his heart is a birdly beast, a mass of down and claws. he can feel it, just there, a battering of plumage against his ribs, one careless foot catching on lung. he could stop it – could tear it out and dash it on the cobbles below. his hand is already reaching for it, digging amongst brocade and silk and halfway to his chest before he stops and casts it away. the bird beats on, its frantic energy not killed, but carried. taking shape in the stuttering tread of his feet, the to - and - fro flicker of his gaze. and all of this for what? for who? for him, of course, for him ... he had known him before he had seen him. had felt him in the tugging of his chest, the thrumming transformation in his heart.
a shimmer of gold, the ghost of a herald's horn. and there! his personal god awash in sunlight.
there had been a moment of collision, of two worlds joining – the laughter of children, a heavenly angel's choir. the swirl of a girl's tattered dress, a flash of golden eyes. and here his heart had started it's wild dance, here his feet had started moving despite his will. he is a man made defenseless : sans armor, sans all. naked under heaven's light ... he comes back to himself in starts. the jolt of a hand, the stilling of a foot. original sin at last taking hold : the horrible need to hide from the holy, the fear of his god's gaze. he sequesters himself behind a hovel, settles down amongst earth and stone. his head falls to his chest, his hands raising to hold it, and slowly his heart begins to calm its wild chatter. for a moment that is the end – his world once again made still.
and yet, and yet! he turns almost without feeling it, his eyes flashing out and back. and there, still there, king arthur sits, as radiant as the sun. he watches him with mouth agape : in awe of his easy smiles and gentle manners, in awe of his rightness with the world. a breath escapes him, too small the be a sigh ... and before it is finished arthur's eyes are upon him, pushing all the air from his lungs. for a beat all is silent. the children cease their playing, the birds stop their singing – his very heart stops his beating. all is gold and gold and gold again, a world washed in the color of his king's eyes.
his rises slowly, mechanically, numb fingers wiping the muck from his breaches. his head dips into the slightest of bows, brown eyes still locked on gold – as if this is a fairy's enchantment, both cast and undone by sight alone. ❛❛ your majesty. ❜❜ the words are barely more than a whisper, though he doubts not that arthur will hear them. such is this enchantment, this space shared by them and them alone. ❛❛ i did not expect you here. ❜❜ / @kinsword

Look, I love the opportunities that Forging Bonds presents in giving us more content and character interactions for our favorite characters. I love seeing characters interacting from different installments, it’s great.
But holy crap, I’m starting to see a negative effect from the Forging Bonds giving us the same character depictions over and over without showing the more interesting aspects of a character.
Like look at poor Balthus. He’s got a hefty amount of lore; a man on the run because his mother was exiled for being a commoner and his step-mother is absolutely horrid. Even though his manners are loose, his code of honor is unbreakable and he refuses any kind of compensation for trying to do a good deed from the heart. He’d probably have some really good conversations with characters like Corrin, Saber, Jesse (IF HE EVER GETS ADDED), Joshua, etc. He’s crass and loud and rambunctious but he’s a genuine sweetheart who protects the people he cares about, and he cares about a LOT of people.
Instead all we get is “haha funny gambling man gets slapped around by everyone” (Don’t think I forgot about that Malice Forging Bonds, IS. See if people would still be laughing if a male character grabbed a female character by the ear and twisted their neck in doing so). And it’s not just Balthus, all the subplots with the Heavy Plate Corps and the CHOP stuff (or Team Horny, with everyone like Laslow, Soleil, Gatrie, etc), while I get it’s there for comedy, really end up shoehorning these characters into perpetual comic relief. I’m scared for when characters like Vaike or Jesse (SERIOUSLY IS, I GET THAT YOU’RE RUNNING OUT OF VALENTIA CHARACTERS BUT. JESSE.) get added that we won’t see any kind of meaningful dialogue with other characters. It seems like they reserve the best interactions for fan-favorites only.

I have listened to 74 and Skies Forever Blue.
Personally I... don't think either really has much of a connection to Deltarune? I just think sometimes, authors really like exploring certain themes over and over again. Toby seems to enjoy exploring metafiction in video games, and subversions about 'what the people who fill certain 'classic archetypes' 'classic archetypes' in stories. (And I can't blame him, personally. I keep thinking up and writing stories where the 'chosen one' is subverted somehow.)
Could Dess and Kris end up mirroring the Princess and Knight in 74? It's not impossible. I've actually heard the theory that Kris is opening Dark Worlds to search for Dess in isolation from the song 74 before now. I've also always wondered why the creator of the Dark Worlds is called the Knight, and not the Maker or Author or Dreamer or Dragon or something like that. If the person who happened to be creating Dark Worlds was introducing themself as 'the Knight,' that'd be one thing, but it strikes me as kinda strange that the role itself is called the Knight. Furthermore, as I've also theorized in isolation, if Dess is meant to be an Asriel/Flowey parallel, it's possible that she does want to be rescued deep down, but feels she doesn't deserve it and thus lashes out and shoves people away.
So, analyzing themes Toby has done before and a few things about Deltarune. It's not impossible. But we know so incredibly little about Dess that some of us can't even agree on her species, so this seems to be another thing that seems like a big stretch to theorize about. Even if I, personally, like this kind of character and subversion of a lot more than 'what if Dess was a HOOMAN'
...That sad. I'd actually say that Deltarune already seems to have two characters that fit this particular parallel and subverson. Berdly and Noelle on a Snowgrave work as slightly less of a stretch. But really not much of a 1-1 parallel. XD
Mmhmm!
My first thoughts after listening to 74 and Skies Forever Blue was that both of these protagonists have 'Asriel' Vibes - 74 & Asriel are twists on 'Fairytales' - 74 has a perverted Princess & Asriel is secret 'Frog Prince' - while Skies Forever Blue's Girl has a similar tragedy to Asriel - a videogame NPC who has fallen in love with a careless HeroTM - and turns self-destructive because of said love.
(Both Asriel & the Girl also have a moment where in lue of a missing protagonist, they take control of the videogame world around them, making themselves the Protagonist, if only for a moment.)
...Leads one to think that Toby Fox loves deconstructing childhood fairytales. Applies similarly to Toriel, Undyne, Asgore, and Chara - twists on the Witchy Stepmom, the Hero, the Evil Demon King, and the Player Character.
Kris is a 'Hero' - a Knight in Shining Armor - and the twist is in plain sight - they are a Villain too - the fountain creator - and capable of being pushed to hurt Noelle.
(Not a statement on whether Kris WANTS to be the Villain - I don't think they do - which is probably why they let themselves be possessed)
The Most Obvious 'Princess' is Noelle - she's fits the bill for nice, well-born, and extremely passive - and she reminds me a lot of the Princess from 74 - because underneath the role of Princess she hides a decently complex and powerful person - and her own ability to hurt people.
(Susie rounds out the triad by being a Dragon/Villain with the ability to be a Hero - though I think we're missing a good chunk of her story still for me to comment on this - right now I view her as a Shonen Hero (like Naruto) in denial of her role, who would rather give it up to Kris and Ralsei.)
(Ralsei is purposely making himself a Tutorial Tip Fairy - so there's not much going on there until he breaks and grabs protagonistdom by the reins.)
Pretty much on the nose that Berdly is a corrupted Knight with Noelle as his Princess - though I don't think he'll have a similar 'Role' in the future - I think he'll relax in future chapters - and his relationships with the class / his family explored more.
I like to think he has younger/older siblings, and that's why he's so pressured to stand out.

can you... perhaps... tell us more about kendrick?
Sure thing! Please note that all information in this post is subject to change though!
As I mentioned earlier, he was a member of Team Phoenix. He starts out as... well, he’s not very nice to start out with. He’s cold and uncaring and only wants the best for Team Phoenix. He’ll stomp out any rebellion that he has to and doesn’t really care who gets hurt in the process.
That’s how he meets Zaid, actually. Kendrick is running an operation for Team Phoenix and Zaid is there to try and stop him. They fight, Kendrick messes up the operation, and Zaid has vanished by the time another higher up of Team Phoenix arrives. Of course, this starts a rivalry and by the next time Zaid, Kendrick knows who he is travelling with, who his family is, and what kind of Pokémon he has.
Despite all this information, Kendrick still ends up failing any task assigned to him whenever Zaid and his group of friends appear.
Of course, eventually, Kendrick and Zaid get into a fight just before a blizzard hits, which separates the both of them from their respective groups and forces them to work together. Kendrick gets injured sometime during this time, and Zaid, instead of abandoning him like he had thought, keeps him safe and as well cared for as one can expect while being trapped in a storm. During this time, they get to talking about why Kendrick joined Team Phoenix and why Zaid is so opposed to it, and come to a sort of understanding and a shaky bond.
After the storm passes but before Zaid’s travelling group finds them, Zaid makes the offer to Kendrick to join them, which he refuses. And when Zaid’s friends do find them, Zaid makes the offer again, which Kendrick refuses again. After that, Zaid leaves and Kendrick starts slowly making his way back to Team Phoenix.
At this point, Team Phoenix had given up on the search for Kendrick and assumed that he had died. So when Kendrick does reappear, still injured but breathing, there’s no warm welcome and he’s put back to work after a doctor gave a very brief look at him. And he’s not entirely sure why he’s surprised by this, but he is. Which kind of leads him to re-evaluate where he is in life, because if an enemy showed more care to his well-being than the people who were supposedly on his side, was he really doing the right thing?
His redemption is slow, and his acts of rebellion against Team Phoenix start out as small things, like adding pins on his uniform and breaking curfew, but eventually he starts giving information to Zaid and his friends about Team Phoenix under an alias. When he and Zaid next meet up, he reveals that he’s the double agent and gives him more information to work with. And when Kendrick is found out to be the spy, he is able to send a message to Zaid just before he is captured asking for help.
When Zaid and his friends do rescue him, Kendrick has been beat up quite a bit. He’s probably got a few broken bones at best (at worst, maybe a mix of blunt force trauma, penetrating trauma, and broken bones) and even though he’s pretty badly injured, he still refuses treatment. He knows that a lot more people got hurt (or worse) while he was waiting and hoping for rescue, and he’s quite insistent that those people get medical treatment first.
It ends up being one of Zaid’s travelling companions, likely Caleb or Shara, that practically drags a doctor to see Kendrick because he wasn’t going to one on his own, no matter how desperately he needed one. It takes months for Kendrick to heal properly, mainly because he's trying to make sure that he doesn't visit the doctor when he thinks he doesn't need to, and when he doesn't visit the doctor, it's Zaid that drags him there. And when Zaid insists that Kendrick actually start taking care of himself, he slowly starts taking his advice seriously.
Kendrick's still cold and distant with strangers, but he's different around Zaid (and his friends, but mostly Zaid). He's warmer, happier, and far kinder with him than he is with most others, and no one really understands why until they start dating years later.
