Second Born Blood
When this card is equipped on Cain and Abel (Avenger),
Gain 20 critical stars and grant party Invincibility for 1 turn when they are defeated.
Description:
”Am I my brother’s keeper?”
In the years I was left to wander the earth, the question I had posed to the Lord continued to plague my mind. The ground onto which I had spilled my brother’s blood never bore fruit again. The curse etched into my soul burned as I beared the brunt of attempts on my life, only to be saved by it and live another day.
”Am I my brother’s keeper?”
For a time, I despised him. I loathed the searing sun and desolate ground, detested the stinging winds and wrathful flames. It must be his fault, the burden I bear. Why had the Lord favored him, when my offering was just as plentiful? If he hadn’t been a braggart, I wouldn’t have struck him dead!
”Am I my brother’s keeper?”
What a fool. He had done nothing but rejoice, yet I was blinded by envy. I had partaken in sin of my own volition, there was no one else to blame. This curse was my just deserts.
If I could turn back time, return to those blissful days before jealousy consumed me..
”Brother, Master is calling. Let’s not keep them waiting.”
Then I shall be my brother’s keeper, for as long as fate allows me.

Character Information:
The tragic brothers from the book of Genesis.
There’s not much to be said about this pair that hasn’t already been said, aside from how cruel it must be to now share a Spirit Origin with your killer.
Oddly, Cain seems to be the mild-mannered and polite brother, while Abel’s presence bears a menacing aura.
Approach them with caution.
Bond 1:
Height/Weight: 175 cm • 76.2 kg/160 cm • 60 kg
Origin: Biblical
Alignment: Chaotic Evil/Chaotic
Neutral
Genders: Male
”Thank you for having us, Master.”
”Master, may I strike Brother?”
”Oh Abel...”
Bond 2:
There were once a pair of brothers, the elder named Cain and younger named Abel.
Cain was a tiller, working the land, while Abel was a herdsman, tending to livestock. One day, they were commanded to make an offering to God.
Cain burnt the plentiful yield of his crops, and Abel the finest young of his flock. However, God only looked upon Abel’s offering with favor. God told the older brother it was for his own good, for his improvement
Envy, pride and wrath raged within Cain, that he had been rejected so callously. And when the brothers were next alone in his fields, the younger was struck dead.
And so God banished Cain, marked as sinner.
But that’s a story we all know, isn’t it?
Bond 3:
For in truth, what had it meant to strike someone dead, when death meant nothing to man yet? Cain knew not what he was doing when he attacked, simply acting on his basest urge to hurt out of being hurt. And from Abel’s death was born the sin of murder.
Perhaps the true curse he was inflicted with wasn’t the mark God gave him, but the overwhelming guilt that plagued him for the rest of his wandering days.
All he could think about was the life he had snuffed; the kind and caring soul surrounded by his herds. As he grew old, how would his brother have appeared if they still stood side-by-side? As his child was born, would he have been there to congratulate him? As he laid beneath the toppled bricks of his rooftop, was Abel there in the winds, rightfully laughing at the irony of his death by stone?
Oh, remorse was a heavy burden to bear indeed.
Bond 4:
○The Sins and Boons of Eve A+
Some interpretations say that while the brothers shared Eve as their mother, their fathers may have been different. Cain is sometimes believed to have been conceived through an affair, partners ranging from the snake that tempted Eve, to a fallen angel, to the devil himself. And it is this possible inhuman blood that leads to one answer as to why the older brother was capable of such sin.
○Mark of the Pariah EX
The curse placed upon Cain was one meant to make him suffer. The earth he once nurtured would never again offer its prize for his labor, and those who saw the mark upon his skin would know his nature. And perhaps it was mercy, or a twisted sense of justice, that God also made the mark one of protection; Cain would not die before his allotted time, unlike the life he so cruelly ended.
○Corvid Guided Burial A+
When Abel was struck down, Cain was at a loss. The death of man was a mystery to him, let alone one by another’s hand. It was then a Corvid landed on the ground. The bird sang a strange, sorrowful song as it scratched the ground, calling for the murderer to follow it. And follow he did, digging a deep hole to bury his brother in.
Though, Cain couldn’t understand why there were tears running down his face as he did.
Bond 5:
Genesis of Envy
「 Death of the Brother, Origin of Sin」
Rank: A+
Type: Anti-Army Sin
Range: 0~?
Target: N/A
While on the surface Cain appears to be calm and levelheaded, his sin follows him wherever he goes. There’s an urge that scratches underneath his skin; to kill his brother again, and again, and again. As long as Abel lives, Cain must forever hold back the instinct to strike him down. So instead, he takes out that pent up desire on the enemies he faces, tearing them down without regret or mercy. They will be his sacrificial lambs; anything to keep Abel safe.
Exactment of Envy
「 First Victim of Sin, Slaughtered Lamb」
Rank: A+
Type: Anti-Unit Sin
Range: 1~3
Target: 1 Person
The brothers are inextricably linked through their shared tragedy, each too weak to be summoned separately. It is Abel that causes their shared Spirit Origin to manifest as Avenger, but had they not been summoned together, Exactment of Envy would not be nearly as powerful without him being directly linked to the source of his vengeance. Even as murderer and victim, these brothers rely on one another, in a twisted way.
Unlock After Interlude:
Ahhh, he deserves to die. How dare he, how dare he, how dare he!
What had I ever done to deserve this?! Had I not been good? Had I not been dutiful? Had I not been kind? I only did what was asked of me! I only wanted to do right by the Lord, my God!
In the field that day...
Why, why, WHY!?
Why... Big brother...?
No.
You’re not my brother, are you? You’re nothing but a filthy animal in disguise, pretending to be an innocent lamb. Murderer, murderer, murderer, that must be all you are...
Then I suppose that means both us brothers died that day! Hah, hahahaAHAHAHAHA!
And yet... why am I still not satisfied?

My Room
Bond Lvl. 1:
Cain: Master, if I may be so bold, could I request we be placed on the backlines?
Abel: Coward.
Cain: It’s for your own good Abel!
Abel: As if you care what happens to me. Or did you decide to conveniently forget your sins?
Cain: Abel, I...
Abel: Shut up, I don’t want to hear anymore.
Bond Lvl. 2:
Cain: You know, we used to be very close once.
Abel: I don’t think they care to hear. Nor do I.
Cain: Abel was the cutest little thing as a babe! He’d go trotting around trying to get the sheep to play with him. And he’d always ask me to pick him up and give him tosses when father was too busy. It was adorable!
Abel: Do you want to die?
Cain: Does it bring back any memories?
Abel: ....
Bond Lvl. 3:
Abel: You’re far too comfortable having us around, Master.
Cain: Why must you be so blunt about everything...? And why do you say that?
Abel: Because Master seems like a good lamb. They shouldn’t have to make due with filth like you.
Cain: I suppose that’s true. But they’ve made contracts with many other... Unusual types of Servants. Perhaps our presence doesn’t bother them much?
Abel: I don’t like them either. They should stay away too.
Cain: Oh...
Bond Lvl. 4:
Abel: Master, are you free? My fool of a brother hurt himself again. Heal him.
Cain: It- It’s nothing! Anything to protect you both, after all...
Abel: If you die, I die with you, so let them heal you... Tch, this shared Spirit Origin is such a pain...
Cain: Ehehe... I’m happy to see that you even somewhat care for me.
Abel: Didn’t you hear what I just said? Maybe I really should kill you myself.
Cain: That’s the only way I want to die. Would that free you from this vengeance?
Abel: ... I don’t know...
Bond Lvl. 5:
Abel: The truth is... I don’t remember much about being human. Alive. Nowadays, there are feelings, or glimpses, but never anything solid. My memory begins and ends with my death, and that Brother killed me.
Cain: Abel...
Abel: So, you shouldn’t trust that Sinner to protect you, Master, or any of his ilk. They’ll try anything to corrupt a nice lamb like you.
Cain: But Abel, it’s our job as Servants to-
Abel: I can protect them on my own just fine. I don’t need your help.
Cain: ... Aha, haha, I see.
Abel: What? What are you laughing at!? Shut up!
Cain: No, I understand! So there really is a little of the old you in there... I see I shouldn’t be too worried then, since Abel is so resolved.
Cain: Rest assured Master, we’ll both do our very best to help you on your journey, any way we can. We swear. Right Abel?
Abel: I...
Cain: ....
Abel: .... We swear...
Dialogue 1:
Cain: What are you thinking about Abel?
Abel: Aside from killing you?
Cain: Yes, aside from that.
Abel: ... I want to lay down. On something cozy.
Cain: Huh?
Dialogue 2:
Cain: Master, is there anything we can do for you?
Abel: Something you need killed?
Dialogue 3:
Cain: You know Master, Abel used to be the cutest little kid!
Abel: Stop.
Cain: He’d follow the lambs around and make baa-ing sounds at them! Oh, and-!
Abel: You seem to want to die right now.
Cain: … Ahaha.
Dialogue 4 (After reaching Bond 5):
Abel: Go away.
Cain: Abel, don’t be rude!
Abel: I meant you, not Master. I want to play with Master for a bit.
Cain: .... Then far be it from me to stop you.
Abel: Stop smiling like that. It’s disgusting.
Dialogue 5 (After reaching Bond 5):
Cain: Abel, you know I love you right?
Abel: No you don’t.
Cain: Of course I do.
Abel: Shut up.
Cain: I love-
Abel: QUIET!
Dialogue 6 (Paris / Attila the San(ta)):
Abel: ...
Cain: Hm? Is something wrong?
Abel: ... Looks soft...
Cain: Soft? ... Oh, that sheep?
Abel: Mhm...
Cain: Should I go ask if you can pet it?
Abel: I can ask for myself!
Dialogue 7 (Avenger Class Servants):
Abel: Huh? That’s...
Cain: Ah, I suppose they’re another like us. Hm, something wrong Abel?
Abel: ... N-nothing, I... don’t like it.
Cain: There is a despairing aura to them... Perhaps I’m just used to it.
Dialogue 8 (Dioscuri / Trung Sisters):
Cain: Ah, look Abel, it’s those siblings I heard about!
Abel: Siblings... And you share a Spirit Origin as well?
Cain: I’m sure you must have a wonderful bond, to manifest together like this. Frankly, I’m a little jealous.
Abel: ... I don’t see why, it’s awful being stuck with you.
Cain: Oh Abel, you really know how to break my heart...
Abel: ... What heart...
Dialogue 9 (Kiara Sessyoin / Kama / Koyanskaya of Light / Koyanskaya of Darkness / Larva Tiamat / Sodom’s Beast/Draco)
Abel: Grrrrr!
Cain: Woah! Abel, calm down!
Abel: Let me go! I can feel them! Another one is here; Sinner, Sinner! SCUM LIKE THAT SHOULD DIE!
Cain: Master, I’m sorry, I’ll make sure to hold him back- Abel, gnaw on my arm if that will help placate you.
Abel: Grrr....
Dialogue 10 (Karna / Santa Karna / Arjuna / Arjuna Alter):
Cain: Ah, I see we’re not the only brothers here with a... Complicated relationship.
Abel: What’s complicated about it? You killed me in cold blood. We’re murderer and victim before we’re brothers.
Cain: Always to the heart of the matter huh...
Abel: ... That said, I think I can understand them. Just a little.
Cain: Is that a good thing?
Abel: ... I don’t know.
Likes:
Cain: I used to love growing crops but ever since my curse... Well, you know. But, I did learn all sorts of things during my wandering, I’d say I’m quite partial to whittling in particular. What about you Abel?
Abel: I... think I liked... Soft things.
Dislikes:
Abel: I’ll kill him one day. I despise him.
Cain: ... I can’t say that I don’t agree. I deserve it, after all.
About the Holy Grail:
Cain: A wish huh... Sounds too good to be true.
Abel: To kill brother.
Cain: How decisive. Well, considering my wish would be “Abel’s happiness”, then I suppose our wish is one in the same.
Abel: ...
During an Event:
Abel: It’s noisy over there, how annoying.
Cain: Now now, don’t say that! Let’s at least see what’s happening.
Birthday:
Cain: Today is the day you received the gift of life! ... I must apologize, but I feel that it would be best for you to stay away from us for the day, Master.
Abel: For once, I agree with him. We’re nothing but a bad omen on a day like this. But... Um...
Cain: Abel?
Abel: H- Happy birthday to youuuu... ♪
Cain: Ahh, hehe... Yes, please accept our well wishes, at the very least.
Valentine’s CE:

Olive Branch Brothers
Description:
A Valentine’s return gift from Cain and Abel.
When Abel expressed that he wished to return your kind Valentine’s gesture, Cain immediately set forth the idea of creating carvings. It took the brothers’ some deliberation (and fighting) to come to the conclusion that the most meaningful gift they could provide you was their united cooperation. The two figures are not just a physical olive branch, but a metaphorical one as well, each brother carving the likeness of the other.
Cain’s carving of Abel is smooth and practiced, nary a blemish in sight. It’s shine and lacquered finish bring out the natural beauty of the wood grain, and it’s clear to see his experience.
Abel’s carving of Cain is... Crude, to say the least. Painfully sharp edges, a rough texture, and smears of blood where he’d clearly nicked himself on the carving tool are all present. And yet, you can’t help but find the earnestness heartwarming.
Of course, as you proudly display them on your shelf, you try to ignore the obvious self-vandalism Abel committed on Figure-Cain’s head and heart.
These brothers still have a long way to go.

In Genesis 4 & 5, we see genealogies for both Cain and Adam. Although it’s easy to glaze over sections like this, there are a few main points we get from this section of Genesis:
1. Cain and Adam’s genealogies are listed separately because Cain (after he murdered his brother) had been “exiled” and “disowned” from the family line that would produce Noah, Abraham, David, and Jesus.
2. Names, as did all names at this point in history, had meanings. Knowing their names, meant knowing their role in working the earth such as, “Jubal”, meaning, “father of musical instruments.”
3. After Adam had a third son (Abel was killed by Cain and Cain was “disowned”), Gen. 4:26 says, “At that time men began to call on the name of the Lord.” And in Gen. 5:3, we read, “He (Adam) had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth.” Meaning, humans are back on track. Despite what Cain did, we find God blessing Adam with another son, who is “in his image” (and Adam was made in “the image of God”) and from Seth, would come all these great people who God had special purposes for, including Noah, Abraham, and David, that would all lead eventually to Jesus.

Note
Big long message coming from someone who binged the whole game in two days:
1. Whoever wrote the Abel route deserves to get all the good things in life. His bright and warm personality and natural quirkiness tugged at my heartstrings and I just knew I wanted my MC to stick by him. It's no wonder so many peeps loved his route-- he was super fleshed out and he takes a new spin on the nerd LI archetype. Not to mention, his past with his family is bittersweet, yet it was never used for shock value. It was evident how these experiences affected his character and how he interacts with others, and it never fails to radiate how genuine he is and how much reality was inspired in his making.
(Also that last sex with him was so detailed, raw, passionate, and personal. Everything is scorched on my front lobe and I will nevrr forget it.mE.A. James could never.)
I can feel the good writing for all routes and the whole narrative in general even if I didn't pick them as LIs. The talent of the writing team always oozes, and I can never stop reading. I might retry other routes and I will do that after recovering from the psychic damage I acquired crying and laughing with this story.
2. From what I've read on the net so far, the Mixed Ending was the most well-liked ending, but I beg to digress because I am selfish and delusional and I just want my MC to rest, ok? 😔 I personally favored the successful non-betrayal blood ending.
The consequences of the ending are much more direct than that of the mixed ending and at least it was easier to cope with it because MC still has their support group, but I just really love the closure it provided that my gen!MC (ironic, I know) stayed true to what she wanted, which was to continue the life that was frozen over since the incident. Shadow Ending is honestly the most selfless and poetic ending that gave me crippling depression and I loved its angst. The Mixed Ending was my least favorite because it was the most open-ended one, and I felt unsettled by it because I felt the least secure for my MC's future, esp with their LI. I still have to play through Matthias' route but it's really promising.
3. I can't help but have my curiosity piqued by how everything played out with a similar pattern to how colonisers always end up messing up and undoing the progress of indigenous people's learnings and practices, and their utter disrespect for nature which ultimately blows up in their face but unfortunately, it's those that try to save it that suffer the most. The subtle incorporation of this theme was the perfect piece that really tied together the past of all It Lives book. Loha and Matthias were the perfect characters to resemble this struggle.
What lingers in my mind, however, is that Loha and Matthias, as individuals, are the two sides of the same coin. Both characters have personal strong connections to the Power, have personal gains and goals for it, used, manipulated and forced people to assist them in their cause, and ultimately birthed a person that was meant to be the key to finish their mission.
Though it was true that what Loha did was for the common good vs. Matthias' hedonistic and self-centered purposes, I think Loha is no better than Matthias, (Sorry, guys. I know some of you might fight me.) and I think it is equally hypocritical of Loha to ask MC to lay down her life to heal the breach and feel disappointed when MC doesn't do as she says.
She shared herself how a wisp was so curious of life on Earth that this innocent venture eventually bloomed into all this, so she knew that to an extent, even if the Shadow Ending occurs, it might happen again so long as the Power has free will to choose and explore. Maybe that's why I like the Blood Ending so much, I don't see a point to all the MC's (esp. ILW) suffering so much when they are mortals constantly being tested by a higher power. I think it was best to share the labor for everyone to maintain than just place the burden on one person. (My MC worked her ass off to charm Abel's pants off I simply can't let her down 😔)
4. The team is so resourceful with reusing, mixing, and adding visual assets to the game. Seeing the familiar layout and mechanics such as reusing minor characters really established the familiar Choices foundation of the game, but the impressively added illustrations, wide array of sprite personalization, the unique and diverse character designs, and even the title screens was truly the marks that made this an excellent fanwork. It manages to really immerse the reader and I can never, ever get enough of it.
5. In relation to 4, the programming of the game is superb. There is sensible weight and effects to choices, LIs are equally balanced and don't overpower the narrative, the godsent SAVES, the carefully considered rewards and consequences of all decisions and just everything about the system has made me question all that Choices has done since forever. How can a nonprofit fan team make such a complex system with such delicacy and thought that a multimillion dollar company simply cannot? You raised the bar higher for what interactive stories should look like. THIS is how interactive stories should be, and thanks to the user-friendly programming, the replay value is very high.
These are all I can say off the top of my head and I will always be grateful for this work you've shared to us. This is the most passionate passion project I've had the honor of experiencing, and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Should your endeavors include another interactive story (Painted Devils can't come soon enough, please just take my money!), I will be most eager to take part in it.
Sorry if this was long!
(P.S.: Abel mentioned about having people over with his shirt on. *What's his body count?* 🤭☺️)
Thank you for sending this in and sharing your thoughts!! I'm so glad that the game was so meaningful for you <3

DSMP/iDots - The Conception V2 (Crimson NG)
~~~~~~~~~~
A different perspective of my previous post, "The Conception."
Though it was not noticeable, Bad and Skeppy were each holding one of the twins in version one. However, with having their backs turned towards the camera, the babies were not visible in any way. I allowed my family to have a first look of version one, and it was my mother who suggested I make a view where the twins were seen. So, with having the SAI file saved with the extra edits, and than some, I created this version.
Version One
If you have not seen version one, or a recent status post of mine, this render is fanart in reference to a chapter of a new book I recently published on Wattpad. I have released part one of a particular oneshot titled "The Conception." Be sure to check it out if you are interested.
Meet Abel Morrow founder of the Morrow Random Legacy. He's Rancher, Jealous and Overachiever with a Country Caretaker Aspiration
The rolls for gen.1 are follow...
Marital Status: Mixed Couple
Children must be a mix of naturally born and adopted. If you have rolled to have only one child, you may have a second to satisfy this parameter.
Children: Two children
Primary Career: Mini-farmer
Sell milk and wool from mini-goats and mini-sheep. You may also sell horse manure.
Secondary Career: Fishersim
Sell your catches
Generational Goal: Collector
Your heir, spouse, helpers and children must complete and display one of the collections. All items must be found or grown that generation, and for plants you may not use seeds from previous generations…find your own! If you already completed part of a collection in a previous generation, you can choose that collection, but you must collect the objects you already have again with a sim from this generation. A collection is any of those you find by clicking the diamond in the personal inventory window. You know you’ve completed it because a plaque will arrive in the mail. Display however you’d like but they should be displayed somewhere through the entirety of the challenge.
Miscellaneous Fun: Homemade
May not get quick meals from the fridge, order pizza, eat from food stalls or dine out, consume plasma packs, and may only cook meals with ingredients if all ingredients are present. The pre-made toddler meals you can serve from the high chair are considered quick meals.
In the Torah we discover a special verse that identifies the struggle we all have with sin in our lives. It appears early in the book of Genesis concerning God's appeal to Adam and Eve’s firstborn son Cain, who was envious of his brother Abel. When Cain was upset that God had "looked upon" (i.e., accepted) Abel's offering of a lamb but had overlooked his own offering of fruit, he was angry and became downcast. And now here is our verse: “So the LORD said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry? and why is your face fallen? If you do well, will you not find acceptance? But if you do not do well, sin lurks at the door; its desire is for you, yet you must rule over it" (Gen. 4:6-7). Sadly Cain did not learn how to rule over the anger that lurked at the door of his heart, and later murdered his brother Abel...
And God makes the same appeal to each of us: "Why are you so angry? Why are you downcast? If you do well, will you not find acceptance? But if you do not do well, sin lurks at the door; its desire is for you, yet you must rule over it." Amen, we say, but how are we to understand this admonition? How can we learn to overrule sin within our own hearts?
Let’s think this through a bit. First of all we know that sin is doing what is contrary to God's will (1 John 3:4), and we also know that God has endowed the soul with a "conscience" that convicts us when we do something wrong (Rom. 2:15). When we realize that we have sinned we feel down, or have a "fallen face" (פָּנִים נָפלוֹת). When we feel ashamed when we do something wrong, we should understand that this painful feeling is meant to correct us and turn us back to the good. The conscience is a great gift from heaven because it serves as an intuitive or inner guide that instructs us about what is right and what is wrong -- and how we should live our lives. Indeed, both the Hebrew word for "conscience" (i.e., matzpun: מַצְפוּן) and the word for "compass" (i.e., matzpen: מַצְפֵן) come the root idea of a hidden source of guidance (צפן) that will direct the way we should go. The Greek word for “conscience” used in the New Testament is συνείδησις, a word that means perceiving something in relation to a known standard of measurement, particularly knowing the rightness or wrongness of a thought or action in light of God's moral law that is intuitively apprehended within the heart (Rom. 2:15). Conscience is the awareness of moral truth; it is part of the image of God within us that is grounded in logic and reason. The Apostle Paul testified that he relied upon the "inner light" of conscience to guide his behavior: "And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God and toward men" (Acts 24:16). The conviction of the conscience bears witness to the spirit of truth (Rom. 9:1).
When moral truth is suppressed or denied, however, or when conviction for sin is dismissed or ignored, a terrible thing begins to happen. The soul itself becomes darkened and damaged. A "seared conscience" is one that is no longer able to detect the prompting of the inner voice of moral truth. Such a conscience is “cauterized” and made dead to the truth. If one good deed leads to another, so one sin leads to another, but a life of ongoing sin that is repeatedly denied or suppressed produces a spiritually lethal state wherein God "gives the soul over" to its godless desires and allows the person to have their own inner darkness.
Tragically we see the effect of a seared conscience in our world every day. Hatred, rage, acts of murder; mass shootings, acts of sexual perversion and violence, drug addictions, and so on, are all prevalent in a godless world that has lost its ability to know what is right and what is wrong. The ongoing deception of political, educational, scientific, and business leaders inevitably evokes the divine judgment on cultures that do not promote virtue. It is hardheartedness and inner depravity that seeks to justify the extinguishment of shame at the price of honesty and truth... The Bible warns us of false teachers who are mouthpieces of evil, and the world system is filled with such teachers who suppress the truth for the violence of the lie.
Sin "lurks at the door," waiting for the heart to open itself to its lying seductions. In Jewish thinking, the inner urge to sin, what Christians sometimes call the "sin nature," is personified as an alien force that desires access to your soul. This evil impulse to do what is wrong is called the "yetzer ha'ra" (יֵצֶר הַרַע), or the imagination of evil. The sages came up with the term as they discussed the phrase "the imagination of the heart of man [is] evil" (יֵצֶר לֵב הָאָדָם רַע) in the time of Noah's generation (Gen. 6:5, Gen. 8:21). The word "yetzer" refers to the "form" the imagination uses to incline the will, whether to good or to bad. For instance, yetzer can refer to something formed by a potter or it can refer to the form of a graven image or idol. The Jewish concept of yetzer hara is often thought to be a weakness of the soul. In Christian thinking, however, the yetzer ha'ra is thought of as our fallen "sin nature," or the indwelling desire to sin that is the result of our guilt and shame. In the New Testament we read that the devil walks about as a roaring lion, seeking to "devour" human souls (1 Pet. 5:8), and this picture goes beyond the thought that evil is the result of fallen sinful nature alone. Our verse reads: "sin lurks at the door; its desire is for you, yet you must rule over it," and that suggests that there exists an alien force that seeks access to the human heart in order to entice it to indulge its sinful nature in contempt of God's moral law. "It's desire is for you" can also be read as "his" desire is for you,” and that is what the devil does, after all: he desires souls -- he feeds on them and hungers for them to join him in his lost estate of perdition...
The Lord promises us victory over our own inclination to sin as well as the outright temptations of the devil if we will sincerely yield to him: "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you" (James 4:7-8). As it says in another place: "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man, but God is faithful, who will not permit you to be tempted above what you are able to bear; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape (τὴν ἔκβασιν), that you may have strength (δύναμις) to endure it" (1 Cor. 10:13).
If a "seared conscience" is one that is unfeeling and dead to moral truth, a godly conscience is one that is tender, sensitive, and fully alive to moral reality. We can learn to heighten our awareness of moral truth by means of the study of Scripture, as it says "All Scripture is given by the breath of God (i.e.,θεόπνευστος) and is profitable for teaching, for conviction, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness" (2 Tim 3:16). Of course Yeshua is our Lord, our Master and our guide, and therefore we should careully study his words about the righteousness of the law, the rule of the kingdom, our duty to practice works of love, and so on. The traditional study of Jewish ethics, called "musar," can also provoke us think about how to live our lives as "tzaddikim," or righteous people (Psalm 1:1-3).
The Hebrew word “chinukh” (חִנּוּךְ), “education,” shares the same root as the word "chanukah" (חֲנֻכָּה), meaning “dedication.” Unlike the Greek view that regards education as a pragmatic process of improving one's personal power or happiness, the Jewish idea implies dedication to God and the willingness to be partners with Him on the earth. Disciples of Yeshua are therefore called "talmidim" (תַּלְמִידִים) -- a word that comes from “lamad” (לָמַד) meaning “to learn” (the Hebrew word for teacher is “melamad” (מְלַמֵּד) from the same root). In the New Testament, the word “disciple” is μαθητής, a learner or a pupil of a διδάσκαλος, or a teacher. I mention all this because true education is foundational to being a disciple of the Messiah, and moral education is a large part of that education.
Let’s go back to where we started. "If you do well, will you not find acceptance?" The Hebrew for "do well" here (i.e., yahtav: יָטַב) means to be glad or joyful, to have inner peace and confidence because our conscience attests that we are approved of God. We will then find "acceptance," or she’eit (שְׂאֵ), a word that comes from the verb "nasa" (ָשָׂא) meaning to be lifted up or elevated. When we honor God's truth, we will experience true self-acceptance because God himself will lift up our hearts. And that is the source of our power to withstand temptations of sin, namely knowing that God has accepted us and gives us his shalom. We turn to God and know him as the “friend of sinners” who loves us with everlasting love...
O precious Lord my Healer, "cause me to me hear your lovingkindness in the morning, for in You do I trust; cause me to know the way I should go, for I lift up my soul to you." Amen. [Hebrew for Christians]
Chapter Summary:      The Realms of the Endless were vast and immeasurable, and although they came into being in service to mortals, they were not, in their entirety, comprehensible to them. The Dreaming, in your experience, as the only one you knew, was not bound by logic, and could be described as abstract, metaphysical and beyond dimension.     In the roles of the Endless, it was not unlikely for them to overlap, from time to time. And thus, there were overlaps between their realms, but they were rare and far between, and the denizens of the Dreaming knew to avoid them absolutely, without exception.     But, for some, there were extenuating circumstances that they could not control.
The day before the autumn equinox in Greece, you roam the Dreaming, and Morpheus makes a decision.
Read below for chapter notes.
Notes: As with the prologue, I won’t say you ‘need’ to read “The Song of Orpheus” comic, but I still highly recommend that you do. This chapter features Gregory, Abel and Cain, the Corinthian, Despair and Desire, and Aristeas the raven (from “the Sandman” comics).
For the most part, this chapter occurs in second-person perspective.
Throughout this chapter, but particularly toward the end, there is heavy introspection that mentions fatal ends, which is not dissimilar towards suicidal ideation, although it does not have the same level of destruction or violence implied for us human mortals. So, take care of yourself as you read, and take comfort in that ‘you’ does still find hope and courage in ‘your’ continued existence.
So, despite that they are a reader-insert/self-insert, they are also an original character in their own right.
Endnotes: I’m not sure what exact time in history this chapter occurs, but it’s between Ancient Greece and the Dark Ages (between 7th century BC and 11th century AD), which is a long length of time, but I didn’t want to be precise. The most evident markers are that Dream’s current raven is Aristeas of Marmoa, who lived in the 7th century BC, and Gregory the Gargoyle already exists, and thus, as his existence in the Dreaming is inspired by French sculpting of gargoyles (which I believe existed at least before the 8th century AD), this chapter must occur sometime after.
1 Samuel 17
The first shepherd in Scripture, Abel, was also the first murder victim (see Genesis 4). In the first five books of the Old Testament, a shepherd was a common occupation. We meet Jacob, whose flocks God greatly blessed (Gen. 31:4–9). Moses was taking care of sheep in Midian when God met him in the burning bush (Exodus 3). But the most famous biblical shepherd was King David, who watched over his family’s flocks (Ps. 78:70–72).
The skills David learned while shepherding helped him face the giant Goliath. As the youngest son, he was charged with tending the sheep (v. 15) and running errands. When he arrived at the Israelite army’s encampment with bread and cheese for his brothers, he was dismayed to hear Goliath’s scornful challenge. God’s name was being tarnished by the enemy’s boastful insults as well as the Israelites’ cowardice and lack of faith. When he inquired about the situation, though, his brother Eliab angrily mocked him as an irrelevant shepherd boy (v. 28).
Nonetheless, David volunteered to face Goliath. He told King Saul that as a shepherd he had experience protecting the flock from bears and lions (vv. 34–37). His slingshot was a serious weapon (see Judg. 20v16). The stones he picked up from the stream were not the pebbles depicted by Sunday School illustrations (v. 40). Each rock was the size of a baseball and weighed about nine ounces. Skilled users could launch them at up to 100–150 miles per hour!
David’s faith, though, was not in his weapons or his abilities but in God. “The battle is the Lord’s,” he proclaimed (vv. 45–47). Then he stunned the giant and chopped off his head with his own sword. The Israelites took courage, followed his example, and won the battle!
Dealing with problems and challenges in our own strength is a recipe for disaster. Like David, we should face whatever challenge each day brings with the cry, “The battle is the Lord’s.”
