Not everything has a profound symbolic meaning, but oh boy do I prefer it when it does! Give me those delicious symbolisations world!

I've always had a hard time putting into words what I think Nami represents thematically to Luffy, but I'm going to try. However I need to talk about the rest of the crew first so my visual makes sense. Let's picture Luffy in the middle of the crew with everyone else surrounding him.
So we know Sanji & Zoro are the wings right? Sanji is there to nurture Luffy's inner child and make sure his heart never turns cold. Zoro is shaping the man Luffy is becoming while pushing him to get stronger so he can protect what is precious to him. So visually I would put Zoro on his right and Sanji on his left.
Jimbei I would put directly behind Luffy. He serves as much needed wisdom to fall back on when Luffy is out of his league or when he simply doesn't have the age or experience to deal with a situation. A trusted advisor who is ready to catch Luffy should he fall.
Everyone else I would put directly in front of Luffy. They're spreading the message of the future king. Paving the path so their captain can reach his destination. Their stories of how they ended up with him proof of why he is the most worthy. His followers ready and willing to die just so Luffy has a shot at the prize. Who is the one standing directly in front of luffy though? Leading the front and perhaps even further up? That's Nami.
Nami & her village are the first people Luffy ever liberated. To have her entire worldview turned around and her hope restored. Through Nami's arc in Arlong Park we as the fans get to see exactly what Luffy is capable of and what he is here to do. Luffy is Nami's hero so she will do whatever it takes to get him to his end goal. Being the guiding light of the crew so they never lose their way. Both literally and metaphorically.
As long as Nami still believes in Luffy nothing can stop him. That not all hope is lost. Her mere existence is proof that Luffy deserves the title of pirate king.
