Rap Songs to Relive My 2018-2022
In the above playlist is some of my favorite songs over the years, each being under the theme of melodic rap/hip hop. With the ability to track the date of when you added songs to your playlists on the Spotify website, the special theme of this playlist to me, is each of some of my top songs year by year. These songs were released close to when I found and added them as well, each being released the year I found them or the December of the year before. Each of these songs represents a certain event that I instantly recall, during the time when I would listen to these songs.
Noticed, by Lil Mosey, was written in 2018 and was the year I first started listening to it. This was my freshman year in high school, and was one of the first songs I remember listening to during this time. As I would pass the halls or do busy work in class, this would be one of the many songs I would listen to. Over time, I began to grow bored of the song, however now, when I listen to it I get nostalgic feelings and the vibes of reliving my freshman year which seemed like ages ago. While Noticed did receive some backlash by the public, saying that it was "basically a logical yet utterly unimpressive attempt at a modern Fetty Wap" (Singles Jukebox), I would have to disagree. While yes, I think that the song is pretty generic and not really unique, I believe that that fact doesn't take away the song's success. I, as well as many other of my friends who were of the target age of this song I would say, enjoyed this song and found that it was an extremely good listen for just about whatever. Another thing to consider is the artist's age at the time, 16, which is something that is extremely impressive when you really think about it. The kid was one to two years older than I was at the time, so considering that he was able to attract the attention of some random freshman in North Jersey, I would say he must have done something right. All in all, this is a song that I look back on and relive the memory of my freshman years.
Look Back at It, written by A Boogie, was released in December of 2018/beginning of 2019, was the song that I would attribute to the tail end of my 2019 to. The particular memory that I think of when I listen to this song would be the long bus rides to school every morning. Starting my sophomore year in high school, I would take the bus to school instead of getting a ride from my parents. Because I was one of the first stops, normal bus rides would take somewhere between an hour and an hour fifteen for me to get school. In music translation: this meant I had a LOT of time on my hands to listen to music, Look Back at It, being one of them. This song, similar to Noticed, also received its fair share of backlash, some saying that "The song features a stripped down pop instrumental, both some mushy and trill words from Boogie, and lots of hypnotizing vibes" (RGM). To some extent, now that I look back at it (no pun intended), the song does get monotonous and sometimes repetitive throughout. However, I believe that the story and melody behind the song contributes to its overall success, and really stuck with me during that year. Less of an upbeat song, but rather a more depressing one, this song is somewhat different from A Boogie's usual work, and I guess to some extent, that's what I appreciated about this song so much.
Heartless. The oddball I would say of this group of 5. Released by the Weekend in late 2019/early 2020, Heartless was the song I would attribute to my 2020. During the time of the COVID lockdown, it seemed like the social media platform "TikTok" was taking over my life. With nothing to do, I spent hours on this app to pass the time, and that was where I found this song. At first I hadn't thought anything of it, but as I continued to hear this song played over and over again, on the radio, on social media, etc., it started to get stuck in my head. Thus, I would say that Heartless was the prominent song that I would attribute my 2020 to. While some of these memories aren't extremely great to remember, as the pandemic wasn't exactly a great time, this was a song that has prominently reminded me of my 2020.
2021, the tail end of my junior year into the start of my senior year. This was around the time when we were allowed to start going back to school in person, and so that experience was very relieving after the 1 and a half year prison we were in. Juniors were allowed to drive and park to school, however I was too young for my license at the time, so my friend drove me and a bunch of my other friends who were in a similar situation. And, as the common rule goes, whoever drives gets aux. Thus, I was introduced to J. Cole and his new album The Offseason, but more specifically, the song my.life. From that day on I fell in love, not only with the album, but the artist J. Cole himself. I talked about J. Cole in my blog post here, so you should definitely give that a read to see my opinions on the song. This song always brings me good vibes when I give it a listen, I picture the energetic morning car rides, with J. Cole being blasted at max volume with the windows open. To me, this song is more than just my favorite song during my junior year of high school. To me, it represents the freedom from the pandemic and the happy attributions to the return of in person schooling.
Finally, last but not least, Jimmy Cooks by Drake. Oddly enough, I had been a fan of Drake's work for a while, but hadn't kept up with his recent stuff for a while. This song however, put me right back in the loop and reminded me why I liked his music in the first place. While it was no "mind blowing" experience, it was still a song that gave me a Drake vibe. The beat, flow, melody, everything about it just screamed Drake. I first heard this song when I was working out, and I had ironically forgotten my airpods that day so I just settled with whoever was on the gym aux. Even something crazier, was the fact that this song was playing when I hit my max on the bench press at the time, so now when I listen to this song it's always attributed with good memories and pumps me up when I go to the gym. Many describe the song as "the most high-energy, lucid moment of the record" (Vulture), and I couldn't agree more. While my 2022 isn't over yet, I would say that as of right now it is the song that I think of when I think of my 2022. The end of my high school chapter and the start of a new one in college.
All in all, I would say that this playlist can be used for anything. Early morning drive to work? Long workout session? Bus ride to school? I would say that this range of music can make these periods of time go at least a little bit faster. Even if it doesn't, this playlist is very personal to me, because these songs are what I attribute to each year. When these songs, and some others too, but these in particular, I can immediately recall all the memories of when I was listening to these songs, whether they be good or bad. And so, I thought why not share my personal life with the public through my life as kid in high school through the songs I was listening to.
