In 1971, Japanese publisher Hayakawa Bunko began to translate and print fantasy novels in Japan, including Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first Japanese edition of Conan the Barbarian, but also, notably, A. Merritt’s “Dweller in the Mirage.” For that reason, Merritt is considered a more central figure to Japanese fantasy, alongside Burroughs and Howard in stature.
Once considered the most famous fantasy writer in the world in the 50s alongside James Branch Cabell, Merritt is less remembered today in the West. His most famous fan is Gary Gygax, who always said Merritt was his favorite fantasy novelist.
