a promised land, barack obama
released 2020
read: 07 july 2023 – 14 august 2023
this was a whole lotta book to get through and half the reason i never finished any books in july! In fact, i'm out of practice writing reviews, so i'll keep this one brief. a promised land was everything i love about biographies; it was honest, revealing, and showed me a new perspective of something i thought i already knew. a lot of what was discussed in the book is events that i studied closely many years ago when i was studying government & politics while obama was in office. however, it was like seeing events in a whole new light hearing from the man himself who revealed disputes, conflicts of interest, and difficult decisions going on behind the scenes that i hadn't realised a president may have to go through. i also think his writing style has become far more digestible than it was in dreams from my father, and so despite the fact that this is a hefty book, it's easy to get through and remain engaged.

I tried to make this picture the most millennial picture possible with avocado toast, Obama, and mugs about cats.

by: Barack Obama Published: Nov 17, 2020 Genre: Biography, Nonfiction 768 Pages, AudioBook by Audible (HH:MM) 29:10
★★★★
GoodReads Synopsis:
A riveting, deeply personal account of history in the making, from the president who inspired us to believe in the power of democracy.
In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency—a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil.
Obama takes readers on a compelling journey from his earliest political aspirations to the pivotal Iowa caucus victory that demonstrated the power of grassroots activism to the watershed night of November 4, 2008, when he was elected 44th president of the United States, becoming the first African American to hold the nation’s highest office.
My Review:
It’s a loooooong read, and took me 2 months to finish. There is a lot of insight and backstory to his early years as 44 but also, a huge information dump of things that weren’t interesting at all (to me). However, I like his candor and the fact that he name drops everyone and anyone who has ever helped him, met him, walked past him on the street - this man knew everyone’s FULL NAME and occupation. That really shows his character and blew me away.
If you have time. Read it.

Have you read both A Promised Land by Barack Obama and Becoming by Michelle Obama? I listened to Michelle Obama's book as an audio book. Barack's book I read as a mix of print and audio.

There's something so beautiful about Red Dwarf just as a concept and as a series.
Comedy aside, it has one of the most meaningful messages I think I've ever seen. The whole idea of being hopelessly lost and alone in the infinity of space but still having hope and love is just unbelievable. Dave Lister is just the ultimate guy ever.
He's a loser, a nobody, a complete write-off in terms of his career, a depressed, lonely man who is the last of his species, the only one left, three million years away from home.
Yet he still has hope. He still appreciates beauty in the rockiest places. He still believes in justice and life above all else, so much so that his worst fear is losing his morality. He still goes on.
He's so far away from home that there's no realistic hope of getting back, but he doesn't care. He makes a home out of everything and everyone around him, eternally living in the only way -the best way- he can.
He's created his own Promised Land.

More people need to watch Mads Mikkelsen's Danish films.
I'm an avid film enthusiast and also very picky about the films I watch. Then hannibal happened and the rest is history...( now you'd catch me watching Ads on YouTube cause it has Mads's shadow in it lol. Karma)
Once I fell in love with Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy I decided to watch most of their existing individual projects and I started of with Mads and HOLY SHIT!?!
Now I've always known that Mads Mikkelsen is a tremendously good actor but what I didn't expect is to fall in love with Danish films :").
I've absolutely loved:
- Another Round. (I'VE NEVER SEEN A MORE BEAUTIFUL ENDING SEQUENCE OF A MOVIE. I Can't-)
-The promised land. (IT'S REALLY GOOD)
- Adam's Apple. (Unexpectedly beautiful. Personal fav)
-Flickering Lights. (Heartwarming watch)
-Men and Chicken. (ELIAS IS A BABY)
-Riders of Justice (Heartwarming watch + DADDY MADS DADDY MADS)
So far and I'm planning on watching ALL of his films eventually! He's such a versatile actor 👏! HIS DANISH FILMS DESERVE MORE RECOGNITION Y'ALL!
