I wanted to make a post about my experiences with gender because not everyone's experiences are the same and if anyone relates to my feelings at all, I want you to know you aren't alone.

My perception of my gender is that it has a mind of its own and it's almost a burden for me, a small voice in my head that keeps me stuck on it. It's a repetitive voice, too. All of my friends have their genders figured out, while mine changes constantly and I get judgement because I don't have shit figured out. One minute I'm agender, another I'm genderfluid, non-binary, a man, and so on. My parents don't try anymore, to understand. In their minds, I am a transmasculine man because that was my first choice of gender. This world we were born in is fucked up, and always will be. People expect us to know who we are and not need a change or need a new label because we're confused and unhappy as who we were.

My gender, to me, is a monster. I dress feminine, people call me a woman, and I hate that. I dress masculine, people call me a man, but damn I hate that too. I dress androgynous, people stop referring to me in a gendered way, but guess what, I hate that just as much. When I finally decide who I am and announce it to my friends, and they start calling me what I ask, I become uncomfortable and dysphoric. I can't use a label, but if I don't find a label, I'm miserable. All I've figured out about my identity is that I'm a part of the voidpunk community, but I still feel gender.

My physical features kill me too. My body has always been fairly non-gendered. I barely have a chest, I'm covered in hair, I have a mustache, I have a masculine jaw, I have big hands, broad shoulders, my body is generally disproportionate, but I have female genitalia. I look in the mirror every day and HATE myself because I'll never look how I want, because I don't know what I want. One day I want to look fully like a woman, one day I want to look fully like a man, and I can't have both. Some people would DIE for my body, but I don't want it and it was what I was born with.

This burden I carry of never knowing who I am, I don't think it will ever go away, no matter how I express myself. Sometimes, I hate that I was even born 'human'. It would be so much easier to me a fucking animal and not have to understand gender and know that you look 'wrong', that you weren't born 'right', that you're a 'monster' hiding in, what you can only assume is your, human skin.

But we aren't like them, us who can't identify our own face, we may have been born like them, but we aren't like them anymore. We're here together and we can think of ourselves as our own beings, separate from this society that expects us to decide who we are and fit under their umbrella. We will walk in the rain, happily. Maybe find a puddle to look at our reflections, to finally see us. See our faces and not a distorted body that the world gave us.

I think one of the biggest tragedies of Laios & Falin and their relationship is how much his actions impact her life. But like. Specifically how much they WOULDN’T impact her life as much if they weren’t both stuck in such a shitty abusive situation.

This part of the Falin-tries-makeup daydream hour comic is what got me thinking about it again because truly it just... it seems like such a like an offhand comment that I'm sure Laios didn't mean to be cruel or anything. That's just like. A little kid not thinking about what they are saying. ESPECIALLY when the kid in question is Laios.

But man they depended on each other SO much as kids. Too much. It really feels like they didn't have any other source of positive reinforcement, or anyone else to share themselves with. So of course an offhand comment like that has a huge impact on Falin.

Or this little bit from one of the flashbacks:

This tears me apart. Do you think it tears him apart to think about? I think it does. I think Laios holds every small failure to care for Falin against himself.

And then there's the Bigger stuff. The way that him coping with his own trauma ended up impacting her.

Like his interest in monsters. Like him going to find a ghost, and accidentally revealing Falin's magic to the whole village in the process.

Like him needing to leave. And leaving her behind.

He shaped her life so much, and he carries so much guilt for it. And again, there should have been other people there to help. The same things that made Laios need to leave home are the things that made his leaving so hard on Falin. She ate alone after that. She shouldn't have had to eat alone just because Laios wasn't there.

She was 9 when he left for school, and he was 11.

Nine. And Laios feels like he failed her because he didn't stand by her through this better. As an eleven year old.

Both of these kids deserved so much better from the world.

Today my therapist introduced me to a concept surrounding disability that she called "hLep".

Which is when you - in this case, you are a disabled person - ask someone for help ("I can't drink almond milk so can you get me some whole milk?", or "Please call Donna and ask her to pick up the car for me."), and they say yes, and then they do something that is not what you asked for but is what they think you should have asked for ("I know you said you wanted whole, but I got you skim milk because it's better for you!", "I didn't want to ruin Donna's day by asking her that, so I spent your money on an expensive towing service!") And then if you get annoyed at them for ignoring what you actually asked for - and often it has already happened repeatedly - they get angry because they "were just helping you! You should be grateful!!"

And my therapist pointed out that this is not "help", it's "hLep".

Sure, it looks like help; it kind of sounds like help too; and if it was adjusted just a little bit, it could be help. But it's not help. It's hLep.

At its best, it is patronizing and makes a person feel unvalued and un-listened-to. Always, it reinforces the false idea that disabled people can't be trusted with our own care. And at its worst, it results in disabled people losing our freedom and control over our lives, and also being unable to actually access what we need to survive.

So please, when a disabled person asks you for help on something, don't be a hLeper, be a helper! In other words: they know better than you what they need, and the best way you can honor the trust they've put in you is to believe that!

Also, I want to be very clear that the "getting angry at a disabled person's attempts to point out harmful behavior" part of this makes the whole thing WAY worse. Like it'd be one thing if my roommate bought me some passive-aggressive skim milk, but then they heard what I had to say, and they apologized and did better in the future - our relationship could bounce back from that. But it is very much another thing to have a crying shouting match with someone who is furious at you for saying something they did was ableist. Like, Christ, Jessica, remind me to never ask for your support ever again! You make me feel like if I asked you to call 911, you'd order a pizza because you know I'll feel better once I eat something!!

Edit again: I made an optional follow-up to this post after seeing the responses. Might help somebody. CW for me frankly talking about how dangerous hLep really is.

#hlep #original #mental health #my sympathies and empathies to anyone who has to rely on this kind of hlep to get what they need. #the people in my life who most need to see this post are my family but even if they did I sincerely doubt they would internalize it #i've tried to break thru to them so many times it makes my head hurt. so i am focusing on boundaries and on finding other forms of support #and this thing i learned today helps me validate those boundaries. the example with the milk was from my therapist. #the example with the towing company was a real thing that happened with my parents a few months ago while I was age 28. 28! #a full adult age! it is so infantilizing as a disabled adult to seek assistance and support from ableist parents. #they were real mad i was mad tho. and the spoons i spent trying to explain it were only the latest in a long line of #huge family-related spoon expenditures. distance and the ability to enforce boundaries helps. haven't talked to sisters for literally the #longest period of my whole life. people really believe that if they love you and try to help you they can do no wrong. #and those people are NOT great allies to the chronically sick folks in their lives. #you can adore someone and still fuck up and hurt them so bad. will your pride refuse to accept what you've done and lash out instead? #or will you have courage and be kind? will you learn and grow? all of us have prejudices and practices we are not yet aware of. #no one is pure. but will you be kind? will you be a good friend? will you grow? i hope i grow. i hope i always make the choice to grow. #i hope with every year i age i get better and better at making people feel the opposite of how my family's ableism has made me feel #i will see them seen and hear them heard and smile at their smiles. make them feel smart and held and strong. #just like i do now but even better! i am always learning better ways to be kind so i don't see why i would stop
