People constantly ask how Theon didn’t die of infection, and I have a (horrifically gross) theory I don’t think anyone’s offered up yet:
The dogs ate the infection off him. There’s been many cases of dogs eating rotting or gangrenous flesh from their owners. It doesn’t seem like an altruistic act from the dog to save a human, they just instinctively do it as they’d do themselves. Well all seen or heard of a dog eating at themselves when injured or licking a wound. Theon lives with the dogs, eats with the dogs, and they were fond of him. Theon does this to himself when he tries to chew off a finger. Just like a dog would.
Theon mentions that the rats were eating him as well. That might’ve just been for atmosphere, but the thought of animals eating Theon crossed grrm’s mind I guess.
Anyways yummers Reek flesh for dinner. I’ve smelled gangrene in person (weird roommate got it) and my god it’s unbearable, but definitely something a dog would pick up on. I hope at least one person finds this interesting for fanwork.

Hey, Brother by @redrikki
Rated: G
Words: 1194
Archive Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Category: Gen
Characters: Theon Greyjoy, Ned Stark, Robb Stark, Jon Snow
Summary: “My sons will be your new brothers,” Lord Stark promised Theon, but it was a bit more complicated than that.
A really effective childhood ficlet with a gut punch of foreshadowing at the end. Theon trying to use the framework of sibling relationships he's used to to figure out how to interact with the Stark kids and falling a little short because it's so different is so funny and sad at the same time and such a clever use of child logic, feels very true to the impossibility of the situation.

My brain is booming with happiness and I'm frothing at the mouth because of @raskolnikovatthebarricade's Theon and Raskolnikov parallels (Part 1 & Part 2) omggggg. I have to go reread Crime and Punishment right now.

The Staircase
Before the Long Night, Theon needs to come to terms with one person especially. He finds Jon at their old hiding place, and they talk.
Here's the first part of my contribution for Show Theon Week 2022! I am totally paying the Iron Price, but I am a lousy Ironborn – I still want to apologize, despite not even knowing what for 🙈

You know when there's a character that went through substantial amounts of trauma and suffering and fic writers decide to keep all of that when they're making, like, high school aus. Sorry it's a little funny. Because fucked up shit can happen in real life but it feels so dissonant compared to. The rest of the fanwork and also the source

He could stay, alone in the world, without her. Or he could answer the call of the ocean.
It was not a choice.
