is anyone gonna talk about how most of the dead characters will consist of nonwhite characters on the show (yj) now or what? the treatment of minorities kinda suck right now. travis died in the adult timeline. adam (the mexican coded character) was killed by shauna. javi died in the wilderness. kristen 'accidentally' died by falling off of a cliff. misty killed that reporter in the first season. and all these talks abt mari dying and possibly akilah dying and im like...? if you gonna do that you'd at least have to really really write well for lottie and tai's characters when your main cast consist of predominantly white characters alongside a handful of 'dead' nonwhite characters.

the writers wrote themselves into a corner honestly but as ever it was and still is an opportunity for them to like truly build up the horror by connecting with who the characters represent whether they want to accept it or not because im like very convinced they understand who taissa and lottie could represent but they prefer not to touch it out of fear of coming off racist probably but the fact that they remaines neutral about acknowledging their race as more than a wink like with the scenes of taissa becoming a senator and she was the only main character of color, it's fucking insane that we're dealing with tokenism in 2023 because the writers aren't brave enough to simply ask input in their white story like tawny cypress who fucking loves horror and her craft is there, simone kessell too like these are not amateurs if they don't want to ask for writers of color in their writing room and meanwhile we have jasmine savoy brown asking for scenes with akilah and taissa because that shit isnt even being thought of, its fucking weird it's what it is, but leaving that behind the fact that fandom can be so vindictive without acknowledging that the story does request like actual critical fucking thinking of its pieces however superficial the text could be at times like that is something fucking requested of the damn text considering just what people clearly come for which is shauna and jackie like suddenly all nuance is there for them, gone the minute people ask to pay attentio attention to the imbalance of the depth and exploration of the perspectives of the characters of color in a survival setting as if it could ever be paired up so easily with whiteness even as kids, way before the teenage years, that shifts, and like fuck, the fact that we have been prevented from seeing tai's family? lottie's? even the other dead yellowjackets families???? what does that say of thr focus of the story and the failures of the writers to present a balanced story like the scale is rigged, it always is but even so obviously presented here as you are, all we get from white fans is apathy, like that doesn't mirror the cruelty that is being commented on one way or another....... sick shit no lies......

and it is been a few of my mutuals and some posts in the tags which have acknowledged it as such and for all that fandom claims that is a space to speculate and expand on the text, once again, true colors are shown and instead of trying to build on the characters of color, they continously pull them down, like mary, like kristen, like travis not even in the way the story did as a tool for her suffering, he's erased for convenience like fuck.... the story shows how much it took to dehumanize each other to that point and i know it's fiction like i don't fucking teach it for a living but in a story that asks you to see the humanity in their cruelty and reason and childhood, people in the tags and fandom spaces of this show find it easy to dehumanize who they deem less worthy for free like... girl look at the fucking text ffs....

XINGESE ROY SUPREMACY!!

omg. thank you for asking about headcanons. yes I have SO MANY. many of which I cannot say yet (just wait to get spammed with xingese roy things later this year). I'm Chinese American myself so I project SO much onto him (we love our Ownvoices narratives here)!

On this post I mainly talk about what it's like to have Xingese heritage in Amestris. How it affected Roy growing up, and how that reflects Amestrian society as a whole. A little bit about how he starts to reconnect with his culture. If you want lighter, more fun headcanons about Roy being connected to Xingese culture:

My main thing about Xingese Roy: while it's technically canon compliant because it doesn't directly contradict anything in canon, it couldn't be canon because being of a different race in Amestrian society would have vast impacts on Roy's character and on the way he interacts with others, especially as a military officer. If Arakawa intended for Roy to be Xingese, there's no way she wouldn't have mentioned it. That being said, it's the best headcanon ever when done right.

Like the general fanon goes, Roy's father is Amestrian and the brother to Chris Mustang; Roy's mother came to Amestris from Xing. She didn't exactly immigrate by choice, but nonetheless she resents Xing and convinces herself that Amestris is the best country and she needs to be a good citizen. (She also happens to be one of my favorite OCs ever but I will stop myself from infodumping about her backstory.)

If you can't tell by me crying over I Can Only Write My Name by Will Jay, a theme I like to use a lot is assimilation. Erasing one's own culture, erasing parts of their identity to fit in. When Roy's mom showed up in Amestris as a teenager having lost everything, she learned to assimilate. Even if she visibly looked like a foreigner, she could beat away her accent, learn the customs and culture of the new country, and erase her life from before.

And that's how she raised Roy before she died. Assimilate. Be good. Our heritage is not important. Show loyalty to Amestris. Show patriotism. You look Xingese, but you are not Xingese, you are Amestrian. You have to prove it to the world so that they accept you.

You can say Amestris is diverse in cultures, not because people chose to move there, but because they're an imperialist power. The Amestrians conquered other countries and melded them into their own. They love it when they take over a smaller country and its people blend into Amestrian society. (Ishval didn't. The Amestrians didn't like that.)

"Foreign" is synonymous with "enemy." Amestris has enemies on all sides - Drachma, Creta, Aerugo. Xing isn't a military threat because it's separated by a desert, but it's still foreign and unknown. And that's why young Roy Mustang can't say he's Xingese - he isn't a foreigner. He's a good Amestrian boy and will grow up to help his country.

To Roy's friends and classmates, Roy is a perfect token. He looks visibly Xingese (visibly foreign), but he's smart, great at alchemy, and patriotic. He loves being Amestrian and wants to help his country when he grows up. Roy Mustang is a great prop when someone needs to say, "I have a friend who's a foreigner so I can't be racist." (Roy isn't a foreigner and hates being called one, but he likes being useful.)

Dehumanization is something else I think about a lot. Especially with FMA. State alchemists are called "human weapons." These people, or anyone really, are only as valuable as they are useful. The state doesn't see its military (and certainly not its civilians) as people - they are weapons to further their goals of expansion and conquest.

Civilians might see each other as people. But why would they see foreigners that way? But when their nation conquers a new territory, or someone flees to their country, the outsider might have use. (Ishval did not.) The outsider might have something to contribute to society. The outsider might reject their own heritage to prove that Amestris is superior. The outsider could be a golden boy, a prop to show that despite one's blood, a boy like Roy Mustang can be the perfect Amestrian citizen.

So, just as his dead mother wanted him to, Roy Mustang rejects the blood she gave him. She washed herself away. And it will be many years, after Roy becomes a good Amestrian soldier and creates a river of Ishvalan blood, after years of unlearning everything the state taught him, that he meets some Xingese children tied to his mother's past. Only then does he start to recover what his mother washed away.

ok ok jokes, ill go more in depth... some of this is taken from things ive written before but not posted. also for anyone reading this im non bee nary so know that im not trying to describe the experiences of different identities in first-person, i’m basing this off of both my own and my friends’ experiences... none of this is “OMG YES CHARACTER ANGST >:))” but rather depicting personal struggles in fictional characters, so just know that  the more difficult subjects that may be covered are not there just to see the character in pain, but rather to think about their eventual resilience against it and development afterwards

for geralt and yennefer i have more specific reasons why i think being transgender actually fits with their canonical characters & related story arcs, and then for the rest i have headcanons and maybe some reasoning but not a lot.

geralt: geralt already represents how a struggle with toxic masculinity and expectations of masculinity can influence one who wants to be seen as masculine to deny and bury their emotions. him being trans develops upon the aspect of his struggle with emotions, ive seen my friends who are transmasculine / myself when i used to ID as transmasculine struggle with showing emotions bc of feeling like you’re going to be misgendered if you shed a single tear. in canon, we already learn that kaer morhen has a bit of a macho culture (just fyi eskel and lambert and coen are trans too now, don’t go getting any idea that those guys are cis) and i believe that the “witchers have no emotions” thing is like 5% actual biology and 95% being raised to fight and not to feel. vesemir is a good father but he just wasn’t very emotionally nurturing, it’s the caste’s way of raising kids that geralt breaks out of.

i think geralt’s self-image also speaks a lot to the feelings of harsh internal transphobia. he constantly others himself from others and feels like people view him as different, which is metaphorical for any marginalized group under the sun, but also is very common for lgbt ppl. again this is smth ive really struggled with within the past few years so im just projecting/know what it feels like and feel that how geralt sees himself in canon is similar to a view suffering from internalized transphobia.

geralt's character already redefines manhood because he has to learn what it means to be a good father. and i think him being trans would be representative of his constant learning and growth as a person, yet also somewhat involved with his self loathing and feeling like just Him Existing is an affront ... but of course he unlearns this with time and love from others and all of his character development

yennefer: yennefer’s whole backstory revolves around defining who she is and defying the people who mistreated her and told her she was nothing. canonically yennefer of vengerberg is the story of the successful self-made woman... her life as janka she would rather forget, no one calls her by that name, and no one ever would because its not who she is nor who i think she ever was. 

shes incredibly strong-willed and knows what she wanted from life but some things are terrifying to reach out for, like love and acceptance. yennefer has a conflict with love and being loved because that was never a safe topic for her ... (also sapkowski handled this specifically poorly imo, but:) yennefer canonically struggles with being loved for who she is. i think she deals so much with her previous abuse and again, expectations from parents, and coming to terms with the fact that she survived it all. also this isnt even touching upon her arc regarding motherhood. wanting to give a child your everything and everything that you never had... the love and kindness that no one gave you...

ciri: ciri hesitated to ever identify with “girl” or “boy,” she’s also i think the representation of childhood in general, she’s naturally curious about gender presentation as she ages and just never really cares to commit to gender. i think she’d say she was a girl but only reluctantly bc she just doesn’t care much.

ok in a more serious context i think he’s a nonbinary guy, i think him being trans might explain why he has way more friendships than relationships with family members. dandelion, like yennefer, is also someone that had to define who he was for himself, i mean for one his stage persona of dandelion is entirely an artist’s creation/hyperbole of himself, i think he also had to think abt his inner identity too

his gender is also just “your friend that comes to your house and eats all ur chips and drinks all ur beer and passes out on top of you on the couch”

milva: ok unfortunately i currently think milva is the token non-trans friend (she’s nonbinary just doesnt think of herself as trans) but it’s only because her major arc in baptism of fire revolves around her pregnancy and miscarriage and just bc she is not trans doesn’t mean she doesn’t go through her own difficult struggling process surrounding her womanhood. she struggles enormously throughout the series and in her backstory with defining herself between two rigid identities: the feminine maria and the cutthroat milva. in her talk with geralt, she reveals how she feels trapped between these two identities and feels like they cannot coexist. i feel like she’s a nonbinary/gender non-conforming butch* lesbian whose struggles with sexuality intersect her struggles with gender and what it means to her to be a gnc woman. also you have to consider that milva was raised in a small village in lower sodden so she understood gender in the very strict roles ascribed to men and women, so she felt like she couldn’t be a woman unless she was this very traditional idea of what a woman is “supposed to be like,” which she’s both been trying to shape herself to be and also running away from simultaneously. she learns to accept herself within the hansa bc they love and support her for who she is, and she doesn’t need to be strictly feminine or masculine to be understood by them

* i know the terms nonbinary and gnc and butch didn’t exist in the 1260s tyvm, i’m just saying this as how i interpret her in a modern context

regis: gender is a human sociological construct so basically don’t ask him unless you’re prepared to listen for 20 minutes. vampires can exist noncorporeally so they can exist without gender, also i hc the telepathic vampiric language is nongendered as it’s a transmission of pure thought, will, and force, so it doesn’t even use any grammar. i also hc that vampires just appear the way they feel in terms of appearance and age (e.g., regis at around 300 when he died still looked 25 bc he was as stupid as a 25 year old, now he’s calmer and understands more, so he looks middle-aged). when chilling out with humans regis will be referred to as a man bc that’s just how he appears but it’s an identity he had to learn about and adopt, not something he was assigned. most vampires look androgynous anyways bc they just feel androgynous, how are you gonna feel a gender when you don’t know what a gender is... if you HAD to understand him with human labels / put it in a modern context (like if i was making an modern real life AU) i’d say he’s a nonbinary trans man. 

cahir: much like geralt i think cahir’s story is one of living up to expectations, but cahir’s actually takes it a step further because his major motivation in his backstory is trying to prove to his mother that he can be a good son that will make her proud and gain honor for the family... he seeks validation from external sources but faces ruin when he learns that war is not the way to prove one’s prowess and skill

angouleme: shes trans and i simply say so bc shes very cool and funny and i dont think a cis person could be this cool and funny. also i think the story of a runaway teen who was abandoned by her biological family and found solace in a new family is both very good and featured in a lot of trans ppl’s narratives. she kind of exudes this “im finally at a point in my life where i’m safe and cared for, i can start HRT now, let’s gooOOoooOOooo” energy.

At the inn, 6 Losers were sitting around continuing on with their reunion. Eddie, Bev and Richie snuggled against each other on the couch while the others stood around.

Bill was talking to Mike on the many ways they could potentially kill IT. Ben was talking to Richie and Eddie and Beverly were complaining about their spouses.

Bang!

The sound of a door being thrown against a wall made all the Losers jump. Mike was ready to use an empty whiskey bottle as a weapon but in walked Stanley.

“Sorry I’m late. I was um, I didn’t want to come but I figured that I’d be killed if I didn’t.” Stan explained.

“Good to see you, Stan the Man,” piped Richie being the first to engulf the thin shaken man in a hug.

“You too Richie.” Stan whispered as he returned the comforting hug.

The group of friends caught up with Stan, telling him what they’ve been up to and them learning that Stan was happily married and that she was a teacher and he was an accountant.

All of his doubts and fears went away and was comforted by his old friends. Just like he was when they were kids.

Not once did any of them hammer him on not wanting to come. They knew what happened down in the sewers 27 years ago. If there was going to be one person that didn’t show up, it was Stan and everyone understood if he didn’t.

At the Neibolt house, the following day, Eddie and Stan tried to keep each other safe and siking themselves up. As much as they waned to believe that they could face the clown again, they didn’t want to die. Stan loved his wife and his job, he didn’t want to lose that.

Eddie on the other hand, wanted to file for divorce papers so he didn’t have to put up with Myra and tell Richie how he truly felts.

The two walked side by side into the house, Eddie took a shaky breath but continued forward. Stan on the other hand, stopped dead in his tracks.

He had not gone into this place voluntarily, the first time he went in was because Eddie, Richie and Bill were attacked. The second time he was forced in because of Bill wanting to kill the clown. Now he walked in voluntarily and his fear rose.

Everything came back.

As they dropped down into Pennywise’s lair, in the heart of the sewers. Eddie freaked out, which inevitably made Stan panic.

If Eddie can’t, then I can’t, Stan thought.

He watched as Richie stopped him, “You’re braver than you think, Eds.” Richie said.

“You too Stan. You both can do this.” Beverly said. Stan gave her a weak half smile and forced himself through the hole in the floor.

It was just as dark, cold and wet as he remembered. He held the flashlight up in front of him and slowly followed Ben and Mike into the lair. Squeezing through two rocks, he hauled himself with the help of Richie.

But the fear caught back up with him. “I’m sorry guys but I can’t do this.” Stan panicked.

“F-f-for gods s-s-s -” Bill paused. “For. Gods. Sake. Stan.”

“What Bill? Say what you have to say to me then I’m leaving!”

“Y-y-you l-leave, y-y-ou will d-die. I-It’s the w-ay that IT w-works.”

Stan refused to believe that. He refused to accept the fact that if he left Derry he’d be killed by IT ... somehow.

So he was still going to leave, he’ll just stay put in the shitty, asbestos ridden inn.

“Oh my gosh! You’re so annoying!” Stan yelled. Knowing that he’d gone too far but he didn’t care. He wasn’t hoing to put himself in harms way and for what? So a psychopathic clown could potentially kill him? No!

“Stan.” Richie warned.

“No Richard. I just shouldn’t have come. This was a fucking mistake. Hope you kill IT.”

With that Stan left Neibolt and stayed at the inn waiting for the Losers return but they never did. When he checked himself out a day later, he saw that their cars were gone, all except Eddie’s.

As they all watched Stan leave, Bill was almost in tears. His stutter was something that he was ashamed of and was insecure about. Stan knew that, yet he still said those 3 words.

“Bill, let’s kill this motherfucking clown.” Richie bellowed.

“We don’t need him Bill.” Mike said placing a hand on Bill’s shoulder.

“Ignore him Bill, he’s in fear and pissed off. He probably didn’t mean it. Forget about him. We’re here for you.” Beverly soothed.

Something in Bill’s mind snapped he took everything from Mike and set up the ritual like Mike had shown him. One by one, each club member placed their token into the can.

“Yippee Kayay motherfu-“ Richie said before falling into the deadlights.

“Hey dickwad!” Eddie yelled, drawing Pennywise’s attention towards him.

Bill didn’t like what he was watching and as soon as Richie was brought out and Eddie celebrating. He knew what was about to happen.

They helped him and he was going to return the favour. He ran towards the and just in time too before Pennywise’s claw penetrated Eddie.

“Holy shit, you save me.” Eddie breathed.

“Yeah, you saved me last time Rich, you too Eds.” Bill said. “Shit, sorry, Eddie.”

“Nah, I actually liked being called Eds. Myra called me Eddie or Eddiebear so Eds feels right.” Eddie explained. There was a look in Richie’s eyes that Bill had seen before and knew all too well.

Hope.

“You’re a fucking pussy!” Bill yelled at the clown.

“Nobody likes you.” Ben fired, not wanting to curse.

“You’re just a clown.” Beverly said to really finish the job and that’s when Bill reached into Pennywise’s chest and pulled out his heart.

The heart still pumped in the palm of his hand. With one final cackle from the deflated clown, Bill squished the heart.

They all ran out of the house as it started collapsing. Just as they watched it fall, the unknown weight and stale air that they all subconsciously had, lifted.

Even though they lost 22 years, they had each other now.

“Why don’t we all go and get our cars and meet at the Quarry?” Bill suggested.

“Yes!” Richie said pumping the air. “Actually once we get through town, Eds and I may be a little late. I wanna show him something.”

“You’re gonna show him that thing?” Bill asked, Richie nodded joyously.

The walk through town was calming and felt nostalgic. As they passed an old window front, they all stopped, just like they did 27 years ago.

Except this time Eddie didn’t have vomit on him, Bev didn’t have dried mud covering parts of her face and stan wasn’t in the picture.

The dead streets were once again filled with life. unlike a day ago when the streets were literally dead. This was what freedom felt like. Nothing holding them back, minds completely filled with childhood memories and the confidence to remove themselves from situations that they hated.

But the weight of losing a dear dear friend laid heavily on each Losers’ shoulder. Stan was Richie and Bill’s oldest friend, Stan was the first to know about Richie’s crush on Eddie and had helped Bill maintain his stutter to a couple a words a sentence.

Stan was everyone’s go to guy when they needed help. Any sane person would hate it but Stan loved it. It made him feel loved and wanted.

But when those words fell from his mouth, only moments ago, everyone stood behind Bill. If anyone picked on one of their friend’s insecurities, they’d stand by that person and shun the person that attacked them. It killed everyone to shun Stan but especially Bill.

Stan didn’t know whether or not Eddie survived until one day he was scrolling through Facebook and saw a post from Richie announcing his engagement to Eddie. As well as Eddie announcing that he and Richie had adopted a beautiful baby girl. Every Loser was there at the engagement party but Stan. All because he left them to face a killer clown with out him.

He knew he deserved it and all he said on both Facebook posts was congratulations Reddie.
