“This is the famous HOPI model from Sproul Homes. It’s a classic design by famed Mid Century Modern architect A. Quincy Jones.”

The years passed quickly, and in no time at all the triplets were turning 6 years old and starting school. Heather and Jenny threw a big birthday party for their trio to celebrate their huge milestone. They could hardly believe that their once-so-tiny babies were so grown up.

MHA House, 1947, A Quincy Jones, Jim Charlton
MHA: SITE OFFICE (2019)
Four friends, returning from WWII, pooled their money and bought an acre of land. They hired a pre-Eichler A Quincy Jones, along with Whitney R. Smith, and engineer Edgardo Contin, and built four homes. The group formed the non profit Mutual Housing Association, and through this many more homes were then built in the area, several by renowned mid century architects.
This video takes us on a short tour of MHA's site office and studio, which was converted to a residence in 1956, and more recently restored by architect-owner Cory Buckner. The site was planned so that the houses sat on its corners, at angles to the street and each other, with a central communal pool and play area, which diminishes the sense of internal boundaries, and allows uninterrupted views of the greenery.

Today In History
An impresario in the broadest and most creative sense of the word, Quincy Jones’ career has encompassed the roles of composer, record producer, artist, film producer, arranger, conductor, instrumentalist, television producer, record company executive, magazine founder and multi-media entrepreneur. As a master inventor of musical hybrids, he has shuffled pop, soul, hip-hop, jazz, classical, African and Brazilian music into many dazzling fusions, traversing virtually every medium, including records, live performance, movies and television.
Quincy Jones was born on March 14, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, and brought up in Seattle, Washington. His musical studies at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, afforded him the opportunity to tour with Lionel Hampton’s band as a trumpeter, arranger and sometime-pianist.
He moved to New York in 1951, where his reputation as an arranger grew. By the mid-1950s, he was arranging and recording for such diverse artists as Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Dinah Washington.
Celebrating more than fifty years performing and being involved in music, Jones’ creative magic has spanned over six decades, beginning with the music of the post-swing era and continuing through today’s high-technology, international multi-media hybrids.
Jones has 28 Grammys, including a Grammy Legend Award in 1991, producer of the album Thriller, by the king of pop Michael Jackson and as the producer and conductor of the charity song “We Are the World.

Life with the newborn triplets was intense, but Heather and Jenny worked as a team. Their days were dictated by routines - feeding, burping, and finally sleeping - all designed to keep everyone happy.

They named their little trio Quincy, Jasmine and Ginger. And as they grew, their needs became more complex. Gone were the sleepy newborn days and Jenny and Heather found themselves exhausted. They reassured each other that things would get easier in time. When the going was getting tough, they would look down and their amazing little trio and remind themselves of how lucky they were and grounded themselves in the moments of sweetness.

Jenny was in her element with the babies, but privately, Heather found herself struggling. She had not fully overcome her grief at her mother's death, and being a mother herself she found herself wishing daily that she could pick up the phone and call - to ask for advice, to ask for help, for her Mom to come over and make the baby stop crying and tell her she was doing a good job. But she couldn't allow herself to break down - she had to remain strong for Jenny, they had to remain a team .
