6.7-inch screen size and resolution and is available in Black Beauty (Vegan Leather), Luxe Lavender (Vegan Leather), and a special edition Moonlight Pearl. Notably, Japan will receive a Vanilla Cream (Vegan Leather) option. Things are a bit different when it comes to cameras, though—the Edge 50 Pro packs a triple-camera system with a 50MP primary sensor, a 13MP ultrawide sensor with macro vision capabilities, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom; the front-facing camera also has a 50MP resolution. As with the Ultra, it also comes with a 4500 mAh capacity battery with 125W charging speeds. Motorola Edge 50 Fusion The third phone in the bunch, the Edge 50 Fusion, takes the chip configuration one step lower with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 processor, with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. This time, though, the Edge 50 Fusion has a larger 5,000 mAh battery inside. On the front is a 6.7-inch pOLED display, which packs a curved-edge panel. As a more affordable phone, the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion ditches the triple-array camera instead of a dual-camera system on the back. This includes a 50MP primary sensor and a secondary 13MP ultra-wide sensor with macro vision, complemented by a front-facing 32MP camera. The phone is available in Forest Blue with a PMMA back, Hot Pink with a luxurious Vegan Suede finish, and Marshmallow Blue with a stylish Vegan Leather back. Pricing and Availability Motorola is launching new phones across select EMEA countries, including the UK. The top-of-the-line Edge 50 Ultra will be available from mid-May for £849 and comes with a launch promotion that includes a free pair of Moto buds+ worth £129. The mid-range Edge 50 Pro will be available earlier, starting April 16th, for £599 and will also include free Moto buds+ with purchase. The budget-friendly Edge 50 Fusion will arrive in mid-May for £349 and comes with a free pair of standard Moto buds worth £49. Read the full article
