Two, handsome, charming sons he sends to the best private school. The twins are bilingual, well-groomed, study piano and violin, are well-exposed to the arts.

But Alfred shows every sign of inheriting his papa's eating disorder and is casting longing looks at the guitar section while he's supposed to be buying violin resin, Mathieu is buying pot in the alley by Arthur's club (or shop or apartment) and sporting bloody knuckles under his school uniform, and Arthur knows a thing or two about festering rebellion.

Or whatever. But the potential for Fail! dad Francis (without tipping into bad dad) and to explore other potential aspects and relationships?!!

Aw hell, I know it’s a huge cliche and pretty historically inaccurate, but I still love the return of the prodigal son dynamic between Alfred and Arthur in WW2.

They were so close during the era of the thirteen colonies. Only for that closeness to be shattered by 1776. If Alfred had called Arthur “dad” before the revolution, he didn’t when it was over. Probably because Arthur snarled that Alfred should “never call him that again!” when they next met after the split. Alfred was devastated and Arthur deeply regretted it, but they were both too proud to admit it.

They have to meet when their politicians do for trade and the like, but the two national personifications still give each other a wide berth. When they’re forced to be together, they barely talk beyond stilted pleasantries. It’s all unbearably tense and strained.

Then WW2 comes. Alfred himself is chomping at the bit to go with Matthew to help the old world, but his bosses don’t want to get involved. Reports are coming in that the situation on the Western Front is getting more hopeless. European countries fall one after another, then Francis is defeated and only Arthur is left. If Alfred was chomping at the bit before, now he’s borderline unbearable to be around. So worried for his brother, Francis (papa?), and, of course, Arthur. Alfred knows how tough his stubborn old man is, but still. This war is like nothing any of them have ever seen.

Then it’s 1941, America officially enters the war, and finally - finally - Alfred can go and help his family. When he gets to Britain, he sees Arthur isn’t looking too good. Still defiant, but injured and worn out by a year of relentless bombing, blitzkrieg, and rationing. Alfred is so happy to see him. He can’t help it: he hugs Arthur tight. Arthur is stunned…then shakily hugs him back. Their first embrace since the revolution. It took a century and a half, but over the course of the war their relationship starts to mend at long last. Before it’s over, Alfred has started calling Arthur “dad” again.

I’m sorry, I’m just so sappy for families reuniting after years of mutual hurt and estrangement aaarrghh don’t look at meeeeee

Both Alfred and Matthew used to have a complex and not completely healthy relationship with the notion that Arthur, in his role of a guardian/parent, made many mistakes and yet he very much cared about them – even more, many of his mistakes came from good intentions.

For Alfred, the two things were not conciliable. Arthur had done him wrong, which meant that Arthur didn't actually care about him in the first place.

Matthew, on the other hand, saw the matter from the opposite side. He knew that Arthur had good intentions – therefore, Matthew felt like he couldn't blame him for anything. Arthur cared, and that was all that mattered – all Matthew could ask of him. Focusing on any mistake or wrongdoing would mean being ungrateful.

While Alfred did eventually get over it and is now able to see his relationship with Arthur in a more mature and nuanced light, Matthew still struggles with this. He can now admit that Arthur did indeed make mistakes, but he still feels like he has no right to feel hurt or resentful about them.

ooohh a bit vague but for a prompt, maybe a sulky pissed-off-with-each-other alfred and matthew? i think alfreds a freak even by nation standards so when he and matthew do get into a viscious fight arthurs probably standing there stressing because he knows better than to try and get between them but hes worried its going to go way too far one day. yea they cant die but they still feel pain right? or at least matthew can.
