There is something amazing about a mechanical device that can be fully disassembled, cleaned,lubricated, and restored back to a fully operational state. This reel is 50 years old. It was pretty crusty and dirty. Now it performs and (mostly) looks like new.
These reels in particular have a reputation/following. But the amazing part is that the company (Abu Garcia from Sweden) has always been completely helpful to their customers. They have always included/provided a full schematic. Proper manuals. Parts are readily available from multiple outlets. These reels were built to last forever.
It has been such a satisfying journey of figuring it all out.

ive tried and failed to put this into words before but in light of today's war crime: i feel like this is a watershed moment in the coming of fascism, in terms of the level of barbarity that is normalized. western civilization in the post ww2 order largely tried to distance itself from its own barbarism, through media filtering and creating a physical disconnect between the drone operator and the yemeni wedding he bombs. that's also why Hamas' initial assault was deemed so barbaric: they looked people in the eye while they shot them, unlike civilized people who sit in a comfortable chair in diego garcia when they wipe out families in the middle east. even atrocities like abu ghraib: the prison was kept secret and when it came out it was actually a scandal and there was a mock investigation and prosecution.
this line doesn't exist anymore. every day there's new videos of atrocities committed in person by idf soldiers, many many of them even filmed and put online by themselves, and instead of being critized (for letting the mask slip) they're defended and even celebrated
