The Purpose of Plain Text?
I originally put this in a reblog, but it deserves to be its own post, too.
On the topic of plain text: This is not an official word you’ll find in accessibility guides. In general, text on websites is already accessible to screen readers with very few exceptions. Screen readers are literally made to read text.
These exceptions inlude
Copy paste fonts (these generally read as gibberish to a screen reader)
Text with alternating upper case and lower case letters (like in that one Sponge Bob meme)
Rainbow text in the web/browser version of tumblr (This is specific to tumblr. Rainbow text in general is not a problem and can be implemented in accessible ways. It’s even accessible in the tumblr apps.)
Images/ screenshots of text (these aren't actually text, they're images)
Stuff like small text, big text, italics, fonts, and colored text, are not an issue for screen readers. I have never heard of a screen reader user having problems with these, and no official accessibility guidelines have restrictions on these.
You do not need to provide plain text versions of formatted text for the sake of screen reader users. I do not know where this myth comes from, but it’s untrue.
However, there are cases where providing plain text makes sense. For example, when reblogging a post with small text, I generally copy it in normal font size in my reblog. This is not for screen reader users. This is for people who sight-read who cannot read small font. Providing plain text versions of colored text is also often done for the sake of people with migraines or eye strain.
It is good to make posts accessible to people with migraines, but it help no one to incorrectly conflate this with screen reader accessibility. These are two separate accessibility issues.
TL;DR Screen readers can read formatted text without any problems, but people who sight read (with their eyes) can sometimes benefit from plain text.

Not sure how to describe this, but I'm not a fan of making fun of image descriptions that describe the character/person in the image by their physical attributes instead of by their name because they should so obviously already know who that character/person is

One of my biggest nitpicks in fiction concerns the feeding of babies. Mothers dying during/shortly after childbirth or the baby being separated form the mother shortly after birth is pretty common in fiction. It is/was also common enough in real life, which is why I think a lot of writers/readers don't think too hard about this. however. Historically, the only reason the vast majority of babies survived being separated from their mother was because there was at least one other woman around to breastfeed them. Before modern formula, yes, people did use other substitutes, but they were rarely, if ever, nutritionally sufficient.
Newborns can't eat adult food. They can't really survive on animal milk. If your story takes place in a world before/without formula, a baby separated from its mother is going to either be nursed by someone else, or starve.
It doesn't have to be a huge plot point, but idk at least don't explicitly describe the situation as excluding the possibility of a wetnurse. "The father or the great grandmother or the neighbor man or the older sibling took and raised the baby completely alone in a cave for a year." Nope. That baby is dead I'm sorry. "The baby was kidnapped shortly after birth by a wizard and hidden away in a secret tower" um quick question was the wizard lactating? "The mother refused to see or touch her child after birth so the baby was left to the care of the ailing grandfather" the grandfather who made the necessary arrangements with women in the neighborhood, right? right? OR THAT GREAT OFFENDER "A newborn baby was left on the doorstep and they brought it in and took care of it no issues" What Are You Going to Feed That Baby. Hello?
Like. It's not impossible, but arrangements are going to have to be made. There are some logistics.

reblog not for a “bigger sample size” but because polls like this are a fun way to help people reinforce their own self-concept and passing it along so that other people can also have the opportunity to strengthen their sense of self by pressing a button is a cool and nice thing to do

I had an idea for a one-off Rise episode plot and just wanted to quickly sketch up some visuals for it.
The plot goes as follows: Donnie attempts to invent a cloning machine and, due to some kind of science-y mishap, ends up cloning himself...a lot. But there's a catch to this - the clones aren't exact copies of Donnie, they each possess just ONE of the various facets of his personality (i.e. brainy, broody, sarcastic, passionate, dramatic, mischievous, etc.) and a small portion of his mystic powers. Don tries his darnedest to keep the whole situation under wraps while he searches for a way to fix it, but some of the more rambunctious Donnies quickly escape and begin stirring up trouble in the Lair, so it doesn't stay a secret for very long. To make matters worse - the real Donnie starts to slowly disappear (something having to do with his existence being divided among the Donnies or blahblahblah fake science explanation). So, while he and the scientist Donnies continue to look for a way to reverse the cloning effect, his brothers and Co. set to work gathering up all the other Donnies so they can put them back where they belong and keep Donnie Prime™ from vanishing.
Hilarity, wholesomeness (and some mild angst) ensues.
(Note: I meant to include April in that second-to-last image, but ran out of room. Just know that she, Splinter, and probably Casey Jr. are all there, as well.)

Accessibility can be easier than you think! Please take the time to read this!
I don't think people realize how easy it can be to find an image description in the notes. I'm not gonna lie to you and say it's always super fast and painless, but it can be. Especially on posts with a lot of notes, simple images (like text screenshots), and/or only a few images. It usually takes me less than 10 seconds to scroll through the notes of a post to check if it has an ID.
Just click on notes and sort by comments only. With just a quick scroll through looking for comments that start with things like "[ID:" or "Image Description:", you can check if it has a description or not. You will get better at spotting these quickly over time and it will get easier and faster! Once you've found one, just hit reblog from there. If there are mistakes or something, you can copy paste the ID with any necessary corrections into your own reblog instead with no credit necessary. Credit is not needed for image descriptions, because they are an accessibility measure.
Please check the notes for IDs, even (especially!!) if you don't take the time to write image descriptions normally. It's such a small, fast thing you can do when reblogging something to make your blog more accessible. Please, take the time. It takes less than a minute.
[Plain text: please check the notes for IDs. End PT]

Would anyone be interested in some accessibility reviews of apps? Specifically things like screen reader accessibility and large text support? I feel like these things can often be invisible to people who don’t have access needs themselves, so it can be useful to point out. And of course I may save some fellow disabled people the hassle of downloading an app only to delete it a few minutes later upon realizing that it’s inaccessible.

Idk not to sound like a whingey bitch, but the current watcher situation is reminding me of how people just Expect underprivileged people to take exclusion with grace. This happens with disability as well. Whenever something isn't accessible, people crack down on disabled people who express disappointment or pitch a fit because "oh well, not everything is capable of being accessible, stop ruining our fun!" Similarly, the stupid fucking Watcher streaming service is only For fans who can afford 6 dollars a month. Most of us can't, but we're expected to bow out with grace because... we don't have the privilege to be here anymore??
"Oh, you're all 'artists deserve to be paid for their work' until they actually ask for money!" I cannot give them 6 dollars a month for 4 fucking youtube videos. It's not reflective of myself or my moral standing that I can't fucking afford that. They have been funded through other means so far. It's not like they were getting Nothing just because I wasn't paying out of my own pocket.
It's frustrating because in most cases, including people would be easy. Watcher's content used to be free and funded through various means. Just add characters of color to your line-up. Just add more body types to your pictures. Fucking add image descriptions to your fucking posts already. I'm sick of people punishing marginalized people for not taking "hardship" with a smile when we're fucking excluded all the time for no fucking reason.

hii i hope you don't mind me asking what's the correct way of adding additional info to an id? as in someone else made an image description but i feel there's missing information, what's the proper way to add it? thx!
Hi! Of course I don't mind
So you could message/send an ask to the person that made the original ID and tell them what they missed (make sure to tell them what post you're talking about or link back to it), but what usually happens most is you can reblog the first ID and then, in your reblog, write "[ID Add-on:" and describe the missing details. This option is the one I see/use the most. I guess you could also copy the original ID and edit it to add the missing details
If there are any other ways to do this, I'd appreciate fellow Image Describers to leave them in the notes! And thanks for asking, anon!

Xkit: the best tumblr related add on. with many customizable options, xkit not only enhances your experience from a visual standpoint, but provides some much needed accessibility tools
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media

TF2 Trade Helper: an absolute godsend, lets you add items in bundles, keeps track of your keys and metal and your recent trades, displays links to the backpack tf page next to users profiles and more. look it tells me how much moneys i have and adds metal to trades without clicking one by one oh may god
Tumblr media
IN CONCLUSION: oooooh you want to change to firefox so badly, you want to delete chrome and all the chrome clones that are actually just spyware and use firefox
HOW TO USE MOZILLA ADD-ONS ON YOUR PHONE
if you already use firefox on android, you'll know there are certain add-ons compatible with the app, some of them even being made just for the mobile version such as Video Background Play FIx. while most of them are pretty useful, some more specific ones aren't available on this version of the browser, but there's a way of getting some of them to work
you need to download the firefox nightly app, which is basically the same as the regular firefox browser but with the ability of activating developer mode. you can find how to do that here. once you've enabled it, you need to create a collection with all the add ons you want. i wouldn't recommend adding extensions if the creators haven't talked about phone compatibility, but XKit and Shinigami Eyes should work
also, don't tell the government this secret skater move, but you can try using both the regular firefox browser and nightly so you can have youtube videos in a floating box while you browse social media.
Tumblr media
see? i can block this terf while Rick Rolling the people following this tutorial. isn't that tubular?

Writing Accessibility PSA
Please avoid using long strings of characters as line breaks in your writing - these are not screen reader/TTS friendly!
Every ‘°’ will be read as ‘degree’ - can you imagine how long it takes to read out a string of 25? Let alone more complicated combinations of characters (eg. imagine listening to TTS read out ~*~ |°| ~*~ multiple times per line break)?
A good rule of thumb is to stick with short, 2-3 character line breaks (eg. I don’t find — or *** too egregious to listen to). Your readers can tell there’s been a scene change whether you use two or twenty em-dashes, but if you use twenty, some of us might have to listen for 30 seconds to read the next scene. If you’re more concerned about aesthetics, you can insert an image of your aesthetically pleasing line break with alt text simply reading ‘line break’ for accessibility.
Don’t feel bad if this is something you’ve never thought about before - now you know better and can make your writing more accessible moving forward!
I would like to invite any other screenreader users to add their own thoughts or preferences to this post. We’re not a monolith and there’s a variety to how different softwares interact with repeating character strings and images with alt text, so there’s bound to be some conflicting opinions on what I’ve suggested above. Let’s try to make the stories we share accessible for everyone :]
