Junhee was one of the pretty people. The insanely hot and thus popular kind of guy that made even the perfectly sane lose control of their motor skills. He was hard to get alone and even harder to actually talk to. Just getting him to smile and wave at you was considered a lifetime achievement to most of his admirers. Though you tried to fight, you also fell for his charm and ethereal beauty. You daydreamed about having the courage to ask him out, sparking an impossible whirlwind romance that led to marriage with babies and a dog somewhere on the coast in a cottage. A bit much, yes, but you’d always had an overactive imagination.
This fantasy shattered during your third shift at your new job as a mascot for the new seafood restaurant in your neighborhood. You were handing out flyers for the ongoing special when tragedy struck. With a little less than thirty minutes of your shift left, you spotted Junhee approaching with his friends. You panicked. Dressed up in a giant orange starfish costume and handing out fish ’n chip flyers was not how you wanted your first conversation with him to go.
“Hey. I’ve heard about this place,” a voice spoke above the others. “They say the fried fish and fries are delicious.”
You didn’t want to turn around and face them—him. He’d always see you as the starfish girl and who’d find that attractive? One glance at the owner inside the shop and you caved. You knew the scope of Junhee’s influence. An Instagram update from him would reach hundreds more than you ever could sweating to death on the sidewalk.
Resigned to social seppuku for the greater good, you put on your best customer service smile and turned around. “That’s right! We have the best fish in town! Don’t believe me? Here’s a coupon for ten percent off any combo meal.”
“_____?” Donghun’s mouth gaped as he took in the costume. Junhee’s focus shifted from the flyer to your face. You didn’t know these two were buddies.
“Hiya. Still working at the gas station?” You did your best not to look at Junhee. You’d lose your cool and forget how to talk.
Donghun nodded. “Unfortunately. My shifts suck now that you’re gone.”
“Oh, wait.” Junhee interrupted with wide eyes. “She’s the one you always talk about?” As soon as Donghun nodded, he was sticking his hand out towards you. “I’ve heard so much about you. I’m Junhee.”
Lifetime Achievement awarded.
You took his hand, praying he didn’t notice how yours was clammy and trembled. “I’m ____.”
“The pretty starfish,” he added with a sweet smile.
As your cheeks flushed with color, you bit the inside of your cheek. Maybe being a starfish wasn’t so bad after all.
