Oddworld: The Promised Neverland homage (pt 3)

Yet another in my latest little series of homages…my god these are fun to do! At the rate I’m going I’ll have enough to put together a little animatic to the tune of “Identity,” haha!

This one was definitely the most challenging to try to compose, but the most fun to play with. While I knew putting Molluck where Isabella originally sat would bring a more cynical tone to the piece, I wasn’t expecting to truly appreciate how damn oppressive a figure he can be. Using the smoke in place of shadow was intentional; I wanted the Mudokons to come across as generic and faceless as the Glukkons no doubt see them, but also lean into the double meaning of how the brew is designed to fog up their minds and keep them under control.

Also, Procreate’s light pens are so much fun to play with!

what are y’alls opinions on Sleeches from Soulstorm?

While I did like Soulstorm for what it was despite its problems… I was really mixed about the Sleeches…

The Sleeches were cool on their own… however I did NOT like them as a Fleech replacement, not at all! Though it could just be my nostalgia making me think otherwise however.

While it was cool to see a new Oddworld creature- The mechanics were very cliche in comparison to the Fleeches. Not saying the Sleeches and their mechanics where bad by any means, just that the “light scares away the enemy in the dark” mechanic is a VERY overused trope in games imo (even if it was a first-time use in the Oddworld games).

With Fleeches however, you had to be extremely quiet in order not to wake them; anything that would make the slightest noise could wake them. Not only that, but you then would have to be incredibly quick on your feet to escape them when you inevitably do. HOWEVER what’s cool is that sometimes you are able to avoid getting attacked altogether if you are quiet enough!

I will say that I do like the theory of Sleeches being related to Fleeches. However I don’t really like the Sleeches’ round design? Idk how to explain it. The design is fine on its own and its spherical body IS honestly consistent with Oddworld’s small creatures… however I just (again) don’t like it as a REPLACEMENT for the Fleeches and it just doesn’t have the same vibe.

I’m saying this because I had the idea to redesign and semi-rewrite them!

I would make them a subspecies of the Fleech (so the name would be kept). Fleeches canonically were pets released into the wild, causing major damage to the habitats they’d enter. The Sleeches I’d imagine would be an evolved subspecies of those escaped pets that chose to live in the darkness (that or they are the evolved result of terrible owners dumping their pet Fleeches into the depths)

Inside the office of Fumito Ueda

This is a sequel of sorts to a post of mine from last year where I spotted a number of telling items on Fumito Ueda's office shelves, while more closely inspecting a picture from the Material Book included with the Japanese First Limited Edition of Hitokui no Ōwashi Trico. I'm calling this harmless voyeurism, coming as it does from someone who is exceedingly interested in this author and his work and appreciates the difficulty of such self-imposed challenges.

This new post will be looking more carefully at a this page size picture from The World of Fumito Ueda, a book Kadokawa released earlier this year, from which some detail can be extracted. The photo is stylized with a checkered transparency which makes this exercise substantially more difficult. Should you recognize any item I failed to identify, I ask that you use the comment box so I may improve this entry.

This is a rather pristine-looking 1976 Nintendo Kôsenjû Duck Hunt, a sophisticated light gun toy from Yokoi's R&D department consisting of a battery-powered projector and a plastic rifle whose objective was for the player to shoot at the duck whenever it appeared on the wall.

To the left is Nintendo's Custom Gunman toy, also designed by Gunpei Yokoi in 1976, consisting of a plastic cowboy figure with a receptor in its chest at which the player needed to aim with precision in order to score.

I remember reading about these in Gorges' L'Histoire de Nintendo. Both may have been toys that Ueda had as a child, but this is mere speculation from my end.

Two PSP games stored on this shelf: Metal Gear Acid (2004) and Lemmings (2006), a remake of a game which was highly influential to him, as he as indicated on multiple occasions. In the previous post I wrote, I spotted a big box copy of the original game.

An unexpected find here: a DVD entitled The Animal Motion Show, a visual library meant as reference for artists containing thousands of video clips animals in motion, no doubt very useful in key framing Toriko's unique animations.

A pair of books stand out to me and confirm many of my long-held suspicions on Ueda's influences: Hyperion's From Myst to Riven hardcover from 1997; and the 1974 Dover Publications' Doré Bible Illustrations.

The US and European versions of Shadow of the Colossus sitting beside Saints Seinaru Mamono, the Japanese edition of the Sony Cambridge Studio 2004 game, Primal.

More books, including the 2014 volume The Birth of Rockin' Jelly Beans. If you are not familiar with this reference, he is a Japanese lowbrow erotica artist who wears a mask in public appearances and whose identity remains unknown to this day.

Tucked in a lower shelf are the Gameboy Color edition of Prince of Persia, the Japanese version of Abe's Exodus (ABE '99) for the Playstation and the Wonderswan version of Toshio Iwai's Tenori-On.

Last but not least, here is the the Limited Run Games Limited 20th Anniversary Edition of Another World (either the PS4 or the PSVita edition, it's impossible to tell).

fortnight 8/10 - this is so ex coded holy “i love you and it’s ruining my life” literally of her relationships at some point, wow. i will say that post is an interesting collab for this type of song but i don’t hate it

the tortured poets department 6/10 - i liked the bridge (i think that’s what it is) the best. lyrically it’s good but not my fave and saying that ab the title track i hope doesn’t get me yelled at by anyone

overall, is a lyrically beautiful album. there’s so much emotion in the music and her delivery. her imagery is so beautiful as always. personally, i won’t say i love it but it is so so impactful. releasing 31 songs in one project is unheard of so i tip my hat to her ability to tell these stories with such grace and eloquence through such a marathon of an album. i like that you can hear bits of her previous albums in some of the songs and it is a very mature project imo. you can tell how much this meant to her and how much of herself she’s poured out. its an overall ~7.8/10 for me but i would recommend everyone to give it a listen

Anyway... These are some Scrab headcanons I have that are random and don't matter to the Oddworld lore... I have them because I'm just that much of a nerd with Speculative Biology LOL!

-Scrab Headcanons-

-All behaviors I headcanon Scrabs acting like are partly inspired by animals like hyenas, birds of prey, terror birds (prehistoric), elephants, lions, tigers, and meerkats (fun fact! meerkats are the most homicidal animal in the world believe it or not!). To make things unique considering Oddworld is a different planet, I imagine female Scrabs being bigger and more aggressive than the males (like hyenas and meerkats), with them possessing longer beaks yet also having slightly less color than the males (will explain why further down).

-Considering on the Wiki, it states Scrabs are only hyper aggressive to Scrabs outside their pack. It makes a lot of sense honestly... It explains why they murder each other in Abe's Odyssey, Exodus, and New N' Tasty; while in Munch's Odyssey they are seen in large groups... However it's still pretty contradictory to what we are shown and told if you ask me. So, to make Scrabs different to Paramites (because Paramites are known for their pack structure and mechanic behavior-wise) I think I came up with an idea explaining the change in behavior in Munch's Odyssey!

-As I stated above, I imagine the males and females being different. To add to that, I headcanon (like elephants, just reverse the sexes) males sticking together in a group raising/protecting the babies. For males, they have brighter reds and yellows than the females in order to impress them for mating. In mating season, the pack will decrease by almost half as most males will leave when hearing the female's mating call. By the end of the season, there are only three outcomes; males returning with their newly hatched offspring (I headcanon Scrabs laying eggs), males returning with no offspring as a result of the babies dying, or males not returning at all due to them failing to impress the female. Although male Scrabs are less aggressive, they are still hyper aggressive to any of those they consider a threat or as food. Although female Scrabs are solitary and hyper aggressive, male Scrabs are quite social, but ONLY to those in their pack. They are seen often grooming eachother, sharing food, and some males are even seen caring for babies in the pack when another male is the father!

-For females, once they become of age, they will leave the Scrab pack and become purely solitary. The females while living their solitary lives will fight any Scrab they encounter to the death unless the female recognizes the sent of their opposer as one she has previously mated with (similar to a male tiger) or recognizes the sent as one who is related to her. If the female recognizes the other Scrab as one she is related to or previously mated with, she will affectionately groom them and, if they are lucky, hunt food for them (once again like a male tiger) until she goes back on her way. The female Scrabs are also the ones that initiate the mating call! Once the male appears, he will begin his mating dance. If the male fails to impress her, she will kill and eat him (like most bugs); However, if he succeeds, she will not only mate with him, but will stay around with him until she lays her eggs. Once she lays her eggs, she will leave to resume her solitary life, and the male is left to protect and tend to the eggs alone until they hatch. Once they hatch, he will lead them back to the pack (like a lioness). He is able to track them down by following the sent trail.

-Scrabs (like birds of prey) will not hesitate to eat their prey alive. Like prehistoric terror birds, they will use their beak to inflict incredible damage. Scrabs can also impale their victims with their beaks as if Scrabs weren't brutal enough.

-They may be blind, but they can "see" their surroundings very well by sensing vibrations in their claws and smelling using incredibly powerful sent glands!

-(These are canon facts, but it concerns their behavior so I'm adding it still) Scrabs are incredibly fast and can jump far. Once they kill their prey (or other Scrabs) they will often "dance" on their body... Possibly to make it easier to tear apart and eat. Sometimes when attacking, they may use their claws to pierce their prey as well!

And there we go! My Scrab headcanons! As you can tell, these are PURELY just headcanons! I'm a huge Speculative Biology nerd and I just COULDN'T pass up the opportunity to come up with behavior ideas for my favorite Oddworld creature!

If this does well (though I'm not expecting it to, it's just random thoughts and ideas lol) I might do the same thing here but with the Paramites next time!

Synopsis:

ERIS MATTHEWS thought nothing when her parents and brother wound up sick after their beach trip, until they woke with red-rimmed eyes and a thirst for blood. Her blood. RHYS GREY and their friend, CASHMERE MONI, had almost been too late to save her, although they came with a warning. The Exodus is leaving now, and if she Eris wanted to leave, she needed to leave with them.

So, they fled, into the stars to a supposed safe haven. Instead of the salvation they hoped to find, the planet is riddled with demons and unanswered questions.

An unimaginable landscape meets games of secrets, betrayal, a past they cannot escape, but most importantly; survival.

Prometheus’ Fate in Mythology

The final mention of Prometheus in mythology, is when Heracles (the Demigod son of Zeus) seeks the Golden Apples as one of his Twelve Labours. In the process of completing that task, Heracles slaughters the eagle tormenting Prometheus and frees him from his chains. During this time, Prometheus provides Heracles with valuable insight and knowledge to complete his task of obtaining the Golden Apples. After the end of that journey, Prometheus is pardoned and allowed his freedom on a condition;  he is to forever wear a shackle as a reminder of his past transgressions against the gods (siding with humanity over his god-kin). Given the absence of further appearances in subsequent myths, it is generally taken that he distanced himself from the affairs of the gods...as well as that of humans. 

(He disappeared into the world, never going back to be with the god-kin or providing them advice when calamity or fate finds itself on their doorstep; and is never mentioned rendering further assistance or taking any action to provide for or shelter humanity from Fate or the whims of the gods.)

As mentioned before: the original punishment was having his liver (where the seat of emotion was believed to be) pecked out daily. It essentially, is a curse of eternal hopelessness; without emotion--without the ability to have desire or motivation-- the belief of Hope (Elpis) and its power to grant respite from suffering will not present itself. [This more or less parallels with the post Judgment Day Legion of X development arc + Sins of Sinister Nightcrawlers + Sons of X] 

But in all fairness, from what can be inferred of Prometheus--perhaps the greater punishment for him, is obtaining freedom only to see the humans and the world he loved + sacrificed so much for be nothing more than slaves to Fate...and the gods. 

He had taken steps to prevent slavish devotion at the expense of human life from happening; but it happened all the same, with humans thinking that if they offered more than they should--they would then win the favour of the gods, and have an easy life. Forgetting that the gods did not care about their existence beyond the sustained cycle of belief, control and power that came with mindless worship. [Just look at Exodus, Mother Righteous, and even Prof X; the final one being literally described by Storm in X-Men Red #11 to act like a God-King who treats everyone like courtiers to be called on as he likes.]

He had given to them knowledge that could and would have allowed humanity to surpass the gods; the means to defy fate and create their own destiny (a future they may call their own)...something he suffered punishment for and is not shown as regretful for doing so. But humanity indulged in fate and prophecy; eschewing the light of creativity and critical thought for “glimpses of deceitful futures” when they should have pursued knowledge and attained their own form of wisdom that would allow them to be free from the “truth” that the gods told them--that fate cannot be defied, and that they should act in accordance to it; being champions of the gods for their petty little squabbles.

[The progress and prosperity shown during the Destiny of X arc is implied to be the result of Kurt’s actions--by means of his philosophy as well as his dedication to encouraging progress amongst the people. Heck, Kurt’s attitude and behaviour towards Destiny (the precog); especially when people just take her word for it without questioning further. In Immortal X-Men 7, it’s even more obvious when he’s the only one who noticed that she had been lying the whole time for her own selfish reasons...and takes it upon himself to force her to tell him a truthful vision.] 

Again, all of the above is pretty self-explanatory; and honestly, when Kurt got angry in Immortal X-Men 7...it’s not Nightcrawler that’s angry. It’s the person that is Kurt who is mad that things even had to go this far; that so much death and sacrifice had to happen...not just for him but for every single person blessed with life and must choose to die, so that a handful might be saved.

Truthfully, he should have been angry a long time ago. 

But the hero that is Nightcrawler cannot be angry...can he? 

He is supposed to be the optimist; the happy-go-lucky one in the midst of a dangerous battle for his life, the hopeful one who shines brightly amongst the rest. He is supposed to willingly die for a world and its people who fear and hate him...and not take it personally or think: why can I not choose to live? Why must I be the one who dies for the world, killed by my own sword of hope that is made from the myriad of dreams, wishes and hopes entrusted to me by others?

-there is NO medical consensus on porn addiction. it is not a 'real thing' and most of the time the source is some form of religious guilt, shame, depression, etc and sex is the quickest way to get endorphins. which is why porn is such a big economic influence. porn has always been one of the main drives of pushing innovation.

-linking a few studies does not prove anything. thats literally not how science works. yall need to also understand that porn is going to affect different people differently. cis men and cis male teens who already don't ever evaluate their role in society, or ever think twice about gender roles and already have their set-in-stone ideas about sex and gender are going to be affected differently. these studies never take into account the sociological aspect of these men and where they stand on sex and gender or how they interact with each other.

people are obsessed with sex and porn! they always have been! sex and sexuality is normal and desirable and yall need to stop acting like it isnt or is some huge taboo thing or that it NEVER has affected our society and shaped how we do things. people have ALWAYS been obsessed by it and it has always shaped laws and society.
