Chapter 10 of Fade Into You.
Pairing: Rita/Reader
Warnings: Fluff, light angst (maybe?), implied drinking, word crimes.
A/N: Picks up a week or so after chapter 9. More of a filler chapter to move the story along, and to lay the foundation for key moments further down the track. First appearance of Abbie in this series, and an introduction to the friendship. This was meant to be a short chapter, but ended up turning into a longer one. Not proofread or edited, so sorry in advance. Does it make sense and flow well? No, probably not.
Reader's Greenwich Village apartment (but creatively imagining that the bedroom is a little bigger and the window faces the street. Plus the bathroom is one room, not separated.)
Tumblr media
Throughout the week you found yourself trying to divert your attention away from her, occupying yourself with the mundane tasks of your life and work, busying yourself with anything that kept you focused, or at least kept you almost focused.
Yet she still managed to seep into your thoughts, uninvited but welcomed. You caught yourself daydreaming over moments shared together, and the possibility of future moments. She felt intoxicating, and a little dangerous.
It was late, and you knew you should be asleep, yet you found yourself teetering on the edge of insomnia. The hushed hum of the city outside your window wasn’t a comfort, and with every waking minute your thoughts circled back to her.
Now, with the clock ticking past midnight, you were sitting up against your headboard, bathed in the soft glow of your reading lamp. You were trying to distract yourself with a book, but the words were nothing but a jumble on the page, your thoughts were unrelenting, and refused to release their grip on Rita.
You remembered the way her eyes crinkled at the corners when she laughed, the way her lips turned when she smiled, the lilt in her voice when she talked passionately, and the tenderness in her gaze when she looked at you.
You entertained the idea, for only a moment, that you should call her, to see if she was still awake too. Before the faint snoring from the other room stopped you, Abbie had fallen asleep on your couch, and you knew Rita had plans with the other partners and associates from her new firm. You decided to let her come to you this weekend, testing her almost by not calling her or outwardly making plans with her, all to see if she’d come to you instead, if her unspoken feelings were as strong as yours seemed to be.
Tumblr media
You were drifting in and out of consciousness now, still sat up in bed, your eyes half-lidded, and your mind in a dreamy haze. Your thoughts were dancing on the blurred line between reality and fantasy, outside your window the distant hum of the city, and its revelry had merged into a soothing lullaby.
In the soft stillness of your room, you could almost swear you could hear a tapping noise, as if someone was quietly knocking against the glass of your window. Your mind chose to ignore it as your eyelids finally closed completely, and just as everything in your being stilled and you felt yourself drift off, you heard that sound again.
You cracked open an eye and turned to look at the window, rolling your neck to ease the tension. Then you saw it, in the same instance you heard that sound again. It looked like a shadow against the street lamp, maybe a bird flying past, it’s wings swooping and casting a silhouette against your window, regardless, whatever it was stole your attention.
You reefed open the window, and peeked your head out, glancing outwards first and then onto the street below you. Rita smiled up at you, dropping the pebbles gathered in her hand, and you couldn’t help but laugh as you held your finger out to her, telling her to wait a minute, while you snatched your keys off your bedside table. You threw them down to her, and quietly crept through your dark apartment, careful not to wake Abbie, as you waited for Rita in the doorway.
You held a finger up to your lips, indicating for her to be quiet, as she finished climbing the stairs, her heels scraped against the wooden floors and the sound echoed through the hallway.
“Who’s here?” she loudly whispered, her eyes narrowing as she looked past you and into your apartment.
She reached down, pulling off her jimmy choo pumps, she clasped them in her hand as she leant in to kiss you quickly. You could taste the whiskey on her tongue, and smell the faint air of smoke in her hair.
“Abbie fell asleep on the couch” you whispered when you both pulled away. “Come on” you grasped her palm, tenderly stroking the skin on the back of her hand with your thumb as she followed you through the kitchen and into your bedroom.
“How do you know Abbie?” she asked as you quietly shut your door, and she slipped off her coat. To anyone else it would have been framed as an innocent enough question, but you could tell by her infliction there was an edge of doubt and scrutiny hidden in her wording.
“Liz introduced the two of us last year.” you answered her, carefully gauging her reaction as you hung her coat in the wardrobe, before turning back around to unzip the back of her dress for her. “Something about needing friends in the office.” you shrugged as she slipped out of it.
“I see” there was a hint of sarcasm in her tone. You picked up the dress off the floor, carefully hanging it alongside her coat.
“There’s nothing going on there. Is that what you’re worried about?” you studied her for a moment, and despite the words that immediately flew out of her mouth, her features told a different story.
“I’m not worried” she hiccuped
“You’re cute when you’re jealous.” you murmured, a hint of a smile on your lips.
"So, how was your first week?" You came to stand in front of her as she perched on the edge of your bed. You rested your hands on either side of her face as she looked up at you, there was a hint of something in her eyes, she almost looked sad.
“What’s wrong baby?” you were worried you’d pushed it too far, that the playful teasing you were both so accustomed to, had pushed her over the edge. But as you stood in front of her, and gazed into her misty eyes, you knew there was something else simmering beneath the surface.
“Nothing. Nothing at all” she sighed and leaned in to you. She wrapped her arms around your waist and pressed her face into your stomach. You heard her take a deep breath and you ran your fingers through her hair before you leaned down to kiss the top of her head.
She leaned back and looked up at you and the light from the moon reflected back into her eyes, illuminating the depths of emotion hidden within them. Her usual spark that danced in her irises was dimmed, replaced by a sea of turbulent thoughts and unvoiced concerns.
The vulnerability her gaze held was palpable, like a silent plea for understanding in a world where she so often felt misunderstood. You leaned down and kissed her, slowly, leisurely, tenderly.
“Do you want to talk about it?” you whispered softly when you pulled apart. She shook her head and dropped her gaze to the floor, avoidant, and you could see her eyes welling up, as she fought within herself to hold back the tears threatening to fall.
“Do you think I made a mistake?” she murmured, her voice hesitant, and her eyes still not meeting yours.
“I think only you know the answer to that.” your heart sank as you answered her, and a knot formed in your stomach, you thought back on your conversation a few months prior, where you had berated her over lunch for leaving the District Attorney’s office.
You kept your voice even and your movements tender as you carefully chose your next words. “Remember what you said to me a few months ago? That feeling that you don't belong, that sinking feeling in your stomach, it all goes away. You need to give it all a chance… remember why you chose this job in the first place.”. She was silent, and in that quiet exchange you knew one thing to be of absolute truth; that she only needed you to be there. To be a steady presence, silently offering solace and comfort as she weathered this inner storm.
You slowly and delicately traced your fingers along her shoulders, undoing her bra and sliding it down off her arms. You neatly folded it along with the rest of her discarded clothing and her bag, setting them on top of your dresser before quietly opening the drawer, retrieving an old t-shirt for her.
When you turned back to her, she looked almost disappointed. The two of you sparsely wore any form of clothes when you shared a bed, skin pressed together instead.
“I know. I just don’t want to run the risk of Abbie walking in and seeing us naked” she giggled at that. “Giggles huh? Never thought I’d hear those.” you poked at her side as you slid the shirt over her head and thread her arms through “You must have had a great time with the associates.”
“It was fine.” she sighed, purposefully avoiding delving deeper, and you knew it was in that exact moment she decided to compartmentalise her feelings and shut you out. But instead of pushing her to open up, you reverted back to what was so familiar to you both, poking her with teases and playful jeers.
“Oh, just fine?” you arched a brow when she looked up at you “Your giggles and hiccups sing a different tune Calhoun”. She giggled again, and you smiled at the sound of it. “How much did you drink?”
“Enough.” She tried to sound sure of herself with austerity, but her hiccups betrayed her.
“Uh huh. I’m sure.” You started to walk away, your hand grasping at the handle of your bedroom door. Before she could even voice her question, you turned back, answering her. “Water.” you whispered “Ice?” she nodded her head and then looked away again
“Sorry” she said it so quietly, and it was so faint and distant, you almost hadn’t heard it.
“For what?” you tried to meet her eyes, and when she didn’t return them you bit your lip, mulling over whether or not you should say what you wanted to. “I like having you here, I like being around you, I like listening to you, I really like it. You just let that marinate for a minute while I’m gone.”
You returned a few moments later with two glasses of water, and a bottle of Advil tucked under your arm.
“You like having me around huh?” she smirked at you, and you tried to hide your smile at the colour returning to her face and voice, instead choosing to playfully roll your eyes.
“Are you going to remember this conversation in the morning?”
“Yes” she nodded as another hiccup left her.
“No you’re not.” you laughed softly. “Here, take two of these and drink some water.” you handed her the glass and the bottle. She fumbled with the cap for a minute before giving up, looking back up at you with a pout on her face. You fished out two pills and held them in your hand for her, giving her a stern but facetious look until she retrieved them from your palm.
Once she’d done as you said, you took the glass from her, placing it on her side of the bed before pulling back the covers. “Lay down, turn over.” She did as you said, getting under the covers as your arm wrapped around her side.
“I like being the big spoon.” she whined quietly.
“I know. Just let me look after you right now.”
“Mmm” she sighed, and you leant in, pressing a soft kiss to her cheek as you both sank back into the pillows, finding solace together as you both gradually succumbed to sleep.
Tumblr media
When Rita woke it was with the soft light of the morning dawn, and the sounds of the city coming back to life, she sucked in a breath as she tried to gather her surroundings. Her heart plummeted into her chest, and her head spun, she didn’t quite recognise where she was, and her recollection of the night before was foggy at best. She knew she’d gone out after work, and there was an associate who was being too friendly, the woman had left a lingering touch here and there, had watched her across the room, she hadn’t… had she?
She heard a mumble of something she couldn’t quite make out behind her, and slowly but tentatively turned her head. She let out a deep breath and sigh of relief, placing her trembling hand over her own rapidly pounding heart when she laid eyes on you. “Oh thank god” she whispered ever so quietly, into the still air of the room.
She turned you both over, wrapping her arm around you instead. You groaned as she moved you, stirring from your sleep as you rolled with her. “Better?” she smiled into the skin of your neck as she pressed a gentle kiss there.
“I like both.” you hummed into your pillow. “Advil and water… next to you.” everything came out in mumbles and sighs, and Rita struggled to understand you.“Abbie’s in the living room… put a shirt on.” You reached for her hand, raising it up to your lips and pressing a quick kiss to the soft skin.
“Thank you” she murmured into your ear, and you mumbled something in response she couldn’t quite make sense of as her eyes closed once more.
Tumblr media
You heard the creak of your bedroom door when it opened a few hours later, you stirred in your sleep momentarily, ignoring the light emitting through the window and the vague sounds that were spilling from the street below, choosing instead to try and return back into a peaceful slumber.
A few moments of blissful silence passed before your houseguest made her presence known, almost giving you a false sense of security; that she’d leave and let you fall back asleep.
“Well well well” Abbie declared from the doorframe, you could hear the surprise laced through her teasing. “Sleeping with the enemy I see”
“Go away” you groaned, and instead of leaving you both, as you so wished. She flung herself onto the bed, landing in between you and Rita, and you cried out in pain when her elbow collided with your ribcage, digging in before you rolled away.
“When did you get here?” Abbie turned to Rita, moving her hands behind her head, her elbows protruding out.
“Late last night” Rita half whispered, a futile attempt at being quiet.
“Shut up!” You groaned, pulling your pillow over your ears. “How do you have so much energy after drinking a quart of bourbon last night?”
“They breed us tough and resilient down south.” she turned up her accent, and you knew even through her satirization, she was deflecting and avoiding the conversation after last night, when she had poured her heart out over work and her relationship with Serena.
Abbie rested her hand on your shoulder, and for a moment you indulged in it, thinking it was Rita, you let out a soft sigh. Then you felt her cold fingers and immediately gripped her hand, throwing it off you dramatically.
“I made coffee” she said in a sing song voice next to your ear, and Rita watched on at the dynamic between the two of you, amused by your antics.
“Bring it in here then” Rita laughed, granting you a reprieve from Abbie’s antics.
You felt the bed dip, and waited to hear her feet patter out of your room before you raised your head, and turned over to face Rita.
“I’m sorry” you leaned in, kissing Rita chastely.
“Don’t be.” she shrugged, “I crashed your morning.”
“Yeah but I actually want you here” you kissed her again
“I can hear you!” Abbie chastised from the kitchen, forcing you to break apart. “Drink your coffee and be grateful” she returned, two mugs in hand, passing them to both of you before collecting her own from your bedside.
“If either of you spill coffee on my new bedspread I swear to god-” you started shaking your head before she interrupted.
“What? You’ll give us a spanking?” she laughed, and you went bright red. “I knew it!” “Let me guess, she -”
“Shut up!” you thrust your hand out, covering her mouth.
“We are talking about all of this later.” she exclaimed when you removed your hand, eyes wide, almost comically in shock.
The three of you sat there silently for a few moments, lost in thoughts and daydreams as you sipped from your mugs, listening to the city that was now roaring with life on the streets beneath your window.
“So where are we going for mimosas and breakfast?” Abbie was the first to pierce the silence.
“Bellinis and brunch” you corrected her.
“La Bonbonniere?”
“Oooh I love that place.” you exclaimed, agreeing with her suggestion.
“Absolutely not.” Rita shook her head.
“You snob.” you and Abbie swivelled and shouted at Rita simultaneously, surprised looks on both of your faces, mouths agape.
“Pastis?” Rita offered, and both you and Abbie blew raspberries with your mouths and turned your thumbs upside down. “Tough crowd.” Rita rolled her eyes as she sipped from her coffee mug. “Cafeteria?”
“Are you kidding?” Abbie practically scoffed at her, her face contorting as she glanced towards with almost comic disdain.
“Wait, I’ve got it…” you held your finger up in the air, feigning thought as furrowed your brow and your eyes creased. “What about… La Bonbonniere?”
“Perfect.” Abbie agreed. “All those in favour.” and both of you raised your hands immediately, leaving Rita with her mouth wide open looking back and forth between the two of you.
“What?!” she exclaimed, almost shrieking in surprise and equal annoyance.
“Overruled” Abbie shouted as she jumped out of your bed.
“This is absolute bull-” you kissed her before she could finish her sentence. And she brushed the hair out of your face with the tips of her fingers when you both pulled away
“We’ll get bellinis on the way.” you shrugged, tumbling out of bed, smacking her bare leg on your way. “Come on, up and at ‘em.” you clapped your hands together before picking out a set of clothes for her to change into.
Tumblr media
Rita walked ahead of you, stopping in at the cafe entrance, inquiring if they had an open table for the three of you, and you knew she was secretly harbouring hope that they didn’t, so you’d be forced to instead visit one of her choices.
You almost laughed at how her mind worked as you watched the interaction take place with the host. It was then that Abbie tugged on your arm, pulling you from your thought as you both stopped a few yards behind Rita.
“How long has that been going on?” she nodded in Rita’s direction, carefully observing you as you spoke. Trying to discern any and all truths in your words and mannerisms.
“Couple of months” you shrugged, a lopsided grin plastered on your face.
“Have you disclosed?” She changed her tone, becoming almost serious with concern as the cogs in her mind turned, envisioning every scenario of an assistant district attorney’s bosses finding out that they were dating their opposing counsel.
It wasn’t unheard of or uncommon, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t highly frowned upon, especially when it was undisclosed. It would be disastrous if the two of you were to go up against one another in a trial, and would allow any verdict or plea to be vacated, calling your entire bureau into question.
It was in that moment that Rita turned her head to look at you, the late morning sun that was so prominent and bright. It bathed the contours of her face, creating a radiant halo around her, as a lazy smile crept up her cheeks. She could tell you were talking about her, and you couldn't help but return her smile. All semblance of what Abbie had said, or left unsaid, faded away, and for that brief sun-kissed moment, everything stood still as you shared a wordless connection.
Abbie looked between the two of you, feeling as though she was almost intruding on what seemed such an intimate moment. “Oh you’re in so much trouble” she whistled
“I know.” She was right, even with her unspoken words, you knew that much. But you also knew that there was no one else you’d rather be in trouble with.

from the dark with you above me chapter 9
Jack’s eyes twinkled. “How romantic,” he said.
ao3
As much as she wanted to get the apology out, Abbie did what was good for her. She gave Serena free rein, submitting, wordlessly. Serena pulled at the bottom of her shirt and Abbie lifted it over her head. Serena reached behind her back and Abbie arched off the bed to let her undo the clasp of her bra. Serena didn’t even have to touch her to get her pants, underwear off, just gesture to them. Serena knelt above fully clothed, in a red dress Abbie found irresistibly sexy, and ran her hand from her collarbone to her hip. Her breath grew ragged, desperate.
“Ugh, you’re fucking beautiful, it’s infuriating,” she said. Abbie didn’t reply, remembering what she’d been asked to do. Abbie squirmed. “Want something?” she asked. Abbie nodded. “Too bad you can’t tell me what.”
This side of Serena was unlike anything she’d ever seen before from her. It was hot, exciting to see her take charge like that, to see her enjoy it.
“You’re okay?” She said, checking in. Abbie nodded. “You can answer that,” she clarified.
“Yes, God,” said Abbie, “more than.”
“Good,” said Serena. “Tell me if that changes.” She kissed her again. Her tongue danced against Abbie’s, her fingers scratched lightly at her ribs. Abbie’s skin erupted in goosebumps. She let out a moan when she pushed her legs apart and placed her hand there, moving slowly against her. Serena sighed contentedly.
“You like this a lot,” she said, “I like it too.”
Serena kissed down her body. Abbie saw stars.
---
Serena, after quite a long time, finally having had her fill, gave Abbie a final kiss that she was too exhausted to do much to return.
“How are you doing?” she asked casually, like she hadn’t spent the last few hours utterly undoing her.
“God, Serena,” Abbie breathed, “fucking, I don’t know.” Serena purred, satisfied.
“Let me get you some water,” she said. Abbie lay there and caught her breath.
“Thanks,” Abbie said, sitting up, taking the glass from her. She drank it quickly. Serena joined her, laying back. Abbie rose, looking for her discarded clothing strewn about the room.
“What are you doing?” Serena asked amusedly.
“Getting dressed?” Abbie said.
“Stay here,” she said. “How terrible would I be if I made you leave after that.”
Abbie’s cheeks got hot. “I- I can--” she said, but Serena looked at her insistently. “Okay,” she said, sitting back down. She was asleep before she could think about anything else.
---
Alex entered the kitchen, followed by Olivia. Serena had given Abbie some shorts and a t-shirt, and she was making them coffee. Abbie had offered to leave as soon as she woke up, but Serena, for some reason, still didn’t want her to go. Abbie couldn’t imagine why, after what she’d done, and in the absence of an apology, which Serena still wasn’t letting her give.
“Hi?” Alex said, after staring at the two of them for a moment.
“Hi,” said Serena, eerily chipper. “I made enough for everybody.” She poured four cups of coffee. Alex was not trying to hide her feelings. Abbie noticed hostility, but mostly confusion.
“Hey,” said Olivia, acknowledging her. When they all had their coffees, they stood in a circle sipping silently. Alex glowered at her.
“How was everyone’s night?” Olivia broke the silence.
“Good,” said Abbie, “thanks.” When the coffee was drained, Serena piped up.
“Anybody want brunch?”
---
They walked down the street to a corner bakery that did an excellent weekend brunch service, that somehow never had a line. Eggs and toast for Serena, pancakes for Olivia, a BLT for Alex, and avocado toast for Abbie.
Abbie was on edge. Serena was acting as though the situation they were in was completely normal. Alex seemed angry-- Olivia must have been in on everything, because she looked confused.
“Okay, what the hell is going on here,” Alex gave in. Serena chewed her toast. Abbie took a sip of orange juice. “Abbie? Serena?”
“What do you mean, Alex? We’re just out to brunch,” she said with a smile. Abbie was getting seriously weirded out.
“Oh my God, Ser,” she said. “Really?” Alex looked at Abbie then, demanding an explanation.
“I’m just here,” she said, abdicating responsibility. She hadn’t been in charge since buying Serena that drink.
“Is anybody going to loop me in?” Olivia asked.
“These two were sleeping together for a month and then Abbie dropped Serena out of the blue, and now apparently everything is hunky dory.”
Serena looked more confused than Olivia did earlier. “Hunky dory?” She said.
“I mean was there an apology? Did you two kiss and make up?”
“We kissed,” said Serena. She dug into her second egg. Abbie did not offer any further explanation.
“Okay,” said Alex, giving up, “you two are insane.”
Olivia, blessedly, changed the topic. “You ran track in college?”
----
Abbie lathered her hair, taking in the scent of lavender in the hot water. She thought about Serena. Serena, Serena, Serena. Before that morning, Abbie had only wanted to apologize to her, and leave everything at that. But something else had been gnawing at her since that glass of water, and those pleading eyes asking her to stay. She rinsed the shampoo and ran the conditioner through her hair. She plunged her face into the stream of the shower, breathing out deeply.
How she was still stuck on this woman, she couldn’t figure out.
She hadn’t felt this way about anybody since Toni.
Oh.
She hadn’t felt this way about anyone but Toni.
---
“So she fucked your brains out and then you went to brunch?” Lisa said.
“Yes,” said Abbie, “with Alex and her girlfriend. And she didn’t let me apologize.”
“What do you mean,” said Elle?
“Well she didn’t let me talk while we were having sex--”
“Hot,” said Lisa. Elle gave her a mischievous smile.
“Yeah,” Abbie continued, “and then in the morning she kept cutting me off when I tried to talk about it.”
“Weird,” said Elle.
“I know,” Abbie said, “And she was almost creepily happy the whole time. I thought she was gonna snap.”
“Maybe she already did,” said Lisa. “Don’t be in the same room as her and knives.”
“Funny,” said Abbie. She contemplated. “What do I do?” She asked.
“What do you want?” Said Elle. Abbie thought about the answer for far less time than she would’ve thought.
“I want to be with her,” she said.
“Then you have to make her listen to you,” said Elle. “That’s how you’ll find out if she wants the same thing as you.
“Or you could just keep having sex and see what happens,” said Lisa.
“Babe,” said Elle, “give her good advice for once.”
“Fine,” said Lisa. “Send her flowers, that’s what I’d do.”
Huh. Lisa was capable of being thoughtful.
---
“And where have you been?” Jack asked Abbie, who was returning from a lunch that went long.
“Flowers R Us,” said Abbie.
“Oh,” said Jack, intrigued. “Why?”
“For Serena,” she said.
“For Serena,” Jack repeated, “Did you two,”
“Not quite, that’s what the flowers are for.”
Jack’s eyes twinkled. “How romantic,” he said.
“I owe her at least that much,” Abbie said.
“I’m glad you two are getting along. It’s not easy.”
“No,” said Abbie, and felt the truth of his statement acutely. “No it isn’t.”
---
Abbie went home that day a little earlier than usual. The flowers were set to be delivered at 6pm, the latest the shop would do deliveries. She had enlisted Tracey (who had been overjoyed) to get Serena home by then. She paced around her apartment restless. She tried to occupy herself with some work she took home, then with TV and sudoku, but nothing kept her from thinking every noise was a knock at the door or a call on her cell. She went over the note she’d left, second-guessing the lack of information on it.
She jumped up when the knock did come.
She opened the door to find three young men in crisp white button downs and dress pants.
“Hi, I’m Elder Johnson, this is Elder Dylan, and Elder Harold, do you have a second?”
“I’m a lesbian,” she said, and closed the door on them.
Five minutes later, though, another knock came. Her heart pounded when she went to open the door, each step feeling fateful. Serena stood on her stoop with a rose in her hand.
“I’m here,” Serena said quietly.
“You came,” Abbie said. Serena’s beauty was dazzling.
“You asked.” Abbie couldn’t believe her fortune. “Are you going to invite me in?” Serena asked.
Abbie blushed, “Yes, I, sorry,” she said. She stepped aside to let Serena in.
“I like my flowers,” Serena said with a shy smile. Serena liked her flowers!
“I’m so glad,” said Abbie. “I liked sending them to you.” Serena’s smile widened.
“So,” she said, “what was I keeping you from saying the other day?”
“I was going to say, ‘I’m sorry.’ I’m saying I’m sorry. For how I treated you, for how I broke things off, for how I didn’t give us a fair shot.”
“That,” said Serena, “That means a lot.” Abbie took a deep breath, steadying her nerves. This was the scary part.
“And now,” she said and started to trail off. “I’m telling you that I want to be with you. More than I’ve wanted anything in years.”
“I--” Serena said, “what changed?”
“I’m not scared anymore,” Abbie said, confident now.
“I scared you?” Serena asked.
“Not you,” Abbie said, cursing herself for her phrasing, “my feelings. I haven’t felt the way I feel about you for anybody but Toni.”
“Toni?” Serena asked, then it dawned on her. “Toni Ricci,” she said. Tears threatened to fall, and Abbie gave in, a few of them dropping.
“Sorry,” she said.
“No,” said Serena. “I didn’t know, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Abbie said, “I realized that if I felt that way for you, I really, really needed to listen to it.” Serena had been fidgeting with the rose the whole time they talked, but now her hands stilled. She looked right into Abbie’s eyes when she said,
“I want you too, Abbie.” Abbie felt a relieved, ecstatic, overwhelming warmth fill her. “But, you can’t do anything like that again.”
“I promise,” said Abbie.
Serena kissed her like it was the first time.
When they came up for breath (at the very last minute they could), Abbie could finally ask: “Okay, what was up with Saturday morning?” Serena laughed her bright laugh that Abbie was so fond of.
“I so enjoyed Friday night,” she said, “I was trying not to scare you away.”
Abbie squeezed her hand. “Well, Lisa thinks that you’re planning to murder me.”
“Tell Lisa you’re in good hands,” said Serena. Abbie kissed her again, slow and gentle, suggestive, and made quick work of the buttons on her coat, shrugging it off her shoulders. Serena stepped out of her boots.
When they made it to Abbie’s bed, she pulled back just enough to say, “Hey Serena?”
“Hm?” she responded,
“Can I take you out to dinner?”
Serena actually squealed.
“Of course you can, Abbie.”

Law and Order Headcanons
Ben and Paul are definitely dating before the show aired. Paul definitely proposes on one knee. How? He told me.
Mike and Rey ARE definitely dating. When Rey told his wife , Deborah about his infidelity and his sexuality (he used to be curious with his sexuality right now, he's bisexual), she decided not to divorce but rather separate. They agreed on co-parenting their kids. After the separation, Deborah told him that she's pansexual. Being a good ex-husband, he supports her. (Rant: How come there's no Rey Curtis slash fanfiction?)
I bet you a dollar that Mike looks good in women's clothes. He used to put make-up on for plays. Same thing for an outfit. (Maybe he can use it for undercover? This may spaked an fanfiction idea...)
Lennie DEFINITELY sings in private. (Thanks to Jerry Orbach for telling me this)
Paul takes Ben out to Europe for their honeymoon.
Jack and Ben are law besties. They never met each other in real life but they mail each other every other week.
Anita can tell you her family stories if they're all burnout for the cases.
Phil listens to opera. (A homage to Paul Sorvino, who passed away July 25th, 2022 due to natural causes)
Ed's famous twin sister, Erica brings food and snacks to detectives and lawyers. She also helps the cases if they need more help. She's good at memory (regonize people and such). She also brings her best friend, Lauren for help as needed.
Ben and Paul adopt children when they're married.
Ed, Mike, Rey, and Paul are the best bros to count on when you are feeling down. Lennie is also part of it.
BONUSES:
Everybody on the show is gay. Dick Wolf told me. He said the following:
Ben, Paul, Mike, Lennie, Abbie, Jamie, and Jack are all bisexual.
Jack is also trans.
Claire and Anita are clearly pansexual.
Ed is omnisexual.
Arthur and Adam are dating. #oldDAs
That's all, folks.
If there's anything that you want me to add or make a new one, dm me!
Maybe I should do a sexy version?

L&O Fic Recs (Mostly Kincoy)
Notes:
Fics are listed in no particular order outside of website specifications
Most of these fics are Claire/Jack, but not all (there’s also character-centric fics, some femslash, at least one niche rarepair, etc.)
If you read, be sure to reblog (Tumblr), kudos (AO3), and leave a kind comment (all platforms)!
The summaries for the majority of these fics are the same as were posted with the story; for the one or two that had particularly vague summaries or no summary at all, I provided a sentence
Fics are complete unless stated otherwise
I may update this list occasionally in the future :)
Feel free to reblog with your own additions!
Tumblr:
Red and Pink, by fighterkimburgess; Claire/Jack, oneshot, unrated, 1.4k.
It’s Valentine’s Day 1996, and Claire Kincaid is making big decisions.
you’re too tall, by serenasoutherlyns; Claire/Jack, oneshot, unrated, 210 words.
Claire looks up at Jack as she says it, her eyelashes fluttering, her hand coming to grasp at his tie, watching with satisfaction as his eyes darken.
AO3:
Mine Eyes Dazzle, by GilShalos1; Claire/Jack, four fics, ratings include G, T, and E, 38.4k total.
A series of stories all set within the same fanon: Jack and Claire, and Jack after Claire.
lovers lost in time, by lonely_is_so_lonely_alone; Claire/Jack, 13 chapters, rated G, 22.2k.
She knew it was crossing a line – crashing through a boundary they had set themselves in those first, slow, weeks.
Her head screamed at her. Not again. Not again. Not again.
– tracing the relationship between Claire and Jack, from their first kiss to their last.
it was more than worth it, by faerialchemist (me!); Claire/Jack, 2 chapters, rated T, 32k.
Claire shook her head, lacing their fingers together. “How about we lay down some ground rules?”
Jack chuckled. “Rules, huh?”
“Yes.” A smirk twitched at her lips. “If you come within six inches of my personal space in the office, I have permission to taze you.”
(Or: 7 times people found out about Jack and Claire’s relationship + 1 time people were told.)
love in rushes, by serenaclaires; Claire/Jack (ft. a smattering of other Claire pairings, including Margot/Claire), oneshot, rated T, 500 words.
Claire kisses him like he might disappear.
Takeout Lives (or, The Turkey Effect), by missanotherboat; Claire & Jack & Adam, oneshot, rated G, 2.2k.
“Most people wait until Christmas to let it flow – memories, guilt, joy, pain – but I should have known you wouldn’t be caught dead in a conventional depression.”
the lock that kept it dark, by serenaclaires; Alexandra & Jack, Abbie & Jack, Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated M, 5.3k.
The first few times, it’s the smallest glimpses. A flash of dark brunette in the back of a courtroom that is gone as soon as he sees it.
passionately, i’d say, by serenaclaires; Claire/Jack, one chapter, rated T, 1.3k. Ongoing.
Jacqueline “Man-eater” McCoy, Claire recalls the sexist but accurate nickname among the many the new EADA had acquired.
match point, by faerialchemist (me!); Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated T, 2.9k.
Jack raised an eyebrow. “Claire, Adam wants us to be in the office at 7 tomorrow.”
Claire bit back another sigh. “I’m well aware, Jack, but like you said—my car isn’t going anywhere right now. Not without a tow truck.”
“Then let me take you home.”
Claire stiffened, her traitorous heart skipping a beat at his suggestion. “I’m sorry?”
won’t you hang a picture?, by faerialchemist (me!); Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated T, 3.6k.
She watched in silence how his toned back, his firm shoulders rose and fell with each slow breath he took, the consequential snores causing her to bite her tongue to hold back a laugh. If only the court could see him now—the fearless, fiery Jack McCoy sleeping on his stomach with one hand under his pillow and snoring like a disgruntled cat.
Maybe it was selfish, maybe it was childish, but Claire reveled in the fact that this sight was one reserved solely for her.
(Or: It’s 3 AM, and Claire Kincaid finds herself thinking about Jack McCoy.)
come on, babe (why don’t we paint the town?), by faerialchemist (me!); Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated T, 2.9k. Part 1 of and all that jazz.
“Sounds lovely,” Jack said. He started commenting about the color, some stupid, quippy remark, no doubt, but Claire was only half-listening as she stood to slowly unzip her pencil skirt.
Based on the way Jack cut himself off with an awkward cough halfway through his sentence, Claire had a feeling her phone had picked up the sound just fine.
(Or: Claire gets ready for a night out. Jack listens in.)
find a flask (we’re playing fast and loose), by faerialchemist (me!); Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated T, 5k. Part 2 of and all that jazz.
Of course, Jack’s age hadn’t stopped a few beautiful young women—and one handsome young man—from approaching him with a wink and a casual hand trailing across his chest. One girl had curly dark hair and was even wearing a short red dress.
But none of them were Claire, and therein lay the problem.
(Or: Jack tries to find Claire on her night out. Easier said than done.)
come on, babe (we’re gonna brush the sky), by faerialchemist (me!); Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated T, 2.7k. Part 3 of and all that jazz.
Wincing at the stiffness of her shoulders and the thunder that continued to boom against the inside of her skull, Claire reached over to retrieve the folded paper.
It was a note, she realized upon closer inspection, a note scribbled in very familiar cursive. Its message was concise: You’ll need these.
Right.
Jack.
(Or: Claire wakes up after a wild night out. Jack is there, too.)
With Mechanical Assistance, by ememmyemmers; Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated G, 1.5k.
Too scared of his reputation as a man who sleeps with his assistants, Jack McCoy has hidden his growing feelings for Claire Kincaid for months. But one late night ride in the office’s ancient elevators might change it all…
the saviours, by lonely_is_so_lonely_alone. Claire/Jack, Jack & Jamie, oneshot, rated T, 5.4k.
After Jamie’s disciplinary hearing at the end of Justice, she and Jack go back to the office for a drink.
Later, Abbie crashes the party.
And as always, things turn back to Claire, the ghost in the walls.
– Coda to 10x05, Justice
between friends, by lonely_is_so_lonely_alone. Claire/Jack, Jack & Jamie, oneshot, rated G, 2.9k.
After Jack walks out of the Grand Jury in 9x14, a old friend comes to visit him in DC
– Or Jack and Jamie talk about what pushed him over the edge.
three’s a crowd, by lonely_is_so_lonely_alone. Claire/Jack, Jack & Jamie, oneshot, rated T, 2.8k.
Jack and Jamie talk about the elephant in the room.
– post ep for Under the Influence (8x11)
belief, by lonely_is_so_lonely_alone. Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated T, 7.1k.
He doesn’t believe in ghosts. Nope. Not at all. He is Jack McCoy, rational down to cynical. He’s seen all the world can offer, right under the floorboards of humanity and back out. He doesn’t believe in ghosts but – but – there’s a ghost sitting on the edge of his desk when he gets back from court.
– Every time Jack McCoy loses an ADA, there’s a familiar face there to talk about why.
Principessa, by listentothewordsyousay. Claire/Jack, four chapters, rated T, 1.2k. Ongoing.
Kneeling beside her hospital bed, he had the sudden, deranged recollection of the prince kneeling beside Snow White’s bed. Some Prince Charming he was, he thought bitterly.
Mistletoe, by listentothewordsyousay. Claire/Jack, two chapters, rated T, 558 words. Ongoing.
He stood directly behind her at the bar, just close enough for him to feel her shiver when he spoke softly into the curve of her shoulder. ‘I like the dress.’
A Dinner in Hot Pursuit, by listentothewordsyousay. Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated T, 599 words.
‘You’re wondering what sort of man I am, too.’
Aftermath, by GilShalos1. Claire/Jack, 10 chapters, rated T, 998 words.
Ten drabbles – a different take on “Aftershock”
In Limine, by GilShalos1. Claire/Jack, 10 chapters, rated T, 7.6k.
What if fanfic and reruns are the afterlife for dead TV characters? Claire Kincaid discovers that her life isn’t what she assumed it to be. But is there anything she can do about it now?
A Bad Idea, by HandwithQuill. Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated G, 559 words.
Jack and Claire in the office on the night they become a couple.
Against All Good Advice, by castles. Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated G, 754 words.
Five Season 5 snapshots.
De Jure, by VelvetMouse. Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated T, 1.3k.
This job got more interesting all the time.
White Knight, by GilShalos1. Jack & OC, 16 chapters, rated T, 7.9k.
Jack McCoy pays attention to the people he works with, especially the women… Even those who don’t want to be noticed.
Set early in the 24 years McCoy worked in the DA’s Office before his first appearance in “Second Opinion.”
Casual, by shonn. Abbie/Serena, oneshot, rated G, 217 words.
When opposites attract.
Case Files, by eastberlin. Abbie/Toni, oneshot, rated G, 247 words.
Abbie is a neat freak. Toni, not so much.
city glacier, by kimaracretak. Claire/Jack, oneshot, rated T, 3.5k. Recommended by @sit-drink-smile!
There’s a comfort to the ritual, Claire on the couch with case files, him on the phone, even the open bottle. All they need is Adam to poke his head in the door and scold them for still being around this late, and it’ll be just like it was before. But they’ve outlasted him tonight, and the building’s late-night quiet seems empty.
[ On survival, grief, and vampirism. ]
all i need is a taste, by faerialchemist (me!). Margot/Claire, oneshot, rated T, 1.4k.
Claire hums in agreement, undoing another two of Margot’s buttons. “Even I could kiss you better than—better than what’s-his-face, I bet.”
It isn’t until Margot’s back stiffens beneath her touch that Claire realizes what sequence of words has left her mouth.
