“Ace…baby…” you trail kisses down his throat, your arms thrown around his neck and your body flush against his. He rests his hands on your hips, his lips curled into a cocky grin. “I need you.” Another two kisses. “He won’t stop barking. I’ve tried everything.

“Blanket over the kennel?” He says, not even flinching at the harsh yips pouring out of the next room.

“Done.” You mutter against his neck, pulling back a bit and pressing your forehead against his chest.

“Lights on?”

“Done.”

“New toys?”

“Double done.” You meet his eyes again.

“Hmm.” There’s a moment of silence, and his hands slowly move down. “Alrighty. I’ll talk to him.” He nods seriously, popping you on the ass as he steps towards the kitchen, where your very new, very loud puppy resides. You watch his retreating frame, confident, lanky, and oh-so-tall. You curl up on the couch, your only thoughts on Ace and the little routine you’ve formed with him, the yips fading out of your mind. The little family you’ve found with your animals and with each other. You sit up when you realize the barking is actually gone. Your steps are light as you step over to the kitchen, peeking around the corner to see Ace crouched down next to the (far oversized) kennel.

“…so quiet down a little. She’s doing her best. She works hard to make sure you’re taken care of, and all you gotta do is let her get some sleep. You love her, huh? Yeah…me too.”

You lean back against the wall, surprise written across your face. You bite your lip and smile, looking up with a silent thank you to whatever higher power decided that this was going to be your life. That this man was going to be yours.

You hear footsteps and straighten yourself out as he comes around the corner.

“How long have you been standing there?”

“A while.” You say, straightening out the collar of his unbuttoned shirt before pulling him down to meet your lips. His hands fly up to cradle your jawline, and your arms wrap around his neck. You break the kiss, breathing deeply.

“I love you too.”
