Hello!! I love your work! Everyday i literally check your page to see if you upload! You are the best!

Now, can i please request a human teen buddy ( around 15, small ) who is a genius, but still a kid, loves to have fun and literally seem dumb but is very smart. They end up on the lost light, and they hang around with some of the bots, like whirl, percy, nautica, brainstorm, rewind, domey, ratchet, drift, rodimus and mags & megs.

At first some of the bots had fun, but one time buddy, trusted them with their past. Telling everyone around that they didn’t had a parental figures growing up, they were always in foster care and the only thing that helped them was their intelligence, and because of that ended on a program to the lost light. Most of the bots are shocked, and they comfort buddy. But without buddy knowing, a war starts between their friends to win the custody of buddy and guide them.

Magnus wanted buddy to be in his care because they respected him and always asked him questions.

Rodimus wasn't much on the war, he was going to be the one that anounced the winner, but still wanted the best for their little friend.

Brainstorm and Percy tought of buddy as the little genius since they helped them sometimes in their works, and liked having them around.

Nautica tought of buddy as the sweetest thing and wanted to be around and never leave them like their real parents did.

Rewind and domey were fond of the kid and wanted to help them, and because they had a good taste in movies.

Drift was actually fond of buddy, because they never saw him as a monster or a traitor. They knew his backstory and all his problems, but they always treated him with adoration. He teached them how to fight and how to wield a sword.

Ratchet saw the kid most of the time because they were in the medbay a lot of time, watching when they healed somebot, he saw something on the kid, determination. He liked the kid, it reminded him of Drift. He started to teach them some medicine things.

Ratchet and Drift loved the kid, and they came to think of them as their own. When they heard their backstory they were sad, because, who could leave a great mind to itself, but they took the oportunity to be their guardian.

At the end of the day, ratch and drift won custody. And they were going to talk with buddy that night at swerve's. But as soon as they come inside, they hear crying. They inmediatly ran to the scene. And then they see how Buddy is chewing out some bot just because they talked badly about drift. After the bot rans out crying, drift grabs buddy and spins them in his arms while saying " you did so good, sweetie. You are the best!! That's my kid." Buddy's in shock. The ratchet says " that was awesome kiddo, you are awesome. You are the best kid." That hurt buddy and they answer with tears that they are the best parents in the world. After talking everything down, they become one little family. A little family who takes care of each other.

Human Buddy in the custody battle of the Lost Light (Ratchet and Drift are the winners)

Buddy was sent to the Lost Light via the ‘Young Liaison program’. This program helped get the youth of the nation into space programs at minimal to no cost at all.

Buddy was drawn from a lottery to join a field expedition on the Lost Light.

Their main assignment was to keep an eye out for any potential security risk Megatron may still have for the inhabitants of Earth.

They were certainly one of the youngest to graduate from the program, but that didn’t stop the adults from putting the 15-year-old on the ship.

Magnus and Rodimus making their way to the main bridge to meet with the new human liaison.

“I heard they were their youngest human graduate in the program.”--Rodimus

Magnus nods, showing him a data pad with the Liason’s record.

“Indeed, as well as having excelled in most of their classes, listed top of their classes and highly recommended by their peers-- ”—Magnus

“Sheesh! They sound like a mini you.”--Rodimus

They both stop when they see a small human looking from their perch in wonder at the ship around them.

“Magnus… did you also forget to tell me that they’re a kid?”--Rodimus

“…That explains many of the vague writing…”—Magnus

The human turns to the two mechs smiling widely walking to them with a hand outstretched.

“Hello! My name is Buddy, and I am your new liaison for Earth! You must be Rodimus and Ultra Magnus. It’s an honor to meet you two!”--Buddy

Rodimus flashes a smile at them and holds out a digit so Buddy could shake it.

“Welcome aboard Buddy. Have you gotten the tour yet?”--Rodimus

Buddy’s eyes widen in excitement.

“No sir, not yet. But I was hoping to know more about this ship and all!”--Buddy

Buddy stands up straighter.

“I mean—Thank you for offering me a tour Captain sir.”--Buddy

“You can just call me Rodimus, Buddy. Now, shall we?”--Rodimus

Rodimus offers his servo to Buddy to climb on.

They look a bit hesitant but then throw caution to the wind and climb on.

Buddy relaxes a bit sending him a happy smile.

They turn to Magnus.

“I will be reporting to the meeting room for our review Ultra Magnus sir. I have some paperwork that I need to review with you concerning Article C 4, sub section 3—are you okay?”--Buddy

Magnus is trying to hold in everything together.

“O-of course.”—Magnus

Buddy just had stars in their eyes as they met their new bosses and got the tour around the ship.

Many of the bots didn’t mind the little human now amongst them.

Soon enough Buddy managed to worm their way into the sparks of most of the crew thanks to the time spent together and the adventures they had.

One late night at Swerve’s Buddy decides to open up about some of their personal life before the Lost Light.

They bounced around from home to home thanks to the foster care system their ‘parents’ put them in.

And how their smarts were the only reason they even managed to get into the program.

There are some comforting words passed around.

As the words began to be pass around, many bots suddenly realized something.

They wanted to be there for Buddy.

Maybe even a potential parental figure?

… now let the custody battles begin.

To make things as fair and as safe as possible Megatron, Magnus and Rodimus pulled the entire thing together. Well, more Magnus and Megatron than Rodimus, he just really wants to be the announcer.

Magnus had to go through all the paperwork and applications for Buddy’s custody.

“No, no, no, definitely not them. What—who put Overlord’s name on the registry form!?”--Magnus

Whirl’s laughter is heard at the end of the hall.

Buddy safely in his cockpit taking notes per Whirl’s request.

“You see Buddy, we have to destroy them bit by bit. Sometimes you can’t to the big stuff, but it’s the teeny stuff that can REALLY winded a bot up.”—Whirl

Buddy nods scribbling more in their notebook.

“WHIRL!”--Magnus

“Now for the next part, escaping the claws of authority!”--Whirl

After the registry was filled, the rest was simple count of elimination or forfeit.

Many bots did find themselves thinking twice about becoming parental figures to Buddy and preferred to be friends to the human instead.

Heading into the semifinal’s things got a bit more structured.

Buddy spends about 2 weeks with each bot or bots who are potential candidates for the custody.

At the end of the 2 weeks Buddy is to stay with neutral bots meanwhile everything gets ready. The neutral bots were bots that didn’t want anything to do with the competition and could keep a relatively unbiased opinion of the competitors.

“And the winners for the neutral bots are… Ambulon, Powerglide, Nautica and… Whirl? How did Whirl even—“—Rodimus

Whirl smashes a cube on the ground in victory.

“HAHAHA! SUCK ON THAT LOSERS!”—Whirl

“Whirl, we all—“--Nautica

He tosses Buddy into his cockpit and runs out.

Powerglide, First Aid and Nautica run after him.

“Whirl! Stop hogging Buddy!”--Powerglide

“We’re coming Buddy!”--Nautica

“Don’t try to resist! It’ll only make him angrier!”—First Aid

“WHATS HAPPENING!!!!?????”--Buddy

Oh, that was the little detail that somehow never occurred to anyone on board.

To tell Buddy about how some bots on board were getting into fight to be their parents.

Buddy just thinks that they are holding some sort of ‘Can you stand the Organic’ competition like what happened last Halloween.

The finalist came down to 3 pairs, each with Whirl’s choice of Team name.

Brainstorm and Perceptor aka Simpatico.

Rewind and Chromedome aka RDCD.

And Ratchet and Drift aka Dratchet.

Brainstorm and Perceptor were first.

 They tried bonding with Buddy with all sorts of scientific things.

Trying to reach Buddy the best way they knew how:

Science!

Whether it be lawfully good science or Chaotic good science, that was up for debate on most days.

Perceptor walking back into the lab.

Brainstorm runs out the door with Buddy in his servos.

“Brainstorm! What in the name of—”--Perceptor

“HIT THE DECK PERCY!”--Buddy

Perceptor investigates the lab just as a colorful explosion of confetti filled the lab and part of Perceptor’s face.

“I told you not to do it!”--Buddy

“But it was a challenge! If that inventor could do it, so can I!”--Brainstorm

“Its fictional Brainstorm! Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is a FICTIONAL MOVIE! None of its inventions are supposed to work because its FICTIONAL!”--Buddy

“But—”--Brainstorm

“BRAINSTORM!”--Perceptor

“… I suggest you start running Stormy.”--Buddy

“Agreed!”--Brainstorm

By the two weeks the pair had grown fonder of Buddy, but the pair soon realized that it would be best if they just stayed close friends with Buddy.

It wasn’t anything they did wrong, rather seeing another couple look at Buddy made them forfeit.

Next up…

Rewind and Chromedome.

They do have talks about more sensitive things than Brainstorm and preceptor being slightly more in tune with their emotions than the other pair.

They end up bonding through movie nights and stories.

“No way!”--Buddy

“Yes way!”--Buddy

“Wait, wait, wait! You’re telling me that Prowl and Domey used to be partners?! I mean how?!”--Buddy

“It wasn’t all that bad…”--Chromedome

“What was that Domey?”--Rewind

“Nothing!”--Chromedome

But like the last pair, they saw it better to have Buddy as a close friend or have them see the pair as uncle figures.

Finally Ratchet and Drift.

Buddy eased more with them having spent the most time with them prior to this.

That’s what happens when someone is a bit accidentally prone to bruising and weird unrelated injuries and loves learning about alien culture.

They go well together.

Buddy opens a bit more with them as they also share some advice and stories.

I have something I want to share with you guys…”--Buddy

“We’re here kid. What is it?”--Ratchet

“I…I’m afraid…”—Buddy

Drift raises an optic.

“You’re afraid? Afraid of what?”--Drift

“One day I’ll slip up here and then they ask for me back. I’ll never see you guys again and—and—I’ll be all alone again…”—Buddy

Buddy looks down and shakes a bit trying to hold back the tears.

Drift reaches out first and hugs Buddy close to his spark chamber humming a little tune.

Ratchet makes his way to the two and holds them both.

“You’re not going anywhere kid. You want to know why? Because you’re good at your job and you have help. Do you think any of those scraps for brain peers of your back on Earth could be doing what you’re doing? They’d quit within the first hour.”--Ratchet

Buddy chuckles a bit.

“That and no one will let you go from the ship because of that. You’re stuck with us whether you like it or not.”--Drift

Two weeks are done, and it is time to officially tally everything together, even though it is obvious who won.

Buddy gets sent with the neutral bots to Swerves while they look over the data.

Dratchet wins.

But Ratchet and Drift don’t celebrate their win. They want Buddy’s opinion on this before anything.

It’s their life too, they should have a say in it.

The pair go to break the news when they hear crying and yelling coming from Swerve’s.

Ratchet and Drift are sprinting to Swerve.

They burst through the door to find a bot slightly cowering at a red-faced Buddy.

“--AND IF YOU’RE MINISCULAR PROCESSOR THINKS THAT YOU ARE BETTER THAN DRIFT AND RATCHET YOU HAVE ANOTHER THING COMING! YOU HONESTLY THINK YOUR HOT STUFF!? IF I WAS BIGGER, I’D PLANT MY FOOT SO FAR UP YOUR AFTERBURNER THAT YOUR DESCENDANT WILL STILL BE TASTING MY TOES! AND ANOTHER THING—"--Buddy

The bot runs out of the bar before Buddy could continue their verbal rampage.

The bar erupts in cheer and praise when the bot leaves.

It wasn’t often to see the little liaison snap and the utter verbal beating, while well earned, was brutal.

That was something to celebrate.

Drift and Ratchet weave their way through the crowd as Buddy is getting passed around.

Drift grabs Buddy hugging them tightly.

“THAT’S MY KID!”--Drift

Buddy looks at him startled.

Ratchet pats their head affectionately.

“You earned that one kiddo.”--Ratchet

Buddy suddenly understands what they are saying and starts bawling on ratchet’s digit hugging them tightly.

The pair is a bit scared but soon realize that they are tears of joy.

They pair relaxes as they enjoy the free drinks and keep Buddy close.

Some day this turned out to be.

2. Optimus or Megatron

Gonna have to go with Optimus on this one, even considering how much I like IDW (B-Megs). I just find that Optimus inspires much more direct, compelling emotions inside me both on the page and off of it, he makes me feel things so much. Megatron has never made me cry just from thinking about him.

Also, as another tiebreaker, Optimus is someone I could actually respect in real life and get along with decently well. Maybe not be besties or marry each other (I would marry him though for real) but at least on a close enough wavelength we would understand each other. Whereas I think if I met Megatron in real life I would kill him something something the more similar you are to someone the more you dislike them but we don't have time to unpack that

12. Least favorite ship(s)

Oh boy that's a spicy discourse ask huh lol?

The non-controversial answer to this is that I hate Dratchet because Drift is boring and annoying and there's nothing special to me about the Dratchet romantic dynamic at all, it's just so bland and just there. Cygate should have been the most popular MTMTE ship, at least it's more flavorful and doesn't have Drift in it.

I'll put the more spicy disliked ships under a read more just so that people have to opt in to read and no one can whine at me for clicking on the "read more". Content warning for me talking negatively about ships, don't like then don't click.

StarOP is one of my least favorite ships because it comes off very much as "trophy husband Optimus exists solely to validate Starscream and be his uwu husband," and I simply dislike any Optimus ship/portrayal of Optimus that makes him seem as if he's just there to be a trophy husband and not an actual character.

Speaking of trophy husband Optimus only existing to validate the other character, I used to be okay with OPlita but now I really don't like it because it seems like every other piece of OPlita fanart is made by the typical M/F shipper who can't just ship a man and a woman normally and has to go "NO YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THE WOMAN IS TOTALLY THE GIRLBOSS WIFE THAT KICKS THE SHIT OUT OF HER HUSBAND WHILE HER HUSBAND DOES CHORES AND WORSHIPS THE GROUND SHE WALKS ON." I hate girlboss fandoms so much and most Elita/OPlita stuff I've seen seems to be ripe with that.

Hate MegOPlita for similar reasons, Optimus is always made the idiot trophy husband who's just ignorant and stupid in both MegOP and OPlita individually, MegOPlita to me is just "what if the fandom decided to combine two of the worst ships for turning Optimus into a boring chump of a character that only exists to be shipped with the Character The Ship Fans Actually Like" and it just annoys the fuck out of me lol.

I also don't like MegsMags/MiniMegs because I find it to also be very bland and the "ship" itself kind of came up out of nowhere in IDW1 and I just find it to be incredibly meh.

More Than Meets the Eye Retrospective Issue 4: "Life after The Big Bang" (Patreon Review for Brotoman.exe

Hello all you happy Autbots and welcome back to my issue by issue look at Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye, as funded as always by Brotoman.Exe, we chart a course through one of my faviorite comics of all time as a bunch of autobots head up into space on a quest or something but really just to find themselves, adventure and what not.

I"m really pumped going into this one for a number of reasons. The first is a simple: Transformers Earthspark just debuted and while I haven't seen it yet (I have a giant pile of shows to get to, though I fully intend to get to this one before the year end so it can be in contentoin my best animated episodes of the year list.) it sounds really promising. The fact Danny Pudi and Zeno Robinson, both voice actors I dearly love, are in the main cast dosen't hurt.

It's also notable for the fact that from what I have learned Earthspark.. takes a few pages from this era of IDWformers book. It takes place post war, though how the war ended is still vauge, Decipticons are given restraining bolts to prevent transforming, and biggest of all and something vital to this very series in the future.. Megatron has quit as leader of the decepticons and is now on the side of good, if not neceisarily agreeing with the Autobots despite allying with them. And yes for those of you knew, that's an arc in this series and one of it's best and most important, it just dosen't come into play till season 2 so we're years off from that. But given IDW Megatron was I belivie the first version of Megs to do this and certainly the most prominent, I wouldn't be suprised if it's where Earthspark got the idea to try it in animation and it's tremendous this comic had enough impact on things to do that. Now if we could only get some of our faviorite b-listers in animatoin again eh? Still a wins a win.

And to be fair to earthspark it does diffrent things with the concept and in a lot of cases better than Robots in Disguise and it's followups did: The autobots and cons are still stranded on earth so for now Cybertron is a non-factor, the rights of the imprisoned decptiocns are questioned far more and better from the looks of it, and the main villian is a human, but given a decent backstory instead of spike fuckboy witwicky and his bullshit. What i'ms aying is it sounds great and i'm excited the cartoons are FINALLY taking some of the comics, specifically this one's, great worldbuildling and ideas to a wider audience. Not that this comic isn't great or , for now, widely avaliable, I just want more. MOREEEEEE.

Anyways, the other reason is this is my first review covering an arc I haven't before. See I first covered MTMTE as part of last year's pride, intending to make it a retrospective. This didn't pan out due to me having delay it, other retrospectives, all kinds of stuff so I shelved it intending to restart it at some point. Brotoman either saw that review and wanted more or simply loved the series and liked me covering it but either way he asked for me to cover it and for constiancy's sake, I covered issues 1-3 again. I didn't mind, those issues are great and doing it one at a time allowed me to dive in fairly deep and notice stuff I hadn't in previous readthroughs, but it is nice to get going in full.. and to not have to dig through my images for reviews to see if I had already made one for certain moments. So get on board as we go to a snow planet just in time for the icy grip of winter as things get real john carpenter real fast while Tailgate decides he wants to become a decipticon with predicable reactions from the command staff, all under the cut!

So we open with a Journal entry like doug only about plauge doctoring

It's here we meet a new member to the cast: First Aid. He's an autobot medic who was once a doctor.. but got bumped down to nurse thanks to Rung reporting on his ocd and erratic tendencies

Yeah this bothers me for a number of reasons. For one, registered Nursing is an important, noble and often thankless perfection. You dont get "demoted" to nurse. I get this is a battlefield situation, but it's two diffrent if very important skillsets, not something you get as a punishment for OCD and collecting WAY too many autobot badges, as shown behind first aid. Even Optimus would have actually trained battlefield nurses. I've become a tad more touchy about the subject since I now have one in the family whose an absolutely lovely person but even before that i'd seen enough works of fiction with nurses, MASH in paticular which ALSO took part during combat, to know you show them respect. I get it this is cyberton, it can be handwaved but it's not a great bit of writing. Say he was bumped down to residency or to a lower position.

At any rate we soon find out why he's writing his journal like an apocalypse log: He works at Delphi, a wintery hothlike outpost on the edge of Decepticon Justice Divison Territory. Which again kinda frames that yeah this was a bad reassignement for them.

This also marks our first mention of SAID Decepticon Justice Division, one of the series biggest antagonists, and it's once again a nice bit of setup I didn't notice my first go round and didn't think of my second. We also don't learn much, just the basics but it's enough to make it both understandable why Delphi is such a remote outpost, why it' sonly on the FRINGE of said territory and why two cons come running banging at the gates for sanctuary.

The DJD are a specialized unit made by Megatron to hunt down deserters or defectors. This being Megatron they don't so much throw a goodbye party as horribly mutilate the bot in question as slowly and painfully as possible as a warning to anyone who would try. And all we see in the panel descrbing tha tis the remains of one bot, cowering in terror, his robot guts ripped out in a pool of his own energon.

While we'll see them hands on later, like I said their some of the books main villians, it's a nice setup that instantly shows why you should fear them and why the mere idea our heroes will face them later is horrifying. And you haven't even seen what those encounters are like yet.

So naturally it's understandable two cons, with no alt mode who were clearly amde as canon fodder want anyone to protect them. The head of the facility, Pharma, wants them gone, thinking it's just two more dead enemies. It's part of a theme we've already seen a bit but I don't think i've gotten into but's important to this arc: the divide between the deceipticons and the autobots and the shades of grey in the conflict. Don't get me wrong, the autobots are still the good guys: Megatron wanted to conquer everything and as seen with the DJD, he and his men did some truly AWFUL things. But as we've seen in countless other wars just because you put a gun in someone's hand.. dosen't mean their evil. They may just be sketchy or in the case of these guys seemingly just pushed into the war. Not everyone who saw the universe with a gun in their hand joined the deceipticons because they wanted to break things or dominate other life. Some likely joined because of the intital social disparity that lead to the uprising.. and then may of gotten trapped, or as we learn later were MADE for this and had no choice in if they wanted to fight for the purple or the red. You can't blame Pharma for being a tad hesitant but you cant blame Ambulon and First Aid for showing these guys compassion. And as we'll see throughout this series just because you put on the red dosen't make you a good person, and as we've seen already with Prowl and will again not letting go of the war, TRYING to move on and make something new.. will only damage YOU and cause harm to others. You don't have to forgive the deceiptcons, it's understandable.. but you don't have to hold on like it's still an endless war to destroy their evil forces either.

Team Hypocratabot Oath wins out and the two are put in cells but still kept in observation and taken care of… until they activate their wonder twin powers, something happens and we cut to two days later.

Ratchet is doing grizzled old timer things, in this case sitting at a bar morosely, having a drink and wondering how the hell this place exists. … Ed Asner would've made a great Ratchet and if he never played him, that's transformers loss.

At any rate the bar is the one Swerve talked about setting up last time, with the now iconic locale of Swerves fully up and running. Seriously I didn't talk about it last time but the circual design, nice diner type booths and cool giant rainbow vat of various bits of robot booze.. it catches the eye and really stands out. The Lost Light itself is decently designed but I admit the hallways and hab suites kind of run together. I get why, ti's a star ship packed with people, but they feel kinda generic even for generic locations compared to say the halls of both enterprises. I may not have WATCHED a ton of star trek but man those hallways…. and I may of reached a new low in my career, speaking whistfully about hallways. I don't care. Those hallways were dope and I stand by that.

But the actual locatoins? All fairly memorable while fitting the vibe the ship is just a standard ship our heroes bought that happens to have really sweet unique engines: Rodimus' office, Swerves, the med bay, rungs office: most important locations are memorable, and well designed so you know exactly where everything is. I was amazed thinking back to the first few issues and realizing just how .. every room is well mapped out. IT's a small thing , sure, but a good spatial sense of where things are in a location helps it feel that much more real.

This being Swerve he hasn't OFFICALLY opened the bar yet.. which is to say most characters we know are hre, I paticuarlly like Chromedome with a swirly straw in the background. May make that an avatar for the blog at some point.

He just hasn't told command since Ultra Magnus hates fun. Why he hasn't told Rodimus I don't know, I can't image he dosen't like free booze and good time.. well free for him. He is captain after all.

It turns out Ratchet is here for a reason and not to see this gem of a backgroudn guy who looks so confused

Okay for ROBOTS it's probably healthy. This is very much a me thing: see in high school they had us read the Cyberpunk Novel Feed, about a future where kids are lethargic, relaint on tech and said tech is put in their brains via feeds. While it could come off a LITTLE

It did predict how widespread computer tech would become ahnd how isolating it can be.. via brain computers that slowly rotted you away. I don't remember much else. The fact Be More Chill did a similar thing with computer pills that slowly gaslight you into their world domination plans, does not help. Nothing good comes from putting a computer in your brain unless your a cyborg (and even then it' sa coin flip between dc's cyborg and A borg), or that's just how you were born.

It was a blog done on the old frequency for Wreckers: Declassified, done by Fistitron an optimus and wreckers fanboy we met in Last Stand of the Wreckers. And that brings us to yet another thing to talk about. This issue is kinda.. packed with way mor eof those than intended.

So in short: Last Stand of the Wreckers was done by the same team of this comic, only artist James Roche was more in the creatvie lead. In short i'ts the story of a rag tag bunch of autobots known as the wereckers, baiscally the Autobots verison of X-Force who go in and take on the most dangerous missions with every expectation they may not come back. Black Ops stuff. Last Stand followed a small group, including Mags himself, as they inflitrated a terrifying penal colony to rescue Fortress Maximus, giant city sized autobot and badass from Overlord, a terrifyingly powerful and amoral decepticon who was trying to cause as much of a ruckus as possible… essentially his version of doing THIS to megatron

It's a great work, plenty dark but in a well done way with really likeable characters your sad to see go. It's VASTLY important to this work as we'll not only see Overlord again, I won't spoil how, but Fort Max as well and the events of said book naturally come up given both played a part in it. We'll table both for now, but it's something I had to adress eventually and even considered covering. Ultimately I decided it just made more sense to jump into the setory itself, but i'd be up to covering it if anyone's interested.

Anyways a new datalouge was beamed int ot he brain last night and Ratchet noticed something: it was medical stats, specifically patient stats and he recognized Delphi's number.. and something in the last few days has caused the patients to be cut by half. Worried about it Ratchet decides to check it out since their close> This isn't his only reason thougH: if Pharama is there.. he's going to give over his roll as cheif medical officer to him. Ratchet's hands are still malfunctioning and as we established in the first issue, his main goal here is to pass on his legacy.

We get a brief scene with Rodders and Mags. Naturally Tailgate's request to be a decepticon has royally horked off Ultra Mags who wants to DO something about it. Maybe beat it out of him. He doesn't now day's young. Rodders is more worried about Magnus than Tailgate, pointing out even if he wanted to Tailgate can't become a con anyway as naturally for the guy who set up a group to hunt down anyone who leaves and tourture them to death, Megs also had to make the decitipbrand ritual as metal and edgelord as possible, with part of your spark casing being used.

Magnus on the other hand seems off and the why is quickly explained: With the war gone, everyone seems a lot more individual and naturally captain stuck up his tail pipe dosen't like this… and feels lost. He also points out when Rodimus tries to use the quest as a uniter that most of the crew.. really isn't here for that. And thus he dosen't know WHY he's even here. It's likelyt he crew's chaotic energy and relaxed manner was already a lot for sam the eagle here, and Rodimus advises him to loosen up budddy.. okay he dosen't say it that way but her certainly thought it that way. And shockingly he DOES have a plan to deal with Tailgate.

Back on MEssatine, where Delphie is, Ratchet has dispatched a team of himself, Drift and Ensign Ricky er Pipes. You remember Pipes right? He was alwasy there. Good old pipes. Strangely he's the only autobot here WITHOUT any red in his paintjob.

Pipes is loveable though, having been stationed on Cybertron or Space Stations his whole life he joind the lost light since unlike others he never got to see the universe even with a gun in his hand. So far he feels it's wet and kinda brillant. He is cautious about this being so close to the DJD as we get more foreshadowing: Swerve saw them in actoin once and coudln't talk. Swerve. Swerve coudln't talk.

We also get our first mention of forging, with Ratchet mentoning most of the best medics were. I'll get more into THAT later, as it's more mentoning it now to pique the audiences intrest for later. Like the DJD this will be important later. Honestly i'm thrown by how much Oda-Level setup Roberts tucked away in throw away lines.

Ratchet being a crotchety old goat who dosen't like his new agey collegeu's stuff decides ot needle him a bit, pointing out how Drift SHOULD be worried: this is DJD territory.. and as i've mentioned before Drift is an Ex-Con. And one of the most high profile ones at that. It's why Ratchet dosen't buy it: a small but brutal and near unstoppable band of killers versus an old man, a rookie and drift himself who while badass is someone they'd likely fully prepared for… and he's not worried

Their shouting gets interrupted as Pipes finds a giant red X on the wall.. adn given this isn't the x-men that cannot be anything good. So naturally he decideds to ram into it..

This.. gets him covered in corpses and railed out by Ratchet for being a dumbass

… honestly now i'm hearing more Kurtwood Smith. Who is still around and would make a perfect Ratchet. Just saying Earthspark crew. Don't think he's shown up yet and even with That 90's Show he's got time for it. Do it. Hav ehim put his foot up decipticon ass. He's even red. How I never thought of this before I don't know.

Drift.. decides to be smart and cuts up a zombie…. who was shambling and barely a threat. So a guy. He cut up a guy. A guy Zombie. With a melee weapon

So before ratchet decides to say screw the infection and put a foot up botht heir asses Red Alert shows up. He marks Pipes with a stay the hell away x and explains all of this is a plauge: some sort of virus has gotten loose (hence the casualties), confirming what the x said.

Back on the Lost LIght Tailgate is nervous as Ultra Magnus grabbed him out of his habsuite and told him he was going to teach him a lesson. Keep in mind Taigate is only about as tall as one of Magnus' legs. Turns out Hot Rod is he just wasn't going to phrase it that way because you know, that's terrifying coming from the guy in CHARGE. His solution is ellgant if mildly messed up.

Hot Rod brought in Rewind, who being an archivest has tons of footage of the big events of the war, and uploads the mdirectly into Tailgates head in teh span of a few seconds… basically filling him in on what went on in the war in seconds. (everything that matters)

Notably it includes Megatrons rise. He dosen't edit out the fact that Megatron was doing a good thing at first.. but it's mostly there to show that no, the deciptcons still weren't great and did a LOT of war crimes. And while I get why this was done, worse people coudl take advantage of Tailgates naivite.. it's still far from the best way to do it. Showing him the worst of the war thrown at him… was not the way to show him how bad the war was. Showing him the footage i'll admit was great: Rewind has both made and collected plenty and it's a way to show it without doctoring it for bias, evne edited together: this is just.. things people saw at ht eend of the day, thigns rewind saw. It's a godo way to hav eit sink in.. I just feel maybe speed running it was a bit much for the poor guy and not the thing heroes shoudl do. But it does help the ambigiuity WITHOUT making our heroes total monsters: what they did wasn't great.. but like I said there are worse people out there who coudl recurit tailgate for far worse. There's no telling WHEN they'll met a deciptcion whose decided the war is over when theys ay it is who could use poor gate as a spy or as a living bomb or something. And as we'll see next season, Tailgate is VERY susceptable to this sort of manipuation, as someone will play the same thing on him.. just not wearing the badge they were worried about.

Also I REALLY love the detail of getting to see Tailgate's optics up close> I always wondered how the visored transformers saw, even in this very series but simply just.. neve rnoticed those before in this scene. Beautiful haunting stuff.

Anyways back on Delphi we find out causes your optics to break down and leak rust, then everything does before you collapse. And while the medics themsevles have x's, their fine. It's only the patients who are in danger as well as the various staff other who all quickly died off, leaving it down to our three doctors. As for why they didnt send out an SOS commuincations been down since the "big bang" that caused it. They also find a patient that catches Ratchet's intrest, who will be revealed at the end, one whose been comotose.. but First Aid has a suggestion: spark jumping. Basically attaching fancy jumper cables to two sparks, using a healthy one to help a weaker one. See this is one of the many reasons I love james roberts: he'll ask deep questoins about war and what have you.. but he's also not afraid to introduce new stuff to the mythos that answers dumb questions he likely had as a kid like "can you jump a transformer" And it's awesome.

Back on the Lost Light… Tailgate dosen't take things well yelling at Cyclonus.. who tries to say "Did you think it was as simple as good and bad guys"… forgetting he actively asked Tailgate "I wonder which side would you choose". Then when tailgate hits him to no avail, understandably upset he had him askingm to be decpticon on a ship full of former autobots who might not take him asking to be part of them so well as the command staff did.. he BACKHANDS the guy and literally kicks him while he's down

Yeah… while I do think Cyclonus is an intresting character this moment soured him for me a bit. He knokws tailgate is out of it, out of time like he is.. and yet brutally if only mildly attacks him and leave shi ma sobbing mess.. for being mad at something HE DIRECTLY SET UP. I.. dont' get what James was trying to acomplish here and given where the two's relationship goes it's deeply uncomfortable. There were better ways to show how emotinallys tutned cyclonus is. Why.. why is it always slapping.

Back on Dephi we wrap up. Ratchet tries to talk to Pharma whose in the isolation cell.. only for things to go pear shapes. Pipe has explosive goopy rust happen, and Drift has to nonlethally incapa ciate him so they can get him on an iv. Then drift starts leaking out of his eyes.

As Pharma comes back.. thrown in by the cons, who have gotten weapons and escaped. Things seem bleak, even Ratchet's ready to surrender.. when we find out JUST who the vip was.. and that First Aid succeded in giving him a jump.

We'll get to this inevitble asskicking next month. Before we go soundtrack corner. Our first song is the Next Life by Suede. It's VERY good, nciely tying into the feeling of dread at hte start of the issue and the senes of hopelessness at delphi. IT just ended up on a movie soundtrack so THIS is the image I got when I looked it up on youtube

Why does this man have a manquein of taylor swift? Still really good emotoinal song. The next one, Smokers Outside the Hosptial Doors, by Editors.. is eh. It's very much just your standard morose ballad tm. Good guitar work nothing else. It fits the tone of the issue, but it's one of those clear signs me and james roberts just don't have the same mustic taste. I prefer peppy often poppy synths or rock music with some energy. He likes far slower more methodical stuff. I'm not agains tslow stuff, as I covered last time I friggin love the mountain goats.. I just like some stuff with energy to it more often than not, so i'm picker with the slower ballads. Suede worked, Editors diddn't. That's all it is really

How did you first get into Transformers and who was your first favorite character from the media that got you into them?

So for my entire life I had never consumed any kind of Transformers anything ever. I wasn't even sure if it was a Japanese or a Usamerican frachise. But I had a Tumblr mutual who was really into it (I had also recently watched a couple youtube videos), which is how I came to know Transformers were for real gay, something I didn't see coming. And making sure that was in fact accurate, I ended up reading the wiki pages for Cyclonus and Tailgate. This was on December 5, 2018, I know the exact date.

Also, at the same time, my main fixation back then was Venom (the comics, not the movie) and Donny Cates was not only making a disaster of his run that had no understanding of Eddie and the Symbiote as characters, was destroying the characterization and development Mike Costa had just lovingly worked on (the irory) and was just a bad story on its own right. He was also stalking Tumblr and complaining on Twitter that people here didn't like his comic and potraying the fanbase as irrational fangirls.

So I was upset and wanted a distraction. And after reading the wiki pages on the cygates I thought I wanted to see more, so I read mtmte 47. Then I read mtmte but only focusing on the cygates, that makes them my first favorite characters. Then I catched on that the story seemed actually good and read it properly, might as well read the rest of phase 2. Then might as well read phase 1. Then accept this is my life now and chek other stuff in the franchise. Switching my focus from Venom to this. And here I am now.

Here's another thing that I'm quite certain has no real evidence that people take for granted:

Whirl does NOT have any manual dexterity issues.

Pick up a fanfic. You'll see this with whirl fics all the time. He fumbles and has difficulty with complex motor skills. The reason he can't build a clock anymore is because his big old claws can't work with the tiny pieces.

And I just think that's not... Actually backed up by the text. I think the actual comic shows that whirl has full manual dexterity and it is only his own self hatred that is preventing him from making clocks again. That's why when whirl refuses ratchets hands in the end it's legitimately because he does not need them.

The most obvious evidence I have is that whirl does spark surgery on Megatron and we see all those itty bitty little "fingers" he has.

And I'd also like to throw out there that whirl HAS upgraded his claws. He does not have the same class he had from his reformatting. When he got empurated he had the same claws we see glitch has- and we see he still has them in Wreckers. And then in MTMTE he's had a full redesign! Initially I just assumed this was artist reinterpretation and didn't put too much stock into it; but during the time travel arc we point blank see whirl watching himself in the past and he hauls in the last prisoner before Megatron. And we see him on the page in his old design! It's not just the art. Whirl HAD a reformatting between wreckers and mtmte.

Part of that IS those claws are super different. They aren't hands but they are like pincers, on a swivel, and he can rotate them around. They got a pretty wide range of motion. And again, little fingers.

Ratchet talks about medic hands and how they're So Sensitive and only Forged Hands are good enough and whatever but like. I think he's just wrong. I think this is just an example of ratchets own ingrained bigotry. Cc bots probably usually DO have shittier hands, but that's because no one bothered to make the good ones for them. But I think there's no evidence that hands just as good Can't be made. Especially since we see whirl do fucking spark surgery without forged hands. Literally literally look no further than mr hands himself: chromedome, who is a cold constructed bot that had his hands almost certainly rebuilt when his needles were installed. He can be so precise and so delicate that he can read your mind by touching your brain. I think that ratchet really is just... Wrong. He's projecting. You can build medic hands.

Just like. That's the thing. When I sat down and reread mtmte I did not see any actual on panel evidence that manual dexterity was something whirl ever had a problem with. I didn't see any indication his claws actually made it difficult to manipulate things or pick things up or be precise at all. He's just got trauma.

Mtmte Lugnut & Anode. From what I've seen of them, they're fucking precious ladies, but they do give off kinda kinky vibes to me, sooo I can see it with them.

This is ridiculous. Megatron heaves a sigh as he attempts to read a report from Ultra Magnus for the fifth time. It may as well be static, he doesn’t stand a chance at being able to focus on some bland report on the comings and goings of the ship. Not with you right there tempting him reading the same report. Surely, you’re almost finished reading it by now. Then you’ll leave him go about your other duties on the ship.

He must’ve been staring for too long, your eyes meet his own through your peripherals. You briefly glance down at his data pad, noting that it’s still on page 1. Megatron is, admittedly, somewhat embarrassed to have you see how poorly he’s managing his own work. Part of him wanted to interject and say that he isn’t normally like this, maybe come up with some pathetic excuse that you’ll hopefully indulge him in. 

Before he can say any of that, your light chuckle tears him from his train of thought. Primus, what an intoxicating sound. He saves a clip of it to listen to on repeat later, but you don’t need to know that. You would hate him if you knew about even half the recordings he has saved of you.

“Struggling to get through it?” Another chuckle, today was a good day for him. “Yeah, it’s an especially dry read this time around. You can probably get away with skipping it, the most interesting thing in here is about Whirl getting thrown in the brig again. So, you know, your average Tuesday.” He hears you mumble something about not even knowing he had been let out from last time. As you finish, you bite your lip, a quirk he’s come to adore more and more each time you did it. 

Those lips would feel absolutely divine against his own.

He internally cringes. No, you would never want that. No one would ever want that with a genocidal warlord like himself. There’s no point in thinking about events that will never happen. Shared moments that you would never desire to have with him.

You don’t have to want it

His grip tightens on the small data pad.

He could force you

The screen began cracking around where his digits were digging in.

IT WOULD BE EASY

The dark direction his mind was going came to a screeching halt, as did whatever you were saying. Damn, he wasn’t listening... Good thing he’s always recording. 

“I know they’re not fun to get through, but christ Megs, isn’t that a bit extreme?” You forced out a laugh- much less appealing than your natural one- attempting to cover your discomfort. “I, uh, I’ll go tell Rodimus you need another one. Don’t worry about reading the rest of the report, you weren’t missing out on much.” With that, you hurry off, not waiting for a reply.

Dark Cybertron Chapter 12: That’s the Power of Love, Babeyyyyy

Thank fucking god, it’s almost over.

Our issue opens up with Ironhide deadnaming Slug, like the out-of-touch grandpa that he is. Everything is going to shit, the whole city’s covered in lasers like the world’s worst rave, and someone thought it was a good idea to let Swerve have a gun.

As the Ammonites try to murder everyone in sight, Whirl and Arcee have a little chat about how Whirl’s seemingly caused every problem ever in the last four million years.

…Whirl, you have been keeping up with your appointments with Rung, right? Like, I know he’s not the best therapist around by any stretch of the imagination, but surely something would be better than nothing in this case.

On the Lost Light, Hound, Perceptor, and Mainframe are keeping track of how many Ammonites have been killed. Everyone is extra British in this bit. Perceptor basically calls Hound a fucking idiot, because even with all the guys who’ve been taken out, there are still literally BILLIONS of these suckers running around.

Which seems a little overkill to me, but what do I know? Warcrimes aren’t my specialty.

Meanwhile, in the Mystical City of Making Science Cry, Starscream apparently knows what cosplay is, and takes a potshot at Jhiaxus for stealing his look. Metalhawk explains how the Ammonites got here in the first place, which, y’know, is cool. Love me some technobabble exposition.

While Metalhawk contemplates ending the comic event early, Starscream is getting his ass kicked by an old man who spent the war sitting on his butt in the Dead Universe.

Over with Team -Imus, Brainstorm’s taking a breather after getting Robertsed at the end of last issue. Ultra Magnus makes a pun, I guess to cope with the fact that he doesn’t understand anything that’s going on. Cyclonus is still dying, but this isn’t about him. Nightbeat is also dying. Oh, and Kup. Turns out, being a part of the Dead Universe is sort of an issue when you’re out of it.

Even though Galvatron was fine. And Jhiaxus. And Nova Prime, for the little bit he was out of it.

I feel like this plot point kinda just shows up when it’s convenient.

Anyway.

Brainstorm has shit in his lab that can help them not die, but he and Skids are gonna need help to get all these undead morons back to the Lost Light, which means that only two folks would be going to face Shockwave in this final confrontation.

Speaking of Shockwave, he’s gone full Burning Justice with that time drive shoved into his chest, as he makes fun of Megatron for being a dumb stupid idiot who gave him everything he needed to end the universe. He reveals himself to be a nihilist, claiming that a Cybertron which only exists for existence’s sake- and without any form of life- is the ultimate in perfection. Also, he’s a communist now. A nihilistic communist.

Just… whatever, Shockwave.

Megatron’s annoyed by all this posturing- which, same- but enough about him, it’s time for Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime drop down from… somewhere… to kick some ass. Shockwave promptly shoots Magnus, and is about to do the same to Optimus, when this starts happening:

Huh. Wonder what all that’s about.

Shockwave snaps out of his stupor and proceeds to fire on Optimus, yelling about being the only thing that exists as he does.

Over with Rodimus and friends, Cyclonus is bitching about Rodimus not leaving him behind so he could go fight Shockwave. Nightbeat, who I guess just doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut, tells Cyclonus to quit it, because they all know that he just misses his boyfriend. Cyclonus, though blatantly annoyed, doesn’t actually refute this claim. Brainstorm wonders aloud just how this gaggle of assholes managed to escape the Dead Universe without murdering each other.

Rodimus explains that when they heard the singing at Swerve’s, it proved they could still get out of the Dead Universe, so they desecrated Nova Prime’s corpse to make a space bridge. Brainstorm became a doorway, because he’s very nearly dead, and oh yeah, he should probably fix that when they get back to the lab, and also reconsider his lab safety protocols.

The gang reaches the outside world, and Rodimus is given a chance to spout off his personal philosophies.

Fantastic, you funky little man.

Then everyone looks up in the sky and sees some real bullshit.

Hey, Cahill? I just wanna talk, man. Just wanna talk about this boobie Windblade you’ve cursed my eyes with.

Back over with Jhiaxus and Starscream, Jhiaxus just cannot shut up. He just keeps waxing poetic about how smart Shockwave’s plan is. I couldn’t even tell you what the guy’s saying- my eyes glaze over whenever he gets a speech bubble.

Metalhawk at this point has had quite enough of all this nonsense, and decides he’s gonna throw himself into the equation that allows the Dark Cybertron prophecy to manifest.

By killing himself.

He just fuckin’… tosses himself into some heavy machinery and explodes, and that throws all the ores out of wack, since he’s got the Resurrection Ore in him. Jhiaxus is distracted by a man just straight-up dying in the same room as him, and this give Starscream the opening he needs to stab Jhiaxus in the gut.

Then the background just straight up disappears, as Rattrap lets everyone know that it’s all still going to shit, but in the opposite direction.

Really not sure about this art direction, but whatever. I’m over it.

Back outside, all the Ammonites are exploding. All of them. Billions of the little suckers, just popping off like fire crackers. The environment’s going to be ruined at this rate. Metroplex is having a great fucking time. Happy for him.

The Lost Light calls the ladies inside Metroplex’s brain room, and lets them know that they’re gonna break up Monstructor like the mediocre boy-band he is, though not without Mainframe being difficult beforehand. The ladies jump out and enter the fray, admiring Arcee’s style as they do.

Back with Rodimus and pals, Nightbeat’s being fucking cryptic, and Brainstorm gets to work making it so folks aren’t dying from being in the wrong universe, after a little prodding to his ego.

Back in Shockwave’s Super Saiyan Energy Bubble of Pure Unadulterated Logic, Shockwave says that’s he’s fucking ripped, and Optimus couldn’t beat him in a fight. Clearly, this means we’ll have to use our words to resolve this, like adults. Optimus isn’t too sure about that option, however.

I mean, do I even have to- Optimus, that’s GAY.

I have the sneaking suspicion that Roberts wrote this portion of the script. Y’know, just given his track record.

Then Megatron blasts Shockwave with his fusion cannon, and makes fun of Optimus for being a sentimental fool.

The fact that “Dark Cybertron” is telling me this makes me so mad. Like, you don’t get to talk, Exposition Central.

It’s at this point that Megatron drops a bomb on everyone present- he’s done with being a Decepticon. He’s gonna be an Autobot now.

See, ol’ Megsy here has seen the error of his ways- that by fighting the Senate, he allowed them to change him into a murderous warlord. To prove how much of a nice guy he is, he’s ripped the Autobrand off of Bumblebee’s lifeless body and duct-taped it to his chest.

Which seems a tad disrespectful, but okay.

…Megatron, you do realize that, as the leader of the Decepticons, you could just tell everyone that they need to be nice, and that would more or less be the end of it, right? You could just say “not evil anymore, I want to be loved now”, and everyone would be all “sir yes sir.” This is going to be a PR nightmare, I can already tell. Shockwave certainly seems to agree with me.

I really like this panel structure. Want to say this is the only place it happens, too. It’s just too bad it lives in “Dark Cybertron”.

Shockwave’s not having a good time right now, and he’s convinced that Optimus and Megatron have teamed up just to make him upset so he loses control of the time drive. The two spout off a little Autobot propaganda, and then Shockwave Remembers™.

Shockwave, having had his shadowplay reverse violently and abruptly, is horrified to find what he’s become. Alas, it’s too late for him- the only way to stop the time drive is for Optimus to kill him. Optimus promises to remember who Shockwave was- a callback to the line Shockwave gave him back before his empurata- and then shoots the everloving fuck out of the guy. Megatron helps.

And that’s a series wrap on Shoc-

The gang high-tails it outta there, IDW Optimus once again proving to be the shittiest version of everyone’s space-dad, as he leaves Bumblebee’s body to be consumed by the Shockwave Singularity. It’s looking pretty hopeless, but luckily none of these bastards can die without fucking up Season 2 of MTMTE, so the Lost Light swoops in to save the day.

Down below, Soundwave and his gaggle of small children and animals watch as the Lost Light fucks off into the distance. Soundwave’s having a time and a half, as he realizes with his balls-to-the-wall senses that Megatron’s joined the Autobots. Galvatron shows up to try to work out a deal. We won’t be seeing where this goes, because that’ll be covered later on.

The Lost Light lands in front of Metroplex, and over to the left of that are Rattrap and Starscream, climbing over the wreckage of the city. Rattrap tries to warn Starscream that things are gonna be tough, now that the Dark Cybertron prophecy has come to pass, but Starscream isn’t really having it. He’s gotten very paranoid, likely due to stress, and tells Rattrap to not play this game, because he’s the best player who’s ever lived. Then the Lost Light gang shows up and we get this face:

Sure.

Later on, Megatron and Optimus are hanging out in the Sky Roller, not-talking, until Megatron tells Optimus to get on with it, since the issue’s about to end. Megatron was totally serious about becoming an Autobot. Optimus isn’t really sure what to do with that. I don’t think anyone’s really sure what to do with that, to be honest.

Megatron, in turn, asks Optimus if he really could look past all the bullshit Shockwave pulled in the last several million years, and he gets a non-answer, because addressing your feelings is for losers, clearly. The two exit the ship, and I guess everyone else was just… standing outside waiting for them to talk it out. Weird.

...And with THAT, I am finally released from Comic Event Hell!

INTERVIEW: Transformers lore and characters as discussed with my 74 year old mother

Backstory: I talk about fandom stuff a lot with my mom (she’s one of the original Star Trek fangirls so she knows her fandom shit lmao) and recently I’ve been discussing Transformers with her. 

Me and my mom are very open with each other, and we have some interesting fandom conversations. 

Here are some lines from a recent call with her that I thought might be interesting, regarding Transformers stuff and especially some interesting elderly person perspective on Ratchet. There’s also some talk of the theology in Transformers lore, including Drift and Spectralism, and a bunch of other stuff too.

All conversations transcribed from a recent Skype call, with my mom’s permission.

M is my mom, Me is just me-- So that you can tell who’s talking, lol. When other real people are mentioned, their names are redacted and replaced with an X for privacy. 

Getting Started:

Me: Okay, there are a lot of younger fans for Transformers who might be interested in this kind of discussion, but I don’t see a lot of these conversations saved and shared anywhere, so if you don't mind I want to share some of your reactions to learning about Transformers stuff. 

M: That’s okay, very professional of you to ask! The internet is a job now, I guess. I’m being interviewed, fancy. 

On Ratchet’s Age/Health and older people in media:

Me: Ratchet’s the medic, he’s an old guy. Older than a lot of the other bots. In the comics (MTMTE/LL) he has a chronic illness and he eventually passes away from either that or complications related to it, although we don’t see it happen on the page. It made everyone sad; He’s a fan favourite. 

M: I know how that feels, getting old and dying! I had years of thyroid symptoms before they had to take it out, I had endometriosis and they told me I couldn't have you, it’s an unsure thing. Now I’ve had skin cancers removed, I have too much potassium in my blood, I have fibromyalgia. I never expected to live this long. 

Everyone is really just guessing at health stuff. It’s ironic that the doctor couldn’t diagnose himself, but I think he probably knew what was wrong and couldn't bring himself to accept it. Old people might accept that we can’t do some things any more but we tend to be depressed about it. Nobody really copes with it very well, you know X had a stroke and now she’s aphasic, can’t speak anymore, can’t read anymore, and she used to be a nurse. She’s older than I am, but it’s sad. She’s so smart and clever, and we’re just old. It’s what happens. 

I bet Ratchet was scared. As a doctor, he’d know what can happen when you get old and decrepit. I think he was in denial, a lot of old guys seem to be like that. 

Me: He was the medical lead on their ship, the Lost Light. I think you’re right and he wanted to be functional for as long as possible; He wants to be helpful and his job is his life. It would be hard for him; He struggles with retirement in the comics. 

M: Sounds about right. I’m old as hell and I still work! Although that’s mostly because we all need money to live, and not so much because anybody wants to have a job at this age, but still. If he liked his job, he wouldn’t want to be pushed out. I loved working at the park; When I had to quit, it was devastating, but I didn’t really have a choice. 

By the way, the audiobooks you sent me for X have really made her happy, she can read again, sort of! So thanks for that.

Me: I’m glad the audiobooks I sent you helped!

M: They have, you’re a life saver! 

Me: I’m just glad they’re useful for her! 

I think it’s interesting that his age is a part of his character in terms of personality and story arc; Do you enjoy seeing older characters in media that reflect the realities of age and being old, even when it’s difficult or possibly depressing? 

M: Yes! There aren’t a lot of old characters, and the ones that are out there are mostly just joke characters or you never see them too often. I think the creators must think that old people don’t watch TV or anything, but the reason we don’t tune in is because everything is all about young people, and that can be hard. Watching people run around when you can’t anymore can be painful for those of us who have lost that ability now that we’re elderly, or watching kid-focused stuff can make us miss our families. 

It would be nice to see old characters that are included and are competent. 

Me: Representation is important. 

M: Yes. 

On Religion in Transformers: 

Me: So, you work in a church. Just pointing it out so readers know where we’re coming from on this. 

M: Yep, Episcopalian on the beach here, a small church. Services are mostly online due to COVID so I’ve lost hours on Friday, unfortunately... But I’m not complaining. 

Me: And we both like the more spiritual lore type of content, it’s some good shit. 

M: Always love seeing ancient Gods in space! 

Me: So, there’s another old guy character, Alpha Trion, who’s a kind of sage-like mentor to Optimus Prime. 

M: Optimus! He’s the truck! Everyone knows him, he’s the main guy. 

Me: Yep! So Alpha Trion is an archivist, and when Optimus Prime was younger, depending on what version of the story we look at, he also used to be an archivist. 

M: Librarian truck! 

Me: Yes! 

M: I love it. You worked at a library for a little bit. 

Me: That work placement was the best, loved it. But Alpha Trion, depending on which version of the lore we look at, is hinted to be one of the formative deity-entities on their home planet, Cybertron. 

M: Cybertroooooon. Haha! Good robot planet name. I’m into this so far, very cool.

Me: It is! And Alpha Trion is sort of the living memory of the early days of their planet and civilisation, but nobody knows. Everyone just thinks he’s a kind of cryptic weird old guy. 

M: Relatable. I like this concept.

Me: It’s pretty good. So generally, things vary a lot from version to version of the story, but there are usually a handful of beings, early Transformers, who make up the character of their ancient lore. These are called the Primes, named after Primus, who pretty much always is depicted as their main God. Like Zeus, or Odin. 

M: Very cool. Optimus is a Prime! 

Me: Right! In a few versions of the story, he is the final Prime essentially reincarnated. The Thirteenth Prime. 

M: That’s very cool. 

Me: And in some other stories, Prime is mostly purely a title that has political connotations as well; It gets into a sort of weird Divine Right kind of area to help underscore some of the problems in their planetary political structure that led to the conflict that eventually became their civil war. 

M: That sucks, but unfortunately, also relatable. It’s very real world, especially right now. It’s interesting how Transformers is so incredibly in depth; I never would have guessed from the cartoon ads that were on TV when you were little. 

Me: Yeah, they seem to hide a lot of the lore, which is a shame. The comics are more adult than most of the TV shows, I think you’d like them. 

M: Sounds like it. I love the spiritual robot stuff. 

Me: In the comics, there is a religious practice called Spectralism that you might really like. They see auras by filtering different light wave bandwidths through their optics in order to detect mood, and all the colours have meanings assigned to them. They change their paint colours in accordance with those colour meanings as well, on some occasions. Meditation is part of the practice. One of the transformers, Drift, had at least one vision; It’s hinted there might be more to Spectralism, but we don’t see all that much of it in any further detail, unfortunately. They also believe in Primus as a deity. 

M: It’s a shame they don’t elaborate more on it. It sounds very cool, like the stuff we were doing in the sixties and seventies. I bet Drift has some black light posters in his room, we had tons of them. Loved the velvet ones. 

Me: He does have an altar, I think. Or a least a prayer area, it’s mentioned he meditates fairly frequently, from what I remember. 

M: (Starts singing Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple) That was the best, put some tunes on... Good driving music, too! 

On Femme Transformers and Sexism in Sci-Fi: 

Me: So there are some lady Transformers, too! 

M: Ooh! 

Me: There’s Arcee, who is the pink one you probably remember from the ads or the cartoons, and in the comics she’s officially transgender. 

M: Excellent! Trans-formers. Good. 

Me: Yes! And there’s not just her, there’s Nautica and Velocity in the comics as well, plus Elita-One... (I showed her pictures of each.) 

M: I like Velocity. I love the teal, the Thunderbird on the back is excellent. 

Me: I like Velocity, too. 

M: Elita has the head cones, not sure how I feel about that. She’s also pink, it’s hard to keep track of them all. I like Arcee, she has the Princess Leia hair helmet! 

Me: I figured you’d like that. It’s pretty good. 

M: I like Arcee and Velocity the best so far. 

Me: There’s quite a few female or femme transformers now. There didn't used to be, and there were some mistakes made here and there, but nowadays there’s a much wider cast. 

M: That’s good, I’m surprised, but in a good way. There were never women main characters in sci-fi stuff when I was a kid, it’s why Star Trek was such a big deal, and even then, it wasn’t all that great. There was Uhura, Nurse Chapel, but there were a lot of weird episodes...

Me: I love the Romulan Commander, though. 

M: She was the best! Wished we got to see her more. 

Me: Me too. But in Transformers, they’re doing a good job with the female coded characters, as least as far as I’ve seen.

M: That’s good to know. I’m glad that exists for girls who want to play Transformers, too. It always seemed like such a macho thing, the way they advertised it. 

Me: Yeah, that’s still a problem to some degree, but I remember it being way more aggressively worse in the 80s/90s. 

M: It was worse in the 50s when I was a kid! Cooking sets were the girl toy. They made Star Trek for boys, but when all the girls ended up being the main demographic that watched it, they cancelled it. It was Lucy from I Love Lucy who brought it back, I remember you told me that! 

Me: Yep!

M: I’m glad little girls have Arcee. And little boys. They’re robots, they don’t have gender! 

Me: Exactly!

oh my god this is the issue with the many many two-page spreads...the first time I read this issue I didn't realize that was a thing and GOD I was SO fucking confused. there's already a lot going on in this issue/arc but this made things so much worse hvbhjkdfbsk. I powered thru and still managed to understand most of the arc despite reading half this issue out of order (essentially) bc the website I read it on split the pages up and I couldn't tell they were supposed to be doubled (and also I'm dumb so I didn't figure it out)

anyways, the actual issue...windcharger is out here using his powers to rip a dudes arms clean off. wow!

AUGHHH and then we jump to rodimus ONCE AGAIN breaking his own rules and trying to save trailbreaker...IT HURTS MAN...god I love rodimus, I feel like him being broken up about crewmembers like trailbreaker dying is one part regular sadness over people he knows dying for tragic reasons, and one part personal guilt at someone under his command dying, even if he’s not involved/at fault. I love the dichotomy of this emotional reaction that comes only partially from empathy/emotion, but also comes from a kinda self-centered need for success as measured by people under your command staying alive. and taking into account rodimus’s life it totally makes sense that he’d act like that...GAH I love it. the complexity of it all!

oh man that last panel of trailbreaker holding up roller’s juice box...iirc the first time I read this I thought that was roller (cause of the juice box I guess? idk I'm an idiot) so I was like oh ok he must've come back or something. very much related but I didn't really think about tarn being a particular pre-established character and totally didn't read the whole ‘roller is tarn’ thing that was going on 

which in my defense ruth also didn't pick up on any of that while reading this and eventually like 2 issues before the reveal I had to prompt her like ‘you should maybe be wondering WHO tarn is’ vhbahjksdfbaksjdf

so! issue 37! this issue is a solid favorite of mine, id say definitely top 5 or even 3. I'm super biased bc I fucking LOVE time travel, it’s seriously one of my favorite tropes ever, and this issue hits all the time travel beats I love. characters traveling to the past and interacting with people they know! conversations that have multiple meanings bc of TIME TRAVEL! trying to save someone who meets a terrible fate in your future! fun time travel action! the time traveling characters being generally terrible at hiding the fact that they're time travelers! ITS SO GOOD. 

and I love the clever way everything is tied together here - where we get a nice continuation of shadowplay, with this taking place shortly after that with a lot of the same cast, and time travel classics like the good ole ‘if we hadn't travelled back in time and done what we did, the future we came from wouldn't have existed at all,’ in the flavor of ‘rodimus saving his baby self’ and ‘rodimus NOT saving trailbreaker’ and ‘everyone forgot about roller :(’ 

ok but like, did the lost lighters just go ‘oh well, guess rollers gone now.’ like they DID realize that the outlaw crew would have no idea what happened to him if they got their memories erased, right?? did the lost lighters figure that since roller never reappeared after this time period, that was how history was ‘supposed’ to go and they shouldn't mess with it? am I overthinking it? as usual: yes, probably. I love overthinking about comics, in case that wasn't obvious

basically...I love this issue soooo much. so so good and a bunch of fun tropes that I love. I mean the whole arc is like that for me since I love time travel so much. so I cant wait to (re)read more!!

As the undefeated world champion MTMTE Megatron Roaster, how do you think you would portray an actually good Megatron redemption? Besides the obvious getting rid of Jim Bob’s Nazi imagery and such.

thank you for giving me such a lofty title! and this is a great question! i think it deserves a thought-out response, so sit tight

first things first yeah, getting ready of the heavy-handed imagery. it’s not my lane to allude to the holocaust and it certainly isn’t james roberts’

the cack-handed allusion to jo cox in the mutineers arc legitimately makes my blood boil

-let the readership come to their own conclusions

one thing the narrative of more than losts the light was pretty guilty of was insisting you liked megatron and his character arc, and very subtly throwing shade at you if you didn’t

i think the optimus prime series handled this kind of thing pretty well by acknowledging upfront that optimus prime was a complex character and embracing multiple interpretations of him, positive and negative. that story invites you to come to your own conclusions about him, and importantly doesn’t actively compare you to a skeevoid brexiteer if you don’t

like, at the mtmte 50 signing jro compared that issue to an episode of community where it turns out all the background characters can’t stand the main cast. thing is, the Bit in that kind of episode is that the background cast are justified in not liking the main cast, because the kind of people who make up the cast of a sitcom would be absolute assholes in real life

the comic seems to not understand that, and presents the background characters (the sole dissenting opinion in the story) as this single amorphous blob of assorted irrational shitheads, led by a guy who canonically groomed one of the main cast and rattles off tory catchphrases like it’s his job 

i think a good megatron redeption arc would have to accept that there are some people who will never accept his redemption, in-universe and in the readership, and work that into the story instead of complaining about it

-make megatron the core of the story without making the story about him

one thing that really grated me about season 2 of mtmte and lost light was that the great ensemble cast found family of season 1 was more or less ignored to make room for Robot Atrocity Morrissey and his manpain. like, there were so many interesting character dynamics that could have been explored that just got thrown aside because we needed to see a mass-murderer look sad and rattle off poetry for a few more pages

characters DIED and we didn’t get any time to explore them because we needed to see That One Dude In Your English Class Who Has More Of A Statement Than A Question But A Robot shove his head up his interdimensional portal ass some more!!!

again, i think some lessons could be taken from the optimus prime comic, as well as elegant chaos, which i maintain is the absolute peak of mtmte/ll. 

in the optimus prime comic, optimus prime isn’t the moral core or the protagonist of the story- rather, he’s the discussion point around which the other characters in the story are able to develop. it’s a story ABOUT optimus, not the story OF optimus. i think using megatron as a springboard to develop other characters would have been a better use of the ensemble cast of mtmte, and would have actively_ used_ one of the main strengths of the series rather than working against it

elegant chaos does the same thing! this is a story about a character going back in time to kill megatron, but the narrative space of Autobot Megatron is instead used to give the characters we know and love additional depth. you did it SO WELL this one time, james!!! why couldn’t the rest of it have been like that!!!!!!!

one of the strengths of mtmte season 1 imo is that despite the varied ensemble cast, there was a pretty clear and focused story with consistent themes.

for example, broadly speaking the Theme of mmtmte s1 was emotional honesty and the personae we put on to hide parts of ourselves-rodimus, drift, cyclonus, whirl, swerve, tailgate, brainstorm, etc, all their arcs resolved around this general question. 

 this focus gave reveals and moments additional weight and changed the way we viewed this principle guiding question, and in turn the story as a whole

issue 15? rewind's final message? a beautifully crafted moment,but one with a particular emotional power due to how it cuts to the core of the narrative and the questions it asks, both about its cast and about its audience. that "I love you" speaks directly to the heart of the story 

going back to megatron, with mtmte s2 and ll i couldn’t really pick up on what story the comic wanted to tell me. was it about atonement? because there were plenty of avenues to tie into that theme (developing characters like chromedome, or whirl, or i don’t know RODIMUS PERHAPS JAMES ROBERTS) that didn’t get used, and megatron certainly didn’t atone for shit. was it about violence? because the whole final act of dying of the light was megatron going hog fucking wild with violence without consequences

the ending of dotl, with megatron’s brutal unmasking of tarn, implies the Theme is "violent people dress their ideologies in grand narratives to disguise and justify their cruelty" but that doesn’t track because megatron doesn’t change his behaviour at all, and the narrative doesn’t mention how megatron has done and is still doing the exact thing he condemns tarn for doing

this unfocused storytelling also means the shock reveals don’t have the same impact that they do in season 1. things like minimus ambus and everything about overlord had the punch they did because they directly tied into the theme of emotional honesty, but things like DOMINUS AMBUS IS THE PET AND AGENT 113 or TARN IS GLITCH or THE NECROBOT IS JUST A GUY OH WAIT NO HE’S A GOD AND SO IS RUNG fall flat because they don’t change the way we view the characters or the story, they’re just kinda. there

also doesn’t help that they don’t get any oxygen in the story itself because of the megatron dick vortex

basically, if megatron’s redemtpion tied into an over-arching question or topic in mtmte s2 and directly challenged or answered it, it would have felt more like an organic integration into the story and less like something i have to push out of the way to find the few slivers of character development for the cast i actually give a rat’s cock about

(I also theorize it shows he’s still alive, because when you reunite the halves, you get a steady, if slow, flow of Soul. Which, dead things don’t provide Soul, so you’re skimming off his Soul.)

Also just Take Me To Church gains a fun new dimension when they’re both gods and it looks like the Pale King got a lot more worship from the populace than the White Lady did.

I’ve answered this one before, alas I cannot think of any more! I don’t tend to do a lot of very strict headcanons, I am very much “If you make it work, that works for me.”

As in electron

So I guess before Bludgeon and Thunderwing and Galvatron and Scorponok and Overlord and Ratbat and Soundwave and Straxus and Shockwave there was this guy in charge of the Decepticons called Megatron? And it turns out there's been a couple of toys of him? Who knew?

Oh, I'm such a wag. But to be honest, I don't really have a huge amount to say about Megatron as a character. He was pretty much before my time, y'see. I was born in 1984, and by the time I was old enough to understand Transformers the era of Megatron was long, long gone. I've already spoken about how Rodimus was 'my' Prime, and even though Optimus Prime had been thoroughly returned in Powermaster form in 1988, and Megatron did make appearances in the Marvel comic throughout it's run even after death (a sort of clone, a body swap, an actual resurrection all clown-carred together into a fantastically convoluted mess) I always tended to see the original Optimus/Megatron years as a sort of prehistory, the Before-Times when the older kids were into Transformers and I was more into wearing nappies. It's in our nature as children to want to take ownership of the things we like, and a previous generation's toys can have something of an off-putting nature to them. Child me would have killed for a Galvatron toy, but turned his nose up at a Megatron.

So, roughly 4 million years later I'm an adult collector putting in a preorder for MMC Tyrannotron, confident that this will be The One Megatron that I can keep forever. See, the other problem with Optimus Prime and Megatron is that these days they receive so many new toys that I'm worried about being tempted to keep upgrading to a newer model. But this one was a keeper, a high-end third-party toy from Mastermind Creations, based on his latest iteration in the IDW comics. Yes, I thought to myself, this is a keeper. And then it was announced that the IDW universe would be ending. Hnnng.

Still a great Megatron. A great look. And while it's both unofficial and twice the price of the recent Flame Toys model kit, it does at least transform. Sort of. The problem is of course that during the entire run where Megatron took this shape, he never once actually transformed, not once. So it was pretty much down to MMC to decide what form that big hunky dadbod should turn into. And they came up with... a thing. Sort of a thing. It's not entirely clear.

It's got treads rather than wheels, an elongated nosecone which doubles as an absurdly oversized fusion cannon (hard to have a go at Tarn's double cannon any more when yours is the size of an entire other person) and tiny little wings near the back. Is it a tank? A jet? It's impossible to properly categorise it, because it looks like it was made up as they went along. Like, they put a bunch of transforming joints in, folded it up a few times, and took what they ended up with and slapped a few vehicle mode bits on. Yeah, as a transforming transformer, this is not a highlight. But even so, it does have a hell of a lot of presence, able to trundle down a motorway taking up all three lanes at once before kerblamming a path through anything that happened to be in its way. Lorries, cars, Little Chefs, that sort of thing.

I feel considerably more attachment for the IDW version of G1 Megs than anything coming from the cartoon. This was a character with an incredibly well-defined arc, far more so than Optimus Prime's, even if that arc was largely retrofitted in after the fact. The social-revolutionary-poet-turned-murderous-warlord became a far more identifiable character than the designated bad guy that filled TV screens back in 1984, and aspects of this characterisation quickly became absorbed into the mainstream, in Prime and now Cyberverse. Megatron's time in the pages of More Than Meets the Eye / Lost Light shone a spotlight on the dualistic nature of his character, and put him onto a path of... well not exactly redemption, though many people are quick to label it as such. More a journey of rediscovery, of being able to find the person you once were before things went wrong, and bring that person back. And even by the end, Megatron's 4 million years of warmongering still outweigh his 800 years of good deeds. But at least Megatron ended his time in the comic as the person he wanted to be. That's powerful stuff. Most other Megatrons go out screaming incoherently and blowing up, so it's a definite step forward.

Or, if you want to take a step back, MMC put in another surprise, because with a few swapped-out pieces you can go from his final form to the very first one he was seen in, way back in Megatron Origin. Lest we forget, this was so early in IDW's tenure with the Transformers franchise that it had originally been pitched to Dreamwave, which today looks a bit like a first draft of many of the things IDW went on to do.

The alt mode makes a lot more sense now, since the front-facing fusion cannon has been replaced with a massive mining drill, and the wings swapped out for safety-striped panels. The drill can still be fastened to his arm in robot mode, but if you want to give him a more warmongering look you can swap out the drill bit itself for another, rounder fusion cannon barrel. Again, this one is ridiculously oversized, but I actually prefer it to the modern-look cannon. Unfortunately the yellow safety stripes are still there, which does look a bit out of place if you're looking to fit the Origin cannon on the MTMTE body. You also get a new head, mixing the miner and gladiator looks from the comic, and a new chest piece. It's not a perfect reproduction, but it's nice to have bonus options to represent the beginning and end of Megatron's life.

Still though, I can't help but feel that the effort would have been better spent making the MTMTE alt mode more attractive than dual-purposing the whole thing for a different look. It's a figure first, and a transformer second, which is a real shame. You also get, rather predictably, a lightsaber based on the 1986 movie and a purple energy flail-mace-whatever-thingy because Prime and Megatron will never escape that once scene where they briefly pull melee weapons out of their sleeves. You do a party trick one time and your mates will never forget it. Anyway, the mace is crap, having a real metal chain which makes it impossible to do action poses, and I've found the lightsaber far more useful given to other characters in need of a power-up. Blitzwing likes it a lot, for example.

I mean really, I bought this bastard so that I'd never need to buy another Megatron again, and so far it's worked out. But as time goes on and the original IDW 'verse fades into history he becomes more and more of a relic of past times. Alas, etc.

I'm trying to make a mtmte tailgate cosplay but I've never made one before,and I'm not sure what to use or do. How do you all figure out the proportions and measurements of the costume; and is cardboard ok to use or just foam? Also do you just use a black Halloween jumpsuit under the armor ? Sorry for all the questions. 😐

I’m gonna put this under a readmore because it’s complicated.

First, the easy question - you can definitely use a Halloween jumpsuit under your armor, or you can use separates. For Starscream I opted for gray leggings and an exercise shirt. We pretty much all used some combination of leggings and a shirt, but anything form fitting and thin will be fine. 

Ok here we go.

The way to figure out the proportions is to start from a size you can’t change, and use that for the main structural piece of the costume. For example, you can’t decrease your height (you can add if you must) and you can’t compress your shoulders. Those are your starting point. 

For a boxy character like Tailgate, it’s a good idea to start with a base like football shoulder pads. It will make the costume more comfortable and more durable. So measure your height in whatever shoes you’re using, and measure across your shoulders in the shoulder pads (or just your shoulders if you decided to forgo the pads, as they can be pricey - try and get some used ones).

At this point it helps to also take a photo of yourself from the front and side, and you can sketch the character over the photo. Try to get your sketch to be close to the proportions of the character so you can estimate where the various costume pieces will fit on your body. Once you have that general idea, it’s easier to figure out the next steps, which will use a combination of on the fly fitting, and actual math.

On the fly fitting is used for parts that must fit close to the body. An example might be the waist of a robotic character. Each of our characters has either a shirt that was modified, or a sewn bodice, for their waist, and the armor is glued directly to that. It’s easiest to fit that on the body and trace directly on the cloth, then add a zipper. Tailgate looks like he has 3 layers of plating on his waist/torso. You could also simply make a cylinder of foam and layer up the plating, depending on your build, and if you don’t mind the costume being kind of stiff.

Everything else uses math, and then you adjust your measurements. Tailgate is kind of a broad shape, so widening out his shoulders, chest, and hips will give you some nice proportions. For the math, you need to know the proportion between measurements made on you, and measurements made on your reference. Redo this math if you have different refs with different scales.

Here’s how to find a proportion. First measure the size of your actual body (for example, your height). Then measure the height of your reference, and divide your real height by the height of the reference. Say you’re 5′6″, or 66 inches tall. Say you reference is 6 inches tall. 66÷6=11. That means you are 11 times the size of your reference, and any measurement you make on your reference needs to be multiplied by 11. Make sure you check your units and keep the same units. You might switch to measuring things in millimeters if your reference is small, and that’s fine, but just remember that your sized up numbers will now be in mm as well. For example, say you measure a piece of kibble as being just 3mm across on your reference. On the costume, it’s going to be 33mm, or 3.3cm.

You can also create makeshift angles for shaping your armor, by tracing the angles found on your reference and then extending the lines out longer, based on the proportion you found. Here is a video on how to do that, and I plan on making a clearer one soon since I found my tripod. I’ll post in on this blog when I do.

Don’t worry too much about the math being perfect, since you are a different structure from a robot. You’ll have to make some adjustments to make it fit you. With that in mind, remember to make your patterns on something cheap like poster board or old posters, or even old paper bags. Anything large and slightly sturdy will work fine, and the color doesn’t matter. My mom gave me a whole bunch of old school board election signs and they’ve been great. This part is easier if you have a helper (I didn’t when I made Starscream and it was really hard). Have them tape the pattern pieces onto you and check the fit. You can trim them or tape on extra paper here and there until you like how it looks, then trace them onto your end material and cut them out.

You could use cardboard, but there are things to be aware of. One is that cardboard tends to dent and crease more noticeably, and the other is that it’s harder to do any curves. Tailgate isn’t too curvy, so it should be OK.
