It was a throw away comment and Feyre knows it.
“Stop leaving glasses out!” Rhys had said, half laughing, tugging the end of her ponytail and dropping two cups and a mug into the sink.
Rhys makes her a cup of tea every evening, and it’s one of the hundred little ways that Feyre feels spoiled. She does like to keep a glass of water on the night stand, and where Tamlin hated it when she worked, Rhys has always supported her career. So they both leave early in the morning and more often than not, there’s a small collection of glassware in their bedroom.
It's completely fair that Rhys would prefer that she take them to the kitchen in the morning.
So why is it that the comment unsteadies her?
“I’m sorry,” Feyre says, and rushes to the sink. Her hands shake on the sponge. “My brain doesn’t function in the morning, I’ll remember to wash up before bed.” She goes for casual but it comes out breathless, and the Rhys looks over with a frown.
Maybe it’s because she’s been here for four weeks but doesn’t trust this yet.
Not Rhys- he’s been nothing but gorgeous, and patient, and kind. He’s so completely sure about her and in some ways that’s the most wonderful thing about him. And in some ways, it’s a lot of fucking pressure.
Rhys comes to stand behind her and puts his nose on her neck. Closes his fingers over her wrists until she stops moving, and wraps his arms around her waist.
“That’s fair,” he murmurs. “It’s not a real gripe.”
Some nights, Feyre lies awake in the dark, long after Rhys has fallen asleep, and tries to deep-breathe the fear away. It never works. But how can she tell him? It’s not his fault. The problems are all in her head.
“I’m sorry,” Feyre whispers, and she doesn’t mean the glasses.
She knows it’s not realistic, but it’s hard to fight the urge to be as perfect as possible, because she’s never had it so good, and the fact that it could break any day now is more than enough to keep her guts in permanent knots. She’s been holding her lips closed over the anxiety. She’s been trying so hard. She’s brittle enough that the shallow criticism lands like failure in her stomach.
“It’s okay,” Rhys murmurs. He picks up a tea towel and dries her hands, dragging her waist away from the sink. “You’re safe, honey.”
Sometimes Feyre forgets that Rhys does know. Knows better than most- after all, he’s known Tamlin longer than she has. Still, she’s both embarrassed and relieved that he can read her so easily.
“I didn’t mean it,” Rhys says. “Please leave cups in the room. It means you live here and that is so wonderful, to me.”
Rhys sits down on the couch and pulls her into his lap. Feyre hides her face in his chest and wishes, for the thousandth time, that she was better than this. That her fear of Tamlin’s anger would not be an unwelcome third in her and Rhys’s house.
“Hey,” Rhys whispers. “Don’t be sad, beautiful girl.” He slides his hand under her hair, and touches their foreheads together. “You’re okay.”
And then he kisses her, and it helps.
Feyre takes a deep breath, and kisses him back. It’s difficult to be here, it’s difficult to let herself be loved like this. But touching Rhys is always easy, and soon her fingers find his collar and his jaw and the raven curls at the back of his head. And she can feel him smile against her mouth when she tugs him closer.
“Does this help?” he asks. Feyre just nods, and kisses him again. The rough of Rhys’s palms walk up her back, under her shirt, until his hand rests behind her neck.
“I have less anxiety when you’re touching me,” she admits, and Rhys chuckles softly.
“That’s good,” he says, and in the next moment he’s lifted her up out of his lap and laid her back down on the couch cushions. He settles easily between her legs, and every time it’s a thrill to Feyre that he’s hard because of her. His mouth wanders from her lips to her throat to her collar bone and back up.
“I’m not mad,” he says, because that’s always what she’s afraid of and he knows it. “Of course I’m not, you’re such a good girl, how could I be?”
And like clockwork those two words make her brain slide, and her eyes close as his tongue travels the indent that runs from under her sternum to her navel.
“Please,” Feyre breathes. Rhys just looks up at her from under the ink of his eyelashes, and continues kissing down her stomach. “Please,” she says again, and this time he leans up and kisses her heavy on the mouth.
“That’s such a pretty word on your tongue,” he tells her. Feyre doesn’t respond, she’s concentrating on Rhys’s belt buckle and the button beneath it. He glances down, and then gives her a pitying look. “My poor darling,” he says. His teeth graze the corner of her jaw. “You need this, huh?”
Feyre wins her battle with Rhys’s zipper and slides her hand down the front of his jeans. She’s rewarded with a shudder that rips across his shoulders, and it only makes her melt further into the couch.
“Yes,” she whispers.
“You need it?” Rhys asks again. He grinds against her palm and she loves how even when he’s in control, he comes undone a little under her hands. “You need me to fuck it better?”
“Yes,” Feyre says again, and now she shoves his jeans the rest of the way off him, and Rhys pulls his shirt over his head in one motion. He gets his mouth on her throat and his hand on her breast, and Feyre’s limbs reach up and around him to pull him closer than skin. He drags her tights off, agonizingly slow, and then her shirt, and every inch that’s exposed is immediately pressed up against the warmth of him, searing but sweet.
“Tell me how much,” Rhys says, and it’s only the cotton of her underwear that’s between them when he rolls his hips against hers. Feyre closes her eyes, speaks against the slant of his cheek.
“Too much,” she says. He hooks her leg over his shoulder and Feyre’s back arches up off the couch. “And too often. You have no idea…” she trails off, trying to press up against Rhys as he moves all too slowly.
“Too often?” he asks. His fingers drift down, toying with the waistband of her panties.
“All the time,” she gasps. Her hands scrabble on his shoulders as he drags the elastic down over her hips.
“I wish you’d tell me.” He starts to kiss down over her breasts, but Feyre pulls him back up to her lips and slide her tongue against his. He groans softly in her mouth, and she pulls her knees up the sides of his ribcage, digs her heels into base of his back. “I wish you’d lean over, while we’re watching TV, and tell me how bad…” here Rhys pauses to draw a shaky breath because Feyre is wet against his naked cock, “…you need to be fucked.”
“I’m telling you now,” Feyre argues, and lifts her hips to prove her point.
“You are,” Rhys concedes, and presses up against heat of her. “And you’re doing such a good job.” He pushes inside her, and Feyre’s head drops back against the cushions. She breathes in, and it feels like a long time she’s been holding her breath. “Look at me,” Rhys says, and when she opens her eyes he’s watching her face change when he moves out and back in. His hips punch forward when she meets the violet of his gaze, and Feyre gasps.
“That’s it baby,” Rhys murmurs. “Keep looking at me.”
It’s easier said than done- Rhys’s eyes scald her and every time their hips touch her mind slides.
“Come on honey, you can do it.”
Feyre’s eyes snap open, but somehow there’s five hundred years in that stare and it’s a lot to bear. She tips her head back and throws her arm over her face.
And then Rhys’s fingers close over her throat, and it’s strange that this makes her feel safer, that it always makes her feel safer when he’s holding her down because every other moment she’s on the verge of floating away altogether.
“Is that better?” Rhys asks. His eyes darken above her, and she loves knowing that he likes her like this.
“Yes,” she breathes, and his grip tightens.
“You’re so good,” he tells her. “My good girl.”
Feyre can’t help it, she moans at the praise and the sound pushes Rhys’s pace up. This time when her eyes squeeze shut he lets her. Sits up on his heels to get a deeper angle and puts his teeth on her ankle.
“You want to be good for me, don’t you?” Rhys asks. He slides his thumb against her tongue for a second, before touching it to her clit. She can’t answer, because he keeps his rhythm while he talks to her and it’s knocking the breath from her lungs. “You look so pretty like this, baby.” His eyes rake over her, hooded and muddled, and there’s nothing quite so intoxicating as watching him look at her.
Rhys leans his forearms on either side of her face and leans down over her. Feyre’s hands come up automatically to follow the muscles of his back. She thinks he’ll kiss her, but when she tilts her face up he just flicks his eyes down to her mouth and then back up. He slows down now, moves in long, languid strokes that make Feyre feel like she’s drowning.
“You know,” he murmurs. “You can always tell me if you need this.” This time he does kiss her, and the next time he speaks it’s right next to her ear. “I’d drop everything and bend you over. Empty your head just like you like.”
Feyre‘s nails dig into Rhys’s shoulders and he shifts again, moving fast now and breathing shallow.
“Come on baby,” he says, and she can hear the strain in his voice. “Feel good for me.”
She doesn’t need to be told, he always feels good and today is no exception. Not when the snap of his hips makes a steady undertow that she is fast being dragged in by, not when the smell of him this close is enough to drive her to distraction, not when she can feel him start to chase his own release and knows that she’s the one making him feel like this.
“Give it to me,” she whispers. “I want it, want to feel you…”
But Rhys just laughs and shakes his head. “You first, angel.”
Feyre is tempted to see if she can make him lose control, but the way he moves is too good to ignore. And, she’s never one to pass up an opportunity to show him how good she can be.
“Right now,” Rhys says, under her ear, and honestly it’s so easy with him. Feyre breaks in between one breath and the next, and it’s a thing that wrings her out over and over in the cage of Rhys’s arms. It’s somewhere in the aftershocks that Rhys comes too, and she hasn’t told him but this is the part to Feyre that feels so intense she never quite feels like she’ll survive it. But of course she does, and minutes later the world filters back in and the couch cushions are scratchy against her back and there is sweat in Rhys’s hair and her heart is still beating painfully hard in her chest.
And Feyre feels calm, in this moment, which is rare but increasing. She presses her nose against Rhys’s forehead, where he’s half dozing on her chest, and tries to remember the feeling of it, because there will be a next time that she feels anxious and afraid, but if she’s very lucky, and she has been very lucky, there will also be a next time for this part right here, and that makes everything worthwhile.

Ok y'all, I was about to start reading ACOTAR (with a friend, because book clubs are the best thing ever), and I do the logical thing of checking out the map first, and...well...just LOOK at this nonsense:
Tumblr media
WHY ARE THE FAE JUST BRITISH???
AND NOT EVEN IRISH, APPARENTLY, JUST SCOTTISH AND MOSTLY NORTHERN ENGLISH!?!?!?
I haven't seen something this egregious in a fantasy book Map since Assassin's Apprentice, where where map was just Alaska but flipped upside down...
What is even happening here???

Azriel x Gwyn - Shadow Songs
Chapter 20: Loaded Questions
Read on AO3
Fire coursed through her veins, while sweat collected along her brow. Gwyn could feel the heat flow outward as flames shot out of her hand toward the makeshift target she’d set out across the room. It was a small, mostly unfurnished space that Rhysand had granted her permission to use while she remained at the High Pair’s home.
It was the early hours of the morning. Nesta, Cassian, and Azriel had headed off to the Illyrian camp a mere hour ago - right as night began to give way to daylight.
She had been so tempted to ask to go along with them. But something in her told her not to.
So instead she stood in a mostly barren room, that was growing increasingly warm, training alone. Somewhere in the house, Feyre was playing with little Nyx, perhaps Elain was with them too or maybe she’d taken to her garden again. It was a lovely place. Peaceful. Gwyn wasn’t quite in the mood for peace. Her mind was restless and her body followed suit.
And so she formed another inferno and hurdled it across the way. Once again it hit its mark. A small smile formed on her lips. It was a new personal best. She would have to show Azriel the next time they trained together.
At the thought, Gwyn felt a familiar presence at her back. But it wasn’t her Illyrian.
“Is something wrong High Lord?” Gwyn spoke aloud.
His footsteps halted. “No news yet, Gwyn. And you know you can call me by my name in private.”
She did know that. Though sometimes old habits died hard. Gwyn waited until all the fires died out before turning to face Rhysand.
“Then may I ask what brings you here?” she spoke politely.
Rhysand gave her a small smile. “I was actually looking to speak with you on another matter.”
Gwyn waited for him to continue.
“I recall that fire is not your only affinity.”
She nodded. After her heated outburst against Devlon, Azriel had asked her permission to share all of her manifesting powers with Rhysand. They had contacted Lucien immediately about her fire abilities, but little focus had been placed on her water-wielding potential.
“You’ve done well learning to control your fire abilities. I’m assuming Lucien was invaluable in that regard.”
Gwyn nodded. “Of course, he has been extremely helpful.” Not to mention Gwyn adored her fiery friend. His humor, his quiet kindness. Her friend had told her that once upon a time he’d been far less jaded, but years spent at court - both Autumn and Spring - had taught him lessons he confessed he wouldn’t soon forget. Gwyn hoped one day he would learn to fully open his heart to others once more, but for now, she was glad to be one of the blessed few who could claim to truly know him at all.
“Good,” Rhys said. “Then I think it just as important we give you time with a teacher that might provide you with some instruction over your water abilities as well.”
Excitement thrummed through her veins at the mention. Gwyn loved to learn. She often consumed knowledge as if it alone was enough to sustain her. But one thought stuck in her head as she considered his proposal.
“The water nymphs reside almost exclusively in the Spring Court as far as I am aware,” she said. “And last I checked there is no love lost between you and the High Lord of Spring.”
Rhys smirked. “You’re correct on both accounts.”
“So what are you proposing?”
“That if you are serious about getting a better grasp over your water magic abilities and how far they extend, I may know someone else who might be willing to help you.”
Gwyn’s brow furrowed, trying to think of who the High Lord was eluding to.
“It might also be a positive diplomatic move as well.”
Gwyn tilted her head, curiosity growing with each pointedly vague comment.
“Azriel might not like my plan though.”
She eyed the High Lord. “Why?”
But before Rhysand could answer, Gwyn saw a look pass over his face. Someone was speaking to him and based on the downturn of his lips it was not good news.
“Rhysand?” she asked when it looked as though he planned to winnow away.
He met her gaze for a moment. “It appears I am needed at the camps after all.”
Gwyn held her breath, a sort of knowing passing over her. Whatever issue had arisen it was undoubtedly bad if they required Rhysand’s presence.
“Let us speak more of this when I return,” he said.
Just like that, he was gone, and she was once again alone.
-
The other male sat stiffly in front of them. Rhysand had tried to convince him to wait until late morning or early afternoon to visit the Illyrian camp so that he had more time to better access the situation. Azriel had refused.
His brother had eventually conceded when both Nesta and Cassian backed him up and insisted on going with him to visit the camp at first light. The three of them now stood side by side, staring down Tobias who appeared to grow more anxious with each passing moment.
“Is there a reason why I’m here or are you three just going to stare me down until we are all old and gray?” the male remarked.
Azriel stood silent with his arms crossed, while Nesta took a step forward. She had insisted on speaking to the male in question first.
“Where were you really the night Azriel was attacked Tobias?” she asked coldly.
Tobias’ brow furrowed. “I was here as I said previously. Why are you bringing that incident up again?”
“We’ve come into new information. So why don’t you walk us through that night again,” Cassian said.
“I was with Zander. A few of us gathered around a fire to have drinks after training. But Zander and I both started to feel unwell so we sought out the camp healer.”
Azriel narrowed his eyes. Once more he detected ill from Tobias, and yet something in his gut told him this wasn’t the whole truth. A knock came on the door before Azriel could voice his doubts.
Cassian went and answered it. Azriel glanced over his shoulder, spying Zander standing in the doorway. Perfect timing. They had called the other male to meet them as well.
“General, Spymaster, what brings you both here?” Zander asked, nodding in brief acknowledgment to Nesta. Nesta did not return the gesture, instead maintaining her facade of indifference.
“We once more have reason to believe there is a traitor in our midst,” Cassian replied.
Zander’s expression grew serious. “Didn’t we already go through this? You interrogated all of us previously and found nothing. What has changed since then?”
On silent feet, Azriel moved toward the other male. “What has changed is that a Seer confirmed to seeing an Illyrian male fighting against us in a future battle.”
Zander's eyes met his own. It appeared as though the younger male was trying to figure out what it was none of them were saying. A brief moment passed before he seemed to get it. His eyes darted toward his friend.
“You think it is Tobias.”
It wasn’t worded as a question.
“What?” the other male shouted. “I told you I was at the fire pit before going to the healer. Wasn’t I Zander?
A strange look passed over Zander’s face and he did not answer at first.
“Zander?” Tobias prompted.
Zander inhaled sharply. “You were there, but…”
“But what?” Nesta questioned.
Zander swallowed nervously. “After we left the healer I headed back to the fire pit because I’d somehow dropped one of my hunting knives, but Tobias still wasn’t feeling all too well so he decided to head back first.”
“And that’s exactly what I did, Zander. Why do you make it sound like I did something wrong?” Tobias said.
Azriel watched as Zander regarded his friend with a hint of concern. “Because when I passed your place on the way back to mine I decided to drop by and make sure you got back alright. When I went to check on you, you weren’t home.”
The room fell silent.
Tobias stiffened. “What?”
“I went to your cabin and you weren’t there,” Zander repeated.
Azriel saw red, but he let none of his growing anger show. “And you didn’t think to mention this the last time we were here?” His question aimed at Zander.
Zander stared at him. Azriel expected fear, but Zander simply looked resolute.
“I did not think too much of it. I figured Tobias merely changed his mind and went for a walk or something. It’s not like I searched the camp for him or anything.”
“Then why say anything now?” Cassian jumped in, catching Zander’s attention.
“Because, in truth, I wasn’t quite ready to believe you before. But now you’re saying a Seer has confirmed that one of our own looks to stand against us,” he said. “I do not want to believe Tobias is guilty, and I still don’t. However, considering a traitor could be a threat to us all I cannot in good conscience withhold any information.”
So now he had a conscience. Azriel almost scoffed. What a change in tune now that the threat applied to Illyria.
Azriel’s gaze swung toward Tobias, who looked both shocked and betrayed.
“How…how could not tell me you suspected me of such a thing?” Tobias spoke quietly.
Zander met his friend's gaze. “I just said that I didn’t, but I truly do not know where you went that night and you’ve never brought it up since. Where did you go?”
Tobias' expression hardened. “I told you I headed back to my cabin.”
“Do you remember lying down to sleep? Or were you too drunk?” Nesta suddenly asked.
Both of the males turned their attention toward her.
“I wasn’t drunk,” Tobias insisted. “And in terms of going to bed I…I...”
His voice fell as he clutched his head. “I don’t…I don’t remember anything after I split up from Zander,” he confessed.
The truth of his admission settled over the room. For a brief moment, no one spoke a word.
Azriel took a calming breath.
“I don’t think he’s lying,” Nesta said.
No. Azriel did not think so either, which opened a host of other concerning possibilities.
Rhys. Azriel reached out.
Did you discover something? Rhys asked.
On the evening of the break-in at the House of Wind, there is a period of time where Tobias’ whereabouts are unaccounted for. No one knows where he was, and he claims not to remember.
Do you believe him?
Yes.
For a moment the bond went quiet, but soon after Rhys answered. I’ll be there right there.

It's been a while, dear friends. I think that at this point my once every-three months pattern for updating might in fact hold up. I thought I'd have more time to work on this now that I'm mostly querying my completed original work, but instead I find that working on other original works. So while I will continue to update this, it'll, unfortunately, continue to be slow. Thank you to those who continue to follow, and know that I appreciate any and all of your comments and support.
Best, Cin

Just FYI:
I'm going to take a break from ACOTAR and Fae before diving into A Court of Silver Flames. Plus, I'm waiting for the audiobook to be available at the library. I'll still be reblogging fan art up until that book (and don't worry--my Lucien posts aren't going anywhere). 🦊
I'm going to be reading another book or two during that time, but I will tag anything with the title just in case you want to avoid spoilers.

Started reading A Court of Thorns and Roses last night. Two of my friends and I decided we'd do a sort of book club on it. I've been curious about it for awhile. I know 20-something me would have gobbled these up. I was big into fanfic at the time. And yes, I'm mentioning fanfic because they remind me of a lot of things I read in fanfics.
I'm four chapters in. A few things that have popped out at me so far.
1. The beginning is good. You get a good sense of Feyre's current circumstances.
2. Her family relationships make no sense. Feyre should have been the eldest sister.
3. There's a 3 year age difference between Nesta and Feyre with Elaine in the middle. Ouch. No wonder their mother was cold. Damn.
4. They should have become poor earlier for me to buy Feyre doesn't have reading skills. But whatever.
To deal with these things, I've decided to let my brain fill in the blanks to explain it away. Feyre is our only perspective, she can't read minds, and is a flawed person herself, so I'm just gonna say she's misread this whole family situation cause of her own baggage and her self sacrificing self is too stubborn to listen even if it her sisters tried to explain their perspectives.
I am allowed to change my mind as more information comes forward.

a/n: There's not very much known about the witches in the ACOTAR universe so I'm just taking creative control here (: If you're interested in reading more of Az x witch reader, you can find the masterlist here.
**
As Azriel sits in your living room, the familiar weight of concern settles in his chest. The past few days have felt like a quiet storm and the bond between you, has fallen eerily silent far too many times to go unnoticed.
Of course, he’s already asked if you were alright but he sensed the lie as it brewed in your eyes before it slipped out of your lips. The shadows that remain at your side keep him updated on your whereabouts but besides a crow following you one day, there’s nothing else to report. He wonders if you’re upset with him.
Azriel tries to engross himself into the book–as it’s one you recommended to him– in his hand but his eyes keep drifting from the pages. He steals glances toward the closed door of your study. A vibrant green glow, your magic, spills from the edges of the door. He tries to pull on the bond but cannot find you on the other end. You shut him out. Again.
Three knocks pull him out of his thoughts. Ignoring the skittering dance of his shadows and the way Pearl–your pet spider–retreats back to her corner, he opens the door. There’s no one on the other side. A perplexed furrow forms on his brow as he peeks into the hallway, dispatching his shadows to investigate further. They return with no insights, leaving an unsettling silence in their wake.
“Hey Az?”
Azriel closes the door and locks it. He turns to see you stepping out from your study. You smile at him sheepishly, toying with your glowing hands. “Can I have some of your blood?” Your voice is surprisingly calm, despite the look in your eyes, and you must mistake his silence as apprehension because you’re adding: “Just a drop!”
He would’ve gladly granted your request but before he can even utter a word, a sudden shift in the air catches your attention. Your eyes widen, a touch of panic flickering within them. It’s a fleeting moment where control slips from your grasp, and in that heartbeat, your side of the bond bursts open.
His wings quiver as if struck by an invisible force. A torrent of emotions crashes over him like unrelenting waves on a storm sea, flooding and overwhelming his senses. Worry etches lines on his face at the raw intensity of your feelings.
“Toad’s blood!”
In the blink of an eye, he’s standing in front of you, his hands cradling your face. The hazel depths of his eyes burn with concern but you avoid his gaze, your frantic eyes darting around the room as if looking for something–someone.
“y/n, my love,” Azriel implores softly, his heart pounding in his chest as he desperately tries to navigate through the sea of your emotions. “What’s wrong?”
Your eyes land on the door and a palpable tension fills the air. “You opened the door.”
Azriel’s eyebrows knit together in confusion. “Someone knocked.”
You swallow thickly. “How many?”
“What?”
Your voice is firmer this time. “How many knocks?”
“Three.”
You’re pulling out of his grasp abruptly. You run back to your study and a trail of perplexed worry etches further across Azriel’s face as he follows after you. With a furrowed brow, he observes your hurried actions. Windows are slammed and shut and locked in quick succession. He blinks and you’re running to your room next. “y/n, please talk to me! Tell me what’s wrong!”
You pause, if only for a brief moment, your eyes finally meeting his. “You just opened the door to a gateway of evil.”
“Evil??” Azriel’s wings flinch, the word carrying an unexpected weight. “What evil?”
“My mother.”
A sense of impending danger guides your every move and you’re sprinting past him. Over your shoulder, you urgently command, “Quick! Lock all the windows!”
Azriel responds without hesitation. He races back to your living room, determined to secure the window he opened earlier. As he does so, he sees a crow flying toward him. It’s familiar to both him and his shadows. The dark tendrils hasten to close the window beside him and the crow, unable to halt its trajectory, collides with the glass.
“I think that's all of it,” you say with a sigh of relief. However, it’s short lived as an overlooked detail dawns on you. The window in your kitchen.
Azriel, his shadows and you are already racing toward the kitchen but despite your efforts, you’re too slow to close it. Your sock clad feet glide across the floor and Azriel wraps an arm around your waist from behind, preventing you from falling. It tightens around you, drawing you snugly against him in a protective embrace, just as the crow flutters its wings menacingly and tauntingly above you. His eyes narrow at the bird and his shadows poise like a snake ready to strike.
Shrouded in a swirling cloud of purple smoke, the crow undergoes a mystical transformation. Its plumage shifts and twists, feathers unraveling and converging as if guided by an unseen hand. A silhouette begins to take form amid the enchanting mist and as the last tendrils of purple dissipate, a beautiful older female stands before you.
“That is not the way to welcome your mother, Dearest.”
**
The last time you saw your mother was when Hybern became allies with Spring. She had asked you to join her coven, out of worry for you if you stayed in the court that was crumbling apart, but Feyre had already secured plans to bring you to Velaris. The City of Starlight was a safe haven for you…until the Hybern attack unveiled its secret. She’s been reaching out ever since–sending countless letters and when those did not work, she started sending ravens.
Though she delves in dark magic, you know your mother means well. She loves you and has been protective of you. Overly protective. Perhaps, you were being dramatic about it all but you weren’t ready for her to meet Azriel yet. You didn’t even get to finish the protective spell you were planning on casting upon him. All you needed was a drop of his blood to complete it…
“Mother,” you reluctantly greet.
She smirks at you. Every muscle of your body tenses and you place your hand over Azriel’s to let him know it's okay. Ever the perceptive one, your mother catches the subtle gesture. Her gaze falls upon the protective presence behind you. She narrows her eyes and points a perfectly manicured finger at him as if to say “I’ll deal with you later.”
With a wave of her other hand, a cage materializes out of thin air. You can barely make out the tiny green creature in it before your mother is thrusting it into your hands.
“Hold your father, will you? I need to go fetch your sisters.”
She says it so casually, it’s comical almost. You grimace as your gaze flickers to the small lizard. It nervously scurries within the small cage it is confined in and you’re tempted to drop it.
Your father, a former high noble fae from Spring, had been cursed into a feeble gecko at the powerful hands of your mother. She did it shortly after she caught him trying to take your life at the mere age of two. He had plans to kill your mother next and take her heart for his own so now your mother loves to torment him by carrying him with her so that each remaining day of his life is as miserable as can be.
Verena, your mother, walks over to your door as if she owns the place. With an air of confident authority, she swings it open, revealing two females on the other side—your sisters, each birthed from a different father. One, with dark, flowing hair and sinister eyes, wears a smirk that mirrors Verena’s. Maeve. The other, with lighter hair, possesses kinder eyes, and delicate white feathery wings. Thea. She looks at you apologetically.
You’re slipping out of Azriel’s grasps and joining your family in your living room. The cage falls from your grasp, rolling onto the ground. Binx dives out from the shadows, eyes alight as the cat spots the green creature within. A curious paw swats at it, its claws peeking through the thin gaps at the top of the cage but no one bats an eyelash at the terrified squeak.
A scowl settles onto your face. “Mother, Maeve, Thea. As quickly as you arrived, I want you all to leave,” you say, clapping your hands at them for emphasis. “I did not invite you here.”
“No,” your mother agrees with a nod but her eyes are fixed on something–rather someone behind you. “He did.”
**
Four pairs of eyes are on him and Azriel only cares about one. Yours. His knowledge over your family is limited. He knew your father was a piece of scum but he did not know he still lived. There’s a tightening in his chest and he knows it's coming from your side of the bond. He sends a wave of reassurance through it because if you’re okay, he’s okay. Even if your family is a little overwhelming.
Verena circles around him, her gaze sharp as the crow she morphs into. Azriel stands still, his shadows swirling defensively. When Verena extends toward the talon of his wings, the shadows snap at her, causing her to withdraw. A wicked grin appears on her face.  “A Shadowsinger,” she observes. “What is your name?”
“Azriel.”
Verena hums, stepping back, her eyes scanning every inch of him. There’s a devilish gleam in them when they settle upon his large, membranous wings. He instinctively tucks them back.
“By The Mother, you look absolutely ravishing,” purrs your dark-haired sister.
The lighter haired sister beside her smiles. “He is quite beautiful.”
“Maeve,” the darker haired sister introduces herself. Her dark brown eyes sparkle in amusement. She holds her hand out to him. “We haven’t yet had the pleasure. y/n has been hiding you for far too long.”
Azriel does not take her hand. Instead, he watches her with wary eyes and she laughs. As her eyes deepen in hue, mirroring the unsettling darkness akin to yours, an ominous glow envelops her hands. It resembles a delicate yet foreboding cloud of gray smoke that dances around her fingers.
**
“Don’t touch him,” you growl, raising your own hand. A raging green fire roars from your fingertips as the darkness takes your eyes.
Maeve turns to hiss at you. Her cloud of smoke is steadfast as it continues its path to Azriel. Your mate. You hiss back but your mother rests a hand on your shoulders and out of the corner of your eye, you swear Thea sends a reassuring gesture your way.
“Oh, come on.” Maeve persists, her voice, both enchanting and seductive, beckons like a magnetic force. She steps closer to him, ignoring the heated glare you send her way.  She places a hand on his arm and you're shaking with rage as you recognize the haze that clouds Azriel's eyes.
“You look hungry. Would you like a taste? What do you think, Shadowsinger?”
Smoke wraps around him, infiltrating his senses and charging the air around him with an alluring energy.  It smells like chamomile and lavender–a scent intricately tied to you, the enchanting witch he calls his own. You’re shoving away from your mother and prancing on your sister, the two of you tumbling to the ground. “Let him go!”
The room becomes a radiant spectacle, bathed in the ethereal clash of gray and green magic. The air is charged with the tension of their coexistence and you’re pinning your sister to the floor beneath you. “Why do you always have the thirst to take everything I have?”
“Because it’s fun,” Maeve hisses at you, her dark eyes a reflection of yours. “Besides, our family is in need of a new pet, don’t you think?”
“Girls, stop it this instant!”
“Can it be something cute this time? Like a puppy!”
“Thea, shut up!” You say brusquely as you look up.
Thea winces at your tone. Maeve takes the sliver of your distraction to push you off of her. The two of you hastily get to your feet and you hold your hands out ready to unleash the vibrant, verdant rage coursing through your veins at her.
“I think y/n is ravishing this evening. Don’t you?”
Azriel’s voice is light, dreamy almost as he’s in a trance. He blinks and the tendrils of magic briefly cloud his vision before it clears. He steps away from Maeve’s cloud of smoke, repulsed by her magic and his eyes are searching for you.
His gaze, steady and filled with a profound warmth, captures yours and it feels like a gentle cascade of water extinguishing a flame. The vibrant green fire in your hands gracefully fades away, mirroring the softening of your eyes in the tender exchange.
“And he’s not even lying,” Maeve frowns with a huff, her voice and eyes returning to normal. Disappointment is written all over her face. No one has been able to escape from her power of seduction before. “How dull.”
Your hand finds solace in Azriel’s and he locks his fingers with yours. You smile at him and he smiles back. You are the only enchantment he desires and your heart swells. You're so happy you could kiss him--
Thea, always one step ahead of everyone, gasps. “He’s your mate.”
Your mother’s eyes undergo a shadowed transformation of her own, reminiscent of a crow’s ominous gaze. Azriel feels a subtle unease but you remain composed. Gracefully, she approaches, her movements mirroring the fluid elegance of a bird. With a discerning sniff, she assesses the air around you both. Her keen eyes flicker to Azriel’s chest–where the emerald, the greatest token of your affection, securely rests beneath his leathers. His siphons awaken in response, pulsing with a powerful and protective luminescence.
“Your heart. Your precious, precious heart,” she whispers, her voice on the brink of tears.
There’s a drastic shift in her voice when she speaks again. It darkens with a mother’s fierce intensity and echoes through the room like a hissing serpent. “You’ve given it to him.”
Your mother outstretches her hand, toward Azriel, her gesture laden with an unmistakable agony. With a resolute urgency, you press your hand against Azriel’s chest, your other hand still wrapped around his. You can feel the pulse of his heart beneath the gem. It’s fast and erratic but gradually soothes under your touch.
Given your family's history, you can't blame your mother for reacting this way. Maeve's father was a charming merchant, who enjoyed traveling through the sea, and was very aware of his heartthrob status. Your mother was not immune to his allure and though she did not love him, she was possessive over him. So when she caught him touching another female, she cut his hand off, forcing him to always think of her for the rest of his life. She keeps the hand she severed preserved in a jar at her house.
On the other hand, Thea's father was a peregryn warrior who loved studying the stars in his free time. He was probably the best male out of all three...if he hadn't picked his loyalty for his court over your mother. Surprisingly, your mother left him alone and unharmed but she made a good example of him to you all because even the kindest of men were not to be trusted.
But Azriel is different.
His sweetness, care and love create a warmth that gently embraces your heart. You’ve spent a lifetime shielding your heart as your mother taught you but with Azriel, it feels different. He is your mate. Your other half, crafted by The Mother and Cauldron itself. In his presence, you find a haven where vulnerability is not a weakness but a welcomed connection.
“I love him.”
Wheeling with a snarl, she fixes her sharp gaze back onto you. Her hand tenses midair and her talons peak out before dropping it back to her side. She leans so close you can feel her breath tickle yours.  Her gaze travels down to the obsidian necklace you keep on at all times for protection and she feels her throat tighten when she sees the new charm attached to it. It’s an initial. A for Azriel.
“You stupid, foolish girl. What have you done? Have I taught you nothing?”
Azriel growls and his shadows tense as they await their master’s next order. Your hand tightens against him and you send a wave of reassurance through the bond. This was exactly what you had been hoping to avoid. The last male you introduced to your mother was turned into a frog and you hadn’t put up a fight as the male had fallen under Maeve’s spell. But this time, you were willing to fight and defend what was yours.
“I think it's quite brave,” a dreamy voice cuts in through the tension. “A true testament to love.”
“Shut up, Thea.” Maeve snaps. “No one asked for your opinion.”
“I’ll keep that in mind next time you ask for a reading!”
“Azriel.” Your mother’s voice is sharp, demanding attention. “You hold something extremely dear to me now. If I find you to be careless with it–if you so much as hurt y/n in any shape or form…I will hunt you down, rip your heart out and eat it for breakfast.”
“She’s not joking,” Maeve decides to chime in. “She ate Thea’s lover for dinner once.”
“Must you always jump at the opportunity to remind me?” Thea retorts with a look of pained disgust on her face and you almost feel bad for her. She did love that male terribly, as undeserving as he was.
“I don’t know why it’s such a big deal, my dearest,” your mother says in a perplexed tone. She rolls her eyes at the scoff she received in response. “He was a human.”
“He was the love of my life!”
“And others too.” Maeve cuts in, lips curled into a lopsided smirk as she gazes at her nails. “Mother did you a favor there.”
“This,” you say to Azriel, lifting your chin toward your family. Your mother and sisters continue to bicker back and forth while Binx zooms after the rolling cage imprisoning your father. You sigh deeply and Azriel now understands why you were on edge all week, why you had shut him out.
 “This is my family.”
As if on cue, your family turns to him. Binx rests a paw on the rolling cage, halting its movement. Even the green gecko inside seems to peer curiously at the Shadowsinger, its tiny eyes glinting in the dim light.
Your mother, a formidable figure with an air of ancient wisdom, focuses her attention to Azriel. The expression on her face is a complex blend of skepticism and concern. Her dark eyes narrow as if probing his very soul–a look that has sent many to mad chaos and the room seems to hold its breath as Azriel meets her gaze.
You step in between them both. “Mother, must you always do this?”
“It’s okay. I have nothing to hide,” Azriel reassures you as he holds your mother’s gaze, unwavering and resolute. “I would never dream of hurting y/n. I love her.”
“He speaks the truth, mother. He’d kill for her, I’ve seen–ow!”
Your mother’s keen eyes linger on him. Despite Thea’s words, she wants to see for herself. The room feels suspended in time as she carries on with probing into his very soul. She’s peering into the depths of his heart, seeping into its cracks and searching for any hint of insincerity. The tension in the room starts to dissipate as she must sense something she agrees with. Slowly, her lips gradually curve in a smile–a genuine one.
“I like this one,” your mother says as she turns to you. “I shall spare you the part of my visit where I ask you to come back home with me as I now know it will be pointless. So let’s have dinner, hmm? All this excitement has me famished.”
Your mother clasps her hands together, springing the room into action. Binx resumes messing around with your father and Maeve makes her way to your kitchen, your mother following after her.
“I did not agree to you staying for dinner!” You call after them, shooting Azriel an apologetic look.
“She was going to agree anyway.”
Azriel turns to your sister–the closest to a normal relative you seem to have. Her blue eyes, flecked with silver hold a spark of otherworldly wisdom as she regards him.
“You can see the future?”
She tilts her head, a cascade of blonde curls falling over her shoulder. Her lips curl into a knowing smile and her peregryn wings flutter. “Only what the stars tell me,” she replies cryptically. “Would you like me to read your cards?”
Azriel contemplates for a moment. He turns toward the kitchen and his eyes find you. You’re engaged in a lively debate about the perfect amount of herbs, claiming that only a pinch of thyme is needed while Maeve stubbornly shakes her head.
“Out of my kitchen! Go seduce a pig for all I care before I hex you with an angry nest of bees!”
His love for you deepens with every passing second and he nearly startles when he feels a flutter in his chest. It’s you. You echo the sentiment very loud and clear through your end of the bond.
“No.”
“Why not?” She teases, though she already knows the answer.
“Because right now, I have everything I could ever want.”
**
Once your family departs, relief washes over you, and you finally feel able to breathe freely. Leaning against the door, you release a sigh, allowing your eyes to flutter shut momentarily. When you reopen them, your gaze lands on Azriel in the living room. He's seated, head tilted back, eyes closed, weariness evident. Moving towards him, you saunter over, and without a word, he instinctively pulls you onto his lap, his eyes still shut in a shared moment of exhaustion and solace.
Your hands tenderly cradle his face, bathed in the soft glow of your green magic. You massage his temples, your fingertips tracing away the remnants of the headache your mother’s earlier probing had left behind. A contented sigh escapes him at your soothing touch.
“Thank you,” he breathes and his hands find their place at your hips.
You press a gentle kiss to his forehead. “I should be the one thanking you.”
He opens his eyes and there’s a subtle perplexity among them. “How come?”
“Because they’re chaotic,” you answer and tipping your chin down sheepishly, you continue, “I’m sorry for shutting you out. I was doing my best to keep them from coming but I should’ve just told you instead. I was trying to protect you from all of this–”
A scarred finger props your chin up, urging you to look back up at him. The hand that remains at your hip tightens with a comforting reassurance. You find yourself lost in the depths of his beautiful hazel eyes and like always, they anchor you like a tranquil forest bathed in sunlight.
“You don’t have to protect me from this. I accept it–all of you. I love you,” he murmurs. The corner of his lips tug up into a small smile. “Though I do find you unbearingly adorable when you’re protective.”
“Adorable?” You can’t help but laugh. Others would beg to differ. You're sure your eyes have given Cassian nightmares.
“Especially when it’s all for me,” he nearly purrs, pressing kisses to the corner of your eyes. The very eyes he adores, even when they transform into inky pools of black.
He kisses the nape of your neck and your breath hitches. “Did you mean it?”
Azriel hums against your neck. “Mean what?”
“What you said to Thea earlier,” you say, mindlessly confessing that you had been listening to his short conversation with your sister.
You feel him smile against you. “Of course I did. Whatever the future may bring, as long as I have you, that's enough for me. You’re my everything.”
When he pulls away to look at you, you’re beaming at him. His nose brushes against yours and your hands cup his face again, eyes flickering to his lips before you guide them to yours in a slow yet passionate kiss. You slide your tongue along the softness of his bottom lip, reveling in his honeyed taste and he parts his mouth for you, a small sound of pleasure slipping between your lips.
You kiss him and kiss him until the future seems like a distant thought, overshadowed by the perfection of the present.
**
a/n: I was driving to an appointment when I randomly thought of how chaotic reader's family is and wanted to introduce them formally in case I want to incorporate them in future imagines. This takes place shortly before the one where you get kidnapped.
Also, I'm currently watching the Witcher and I couldn't help myself and use this scene to help me write the part where Maeve tries to seduce Az.

So being sick with covid and being on my period at the same time is not fun so I was wondering if you haven't already done it a sick reader head cannon? With whatever Sarah J. Mass male you want or all of them whatever you want.
ah I'm so sorry you're sick love! covid definitely seems to be making the rounds right now, stay safe and I hope you feel better soon💜
SJM Males When You're Sick Headcanons
ACOTAR
Azriel
⁃ Azriel knows you’re sick before you do
⁃ His shadows wake him up in the night when they hear your sniffled breathing, notice your fever
⁃ He’s up and getting you water and a cool rag, making some tea with medicine from Madja as soon as you are up
⁃ If he has to go anywhere, he leaves his shadows with you to keep him updated on how you’re doing or if you need anything
⁃ He gets you your favorite flowers and a book, which he reads to you as you take a warm bath, the water helping with any congestion
⁃ Picks out your favorite clothes for you to sleep in, keeping an eye on you while being careful not to pester you too much
Rhys
⁃ Rhys secretly loves the excuse to take care of you
⁃ You usually tease him for using magic to do the smallest things, so he takes every opportunity to make anything you could need appear in an instant. You want warm soup? Right there. Another blanket? Five blankets of various fabrics appear without hardly a thought.
⁃ You are not leaving the bed. Rhys pushes any meetings or responsibilities he has to stay with you, taking the opportunity as the perfect excuse to spend quality time with you, absolutely spoiling you in every way
Cassian
⁃ Cassian gets anxious, immediately going to Madja for any possible medicine you could need
⁃ He would ask for step by step instructions on how to best care for you while you’re sick, and stick to that routine
⁃ He makes sure to make you food with lots of nutrients to boost your immune system
⁃ Azriel and Feyre both tell him to calm down and that you just need to rest, so Cassian carries you everywhere. He is undressing you, lifting you into the bathtub, washing your hair…
⁃ And then he discovers how much he likes carrying you everywhere, cradling you to his chest bridal style. It becomes a tough habit for him to break once you’re feeling better
Lucien
⁃ listens to you and what you need
⁃ He’ll do lots of small things, like bringing you a sweet treat or small gift to cheer you up
⁃ Knowing you feel terrible, he consistently tells you how beautiful you look and how lucky he is to be your mate, despite your laughter and protests
⁃ Plans a special night for the two of you once you’re better doing something he knows you love
Eris
⁃ this sweet baby is on high alert the moment he notices something is wrong
⁃ Once you’ve assured him that no one hurt you, you just aren’t feeling well, he checks you over thoroughly
⁃ He will make sure that you are tended to for everything you could need, assigning various people to give you medicine, cook you whatever meals you like, etc
⁃ But he’ll complain that they’re not doing a sufficient job and take over, halting his duties to take care of you
Throne of Glass
Rowan
⁃ Teases you for getting sick, saying you’re being irresponsible and not taking care of yourself
⁃ But he’ll insist on caring for you, making no sure you get plenty of rest and that no one bothers you with responsibilities
⁃ He’s the perfect one to hold you when you’re sick, his warm body soothing against yours as he wills a gentle, cool wind against your face
Crescent City
Hunt
⁃ he’d hear your small cough when he came in the house and immediately crumble
⁃ He’d rush over to you, asking what hurts and if he can get you anything to drink or eat, ordering your favorite food to be delivered
⁃ He’d pick you up in his lap, bundling you in blankets as he held you close until you fall asleep
⁃ He’d let you watch whatever show you wanted, even if the sunball game was on (but once you’re asleep, sunball is back on the TV)
⁃ Forehead kisses. Constantly. Carrying you into the shower, softly washing your body while he kisses all over your head and shoulders, wherever he can show physical affection
Ruhn
⁃ This cute dumbass would tease you at first, probably ask if you’re hungover
⁃ Once he realizes you’re sick, he’d go all out. Messaging Flynn and Dec to gather food and medicine for you while he sets you up in your shared room with blankets, pillows, TV, etc
⁃ He lays in bed with you, absentmindedly playing with your hair, watching tv, just to be there if you need anything and so you don’t feel alone
⁃ He’s definitely searching on his phone “will I catch my girlfriend’s sickness if I go down on her?”

Azriel x Gwyn - Shadow Songs
Chapter 19: Remember the Sight
Read on AO3
Synopsis:
Gwyn Berdara was content to live her life in peace at the Temple in which she'd grown up, her sister by her side. But the war with Hybern saw her sister killed and her entire life uprooted. Years later, she's come to terms with everything she's lost and has even found a semblance of happiness with her chosen sisters. However, the stars are not done playing games with her yet and with the threat of war once again looming on the horizon she will soon learn just what she's made of and who she is made for.
Azriel has centuries worth of scars, on both his body and soul. He's lived through numerous wars, witnessed countless atrocities and committed his fair share of sins. Justice for Nesta recs (AO3)
Most, if not all, of these recs are in the Justice for Nesta/ ACOSF rewrite/fix-it vein. It will be updates as I find more fics, but feel free to send any recs you have.
TRIGGER WARNING! Many of these fics will be very dark, with references to suicide, ptsd, misogyny, and IC BS. However, I'll be sure to add specifics where applicable.
Fics For Those Craving Nesta JusticeI put all the fics I found into one collection on AO3 that, as the title suggests, are for those craving Nesta Justice. Please read the relevant tags for each fic, as many of them contain reference to PTSD, SA (both past referenced and in story), and general IC BS.
I'll also list every fic in this collection bellow, just to keep them all in one place. Feel free to also add your own finds or works if you have any. The collection is open, but moderated.
