I think they should let Scooby Doo shows and movies hibernate for a few years.

I'm just saying, when it "died" and came back with Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost, and eventually What's New Scooby Doo, shit was great.

When "Shaggy and Scooby Doo Get A Clue" was bad, eventually the really fun movies like Abracadabra Doo and the series Mystery Inc came out.

Let Velma kill itself for a bit. Let the greedy WB execs fester in the rotting corpse of a show they gave no shits for. Leave it alone for like 5 years or more.

Come back and Scooby Doo has an anime with the most GOATed fight scenes and sakuga tier chase scenes. Some JJBA tier references to old bands. Scooby eats God, mistaking him for a sandwich.

Anyway Velma got greenlit for a second season and I know I didn't watch it. Be apathetic towards the bitch the rest of its miserable run and let the gang come back for the better down the road

Random Shaggy facts I discovered while making my Pissed Off Shaggy Compilation:

He plays a form of D&D which is called Crypts and Creatures in season 2 episode 4 of Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated (in this same episode some bitch called The Dreamweaver looks like David Bowie from Labyrinth and has Freddy Krueger's powers).

HE CAN FLY A FUCKING PLANE?! The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo and the Curse of The 13th Ghost. (Matthew Lillard was in a movie titled 13 Ghosts in 2001 literally one year before his role as Shaggy in Scooby-Doo 2002)

Listens to rock/metal music. Scooby-Doo! and KISS Rock and Roll Mystery and Big Top Scooby Doo! (Shaggy also mentioned that he liked polka in season 2 episode 6 of Mystery Inc.)

Is aware of the tropes that exist within the show and calls it out in numerous movies. Example: Scooby-Doo and the Cyberchase where he calls out the way the gang splits up.

In the Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? episode "A Haunt of a Thousand Voices!" the way that Shaggy talks about Matthew Lillard is a nod to the cast commentary of Scooby-Doo 2002 where Matthew Lillard kept talking about how great his performance was in the film.

He's had lots of romantic interests but none of them have lasted that long. (Googie was a one-off girlfriend created for Scooby-Doo and The Reluctant Werewolf, Crystal and Shaggy never officially got together during Scooby-Doo and The Alien Invaders, Mary Jane and Shaggy didn't end up fully together at the end of Scooby-Doo 2002, Madelyn Dinkley and Shaggy didn't end up becoming a couple at the end of Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo, the Shaggy x Velma plot in Mystery Inc was toxic, the other Shaggy x Velma plots in Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue! and Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster felt forced. I feel like you’ve answered this before but: what Scooby-Do stuff would you recommend to someone who wants to get into Scooby-Do?

hi!! i'm basing my recommendations mostly on what i think would be good entry points for people who haven't seen a lot of scooby-doo, so most of this is older (pre-2010s) scooby-doo stuff bc a lot of newer scooby media references older stuff. the first half of this list is tv shows, the second half is movies.

scooby-doo, where are you? (1969-1970)

this is the original series, i still love it so much - it's very 1969 but not entirely in a bad way, and i'd say it's an important watch if you want to really get into scooby-doo. most other scooby media ends up directly referencing it in some way (frequently by mentioning the most memorable antagonists from the series) and it gives you a nice idea of the characters and the general formula of scooby media. it's episodic so you don't have to watch it in any specific order, and you don't have to watch all of it if you don't want to - just a couple episodes should do the job for a good entry point!

what's new, scooby-doo? (2002-2006)

this was the first major scooby-doo series that returned to the original formula of "where are you?" and it's a good entry point because it follows the same formula as the original, just more 2000s this time. this one's also super cute, and it's highly episodic like the original, so you can watch it in whatever order. unlike the 1969-70 cartoon, though, mystery inc takes their adventures all across the world in this one, which adds a nice twist to the formula. this is probably my favorite of the scooby-doo tv shows!

a pup named scooby-doo (1988-1991)

the scooby gang is back, but they're in elementary school this time! this is a nice tv show because the animation style is absolutely adorable and the plots are for the most part very similar to the original, but there's a nice originality to the style and some fun running jokes that always make me smile. the theme song also goes so hard <3

scooby-doo and the witch's ghost (1999)

not only is this one of the best scooby-doo movies ever (animation, story, villain, twists, music, characterization of the gang, all peak!!) but it also introduces the hex girls who are basically a staple of scooby-doo lore. this is also a velma-centric film and it's just really, really good, i highly recommend! it's a solid entry point because it's of a pretty standard formula for maybe half of the scooby-doo movies that currently exist, but it's still nice and original and fun to watch.

scooby-doo: the mystery begins (2009)

this movie's pretty good because it provides a version of a backstory for mystery inc - of course, there are lots of different takes on the gang's backstory bc of how much scooby-doo stuff there is in the universe, but this is a good entry-point one. we meet the members of mystery inc in high school as they slowly start to become friends over the shared interest of solving a local mystery. it's a made-for-tv movie, so it's nice and short, and hayley kiyoko's also in it as velma which is cool as hell. of course, it's not perfect, but i still really like it! it also follows the standard scooby-doo formula pretty well, which is nice.

scooby-doo: abracadabra-doo (2010)

this is one of my favorites of the newer scooby-doo movies. it's also pretty standard and i think it introduces the scooby-doo formula and the gang pretty well. it's also neat because instead of a humanoid villain, the antagonist is a gryphon, which is pretty cool! it also takes place at a magic school. there's a lot of neat stuff in this that i really like, and it feels like the writers and animators had a lot of fun with it - i just really like this one tbh, highly recommend!

also, here's a list of my top 10 favorite pieces of scooby-doo media! it's not quite the same as what i think would be good entry points, so i wanted to include it separately.

Crystal & Whirlen and Calvin Curdles & Alma Rumblebuns have very adorable side romances in Abracadabra Doo. I enjoy Crystal & Whirlen individually and I think their interactions are so cute! The bg behind Alma and Calvin is perfect and v romantic.

THE OG MYSTERY INC from SDMI. It would have been really interesting to see more background on Ricky & Cassidy & Brad & Judy & Professor Pericles. There’s so many interesting dynamics between the core group, especially concerning how everything fell apart. The way they came together only to fall apart later on has so many details that never got fully explored but would have been legit fascinating to see!!! I was also always curious about how the five of them connected to Fred Jones Sr./what that dynamic was like. :)

For totally platonic relationships: I love Crystal & Amber from Alien Invaders, Penelope Bailey and her dad from WNSD’s Recipe for Disaster, and for some reason the dynamics of the band from Simple Plan and the Invisible Man is cute to me. The relationships between the fathers and daughters in Ghoul School also always really warmed my heart (esp The Mummy & Tanis 🥰).

THE HEX GIRLS!! they really deserve the chance to be developed further and I would die and kill for a piece of media that’d get to explore their relationships with each other further.

Surprisingly, I was also pretty touched by Muttley and Dick Dastardly’s bestie-ship in Scoob!

Captain Cutler from SDWAY!! (and him in BCSD, my little guy). He’s my fav of the iconic WAY villains. His outfits, his vibe, love it!

I'm not really a scooby nerd by choice, but there is a bunch of Scooby on this month so it does transform me into a Reluctant Werenerd.

I've missed a bunch of the straight to DVD features, and it's probably for the best because I notice a trend among movies/shorts from around the last 10ish years. But due to Scoobtober, I see them on tv sometimes.

They look very, very nice! They're animated pretty well, too. BIG BUT, their writing is either mid to "we fucking hate this franchise and want it to die of dysentery in the worst part of town possible, but a buck is a buck and our economy would rather see us starve in the streets than actually help us survive" tier- which sucks for a franchise I've loved since before I could talk, and especially sucks when they twist the characters to be weird and just plain mean versions of themselves, but I get it, you gotta eat, and I'm sure you'd rather be making your own stories.

Sure there's some fun pieces of this era like Abracadabra Doo, but then there's awful/insulting pieces like Return to Zombie Island that actively insult the original movie and audience, or the WWE or Kiss crossover movies that... well, I'm sure someone had fun making and pitching those movies, can't say the same about watching them. Can't say the same about them digging their heels in about the gang being teens despite referencing movies when they were clearly adults with jobs and then having men old enough to be Daphne's father try to or actually make out with her. Thats... yeah.

Basically I see that art style and I'm like "oh boy! Scoob!... wait. Shit this is going to suck."

We need another Red Shirt saga or another Zombie Island Witch's Curse Alien Invaders era of Scoob. Or heck, another Mystery Inc- maybe less teenage angst/hormones and making Velma a bitch, though.
