.....*whispers* the lack of critical reading skills and also the absurd lack of self-awareness in this fandom is kind of astounding sometimes /o\

i think, maybe if I’m going to be a little more specific and constructive?? i would probably ask people in american fandom specifically to take a look at their interpretations of characters and themes and notice how their political and cultural background influences those interpretations in ways that are completely unsupported by the text/deeply culturally ignorant. e.g. wwx is an extraordinary misunderstood unorthodox genius who stood up against a corrupt system as a revolutionary figure (no), or wwx is a working-class hero (nO), actually on that note, popular interpretations on class conflict in mdzs (why!!), gusu lan is abusive and cruel, specifically regarding lwj’s punishment (no!!!!!), the obsession with “complicity” (lxc, jc, nmj sometimes -- i cannot fucking emphasize enough how much that is directly taken from current left-leaning political rhetoric in the united states--a rhetoric that I think should be seriously reexamined but that’s a whole other point), trying to map american race struggles onto different groups in mdzs (no!! no no!!!), “fetishization” discourse (woof), misunderstandings of how morality matters thematically to the text (AAAAAA) etc.

i understand that everyone comes to a text from their own perspective, including me! of course i bring my own personal biases into my interpretations, but i really. most of the things i listed are points that I genuinely do not think can be argued in meaningful ways? im not sure how interested i am in actually explaining myself on a lot of them because im honestly kind of exhausted, but like!!! anyways. that’s my unpopular opinion. i am NOT sticking this in the tag lmfao

So I just watched the post-gas-bomb scene that a gorgeous gifset by @stebeee is based on (I keep trying to link the actual gifs but tumblr mobile Will Not), and I’m having a LOT of PingXie feelings!! I personally saw Zhang Qiling’s role in this scene as slightly different from OP’s take so buckle up boys...we’re going meta.

More than anything, I read this scene as about Wu Xie, for the first time, accepting that it’s “time” for him to go (a bit ironically, since he wakes up and cheats death again). In the past, every time he’s been threatened or had his pending death dangled over his head like a brand, he has always insisted that he can’t die yet, that he has something left to do.

I feel, in the post-gas-bomb dream scene, that Zhang Qiling represents these things left to do, namely, the deepest ties holding Wu Xie to life. Not just because Wu Xie is in the middle of actively searching for ZQL when this scene takes place, but also because of the deep emotional (romantic?) bond they share.

When Wu Xie first turns around and sees ZQL at the dream campsite, his reaction isn’t joy. He’s devastated. He visibly chokes up. His face contorts.

I think he’s scared to leave ZQL behind, emotionally and physically. He knows ZQL is physically stuck right now, potentially relying on Wu Xie’s plan to save him. But also, Wu Xie knows that deep in ZQL’s heart it’s only Wu Xie. He’s ZQL’s “connection with this world;” he’s the person ZQL comes back for. Yet here he is: leaving, for good. Seeing ZQL now is a reminder of all the loose ends he is leaving behind (and too of the love they hold for each other that will be left one sided, with one point snuffed out).

What really gets me is this next facial expression, though. Wu Xie smiles. You can track exactly when his gratitude and joy at seeing ZQL again, here at the “end” (to say goodbye, to say something more, to do or be something more?) takes over. What a fitting send off, right? He told ZQL he would “accompany [him] to the end,” and now ZQL has accompanied him to his.

How does ZQL respond to this? He smiles, and he nods. He tells Wu Xie, it’s ok, you can follow them. You can go.

He absolves the strongest tie Wu Xie has to staying alive. Not out of meanness, not with bitterness, not with regret...but with love and understanding.

And Wu Xie?

He softens, gentles his posture...and turns back around. He is prepared to go, for the first time in the entire series. And ZQL has paved the way for that. It’s bittersweet, I feel.

In the end, it’s not ZQL who brings Wu Xie back. It’s ZQL who tells Wu Xie it’s ok to go.

And that is just as much a testament to the love between them.

#I also think it’s worth thinking about why it’s Zhang Qiling and not (for example) Uncle Sanxing #because arguably the motivating force of Wu Xie’s entire journey is his uncle #so why isn’t it his uncle who shows up to represent the ties holding him to life in his subconscious?#I think the answer lies in ZQL’s unique positioning #representing not only Wu Xie’s unfinished tasks (saving ZQL #finding thunder city) but ALSO Wu Xie’s most important emotional bond #and why isn’t it Pangzi who drunk Wu Xie said was the only one who stayed with him until the end?#because Pangzi isn’t ready to tell Wu Xie it’s ok to go (and because Wu Xie doesn’t need to hesr it from him. he knows Pangzi will be ok #(but ZQL is another story entirely)#anyway sorry this got WAY longer than I expected #o continue to post extremely niche pingxie content for an audience of 1 (me)#pingxie #zhang qiling #Wu xie #the lost tomb reboot #tltr #chongqi #jock liveblogs dmbj #images have alt text !! 🌸#dmetabj

I’m gonna go with random facts about my life. :D

1. I used to sing My Heart Will Go On in a rep show in Tunisia wearing a sequined gown and a replica of the Heart of the Ocean necklace, both loaned to me by a drag queen whose favourite movie was Titanic and who proclaimed himself my biggest fan after hearing me sing it. :D

2. My brother was born on my dad’s birthday. My dad got his youngest child of three, the only boy, his only son and heir, as a birthday present. Not only that but my dad turned 50 and my brother turned 18 on the same day. Their star sign is Gemini - the twins.

3. I won the school prize for poetry 4 times in the 7 years I was at my high school.

4. I met David Walliams in the cafe at the Tate Modern in London and had an entire conversation with him about feeding babies without realising it was him... I had sat down next to him in a rush to feed my hungry baby and I got talking to his mum and sister (who were sat with him) and him as I fed her but I never actually looked around at the man sat right next to me - it was only when he got up to go to the toilet and I looked up as he was walking back to the table that I realised who I’d been talking to. :D

5. I went to a Stargate convention when 6 months pregnant, wearing a home-made t-shirt that said “Another Stargate fan in the making” across my bump. When I had my photo taken with Jason Momoa he read my t-shirt, went “Awwww!” and posed for the photo with one arm around me and the other hand pointing at my tummy and with a big grin on his face. :D

ah thank you @yibobibo for tagging me ^^ these are always so much fun! also am avoiding going to sleep lol so here I go

1. What is the color of your hairbrush? umm this dark berry red? idk it’s a very old one and i should probably get a new one :’D

2. Name a food you never eat. hmm, am really not that picky with food. but i had an disagreement with meat loaf for a long time bc once as a kid i got sick while eating it and well. let’s say it came back up :) so i was a bit traumatized lol

3. Are you typically too warm or too cold? too cold! definitely ;; that’s why i hate living here when summer is like maybe two weeks and otherwise am freezing 24/7

4. What were you doing 45 minutes ago? umm watching ultimate note i think lol it has taken over my weekends

5. What’s your favorite candy bar? wow hmm. i think fazer’s dark choco + chili bar is amazing? otherwise maybe kinder’s bueno

6. Have you ever been to a professional sports game? yeah, a couple of times :’D to watch ice hockey lol bc it’s probably the only sport i enjoy... oh, and karate once too! that was cool somehow :o

7. What is the last thing you said out loud? “how are you like this” to heihua in ultimate note bc i dunno why but they keep. flirting with each other while bullying other ppl???

8. What is your favourite ice cream? chocolate! (or if it’s available, i absolutely adore sorbets or some very nice and sour berry flavors!)

9. What was the last thing you had to drink? peppermint tea ^^

10. Do you like your wallet? oh yeah :o i love the flower pattern on it and several ppl have complimented it a lot too? i can’t remember where i bought it but it’s nice and i always feel so fancy when i flip it out haha

11. What is the last thing you ate? some chocolate :’D why does every other answer seem to be somehow related to chocolate... (ah yes, bc i love it)

12. Did you buy any new clothes last weekend? hmm no. but am actually waiting to go shopping after christmas so that i can get new stuff ^^

14. What is your favorite flavor of popcorn? uh, the normal? is that butter then??? i don’t even know any other flavors

17. Do you take vitamins? nope, not really? should i?? maybe i should, at least some d vitamin... i miss seeing the sun, where is it ;o

19. Do you have a tan? umm no our summers are short as mentioned and i usually try to avoid getting tanned ^^’

20. Do you prefer chinese or pizza? chinese bc i get tired of pizza very fast

21. Do you drink your soda through a straw? yeah! i love the feeling of using a straw :’) also love it when they are funny colored or fancy or just very silly looking?

22. What color socks do you usually wear? very basic gray/white/black but then i have these random colorful socks too? and something like,,, deep turquoise. and dark wine red. and socks with flowers???

23. Do you ever drive above the speed limit? no i am a very law abiding citizen jfghjf (tho i drive very rarely bc i don’t own a car)

24. What terrifies you? ummmmm. let’s say randomly that i would absolutely freak out if one day i was closing my curtains and someone was looking at me through my window (which is highly unlikely bc i live in the third floor but my brain insists on this one on a daily basis)

25. Look to your left, what do you see? my empty tea cup, waiting to be taken away. so that i could sleep. sigh

26. What chore do you hate most? umm. vacuuming? it just feels like such a waste of time

27. What do you think of when you hear an Australian accent? i feel like the first two things that just pop into my head when someone mentions australia are troye sivan and @ashenwren ♥

28. What’s your favorite soda? coke or pommac (it’s this fruity soda? i used to call it as kid’s beer when i was young lol)

29. Do you go in a fast food place or just hit the drive thru? would usually go to the place but i guess for now it would be safer to go to the drive thru? idk

34. Last book you read? uhhh this book related to men’s studies where the author talked about his own experiences and views on being a man in this society that really much supports toxic masculinity and those toxic ways to show it (i cried)

35. Favorite day of the week? probably thursday currently bc ultimate note :’)

36. Can you say the alphabet backwards? uuuhh not right now probably but if you give me a moment i promise i can

37. How do you like your coffee? just like i like my men so,,, no. (lol that was an opportunity too perfect not to use)

38. Favorite pair of shoes? my pair of combat boots! or whatever you can call my black boots that make me feel badass but also fancy and comfortable

39. Time you normally get up? i try to make it around 10am but i just laze around in bed and i might actually get up at 11am-12pm

40. What do you prefer, sunrise or sunsets? both tbh, sunrise has its own vibe that’s completely different from sunset and both are just breathtaking! (no wonder my xicheng fic is very much full of/based on this day cycle symbolism smh)

41. How many blankets on your bed? one, i surprisingly enough get very hot during night (and not in the sexy way)

42. Describe your kitchen plates. light blueish gray? square. the smaller ones have these blue shapes on a white background, circle.

43. Describe your kitchen at the moment. clean too! i cleaned it yesterday :’D

45. Do you play cards? oh i did nothing else during the summer but play cards with my mom jfhgfghk it’s very relaxing somehow (also i love to teach ppl new games even if i know like,,, maybe five)

47. Can you change a tire? absolutely! i used to join my dad as a kid when he changed his tires :’D so i know the process and would be able to handle one i suppose

48. Your favorite state or province? i. don’t really have one? maybe the one on our west coast, i like the dialect over there

49. Favorite job you’ve had? i’ve only had like two? maybe? and i didn’t really enjoy either but does doing theater stuff as a hobby count? bc i’ve enjoyed that and it felt like a job at certain points :’)

Regarding History 4; isn‘t it too early to dismiss it? i saw that someone edited the translation of ‚turn each other gay‘ - so maybe it won’t be too bad

The edit you have in mind is probably @stebeee‘s post about the synopsis and while we can agree how difficult it is to translate slang or what the expression really means it doesn’t erase the ‘fujoshi’ side character and the ‘pretend to be gay’ storyline as well as, again, a step-brother love.

My thing is this: they could have had chosen everything else. We have same-sex-marriage now in Taiwan, it’s the first Asian country to do it! There are so many stories they could have told even in a way that appeases the straight target audience. Literally, so freaking many.

Maybe they will surprise us? I would love that. But now we have so many BL’s to chose from that I’m going to be picky about it. There are queer Filipino directors who claim BL storylines back to authentically tell queer stories, there are Japanese directors who chose to film important, slice-of-life queer stories who are heartwarming. And in between is everything from funny to sad to utterly romantic.

So tbh, I’m not going to watch it as fast as possible, I’m going to wait until it is done airing and then I will give it a chance (or when a mutual screams at me that it is THAT GOOD).

This is a negative outlook on it, I know, and as a big History fan it makes me sad but atm that’s the way I think about History 4 and for everyone excited about it I’m crossing my fingers that it will bring you joy.

民国奇探/My Roommate is a Detective Qiao Chusheng/Lu Yao

Spoilers (sort of) for ep 14, but I don’t really say anything about the case.

Qiao Chusheng finally manages to hear why Lu Yao fell out with his family. After hearing Lu Yao’s thoughts about the country and the future of it, he decides to ask a question that has more to do with their futures than that of the case or the country.

I watched ep 14, saw this scene, and finally couldn’t help myself.

Qiao Chusheng watches as Lu Yao walks up the stairs in the Tan Mansion, his slim figure casting surprisingly elegant shadows in the moonlight. But Chusheng, at least to himself, acknowledges he might be biased, but only a little. For every two women who don’t buy Lu San Tu’s chic act, there’s one hovering on the sidelines hoping he’ll talk to her. Chusheng is often the one to chase that last one away by wooing her himself until Lu Yao gives up.

“Why did you fall out with your family?” Chusheng asks, more to know for the sake of knowing than anything else. After all the things he’s done for Lu Yao, all the money and possessions and rules broken, Chusheng hopes he can be given this one piece of the strange puzzle known as Lu Yao.

Surprisingly, Chusheng is rewarded and Lu Yao’s voice rises and falls in cadence with each step. “My family is a long line of scholars,” Lu Yao says with the barest hint of pride in his voice. “And for the longest time, they were royalists.” Lu Yao’s hand hovers over the burnt banister as he continues his ascent. “When the Qing Dynasty fell, a host of scholars wondered what they should do.” Chusheng raises an eyebrow as Lu Yao stops in the middle of the stairs. “My family believed in serving the people.

“My two brothers were sent off to Beiyang to work in the government. I refused and told my dad it was because I am an egoist.” Chusheng rolls his eyes, but Lu Yao keeps going. “But the reality is I don’t think the future lies with the warlords. They’ll be swept away in the river of history.”

“So where do you think the future lies?” Chusheng asks. But another part of him wants to ask a different question, not of the future of the country, but of their futures.

“I don’t know. My father thinks in times like these, that we should serve the people and put our trust in the authorities. But the authorities change so fast and so frequently, how do you know you can trust them?”

Chusheng feels a twinge in his chest, regretting his position for the god-knows-how-manyth time. “So do you trust no authority?”

“Even if I wanted to, I don’t know who I should go pledge my loyalty to.” Lu Yao’s eyes wander up and down Chusheng. “There is yet to be a proper offer.” Lu Yao’s cheeks turn the faintest pink, something that could be overlooked in the darkness. But not overlooked by Chusheng.

“Pledge your loyalty to me,” Chusheng finds himself saying. The glare of Lu Yao’s flashlight is back in his face in an instant.

“Are you crazy? Haven’t I been turning down Mr. Bai’s invitations left and right?”

“I didn’t say join the Green Dragon Gang.” Chusheng knocks away the offending flashlight. “I said, trust me.”

“You take orders from Mr. Bai. You don’t serve the people, you serve him.”

“You don’t serve the people either, you serve yourself.”

“At least I’m not a liar, then. My conscience is clear!”

Chusheng sighs and puts his hand on Lu Yao’s shoulder and finds it isn’t shrugged off. “You know there hasn’t been a single case, where I didn’t do the right thing, despite Mr. Bai’s requests.” Chusheng leans in to whisper, although it is unnecessary in the quiet dark of the Tan Mansion. “And there hasn’t been a single time, where I didn’t do right by you.” Chusheng watches as Lu Yao shivers while his breath flows over Lu Yao’s ear. “So why not trust in me?”

“Y-You… You threw me in jail earlier!” Lu Yao then pouts, of all things, as if this would chastise Chusheng. But Chusheng has wiped too many crumbs and bits of sauce to be bothered by the protruding lower lip. He finds himself charmed instead.

“You left me no choice. Stealing police wages in front of all my men? That’s a new low, even for you.” Chusheng moves even closer still, Lu Yao’s pupils dilate even further, his breaths shallower. “But, if you swear your loyalty to me? I always take care of my people.”

“You don’t take care of your women very well,” Lu Yao mutters back. His gaze is no longer able to meet Chusheng’s and the pink on his cheeks has turned closer to red. “There’s always a new one on your arm.”

“Placeholders,” Chusheng says airly. “There’s someone I’d rather have by my side, but he’s always busy being rather difficult.” Chusheng steps back and Lu Yao starts gaping like a fish. “And I’ve even given him so many presents. I’m starting to think I’m just being used.”

“You! Y-You’re saying that all this time-”

Chusheng smiles, something soft, but it cuts straight to Lu Yao’s heart. “Maybe I am saying that.”

“You’re crazy!” Chusheng opens his mouth to defend himself and finds Lu Yao’s lips pressed against his lips instead. It’s too hasty, too rushed, and yet all too perfect. Lu Yao’s lips are soft and warm and Chusheng almost winces when he realizes how chapped his own lips are. Lu Yao presses on anyway and Chusheng cups Lu Yao’s face to hold him in place as if he’ll disappear if Chusheng lets go. But too soon, Lu Yao gently taps Chusheng’s arms and Chusheng lets go, even as his fingers ache to find their places again. “With all those women and dates around you, who’d think all those things were gifts to woo anyone,” Lu Yao says after pulling away, his breaths now returning to normal.

“You’re the genius detective here, aren’t you? I was waiting for you to figure it out.” Chusheng pulls Lu Yao’s face down again. “So, what do you say? Will you pick me?”

“I’m still here, aren’t I?”

“And you promise not to go running if someone gives you a better counter offer, Lu San Tu?”

“I don’t let just anyone call me San Tu, Inspector Qiao.” Lu Yao leans in closer.

“Does that mean you’re giving me permission?” Chusheng murmurs against Lu Yao’s lips.

Lu Yao pushes Chusheng back for a moment. “Will you let me perform the autopsy if I say yes?”

Chusheng sighs exasperatedly. “No.”

Lu Yao sighs and gives Chusheng a peck on the lips before giving him a peck on the cheek. “I guess I’ll give you permission anyway.” Lu Yao then swiftly runs up the rest of the stares. “Come on, the murder won’t solve itself.” Lu Yao’s eyes then sparkle with something other than intrigue. “Or… Have I placed my trust in the wrong person?”

“You’re really getting bold…” Chusheng mutters as he follows after, but the smile on his face is unmistakable.
