Men truly instinctively believe femaleness is inherently sexual and I want to talk about it through the lens of sexualising pokemon. Specifically Gardevoir and Hatterene. I pick these two because there is literally nothing remotely sexual about their designs at all. Neither of them has a specifically stereotypically female body. Gardevoir isn't even confirmed to be intended to be feminine considering its Japanese name is SirKnight.

At most you can say that Hatterenes hair gives the appearance of a female body with a female breast, waist, hip ratio. And Gardevoir could be described as having a feminine looking haircut and dress.

And that's it. Literally nothing sexual at all in their designs. Yet they are some of the most common pokemon for straight men to make creepy fetish art of. So many men genuinely think they have been designed to look sexy. To them breasts exist to be sexual, and if it's not meant to be considered sexual they why give it the appearance of breasts? Feminine clothing exists to signify sexual availability, why give it a feminine appearance if not to signal it is sexual? They are incapable of seeing breasts as the neutral basic body parts that they are. Or just femaleness as a whole.

Its just so telling that femaleness and existing for sex are so linked in their minds that they look at non-human creatures that have some vague superficial resemblance to women and assume immediately that it was designed that way to signal sexual intent, rather than being designed that way because they are meant to be humanoid and that is how human bodies look.

It's quite ironic, considering that in purely biological terms, maleness only exists for the purpose of sexual reproduction. If we didn't need sexual reproduction our species would be entirely female. Just another male reversal.

it sucks how I feel like the most abnormal person in every friend group I am in.

Like, I'm an anarchist who's studying sociology, and I'm not the only one in my university which I know because I'm friend with a bunch of them.

But I'm one of those people who grew up on the internet, my hobbies are 2010s & recent animes, shows, mangas, & videogames. Discord's my main social media, or at least was until recently. My musics are bred and raised by and for internet, with a recent shift toward rave-bred ones.

And all of this is fine, I love it all.

But my friends clearly did grew up with the same interests as me. I got only two who're into video games, and only mainstream ones, not much into anything else, which, again, is fine, but kinda hard to share things with people when you gotta explain the whole of it every time. It don't bother me, but I'm sometime not even sure they get what I'm saying when I'm trying to share something about pokemon lore.

But on the other side, there's internet which is full of shit. How can I appreciate things when, the more I look into it, the more mysoginy, sexism, queerphobia, or other shit, I find.

The fucking ☕ whenever some meme is about women doing something in the wrong way.

Video games and streams, the nerds and otakus... How hard is it to find non-sexist manga? hard as heck. Trying to find some that don't sexualise lolis or give breasts that would break the back of any 40 years old dockers. Communities swinging between "men strong, women dumb" and "Beautiful women to fuck me. fuck the way you can't search for goth things without it being full of porn.

Trying to make a connection between those who are rooted IRL, and those who tries to avoid it at all cost is depressing.

B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?

I went through all of my stories trying to think of one that was inspired and I realised that there aren’t really any. I think it’s something I grew out of? Because as a teenager, I remember writing a KC fanfic (different account, terrible writing, doesn’t exist lol) where Caroline was very OOC and hated her school and wanted to move. And then she moves to Mystic Falls. I was about 14 and that was very much how I felt at the time. Hated high school, wanted to move. The Pokemon Go drabble I did was based on the fact that the app had come out and my sister and I were walking around all over trying to catch Pokemon 😂 Nowadays, I don’t think there are any personal stories as much as there are tiny little details.

M: Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share?

Always. Actually, not so much ‘on the back burner’ as they have been delegated to one shots and 3-parters. The actors WIP I had planned definitely is out the window now.

T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?

💀 I’ll just...be general about it. I can’t stand power imbalances. I talk endlessly about being a responsible writer and this is a big part of it. Just because you, the writer, are consenting to writing it and are aware that realistically that imbalance is not part of a healthy relationship, doesn’t mean your readers understand that. And I think far too often power imbalances are romanticised and sexualised. My own writing from years ago is an example of why it’s bad: because it normalises those themes for people who are not as developed. I did a post about why I’m wary of dark fics before that goes into it a little more. I get that nowadays, especially on AO3, there are precautions and much more elaborate tags, but that doesn’t always deter unintended readers from consuming your work.

X: A character you enjoy making suffer.

I think it’s pretty clear that it’s D*mon 🥲 it’s not that I enjoy making him suffer per say... He just happens to slot into an antagonist / villain role very well.

Y: A character you want to protect.

Kol. I’m a sucker for writing him. I just think he’s neat! Nothing is better than a character that is very smart but uses all his energy for making people think otherwise simply because he loves chaos. I like the idea that he has much more depth than meets the eye, that he can be wise in one breath and a dumbass, the next.

I know that writing a long drawn out reply to this isn’t gonna be worth my time, because I also know you won’t change your mind on this.

You’re right in saying characters without solid designs are exciting for creators to interpret, and that’s often how shows become popular! I personally enjoy those shows because I get to finally draw some representation for myself and others! But that’s not my issue. The problem is that interpretations themselves (including humanisation in this) are so often defacto white and skinny, and i have an issue with that. I’ve seen it with Homestuck, with OFF, with the humanisation of Bill Cyper, the Dice King, the DHMIS characters, Tamatoa, Bunnymund, spongebob, pokemon, those goddawful social media gajinkas - if there’s a character or a show or a podcast or a comic, there is a high chance the majority headcanon is white and/or skinny and/or blonde and/or hyper-sexualised. You have almost definitely seen posts to that effect.

There is a huge problem with women (almost always straight) taking male characters that are either gay, or headcanoned as such, and making them waifish twinks for their larger, darker, topping boyfriends to toss around and break and control. As a queer guy, I don’t enjoy that. It makes me being fat and trans inaccessible in fandom spaces. This has improved significantly over the years, I think everyone can see that, but it’s still so pervasive.

Not liking skinny Taako may make me a dick in your eyes, but at the end of the day, the majority of art and all the official merch is the white (or white coded, in the case of rainbow skin Taako) and the conventionally attractive. My opinion does nothing to stop that, and arguing with me won’t change the fact that, while those that draw Taako like that are totally valid, my Taako is my Taako, and my not reblogging their art doesn’t impact them in the long or short run.
