A Thing Of Vikings Chapter 129: And A Warm Embrace
Chapter 129: And A Warm Embrace
During the periods of the Kingdoms of Francia, Brittany (Breton: Breizh), in its position occupying the westernmost peninsula of the region, was regarded as a stubborn outsider—culturally Brythonic Celtic instead of Gallo-Roman, with a different and distinct language, identity, and historical background. Beginning as independent petty kingdoms formed by displaced Celts from the Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain, Brittany spent the next few centuries fully independent, occasionally joining forces with the Roman Empire against the likes of Attila the Hun, but otherwise being mostly occupied with domestic political matters and associating with their fellow Celtic nations in the Isles, occasionally sending reinforcements to the Cymru, Picts, Kernowyon, and Gaels as they fought against the Anglo-Saxon invaders.
Later, in the 9th century AD, Brittany became a tributary suzerain state to the Carolingian Empire under Emperor Charlemagne, who managed to impose vassalhood on the region, reducing the Breton lords to semi-autonomous status. This did not last long, however, as in the aftermath of Charlemagne’s death, they rebelled against the Carolingians, securing their independence as a unified kingdom of Brittany in 851 AD after defeating Charles the Bald at the Battle of Jengland. From there, they proceeded to expand their kingdom at Francian expense, taking large swaths of territory around the eastern extents of their peninsula, and reaching their greatest territorial extent in 867 AD.
Internal political disputes ensued, stopping the kingdom’s expansion, and rendering it ripe for conquest by Viking raiders in the early 900s; by 919 AD, the entire kingdom was fully occupied by Norsemen, who looted and pillaged many cities and monasteries without facing organized resistance. The region was eventually liberated from the Norse occupiers by Alan “Twistedbeard” II, grandson of King Alan the Great, the prior king of Brittany, between 935 and 939, culminating in an attack on the last Norse stronghold at Trans-la-Fôret by joint Breizh and Frankish forces. Meanwhile, to the neighboring east on what had once been part of the kingdom of Brittany, Rollo the Viking had settled in with his own men, offering allegiance to King Charles the Simple in exchange for claim to what would become known as the Duchy of Normandy.
With his lands in ruin from decades of war and looting, Alan could not hope to restore his prior kingship and likewise made the same decision as Rollo had, offering tribute to King Louis IV of Francia in 942 AD as the Duke of Brittany. This action ended Brittany’s time of independence and politically brought it into the Kingdom of Francia as the Duchy of Brittany. However, the newly-born duchy still had a long independent history and a cultural identity as separate from the rest of the kingdom…

Episode Two of “Snot Pilgrim Versus the World.” Ft. Harald (Hardrada who Hopefully Won’t Go A-Conquering Anytime Soon.)
Apologies to time-period accurate Roman fashion, but Siglout/Snotlout/Sigurd does not exist within my head without massive boots on.
(I promise I’m only slightly irritated by my inability to get snotlout’s face right.
I’ve been making some maps for the alternate history HTTYD fic A Thing of Vikings (AO3 link here, TV Tropes page here) by, well, @athingofvikings. Here’s the map at the start of Book 1 (chapters 1-31):
While a lot of the details are educated guesses on my part, I’ve tried my best to keep most of this as historically accurate as I can. At the start of the fic the map changes are confined to this area:
Where aside from Berk, there’s also two other small dots, one in Lewis and Harris and one in Wales (between Deheubarth and Gwynned and Powys) corresponding to the Meatheads and Bog-Burglars respectively.
A few chapters into the start of Book 3, the map looks like this:
And looking at Europe specifically, the map looks like this:
It’s at this point that the map changes begin in earnest. (There are also a couple of maps I made in-between these two.) And yes, at 119 chapters this fic is long, but it is also a very well-written fic, so if you’re interested in checking it out I recommend it.
The Frostwyng Dragon
A creation of mine inspired by two sources. The first is the Ojutai Clan of dragon from Magic: the Gathering, which have feathered wings and a freezing breath weapon, while also being martial artists. The other inspiration is the fictional future documents that begin every chapter of A Thing of Vikings. So what I did was take the Ojutai Clan and adapt them into a scientifically viable species.
The first thing I did was decide to put them in an frozen environment, with the feathers acting as insulators, as feathers tend to be. I then looked up how a freezing breath weapon might possibly work, and my answer came in the form of CO2 fire extinguishers: when CO2 is kept under pressure it condenses into a liquid, and when it is released the rapid evaporation (liquid CO2 evaporates at -69 degrees Fahrenheit) causes the area hit by the liquid to freeze. (CO2 extinguishers destroy two sides of the Fire Triangle in this way, by denying Oxygen and cancelling the heat.)
So, I needed a way to make the dragon have CO2 under pressure in its system. The answer: an air bladder of sorts that would contain the gas until it condensed. And why would a dragon need this? Well, it’s an ambush predator! Change the Ojutai wings to a mottled white to blend in with the snow of its icy environs, and the air bladder would be used to keep the dragon’s breathing from alerting the prey animals.
Eventually, the dragons would figure out that their exhalations can freeze their prey, and learning how to spread the area of the freezing breath would let them catch more prey.
I don’t know enough about the sociology of ambush predators to figure out whether they’d all be very solitary or if they’d have family units or what, so I’ll leave that for someone else to figure out.
For A Thing of Vikings, have you thought about making Wulfhild fanart?
Hi, sorry for the delay, i just saw the notification for this ask!
Yes, i do plan to! In fact i plan to remake all the ATOV fanarts i did, and maybe more, as i’ve been getting better! I just need to finish some other projects that i’ve been putting off first (like the art classes i got on discount and still havent started) and i may have a bigger project for december that if everything goes ok will need a big focus on my part.
But yes, i’ll be making more fanart as soon as i can! I just can’t promise dragons bc i still have no idea how to make them xD
Thank you for the interes! And @athingofvikings, look here! Thanks for creating this amazing fic and providing so many ideas! Be prepared to get more fanart eventually!
From the reviews section of ff.net A Thing Of Vikings chapter 87:
Every single “trump supporter” in these comments has immediately, without any consideration for any of the points made in this or the previous chapter, proved them entirely correct. I’m reading at least two death threats, multiple condemnations that are straight up lying about things Trump’s done and have misstated facts about the COVID-19 outbreak, etc. The Trump stuff is all politics, but essentially; He didn’t drag the economy up, somehow. Those are remnants of Obama’s economic policy combined with a small global uptick. Economic policy takes years to go into effect, so we won’t know how successful his policies were until at least another half a year or more. And we won’t even know that because COVID-19 exists. So far, though, doesn’t look like he’s done much. He’s completely decimated the robustness of the economy; fallback systems that were formerly in place for all sorts of emergencies, economic, health, and otherwise, including the CDC(which he cut the budget of), pretty much every single department with a relation to population and earth/climate studies(which, contrary to Trumpist belief, doesn’t just have to do with climate change but also with things like *how we can avoid viruses jumping between species like coronavirus did* and *how we can get maximum yield out of our agriculture*, and more), dismantled or attempted to dismantle or is in the process of dismantling pretty much the entirety of the US healthcare support system(slashing federal contributions to medical think tanks and regulatory organizations, scaling down operations of said facilities, cutting government spending on hospitals and hospital plans), etc.
All of the above, whatever your opinions on their budgetary necessity, have for a fact caused one thing. You know what that is? The current COVID-19 crisis. Medical supplies; gone. Many hospitals; now underfunded. Medical plans for most people; kaput. Unemployment support for every class of unemployment, including temporary or transitional unemployment; nada. CDC; has been instructed to NOT do anything, it seems. Since, y’know...they haven’t done anything this entire crisis. Trump’s two biggest flaws, regardless of politics, are his impulsiveness and his ego - ie, his need to take credit for anything good that happens, essentially. That means disassembling the CDC so his task force can do everything and he can say, “Look! I did that!”. That means holding press conferences where he answers all the questions, instead of Dr. Fauci, or any other medical experts, or even Pence, who’s actually being the more reasonable one and letting medical experts do their work. That means going on Twitter, while hundreds of thousands have died, and peddling theories about the Democrats making up statistics about the COVID-19 outbreak, which directly contradicts the statistics provided by the very experts he appointed and approved. At the very least, Mr. Trump has been a font of misinformation that is stemming efforts to fight the disease. More realistically? His inaction is the reason the outbreak has spread so far in the US. His inaction is the reason why hospitals don’t have funding or supplies(enacting the DPA without using it? ️). His inaction is the reason there isn’t any cooperation on a state to state level to fight the outbreak; each state is going at it alone. His inaction has killed upwards of 20 thousand people, at this point; and it is slated to kill 60 thousand plus more, with how things are going.
Not only that; the sheer misinformation here about the outbreak is stunning. The Chinese federal government actually took pretty direct action as soon as they heard about it; issue being, it was the inherent corruption of their own government that prevented the federal government from hearing about the outbreak. Records show the city government had blocked any efforts to try and communicate the severity of the outbreak - and even news the outbreak existed - from the federal government. The instant the federal government heard, they sent investigation teams and started making moves to shut things down - most likely a PR move for the most part, to get their own butts out of the fire, but ultimately still the most effective move they could have made at the time. They lie about stats, true, but their methods of controlling the outbreak are effective. The reason why it spread so fast is not just because of global inaction - it’s because China is China, and the disease is exceptionally infectious. If I remember correctly, it’s twice as infectious as the flu; kills on an order of magnitude more people; has an extremely long period of time in which patients are both infectious and asymptomatic; can jump between species, as already shown; has at least three strains jumping around; is completely new to modern medical science; and is a coronavirus, a class of virus that has very few actual treatments as of the modern age. SARS and MERS, the other two most similar coronaviruses, had basically no reaction in terms of medical development; they were too “small” and localized. Not enough time, or sample.a, to even effectively develop treatments. All these things combined caused the current crisis. It’s one of if not the most infectious disease we’ve seen in centuries, perhaps millennia, or perhaps even ever. And that makes it a lot more dangerous than a disease that kills 100% of those it infects, or anything that lethal.
As for these responses and this story; Are you all really right-leaning Americans? Does freedom of fucking speech ring a bell? AToV is allowed to say whatever they want; as a more right leaning moderate, I agree with some of the things said(everything about Trump’s response to COVID-19 reeks of politics and not science), and I disagree with some of the others. But I can certainly see the point being made, that y’all are fucking toxic - and you know who I’m talking about. Death threats are unacceptable. The responses aren’t that bad, for the most part - even many of those disagreeing - but the disagreements with death threats and those complaining about the mere expressing of opinions need to stop. Y’all complaining about double standards, but in your fucking retarded self-righteousness you are applying a double standard. So you’re apparently allowed to express your opinions, not to mention for some in a way that’s illegal and can be investigated by law enforcement, but AToV isn’t on their own fucking story? Get a fucking life.
To the few who disagreed and responded civilly, without the “WaaAh you’re NOT allowed to express your opinions if they disagree with me! Shitty person!” Or “Go die for having an opinion!”, kudos to you. Although, please. Stop spreading misinformation about the virus. What we need right now is a coordinated federal and international response, not each state hammering in different ways at the same problem, and each country following suit. If one state fights it off, and a single person crosses over from another state - outbreak number 2 happens, and it never ends. Trump needs to at the very least stop talking about an economic reopening, because now that’s completely infeasible because he reacted too late, and start coordinating a unified federal response. Companies are sitting on their asses not doing anything; the DPA is here just for that. Private individuals with fucking 3D printers are contributing to this fight more than some corporations with professional factories and injection molds for masks/equipment.
Situation: ATOV has a drawing poll with several good ideas, including Queen Ruffnut
Problem: Queen Ruffnut did not win the poll
Solution: Draw her yourself because oh wow I do know a few things about drawing
And I think it turned out really well~
@athingofvikings I love you man, but you are one cold-hearted son of a gun.
Art for A Thing of Vikings, quite possibly the best fic in the httyd fandom
This is Heidrun, an OC that is a hell of a badass, as well as a major factor in Snotlout’s development as a person (because Snotlout just has that much respect for Heidrun)
@athingofvikings I’ve had these sitting in my camera roll for a while; I forgot I hadn’t posted them, sorry
Me? Absolutely in love with Wulfhild? How did you guess?
Gave her some archer protection and reinforced leggings since razorwhips have sharp scales. Tried to colour Mistletoe after mistletoes, so a tad lighter both in coat and eyes than her sister Windshear. I might have gotten stuff wrong but oh well
A Thing Of Vikings Chapter 128: With Open Arms
Chapter 128: With Open Arms
However, social forces do not exist in isolation. Even apparently singular points of social influence exist in the midst of a web of cues, directions, impulses, and directives. A useful way in which to conceptualize social dynamics is through a concept called dialectics. Related to the dialectical method of Greek philosophy, social dialectics allows one to frame many social issues in terms of two or more social forces in opposition to each other. In such a framing, “society” can be conceptualized as a web or fabric suspended between numerous forces working in opposition with each other, each of them trying to pull the resulting network in a direction of their liking. Wages for workers is perhaps the archetypal example of a social tension, stretched between the employer, who wishes for the wages to be low—if not nonexistent, in the extreme cases of thralldom—and the laborers, who want them as high as possible.
Consider other such oppositions; the aristocracy will be in opposition to the peasantry in terms of rights and privileges, and possibly also in opposition to the royalty. Hedonists exist in opposition with the ascetics. The intellectual against the ignorant, and possibly the propagandist. The agriculturalist against the industrialist and each in turn against the preservationist. The artist against the censor. The pacifist against the martialist. The authoritarian against the libertarian. The anarchist versus the statist. The despot versus the democrat. And so forth.
Each of these in turn stretch the fabric of society between themselves, forming the social environment of laws, mores, attitudes, beliefs, concepts, traditions and systems in which they live.

Episode one of “Snot Pilgrim Versus the World.” (THERE WILL BE MORE! *cackles gleefully*)
Sketches because I wasn’t about to line and color the whole darn Hagia Sophia. I’m (tragically) not a history buff (you people are seriously impressive), so I don’t know a lot about the Hagia Sophia’s undoubtedly long and interesting history—between being burned down and rebuilt and all that jazz—or what it looked like in the 1000s, so we’re going with a more modern version, or my best approximation of it.
Review: A Thing of Vikings
https://archiveofourown.org/works/10408971/chapters/22985466 of @athingofvikings
I'm obsessed with this fic, that is obvious, apart from that I would like to review this in a proper way since it´s ruining my life, so I guess I just have to ruin other into it to be released from its spell.
1) The characters are SO on point and have so many layers to themselves that even reading the most innocuous scene it´s a pleasure. snoutlout ma boy is that you?
2) The whole fic is set on the "real world" with a level of research for historical and cultural facts that it could be an anthropology thesis on its own.
3) AND the author keeps being faithful for Hiccup´s caracterization even in our blood thirsty times, and truly manages it? no easy way around it, no softedges nor unfaithfulness to our vikings.
4) I LOVE how we get to see the Hooligans as a Tribe, with each person adding to the great concept of the Tribe, they aren't copy-paste characters to fill for plot devises, it's so lovely to be shown all the tribe dynamics and getting to have favorite hooligans or insights on its behavior!
5) a proper balance of Hiccstrid!
6) The initial chapter notes taken from future books? talking about amazing world building, You got me coloring europe maps and naming cities there like I was back in school
7) The general writing being so good. I´m picky as fuck with my reading. a good story can be taken down with sloppy writing so easily, especially monsters this big in word count. I´m just awed at how the author gets to write something as big as ASOIF and keep it simple, well worded, easy to read and at the same time being literature-wise appalling. It's a very good use and balance of literature forms and straight forward writing. You do have a nice whetstone out there for sure
8) Techno-advance!!!! Do you really think you could place Hiccup on the "real world" without our boy changing it for ever? JA
9) The autor has Toothless to be more than just a dragon pet. +10
10) I really hope you got the time to read this, the only take back here is that is a massive piece of fiction, a blessing and a curse for us addicted.
Note, I'm not even halfway through so I ha even much suffering left
The Dragon Manual
So I LOVE the fanfiction A Thing of Vikings, if any of y’all who see this haven’t read it - I implore you to do so it is probably the best fanfic I have ever read (top three guarenteed). It was so great in fact that when a group of friends and I wanted to get together and do a D&D 5E campaign, I (as the DM) decided that this shall be our setting. For those ATOV readers, the story begins the morning after the Battle of Berk Sound.
Now, of course the players are going to be training dragons. So they needed an additional resource to help them out. The Dragon Manual.
Now this simplified manual acts as their Pokédex more or less, and I will add (and post) pages as we keep going on in the campaign. The in-world explanation is that each dragon training cohort gets their own simple manual with species they can see flying around Berk, and they will add to their book as they learn and grow as riders. So far I have 15 dragons completed, and I am really happy with them.
Now these pages are not D&D stats (although I do have them all statted out if any of you want those, special abilities and all), these are meant to act as training tips for them. However, as this is D&D, I have created a rules system for training.
With a mysterious note on the back of it.
Anyways, let’s get to what everyone really came here for. Dragons.
Stoker Class dragons are known for their intense fire and heat, this book has three of them so far.
Now, a quick note. On a few of these pages - the ones completed first - I left blank space on the second pages for my players to add their own notes. However, after giving them a sneak peek, they stated “We can’t write in this! It would just end up ruined and with dicks in it.” And, you know what that warmed my heart (the not-writing bit, obviously). So, as the book goes on the pages will get more filled out.
This next one has more text and seems out of place - because it was the second dragon added to the book by an encounter. The dumb-dumbs walked right into a nest. They survived, lightly singed.
Oh right ‘Life Size’. For scale these are all on 8.5″ by 11″ paper.
These dragons are characterized by rocky hides and rocky appetites.
Ugh, my least favorite drawing in the book. I love all the others but this one came off way too cartoony and doesn’t look like dead on like the on-screen models.
Sharp Class dragons are known for their wicked sharp body parts and a healthy dose of vanity.
Far and above the best drawing in the book, I love it so much.
So, I know I didn’t get this one quite right - especially on the back plates and the tail. Seriously, why did the RTTE crew create such a complex model?
Tidal Class dragons are known for their love love of the sea, and are faster in the water than some dragons are in the air!
Does anybody know what those weird barnacle-esque growths are on the side of the head? Because I got no clue.
Okay so there is no Fear/Tracker Class in here because, well if I’m completely honest I don’t like those classes. Fear dissolved right after the first movie, and its dragons got absorbed into Mystery as seen below. But Tracker class! Gosh I do not like it! I think this mostly stems from the fact they changed Nadder, if I really psychoanalyze myself - but like it was also just sloppy in my opinion.
Ah, my favorite of the mini-sketches. Just look at the little indecisive Zippleback!
This one’s notable as it is both the first dragon added from an encounter and the first untrainable dragon in the book.
Strike Class. These dragons are known for their blazing speed and fierce intelligence.
God I love the Skrill. This is my favorite drawing in the whole book, not the best as noted above, but my personal favorite.
And there you have it! The Trainer’s Dragon Manual as of 9 sessions in. Again much love to @athingofvikings for the awesome, fantastical story. Playing in this world is so fun, and the players are loving it!
If anybody has any questions, like wanting the dragons’ stats for instance, just message me. This is SentinelStorm signing off, and remember...
Stand Against the Storm!
It´s @athingofvikings birthday!!!
Heres everyone’s favourite ot3 enjoying the Thawfest in his super duper good fanfiction A Thing of Vikings
(Also please forgive me for the historical fashion inaccuracies I tried my best also also they´re probably freezing their butts off because I think this is taking place in April…)
A little thing I’ve done again inspired by @athingofvikings and his beautiful fic :3
(I swear I tried so hard to draw the dragons but I have a way with drawing animals, and it’s a horrible one)
GO READ IT GUYS ITS WONDERFUL
