Asexual Awareness Week Fandom Challenge 2018

This is a tradition that started as part of Asexual Awareness Week back in 2014 that I’d like to see continue. Back in 2014 there were only a handful of canonical asexual characters, and none of them were in mainstream media. In the past four years we’ve seen that number grow, and characters enter more mainstream comics, books, and shows! By no means is asexual representation plentiful, but it is getting better. With that in mind this year I would like to continue to celebrate canonically asexual spectrum characters, as well as generating more content for asexual spectrum headcanons.

You’re welcome to respond to these prompts in any way you’d like, art, fic, edits, meta, etc. Feel free to interpret these prompts loosely and adapt this as you please. As in past years, the tag is #AAWFC

Sunday October 21st:  Post about canonically asexual spectrum characters, and/or what you would like to see in future asexual representation.

Monday October 22nd: For canonical or headcanoned asexual spectrum characters, what relationship do they have with their identity? Are they out and proud? How did they discover their identity?

Tuesday October 23rd: Post about characters that you headcanon as asexual.

Wednesday October 24th:  For canonical or headcanoned asexual spectrum characters, how does their identity affect their life and relationships?

Thursday October 25th: Post about characters that you headcanon as demisexual or grey-asexual.

Friday October 26th:  For canonical or headcanoned asexual spectrum characters, how do their other identities interact with their asexual spectrum identity? (i.e. romantic orientation, race, culture, gender, religion, etc.)

Saturday October 27th: Post about a romantic or queerplatonic/quasiplatonic relationship in fiction that you see as having one or more asexual spectrum partner(s).

Guys. This is SUCH A BIG DEAL!! As someone who’s aroace, this was so exciting to see pop up on my dash that I went and downloaded the game! And just the first chapter pretty much demolishes the argument that “a lack of romantic/sexual tension makes media boring”.

I’m super excited to play this game without out-of-character romantic interactions being forced onto me!

I’ve actually previously downloaded apps like this, (including Choices), only to delete them later, fed up with the few (if any) chances to play exciting stories platonically. If Pixelberry keeps making games like this, that will soon change!

Happy Asexual Awareness Week! I hope you, reader, are doing well.

Last month, I had the pleasure of sitting down with two activists in Japan to shoot this interview about a topic that is pretty dear to me; that is, about the current state of the asexual community in Japan. It goes without saying that everything that's said in the video is nothing but the experiences and opinions of three people and should NOT be mistaken as being representative of the experiences or opinions of everyone, but at the same time, who better to ask than two of the most active and dedicated people that I know in what is essentially the current hub for ace activity in Japan (Tokyo)?

Asexual Awareness Week

Asexual Awareness Week is so important. When I was a teenager just assumed I was heterosexual. I didn't even question it, I just tried to act like all my friends around boys even though I had no idea what they were on about when they called guys hot. I did things that made me and uncomfortable and unhappy just to fit in.

I didn't even hear the term asexual in that context until I was 20 and then lived in denial for so many years because there was just no representation and I was so scared it would mean I would be alone forever. It makes me so happy and hopeful when I see all the ace positivity because it means other people won't have to go through that junk.

Tl;dr- I went through loads of (self-imposed) crap for being ace. AAW makes me hope no-one else does.
