Lightning in his Eyes and Thunder in his Wings

Chapter 1

The first chapter is odd because it is the only chapter from Bruce's POV, but it has to be, not only because Dick is so young, (eight in my HC) but also to launch the rest of the story with the correct undertone. The fact that Bruce knows the truth and Dick doesn't know he knows haunts the entire story. But, the reader has seen Bruce's perspective on things and understands why he made the choices he has, even if they disagree with them.

My favorite version of Bruce is when he really loves his kids and tries to be a good dad, screws up, and tries again/harder. Wash, rinse, and repeat as many times as necessary.

I think my favorite part of the first chapter is the Bruce energy I captured there. This man forms the entire Justice League, steals DNA samples from all of them, and tricks them into building a super database for him just so he can TRY to help Dick. He will do all of that, BUT HE WON'T ASK THEM FOR HELP!

Bruce performs a long, multi-tier, nearly impossible plan when he could have just asked for their help and had an army of superheroes all but falling over themselves to help their baby hero. (Of course, we know the reason why he didn't was to protect Dick, his secret, and Dick from the hurtful truth.)

Lastly, I will be posting weekly on either Sunday afternoons or Monday mornings. It is my minimum goal to keep to this schedule until the end, but if things go well, I'll post twice weekly. On the other hand, if things go poorly and I fall too far behind, I may have to skip a week, BUT I gave myself a bit of cushion before I started posting, so that shouldn't be a concern. *knock on wood*

109! I celebrated hitting 100 recently (technically still celebrating, I suppose).

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

1,220,396. I had a goal to hit 1 million before the end of last year, and somehow I've written 220k since then???? Howmst?

I do but I am now horribly behind because y'all are so lovely and I am a little overwhelmed. I like to respond because people took the time to leave a comment and I want them to know how much that means to me (it's a lot. it means a LOT). I promised I WILL get to them eventually!!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Definitely Who's Gonna Love You (The Mandalorian), which is a no-comfort breakup angst fic. I wrote it after having my heart ripped out by reading two unhappy ending fics lmao. Have never gone back to the truly unhappy ending again. (I have done some bittersweet or ambiguous ending fics, but those don't reach this level.)

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of my fics have quite happy endings, but I don't think you can beat a fluffy ending at the end of a long fic. I often go for the chapter full of pure, tooth-rotting fluff (after tearing your heart out lmao). That means Nova, Baby, Love is a Losing Game, A Good Man Is Hard To Find, Amor Magnus Doctor Est... probably the most pure fluff at the end.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I've had some here and there. One particular person who just kept coming back and I'm like just stop reading????

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do, but when it comes to one shots I'm probably more likely to leave it out. My smut always comes with plot and/or lots of feelings. I like writing it best as part of a larger story, actually.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I haven't for a while but I have two requests I need to fill. Previous crossovers have been The Mandalorian/Battlestar Galactica (because badass ladies named Cara/Kara), and The Mandalorian/The Witcher (because surly dudes with accidentally adopted children). Oh I guess my most recent was TMFU/Glass Onion (because Hugh Grant).

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I’m aware of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yup! Four fics, all TMFU (three by the same person). I am always happy to grant permission!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, but I've got plans with @cricketnationrise.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Can't choose! I love all the ships I write for—that's why I can't stop.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I don't think I have one of these. I have one abandoned WIP that I've anon'd because I hate it lmao. Generally if I want to finish something, I will.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Plot (I unabashedly love many of my plot twists), action sequences, dialogue/banter, world building, characterization?

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Although it should be straightforward because see: action, I feel like my smut is kind of lackluster. Sometimes I hit the notes just right and it really works, but other times I feel like people just get bored.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I'm unlikely to do it unless I have a native speaker I can run it by (I have some wonderful Russian friends who have been vital for this for some TMFU fics).

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Xena: Warrior Princess

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

I will scream about this one until the end of time, especially since it's relatively low kudos'd: the 60s chess AU, Love is a Losing Game. It's my most complete and well-structured novel, and I promise you don't need to know anything about TMFU to read it.

🌈 is there a fic that you worked *really fucking hard on* that no one would ever know? maybe a scene/theme you struggled with?

i mean, maybe it would be obvious, i don't know 😭 but straight/edge was actually really emotionally painful for me to write. it was just supposed to be a silly romance about a straight-A student and her drug dealer boyfriend, but it ended up evolving into a story of self-love and healing relationships with your family.

i remember that i took an unintentional hiatus while writing that fic—maybe, like, three months or so?—and i couldn't for the life of me figure out why it was so difficult for me to get thru some chapters. and afterwards, i was like, oh, that's why lol.

i really love that story. and i am glad i am finished with writing that universe. looking back, it was definitely a healing experience for inner adolescent nina haha.

9. Do you ever look at your stats on AO3?

I do from time to time, mostly I check the stats for "He stings like he means it (He's mean and he's mine)" because is the one currently in progress and the numbers motivate me. And sometimes but significantly less frequently I check my general stats.

26. Do you use a beta reader before publishing?

Yes! The absolute best @laurelwen who is just incredible at words and also being a great friend. If you follow my Like Minds work then you should thank her.

30. What do you struggle with most when writing?

I think that my biggest problem is the actually get to writing part lol. But seriously, I write in English and that's not my first language so oftentimes I don't know the right words or the best ways to express something. Describing specific actions and clothes for some reason are two things I struggle a lot with.

37. Do you have any older fics you would consider rewritting?

Nope. All the old ones are part of my past now, am I satisfied with how they turned out? No. But I ain't touching them ever again.

My favorite work is hard to choose, but as a whole it is Loki and Nora's Infinity Stone Playlist.

Partly it is because it is my first work, the one I have thought about the most, the one I am forever adding to. It is the genesis point of all of my other Loki and Nora timelines, and of a lot of my thought about Loki's character and what to me are changes that I can imagine for him and those I can't. Because of how long I have been writing it the Playlist has turned into its own library, one filled with characters and places that I can revisit or if I want can ring changes on in a other part of my personal multiverse.

But more than that, I feel like it is the story in which I write the most clearly about how I feel about love, about friendship, about companionship, for these two characters. I am a great lover of the specific. Of a love story that can only be between two characters because they are who they are. I believe for Loki that for him the ultimate statement of love is not 'you belong to me' but rather 'I belong to you,' because that would be so much harder for him to say, to be safe enough to feel.

When I started writing Nora I thought "well, this is never going to work because she's not going to give him an inch," but the other side of that, I realized, is that once she started to care she wasn't going to run either and that it would be good for him to face someone who didn't hate him, who didn't yell, but who calmly, stubbornly, said 'no', or when she said 'yes' said it because she was free to, not because she had to. And who would walk away from him if she felt he crossed her lines but would never run.

They are very tender with each other, but also very funny, and I think they make a good couple. They suit each other. I want to see them together having their silly adventures I think other people do, too. And that is everything for me as a writer.

i’m so happy you’re liking an empire for two 🥹❤️. it’s one of my favourite fics i’ve written so far and i sometimes worry that i might have gone too niche with the storyline.

i’m more or less done with the next chapter! which has been written since last year, UNFORTUNATELY, despite having the urge to write most days, i’ve been so busy (moving into a new flat + work has been crazy).

i should be updating empire + a few more of my fics in the coming weeks as i’m slowly coming back to all of my work now.

for now, here’s a little snippet of the beginning of chapter six especially for you <3:

chapter six : winter sound

rickon — but my voice is suffocating

Sleep still clouded his mind on that one misty morning. Much like every morning, his brothers and sisters made far too much noise. There were no raised voices to make it loud by any means, it was merely the fact that there were so many of them.

“Rickon, I’d like you to sup with me tonight. The three Mormont ladies will be joining us.”

That had woken him up easy enough. Rickon stared across the table at his oldest brother with his spoon of porridge still midair.

Robb gazed back at him blankly, all the rest of them quiet as they awaited a snarky retort. It never came, Rickon merely rolled his eyes and continued his breakfast.

“Bet you’ll like that,” Bran mumbled at his side.

Rickon glanced at his brother. He hadn’t seen Lyanna since his nameday feast and the kiss they had shared. He brought his fingers to the cut that healed steadily on his neck and anticipation began building.

“I think you should keep your mouth shut,” Rickon warned his older brother.

He was known to be impulsive– telling Bran every sordid detail about his life was one of those impulses he needed to work on controlling.

“Have you seen her since?”

Rickon eyed the rest of his siblings, noting that they were far too involved in their own conversations to care about what he and Bran were whispering about.

“I haven’t,” Rickon answered firmly.

“What will you do?”

Rickon glared at his brother. There was no forgetting how nosey Bran was. He was regardless, grateful to have someone to talk to.

He thought about his brother’s question. “Get drunk,” he said to Bran. “Her sisters will be there, I can’t quite grope her under the table.”

Bran let out a burst of laughter, causing a few stares. Rickon felt his anger start at his brother’s indiscretion.

Oof, that's a difficult one to answer because each of my fics in a different way. 🤔 I'm gonna give you two answers:

Okay, so Skaikrasha is my most self indulgent AU. It mixes Firefly and Clexa.

I love it the most of my older works because it was just me having ridiculous fun nodding to favorite sci-fi shows, video games, etc. It isn't finished, thanks to the Clexa troll sucking the life from me. 😔 But it's my favorite because it's just a fun fic, like watching an action movie/show.

As for currently, I'd say my favorite is Wicked Game. I've been writing in pretty much the same format since my first fic and I tried something different for this fic. I'm a sucker for Azgeda Clarke fics and Grounder culture. And I can't wait until we get to part when these two show up in Polis:

With the change in my writing style, this fic is really letting me stretch my writing muscles (if such a thing exists) and I'm loving every minute of it. It's not nearly as fun as Skaikrasha, in fact it's pretty angsty. Still, I'm loving all the side notes that my readers don't see that I'm writing (like Tolkien's Silmarillion but for Grounders with their origins, clan capitals and history etc). I haven't been this invested in world building a fic since Into the Woods. Plus it's canon verse Clexa with my own twists.

Author's Note chapter 4

Introducing

Dick "I need to fry some bastards" Grayson

And

Jason "I'll break you if you touch him" Todd

I'm excited about having gotten this far. I personally feel like this is where things really start in a way. Chapters 1 and 2 are backstory, and chapter 3 is the transition, but chapter 4 is the start of what I think of as current time.

You might notice a change in pacing from here on. There won't be any big time skips, just brife mentions of a few weeks passing between point A and point B here and there, but nothing substantial. While the passage of time will be slower, events will pick up.

Years have passed between the events in Titans Tower in chapter 2 and the beginning of chapter 4, and in that time Dick had created a new normal for himself, something that he believed was sustainable. Now, as promised in the story summary, Jason is back and, by merely existing in his space, has awakened something that is going to flip Dick’s world upside down.

Dick isn't human, and he has gotten to complacent with that fact.

This chapter introduces Jason into the story as an interactive character that we are finally getting to see, and I wanted him to come in with a big entrance that felt genuine to the story. This led me to writing my first ever fight scene. This was both easier and harder than I thought it would be. Dick’s sole fight was easy. I wanted to showcase how he used his abilities in a fight and him just being a badass fighter in general, so I just let him kick ass. No problem.

I had a problem after I brought Jason in. I really wanted to have them fighting together, not just in the sense of fighting back to back but actually playing off each other. Such as where Dick rolls across Jason’s back to defend him. I wanted to have more things like that, but I couldn't come up with anything. I even tried looking up fighting videos, and that was a huge bust. I hope I still got the point and the feelings across.

The next problem I had was even worse.

Talking.

I had no idea how to have them interact or what to have them say to each other. I knew the emotions and what the ultimate outcome of the interaction was supposed to be, but I agonized over this tiny little part for weeks. I even wrote around it until I hit the exact same problem with the next chapter.

I was stuck, and at that point, I stepped away from this work for quite a while, and it sat collecting dust in my docs for some time. When I came back, I still didn't know how to write the scene, but I wanted to keep my focus on this story, so this is the point that I started naming chapters. I also changed the name of the fic at this point. I was using a temporary name of "Lightning Strikes Twice." I knew that it wasn't a title I wanted to keep, and while I sometimes worry that my current title may be too long, I am much happier with it.

I finally got over my writer's block with this section while I was at work one day. I was hit with the idea of Dick’s line about Jason being snake bitten, and it seemed to shake everything loose. During my break, I made a rough outline of the scene and jotted down a few ideas for the next, and finally, I was able to move forward again. Yay!

Just finished going over my fanfic "Benny's New Year's Resolution". The cross posted one on my Ao3 account. Not the original posting of it on my Fanfiction.net account. 😑 Anyway, it has now been edited and revised (I hope I'm using that word right 😬)! So, go check it out if you haven't already. Although not much has really changed in it, though. Just some few minor correction here and there. Other than that, it's still pretty much all the same. 😊

He’s been—” Alex can’t quite make himself say it. Can’t admit that he’s been flirting with this guy, because that would mean admitting that he’s most of the way through a sexual crisis tipped off in part by the worst person in the world.

it’s very fun writing unreliable narrators. only letting the audience be told outright what the narrator believes to be true. or wants to be true.

but a shortcoming of it— although it’s par for the course— is worrying that readers won’t see what i left hidden between the lines. not knowing what’s too blatant and what’s not obvious enough. because of this i think sometimes the characters come across as a bit more “tsundere” than initially planned, insisting “no it’s definitely not because i’m (x adjective they’re in denial about)” in an attempt to make their self-deception more clear.

like i was rereading the three months o’malley epilogue— minor spoiler warning i guess. i’ll only be talking about one sentence and doing character analysis related to it—

and he says when he was born he was inexplicably angry, threw a tantrum that shorted out the power of the MoI, and barely remembers the event.

i wonder if readers will understand omalley is describing a serious anxiety attack— one that he either mostly repressed or was hampering his ability to make long term memory in the moment— that he demeans as a “tantrum” because he’s so used to a specific negative self-image that “anxious” does not fit in to. he does not believe he could have been the victim of an “anxiety attack” because he is the “attacker”. my guy woke up to existence and immediately had a meltdown over all these intense emotions he could not fathom the cause of. (*slaps director and counselor and then points over at alpha and all the fragments* look you gave them anxiety! and so so much repressed trauma)

he was treated like a machine/tool with little to no personhood by everyone but those who were friends to him and like many other fragments had internalized that “only purpose is to be helpful— ambitions and dreams? yeah i don’t get to have those. im the [single emotion/concept] one and that’s all i’ll ever be” for a long time. and any deviation from that directive was being “faulty” and a flaw rather than acknowledgement of being more “human” than the higher-ups wanted to admit.

it didn’t help that he was the “angry” one. the “problem” ai, the “destructive” one. he ended up embracing it, but internalizing that kind of self image fucks you up.

i just have a lot of thoughts and feelings about omalley ai still. a lot comes from headcanon, but those headcanons were influenced by what scraps we get in canon material.

When it comes down to it, I guess I can always explain my thought process elsewhere, like i did here. I am my primary audience first and foremost so I think with that kind of thing, as long as I understand, that’s what matters most.
